This is a valuable set of case studies on development projects that actually benefit the grassroots. Although set in Bolivia, many of the lessons apply to other parts of the developing world. The book is well written and would be a great text for a course in development studies.

5 out of 5 stars it makes you feel good!.......2004-06-16

The intimate travel details and encounters with prospective project developers in Bolivia are revealed in this book. You read about the many projects that the IAF has sponsored, successful at times and not, it is great to know that these projects have been throughly researched by IAF employees.

It makes you feel good to see U.S. dollars go into super positive grassroots projects.

The projects included in this book are diverse and very intriguing. Highly recommended!

The business behind creating and producing comics, cartoons, or, specifically, animation is nothing short of fascinating. More than a "behind the scenes" book or a "tell all" expose, Serious Business is a great find for this reason: it places an emphasis on the creative people in the industry. To quote the dust cover: "The history of animation is the story of its geniuses. Serious Business disperses the clouds created by decades of received wisdom, bogus myth-making, and corporate propaganda to reveal a cast of characters whose entertainment value exceeds that of their creations."

Book Description

First time in paperback: the behind-the-scenes story of the cartoon business from its silent-era beginnings to today's computer-generated animation-and how these 'toons reflect America's values and dreams

As Roger Rosenblatt put it, "What makes Serious Business a special treat is that it is like the best of the cartoons itself-funny, touching, and infused with thoughtful joy." This generously illustrated history of animation looks at the creation and celluloid careers of such American icons as Felix the Cat, Jiminy Cricket, Mickey and Minnie, Popeye and Olive Oyl, Goofy, Yogi Bear, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Daffy Duck, Tom and Jerry, and the Pink Panther. Art and commerce collide again and again as Stefan Kanfer wittily probes the origins of such diverse cartoon families as The Flintstones, The Jetsons, and The Simpsons and looks at the phenomenal success of feature-length animated films such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and The Lion King. Serious Business is itself a classic of animation, bringing to life an art and an industry whose creations have now worked their way into every corner of American life.

3 out of 5 stars No Betty-Boop.......2006-02-02

Amazon search indicated this was all Betty Boop so I bought this especially for a Betty Boop nut. Betty Boop was on the cover but nowhere in the index! So now I am reading it to see if I wasted my money.

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag..........1999-10-26

"Serious Business" is generally a good book, though with a few major flaws. It distinguishes itself by providing not only an overview of the history of cinematic animation in the US, but also places the rise and fall of animation in a historical and cultural context. It gives a clearer picture of how the politics and economics of the times influenced and steered not only the creation and content of animated pictures, but also the business aspects as well.

On the plus side, Kanfer does indeed delve beyond the standard name-and-dates syndrome of other animation histories. He attempts to provide a broad overview of the early years of animation and how non-Disney studios were to eventually fall to the Mouse. When focused, Kanfer's writing is extremely engaging and his accounts of the various political maneuverings are facsinating.

Unfortunately, Kanfer attempts to squeeze too much into to little space. One could easily see this book being twice the size it is now. As such, the very aspects one wants to explore most - how such things as economics, war, race and politics in America effected animation - are never really fleshed out for any given studio/cartoon beyond a few pages, or paragraphs. Significant space is given to Disney's story (perhaps deservedly so), but I would've liked to learn more about 'outsider' studios as well.

Kanfer also has a habit of not staying focused in his chapters and bouncing suddenly from place to place. It doesn't make the book unreadable by any means, but it does distract from the over-all flow of the narritave.

All in all though, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in a general historical overview of animation.

4 out of 5 stars A good book, but not a great one........1997-09-06

A good read, but not the great book it could have been. It could easily have been twice as long. Early chapters are strongest. Strong on Disney. Would like to have seen more on Looney Tunes

4 out of 5 stars Great intro to American animation history!.......1997-07-12

Well written, concise survey of American animation history. The only slights are that he doesn't have much to say on non-Disney animated efforts of the past decade, especially television animation, and that too many pages praise the horrendous UPA 'toons. Otherwise, this is a great intro to a neglected sector of American culture. If you want to learn about cartoons without buying a separate book on each major company, this should be your choice

In the spring of 1999, following a series of programs devoted to losing weight, Good Morning America ran a Cut the Calories Cook-off. Over 1,100 viewers of this popular TV show submitted recipes for either an entree or a dessert. The resulting cookbook features 120 recipes, including a few contributed by chefs Emeril Lagasse and Sara Moulton. Dishes include the 50 semifinalist recipes, plus others considered delicious by judges Lagasse, Moulton, Wolfgang Puck, and Michael Lomonaco of Windows on the World in New York City.

