Book Description

Insatiable is an astonishingly moving story of four teenage girls whose shame, fear and confusion compel them to binge, purge and refuse to eat in misguided attempts to feel safe and in control of their lives. This incredible, imaginative story, written in episodic format, is based on real case histories and tells a true-to-life story through character-driven vignettes. Insatiable will envelop readers in the personal and seemingly tangible worlds of each of the main characters. What makes this novel so forceful and vibrant is the way Eliot weaves her story through dynamics that inform these friendships and the therapy that helps them address their pain and fears. For every teen trapped in this seemingly endless cycle, and those who simply enjoy reading about real life issues (i.e. teen bestsellers Speak and Smack), Insatiable is a must-read.

Eve Eliot, Insatiable (HCI Teens, 2001)

Eve Eliot has done something that few, if any, other authors who write about eating disorders have done: she considered the fat kid.

I mean, think about it. We're constantly hearing that childhood obesity is an epidemic in the United States, and the diet book industry has gone through the roof in the past couple of decades. (Would that I'd written The Eat Your Weight in Bushes and Slim Down! diet book five years ago. I'd be rich.) And yet every book I've picked up dealing with childhood eating disorders is preoccupied with anorexia and bulimia. One might call it an obsession, even. Books on eating disorders, as a rule, do not talk about childhood obesity.

Eliot feels the pull, though. Anorexia and bulimia is sexy, from the perspective of addressing eating disorders. And three-quarters of Eliot's main characters fall solidly into the anorexia/bulimia camp, and those three, as one would expect, get much of the screen time here (and more of the drama). But at least we have Phoebe, the smart, popular girl who cannot stop eating. And her presence in this book alone, let alone the fact that certain chapters of the book focus on her, raises the book a couple of notches by itself.

Eliot gives us the story (thinly-veiled nonfiction, I'd expect; Publisher's Weekly calls it "a work of fiction based on actual case histories," which I assume means it's got more truthiness than, say, a James Frey book) of four teenagers who all have eating problems. They also have a few side-effect-style problems (one character is a cutter, though the actual descriptions of cutting and its psychological effects sound more like they were absorbed from a psych journal instead of direct experience), but the eating disorders take center stage.

There's a lot of potential here, but much of the time, I wasn't sure under what it was hiding. The dialogue tends to flatness, the characters to steretypical actions (though they are well-drawn, especially for a book based on case histories), and the whole thing seems dated thanks to the details on which Eliot chose to focus in places, especially clothing and hairstyles. But Eliot does rise up from the mundane every once in a while, and when she does, this becomes a fascinating little work. Most of these times are when the girls are at their worst and give in to whatever desire each happens to be fighting. When Eliot's writing the bad stuff, she really takes off. It's the connective tissue in between that could have used some work.

But still, she considered the fat girl. And that's worth checking out, for its rarity if nothing else. ** ½

1 out of 5 stars annoying.......2006-03-27

Okay, I haven't finished reading this book. So far it's just getting on my nerves with all of the stupid dialogue, flat, boring characters, and horrible writing.

I also noticed that the author's favorite color seems to be green for most things she describes are green (i.e., green shirt, green couch, lime green hair thing, etc). And that's getting on my nerves.

Seriously, like some people have mentioned, the dialogue in this book is unrealistic. Someone else stated that the author is trying too hard and I agree.

Someone else stated that this book is triggering and I agree. It made me want to eat like the fat girl. And not eat like the anorexic smoker.

This book is weird and it sucks and I'm not even halfway done with it. The author gets repetitive with the bulimic's OCD about cleaning her room and looking at zebras and the fat one wanting to be skinny like the anorexic smoker.

Don't bother with this book. It's a waste.

3 out of 5 stars Insatiable.......2005-09-30

This book got off to a fairly good start; the situations are catching. However, I think that the author tried to include a little too much. Jessica-anorexic AND a smoker; Hannah-bulimic AND dealing with being an asexual lesbian; Samantha-anorexic AND a cutter, and so on, and also in making Phoebe, the friendly, intelligent binger, and Jessica, her polar opposite (a cold, rather empty-headed anorexic) her best friend. The ending was also very predictable in the way things worked out: one by one three of the four girls start therapy, then the fourth one dies. It's rather unrealistic. Too many eating-disorder books end in Therapy Happily Ever After.

