Product Description

"Rio for Partiers" is a travel guide to Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) designed for red blooded tourists. It outlines, in a step-by-step manner, all the must-see tours of Rio: relaxing tours (exactly where to go to unwind), adventure sports (who to contact for instructions), cultural (the essential tours) and rainy day ideas (what to do in Rio when it's raining). It also goes into detail on what every tourist must try: from snacks to tropical fruit juices, to Brazilian cuisine to local drinks. Thirdly, it lays out the nightlife scene, giving each day of the week the best option for: clubbing, live music, street parties or bars. Lastly, it offers dozens of tips on topics like safety, prices and how to deal with Brazilian boys and girls. But what makes Rio for Partiers even more desirable is that it can save the tourist lots of money: the publishers have partnered with sports instructors, bars and restaurants to get them to offer a discount or bonus to bearers of our book: just show the cupons in the back and you are automatically entitled to free drinks, discounts to daily rates and VIP entrance (no waiting in line) at the best bars and clubs. In short, Rio for Partiers tells you everything you need to know to have a blast in Rio.

5 out of 5 stars Best Travel Guide!.......2007-06-06

I went to Rio last year with a friend. She brought two travel guides, and I brought two travel guides. We quickly ditched all the other travel guides, but carried Rio for Partiers around every day we were in Rio.

This book tells you about things only locals know and other travel guides don't teach you. It explains (with pictures) food you will find on the beach and in the street cafes, complete with an estimated cost. The book also explains hand signals commonly used in Rio (very helpful), includes popular phrases, a map, tells you what to pack, what to wear, where to eat, were to go on day trips, and so much more.

The friends we stayed with (Americans) had been living in Rio for several months and said the advice was dead on. They also learned a thing or two from the book. You don't have to be young, or a partier to love this book. If you're going to Rio, you need this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great reference.......2007-03-10

I used this book throughout my vacaction in Rio it was great. It gives you a breakdown by day of which clubs are good and type. It was like having your own tour guide. I showed it to a few locals whom didn't even know items that were in the book.

4 out of 5 stars Another day in paradise.......2007-01-14

I've been traveling to Rio for business/vacations for several years now, and have become truly addicted to the culture, and the impossibly breathtaking views of the beaches and the women. Maybe not in that order. I picked up this guide when I was already a Copacabana veteran. It is concise and very helpful for the newbie venturing out into new territory. There is a serious culture barrier here with few people speaking English, so you are pretty much on your own without a running buddy. Yes, Rio is paradise beyond anything you can imagine, and yes, it can be very dangerous, particularly at night time. Your stuff will be stolen on the beach if left unattended. Pickpockets are everywhere. But when you read all the precautions, scams, and advice you will quickly acclimate to the environment.

This book is penned for a great short-time tourist experience, with plenty of sightseeing spots, restaurants, and nightclubs to visit. (club names change often). As far as the women, they are everywhere, and give you the great girlfriend experience that is near impossible to find back home. The language barrier makes it tough to pick up regular girls clubbing in tourist areas. Brazilians tend to hang together. My advice would be to listen to Pimsleur Portuguese tapes prior to your visit to get a rudimentary head start.

For short term visitors looking to save time and want to be smothered in women, for arranging the sure thing just pick up Brett Tate's The Hedonist: World Sex Guide - Single Male Erotic Vacations in Rio, Costa Rica, Thailand, Carribean and much more, which has extensive pay for play advice for Rio and 20 other cities. A word of warning to first time visitors. This place is mesmerizing. Don't surprised if you find yourself hugging a girlfriend at the airport, sobbing in broken childish gringo Portuguese "please don't make me leave." One more thing. You're not that special. She'll be hugging another sobbing guy at the airport in a few days.

4 out of 5 stars Great read.......2007-01-10

and excellent restaurant suggestions here. This book was all over Rio de Janeiro so it's become very popular, it makes up for Frommers Guide to Rio by suggesting some excellent restaurants and entertainment ideas that Frommers fails to mention. A definitely plus for the Rio bound!!!

5 out of 5 stars Damm good book........2007-01-10

I you go to Rio, and don't have any one there to show you around, then don't leave without this book. Actually even if you have someone there, take the book. You will enjoy Rio a lot more that way. The author also has a great web page with basically the content of the book and daily updates of what to do. Unfortunately (not for me), is not in English (Spanish, German, French, Italian, and Portuguese). Buy a month or so before you go, and read it and select the places you want to go. There is so much to do in Rio.

