Amazon.com's Best of 2001

To the list of great American child narrators that includes Huck Finn and Scout Finch, let us now add Reuben "Rube" Land, the asthmatic 11-year-old boy at the center of Leif Enger's remarkable first novel, Peace Like a River. Rube recalls the events of his childhood, in small-town Minnesota circa 1962, in a voice that perfectly captures the poetic, verbal stoicism of the northern Great Plains. "Here's what I saw," Rube warns his readers. "Here's how it went. Make of it what you will." And Rube sees plenty.

In the winter of his 11th year, two schoolyard bullies break into the Lands' house, and Rube's big brother Davy guns them down with a Winchester. Shortly after his arrest, Davy breaks out of jail and goes on the lam. Swede is Rube's younger sister, a precocious writer who crafts rhymed epics of romantic Western outlawry. Shortly after Davy's escape, Rube, Swede, and their father, a widowed school custodian, hit the road too, swerving this way and that across Minnesota and North Dakota, determined to find their lost outlaw Davy. In the end it's not Rube who haunts the reader's imagination, it's his father, torn between love for his outlaw son and the duty to do the right, honest thing. Enger finds something quietly heroic in the bred-in-the-bone Minnesota decency of America's heartland. Peace Like a River opens up a new chapter in Midwestern literature. --Claire Dederer

Book Description

Hailed as one of the year's top five novels by Time, and selected as one of the best books of the year by nearly all major newspapers, national bestseller Peace Like a River captured the hearts of a nation in need of comfort. "A rich mixture of adventure, tragedy, and healing," Peace Like a River is "a collage of legends from sources sacred and profane -- from the Old Testament to the Old West, from the Gospels to police dramas" (Ron Charles, The Christian Science Monitor). In "lyrical, openhearted prose" (Michael Glitz, The New York Post), Enger tells the story of eleven-year-old Reuben Land, an asthmatic boy who has reason to believe in miracles. Along with his sister and father, Reuben finds himself on a cross-country search for his outlaw older brother who has been controversially charged with murder. Their journey is touched by serendipity and the kindness of strangers, and its remarkable conclusion shows how family, love, and faith can stand up to the most terrifying of enemies, the most tragic of fates. Leif Enger's "miraculous" (Valerie Ryan, The Seattle Times) novel is a "perfect book for an anxious time ... of great literary merit that nonetheless restores readers' faith in the kindness of stories" (Marta Salij, Detroit Free Press).

2 out of 5 stars a matter of taste.......2007-09-18

This book came highly recommended to me by a long time friend I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as she did. There is a very persistent and deep religious theme which might appeal to a lot of people but which I found tiresome
The author tries to achieve a combination of Mark Twain americana and a strain of magical realism but the writing style wears thin. The narration is from the point of view of an 11 year old boy who is a sympathetic character but it has a tone of irony which is unconvincing for the time and place and the characters
The basic story is too thin for the number of pages and stream of consciousness taken to tell it and rather than wishing it would never end I found myself thinking "WILL it never end?"
Nonetheless, I think for a reader less analytical and more sentimental than I am, it would be a totally satisfactory, memory piece I can see why some reviewers are rhapsodic, but it didn't have that affect on me.

3 out of 5 stars It was okay!!.......2007-09-12

The book was enjoyable but very verbose. At times I found myself wondering which story was I reading for, to me, there was too much story within a story.

5 out of 5 stars My oh my..........2007-08-10

As I read this book I had to keep going to the back flap to stare at Mr. Enger's face. I am not sure why except that I needed to see the face of the person who wrote this most incredible, lovely story.

I looked back at some of the other reviews and you should know by now what this story is about.

What you don't know until you read it is how beautifully it is written. I can't find the words to describe Mr. Enger's writing style - except to say as a writer I am jealous. He uses words unlike any other author I have read before.

But this is such a sweet, sad, simply wonderful story. Treat yourself to a scrumptious read.

5 out of 5 stars Read it to your kids.......2007-08-09

I've just re-read Peace Like a River, this time aloud to my nine-year-old daughter. There's much in Enger's prose that flew as high over her head as a Canada goose. But not the story, or Enger's richly-drawn characters, or the hope that a miracle might arrive at just the right time.

