Must-Have Resource.......2007-10-03
Dr. Shaywitz provides so much information that you won't want to just check this one out from the library--you'll want it for your bookshelf. It will be a well-used resource for many years!
Overcoming dyslexia requires a structured program..........2007-09-30
...because, as the author asserts, dyslexia does not remit spontaneously. That is, once you have it, it is yours, more or less, for life.
This assertion holds true only if dyslexic children do not receive a structured reading-phonics program, such as the one offered by Kumon centers across North America. (BTW, Kumon instructors never refer to "learning disability" or "dyslexia," but instead, to "struggling readers.") This program is one of daily practice for about 20 minutes, and has embedded the three components of successful anti-dyslexia programs: practice, sight vocabulary, and phonics/phonemic awareness.
Curiously, Dr. Shaywitz mentions U. of Oregon DIEBELS programs, but is not acquainted with Kumon, which has an equally broad reach across the country.
A Must Read for Parents, Educators and Rdg Teachers! .......2007-09-27
This was an amazing book. There IS hope if you or someone you know is dyslexic! This is an encouraging book that empowers you to take charge and help your child, student, yourself... become a stronger reader!
Dispells many myths about dyslexia and what it is.
Focuses on strategies and curriculum based on strong research.
Describes how the brain works when it comes to language... and how brain scans have shown "improvement" in areas of the brain (left lobes) that have been activated after effective reading strategies and programs have been implemented.
It is filled with lots and lots of specific, practical ideas, resources and information about how readers learn to read and how we can help children (and adults) who have difficulty reading. Although the title refers to dyslexia, it is a great book if you want to understand how the reading process works and what you can do as a parent/teacher/caregiver to help your child overcome dyslexia,to solidify your child's reading skills if they don't have dyslexia, or to get them off to a great start reading in the early years. There are also specific descriptions of which signs to look for EARLY ON to detect any reading difficulties or dyslexia and address them then.
I used many of the ideas in the text with my own daughter who is learning to read... and also with a few students I've worked with who struggle with reading. I was surprised to find that many of the descriptions in the book, of the kinds of errors that children with reading difficulties or dyslexia make, exactly described some of the things I was seeing with the children I worked with.
This is a book I borrowed from the library first, then knew, without a doubt, I had to buy and have for a reference again and again!
Great book explaining dyslexia.......2007-08-14
This is a wonderfully written book on dyslexia. I have read several and this is by far my favorite! I would highly recommend this book for those who are looking for some great information on this learning disability.
This is a Must for any parent who has a Dyslexic child!.......2007-07-15
This book was the most complete book I have ever found on the subject of Dyslexia. It was very enlightening for me as the mom of 3 Dyslexic children to understand the scientific facts as well as be given an abundance of helpful strategies in dealing with the learning difficulties for Dyslexic people. A true MUST HAVE for anyone searching for help in understanding Dyslexia.

Book Description
Los Angeles is a place of movie stars and fast cars and people who are too rich and people who are too poor. An area of freeway chases and drive-bys and death. But there's another L.A., one where warmth and humor and humanity pervade. Where a tacqueria sign declares: "One cause, one people, one taco." This L.A. is a place where random acts of generosity and goodwill improve the lives of the community. Any Small Goodness is a novel filled with hope, love, and warmth.

Beware: If you read this book you will die from how amazing it is!.......2007-03-26
Beware: If you read this book you will die from how amazing it is. It has a message that is important and it stops teenagers or anybody from doing improper things. Any Small Goodness comes to mind when you are going to be violent and it reminds you of the most important things in your life. Any Small Goodness has a glossary that helps you with the Spanish words used throughout the story. This story has an amazing family and it has lots of action in the story to keep you interested. We give this story a star rating of four. Our opinion is that the author, Tony Johnston, should have limited the amount of time spent discussing Gangs because it is frightening at times. Also, the author needs to spend more time discussing the kindness shown in the barrio. The author has wonderful ideas. He teaches a lesson which is we should share more.