5 out of 5 stars Great time and money saver.......2007-08-11

I searched Amazon forever for a singles vacation guide and finally found this little nugget.

The only Bachelor's travel guide you'll need. Take Conde Naste, Lonely Planet, and add women, sports, and testosterone and you've got the Hedonist. These are all party cities, mostly tropic locations, with great fishing and golf at each. Complete travel advice on each city; customs, visas, sports companies to use, taxis, hotels, and the underground clubs to visit. For daytime activity, you'll find all the tourist stuff as well. Short, sweet and to the point. I've taken two trips and the advice was spot on, plus this book is witty and interesting; a hoot to read. All original, there's nothing copied here. This is the only book of it's kind. Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2007-08-11

Did not see any value to this book at all. I bought another book by the same author and found half he copied to this book.

5 out of 5 stars What a great book!.......2007-06-17

The Holy Grail for enjoying high level sports and fun loving women. Everyone has the travel bug. Tate does us all a great favor by passing the torch to his favorite honey holes around the world. The Hedonist is a very fascinating page turner, isn't full of irrelevant blather, and is geared exactly for what younger men want to do. It saves hours with all it's shortcuts. Besides, the author is pretty hilarious to read.

This book has actually increased my productivity at work, since I have future travel goals in mind. I focus and produce and skip out of town. I easily pay for the trips just by no longer wasting time and cash in nightclubs dealing the whiny, entitlement mentality of women here.

5 out of 5 stars Work hard and spoil yourself.......2007-06-17

This is a great vacation guide for exploring different regions around all corners of the globe. For sports fanatics like me, you will no longer have to waste hours trying to find the next spot. I highly recommend it; I've done 4 trips so far, and the book was very accurate in giving me a clear picture of what to expect before arriving, and how to maximize my time there. I get a big kick of reading and reading about each city, as I plan for the next vacation.

5 out of 5 stars The Fat Cat vacation guide.......2007-06-04

Having now taken two of the trips in this book, I can highly recommend it, and say that Tate is clearly an expert on putting together the ultimate guy's vacation guide. What guy doesn't love great golf courses, world class ocean fishing, casinos, and hot young women chasing you every where you go?

The Costa Rica trip my buddies and I was one of the most slamming, funny, outrageous times I've ever had. (On a side note, I've walked around with a Hotel del Rey baseball cap on, and I've had complete strangers stop me and share stories numerous times.) The sail fishing on the west coast is some of the best in the world for quantity, and fast action. They just hit everytime you turn around. We had runs for both sail fish and we hit a dorado run that was incredible; we hooked 40 fish on a one day trip. We stayed at the hotel Tate recommended, Marriot Los Suenos, and played their golf course, and it was beautiful to say the least. Smack dab in the middle of a rain forest, with great views of the coastal line. This trip rocks just for the sports; the women of course are the icing on the cake, and they certainly were some hotties; plenty to go around. What a trip! Seriously guys. Buy this book and take some of the trips he lays out.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious, Exciting and Fantastic.......2006-04-27

The South American Table contains authentic flavorful recipes from South America.

Maria Baez Kijac is a food writer, cooking instructor and culinary historian. She was born and raised in Quito, Ecuador and spent 15 years researching this book.

Coming from a native of South American and currently living in the United States, Baez Kijac knows what we are missing in our lives - genuine South American foods! Having lived in South America myself, I see that South American food is gaining in popularity but is still under-recognized. This cookbook helps people enjoy a variety of dishes without focusing too greatly on one area of the continent.

Her recipes are easy-to-follow and extremely flavorful! I was happy to see some of my favorites in here too!

If you enjoyed "The Book of Latin American Cooking" by Elisabeth Lambert Ortiz, then you will love "The South American Table" by Maria Baez Kijac!

4 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!.......2005-08-12

I just bought this book today and have yet to cook from it (hence holding off on the 5th star) but this is what I was looking for in a South American cookbook. While others may give a brief intro about a dish, Ms. Kijac gives several pages of history and background that really helps one understand this cuisine. The book is so well-researched that one can see it was truly a labor of love. The food glossary is a big bonus! My only criticism is that each recipe is not associated with its country of origin.

5 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook.......2004-02-23

My wife, who studies many cookbooks, said that it was a wonderful book with many delicious recipes. She made me a terrific dish from book and asked me to get her a copy as a present.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2004-02-11

I recently took this book out on loan from my local libary, but love it so much, I'm going to buy a copy for myself. I am half-Colombian and grew up in New York where South American cuisine, particularly Colombian, was plentiful (from homecooked, family meals to countless restaurants in Queens). I've been living in California for ten years and often long for an authentic sancocho, platanos, arepas, empanadas, aji piques, etc, but have never had any luck. Now, with these recipes and the wonderfully informative glossary of South American ingredients - and where to get them - I can make the meals I love so much myself and discover so many others. I especially enjoyed the brief history of the South American cuisine.

