4 out of 5 stars Mad Just Before the Decline........2003-11-02

Mad as a magazine hit its pinacle in the mid 1960s and then began a decline away from the adult readership to the aimed at kids pap it is today.

The 1970s was however was a fertile period but you can see Mad's shift away from social issues towards the entertainment industry.

Still a fun read though.

4 out of 5 stars When MAD was at its best!.......2002-11-03

Reading this book shows you MAD Magazine as it once was, the only place where anyone and anything can be slammed without stirring contrversy. I am a MAD subscriber and the issues I get have a lot of sexual innuendo or white trash humor or stereotypes of young adult life. (But it's still funny) MAD was great in the 70s, and am I glad to own a copy of this!

5 out of 5 stars hysterically funny remembrances of the seventies.......1999-01-20

If you lived through the seventies, and watched t.v. and movies during that period, this will bring all of the fun memories back to you! The satires of the movies and t.v. shows are, in particular, HILARIOUS!!!

5 out of 5 stars Greater than Great! Better than Best!.......2004-08-29

It's a real funny book. It makes me go back to the old days when I bought my first issue of MAD magazine. Actually, no, because I pretty much have alot of Bathroom Companions and this is one of 'em. Very Entertaining or your money back! It's so funny, you feel like you don't have to "go" anymore!

5 out of 5 stars Brings back fond memories.......2003-08-24

What a funny book. It reminds me of being a kid and reading my older brothers mad magazines. I laughed til I cried..

5 out of 5 stars OK, so I read Number two first.......2001-12-10

Since this is Mad Magazine, why not read the books out of sequence? I never read the original book but Number two I have read. I bought this for my son and I must confess that I ended up reading these old Mad pieces from the days when sideburns were long and lapels were wide. Thus, the illustrations date the book as do some of the issues being parodied. Rememebr the Old days when the "On the Lighter Side" series dealt with a single subject? This book goes back to those days. All in all, this is a great trip down Memory Lane as I recall some of the hilarious older issues of Mad. There is one problem with this book: my son left it where it belongs, in the barthroom, and some guests mistook it for toilet paper. Oh well!!!

5 out of 5 stars Some of MAD's Best Work!.......2001-07-06

This isn't one of those books that focuses on one style of writing like TV, Movies, Dogs, or MAD covers, but it gives you the whole SHABANG! This book, correction, work of art, is a combination of tha best articles from tha best MAD writers of all time! Not only did I read it while on the pot like I was supposed too, I read it over and over everywhere I possibly was! I couldn't help myself! Another must have from the Usual Gang of Idiots!

5 out of 5 stars Mad isn't funny. It's hilarious........2001-02-09

Greate idea for a book. Apart from burning it. You can read some of Mad's greatest articles in shortened form! It rocks! I can't think of anyone better to write an introduction than the man who brought life to Canibal!the musical, Orgazmo and BASEketball (Ignoring South Park) to life! Yes, trey parker! Buy it

When American kids of a certain vintage--Bill Clinton, for example, but not Bob Dole--put down their childish things, they picked up MAD magazine. It didn't leave their hands until adulthood hit, and maybe after. The magazine ain't what it used to be, so it's easy to forget how keen it once was. MAD About the Sixties is a long-overdue collection of material from that seminal humor magazine's salad days. It's a welcome reminder that when MAD was good, it was very, very good: it featured solid writing coupled with great art, month after month. The movie and television parodies ("Bats-Man," "Star Blech") are sure to be a hit, whether you saw the originals the first time around or as reruns. While it helps to have lived through the era--particularly for the ad parodies--there's enough generic daffiness in MAD About the Sixties to satisfy the reader who never saw Wings, much less Paul McCartney's other band.

You would like this edition.A friend of mine came from the States and lent me only once, but I must own it to read through it again.I like Mad magazines since I was a kid.To me a person should be a little mad or
funny. But also be intelligent at the same time.
Unfortunately, there are people who are only mad.

3 out of 5 stars A History text of a decade, with a few boffo laughs.......2006-03-26

Great for us Baby Boomers. Younger readers will know the Beatles, but what will they make of "Nikita Kruschev" (who seems to be in more stories than anyone else), or "Cassius Clay", or Joey Bishop? If you are a baby boomer you will enjoy running barefoot through all the nostalgia, scatteringflowers and babana peels (there's even a joke about smoking them!). If you are a BB's parent you will be able to say "I told you so". But younger readers whoare not History buffs will probably start fairly quickly skipping pages to find Don Martin and Spy vs Spy.