Pretty Good Book.......2005-11-24
The reviews on the inside cover of this book describe Arturo, the protagonist, as `a Latino Holden Caulfield'. Well, no.
After reading a few Hispanic American novels, I am beginning to see some similarities. They have all been family based, family oriented. They each include a glossary to help readers with the Spanish words and phrases sprinkled throughout the text. They are life affirming and tell an uplifting tale.
Any Small Goodness runs along the same lines. The title comes from what Arturo's father tells him: "In life there is bueno and there is malo. If you do not find enough of the good, you must yourself create it ... Remember this thing - any small goodness is of value."
To this end, Arturo and his friends form the Green Needle gang. In the Los Angeles barrio that is their home, they must deal with real street gangs. But the Green Needle gang sneaks up to people's houses and leave Christmas trees and gifts on the porch. This is only one of the ways they concoct to make their lives and neighborhood better.
Arturo and his friends resist their teacher's efforts to Americanize their names (Arturo, Jaime, Alicia, Raul become Arthur, James, Alice, and Ralph, but only briefly). They are proud of their Hispanic heritage and look to Arturo's grandmother as a touchstone to the traditional ways. She cooks Mexican food, uses old time utensils, and speaks Spanish. Arturo is both proud of his grandmother and embarrassed by her - in the fashion of all teens. But they are Americans, after all, and participate in all that is American. Some of the characters that walk on are an ex-NBA player who volunteers to coach at their school, a media specialist with a flair for choosing the perfect book, and a do-gooder piano teacher who keeps candy atop the piano to stave off sinking spells.
While this is a worthwhile and enjoyable book, each chapter is a little story unto itself. There is not as much continuity of story as in an ordinary book. Some of the story does spill over into the culminating formation of the Green Needle gang at the end, thus bringing the message home.
Touching, Quick Read.......2005-10-18
Overall, a very touching story about Arturo and his familia y amigos (family and friends) and even a few malditos (bad guys). Arturo learns that, "any small goodness is of value."
While this book focuses on a Mexican family, it may also reach children of non-Anglo descent, particularly first generation students.
Any Small Goodness.......2004-12-04
Arturo's family has emigrated from Mexico to East L.A. The teacher at his new school wants to change the kid's names to their American counterparts. Arturo's story reveals the need to adjust and assimilate to a new, sub-culture while retaining the need to maintain integral parts of his own culture. For many, family love and values aren't enough to keep you from the outside influences that can lead you down the wrong road. How do Arturo and his amigos maintain orgullo? This is a great book to open the doors to understanding the unfamiliar characteristics that lie within Mexican culture for school children that are subject to this integration. At the same time the book will offer a sense of pride within their Mexican culture.
Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down.......2004-03-26
In the book Any Small Goodness, the characater Arturo gets a thumbs up. He lives in L.A. in a place where random acts of generosity and good will improve the lives of L.A. There is also another L.A. , a place of movie stars and people who are too rich and people who are too poor. But Arturo manages to survive. We like Arturo because he is a good friend that could also make him a good person. He never talks down to his friends or talks behind their backs. We also like him because he's a growing kid- just like us. Another reason is he thinks about what will happen next, the reason he has so many friends is because knows he would lose them if he talked bad about them. We make good and bad desisions just like him. We think other kids should read this book because it explains a lot about growing up.
Book Description
Since he retired from baseball in 2001, Cal Ripken, Jr., has devoted his time to coaching kids, including his own son and daughter, who play baseball and basketball, among other sports. With a baseball league of nearly 700,000 kids, ages 5-12, named for him, he has also had a chance to meet and work with countless young athletes. Cal Ripken's simple yet effective philosophy for helping kids get the most out of playing sports is to keep it simple, explain the why, celebrate the individual, and make it fun! But Ripken is troubled by what he sees in youth sports: a competitive intensity that removes the element of fun from playing. Now, drawing on his experiences as a father, a player, and a coach to his charges at his youth baseball based organization, Ripken Baseball, the legend offers his insights and advice on how to approach organized sports with your kids to ensure they have the best experience possible, stay fit, and enjoy themselves.