It is a magical thing to see this story unfold through a child's wide eyes. I watched my daughter literally jump up and down with delight when Jeremiah set out to court Roxanna... saw her scowl upon each arrival of the "putrid fed" Andreeson, hating him every bit as much as Swede... felt her squeeze my hand tight as we came to the book's climax, and then smiled as she took a long, deep breath and told me, "Okay. You can finish."

And what conversations we had as we were reading! We talked of honor and faith and loving our enemies. She wants to know more about Huckleberry Finn and Robinson Crusoe and Butch Cassidy. She wants to know how I "courted" her mom. She wants an Airstream trailer.

She'll come back to this book, I'm sure. Each time she does she'll find something new to enjoy. And I imagine that years from now she'll find a battered old copy at a garage sale or used book store, and she'll read the story to her nine-year-old. Peace Like a River has the markings of a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2007-07-30

This is one of the best books I've ever read. I wasn't sure if I'd like it in the beginning when the plot seemed to be heading in a bleak direction, but I'm glad I stayed with it. It's a book that uplifts your spirit and gives you hope. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Ability to provide a realistic and unembellished,.......2007-06-05

With forewords by highly regarded evangelical author/pastor John MacArthur and internationally known author/speaker Joni Eareckson Tada, a quality read is an expected "given," and throughout the entirety of this autobiographical sketch of classical guitarist Christopher Parkening, there won't be any disappointments. Parkening characterizes his early childhood years as ones strongly influenced by his demanding father. Given to high, some might say unreasonably steep, expectations, Christopher's childhood was very different from most youngsters. His father, also a gifted musician, saw something rare and wonderful in Christopher at a young age and demanded perfectionism and drill sergeant-like discipline from him. Through hours of daily practice, beginning at 5:00 a.m. Christopher honed his skills, filed his nails just so, and practiced, practiced and practiced some more.

At age 12, Christopher's parents gave him the Segovia Golden Jubilee three-record set as his birthday gift. Not too long after, his entire family attended Andres Segovia's concert where he was also able to meet the master in person. Never having forgotten that moment when Segovia patted Christopher's cheek, he was more inspired than ever to succeed. Under the tutelage of Celedonio and Pepe Romeros, Christopher and his father studied Pepe's every move, "from his hand position to his sitting position to his techniques for increasing speed."

Frustrated that Christopher was unable to advance his speed, father and son realized that Christopher's fingernail shape was arched (not flat), so this innovative team developed finger braces to reshape them. Christopher wore these "braces" nightly for five years; finally he realized they would always return to their natural shape once the braces came off. So Christopher concentrated on learning to file his nails (an hourlong process) to make up for their arched natural form.

Fast forward several years, Christopher has now become a recognized artist and his life has changed dramatically. Still, between practicing, performing and cutting records, he somehow managed to develop another love of his life: fly-fishing. Betwixt and between his ever-increasing travel schedule, Christopher and his dad spent hours laboring over the lakebeds and finding blessed reprieve from the stressful world of concert performances. These true escapades are duly sandwiched between each chapter segmenting Christopher's life; though short and concise, they offer some entertaining "fish tales" and poignant life takes as well.

At the top of his game, Christopher finds himself increasingly dissatisfied with his life. Despite marriage, early "retirement" at age 30, and everything he could want materially, Christopher turns to Christ and makes a personal commitment following some difficult life events. The remainder of the text details how faith in God and living for His glory, not for personal gain or recognition, has altered Christopher's life for the good. Consistently honest and transparent, he challenges others to take stock of their souls and includes a hefty question/answer section at the close of the book.

Readers will enjoy this medium-paced storyline that contains an insider's view on the world of performing artists. Especially inviting is Christopher's ability to provide a realistic and unembellished, yet grateful, picture of a life charmed by success but relinquished to Christ.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Insightful.......2007-03-15

"Grace Like a River" is a fantastic look into the life and thoughts of the world's greatest living classical guitarist. Parkening shares the highs and lows of concert performances, especially the intense pressure and grind of a performing schedule. (I had the honor of meeting him following a concert in the 70's, and he was gracious and friendly even after a long performance.)