5 out of 5 stars Humorous Summary Of The Decade.......2000-07-17

This book, which is a collection of things compiled from Mad Magazine, is funny summary of the decade. Mad About The 60's covers many of the most popular movies and tv shows from the 60's with their usual style of parody. This book also features many of the funniest cartoons that would appear monthly in the magazine such as Dave Berg, Don Martin, ect. Many of the featured elements of this book have a lot to do with the attitude, politics, and lifestyle of the 60's. For a Mad Magazine fan this book is a nice buy.

4 out of 5 stars This is an OK book........1999-10-11

What can one say about mad magazine? I've been reading for a long time. Even though I wasn't alive in the sixties, this book portrays them fairly well. Aside from Mad About The Seventies, this currently tops the Mad Magazine Humor list. With parodies of Gilbert and Sullivan, My Fair Lady, and Lawerence of arabia, this is a must read. My favriote section was in the late sixties. Overall, Superb.

5 out of 5 stars A great addition to lovers of Mad Magazine.......1998-03-22

Anyone who has been following Mad, will really enjoy this book. It is a bit difficult to read like a novel. But, you keep coming back to it and each section keeps you smiling away.

5 out of 5 stars A Book of Complete MADness.......2005-06-12

Let's start out with the fact that I am a HUGE fan of MAD Magazine. I subscribe to it, I have a lot of MAD books, and I have most of the issues ever made. This book is very cheap and if you want to know what MAD is or if you like it, I recommend this or another cheap, short MAD book.

MAD has been around since the 1950's. In the late 60's and early 70's, it was actually looked upon as controversial. Kids and teens loved it, parents really didn't. I'll explain the things you can find in here.

The MAD Students Hate Book: 4 pages of stuff that you most likely hate.
Funniest Part: "Don't you hate...finding out that the kid that you copied those test answers from is even dumber than you are?"
Rating: 7 out of 10

School Supplies Unlimited Wholesale Catalogue: School supplies for your school that will make your children as miserable as possible.
Funniest Part: MADDENING COPY MACHINE lowers student grade averages by cleverly smudging key words in quiz questions. Mechanism is equipped with irregular ink dribbler, automatic stencil ripper, cockeyed paper feeder and other illegibility devices not normally found on copiers in this price range.

When Corporate Sponsorship of Public Schools Goes Too Far!: When there are too many price cuts in a school, you have to depend on big name companies to give you your supplies.
Funniest Part: Some Extinct Organisms; Wooly Mammoth, Saber-Toothed Tiger, Dodo Bird, Mom and Pop Small Corner Hardware Store.

The Lighter Side of..School (Part 1): The Lighter Side of... segment by Dave Berg. (MAD fans will know what that is.)
Funniest Part:
Kid's Mother: Hi, there! How were things at school today?
Kid: We kids got TERRIBLE PROBLEMS!!
Kid's Mother: Oh...? What kind of problems?
Kid: Pneumonia...appendicitis...tuberculosis...pyorrhea...
Kid's Mother: Oh my!! You mean everybody's getting sick from them?
Kid: Boy, I'll say! Those are the WORDS we have to learn for the big SPELLING TEST tomorrow!!
Rating: 10/10

Why Didn't You Do Your Homework?- Excuses for forgetting to do your homework.
Funniest Part: Your father used the last piece of looseleaf in the house as a "pooper scooper" when he walked the dog!

Rating: 7/10

The Lighter Side of School (Part 2): See Part 1.
Funniest Part:
Kid: Today, I was the only kid in class who could answer the teacher's question.

4 out of 5 stars The usual gang of idiots take on Clinton, O.J., and the rest of the 1990s.......2006-03-11

Well, I guess it is a good thing that they downsized "MAD About the '90s: The Best of the Decade," because otherwise there would be little to complain about. It is not like the result is a conventionally sized paperback. Besides, if you put this up on the shelf with "MAD About the '80s," "MAD About Superheroes," and the like, it would nice if this one did not look like a poor relation.

I picked up an issue of "MAD" a couple of times during the 1990s, specifically to check out the parodies of "Titanic" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (the former is here, but not the latter). Now, I cannot speak to the overall quality of the humor magazine during the decade, but when the Usual Gang of Idiots get to cherry-pick like this the results are pretty impressive and you might find yourself wondering why you wasted hours watching "Saturday Night Live" during that decade when you could have been hiding out in the bathroom reading "MAD" again.