5 out of 5 stars The Guru on Hispanic Recipes.......2004-02-04

An elaborated acomplishment it deserves praise for such an acomplishment. A great reference and guide to foods from Latin America. Maria Kijac presents a complete and extense set of recipe with simplicity.
Definetly a must for the food lover that likes to cook every day something nutritious and diferent.

So far the best recipe book ever made for the Hispanic Market

1 out of 5 stars not recieved.......2007-10-03

I have not recieved this product, charged to my credit card about 6 weeks ago, estimated by shipper to arrive Sept 4, it's now Oct 3 and no book. E-mailed Amazon but no answer to the e-mail, just this undoubtedly machine generated message inviting comments. OK there it is. Are we going to deep-six our society in automation?

5 out of 5 stars excellent review.......2007-06-13

I have studied and read this book as well as taken the course taught by the author. I have found this method of learning medical Spanish to be highly effective. I immediately was able to connect and communicate more effectively with my patients that speak Spanish only. I recommend this book to any medical professional that wishes to communicate more clearly with their Spanish speaking patients. All it takes is a little effort!!!

5 out of 5 stars Solid medical dictionary.......2007-05-13

This is a solid medical dictionary that even has sections about folk and herbal remedies and cultural recommendations for folks from various backgrounds in the Spanish-speaking world. I highly recommend it, espcially as a companion to other online, disc-based or live Spanish instruction. The sections are well organized by medical discipline or symptoms and covers terms the medical or helping professional is most likely to run across.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2007-01-08

This book is exactly what I hoped for!

If you are a fairly intelligent, motivated learner who wants to start with the basics, progress quickly to the conversational level, and get a good grasp of grammar while learning medical words and phrases, this is the book for you.

I am now almost halfway through the book, and I have learned grammar, vocabulary, all the body parts I could ever need, and even slang words!

Another thing I like is that terms used in different parts of the Spanish-speaking world are discussed, so you will know which word to use, depending where you are (or where your patient is from).

Each chapter is broken down into sections. Each section starts with some vocabulary (and an accompanying picture). Then there might be a grammatical discussion or a discussion of how to talk about taking pills. Then there are some exercises (this is the only thing I think there could be more of, but you can always make up your own sentences for practice).

What this book is not: It is not a list of medical phrases that you have to memorize. That has been my experience with every other medical Spanish book... if that is what you are looking for, you are better off with a CD. However, I doubt you will really become conversational after memorizing a bunch of phrases.

It also is not great about helping you with pronounciation. However, you probably know 100 other people who speak Spanish, so just ask one of them to go through your vocabulary with you!

Bottom line: a perfect book for nurses, NP's, PA's, MD's who want to communicate better with their patients.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-08-27

Thought this book included the CDs. . .it appears you can't get the complete set anywhere, even from the publisher. Sorry, but reading pronunciations in a book just doesn't cut it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Well written! Well worth reading!!!.......2006-04-23

I've made a spot on my bookshelf for Digital Audio Essentials from O'Reilly Publishing. Bruce and Marty Fries are authors par excellance. Rarely will you encounter the fine points of audio so eloquently expressed. I've read several books about digital audio. Typically, as the author attempts an failed explanation I find myself thinking, "Boy, if I didn't already fully understand that concept, I'd be totally stumped!"

Although I have several years of experience with analog and digital audio, I gained many insights from this book. It provided countless clarifications, a host of resources, and it resolved many of my "never fully answered" questions!

O'Reilly's Digital Audio Essentials should prove helpful for beginners too; however it's a probably a better fit for those already at an intermediate level with audio. At times the authors use lots of music/audio vocabulary, so Digital Audio Essentials might be a bit of a stretch for complete beginners. Otherwise I found it perfectly paced: it presents topics in an orderly and logical manner, it expertly escorts you to considerable depths, and most terms are clearly defined as they're introduced.

The book reveals facts oft' overlooked ... and I especially like its knack for clairvoyantly addressing questions that arise in the back of your mind. For instance, when it says, `Never attempt to remove dust from a vinyl LP with a dry brush,' it explains that rubbing a dry brush on your LP charges the vinyl with enough static electricity to suck the dust right back to its surface-with a grip tighter than before! (And to make matters worse, previously disinterested airborne dust now finds your LP distinctly attractive!)