The grand-prize winners? Oven Fried Chicken with Andouille Sausage and Caramel Cheesecake with Praline Sauce. The chicken's crunch comes from crispy rice cereal and this all-American dish is seasoned with Parmesan cheese and cumin. The conquering cheesecake, a snap to make, is accompanied by a creamy sauce studded with pecans. The recipes, overall, reflect America's broadening taste for spicy foods and national acceptance of ethnic ingredients, with dishes calling for chili peppers--chipotles, anchos, green, even red jalapeños--and Chinese hoisin sauce, Italian balsamic vinegar, and Cajun Andouille sausage.

Cheesecake is truly a favorite American dessert, with six recipes for it in this book. A cook from Oregon even managed to slim down one with a chocolate crust, chocolate filling, and hazelnut topping. Fruit desserts are well represented, too. Most remarkable is Sweet Nachos featuring cinnamon-sprinkled, crisped tortillas topped with a luscious, warm raspberry "salsa" and creamy topping.

With so many Americans needing to slim down, this book should be a big winner, thanks to its easy and alluring recipes. --Dana Jacobi

An OK cookbook. There are others I liked much better. All the Weight Watcher cookbooks for example. Most likely I will only cook only a few of the recipes in this cookbook.

5 out of 5 stars Yum........2001-04-07

I'm a huge cooking fan. I'm a huge food fan. And I'm a huge Sara Moulton fan.

So I almost fell over when I saw that not only was Ms. Moulton editing a cookbook, but she was going to be at a booksigning in my town. But I digress.

There I got to try a few of the cookies that were in the book, which was nice. As soon as I got home, I made the lemon meringue cookies, which I still make @ least weekly - they're incredibly easy, really really good, and low cal. Does it get any better?

Also, I enjoyed reading this cookbook. It was interesting to read about the people who submitted their recipes, as well as the stories behind them. All in all, a very good find.

So another year another time at attempting to eat right. I saw Good Morning America when Sara was tempting Charlie and Diane with the different dishes. So I thought I would give the book a shot. It is the absolute best cookbook I have. My kids and my husband love the food that I have made so far. I am dropping the pounds and we are all eating healthier. Most important rule of this cookbook was that the food had to taste good. Try the grand prize winner Chicken and Andouille Sausage it is the best.

As co-editor of THE GOOD MORNING AMERICA CUT THE CALORIES COOKBOOK, I'd just like to say that Sara Moulton is a joy to work with, the consumate professional-- knowledgeable, decisive, cooperative and upbeat always. She hopes to be writing her own cookbook soon-- look for it a couple years down the line. Meanwhile, please check out two books of my own (which, incidentally, are two of Sara's favorites): THE NEW DOUBLEDAY COOKBOOK (big and basic) and THE AMERICAN CENTURY COOKBOOK (a culinary nostalgia trip through the 20th century with more than 500 of that century's most beloved recipes). jean anderson

5 out of 5 stars She cooks for everyone...........2000-04-24

Sara Molton is a cook for everyone. She breaks it all down, and makes it so easy for an average person to get into the kitchen and create. She's wonderfully talented and such a great people person. Her receipes are fun, healthy and really easy to follow. And, she knows that average people want to make healthy receipes that are tasty too. She's a great resource and her TV shows on the FOODNetwork, are top notch. I recommend this book for everyone that loves to cook, and for those just starting out.

    Book Description

John Waters is the notorious director of such cult-movie classics as "Pink Flamingos", "Female Trouble", "Desperate Living" and "Hairspray".

Desperate Visions features several in-depth interviews with Waters, as well as with members of his legendary entourage including Divine, Mary Vivian Pearce, Mink Stole and Miss Jean Hill. George and Mike Kuchar are the directors of such low budget/ underground classics as "Sins of the Fleshapoids" and "Hold Me While I'm Naked". Their visionary trash aesthetic was a great influence on the young John Waters.