Whether you were a star player or a kid who never learned to throw, this book will tell you everything you need to know about sports parenting from the pre-school years to middle school. It covers all the bases, including:
* Teaching the basics of sportsmanship
* How an overemphasis on technique or winning can harm your child's game
* How to develop a good relationship with your child's coach
* The pros and cons of travel teams and club teams
* The importance of returning the games to the kids and how best to behave as a parent
* The latest on performance and nutrition
* Fun games and exercises to do with your kids to encourage them
* Why most kids burn out on team sports by middle school and how to avoid it
Few athletes embody sportsmanship and fair play as perfectly as Cal Ripken. His advice will inspire confidence in kids and parents alike.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Book For Any Parent Of A Young Athlete.......2007-04-21
I thought this book was excellent. It made a lot of references to baseball but it can be applied to any sport. He does mention other sports and uses examples with them. This book is great for any parent that has a child in sports. It covers, the basics of sportsmanship and how an overemphasis on technique or winning can harm your child. It also covers how to develop a good relationship with your child's coach and why most kids burn out on team sports by middle school and how to avoid it. My 2 daughters swim on a swim team and one of them also plays soccer. I found myself thinking of myself in many of the examples and also of the other parents that I know on our team. I think it is a good down to earth book and it gives a lot of helpful advice on how to deal with various things that come up when your children play sports. I think it should be required for any parent that has a child in youth sports.
Classy Guy with Wholesome Advice.......2007-01-09
What can one say, advice by Ripken is as good as it gets. If you want to keep athletics a positive experience for you and your kids, the Ripken Way is the way to do it. Great guide for parents, school athletic departments, and all those coaches who sometimes need to be reminded about what sports is all about...good experiences for kids! Extremely readable.
Another Hit for Cal Ripken Jr........2006-07-21
Great book for parents with kids involved with sports. Very sensible advice. Ripken shares experiences he had with his own children.
A grand slam for youth sports!!!.......2006-05-02
I have been honored to have coached youth sports for sixteen seasons. I've often struggled with what is best for the kids in the long run against a parent's internal drive for competition, and to win. This book should nearly be a mandate for every parent in this country who has kids playing sports. Cal, along with Rick Wolff, who is Chairman of the Center for Sports Parenting, have created an outstanding book that covers all the bases about child development, skill development, and long-term success. In a society where news is filled with overzealous, and even violent parents in kids sports, this book offers the cure. It even provides the secret to creating long-term athletic success (and it is not what most parents think it is).
The book is full of practical advice about how to broaden athletic skills and deal with the developmental and emotional challenges kids face when playing organized youth sports (how we wish for the sandlots of yesteryear). In fact, when my seven-year-old son got out at a play at second, and couldn't control his emotions, I found myself driving home frantically just to reread the chapter on "dealing with disappointment", so I could help him through it.
When I was a kid, I didn't have fun, wasn't given a chance, and I was one of the millions of kids in this country that stopped playing sports. Cal and Rick are right on target about what to do to keep kids playing. The messages in this can create happier kids, happier fields, less-stressed parents, and in the long run, more kids that choose to play sports for a lifetime (and do them well).
Book Description
In his most powerful book since What’s So Amazing About Grace? and The Jesus I Never Knew, Philip Yancey now takes a classic look at a classic subject. Prayer: Does It Make a Difference? is an honest, thought-provoking, and non-conventional treatment of one of the Christian’s most important—and confusing—topics.
Customer Reviews:
Prayer Does It Make Any Difference?.......2007-09-26
This book should be interesting both to secularists and people of faith. The author's use of epigraphs provide launching points for thoughtful people of all backgrounds.