The scenes in which each girl succumbed to her disorder were fairly thrilling and very well written. The thoughts were absorbing and you could really identify with them, even if you had never felt them before, as when I read about Hannah throwing up. Eliot captured in great detail the gist of each disorder and the forced lifestyle that follows, but I think she's too into happy endings.

5 out of 5 stars This book makes you want to starve yourself.......2005-04-15

I think that people should stop writing books on Anorexia, Bulimia and Cutting because it only drives you to do it.
While reading this book I myself suffer from being a Cutter and a Bulimic, every time Samantha cut herself it made me want to cut, every time Hannah made herself throw up I wanted to make myself throw up, every time Phoebe went into the kitchen to fill up on milk, cookies, ice cream and pie, it made me want to do the same thing, and every time Jessica starved her self for food it made me want to starve myself.
If your Anorexic, Bulimic or a Cutter you shouldn't read this book because it doesn't help you at all it only inspires you to harm yourself even more.
This was a good book but it has some bad effects.

By: Nicole Rojas ISBN 1558748180 Image coming home every day with that one felling that you are fat? With that felling that you could any day grow up to be a big and plump. The sad part about this may be that felling inside your self but the even worse part about it that hundreds and thousands of teens around the world feel this way about their body. Teens with Anorexia and Bulimia aren't really self-confident about their body image. They could be the skinniest people in the world and yet they are hurt by food. This is all learned in the book Insatiable by: Eve Eliot

Jessica, Hannah, Samantha, and Phoebe are all four girls with the same sort of problems having to deal with food. Hannah, who is the one in the book that throws up, deals with her mothers death and pretty much blames it on herself for the loose of her mother. She does eat but the thing that she has is Bulimia. Where you throw-up right after your eat. It is a though she has these cravings for food but once she gobbles them all down she purges. Samantha, a blond cheerleader is another character in the book. Samantha faces the trouble of Anorexia and is dealt with her boyfriend dumping her because of her Anorexia he is scared to know what might happen if he continues the relation ship any longer. Jessica who is also friends with Phoebe in the book consist of cutting her se......Phoebe is a normal girl who's father stress her out on about her weight. Her father thinks that Phoebe should start to look more like the young ladies and teens he photographs. In the book Phoebe feels as though she cannot do any thing about it. What do Phoebe learn once Jessica dies? You'll have to read to find out!

It is a very hart thumping book that will have you go to the edge of your seat. With in every chapter there is a problem. This book was very interesting to read and I think that most teenage girls will really enjoy this book. All of them dealt the same subject but in different issues. It is worth reading and the cool thing about it is that most of the stuff are facts since the author is a therapist with eating disordered teens.

Book Description

With her passion for fine food and, above all, her appetite for love and life, Gael Greene traces her rise from a Velveeta cocoon in the Midwest to powerful critic of New York magazine. Love and food, foreplay and fork play, haute cuisine and social history--all become inextricably linked as the author lifts the lid on her most provocative subject yet--herself. Along the way there are tales of her saucy erotic adventures and intimate portraits of the culinary icons of our time--Julia Child, Andr+ Soltner, James Beard, among others--and revealing dissections of New York's legendary "in" spots, including Elaine's, Le Bernardin, Le Cirque, Odeon, and Balthazar.

2 out of 5 stars Edit Me Please- An Excess of Ego.......2007-07-22

Will I ever finnish this tedious tome? An excess of ego and pointless information. Ruth Reichel's exsquiste "Comfort Me with Apples" benefitted from a genius of editing, I longed for more. With Insatiable I want less. Ms. Greene sometimes writes about food as if it were ad copy.

I had to laugh when she wonders after her second one night stand with Clint Eastwood "I wondered if there could have been something more beyond the hotel room that night"....