Desperate Visions includes extensive interviews with the Kuchars, as well as a comprehensive assessment of their career and influence. A unique feature on actress, Marion Eaton, star of the gothic porn epic "Thundercrack!", is also included. With many rare photographs, filmography and index, Desperate Visions is an essential introduction to the wild world of John Waters and to the outrageous camp/underground film tradition which his movies exemplify.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars shock me shock me shock me with that deviant behavior.......2002-01-01

While essential fare for John Waters completists, "Desperate Visions" does not offer much information about the director of "Pink Flamingos" and other cult classic films that cannot be found elsewhere. As far as literature about Waters' productions and his cast of crazies, I recommend reading his own "Shock Value" and "Crackpot." These books, which also feature interviews with dreamlanders and articulate in hilarious prose the director's views and philosophis, are every bit as outrageous as the films themselves. What "Desperate Visions" offers is an excellent introduction by Jack Stevenson that takes a probing look at how Waters' films work in a socio-political context. He does gush about the work, but he deconstructs it too, and in an interesting way. His handling of the interviews is less compelling, as he seems to be pushing for the various actors to wax as shocking and ludicrous as they are in the movies. This works only with Jean Hill, the 400-lb actress known for her turn as Griselda in "Desperate Living," whose insane segment is worth the price of the book alone. Also included are pictures from her photo shoot at Jumbo magazine that you really have to see to believe.

The second half of "Desperate Visions" is about Mike and George Kuchar, twin independant film-makers whose work had a tremendous influence on Waters. I didn't expect to get into this part considering I had only seen one Kuchar film prior to reading it, but what a fascinating read! Stevenson locates their work in the 1960's underground film movement and provides a history o f what was going on at that time. He also includes a number of written works by George Kuchar that are incredibly beautiful. And finally, there is a chunk of the book devoted to Marion Eaton, a cult celebrity who appeared in some of their films. I was left wishing that "Thundercrack!" had been released on video - hell, DVD - before it's untimely demise.

3 out of 5 stars Desperate Visions: The journal of alternative cinema.......2000-05-12

For fans of John Waters, Divine, the brothers Kuchar and the rest of this perverted cavalcade, this book is a must. The interviews are rather informative, almost a little too informative, being as how a lot of the content is focused on very personal experiences and unless you ran with the crowd in Baltimore you have no idea what Stevenson and Waters are talking about. The pictures are awesome. There are some nice shots of Waters' first flicks including Hag in a Black Leather Jacket and Eat your Makeup. The section on the Kuchars was not nearly as interesting to me because i am much more of a Waters fan. I am sure it is very well done if you are a fan of those Kucharian films. Still, it's hard not to feel left out of the loop. The filmography and index are especially helpful. Not something to just sit down and read. More of a film class research type piece. Also, many good quotes.

    Book Description

Tweety Bird was colored yellow because censors felt the original pink made the bird look nude. Betty Boop's dress was lengthened so that her garter didn't show. And in recent years, a segment of Mighty Mouse was dropped after protest groups claimed the mouse was actually sniffing cocaine, not flower petals. These changes and many others like them have been demanded by official censors or organized groups before the cartoons could be shown in theaters or on television.

How the slightly risqué gags in some silent cartoons were replaced by rigid standards in the sound film era is the first misadventure covered in this history of censorship in the animation industry. The perpetuation of racial stereotypes in many early cartoons is examined, as are the studios' efforts to stop producing such animation. This is followed by a look at many of the uncensored cartoons, such as Lenny Bruce's Thank You Mask Man and Ralph Bakshi's Fritz the Cat. The censorship of television cartoons is next covered, from the changes made in theatrical releases shown on television to the different standards that apply to small screen animation. The final chapter discusses the many animators who were blacklisted from the industry in the 1950s for alleged sympathies to the Communist Party.

4 out of 5 stars Animation - not just cartoons.......2002-12-04

Animation has always been a reflection of popular culture, sometimes on the cutting edge, sometimes just a mainstream reaction. Yet because of the popular idea that animation is "kids stuff," it is sometimes not taken seriously. Cohen tries to shine a light on how animation goes way beyond "kids stuff" and reflects on the social forces that went into the creation of animated shorts and features. Despite being seen as a niche, animation has been subjected to a lot of self imposed rules of what can and cannot be shown, and to a lot of outside forces by both organized efforts such as the Hayes Office and less organized efforts such as popular protests against films like Coonskin or Fritz the Cat.