Honest, inspiring book on prayer.......2007-09-15
Philip Yancey has done it again. His book "The Jesus I Never Knew" is the best book I have read on Jesus. His book, "What's So Amazing About Grace?" is the best book I have read about grace. Now his book, "Prayer: Does it make any difference?" is the best book I have read on prayer. That is a strong statement for me to make, even as a person who loves the writings of Philip Yancey. I have read dozens of great books on prayer, including great books by people like Richard Foster, Ole Hallesby, Bill Hybels and Oswald Chambers.
What sets Yancey's book apart is his brutal honesty about the struggles people have with prayer, balanced with inspiring stories of how prayer has changed people's lives. Yancey is particularly self-effacing about his own struggles with prayer and his feelings of inadequacy in failing to pray. Yet by the end of the book, it is apparent that Yancey is much more of a prayer warrior than he admits at first.
The books' 22 chapters are divided into five parts. Part One, "Keeping Company with God," explores what prayer is. He points out that Jesus "virtually invented private prayer" (p. 63).
Part Two, "Unraveling the Mysteries," discusses frustrations and questions that people have about the effectiveness of prayer. He gives a disarmingly profound answer to those who ask why we should bother to pray when some prayers seem unanswered: "Why pray? Because Jesus did" (p. 78). Later in the book he gives another simple but true answer: "Why pray? God likes to be asked" (p. 143).
Part Three, "The Language of Prayer," discusses how to pray. He gives great practical advice on handling distractions to prayer, and reminds the reader that there is no right way to pray, because different styles of prayer fit different personalities. "Keep it simple, keep it honest, and keep it up" he advises (p. 191).
Part Four, "Prayer Dilemmas," returns to questions people have about prayer, especially unanswered prayer. I would disagree slightly with his defintion of "unanswered prayer," as he includes in that definition prayers that receive a "no" answer. Yancey's approach to prayer for physical healing is balanced and insightful, as he reveals scientific research showing healing that cannot be explained, while recognizing the importance of using medicine and how God usually works through natural processes.
Part Five, "The Practice of Prayer," provides motivation for faithful praying.
Yancey's writing includes frequent illustrations from a variety of sources, from popular culture to literature to world history. Being a famous author and editor for Christianity Today, Yancey has received many letters about prayer, and he shares this correspondence throughout the book. One unique quality about this book is that each chapter includes a couple of sidebars written by others, sharing personal experiences in prayer. For example, on p. 224-225 a prostitute whose prayer for deliverence resulted in her miraculous salvation. Although each sidebar story can be read alone, they relate to the chapters where they are inserted.
I disagree with Yancey in chapter 7, when he discusses Abraham's prayer that "changed" God's mind. Yancey does not notice that Genesis 18:33 says that it is God who ended the conversation with Abraham, not Abraham with God, so God did not change His mind.
Also, I believe that Yancey misinterprets Job 21:15 on p. 95. There he says that Job asks "What would we gain by praying to him?" However, the context of the chapter implies that Job quotes the wicked in this passage; Job does not say that he himself questions prayer.
It is remarkable that these were the only two places that I disagreed with Yancey, because he makes bold and strong statements throughout the book. I am sure many people will be offended or disagree with some things he said, just because he asserts so many strong opinions. But this is one of the values of the book: Yancey stimulates you to think deeply about prayer, and challenges your preconceived notions. Yet he does so while remaining fiercely loyal to the Bible's teachings on prayer.
In summary, this book is destined to be a classic book on prayer, useful for group study or personal review and study over and over again.
The Stuff No One Talks About.......2007-09-13
Philip Yancey has an uncanny way of addressing taboo subjects within the world of religion. His candid approach to the subject of prayer is refreshing and void of cliche's intended to manipulate or give a false sense of security. He reveals the true power of prayer, AND more importantly, the misconceptions about prayer. His book will take its reader on a round-trip journey of belief, doubt, and belief again with only one difference: the return of belief will be a more stable and deeply-rooted belief that will not be easily shaken.
