It's an ok book..........2007-02-23
...But NOT for beginner artists:S
The book itself is pretty cool with lots of characters and pretty pictures to look at. That alone, is ALOT of inspiration:)
BUT.... And this is the bad part about the book... I'm not learning much from it:( There are very little hints on HOW to actually draw something. I'm not advanced enough for this book as i need step-by-step guides, wich this book does not contain much of. Sadly:(
It's probably a really great book for the more advanced artists, but i cannot recomend this book for beginner artists like myself... I'm sorry. I also cannot recomend any other books as i haven't bought that many yet. But by all means, if you really WANT this book, the pictures in it makes it worth buying:) Inspiration is also an important part on your way to becoming a master artist:) And besides, the more people who buy it, the bigger the chances gets for a follow-up book:) Wich will probably be better for us non-professionals:p
Freak'n Fantastic.......2006-05-10
What a great book! I do furry art and needed some pointers on how to draw animal people forms. This is the only book I've ever seen that explains how to do it. Easy and precise instructions on all types of animal people, cats, dogs, turtles, bears, etc. You name it, it is in here. It teaches anatomy and really helped me with animal type legs with three joints. I like Steve's art, but Brett Booth is the master! Book was worth it just to stare at his fabulous characters. Please, please, please, do another book just like this one, but with more cartoon furry type art.
Some good ideas poorly executed.......2006-01-20
When I found this book I was overjoyed at its subject matter and I was soon whisked away by the beautiful pencil and colour renderings of the wonderful anthropomorphic folk. However I was soon placed right back down where I had started and I soon realised that this book hadn't in fact taught me anything as a skilled artist.
This book has huge potential, the subject has massive scope, but this book doesn't. Its woeful attempt at what should be the biggest part of this book, the anatomy (human AND animal), left me feeling like the author had missed the point. I was expecting to be shown some detailed examples of how to build up the shapes of animal faces (a tricky subject), I was expecting to learn how to easily construct paws, claws, fur and scales but they too were all given minimal coverage. Maybe I was expecting too much? Although books like "Drawing & Painting Fantasy Figures" by Cowan manages to meet high expectations and is brimming with ideas.
When you get past the comparable pictures in this book you will find the writing poor and uninformative towards the artwork, and its ability to teach you how and why to draw the characters this way, particularly slack. I would suggest that any amateur artist should fill their head first with knowledge from Hogarth's Anatomy books, and to study and learn how to draw animals as well (which this book remarkably neglects to suggest you do!!) Other than the excellent artwork, which I must compliment, this book was very disappointing.
Great idea book.......2006-01-19
I bought this book and refer to it continually when I need ideas or inspiration. It is not a traditional how to draw book in that there isn't step by step instructions on how to draw each "animal head person" in the book, but guidelines. The expectation, I think, is that the reader will practice putting together the basic shapes and learn from the abundance of illustrations. This would be a good book to pair with another drawing book. A lot of the poses are superhero style.
There isn't a huge focus on basic drawing skills; for younger readers, Lee Hammond covers these well in her drawing books. Older readers might want to check out "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain".
What a freak of a book!.......2005-12-23
First of all, these other reviews most be the age of children because this book does not help you what so ever in the art field. This book consist of about a handle full of pages including (one page of anotomy that makes me laugh, as if you can fit everything on anotomy into one page) and tons of "Pictures". I say pictures because the text next to the obvious drawings teaching you how to draw the animals has captions of Steve Miller talking.
As if I care what he thinks of an elephant-man. Tell me how to draw the damn thing. Point out things that are hard to do such as his trunk or tusks. No instead he adds his own two bit commentary.
As far as art goes this book contains little to none. It's mostly full colored pictures by Brett Booth. This book is a picture book or an inspiration book, because it's sure not a drawing book! Sometimes the pictures contain one to two frame figures.
Trust me if you still want this book after this review. Do like I did buy it for less than 10 bucks because honestly its not worth much more than that. The only reason why I gave it a 3 is because of the artwork insteas, otherwise it would've been a 1.
Great for kids under 13.