The book moves from his early career to his "retirement", and then to his calling to again perform and share his great faith with the world. In this he has branched out from "just" a guitarist to a versatile performer. Anyone who hears his incredible work with Kathleen Battle on "Pleasures of Their Company" will know what I mean, especially their rendition of six traditional spirituals.

Interestingly, Parkening also describes his love for fishing (he's a world-class, tournament-winning fisherman), and relates the life lessons learned from this easy-to-do, hard-to-master sport.

This book is a great read. Get it.

This was an enjoyable book to read, brought insight into the sacrifices necessary to become a virtuoso guitar player. It also has a few good tips on fly fishing!

5 out of 5 stars Parkening Book a Must Read.......2007-01-29

Christopher Parkening's new autobiography "Grace Like a River" is so good that I finished it in 2 days. Starting on a 100 dollar Goya guitar and working very hard as a boy he became one of the greatest guitarist alive. When he was 40 he retired, never to play again. God called him back to the guitar. Since then he's returned as a great concert guitarist and as a teacher at Pepperdine University. If you are a guitar player you should read this book!!! Bravo Chris

5 out of 5 stars Discipline, Dedication, Commitment.......2007-01-05

Over New Years I could not put the book down. Read it in several days. Greatness does not happen by accident. It does take work (for Parkening one and a half hours before school and after), dedication and commitment. Parkening would certainly say that we can all be used of God, no matter the extent of our natural abilities, if we put ourselves in His hands, go to work, depend on Him, and see where He takes us. What a great book for anyone (Elementary students even) who wants to excel.

The language and form of this searing book are as powerful as the life experience that inspired them. In a series of essays that cohere into a spiritual autobiography, the author writes prose that's deceptively simple yet rich in metaphor. An wild horse living in the parking lot of a Navajo school becomes a symbol for living creatures' intrinsic wildness, tamed only at a terrible cost. "We are all runaway horses" is one constant refrain, as is the reminder "you are your history." The author's history is painful: born in 1950 the son of an alcoholic Native American woman and a white cowboy father who "would sell my mom to other migrant men for five dollars," Nasdijj grew up a "mongrel" and an outcast, contending with his violent father's demons while his mother beguiled them with Indian stories. Living on a reservation, never fully accepted because of his white skin, he adopted a baby boy with fetal alcohol syndrome who died at age 6. The book's most beautiful passages meditate on Tommy Nothing Fancy's short life and express his father's love. Nasdijj has been homeless, he has taught Indian children on a reservation, he has retraced with a historian friend the dreadful forced march to Bosque Redondo, where the Navajo and their culture were nearly exterminated. These and many other ordeals are related in the agonizingly lucid words of someone who has turned to writing as a lifeline. This remarkable memoir has its share of bitterness and anger, but Nasdijj transcends both in his acceptance of the world that made him and in the knowledge that "the reservation runs like blood through a river of my dreams." --Wendy Smith

Book Description

A searing book as powerful as the life experience that inspired it, THE BLOOD RUNS LIKE A RIVER THROUGH MY DREAMS transports readers to the majestic landscapes and hard Native American lives of the desert Southwest. Born to a storytelling Native mother and a roughneck, song-singing father, Nasdijj has always lived at the jagged-edged margins of society, yet hardship and isolation have only brought him greater clarity -- a gift for language and a voice of searching honesty. "In a prose style that could almost be chanted" (New York Magazine), Nasdijj writes of his adopted son, Tommy Nothing Fancy, and of his own chaotic childhood; of his struggles between two cultures and his pursuit of the writing life -- as a lifeline. A powerful, unforgettable memoir, THE BLOOD RUNS LIKE A RIVER THROUGH MY DREAMS will "wash over readers and often take them by surprise" (Fort Worth Star-Telegram).

