Customer Reviews:
lessons well taught.......2007-10-01
One of the newest attempts at a comprehensive guide to off-loom beading. The book is beautifully bound, with a coiled center binding that allows the pages to lay flat for easy use when working on learning a new stitch or technique or when completing an associated project. Diverse, lovely, and relevant projects are presented throughout in gorgeous color photographs. Directions are clear and easy to understand. Pink or maize highlighted blocks throughout the book present tips on the technique being demonstrated or creativity teases entitled "Try this..." are unique to this volume and give the reader the kind of information that is usually given face to face rather than in print. Also, along with the tried and true forms of beadweaving many stitches that may be unfamiliar to some are also well represented. The names associated with some techniques may be the same that you are used to or slightly different. That author advises you to be accepting and respectful of the stitches on their own, whatever name is used, as they represent the culture and the style period of the beaders that develped the technique. This is a great book that ranks right up there with the most highly rated volumes of this type. Giving you an alternate means to understanding the least or most familiar stitches in your repertoire, "Mastering Beadwork" gives the beader an opportunity to either walk along a familiar path or blaze a new trail.
excellent information.......2007-10-01
Enjoyed the information in this book. Can't wait to try out some of the techniques.
Mastering beadswork.......2007-10-01
Although I own dozens of beadwork books and know most of the seed bead
techniques, this book adds enough new and different ways of doing the
tried and true things that it is worth having. It would be particularly good for beginners, but would also appeal to most levels of beaders.
The color pictures are great too!
Excellent Resource.......2007-09-23
This book can be a reference, a guided step-by step for new stitchers, a project book or inspiration for more experienced beaders. Instructions are clear and well documented.
Great ideas!.......2007-09-17
There are a lot of ideas I want to try in this book, especially the many ropes, the beaded beads and the peyote bracelet (which has a twist to it!).
I think this book is very well written and has many new ideas in it!
Book Description
Contemporary and artistic approaches to crafting trendy felt-bead jewelry are offered in this comprehensive handbook filled with detailed instructions for novices and more advanced tips for seasoned fiber artists. Techniques for creating the felted equivalent of lampworked beads, turquoise focal beads, and mokume gane look-alikes are presented along with inspiring design possibilities. All aspects of the feltmaking process are detailed, such as handling special fibers, dyeing wool, and beading on felt, as well as what types of tools are needed. Step-by-step instructions walk feltmakers through the needle-felting and wet-feltmaking techniques—including flat and three-dimensional work, inclusions, and texture applications—that are used to create wearable works of art.
Customer Reviews:
Falls short of the mark.......2007-08-20
When you think jewelry-making materials, let's face it, handmade felt isn't going to appear high on many lists. We tend to think shiny and delicate. Felt is matte in finish and can be bulky. Of course, it has potential for jewelry - but design is crucial to achieving a contemporary look with broad appeal.
I'm a feltmaker and I love beading and polymer clay jewelry-making so I was eager to get my hands on this book ... but disappointed that it did not meet my expectations. The project samples aren't my cup of tea: I just wouldn't wear most of those items myself. The photography isn't great compared to other craft books I have and there are not enough step by step illustrations. Beginners will struggle with this book. I was perplexed that the round felt ball beads were needle-felted, with a vague reference to the wet feltmaking technique which is so popular for this particular item.
If you are a keen needle-felter then this book might appeal to you more than it did me. And while Carol Huber Cypher does present some good tips and innovative design ideas, my personal preference is for Candice Cooper's 'Felted Jewelry' book. (But hey - maybe there is room on your bookshelf for both!)
Wonderful designs and ideas......if you know how.......2007-03-29
I felt and have for years so I found this book wonderful. Beautiful ideas, covering everthing from brooches, earrings, belts, scarves, necklaces, beads and lariats, this last one in particular had several designs using a focal glass bead and creating a felt version of the glass bead, looked stunning! Gorgeous "botanical" pieces - loved the flowers and variations, accompanied by great photographs.
Huber Cypher uses lots of techniques to showcase the beads, such as beading and wiring and it is clear she loves to "borrow" from other traditional techniques such as mokume gane and lampwork to add beauty and diversity to the pieces. Natural beauty also features heavily with felted representations of natural gemstones. So, if you already know how to felt grab this book and you will be very happy.