In-depth visual reference for every artist of war comics
Top-gun artists from DC/Wildstorm
War offers compelling subject matter for artists: life-or-death battles, conflict, bravery. For sixty years, war comics have attracted the biggest names in the industry, including Jack Kirby, Will Eisner, Harvey Kurtzman, and Wally Wood. Gung Ho! How to Draw Fantastic Military Comics offers an introduction to war comics, then goes on to page after page of essentials for drawing accurate military personnel (including infantry, Navy SEALs, Green Berets, and more); military vehicles (jeeps to MI-A1 tanks and beyond), military planes (F-14s to stealth planes), military boats (rafts, submarines, aircraft carriers, more), and military armory (knives, pistols, antiaircraft guns, and many others). Featuring the work of a team of DC/Wildstorm comic-book top guns, Gung Ho! Is essential for any artist who wants to be fully prepared for battle.

GungHo.......2007-07-04
Kinda of old stuff easily seen online..really didnt do anything to inspire me into drawing something new..pretty old weapons systems and up to date..waste of money if your looking for new ideas..best part of the book was the cover
Gung Ho Go!.......2006-02-18
This is a fun and inspiring how to draw book. There is a good mix of real and fantasy type characters and weapons. If you like drawing military characters like in video games like Rainbow Six and Metal Gear Solid or in comics like GI Joe or Sigma 6 this is the book for you. There is a real nice section on guns and lots of helpful tips for drawing vehicles. The characters are slightly idealized, but not so far to be unrecognizable as real soldiers.
Gung Not... So So artist reference.......2006-02-09
If you wish to learn to draw G.I. Joe and other comic-book style characters Gung Ho! Is a book you might want to check out. The author gives a brief explanation of various military concepts (Navy, Marines, Diver), and then draws a single character in an action style pose.
Unfortunately, there isn't anything particularly outstanding or useful in this guide. I was quite frankly hoping for a bit more detail in the various uniforms, and a few more tips on things such as military haircuts, and a tad more realism in the artwork. Some turnarounds would've been nice. (The basic anatomical guides on page 24 were too exaggerated to be useful as the male soldier is drawn so overdeveloped he looks like he-man). Many of the poses are extremely exaggerated, the heads disproportionate (the Navy sailor with the HUGE head comes to mind), and the Lara Croft style Intelligence agent and the ninja looking characters. Sigh.
Highlights: Loved the dogs, what a pleasant surprise! and the marine illo was good.
3 stars. I don't think I'll see myself referring to this book for artist tips, but it's not bad enough to get rid of either as the hardware in the back might be useful at some later date.

A Fanastic Art Book from start to finish.......2006-07-11
Here is a very accurate review of this book:
Fantastic Art of Arthur Suydam
Review by Geoff Willmetts
Unless you followed the magazine 'Heavy Metal' in its early days, you might be forgiven for missing the art of Arthur Suydam although it was primarily he and Rich Corben who made up the American contributors therein.
How to define his work is best achieved by scanning the work within these pages. Suydam is at home with pen and ink as he is with a paintbrush and can do a turn from 'Alien' to 'Wind In The Willows' to super-heroes and his various humour pieces shows marked flexibility and diversity of style. His art is something that needs to be seriously looked at to be appreciated rather than just glancing through it. Suydam is full of surprises, in that, just when you think he works with a dark palate, he can then turn around and do paintings loaded with colour.
This book covers the range of Arthur Suydam's work from being allowed to paint or illustrate, how and what he liked, to commissioned pieces for adult and children's books. Certainly, you'd wish you could see more of his work, let alone see them issued in the UK. Even once read, there is always a need to have another browse to see if there was anything missed the first time. It's a great book to have for that rainy afternoon when you need something to inspire you or left on the table to show others as there's something here for everyone. When you get other highly respected artists praising your work, then you know you're in good company.
Technical Excellence, Derivitive Subjects.......2006-06-14
Arthur Sydam is the best of the Frank Frazetta imitators. His work is technically superb and Suydam appears equally (highly) skilled in watercolor, oil, and pen and ink. Anyone who enjoys the work of Frazetta will find Suydam's work interesting and fruitful to study.
Suydam is probably best known for his contributions to "art" comix magazines like HEAVY METAL and EPIC in the late '70s/early '80s. Readers should be aware that Suydam is also heavily influenced by artist Berni Wrightson and the "underground" sensibilities of artists such as Richard Corben and Vaughn Bode; consequently a lot of the material collected here evidences a fairly stereotypical "twisted sense of humor."