What? Only four stars for a Philip Yancey book?.......2007-09-11
"Prayer -- Does it Make Any Differnce?"
For an avid and respectful Philip Yancey fan like myself, it is embarrassing to withold a full five stars. But my one reservation is a very serious one. Would it be fair to describe Yancey's position as "it is good to pray constantly, but don't expect a specific tangible answer to a personal prayer"?
In a book that addresses the question of whether prayer makes any difference it is a serious oversight not to investigate and report on ministries where it demonstatedly does make a differnce, such as the MacNutt's in Jacksonville. These mild-mannered, well educated, and considerate people of integrity do not claim healings that didn't happen, and have kept careful records of their years of experience. Has Yancey seriously studied their ministry with an open mind? Is he willing to sit down to talk with them? Or does he cling to the devastating 19th century nonscriptural doctrine that "miracles are not for today"?
A controlled experiment, published in December 2000, compared the effect of prayer on three groups with the same terminal illness: by trained, hands-on believers (James 5:14,15) by distant intercessors, and a control group is significant.
A test should be patterned after the way God actually heals today rather than one that tells God what he must do to convince us.
A book on Prayer certainly is should include exploring the effect of praying the kind of healing taught by Jesus and practiced by his disciples. See where it is working, not where we've failed.
Respectfully sharing. RHP
Talks too Fast.......2007-09-09
I bought Mr. Yancey's hard copy book "Prayer" and I realized that it was a spectacular book with so much information that it was going to be hard to retain a lot of it. When this happens and I really want to learn from a book, I will purchase the book on tape to be able to listen to it and absorb the information. That was my goal with purchasing the audio version of this book. My criticism is this: The gentleman narrating talks far too fast. I'm from a large urban city and have been told that I can talk rather fast -- and I'm saying this guy talks too fast! Perhaps it wouldn't annoy anyone else -- I am trying to absorb information from this book and a more thoughtful slow read would have been beneficial to me. Perhaps it won't be an issue with anyone else. And I have absolutely no complaints about the content as the book is excellent. Just know that the audioversion moves along at quite a brisk clip!
Book Description
Patricia Roush's girls were kidnapped more than 16 years ago and taken by their Saudi father, who they hardly knew, to the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. They were three and seven at the time. At Any Price is the story of her fight to get them back from a father with a documented history of severe mental illnesses and violent tendencies. In the midst of this tragic set of circumstances was a bigger problem-an ongoing, demoralizing struggle with the U.S. government and the Saudi kingdom to reunite her with her children.
At Any Price reveals the desperate and risky attempts for rescue that slip again and again from Patricia's grasp. This personal story of bravery, courage, and faith will warm and inspire readers.
Customer Reviews:
Not the best out there.......2004-07-13
I have read many books on the Middle East. Some of which relate to this issue. This book is by far the worst I have ever read. It was long and boring. I had to skip many parts just to get through the book. This was such an important issue. She should have written it differently. I would not recommend this book to anyone.
This is a fascinating book, written by a woman of true grit.......2004-03-17
I am amazed at the misfortunes this valiant woman and her family have gone through. The author gives details of American greed for oil, leading to the unwillingness of our government to stand up for the rights of American citizens. And throughout the book, Ms. Roush is very honest, and shows great insight into herself, and both Saudi Arabia and America.
Pat Roush is an inspiring role model who has shown steadfastness and determination through troubles that would have crushed a lesser person.
This book is one I'm always going to keep on my bookshelves.
At Any Price.......2004-03-01
Upon finishing this totalling enralling and very well written book I am amazed at the courage, bravery and endurance this woman has had to sustain for nearly two decades. Not only has she devoted her life to freeing her innocent daughters from the totalitarian clutches of a Stalinistic regime like Saudi Arabia, had to fight her own government who obviously worked as 'Saudi agents' and compromised her and her daughters in every way but has helped so very many others in similar situations.