Digital Audio Essentials is 340 pages in all. I've read several chapters fully and browsed most of the others.

Music digitization is a topic of continuing interest for many DVMUG members. To help convey the quality and depth of Digital Audio Essentials, I'll provide summary of chapter 14, which is all about digitizing.

Digitizing Your Records and Tapes contains 23 pages of articulate and up-to-date audio wisdom. It's packed with information vital for anyone new to digitizing music; this information is equally valuable to those interested in improving their workflow and the quality of their audio projects.

It begins with an interesting, detailed, historical account of the evolution of analog recording: i.e. Edison's cylinders, the Gramophone turntable, shellac and vinyl records, and tape. It discusses the original analog audio format wars (yes, those began long before VHS vs. BetaMax) and it chronicles the eventual rise of the 33 RPM LP ... and the once ubiquitous cassette.

The remaining 20 pages cover various digitizing topics. There's lots of thoughtful, sage advice and a list of things to know. Tips on preparing for analog recording: cleaning vinyl, choosing of turntable and stylus, demagnetizing tape playback heads. There also a discussion of noise reduction (when to apply) and a survey of methods for saving your work as individual tracks.

To avoid redundancy, the authors refer the reader to chapters 9 11 and 13, Digital Audio Format, Recording and Ripping, and Editing Audio. These provide a detailed introduction to hard disk recording, audio interfaces, editing principles, and editing software.

Other chapters include: an overview of music on computers, software audio players, music on the web, Internet radio, podcasts, etc. There's a three chapter section that introduces audio terminology and concepts, file formats, and there's a four chapter section on capturing and editing audio. (Chapter 14, jusst reviewed, is one of those.

This book is so good I almost hate to point out a couple of issues, but I found three in chapter 14.

1) The reader is told that they must remain nearby and attentive when recording from vinyl, so they can manually stop Peak - otherwise it will haplessly fill your entire hard drive with the sound the phonograph needle endlessly orbiting the LP's final groove. (Peak is made by bias-inc.com)

Actually, Peak has a built-in timer. Just set it for the play time of your analog recording ... plus a minute extra so it doesn't accidentally cut off too early. Then you can start recording and attend to other affairs. When you return, Peak will have captured a complete side of the recording and stepped automatically out of record mode.

For the record (pun retained), you may traumatize your stylus if you leave it circling the LP's the final groove for long ... I heard this is the case So after all, perhaps it's wise to stay nearby when recording from vinyl. However, when digitizing cassettes and the like with Peak, there's no need to baby-sit. Set the timer and go.

2) The authors advise us to record an entire side of an LP or cassette into a single audio file. I agree, this far more convenient than performing a "record-stop-save" scenario for each song. Plus there are significant advantages in keeping "album related" audio within a single file. For one, it's easy to apply operations to all tracks! You can more easily "master" your material because you can switch between tracks and audition them.

A "digitized album side" is a large audio file that contains several individual songs. However, if burned to a CD, or played in iTunes, it will behave like a single track that contains several songs. The book acknowledges this and provides a number of methods for manually splitting the file into "regions." It mentions automatic splitting methods as well.

However the authors erroneously state that, if you want individual tracks, you must save each region to a separate file. This approach works, that's true, but it's time consuming, and it overlooks a great feature in Peak called PlayLists.

A Peak playlist is simply a collection of regions.

You can burn CDs directly from Peak's PlayList window. Additionally you can customize the playback order of the regions you've defined, omit various regions, setgain, and set gaps between tracks. Using V-Box (a provided plug-in) you can add effects such as equalization, reverb, and noise reduction ... all on a "per track" basis!

Then you can burn your play list directly to a CD, with effects if you wish. Alternately, with a single click you can export a series of individual files to the audio file format of your choice: Wav, AIFF, MP3. You can also save to JAM image file. You can always "bounce" the effects to make them permanent.

Yet none of these actions effect your original digital recording! In digital audio terms, this is called non destructive manipulation. Therein lies the beauty of Playlists - they handle all these effects and choices on the fly. And you can create multiple Playlists that you can use with a single audio document, essentially remastering the original.

3) The only other omission I encountered pertained to stereo system hookup. On stereo systems or music players without "line out" or "record out," you can run a cable from the headphone jack to the input of your audio interface or sound card. Granted, this routes the signal through the headphone amp, which may generate some noise, so if you have a line-level output or "record out," use it. In a pinch remember that you can tap the signal from any headphone jack. If the signal is too hot, simply lower your stereo system's or audio player's volume, or lower the input volume on your audio interface.