Although I admire Suydam's abilities I have a couple of problems with this book. The descriptive text is composed of ludicrously over-the-top praise of Suydam and a rather original view of comix history. The volume is padded with a miscellany of examples of artwork that supposedly influenced Suydam, without presenting the works by Frazetta (and Wrightson) that are Suydam's direct inspiration. Also, some Suydam illustrations appear more than once!?!
HEAVY METAL and EPIC fizzled for obvious reasons; they relied on soft-porn and "a sick sense of humor" to carry material that was consistently tasteless, self-indulgent, and shallow. There are echoes of that in the subject matter here. However the occasional moments when juxtaposed absurdities resulted in unexpected Rorshach meanings are here too. What can you say about a sequence of images that show the Wind in the Willows characters paddling through a Frazetta-esque jungle, only to find the otter-child being piped to sleep with a dreamy lullaby - by Frazetta's Death Dealer!?!

Pretty good,.. But.............2004-05-27
Dont get me wrong, there are 17 stories in this book and truthfully only a handful really stink, the rest are in the 3 - 4 star category (particularly the stories about Kang, Dr. Doom, Venom, Mephisto & ? at the end). However... I'd have preffered to see stories about the Green Goblin/Hobgoblin, Galactus, Annihilus, Kingpin, Doc Oc, Red Skull or Sabretooth (not one story involves spiderman, Daredevil or the FF another letdown), rather than waste stories on obscure villains like d'spare, nightmare & company.
Marvel out did themselves.......1998-09-13
its great all the stories were very well written however childs play started off kind of slow but turned out pretty good.and the twist at the end of the defiant ones was great.

A decent book i think:).......2007-02-23
This book is not that bad, but it may not be suited for you if you have NEVER drawn something before:S
It has a lot of step by step guides and contains a good variety of subjects to draw. Hailing from vampires, zombies, vixens to werewolves:) This book is easily one of my favorites even if i cannot give it a top score grade... The reason why, is because it IS a bit advanced. Even if the step-by-step guides are somewhat easy to follow, if you don't have "pencil feeling", then you'll screw up a lot:S Belive me:p
But that may be just me:S It's not a bad book at all, so i can reccomend this one:) Buy it, you won't be dissapointed:)
Decent.......2007-01-22
It was a decent book, I think it could have shown a few more steps on how to draw everything but not too shabby overall.
Not very complete.......2006-11-10
It's a nice book but you need to have and idea in painting because it's no so basic
awesome.......2005-09-01
this book is a good book if you want to draw scary skeletons and stuff like that. in my opinion, i thought it was cool because it has an interview plus art from Vince Locke ( the guy who does cannibal corpes's artwork among many other).
Scared, but in a good way.......2004-12-11
I saw this book in the store and debated buying it for my twelve year old son. It is a little gruesome and the women are quite buxom. I finally decided to order it from Amazon and see what my son thought. Well he loves it! Now he draws nothing but werewolves and zombies fighting each other, I think that is a good thing(?). It is a nice follow up from author Steve Miller, my son got his book Freaks! As well so sooner or later he will probably start drawing zombies fighting cat people. I'm tempted to actually try my hand at drawing some of the characters for Halloween decorations (tempted, but I'll probably just end up making blow up copies at Kinko's.) All in all a nice book for children (and parents-lol) not prone to nightmares.

A "Greatest Hits" from one of the Greatest.......2005-06-27
Luis Royo is my favorite artist at all. I've met him 13 years ago in the CIMOC covers with that beautiful and explosive women he paints and I think no one other can impress me like he did.
This big HC book is a large review of his work from the last 20 years, with many zoomed images to show the techniques and the expression "his" women has.
Among many european and spanish artists, he has a big name in this area.
Beautiful book.......2005-02-09
I found this book to be beautifully produced. Yes,it is made up of images that have been published before, but presented in a different way. The text gives new perspective on the images, and the art is as breathtaking as ever. If you are only going to buy one Royo book, I'd reccommend buying this one. If you have his other books, while this one is well worth the price, I would say look through it first, if possible.
A Big Disappoint.......2004-08-24
I'm probably the biggest fan of Luis Royo, and was very excited to see a best of book.