You do not have to know a lot about animation to enjoy this book. It helps, but most of us have been exposed to a number of the examples cited over the course of growing up. And what is politically incorrect is a moving target, so what was acceptable in one era is wholly out now. We see it even today with the television censorship of violence in classic cartoons.

It's also important to note that despite being seen as a less serious medium that could often get away with more than film, animators were still subject to the same winds of politics as illustrated by the final chapter on blacklisting. Animators were asked to name names to the HUAC, and many did not work in Hollywood again for defying the committee. Until I read this book I had no idea of the breadth of this blacklisting upon animators and it reinforces the shame of this era of our history.

Rather than passing judgment, Cohen uses mostly illustrations to show his point, letting the reader decide how much was/is too much. And he brings this battle of content into the late 20th century with examples of battles over The Simpsons, and Ren and Stimpy. Overall a very fascinating look into an area that is usually glossed over or ignored.

5 out of 5 stars Cohen exposes the petty reasons for cartoon censorship.......1999-08-12

Cohen does a remarkable job illustrating the history of cartoon censorship. From Walt Disney's Song of the South and its questionable portrayal of African American's to the altering of the hemline of Betty Boop's dress, Cohen explores significant and petty reasons for censorship. He also discusses how cartoonists would sometimes censor themselves. A discussion of pre code cartoons, such as the early Betty Boop pictures, is also included. Truly a superb book for anyone interested in cartoon censorship.

4 out of 5 stars This book is a thorough look into the history of animation........1999-05-03

I enjoyed "Forbidden Animation". I am a huge fan of animation history, and I am happy that books about the political censoring of animation in the past and present are finally being produced. Karl Cohen should be commended for his thorough research of the subject, he definetly tried his hardest to bring an objectional perspective to the recorded documents involving the censoring of cartoons and animators. The books only real downfall is its lack of images-I'm not someone who has to have pictures, but when art and animation is the subject, you understand it more when you have something to look at-. I highly recommend this book to any animation historians out there, as well as people who want a better understanding of cartoons and their makers.

    1 out of 5 stars America's Least Informative.......2001-06-23

If your goal in reading this book is to see lots of names thrown around with cursory information such as Gary Coleman's date of birth, then this book is for you. If on the other hand, you are looking for insight into the psychological aspects of being a child star or a former child star, bypass this book.

I expected to learn, for example, what it was like to memorize a script a week? What it was like to do rehersal after rehersal? What it was like to have people pestering you for autographs? What was like to search for acting jobs after you were no longer a cute kid. I found none of this.

Instead, I read a printed version of Entertainment Tonight. In fact is was less insightful. After finishing the book, I asked myself, "What was this book about?".

5 out of 5 stars Just plain good.......2001-04-05

I keep this on my end table and thumb through it quite regularly while vegging out in front of Nick at Nite. It's humorous. It's moving. It's honest. I almost feel guilty watching Diff'rent Strokes reruns now after reading a different perspective. It put a very human side to the problems that you have seen in various tabloids and E! True Hollywood stories.

    5 out of 5 stars Definitely Worth a Look!.......2001-01-24

I seriously wasn't expecting this book to be seriously this good. I picked it up because I thought it looked funny -- "America's Least Wanted" (Ha!)

But it's no one-note, boy-aren't-former-child-stars-screwed-up joke. This is a *real* book. It's an actual, honest-to-god history of the TV kid star. It starts with Ricky Nelson and goes on all the way down to the "Saved by the bell" kids, I think. Fascinating!

I guess, the thing to say is that it's like a *really* good "E! True Hollywood Story" (the author doesn't skimp on the scandals!), but it's more than that. You don't feel stupid after reading it (like you feel stupid after sitting through one of those E! things). You feel like you -- ohmigod! -- actually *learned* something.

The book that "America's Least Wanted" most reminds me of is "Raging Bulls, Easy Riders," that great book about the film industry in the 1970s. Like "Raging Bulls," it's got a take on a particular people and it tells its story well.

    Definitely worth a look!

5 out of 5 stars Simply Outstanding And Gives A Cold Hard Look At Reality.......2000-12-28

This novel is perhaps one of the most interesting and indepth pieces of literature I have had the pleasure of reading. It gives the reader the cold-hard facts of life after the glitter and galmour of the screen is over. This novel presents the aftermath of how some stars were able to cope with not being stars anymore and how some were not so lucky. It is a must for anyone who would like to know what has happened to his or her favorite childhood actor or actresses from a particular sitcom.