Ms. Roush keeps the reader on the 'edge of your seat' as she wages her Joan of Arc battles all alone amidst insurmountable government betrayal and abuse. What she has done for this issue of human rights for women and children caught inside Saudi Arabia not to mention her tireless work as a pioneer in international child abduction is truly astounding. Her work with legislation, media, the U.S. Congress and the United Nations not to mention all the personal time and expense she has given to those in need is an inspiration to me.
I found this book to be a special gift to America - to us all; it is exactly what is needed in these days of government deception and the focus on the Middle East. Her story of love, hope and faith should be on everyone's reading list.
Book written at the expense and loss of others.......2004-02-01
Too bad that Ms. Roush has only learned to walk all over those who have done all they could to help both she and her daughters over the years, and for what, monetary gain? She certainly does not take one step towards helping the thousands of parents who also have abducted children currently.
No, she steals a photograph for the cover taken by a disabled woman without her permission, compensation, or even photographic credit. No credit or name given to the other parents, online individuals and song artists for all the hard work they have contributed through the years, without even a "thank you" from this woman. Unknown little people who were trampled. Even the song writers Doug DeForest and Craig Deanto, used for her book and not mentioned by name.
Some of these people still write her and other parents, even though they are suffering with MS and other illnesses. She deletes their mail and treats them like dirt. One of the people in the photo she used without permission should not be on the cover of a book about missing children! They are a known and convicted stalker. What a nightmare this woman is. With her hatred she seems to have forgotten all of the people who lended their shoulders, money and more in her times of need.
Do not give this woman any more money, please. Go find a children's organization who really helps and give them the donation.
Shame on our government!.......2003-06-28
As an American who lived in Saudi Arabia for many years, it quickly became clear that the American Embassy would be the last place I would go should I need assistance. In Saudi Arabia, it appeared that our government representatives only cared about the feelings of the Saudi government, and couldn't have cared less about American citizens. This was very troubling to me then, and extremely upsetting to me now. Pat Roush's book reminded me again of the shameful behavior of America's state department. Her case was not a question of a marital dispute or even child custody, it was a case of kidnapping! I am incensed that former Ambassadors end up on the Saudi payroll. Frankly, I believe it should be forbidden for any former American government official to accept jobs or money from the Saudis, or from any other foreign government. Why is this not a criminal offense?
I think Pat Roush is remarkable. She has never stopped fighting for her children, against all odds. Her book is very readable, although your heart aches for her, and for her two children who never had the opportunity to grow up with their loving mother.
I just wish there was something I could do to right this situation, but only our government can make a difference. Every American should be INCENSED that our own government refuses to help these mothers--actually, the state department works AGAINST these American mothers!
I applaud Pat Roush and pray that one day, she'll have her two American daughters and their children back where they belong, in America. And, I hope that every American who has worked on behalf of the Saudis to hurt these mothers, will one day understand the terrible hurt and harm they have caused...

The show features the voices of many celebrities, including; Walter Cronkite as Ben Franklin, Billy Crystal as John Adams, Whoopi Goldberg as Deborah Sampson, Annette Bening as Abigail Adams, and Aaron Carter performing the title song.
Patrick Henry's speech: "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death." Paul Revere's midnight ride. The shot heard round the world. The Revolutionary War begins.