Why am I disappointed with this book? Because almost all of the images here are zoomed and extremely cropped. the zoomed pics show more detail than avaialable in Royo's other books, but no way does this make up for the what's missing from the complete pieces. Its more of a highlights of Royo than a true best of.
To add even more salt to the wound, this book contains alot of sketches of the final pieces, found in conceptions I & II.
Those Should of been excluded since theres no way they could be considered "best of".
If anyone is interested in buying this book I recommend you see it in person first. It's really a shame to see his art so edited and clipped. If not for the 2 or 3 new images found only in this book I would return it or sell it.
If youre looking for a good collection of the best of Royo, for the same price as this book, you could get his 3 first books Women, Malefic, & Secrets.

Excellent.......2005-01-28
Sumerak is one of the hottest young writes in the comic industry right now. While not as good as his "Guardians" series, this is still solid work. I wouldn't be suprised if all of his earlier stuff ends up being quite valuable once he becomes big in a few years.

Customer Reviews:
GREAT FIGURES!.......2006-11-15
Watson Guptill Continues their fine series of comic art instruction books with their latest invaluable tome "Zap! How to Draw Fantastic Sci-Fi Comic" by Bryan Baugh. The book features hundreds of B & W and color illustrations geared to the beginning or intermediate comic book artist.
I applaud the book for beginning with a history of Sci-Fi comics and illustration as this form of art even dates back to the pre-comic book days if one considers newspaper comic strips and pulp magazine illustrations which to this day continue to be vastly underrated and undervalued. Baugh takes a look at pioneers like Alex Raymond and his Flash Gordon work, Basil Wolverton's Spacehawk, and EC Comics' legendary Al Williamson and Wally Wood. The book also features a short, but entertaining interview with Williamson.
The instructional portion starts with drawing all sorts of Sci-Fi characters from astronauts to space pirates and space queens to space zombies, all with great tips on getting the figure started and finished. Next up comes great robots, everything from Gundam type Mecha to 50's style Robbie the Robot-like bots, as well as cyborgs, androids, and transforming robots.
The final and longest chapter is on aliens and this is where Baugh really shines. He even comments that drawing weird life forms from other planets is the most enjoyable aspect of drawing sci-fi comics. Baugh truly shows off his imagination with a bizarre host of strange and monstrous alien beings, and not just clones of things you've seen a million times either. There are insectoid alients, octopoid aliens, reptillain aliens, and countless others. The theme in this chapter is to just let your creativity run wild and see what you come up with. There's really no way to do something wrong.
My only complaint about the book is that it strictly displays figures and, to a lesser extent, heads. There's nothing here that really covers comic story-telling or drawing in a panel format. That would have been nice. Still, with contributing artists like Bernie Wrightson, the book is very enjoyable and gorgeously produced.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best stories in the series!.......2006-06-17
If you have not read earlier volumes in the MYTH series, this book of two volumes will not be as appealing to you. If you are familiar with the series, then read on!
This book continues the pattern started in the last book of having two volumes in one book that covers two different stories. The first one "M.Y.T.H. inc. In Action" takes the viewpoint of Guido as the story teller. This book is by far the funniest one in this series! The hilarious mis-adventures of Guido and Nunzio, coupled with the complete inanity of the situations that they find themselves in are absolutely top notch!
This story takes place during the time that Skeeve was on Perv trying to find Aahz. The team decides to take care of the Queen Hemlock situation on Klah by themselves! One thing leads to another and the team decides to split up. Guido and Nunzio join the Posilltum army while Tananda, Chumley, Gleep, and Massha get involved in other things. Since this book is told from Guido's point of view, it is not surprising that we do not see much of the other guys. This is a change from the previous M.Y.T.H. Inc. book in which each character essentially told a short story.
Anyway, Guido and Nunzio get involved in a group of recruits who happen to have insect names. They meet Bee, Hyram Flie, Shubert Flie, Spyder, etc. A good example of the kind of humor that is all over these books is that Hyram prefers to be called Hy, while his brother Shubert prefers to be called Shu. So, we have Hy Flie and Shu Flie!!! (groan)
Guido and Nunzio quickly ascertain that they have to make sure the recruits pass through basic training so they can get going with their mission. To do so, they take over the leadership of the group and as a result, get promoted. Since Guido puts on this fake Italo-Gangster type of talk, we aretreated to lots of "situationals" in which their mob past is helpful. Guido actually manages to get promoted at least three times before he quits in disgust!