I would urge anyone interested in food writing and personalities worth spending time with to read all three of Ruth Reichel's memiors, any of MFK Fisher, and Amanda Hesser's "Cooking for Mr. Latte". A rewarding read awaits you.

1 out of 5 stars Only Insatiable if you enjoy name dropping after name dropping.......2007-07-09

I was so looking forward to another food critic's life story like Ruth Reichl's Garlic and Sapphire - one of the best books I have ever read.

I was seriously dissappointed. I realize that at the time Greene became a food critic, critics were well known by the restauranteurs and treated like Queens with special menus the rest of the people dining did not ever see, but I had no idea how bad it was. To think everyones opinion was determined by a few egotistical food critics in New York who never ate the way the rest of the people did is disgusting. Couple this with her flamboyant use of her magazines money to pay for all her meals (and her lovers meals) and you can't find a reason to enjoy the true life of Gael Greene.

Frankly, for me, her little splurge with a porn star was the most interesting part of the book, but then she would move on to sleep with the very chefs she was reviewing.

Halfway through the book it became a real snore with very little mention of food - which is why a foodie would buy such a book. Instead it was one celebrity name after another, one bit of gossip after another and list after list of names of chefs and all their restaurants and if they made it or not. It was more one long dull gossip column than a book.

THERE IS GOOD SCHMUTZ AND BAD SCHMUTZ. THIS BOOK IS EITHER FICTIONAL, OR BAD SCHMUTZ. THERE ARE GLARING ERRORS TO BOOT. CONTRARY TO THE AUTHOR'S HUGE MISTAKE, THE WIDOW OF THE FAMOUS RESTAURATEUR HENRI SOULE WAS UNSUCCESSFUL IN ALL OF HER LAWSUITS TO GET PART OF HIS ESTATE. AND WHY WOULD THE AUTHOR INCESSANTLY REFER TO SOULE'S LIFE PARTNER, MRS SPALTER, AS HIS "MISTRESS", OVER AND OVER? THIS ELDERLY COUPLE SHARED THEIR LIFE AND WORK 24 HOURS A DAY EVERY YEAR. ONE REFERENCE WAS BAD ENOUGH, WHY HAMMER IT OVER AND OVER?

AND THE WORD IS NOT "MATERIZED", IT IS "MADERIZED", THAT IS, WINE THAT IS OXIDIZED DUE HEAT AND TURNED CARMEL COLORED. EVERYONE WHO DRINKS OR READS ABOUT WINES KNOWS THAT.

THE CONCENSUS OF ALL REVIEWS TO DATE ALL ECHO THE SAME BASIC SUMMARY, THIS IS SCHMUTZY WITHOUT BEING FUN.

2 out of 5 stars empty, empty.......2007-06-08

If Reichl's memoirs were a nourishing meal, then Greene's is a bag of chips. Reichl's trilogy about her life in food is ultimately about developing relationships, and discovering how to make a meaningful life.

Greene's book, in contrast, reads as a series of lists 1) foods she has eaten 2) men she has slept with 3) celebrities she has known. There is no real character development, nor any personal insights.

True, she has enjoyed amazing, sumptious meals, but to what end? There is no meaning to her life beyond the endless quest for rich meals on her employer's dime. Her sexual appetite, although clearly prodigious, leads her to make empty choice after empty choice. Some people will wish that they shared Greene's luck that allowed her to live a completely self-indulgent life. But most sensible people will be grateful that they haven't haven't wasted every moment pursuing nothing.

An empty life leads to an empty book--a bit ironic considering the title. Reichl's books, though far less sexual, are fare more sensual and satisfying.

1 out of 5 stars an insatiably smug ego.......2007-05-09

I found this so disappointing after "Garlic and Sapphires". Now Ruth maynot be entirely the lovely soft warm and cosy food writer this book presents her to be, but I am completely convinced that Gael Greene is the egotistical self-satisfied "foodie" that her writing inadvertently and occasionally advertently reveals her to be.