3 out of 5 stars I give this book three stars knowing it is a fraud.......2006-04-24

This book has to be the worst and most sickening case of cultural apropriation in the history of the US. The fact that it was writen by a white man is further proof of the emperialist and colonialist mentality that still exists in this nation twords the Native American Community. However when I forst read this book Nasdijj was still a navajo within the eyes of the public. At the time the book mooved me deaply. Nasdijj's use if diction and the storytelling nature of his narative was beutifle. It made me want to learn more about the status and problems facing the Plains Indian community and work bring about change. That meens somthing to me and despite what I know now that initial responce when I first read this book stays with me to this day. I urge those who are going to critisize this book to read it first if you have not, and when you read it, do so with eyes un clouded by the trouth.

1 out of 5 stars One Fraud Too Many.......2006-03-16

It's a shame that because of works like this, not to mention the Forrest Carter (Education of Little Tree) scandal a few years back, many unknown and undiscovered--but authentic--Native American writers will probably have to struggle that much harder to become published. Well-established American Indian authors are already naturally suspect of any newcomers on the scene; the sad fact is that for some reason Native American culture and identity is misappropriated by more misguided white writers--whatever their individual agendas might be--than any other race or ethnic group. The sad truth is that, for every Forrest Carter and Timothy Barris who manage to secure a publishing contract, there are dozens of truly deserving Native voices that are going unheard. And thanks to these imposters making the buying public- as well as agents and editors- increasingly suspicious of anyone claiming to be Native American-their chances to be read and heard are only going to diminish.

5 out of 5 stars The Joke.......2006-02-16

To hold the power to move people with words regardless of the validity of those words is a very impressive art. With the exception of one specific actor, no one in history has made a powerful film about his or her own life. There is no reason to believe that written works shoud be treated differently from movies in this respect. Obviously this writer has realized that human deception is an important method of eliciting an emotional response from an audience. By reading the responses from readers prior to the false exposure of the true writer, it is clear that this man or woman is light years ahead of current authors when it comes to manipulating the human brain into believing a story, factual or not. With the increasing pace of desensitization of the mind in recent years, obviously new techniques must be made available to entertain an insatiable public. To say that this author's amazing work is only confined within the pages of the book is downwright ludicrous. Everything, including the monikor and real identity of "Timothy Barris" is part of a larger piece of fiction that may be even further exposed as time passes. After this "identity" was unearthed, opposite and even stronger emotional responses were elicited from readers, demonstrated in print on these very pages of Amazon.com. Is it not true that disgust and outrage are also emotions that sub-par authors struggle to touch in their works? "The Blood Runs Like a River Through My Dreams" is such an example of a work of writing and deception that is capable of plucking each string of human emotion in such a way that has never been attempted before. There is a larger picture.

1 out of 5 stars A shameful fraud.......2006-01-28

I read this book last year, and was moved by it, though I often found it rather fuzzy on certain details, and the chronology seemed to jump around. Now, I learn this guy is a total FRAUD: He's not Indian and Tommy didn't exist. He's apparently lazy, too: I've read that his descriptions of Navajo culture don't fit with reality, either. This is disgraceful, both his lying about his heritage, and inventing this sick child, as well as the other people he made up. What a waste of time.
So many literary frauds have been exposed this month (Jan 06). Now, I'm wondering about a few other memoirs that have been popular the last few years. I'm rather disinclined to buy any memoirs these days; and I bet I'm not the only one who feels this way. I bet these scandals hurt sales of this book genre.

1 out of 5 stars plagiarist, Navajo wannabe, fake.......2006-01-28

I haven't read any of "Nasdijj"'s writings, and I don't expect to do so, but as a REAL Amerind (Cherokee), I am disturbed and indignant at Navajos being used as a publicity hook by a white sado-masochist. Don't take my word for it. Read an exhaustive exposé at

    Book Description

When her father dies and leaves her to decide the fate of the family farm, Jane Brox wonders how family identity--language, food, a grandfather's wish for "five thousand days like this one"--can endure when so few traces of former lives are left. With a poet's eye and a historian's hunger, she is driven to search out her family's past in the fascinating and quintessentially American history of the Merrimack Valley, its farmers, and the immigrant workers caught up in the industrial textile age.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Uneven, but interesting account.......2000-07-04

I vascillated between really loving parts of this book, and being annoyed at others. The book discusses the history of the Merrimack Valley in northeastern Massachusetts, weaving in stories about the author's parents' lives there as immigrants from Italy and Lebanon. It also compares descriptions of the area written by Thoreau, and others, in the 19th century.