4) Assuredly, Recording and Ripping (chapter 11) was an overly ambitious undertaking, resulting in fairly a weak presentation. But then, how could anyone do justice to such a broad topic in just 13 pages? I don't doubt the author's opinions, rather I wish they'd provided a few more scenarios. That would have added a sense of the vast range of possibilities. On the other hand Chapter 13, Editing Audio, is a shining example of how much ground good authors can quickly cover.
??
I highly recommend this title for its overall clarity, its friendly non-nonsense tone, and the wealth of information presented.

5 out of 5 stars useful information......................2005-10-09

the value of this text will ultimately be a function of one's mathematics background as well as the degree of familiarity with audio. personally, i found the book to be an excellent "update" to the previous text..!! keep in mind that the field of digital audio is changing SO RAPIDLY that it is virtually impossible to keep up with the changes ...from an authors standpoint........ be that as it may, most will derive more than satisfactory information from the revised edition.!

5 out of 5 stars Virtually every facet of the latest technology being used to capture and edit music.......2005-09-05

Bruce and Marty Fries' Digital Audio Essentials shows how to legally download and share music, how to hook a PC or Mac to a home stereo, how to record music to hard drive: virtually every facet of the latest technology being used to capture and edit music. Newcomers in particular will appreciate clear explanations of digital audio features, tutorials which are easy to follow, and both hardware and software recommendations.

2 out of 5 stars Condescending yet opaque.......2005-08-09

I didn't learn much from this book, and I don't think it was just me. I'm afraid it is one of those books written by knowledgeable people for a general audience, without much understanding of who are in that audience or what they might want to know.

Example: "Rumble is very low-frequency noise caused by acoustic feedback, tone arm resonance, motor vibration, and other problems in a turntable." How many readers need to know what "rumble" means but already know about "acoustic feedback" and "tone arm resonance"? And what are they meant to do with the information? The discussion ends there.

Sorry to have to contradict the generally good reviews. I notice, though, that they are mainly from other wizards who think somebody might benefit from the book -- not from people who actually have.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book in terms of coverage and depth.......2005-08-07

Every now and then you find a reference text that just seems to get it right. This is one of them. The authors cover the subject broadly, and at a reasonable and consistent level of depth. Unlike other books that simply cover the obvious, this book anticipates and answers the questions that one needs to get started and become self-sufficient with digital audio. It covers some of the more esoteric elements as well. Musicians and engineers should look elsewhere or expect to supplement this book with specialized material. However, the average PC user who understands Windows and MS Office well enough, but wants to get going with PC-based music and the like will be really happy with this book. You don't need another one. In addition, it is very well written - clear and succinct. A favorite of mine and a benchmark for "help book" writers.

In beautiful, often very detailed photos, this book shows different tattoo styles, including very realistic tattoos, of which it is hard to believe these are actually tattoos. If you consider getting tattooed by one of the best artists and want something to inspire you, then certainly this book can be a great help to make yourself acquainted with the amazing possibilities of the most modern tattooing techniques, when applied by the most skilled Tattoo Artists. And once you got your own, very best Tattoo Art, who knows this book will be a great reminder of how you started to prepare yourself to obtain that personal Art.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best tat books yet.......2005-12-27

I may be a bit biased as my fiancee is featured in this book (pg. 94), but I think this is one of the best tattoo books I've had the pleasure of looking at. While some of the designs chosen are a bit simplistic for my taste, it shows a wide range of tattoos in color and also black work.
I like that it doesn't just feature big name artists. The author took into account many artists no matter how well known, based on their talent (which is how it should be). The photographs are amazing and you won't believe some of them are tattoos because they look so real.
This is well worth the small price that is being asked for it. Any fan of tattooing would be pleased with the work in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Tattoos.......2005-12-22

This is an Excellent Book on Tattoos. The variety and quality of both the tattoos and the photos of them are extremely good. I have not got to read the text yet, I have been so engrossed in the photos. The book does not focus on just the big name tattooists like a lot of books out there, but this has not held back on the quality and originality of the pieces in the book.

They've written so many of these guides that they are becoming a tad generic on their advice. I bought this and found a lot of information outdated to inaccurate when I arrived. However, if you're not planning on going to Rio right away, and find yourself very curious about this great city, I would definitely recommend it. It is very interesting, and completely different to western culture. If you're young and into the singles scene, or on business like I was and want more of a sure thing with brazilian women, I would recommend adding with this title The Hedonist: World Sex Guide - Single Male Erotic Vacations in Rio, Costa Rica, Thailand, Carribean and much more

Side note. There are very specific visas, with very specific requirements that you have to have to go there.