I found this a dull read - her sexual exploits were presented so smugly and without eroticism that I found the passages dull by the end, and so many of her foodie anecdotes (as she tells us so many times she is a foodie, just in case we didn't work it out) seem to be included just because she has done the research or recalled the restaurant and can't bear to leave it out. whether it is of interest wasn't a relevant litmus test apparently.

In fact, smugness pervades the entire book, and even her excellent work with Citymeals on Wheels doesn't reprieve the whiff of the self-satisfied, over-fed epicure she appears to be.

This book lacks the humanity of "Garlic and Sapphires" while managing to be far more intimate and revealing about the author than I think even she intended.

Avoid it.

Book Description

New York Times bestselling author Virginia Henley weaves an enchanting tale of passion and intrigue in England's Golden Age-where a woman's reckless search for adventure leads her to the man destined to claim her...

Catherine Seton Spencer, a young maiden of Queen Elizabeth's court, is cursed with impulsiveness. When she meets Patrick Hepburn, who's visiting the court after a tour of duty patrolling the Scottish borderlands, Cat thinks he's an arrogant brute-and Patrick thinks Cat's a spoiled shrew. Divided by loyalties and society, but bound by desire that drives them into each other's arms, Cat and Patrick find themselves in an intricate web of deceit and danger that threatens to topple the throne-and tear the lovers apart.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars 2/3 Ho hum, 1/3 touching.......2006-01-04

In this book we meet the lovely, willful Catherine (Cat) and the dashing, ambitious Patrick (Pat). Cat is an heiress (of course)and dress designer for Queen Elizabeth. With a deceased father and cold, distant mother who cares more for her job as Her Majesty's Wardrobe Mistress than her only child, Cat grows to be an impulsive (but lovely) young woman who strives to get attention from others via her outrageous actions. Pat's father is an exiled ex-earl (treason) whose wife went into exile with him, leaving behind their only son to fend on his own. Pat retained control of the family manor house, but nothing else, so his overriding ambition was to marry well, preferably into a title. Things somewhat change when he has a psychic vision of the lovely Cat and becomes obsessed with her. Also, the fact that she's filthy rich (and lovely) and heir to an earldom is all the reason he needs to pursue her across England and Scotland.

As with other Virginia Henley novels, the main characters are far less likable then her secondary characters. Cat's impulsiveness wears old as does Patrick's need to find a rich wife. Further, the first half of the novel is simply repetitive. I quickly grew tired of hearing how lovely and delicate Cat was. If you've tired of reading about it in this short review, guess how much worse it will be when you read it on seemingly every single page for at least half of the book. The novel is repetitive in another way - it borrows heavily from Ms. Henley's earlier novel "The Dragon and The Jewel". For example, the events that drove the characters into each others arms is nearly identical in both books. Cat even refers to Patrick as her "magic man" just as Elenor does with Simon.
The book does pick up steam towards the end, with Catherine "growing up" and showing how much love she is capable of giving. The scene between her and her childhood nurse toward the end of the book was very touching and demonstrated Cat's growing maturity.
Summary: The book is fine for a bit of light reading, but if you are pressed for time, have already read Dragon and the Jewel, or will be annoyed by the repetitive dialog, you might be better off looking for another story. If you like Ms.Henley or historical romance, you might enjoy her older novel "A Year and a Day". It is more tightly written, has a better plot and very likable characters.

3 out of 5 stars T'was Alright.......2005-05-01

When I want a good historical romance, Virginia Henley is who I usually turn to for that fix. This was not one of her best works, but it was enjoyable all the same. The characters were certainly well shaped and the plotline interesting. I especially liked the twist of Lord "Bloody" Stewart's "gift" of second sight as it added an extra bit of intrigue to the novel.

I only had one problem with the willing suspension of disbelief that most readers have to face in order to become encompassed by a work of fiction. To me, it was utterly unbelievable that our heroine made it through catching the plague and all the gruesome lovliness that came with it, and still remain pregnant!