I used this book to find out information about animation. Whether or not you would like this book depends on why you are reading it. If you need or want to find about every aspect of animation, this is the book for you. However, if you need a lot of information on a specific type of animation, this is not the book to which you should turn. This book discusses all different aspects of animation and all types of animation, but it doesn't go into deep detail. I gave it a neutral rating because it may or may not be of help to you.

Even if you don't agree with the editors that screenwriting is the toughest and riskiest profession in the movie business, this lovely book holds tremendous appeal. Screenwriters offers unique visual and verbal portraits of each of the 47 writers covered. The striking photographs presented here were exhibited at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The book also offers brief comments from the screenwriters on the art of writing, particularly for the silver screen.

Paul Schrader, who wrote the screenplays for Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Affliction, claims, "Everybody wants to talk. It's like a compulsion." Nora Ephron, who scripted You've Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, and When Harry Met Sally..., compares writing for the screen to "delivering a great big beautiful plain pizza, then the director sees it and wants to add mushrooms, and others want to add green peppers and anchovies, until you have a pizza with everything and you think, 'Why didn't I lie down in traffic to prevent anyone's putting green peppers onto the pizza?'" Novelist Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, from whose pen flowed the Merchant-Ivory adaptations of Howards End, The Remains of the Day, and A Room with a View, maintains: "Whether I'm writing films or fiction, I feel I'm always the same writer with the same concerns--about making a story move; about establishing interesting characters and developing the relationship between them."

Reading this book, one realizes how little most of us know about screenwriters. Considering the media attention lavished upon actors and actresses, it is refreshing and revealing to hear from the people who craft the words uttered onscreen. Although we may have listened to screenwriters' words without recognizing their authors, this book gives us the chance to pay attention to their voices. --Raphael Shargel

I love this book. Initially, when I first bought it, it was for the photography, which is outstanding. But as I would leaf through it, again and again I was struck by the poetic and thoughtful writing. It's become something of an inspiration for me now as I work to remain creative with my own artistic endeavors.

All artists, especially struggling and neophyte screenwriters, owe it to themselves to check out this beautiful work. Another reviewer put it well; it's about time writers got their due.

As a screenwriter myself, I was inspired to explore the worlds of other writers...I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the arts of any kind

It's about time writers receive their 15 minutes of fame. This book has given me the inspiration to start writing again after a long break. Lumme and Manninen capture the screenwriters like no one ever has. I can't wait to see what story their next book brings to life.

5 out of 5 stars An inspirational exploration.......1999-11-19

Because writers are behind the scenes -- way behind the scenes -- we can only guess what they are trying to tell us with each new screenplay. That's why I loved seeing their faces and hearing their words -- listening to some of them go on and on about their craft and others sum up their reactions to years of hard work in 10 or 20 well-chosen words. I didn't need this book when I bought it -- or at least I didn't think so. Now I turn back to it time and again for inspiration. I don't feel as if I've been talked down to, rather that I got a glimpse deep into the writers' souls.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring study of the writerýs craft.......1999-09-17

This is a book for writers. Sure, it's full of pictures, but mostly it's about the pursuit of story. Everybody thinks actors and directors make movies, but it's the writer who creates the characters, dreams up the story, makes us care what happens. These are some of the world's greatest writers and they are incredibly candid here. It's funny to me that every magazine interviews novelists, but who interviews screenwriters other than Variety and, now, these guys? Screenwriters must be the most invisible, hardworking artists on the planet. Lumme and Manninen offer a very unusual glimpse, literally and figuratively, of the idea makers of Hollywood. Manninen achieved the impossible, finding compelling ways to photograph people who must spend 99% of their lives staring at a computer. The common trait in all the portraits is the writer's twinkle in the eye. There's an idea banging around in that head, maybe a couple. I found this a very refreshing take on the creative process. It is puzzling that Screenwriters is apparently the first such book. Personally, I'd like to hear more from the people who are pretty much the acknowledged masters of modern storytelling. Bonus: In addition to a bunch of funny and interesting anecdotes, there are a good many real writing tips divulged. I felt genuinely inspired by this book, and I don't even have an idea for a screenplay. Maybe I'll get one now. Two thumbs way up.