Book Description

Donna M. Goldstein challenges much of what we think we know about the "culture of poverty." Drawing on more than a decade of experience in Brazil, Goldstein provides an intimate portrait of everyday life among the women of the favelas, or urban shantytowns. These women have created absurdist and black-humor storytelling practices in the face of trauma and tragedy. Goldstein helps us to understand that such joking and laughter is part of an emotional aesthetic that defines the sense of frustration and anomie endemic to the political and economic desperation of the shantytown.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Up close and personal with Brazilian culture.......2005-03-25

Laughter Out of Place is a wonderful ethnography in a number of ways. It captures an incredible depth of understanding of lives of the urban poor women and their families in a favela. It reveals the complexity of their predicaments, and their predicaments are many:
How can one try to move up in the society without reproducing the beliefs about black female sexual allure?
How can Gloria keep her children in line, out of prison and alive but also how can she prevent them from joining a gang?
How can she inflict harsh punishments on her children and at the same time witness the perpetual pampering of the middle and upper class children?
How can young men in the favela stay out of gangs in a situation where there are virtually no economic opportunities for them and they are constantly criminalized by the elite?
How can middle and upper classes stop their dependence on domestic workers without lowering their own class standing?
How can the women in the favela break the cycle of domination and refuse domestic work when sex work is one of the only other viable alternatives for them?
How can a black consciousness movement develop among people who believe that calling someone 'black' is an insult?
These are just a few of very complex predicaments that Laughter Out of Place reveals to the reader through a great depth of analysis and wonderful story-telling.
What might be most interesting, however, is that even though so much of the book is about violence -- either actual or symbolic -- Goldstein chose the lens of humor through which to cast the story. This choice might seem odd at the first glance but at the end of the book it is clear that the framework of humor as a survivalist strategy and also as a place of disjunction between aesthetics of the poor and aesthetics of the middle and upper classes brings all aspects of Goldstein?s work together. This book is also written with a clarity of thought that I believe will draw both academic and non-academic audiences.

5 out of 5 stars Laughter and Life in a Favela.......2004-02-10

Within the first few pages of Laughter Out of Place, I realized that Dr. Goldstein was going to embark on ethnographic analysis in a more personal vein. The introduction reads like a personal reflection of her time spent in "Felicidade Eterna," folding in memories of the people she met into a journal-styled ethnography, of the kind introduced to us by Ruth Behar. I found Donna's approach refreshing: a reader knew where she stood on issues, and there were no concealed objectivities in her observations. Donna's personality comes through in her writing in her style -which does not back away from harsh realities, nor delve into idealized or romanticized metaphors for Brazilian music, sex, or style. I found large scale conclusions were lacking, but her small conclusions peppered within her dialogue were cogent: clearly understood and explained by her observations.

Looking at the book's format in an overall construction, I thought she made an interesting and deliberate choice in segmenting the book around particular phenomena of favela culture. The overarching concept - of laughter in the favelas that seemed to be out of place - ran through the book, but other subjects like the aesthetics of domination, black cinderelllas, short-term childhoods, gangs and violence, and the carnivalization of desire focused the book into themes particularized to the society of the favela. The choice of these themes and I can guess were synthesized from coded observations. The phenomena addressed were concrete and drew Donna's discursive writing style along into interesting, relevant, and "involving" territory. She used theory to bolster her arguments, but didn't saddle the story with overwhelming treatises. The choice of ethnographic writing - employing themes - makes me curious though. Does the use of themes artificially differentiate the life in the favela from our own, or other social conditions where poverty subjugates its population? Are we getting a picture of what life is like there, or rather of what particularizes life in the favela from our existences?

Admittedly though the book is seductive in drawing the reader into the discussion. And issues touched upon in the book can be applied to many other geographies. Donna does not try to ingratiate herself in pure relativism, as she says, she is often shocked by the ironic attitudes of the people who seem to accept their fate much more humorously than Donna imagined prior to her experience in Felicidade. She takes issue with some theortists, including Foucault, presenting and then unraveling their theoretical positioning. She also disparages the study of elites, or "cosmopolitan intellectuals, or transnational social movements" as a form of "ethnographic refusal," and a condition "that would fail to provide density to our representations, sanitize politics," or produce "thin version of culture with a set of dissolving actors" (43). Donna does not hold back.