James, Sarah, Henri, and Moses travel to Virginia, where they witness Patrick Henry's speech. Moses meets up with his past and must make a tough decision. The next month Sarah and James go to Boston to report on Paul Revere's ride. As their fight for liberty and freedom continues, they find themselves at the Concord Bridge when the shot heard round the world is fired. What does this all mean? What sacrifices will be made? For those who read Justice For All, heres the sequel.......2004-04-29
This is the sequel to 'Justice For All' and is the 2nd book in the L.K. series. Now I will review it for you.(Its about 3 episodes)
Liberty Or Death!-When their printing press breaks, theyre in luck when Moses says he made an offer on a new one. The problem? They just have to travel to Williamsburg, V.A. to pick it up. So its off to Virginia! Upon their arrival, they witness a slave auction. James and Henri hear Patrick Henrys gonna do a speech at the House of Burgesses, so they go there, while Sarah and Moses get the press. But to their surprise, no ones there! Just two slave women who tell them that the Earl of Dunmore(or something) shut it down. So they find out that instead, Mr. Henry will make his speech at St. Johns church in Richmond. When everybody gets back and are ready to go, Moses sees his younger brother at the slave auction. He is sold to Richmond, at the Abernathy Plantation. So they decide to go to Richmond too. But its very dangerous for Moses to be in the south, where slavery thrives. Can they get Cato(his brother) and also return safely to Philadelphia AND hear his speech?
Midnight Ride of Paul Revere-James and Sarah are on their way to Boston to deliver a message to a friend of Dr.Franklins about the British after they accidentally injure Moses when they thought he was a burglar. They go by way of ship, a small, small boat, and a british frigiate forces them to land about 8 miles south of their destination. They have one occurance which leads them to the truth-the british ARENT leaving boston. So now they must hurry! When they DO tell Dr. Warren(the friend), he gets William DAwes and Paul Revere to go riding at midnight. James and Sarah get involved too, but do they really know what they are getting themselves into?
Shot Heard Round the World-After staying at this hotel-place, James and Sarah are exhausted from their ride. Sarah, upon knowing her cousin Tom is stationed with the british nearby, goes out to look for him. James stays behind and goes with the americans. But when they cross paths again and the first shot is fired, its become clear that this is war. And when they meet again at the bridge at Lexington and Concord, the first harsh fighting begins. Sarah loses Tom, and James and Sarah become a little closer, in my view. IN other views, Dr. Franklin returns from London with a new view of England.

fantastic resource for every parent - Five stars.......2007-04-15
My daughter loves reading and reads everything, including small print on cereal boxes, so recently I had to deal with an issue of trying to help her go through the ocean of books and find the best ones.
This book is so far the best guide I found, very well organized - by age group, genre and subject; it includes short synopsys for each book, notes to parents and further reading recommendations. I am glad I found it and I would recommend it to every parent - whether their kids love the books or love to hate them.
Daughter now "thinks" she likes reading.......2007-03-27
My 10 year old daughter "thinks" she hates to read. She has read several of the suggested books & has loved them. Her school requires her to read so many books, of her choice, every grading period. Before receiving this book, she would start reading a book & then stop saying that the book was boring. This is a must-get for any child who "thinks" they hate to read
I Don't Hate to Read, But this Book Rocks!!.......2003-02-10
When I first saw this book, I just knew I would love it. I am a HUGE reader, and there's no way I hate to read. But I liked this book anyway. You will find 125 books in here, which will appeal to reluctant readers. I've read several of the books featured in this book, and I've thoroughly enjoyed every single one of them. There are several parts to the book: books for 5-8 years old, books for 7-10 years old, books for 8-12 years old, and books for ages 10 and up. Each book featured has a picture, an exerpt from the book, a summery of the book, reasons why the book would appeal to reluctant readers, who might like it, types of illustrations, and so much more. There are even more reccomended books in the back. This is truly a fantastic resource, whethere you hate to read or not.

Book Description
How can Nick believe his mother's telling him there aren't any monsters when she forgets what his favorite flavor of ice cream is? Or when she makes him wear boots and it doesn't even rain?
Well, sometimes Mamas do make mistakes...but sometimes they don't.
Judith Viorst's appealing text combines with Kay Chorao's wickedly evocative drawings in this all-new edition of a favorite book.