While most of it was fascinating, some aspects of the book bothered me. First, as the book progresses, it becomes evident that it is a collection of prior essays; some portions are repetitive, almost down to the exact language. Second, I felt that the author was trying too hard to be "lyrical." Some of the writing seemed "forced," convoluted, and grammatically awkward, to the point that I had to reread sentences to figure out what she wanted to say.

Despite these criticisms, it is an interesting read about an area that has changed so much over the last 150 years.

5 out of 5 stars This is an incredibly powerful and exquisitely written book........1999-03-24

Jane Brox's second book is masterful: a cross between social history and memoir, a book that is devastatingly clear about the future of the family farm and yet without a trace of rancor. Even if, like me, you're a city person, you should READ THIS BOOK for its pervasive, gentle wisdom; for its stunning prose; for everything a book should offer to its reader--access to a beloved world.

For those of you who have read the first edition of "Like A River Glorious" I would like to let you know of this book.... Lawana rewrote her first edition and this version is much better than the one before. So if you didn't enjoy the first edition you might want to try this new edition. I connected much better with the characters especially with Corrine Hammond. Rachel Jones is a lovely young maid caught in a desperation situation. She is an unwilling partner in an evil intrigue of extortion and blackmail with her employers Gerald Moore and Corrine Hammond. Though she would like very much to leave this household, the fear of being arrested along with her employers held her captive. Then Rachel meets the latest victim Lord Adam Burke who has secluded himself after his war injuries and his fiancee's rejection. Will Rachel escape the vile plot and from Gerald Moore's unsavoury lust? Or will she sacrifice her life in order to save Adam? I am very pleased that Lawana has re-written the book and I'm so looking forward to her new contemporary murder-mystery "A Table by the Window" which will be released next April. I can hardly wait! Please keep up the good work Lawana!

As far as I know this is Lawana Blackwell's first novel. She does a pretty good job. This first book tends to lean towards the stereotypical romance novel, though. The characters follow the usual pattern for romance novels. The character development is low. But luckily, Lawana Blackwell gets better with each novel she writes. I particularly like her Gresham Series. Good work, Lawana.

Rachel is a wonderful charactor. She doesn't like what she's doing and she was told that if she doesn't do what Gerald or Corrine say they would put her in jail. Gerald and Corrine were con artists who prey among the rich people and by Corrine's lies they extort money from rich people. Then they met Adam with scars from his days as a British soldier. Rachel and Adam fall in love and there is a great ending. You have to read this one

4 out of 5 stars This is a great book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-08-31

Rachel, Corrine, and Adam are great charctors! I like Rachel because she was loyal to her friends. I like Adam because he has a stong faith in God. I like Corrine because she realizes her mistakes and accepted God in her life. Way to go Lawana

      Book Description

hought by many Syrians to be the most influential novel of its time, this first novel of Muhammad Kamil al-Khatib is a riveting examination of Syrian political and social life during the 1980s. With a multi-voiced narration carried, like a river, from one voice to another, al-Khatib paints concise, vivid portraits of a disparate group of people in Damascus, ranging from an older officer in the Syrian army, to a university student coming to terms with her sexuality in a traditional context, to a British Orientalist on sabbatical, to a disillusioned activist who must reconcile his ideals with the realities of war and city life. Though the particularities of the explored lives may be quintessentially Syrian, the struggle between the generations, between men and women, between country and city, and between victor and vanquished are international in scope.

4 out of 5 stars Another Lost Generation?.......2004-07-01

Originally published some twenty years ago, this touchstone of modern Syrian literature became popular for its articulation of frustrations in Syrian society. The author is a member of the so-called "Sixties Generation", whose attitudes were formed during the rise of Arab nationalism and socialism, and twenty years later found most of their heady idealism unrealized. The novella's themes are applicable to many Third World countries where traditional values are in transition, and the optimism of the post-colonial era has given way to resignation to the stifling rule of military autocrats. Migration is one such theme, as those of the '60s generation moved from the village to the city in search of opportunity. This echoed more problematically in the '80s, as the next generation looks to move overseas for opportunity. This is linked to another theme, the increase in education coupled with the lack of opportunities for the newly educated.