If on the otherhand you are a complete beginner then there is a problem. The instructions are certainly minimalistic and the step by step process could be a lot clearer. The photos or drawings of steps are not nearly detailed enough, they are "still" showing you the objects used but not necessarily how to do it. (Try Candice Cooper's Felted Jewelry for a better technical explanation).
Overall though I would still buy this book and I recommend it to my mixed media students, even if you are just starting out the projects are delicious and certainly what you can aspire to in your journey with felt.
Needs more instructional photos.......2006-09-29
This book has some really nice and inspiring projects to do, but for anyone who has never worked with felting, but wants to, it is very hard to visualize the process. Step by step photos would be a big help. Otherwise, it's just frustrating.
Just need a little more.......2006-09-13
photos and descriptions of the sample art are wonderful - very inspiring. and very frustrating - diagrams or pictures of the felting process would be helpful. I just can't envision what is being described but I guess I just need to leap on in...
Yum, Yum!!.......2006-04-26
I got my book last night and had to force myself not to stay up all night reading!! Today, I had the fun of carefully reading thru the whole book. Tonight, I'll get a felting needle! I can't wait to start my projects. The pictures are wonderful, artistic and informative. The introduction is not a history of felting per se but just enough to let you know you are trying an art form that is both ancient and modern. Her color sense for the projects is great and the items look so tactile and sensuous. Having done some felting in the past, it was delightful to see Carol combine lampwork beads and seed beads into the projects to give the items a sense of modern elegance. Not a huge reference section but enough to satisfy the beginner. A book I know I will refer to again and again.
Book Description
"John Cypher spent 40 years (1948-88) on the King Ranch, most of the time as assistant to the president [Bob Kleberg]. Few people could be better qualified to lend an air of intimacy to a story about a 15-million-acre spread and the man who led it for more than 50 years.
Bob Kleberg and the King Ranch combines a biography of Kleberg with the story of the postwar boom years that changed the King Ranch from a Mexican hacienda into a traditional South Texas cattle ranch and finally into an international corporate agribusiness."
Houston Chronicle
"Cypher writes ranch history and personal memories of 'The Boss' with affection and self-effacing loyalty. His easy conversational style makes life on a working ranch, the care and feeding of visiting celebrities and the field of international agribusiness both understandable and entertaining. If [Edna] Ferber were writing
Giant today, she wouldn't need to visit the King Ranch. She could read Cypher's book."
San Antonio Express-News
"Nobody on this earth but you could have written this book with such intimate knowledge of the subject. You have given me insights and information I never had in forty years of devotion to the King Ranch. I salute you."
Tom Lea
"Cypher not only writes well but he is a great story teller and gives the reader probably the best of what will ever be known of the inner Bob Kleberg."
East Texas Historical Journal
". . . a valuable contribution to an understanding of the rich, on-going history of the King Ranch. . . the author is articulate, skillful, and best of all, an excellent storyteller."
David Murrah, Director, Southwest Collection, Texas Tech University
Ranching on the vast scale that Texas is famous for actually happened at King Ranch, a sea of grass that ultimately spread its pastures to countries around the globe under the fifty-year leadership of Bob Kleberg. This absorbing biography, written by Kleberg's top assistant of many years, captures both the life of the man and the spirit of the kingdom he ruled, offering a rare, insider's view of life on a fabled Texas ranch.
John Cypher spent forty years (1948-1988) on King Ranch. In these pages, he melds highlights of Kleberg's life with memories of his own experiences as the "right hand" who implemented many of Kleberg's grand designs. In a lively story laced with fascinating anecdotes he both recounts his worldwide travels with Kleberg as the ranch expanded its holdings to Latin America, Cuba, Australia, the Philippines, Europe, and Africa, and describes timeless, traditional tasks such as roundup at the home ranch in Kingsville.
Kleberg's accomplishments as the founder of the Santa Gertrudis cattle breed and a breeder of Thoroughbred racing horses receive full attention, as does his fabled lifestyle, which included friendships not merely with the rich and famous but also with Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who shared his love of horse racing. For everyone interested in ranching and one of its most famous practitioners, this book will be essential reading.