All in all, I would recommend this title to Romance readers and Henley fans alike. However, I will always be partial to Ms. Henley's earlier works, namely (as I like to call them) the "And the...and the" series: The Pirate and the Pagan, The Falcon and the Flower, The Raven and the Rose etc.

4 out of 5 stars Virginia Henley Puts The "H" In Historicals And Hot!!!.......2005-01-04

I love Virigina Henley's historicals. You are ALWAYS guaranteed a good historical read. Her characters are always vibrant and alive and Patrick and Catherine are no exception. These two strike sparks from their first introduction and it doesn't end there. As a result it was fun to read how these two very strong willed people were able to find love between themselves without loosing that which set them apart.

Readers that might be new to Ms. Henley might be put off by the strong-willed nature of Catherine...okay, Catherine is a brat to put it mildly. But she will be tamed by her Scot. Patrick is beyond patient with her and understands her better than she understands herself. The fact that he has the capability to see her thoughts gives him the added insight he needs to love her the way she deserves. Her past has dictated the way she acts and he understands this. He sets about to gain her without killing her spirit.

With the back drop of Queen Elizabeth's court and all of the intrigue that came with this time period, fans of historical romance will be well pleased. Ms. Henley truly has a talent for transporting her reader into whatever time period or location her creative mind chooses. As a result the reader will not only be gifted with a sensual and romantic story, but they will also be given a small lesson in history.

This is one historical I have no problem recommending and doing so highly. If you're only going to read a select few authors in the historical romance genre...you would do well to add Ms. Henley.

3 out of 5 stars It grows on you gradually.......2005-01-04

I really recommend it if you like history with a litle romance because it had a great amount of historical detail. It is an entertaining read. The heroine was a little too bratty. All her VH's heroines are headstrong impulsive types but this one was annoying because she kept denying her attraction to the hero for so long. Once she started being honest with herself, she wasn't irritating. This book has grown on me. I really do like it now but at first I hated Catherine. I liked Valentina in 'Tempted' mainly because she realized that she was attracted to Ram even though she didn't like him in the beginning. Since my first review of this book I realized that VH does explain why Catherine is a litle bratty and self-centered (mother issues) so it makes more sense. As always the historical details are great. Another bonus is that there is no extreme purple prose filled sex sessions every ten pages. Also there is no domestic abuse which is a real turn off even if it is appropriate for that period.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2004-12-14

Insatiable will keep you up reading way past when you thought you would stop. The hero was strong and smart. The heroine a bit less so. Having the heroine declare over and over again how Impetuous she was got a bit tired. She had moments with children and her family like maid Maggie where she showed heart and real emotion. The mother and daughter relationship wa a treat, I would have liked to see it a bit more and see a bit of her mothers thoughts on the subject.

All in all another great read by Virginia Henley

Book Description

The Insatiable Man is the story of a college student suffering through a lingering discontent which he cannot seem to shake. The protagonist, Matt Quibley, arrives at the conclusion that the core of his unhappiness stems from his evolutionary predisposition for polygamy. Despite being in a relationship with a seemingly perfect girl, he cannot overcome his instinctual belief that life would be better for him if he were romantically involved with multiple women.

In a selfish but somewhat endearing journey, Matt attempts to overcome societal limitations by dating five women at once. He quickly learns how challenging his seemingly ideal lifestyle can be, and yet he is determined to pursue his evolutionarily predetermined rights as a male. Along the way, he picks up valuable life lessons from his zany group of comrades and a nutty professor he refers to as the Mad Scientist.

When Matt's plan goes awry, he has no one to blame but himself, and he must deal with the possibility that happiness may always be just beyond his grasp.

5 out of 5 stars Stern is insatiable!.......2007-03-22

As a self-tempting male having just finished college, I found myself nostalgic for my glory days by about page 3. I enjoyed every Casanovian characteristic that the young Quibley displayed. I chuckled at his endearing narcissism and identified well with his one track mind hell-bent on the conquest of all that is female--somewhat reminiscent of Antony's pursuit of Cleopatra, but to the fifth power. If Stern's debut has one shortcoming, it's the book's length; I would have loved a few more lurid chapters. All in all, 5 big stars for a novella that packs punch after mean punch.