Zombies and ghosts.......2006-07-18
Very interesting book. All my kids (6, 4 and 3) love it for the ghosts and monsters, although I think the book is a bit too difficult and long for the 2 younger ones to follow. All the same, they like to hear about Monsters - again and again. Yet, at the end of every reading they will ask "so are there monsters?" and "did you also make a mistake about monsters, mummy?".
Fearless Female Brought Up With This Book.......2004-05-14
This was my FAVORITE book when I was little. The monsters did creep into my dreams, but the theme of the book is that Mom, though she did sometimes make mistakes, was the strongest around. I mean, heck, she could scare away monsters!
I still to this day admire my mom's strength that I began to imitate since this book showed me that women, even single mamas who aren't always perfect, can be fearless and strong! I would never have done all of the good things in my life if I hadn't stood up to the 'monsters' of the world. College, travel and love are all scary things to enter, but SO worth the effort and THAT is what this book is about to me!
Thanks Mom.
Love Kassimo.
Would give zero stars if that were an option!.......2003-07-10
I bought this book after reading the good comments of other reviewers, but find I completely wasted my money since I immediately donated it to charity without ever letting my kids see it. I am pretty liberal about what they read----"My Monster Mama loves me so" and "Frank was a Monster (who wanted to dance)" are their FAVORITE books---but this book is plain scary, not humorous or comforting. I bought this for my fearful 5-year-old (to try to help quell her fear of the dark) but this book would give even my eight-year-old nightmares, though my 10-year-old would probably find it amusing. I agree with the reviewer who said that mom is made to look like a bit of a dolt, right up until the very last (and somewhat confusing) page. If your kids weren't scared of the dark before reading this, it will give them plenty of new monsters to worry about. Skip this book and instead go for "No Such Thing".
Great Kid's Book.......2002-08-22
Sure, some of the illustrations scared me as a kid, but I loved it all the same. I used to beg my mom to read it to me all the time. Sadly, I got rid of it a while ago, and pretty soon I missed it dearly. I bought a new copy of it just today and couldn't be happier. I'm so glad to have found it still in print. This book is indespensible, no matter what...
I LOVE THIS BOOOK!.......2001-08-10
This book was one of my all time favorites...I could not remember the name of it only that moms arent always right...and the imagery has stayed with me for some 20 years!

Holidays, birthdays -- whatever the reason you decide to whoop it up, there's a palooza for it!
John Lithgow -- star of stage, screen, and television and bestselling children's book author -- has spent years perfecting the art of the palooza. A palooza is an invitation to a creative adventure, a jumping-off point for making your own fun. All twelve months of the year are loaded with opportunities to palooza. Sure, you can celebrate all the familiar holidays and birthdays the way you always have. Or you can turn those days -- and every other day -- into something special: a real wingding of a palooza!
This book is packed with fifty-two of John's easy and original celebrations for kids ages three through twelve. Each palooza costs little to nothing, and if you learn a little about art or music or food or philosophy along the way, hey, who's complaining! So turn off the TV, roll up your sleeves, and dive into:
Beatlemania: Plunge into the exuberance and musical genius of the Beatles and have a party no one will ever forget.
Opening Day: The first day of the baseball season signals a new beginning and the chance for a family of fans to invent a new tradition.
National Bubble Day: Yes, it really is on January 8, but you can stage this party any day of the year.
Tilting at Windmills: Make like the madcap adventurer Don Quixote on Miguel de Cervantes's birthday.
Lithgow Party Paloozas! shows us how to make holidays unique and birthdays original -- and how to party with a palooza every day of the year.

hilarious fun for kids.......2005-06-01
Do you want your kids to have fun? Of course. Do you want them to learn and grow and explore their worlds imaginatively? Certainly. But can they do both at the same time? If you don't think so, think again: this book is full of ideas that will both entertain your kids and encourage them to think creatively. Lithgow lays out crazy party plans that will definitely be a first in the neighborhood. If you're tired of the same old slumber party and birthday cake, this book is the answer.