There is actually a chronological pattern to what is found within these (undersized) pages, dividing the decade into thirds. Section One: 1990-1993, offers 19 choice covers (e.g., Jack Davis' "Beverly Hillbillies 90210" a choice example), a great ad parody for the Blank Video Club of America, "Where's Waldo? For Complete Morons" by Sergio Aragones, and an ad for a whitetailed deer who has joined the NRA (to avoid being "the deer-ly departed"). For parodies we have "Buried with Children" and "Star Bleech: Deep Space Swine" for television and "The Oddfather Part III," "Home A-Groan," and "The Violence of the Hams" for movies (if you cannot figure out what things are being parodied then you clearly slept through the decade). The standout pieces would be "Superman R.I.P.," "A MAD Look at Jurassic Park," "MAD Raps U Shakespeare," and "The ABC's of Rock." But my favorite has to be "When Roadside Signs Overlap," using real company signs to humorous effect.

Section Two: 1994-1996 highlights are Mort Drucker's cover of "The Clintstones," the MAD mini-poster of "Washington Cross-Dressing the Delaware," another nice Norman Rockwell painting of the 90's ("Last Parking Space at the Mall"), and a couple of nice MAD Fold-Ins. "Fairest Shlump" is the one movie parody, while the tube is done in by "Eech-Files," "SickER," and "Swinefilled." But clearly the greatest fun here is with Bill Clinton and the gang, with "Books to Make Children More Politically Aware," "Only a Republican/Democrat Could Possibly Believe...," and "It's a Blunderful Life," from the Tip of the Capra Dept. Of course, if you really want to know how much things had changed back then, then check out "If James Bond Were 'Updated' for the Politically-Correct '90s."

Finally, Section III: 1997-1999 has choice covers with Kenny from "South Park" killing Alfred who is greeted by Seinfeld with the telling line "Hellooooooooo Neuman!" There are also covers for "Martha Stewart: Dying" and "Entertain Me Weakly," the Latrell Sprewell Maneuver for pretending you are a choking "victim," and a nice Generation Crap piece on the "60's and the 90's," which spells out significant differences. On the parody front MAD does in "Star Bores: Epic Load I, The Fandumb Meganess," "Trypanic," "The Faketrix," and "The Bland Witch Project" at the movie theater, while having plenty of ammo for "Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist Moves to South Park," "Ally's Appeal," and "Everybody Loathes Raymond." But they could really do an entire paperback collection just for Clinton-esque pieces such as the "Starr Wars: Monicagate" movie poster, "Proposed Features of the William J. Clinton Presidential Library," "The Special Prosecutor's Official Report on Mister Rogers," and the "White House Internship - Official Application."

Not everything here is great and I fully admit that the verdict on the O.J. Simpson trial took the wind out of a lot of humor on that particular subject, but the movie and television parodies alone make having this one worthwhile. Who gets tired of Mort Drucker's caricatures, "Spy vs. Spy", or Dave Berg's looks at the lighter side of anything he wants to look at? Besides, there are 48 pages in full color for what appeared on the covers, both front and back and inside as well. Hopefully you will find as much here to be offended by as you will to laugh at, otherwise "MAD" will be tarnishing its sterling reputation as the "short-lived satirical pulp" that "TIME" declared it to be in 1956. All together now: "What--Me Worry?"

2 out of 5 stars Small Size Ruins Book.......2005-06-24

The publishers have ruined this book by making it in a small format instead of maintaining the size used for the previous books in this series. I didn't realize that they had changed the size or I probably would not have ordered the book. The content is OK but not the size.

4 out of 5 stars What's with the size?.......2005-06-19

If I don't rank this book with 5 stars it's only because of the size. I don't know why the publishers who made an excellent work on Mad about the fifties trough mad about the eighties, didn't follow the same pattern and for this jewel they decided to make it short. I don't mean the number of pages; I mean the size, the height, the weight. But anyway, it is a very good compilation.

Even though Mad was always considered a "juvenile humor" magazine, the writing is hilarious and often riskier than anything out there today, and the art is top-notch. Just look at all the gags going on in the backgrounds -- you probably couldn't have made half of them out when the comics were originally printed on cheap paper -- and you'll be glad you bought this book. DC really needs to publish the remaining volumes!