An entertaining and insightful look at true Texas history........1998-12-22
This is a great book for anyone interested in the cattle business, Texas history, or the politics of big business in the middle of this century. One need not be a rancher or cattleman to enjoy this book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone from any background.

My first grader loves these books.......2007-09-18
I have a 1st grader who reads at the 4th grade level. While his reading skills are great, he is still only 6 and his topics of interest are ...well, the interests of a 6-year-old boy. My son LOVES this series. He curls up with them and reads them on his own, and yet still loves to have them read aloud. Best of all, his dad and I don't mind reading them aloud --- we love them too.

Book Description
This book contains the complete, original Cypher Manuscript of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in facsimile along with fully annotated decipherment, a detailed synopsis of the text and a fascinating history of the manuscript itself. The author provides a scholarly commentary establishing the considerable value of the Cypher Manuscript and offering an elegant defense of Dr. W. Wynn Westcott's motives and methods in creating the Fraulein Sprengel ruse. Runyon suggests that there may have been a real person behind the Sprengel "Charter Myth". The book goes on to reveal that: The Cypher Manuscript contains the ancient design for a radically different Eleven Sphere Tree of Life.
Also included is a never-before-published article written especially for this book by the leading Golden Dawn authority, Robert A. Gilbert, on Dr. Westcott's Cypher Notebook (including facsimiles). These are Westcott's actual notes, taken directly from the cyphers, that he, not MacGregor Mathers, used to develop the Golden Dawn's Outer Order rituals.
There have been other versions of the Golden Dawn Cypher Manuscript published but this is the only book that fully examines the mysterious document and actually reveals its secrets. This book is more than a reference tool for magicians, it is a significant commentary on the origins of the Golden Dawn -- and of interest to all thoughtful students of the esoteric.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating Book of Magick.......2004-11-22
This is a great source book for the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Being a source book, it provides much information for the working occultist. Besides this, like the other books that I have by Carroll Runyon, it is written in a personal, friendly style and brings the knowledge in the book close to one's being.
As I have been working with this book through time, I have found
that it is also an excellant source book for original magickal
knowledge that is hard to find anywhere else.
The Whole Nine Yards, and Then Some!.......2001-11-05
There have been several books on the Golden Dawn Cipher Manuscript. I have two others besides this one--but what this one does that the others don't do, is actually explain what the cipher (cypher) manuscript is all about. And the author does this grade-by-grade so you can follow along in the Golden Dawn and see where everything comes from. On top of that, Runyon presents the best defense of W. Wynn Westcott I've read yet. He makes us wonder just what kind of an axe Ellic Howe was grinding!
Also Runyon has some fascinating appendices on the "Eleven Sphere Tree" in the Ciphers (nobody else has this that I know of). Then, as a special addition: we have R.A. Gilbert's great article on Wynn Westcott's Cipher Notes. What a feast for Golden Dawn buffs! If you are going to get a book on the G.D. Ciphers, this is the only one you'll ever need.
Book Description
The Process of Economic Development is a textbook with a story to tell. It discusses from the colonial era to the present in Latin America, Asia and Africa. Encompassing a nice blend of classical development ideas and current theory, the book helps students gain the type of balanced picture disallowed them by other textbooks.
A close examination of recent events is integral to the book, with discussions ranging from the environment to the debt crisis, and from export-led industrialization to import substitution, endogenous growth theory and technological capability. Throughout, the authors focus on income distribution, poverty, and social issues and the book has a readable style and format.
Plentiful diagrams, boxes and user-friendly summaries, and end of chapter questions help the reader to grasp many-faceted topics. Building upon the impressive and popular first edition, Cypher and Dietz have pulled off that rarity in textbook publishing: a book which will leave student with a frameworkof understanding that will empower them to go on to understand a broad range of "North-South" issues and controversies.