In her review of Donna Goldstein's book, Nancy Shepar-Hughes mentions that Golstein's book will not come without controversy because it may be painted in a "culture-of-poverty" conceptual framework. But I don't see that happening in this case because Goldstein concentrates on the conditions of life and the subsequent actions of people mired in a difficult situation and in the fragile structure of the favela. Donna is also quick to point out that she herself does not understand - at all times - the social structures in place. For example, out of generosity Donna sets aside some money for Soneca to attend a computer institute. The idea does not succeed and Gloria, the main informant of the book, is annoyed by the waste of valuable resources.

Donna also employs modern electronic resources to make her point, and bring the reader directly into current attitudes and stereotyping concerning "Brazilian Mulatas." She enters a search engine with those exact two words and finds dozens of porn sites exemplifying popular viewpoints related to sexuality in Brazil. She points out many of the inconsistentsies and ironic attitudes present in the favelas regarding sexuality and race. Gloria, for instance, views the white coroa taking on a dark skinned lover as evidence for a "reluctance of Afro-Brazilian women to interpret certain kinds of interactions as racist" (124).

While all of the discussion in Laughter Out of Place is interesting, for me the discussions on violence and gangs are/were most relevant in a changing second and third world. One can imagine the "trajectory into criminality by young men as a form of local knowledge (and as a vehicle for advancement)..." (203). Indeed, after the descriptions given of the lifestyle, poverty, abuse, and of course humor that saturate the favela, one can clearly see the seductive link of falling into gang violence and criminality. Donna also clearly demonstrates the functionality of bandit existence, quoting and borrowing from Hobsbawm the reasoning behind the formation of "primitive rebels:" "Social banditry becomes a form of self-help in the context of economic crises and social tension" (209).

In Donna's short but cogent conclusion she does not try to offer monumental solutions to the problems she sees, but nevertheless her astute observations and solutions provided are idealistic and perhaps unrealistic. She points to endemic problems in the favela such as the "differential application of the rule of law," and the need to "reform policing forces" bringing an end to corruption and abuse" (273). She points out that in order for drug traffickers and gangs to be removed from the favela, "'good faith' social services need to be put in place to treat the everyday private injustices that are currently being handled by such organizations" (274). Like so many impoverished societies, an infrastructure or support girdle of municipal services needs to be put in place (or reformed) to aid all segments of the society of Rio. This remains a common need for societies battling poverty. Great ethnography and seductive reading examining a micro-world of global inequality.

5 out of 5 stars A book for jacks of all trades..........2004-01-25

As a graduate student in cultural anthropology, I find Goldstein's book to be an important contribution to modern-day anthropology. As a good example of "on the ground" anthropology, this ethnography's greatest strength lies in the material itself, specifically those social issues that CANNOT and MUST NOT be classified as social phenomena (i.e. racism, class conflict, and structural and everyday forms of violence) attributable of a bygone era. By focusing specifically on the social, familial, and economic relationships of her main informant (Glória), Goldstein illustrates how Glória's experiences-as well as her friends' and family members'-are microcosmic examples of how the lives of Rio's urban poor continue to be characterized by these very real and contemporary issues. Often relegated to favelas in the Rio's Zona Norte, members of Brazil's enormous lower class encounter social and economic hardships that most-if not all-of us will only experience through ethnographic description. In my opinion, "Laughter Out of Place" is one ethnography that successfully and sensitively sheds some light-however depressing-on these realities.

I believe that "Laughter Out of Place" successfully interweaves both theory and ethnographic data in what is a cohesive and coherent final product. In reference to theory, Goldstein's explicit theoretical discussions are not only interesting, but also helpful in trying to wrap your brain around such difficult subjects as rape, police violence, and extreme poverty. For example, she utilizes theories of political economy, cultural capital, and Freyre's "myth of racial democracy" to better understand-and best convey-the complexity of the situations she witnessed in the early 1990s. Additionally, the ethnographic content is well proportioned to the amount of theoretical material included in the book. At times, the `thickness' of the ethnographic material is overwhelming, but this is necessary when writing of extremely depressing scenarios like those so prevalent in the culture of Rio's favelas.

One of the most endearing and unique aspects of "Laughter Out of Place" is at the heart of the ethnography: the examination of how a particular cultural group comes to use a specific coping mechanism (`black humor') to confront their lived realities and hardships. Goldstein skillfully shows that this adaptation is undoubtedly culturally constructed and culturally specific to life in Rio's favelas, particularly Felicidade Eterna. For as Nancy Scheper-Hughes and Philippe Bourgois suggest in the Forward, Goldstein clearly reveals "the layers of bravado, anger, defiance, and deep sadness that are built into each complex joke."