Set in the early 1980sówhen threat of war with Israel loomed large in day-to-day lifeóthe story is told in a social-realist style, in which a different character is followed in each chapter. The core of the book is Chief Sergeant Yunis, a father of four whose family becomes emblematic of Syrian society. His career in the army has created a fairly comfortable middle-class life for his children. The eldest son has been studying medicine in Russia for years, and Yunis longs for him to return to the family's bosom. As in many traditional societies, the parents' most fervent hopes are lodged in the eldest son, who is expected to provide comfort and support in the parents' old age. But since this son is absent, Yunis projects some of these hopes onto his daughter Dallal and the dream of living as a large family back in his ancestral village. However, Dallal has been raised to be a modern, progressive, college-educated woman, and is struggling with what that means in terms of sexuality and personal freedom. She is at college, and is ostensibly being raised as a progressive woman, and yet when push comes to shove, her parents revert to traditional paradigms of the role of a daughter. The middle son is an aimless youth who dropped out of school and joined the army, and the youngest is still a child.

Next to Yunis, the most important character is Yusef, a respectable teacher in a small town who is courting Dallal. He is who visits Damascus frequently and stays with his friend Zuhayr, an activist turned journalist. The two of them are well-educated semi-intellectuals who feel trapped in the provincialism of life in Asad's Syria. Their cafÈ conversations and late-night ambling around to movie houses and bookstores reflect this alienation while bringing the city to life. Yusef's ambivalence with life is reflected in his awkward courtship of Dallal, which lurches fitfully along to its inevitable end. These are modern people, but they're not sure how to become modern lovers. Ultimately, the book is about them, and seems to be foretell another lost generation.

      Book Description

Throughout the history of the African American people there has been no stronger resource for overcoming adversity than the black church. From its role in leading a group of free Blacks to form a colony in Sierra Leone in the 1790s to helping ex-slaves after the Civil War, and from playing major roles in the Civil Rights Movement to offering community outreach programs in American cities today, black churches have been the focal point of social change in their communities. Based on extensive research over several years, Mighty Like a River is the first comprehensive account of how black churches have helped shape American society. An expert in African American culture, Andrew Billingsley surveys nearly a thousand black churches across the country, including its oldest, the First African Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia. These black churches, whose roots extend back to antebellum times, have periodically confronted social, economic, and political problems facing the African American community. Mighty Like a River addresses such questions as: How widespread and effective is the community activity of black churches? What are the patterns of activities being undertaken today? How do activist churches confront such problems as family instability, youth development, AIDS and other health issues, and care for the elderly? With profiles of the remarkable black heroes and heroines who helped create the activist church, and a compelling agenda for expanding the black church's role in society at large, Mighty Like a River is an inspirational, visionary, and definitive account of the subject.

4 out of 5 stars A good outline of Black church history.......2004-12-15

This is a good foundation. Since the first slave ship arrived to the USA, we have been active in our liberation. As to the previous reviewer "a reader". It always amazes me how muslims can put down Christianity when they do NOTHING in our communities but talk tough. Please read YOUR history and learn that when the europeans came to power they used the slave routes of muslims who were the first to enslave continental africans(which still goes on! BTW, the koran is an edited book that has been rewritten several times. At least read your own history before speaking on others. PEACE

      5 out of 5 stars Fine scholarship.......2000-11-17

This certainly rates more than the single star given by another reviewer. Billingsley's book is a fine work of scholarship!

1 out of 5 stars I am Actually a muslim and I want to give my opinion.......1999-08-28

I would like to say something about christianity. For centuries white christians have surpressed and enslaved other races or religions. Why would I want to convert myself to a religion that didn't even have laws that inspired people from all races and beliefs to live in harmony and friendship. One advice.Read de koran:You won't be disappointed About the book then.Does the author even now that the Bible during the roman occupation was forged(just like the juish book the thora)