5 out of 5 stars In a Perfect Male World. . . ........2007-03-08

A few hours with Adam Stern's novella, The Insatiable Man, and I now understand what men really want. I'm not that young, and am the mother of three boys, but I thought I "got it!" With his Salingeresque style and hilarious wit, Stern captures the mind of the well-meaning, yet duplicitous young man in search of, well, non-stop fun; and this book is, well, non-stop fun! Stern's story telling skills are impressive. Sit back, look back and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly revelatory, Intrinsically entertaining.......2007-03-07

In a postmodern Dickensian prose, Stern strikes all the right notes with The Insatiable Man. By the stroke of Stern's stunningly accurate first person narration, the novella succeeds as a wryly coy depiction of the all-too-familiar American collegiate male aesthetic. Never before has a first time author so ebulliently and effervescently captured a mood, emotion, or incontrovertible reality in this manner. Add a star if you've ever had the best sex of your life with the best girlfriend of your life and yet you still can't stop flirting with the girl behind the counter at the bookstore.

He lives the hard knock life for real until he gets popped and has a do a bid. Terelle plays the role of his "down chick" holding him down in jail. She accepts all of his collect calls, buys him expensive jeans and sneakers, and didn't give his p**** away. She worked two jobs so that she could have a apartment for him to come home to and patiently awaited his return.

Well, Marquis comes home and just like her friend warned her, the things he told her in jail were just jailhouse promises and he starts cheating again like the dog he always was. After Terelle sticks her neck out to get him hired at the nursing home she works at he catches the eyes of many of her messy female coworkers. He was handsome, rugged, and possessed a huge D*** that couldn't go unnoticed. One eye in particular was Kai Montgomery, the wealthy half-white adopted child of a rich white doctor. She was beautiful, classy, and deranged; a fatal attraction type chick. Marquis didn't that he would pay dearly for the rough d*** he gave her in exchange for lavish gifts and the privilege of wheeling her Benz, and Kai suffers the wrath of a black woman scorned. This book is GOOD. Cop it now before they sell out. Remember: Everything that glitters is definitely not gold.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books I've Ever Read.......2006-07-09

This is my first time reading one of Ms. Hobbs novels. I must say that she has scored a winner with this one. I couldn't put the book down. I was up reading until 3am. The characters are well developed. Kai is the character that you love to hate. She's arrogant, snobbish, selfish, and sexually insatiable. Terelle has made her dreams of a better life tied around MArquise. Both women are obsessed with this man. MArquise is a player. he's selfish, but meets his match in Kai. There's one thing he can't resist when it comes to Kai...sex. The story ends in an explosive climax, with a surprise twist. I would highly recommend to anyone. I can't wait to read more of Ms. Hobbs work.

For the past ten years, Nigel Weatherby-Smythe has gone out of his way to be the perfect butler ... loyal, trustworthy, and discreet. But his adored employer — the internationally famed portrait painter Jacqueline di Fidelio — suddenly finds herself in hot water with the IRS, the FBI, and two dangerous, attractive men. And Nigel discovers his duties expanding in a most unexpected way....

As Madam jets from one glamorous playground to the next, Nigel turns spy and protector to fend off those who would do Jacqueline wrong. For in Nigel’s opinion, his irresistibly alluring employer’s torturous past has rendered her as unstable as a house of cards.

Yet when one of Jacqueline’s simpering socialite clients is murdered — and then another mysterious death follows while Jacqueline is on the scene — Nigel begins to wonder if he has it all wrong. Is the woman to whom he has dedicated his life simply an innocent victim of careless, callous men? Or is she a heartless manipulator whose mask of black Prada and pearls hides the tortured secrets of a ruthless killer?

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing..........2007-03-08

This book was disappointing overall, although I enjoyed much of the dialogue. I found the two main characters pretty sleazy and ended the book thinking both of them were capable of just about anything bad! However, I'll continue to read and enjoy Ms. Kellogg's Kick Keswick series - those are great!