Lastly, I should mention that I reflected on my own coping mechanisms while contemplating Goldstein's detailed discussion of laughter `out of place.' As a result, I ask myself: How do I deal with pain, stress, and death in my own life? How do we in our own subcultures choose to cope collectively with our own economic, social, and political situations? The very fact that I reflect in such a personal-as well as anthropological-way makes me appreciate "Laughter Out of Place" that much more.

5 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for all Anthropology students..........2004-01-09

Donna Goldstein, a professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has written a true anthropological/ethnographic masterpiece. After many years of field work and manuscript writing, Goldstein's book should be added to nationwide anthro department reading lists. Each chapter deals with the core issues that any cultural anthropologist must come to terms with: gender, race, class, and violence. Black humor is also an underlying theme.

As a student of anthropology, this book changed my perspective regarding my area of study. After reading many of the required ethnographies and anthropological works for my major, Laughter out of Place was like a breath of fresh air. Goldstein's style is truly beautiful and poignant. Her storytelling style and descriptions of poverty, racism, rape, and violence cut to the core. Furthermore, the explanations of various cultural and social theories are not dry-- they flow with the rest of the book (thus making it accessible to those who are not students of anthropology).

Goldstein also does a fine job of demonstrating to the reader that although her book reflects upon her experiences in Brazil, it also stands as a symbol for any people in any country who suffer from having been "colonized".

I highly recommend this book to anyone. However, I would especially emphasize its importance for students of anthropology. This is definitely the book that will remind you of why we study anthropology: to come to an understanding of other cultures and why injustices exist in this world.

5 out of 5 stars must-read for Brazilian on-lookers.......2003-11-05

Laughter out of Place is crucial reading for those interested in exploring the hardships of Brazil and the spunk that keeps a population of oppressed and impoverished people dancing, singing, and always eager to laugh. Goldstein takes the reader through the gutters and alleys of a Rio shantytown, sharing years of experience as both a fieldworker, and a personal friend to many of the book's feisty characters. Laughter portrays the unbearableness of shantytown life and how it is expressed through laughter, ridicule, and trickery that seem inappropriate to outsiders.

From my own experience of living and working in a Brazilian shantytown, I can with say confidence that Laughter out of Place is an authentic and well-researched exploration of shantytown survival tactics in Brazil. For any person interested in learning about the Brazil that lies outside of Carnival and beautiful beaches, this book is your transport.

4 out of 5 stars Belongs in every "Mexican" cooking kitchen!.......2007-09-17

As a fan of Chevy's Fresh Mex restaurants, I was surprised to see they'd give away their secret recipes to the public. But it probably increased patronage of the restaurants. A smart move. A great little cookbook. To me, worth it for just three recipes alone -- the "master sauce" Chipotle Puree (that I always make with canned chipotles in adobo, by the way, not dried chilies), the Sweet Chipotle dressing, and the fish tacos. I always keep a jar of that chipotle puree in my frig. Just a tablespoon seasons so many recipes and it keeps for weeks. As expected for most restaurant cookbooks, many recipes are not simple, but require other recipes as "ingredients". The fish tacos is one, but is well worth the effort. As a local cooking teacher where I live, I've taught several classes based on the recipes in this book -- all to raves!

4 out of 5 stars Good recipes - nice glossy pages. . . different cover than pictured.......2007-07-03

My only complaint with this book has more to do with amazon than this book. The book I received was an earlier edition, not the updated version as shown in the pictures. The recipes are wonderful with beautiful pictures and explanations. It also gives unique ideas for hosting your own Mexican theme celebration.

3 out of 5 stars missing the most important recipe.......2007-01-17

We bought this primarily because we had read that it had the recipe for tortilla soup and also because we hoped that it would have a recipe for their salsa. Unfortunately, it has neither. That being said, it's still a half way decent cookbook, and was pretty cheap.

4 out of 5 stars What I Expected from Chevy's.......2005-09-23

Everything you would want from this very good Tex Mex chain is in this book - including their famous salsa. A good buy, if you're as big a fan as I am.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but much prep........2005-09-04

This is a very good cookbook, but it requires building a pantry full of intersecting recipes/prepared bases vitally important to creating end result dishes in this book. To attempt to do it all from the ground up, virtually at ground zero would take you days to complete an entire/full meal setting. (Something to consider when purchasing this book.)
Conceptually the book is great, the concept being fresh ingredients prepared in a traditional way--but overall preparation is very time consuming, indeed.