The descriptions of how this group of misfits tries to screw up the army - which is already screwed up - and how they manage to instead make things altogether better caused immense laughing bouts with this veteran!
All's well that end well and the story has Skeeve, Aahz, and Pookie converge on Queen Hemlock just as the rest of the crew does. And that transitions us to the next book.
The second book "Sweet Myth-tery of Life" is told from Skeeve's viewpoint. He comes back with Aahz and Pookie to Klah and finds his group but also finds himself in trouble. You see, Queen Hemlock has decided that either Skeeve marries her and becomes her consort and produces heirs, or she will abdicate and make him the King. Since he has already had bad experiences in being the King, he rejects that proposal. But then, he has to decide if he wants to become the Queen's consort or not.
Now, Skeeve has had many life-changing experiences, but none of them have prepared him for what to do about all the nubile women throwing themselves at his feet; Queen Hemlock we already discussed, and all readers of the series know that Bunny is tremendously in love with Skeeve; Tananda comes to the realization that she looks at Skeeve more as a younger brother; but we are introduced to Cassandra who happens to be a Vampire as another potential love interest.
Skeeve is completely ignorant of what the women around him want and while he has some normal male human reactions to all these gorgeous ladies, has no idea of what to do about it. The story line continues to twist and turn and Skeeve finds himself in all kinds of trouble but eventually he manages to resolve his feelings for Luanne and gets kicked in the [...] by Hugh Badaxe and finally sorts through what he wants to do. And, finally, he manages to resolve the Queen Hemlock situation.
This happens at the final chapter of the book but then, as he happily walks arouns, the author throws us a plot twist that is so maddening and is so transparent of a hook to get us to come back for more that I practically screamed!
In other words, in addition to the humor, we now have a cliff hanger ending that makes me want to dive into my bookshelf and dig out the next volume!
Highly recommended!!!
Avoid At All Costs.......2005-11-12
By the time these books had come out, Robert Asprin had stopped making his Myth books self-contained stories. They were, instead unapologetically episodic, with long, meandering storylines in each book ending in a cliff-hanger meant to lure you into the next book. It was a cheap device used to snag the die-hard fans and new readers who might not know any better.
Its hard to think of these books as anything more than a marketting tool, since all the originality and humor present in the first few books of this series had long ago been burned away. Its like Robert Asprin is just noodling around at the keyboard, tossing off ideas to fulfill a contractual obligation. There is no joy in these books at all. At best they present over-used cliches, at worst they are tedious beyond belief.
two great myth books in one.......2003-12-20
Asprin's Myth series combines traditional fantasy with humor and satire. He gives us multiple characters that are believable and you grow to love very quickly. Many authors couldn't handle juggling this many primary characters (not to mention the whole slew of secondary characters) and this complicated of a series. It's myth-fastic.
Two epic tales - with a twist.......2003-05-14
This collection of two books by Robert Asprin were a few of my favorites. Without giving the book away, let me tell you that this book doesn't disappoint in comparisson to his earlier books. The characters still deliver the same impact they did in his past books and they keep the same personalities
The plotline twists and weaves and I love how all the books seem to follow the pattern that as soon as one problem is solved, a whole new set of problems emerge. This book promises to be a delightful sequel to the already memorable series of books.
Two Asprin Gave Me a Headache.......2003-01-31
To begin with, I really like a lot of Robert Asprin's previous works. I've just reread both the Myth and Phule series. I love the quirky characters and humor present in both. I was really looking forward to continuing my voyage into the wonderfully amusing world created by this talented author.
The first of the two stories in this double (M.Y.T.H Inc. in Action) is excellent. It is light, amusing, original, and just generally a good read. If you've enjoyed the previous books in the series, you will certainly like this one.
Unfortunately, the second story (Sweet Myth-tery of Life) is not at all up to the mark. It is heavy, not at all amusing, and all in all just not worth reading.
That said, if you can't find M.Y.T.H. Inc. in Action as a single, it is still worth picking up this double book in order to read it.