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2003-08-23

I am a fan of the Lilly Bennett series, but I enjoyed this book much, much more. A wild ride, with laugh out loud funny scenes, and stirring emotions from start to finish.

    Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars An Insatiable Read!.......2002-09-13

To find a book like Insatiable, written by Marne Davis Kellogg, is like discovering a special treat. From cover to cover, Insatiable is delicious. With vivid, memorable characters, Insatiable enchants the reader, so they'll feel they are in the middle of a journey ... one they won't want to end!

5 out of 5 stars Another masterpiece from Kellogg.......2002-01-06

Ms. Kellogg wows her readers again with her latest. As a long-time fan of her Lily Bennett series, Insatiable was quite a change. But, Kellogg pulled it off very well--like all her other books, it reads quickly and keeps your attention throughout. Kellogg has an unusual knack for writing novels about the rich that are classy and elegant--not gaudy and overbearingly romantic. I look forward to her next bestseller!

    4 out of 5 stars A Wild Read.......2001-04-13

What a ride of a read! INSATIABLE was quite a reading change from one of my favorite mystery series, the Lilly Bennett series and the author Marne Davis Kellogg. Ms. Kellogg had written an entertaining novel with all the quirks of mystery, suspense, romance, exoctic locales, and a wide range of characters. How could anyone not laugh with Nigel as he very seriously studies his medical journal for symptoms of his latest "fatal disease". His devotion to Madam and the situations they join or face leads to a breathless finale. I thought I had figured out the ending but mercy was I wrong - and a little bit right! Try this title, I believe you will enjoy the story. This loyal Lilly Bennett fan applauds Ms. Kellogg for a writing job well done. I await the next installment in her writing career.

        Product Description

"Radicalism was the sword of liberty." --Garet Garrett. Old Right libertarian Garet Garrett (1878-1954) practiced journalism as it's practiced too rarely these days -- weaving an intimate knowledge of present affairs, the past that paved the way, and the ethical and economic principles that illuminate these. In previous volumes, Bruce Ramsey brought together Garrett's Salvos Against The New Deal and his critiques of FDR's push to bring America into the Second World War in the years before Pearl Harbor (Defend America First). This expansive new anthology offers more than two dozen articles on matters foreign and domestic from the rest of his work, ranging the entire span of Garrett's 27-year career as journalist and critic. Many of the pieces evocatively limn the receding of an America in which citizens expected to make their own way... and the emergence of an America in which we often expect others to make our way for us (and not just during catastrophes). The two poles are aptly represented in "The Dawn of Steel" and "The Desert Reclaimed." The first article recalls how steel-makers hammered out their industry by dint of sheer will and ingenuity. The second shows how, as early as the 1920s, the government's subsidizing of frontier-conquest (!) encouraged settlers to become ever more irresponsible and dependent. Garrett thus illustrates that there is only one way to learn self-reliance... by being self-reliant. Ramsey notes that although much that was bad in the New Deal has "washed away," Garrett reminds us that "we didn't have to accept those things" which did become absorbed into the American system. Perhaps these recovered writings will also show us how to recover what we have lost.

          Book Description

Pedro Juan Gutierrez exploded onto the literary landscape three years ago with his bestselling novel, Dirty Havana Trilogy. Hugely acclaimed for its honest depiction of a Cuban capital characterized by sleaze, sex, poverty and hedonism, in The Insatiable Spiderman we see the return of its anti-hero, who is again prowling the streets of Havana.

Pedro Juan's relationship with his wife, Julia, is in terminal decline, and the trappings of domestic bliss hold no charms for this most restless and predatory of men. Our narrator's interests lie elsewhere: in the infinite possibilities of a chaotic Caribbean city and the chancers, artists and prostitutes who roam the streets.

In his inimitably uncompromising and exhilarating style, Pedro Juan Gutierrez again takes the reader on a journey into the underbelly of contemporary Havana—a world of easy sex, hard drinking and humorous anecdote that will be all too recognizable to the Gutierrez connoisseur.