5 out of 5 stars HUMOR THAT STILL HOLDS UP TO THIS DAY.......2006-01-27

I remember when I was young how much MAD Magazine used to make me laugh. The satire was wonderfully organized in a way that both kids and adults could enjoy it. Much like the Warner Brothers cartoon shorts did when they shown to audiences at the theater.
In the 70's and 80's MAD magazine would do special issues that contained mini color comics of the original color comic book when they started with EC Comics. I found that these comics were just as funny and sometimes even stranger than some of the current artists from MAD at that time. Much to my delight
DC comics took the original six issues and placed them in a fantastic large hardcover book.
This is one of the most beautiful reprinting works I have seen. The colors and the paper quality of this book is designed to last a lifetime. If you truly enjoy classic comic books, classic MAD Magazine or an adult who adores film parodies, then you must own this book.
This is just not a comic book , but a piece of history and how parody became a part of the mainstream. Remember that back in 1952 when these were first published, the idea of reading comic books was for children or the working class. This was not considered good adult reading material by literary standards yet.
But yet these teams of adult writers and artists took the first steps in changing the concepsts of literary humor that we now live with today.
At only 10 cents an issue, people who had a taste for off beat humor, horror stories, or science fiction picked up EC comics. This was a perfect outlet for teens as well of the 50's who loved movies of a simular nature. The comic writers refect that same love of TV and film through their parodies of Superman,Tarzan, and the Lone Ranger.
DC just now needs to release the other issues past #6. I was lucky to read so many of those mini re-prints and some of those stories still make me laugh when I think about them today. These orignal six issues don't even cover how funny MAD eventually grew up to be as a comic. But you can kind of tell since this little comic survived and one day became a beloved magazine.

If you have ever been a fan of mad magazine any point in your life you need to see where it all began. From the page of The Mad archives vol. 1 you will see the first six issues of mad EVER. Social comentary, gross humor, at best a critical eye at the golden age of EC comics and comics everywhere (the thinly veiled superman parody is worth the price of the book alone) Despite appeal to comic fans (wally wood, and some of the best golen age comic artist to grace one single archive), every one who understands the phrase "What me worry?" READ THIS. you wont be disapointed. Only question WHEN WILL VOL 2 BE OUT????????

5 out of 5 stars This book is like a dream come true!!.......2002-11-06

I am now working in printing and desktop publishing because of MAD. When I was 9 years old my Grandmother gave me about ten of my Uncle's old MADs from the early days. I was drawn into the crazy world of those amazing drawings and the funny dialog. Every day after school I would copy the drawings from MAD, which is what led me into graphic arts. Over the years I have been collecting old MADs, which my 13 year old likes to read from time to time.

I understand what it takes to produce any type of publication, and I have often wondered where the original artwork or the negatives from the first MADs ended up. Unless I am totally wrong, I think this book was printed from the original art or the original film. I am very impressed with the care with which this book was produced. The detail and color is first rate, and the printing is excellent.

I now own a perfect copy of the first six MADs produced. For someone who is interested in art and printing and comic book history, this is a must. Very cool!! I look forward to the next set.

5 out of 5 stars Mad takes on Superduperman, Battyman and their friends.......2002-11-29

Superman and Batman appear on the cover of "Mad About Super Heroes," along with Alfred E. Newman, because most of the parodies found within have to do with those two comic book icons. For the Man of Steel the fun goes all the way back to Harvey Kurtzman's classic "Superduperman!" from "Mad" #4 (back when it was still a comic book) to "Smellville" from Mad #415. However, "Superduperman!", the parody of the comic book, is not to be confused with "Superduperman" the take off on the first movie, which were followed by "Spuerduperman II" and "Stuporman ZZZ," which is not to be confused with the television series "Lotus & Cluck: The New Misadventures of Stuporman." One of the things I found interesting reading through these stories was how hard it must be after several decades to come up with a new name for Superman's secret identity, from Clark Bent to Cluck Camp.

The Caped Crusader receives similar treatment, from the classic Wally Wood drawn "Bat Boy and Rubin!" to "Bats-Man" the television show to the blockbuster "Battyman" movie and its "Buttman Returns" and "Buttman and Rubbin'" sequels. This collection comes courtesy of "the usual gang of super-idiots," and includes classic artwork by Mort Drucker, Sergio Aragones, Al Jafee, Angelo Torres, and Don Martin (these guys must have worked for nothing because this book is, by its own admission, priced "Cheap!). There are two sections in the volume that offer up the stories in full-color, but, of course, these are restricted to offerings from the comic book days of "Mad" (e.g., "Plastic Sam" and "Woman Wonder") and back covers (e.g, "Famous Artists' Paintings of Comic Book Characters").

There are other full-length movie parodies as well of the "X-Men" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movies, although I liked the "Upcoming Movies Based on Comic Books," which simply offered up quickies on "Human Torch Song Triology," "Hulk Fiction" and "JLA Confidential." Another favorite is the "Real-Life Superhoeres at Comic Book Conventions," which uses the names of familiar heroes from "The Amazing Spider-Man" to "Wonder Woman" to describe the fans who read such literature. So there is a nice mix of formats to these comic looks at the comic books as the world's greatest super heroes are "mercilessly mocked and ridiculed by the world's dumbest artists and writers." Of course, if you did not read the original comics or see these movies, then you will never ever get all of the jokes. But then that is the whole point of satire, right?

5 out of 5 stars A great book of parodies.......2002-08-13