Book Description
``This book provides great insights and perspectives into target cost management practice by combining theory and practice both in the U.S. and Japan.''--Hiroshi Oakano, Professor, Osaka City University. ``Target costing is an essential tool for companies striving to achieve and maintain a position of true cost competitiveness. This book makes an important contribution to the field of strategic cost management, and should be required reading for any executive interested in achieving world-class business performance.''--Charles H. Noski, Senior Vice President and CFO, Hughes Electronics. Target costing has been successfully used as a srategic weapon by Japanese companies for nearly two decades. Now, with Target Costing, Shahid L. Ansari and Jan E. Bell help you understand the tools manufacturers must use by strengthen their companies' competitive advantages. The one-and-only reference on how target costing is building a culture of excellence in many organizations todoay. Target Costing illustrates how this management approach: helped companies like Chrylser, Caterpillar and Boeing make impressive comebacks; centers on the principle that cost management starts before a product is produced; shows why investors looking for solid companies can use target costing as a sign of market dominance.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent introduction to the topic of target costing.......2000-08-23
This book gives an excellent overview of the topic, written in an easy understandable way. The authors have researched numerous articles and studies and compiled them into this work. The book also contains a lot of tables and graphs to illustrate the text. The foundations and the scope of target costing are well discussed and a small case study gives an idea how target costing is working in a practice. Moreover, there are a lot of references to literature and some examples from industry discussed. In the appendix there is a very useful collection of tools used in the target costing.
Definition and scope of target costing as explained in the book:
The target costing process is a system of profit planning and cost management that is price led, customer focused, design centred, and cross-functional. The target costing initiates cost management at the earliest stages of product development and applies it throughout the product life cycle by actively involving the entire value chain.
The difference between target costing and cost management is that the latter focuses on reducing the cost when they are already occurring, that means when the product design and the process are already defined. The target costing approach on the other hand helps to identify the allowable cost for a product in the design stage, the cost at the manufacturing stage are therefore known to be achievable and competitive. Further cost improvements are achieved by kaizen costing (continuous improvement).

this book is best for persons to understand the target costing indeeply with plain english. this book is also suitable for cost management in the globe.

Book Description
Geoffrey Frost, American sea captain and veteran of the Chine Trade, and Ming Tsun, his enigmatic mute friend, return in this latest installment of the highly literate and compelling saga of the American struggle for Independence at sea. After a clash against well-armed British warships, Frost's ship, the privateer Audacity, must be laid up for repairs. Frost, however, is not the kind of man to sit idle for long, and when a new secret weapon invented by David Bushnell comes to light, he recognizes a rare opportunity to strike hard at the complacent English. Commanding the prototype submarine Narwhal, Frost and the freed slave Darius set out to bring terror from below, all the while narrowly avoiding sinking and certain death in the cast iron tomb. Fender proves in this harrowing novel of power and suspense why he is quickly distinguishing himself as one of the eminent voices of American historical fiction.

Book Description
With recent advances in VLSI technology, parallel computers are becoming more prevalent and affordable. The SIMD Model of Parallel Computation presents parallel architecture and parallel algorithms to non-specialists in computer science and engineering. Beginning with an overview of a variety of parallel architectures, the book details the interaction between parallel architectures and parallel algorithms by presenting, for each architecture, algorithms that are tailored to the given architecture. The focus is on the SIMD (Single Instruction Stream, Multiple Data Stream) model of parallel computation and its implementation on both SIMD and MIMD (Multiple Instruction Stream, Multiple Data Stream) architectures. The book presents both introductory and advanced material in parallel computation and for each topology, several existing and proposed parallel machines are discussed and compared. Included is an analysis of parallel algorithms for image processing, scientific and symbolic tasks. The effects of architectural decisions on algorithms are also examined in detail.
