You know the saying: Give a man (or woman) a fish, and you give him dinner; teach a man (or woman) to fish and he'll have dinner for the rest of his life. The always entertaining and instructional "... for Dummies" series reeled in witty outdoors writer Peter Kaminsky to keep the rest of us fed--as in food for the table and food for thought--with this step-by-step guide to pretty much every right and obtuse angle on angling. As with all the books in the series, Fishing is filled with punchy advice, plenty of diagrams, and a series of Top 10 lists that should bag aspiring fishers hook, line, and sinker.

Book Description

No one can promise that you will catch fish all the time. Fish, after all, would just as soon never taste a hook or feel the sizzle of a frying pan. For as long as we have been catching fish, fish have also been outsmarting us. "That's why they call it fishing and not catching," goes the old saying. This book will help you fish, and it will help you catch, too. No matter how much you know, there are still a couple of tricks that even the oldest angler can pick up.

For those of you who have never fished, you will find enough in this book to get you started. You don't have to learn everything all at once. If you are already an angler, there are plenty of tips and techniques that you can turn to right away without going through the basics all over again. And you master anglers will also find this book a handy reference for all kinds of fishing questions.

Once you have a few basic pointers, fishing is as easy as falling off a log (which is something you want to avoid, as the splash will scare the fish). Fishing For Dummies will show you how to orchestrate all of your equipment into a fine-tuned fish-catching machine. You'll soon know all about

Fishing is a great joy and a lifetime sport. You will find that there are successful fishing days and unsuccessful fishing days, but there is no such thing as a bad fishing day. This book can make fishing easier and more rewarding for you every time you pick up your rod and reel.

1 out of 5 stars Fishing for Dummies !!Mini!!.......2007-10-02

I feel that it is my duty to help bring down the review score that this book is getting. some people are obviously mistaking this book for another. The mini is a waste of paper. A book like this is an abuse of freedom of speech. How should a book about "how to fish" not give any information on how to fish. Robbery is against the law; and that's what this is. The best part of this book is the advice of bringing a sandwich with you. You'll need it when you catch no fish. I suggest getting any other book on the subject if you wish to learn about tying knots, casting, bait, etc. The purchaser of this book is sure to be dissatisfied at any cost. I guess there is a lot to be said in the title "Fishing for DUMMIES (MINI)".. Maybe I was a "little stupid" to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Fishing for Dummies is a must have book........2007-08-07

I recommend this book for the beginning angler. Well written and very informative. The book covers all elements needed to enjoy fishing and to catch fish. Love the book!!!

1 out of 5 stars This mini book is usless as fishing book for beginners or any level.......2007-07-24

This book is not even useful for a reference. It talks about the anatomy of the hook; but no mention of the sizes or when to use these different sizes. It doesn't even mention how to tie on a hook.

This book mentions to take a thermometer with you to check the water temperature, since fish bite at certain temperatures; it fail to state these temperatures.

The diagrams are very few and confusing with not much text in reference to the diagrams in many cases.

No mention in the book of how to tie the line to hook or lure, where to attach float and/or sinker. No mention on how to use lures and for what fish.

The "search inside this book" feature on Amazon showed a lot more information than contained in this book and therefore was misleading.

If you know nothing about fishing and are just starting out, you are better served by asking the sales clerk in the sports department at a department store about the type of gear you will need and how it all comes together and what are the popular baits or lures they sell. You will get a whole lot more useful fishing information this way than from this book.

A fishing book which looked very useful for the beginner and as a reference is "Fishing Basics" Fishing Basics. I ordered this book from Amazon and I shall post a review after I read it.

1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware- The Mini Version of this book is useless.......2007-07-21

I cannot believe that the Fishing For Dummies Mini is getting the positive reviews that it is getting. People must be referencing the the original 300+ page Fishing For Dummies. The mini is approximately a 2 inch by 2 inch book that has the typesetting of a full-size book. If it was printed on full-size paper, I couldn't imagine it being over 20 pages in length. The Search Inside feature on the website is misleading because it is letting you look at the full-size book, not the mini that is offered here. I was very disappointed when this book arrived. It would make a good gag gift for a fishing enthusiast because it of its size. Please be careful and get the full size book as the mini covers pretty much very very basic items. If you have a small kid who has a limited attention span, this might be decent to introduce them to fishing. Otherwise, the book will probably be tossed to the side and you might not be able to find it again because it is so tiny. This was not the quality of the Dummies book that I have been accustomed to.

5 out of 5 stars Heavy Power, Fast Action.......2006-12-11

Of the several fishing guides I have read, this is the best. It contains quite a lot of information and is easy to digest. This book covers pretty much all areas of fishing, which is pretty amazing. The one short coming of the book is its lack of depth about specific fish, but this is completely understandable since that would probably serve to confuse more than inform and would require many more pages. The knot diagrams are not the best: the illustrations are not that good and are often two pages later than the instructions.

Book Description

Pennsylvania has one of the highest per capita populations of flyfishers in the country, and much of the sport's early history in America came from this wonderful state. In this 525 page guidebook, the ninth in our series of Flyfisher's Guides, veteran angling author Dave Wolf highlights the best flyfishing opportunities throughout the state in great detail with over 90 detailed maps and 60+ hatch charts. Previous guidebooks on Pennsylvania have invariably focused only on trout. In this comprehensive book, Wolf covers all those trouting opportunities in great detail and all the great warmwater flyfishing as well. Rivers like the Susquehanna have long been known among the best smallmouth bass waters in the country, and flyrodders throughout the mid-Atlantic states annually fish this river and many of Pennsylvania's countless rivers and streams for trout, bass, and other species. This is also a true travel guide, as well, covering where to stay, restaurants, fly shops and sporting goods stores and much more.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Effort.......2006-06-21

I've had this book for several years and I've found it to be a very useful resource. The hatch charts are extremely helpful, especially for trout anglers. While the author made a better than average attempt to cover the warmwater opportunities in the Keystone State, for the most part only the most well known sites were covered. Certainly Pennsylvania has some world famous trout streams, but the variety and quality of our warmwater fisheries is truly extraordinary. Some of the streams that were covered specifically for the trout they hold probably offer better bass fishing over most of their length. Trout centered thinking is far too prevalent in the fly fishing community and as a result this sort of overemphasis on trout is typical of many fly fishing guides. Indeed, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is guilty of killing thousands of trout annually by stocking them in waters so warm they are almost certain to all die by Memorial Day. I know that Mr. Wolf is a skilled and avid warmwater fly fisher. I hope in the future he will update this guide and give our warmwater fisheries the coverage they deserve.

3 out of 5 stars flyfisher's Guide to Pennsylvania by Dave Wolf.......2002-04-28

If you are looking for a book to give you general knowledge on better known trout fishing streams in Pennsylvania, then this book will meet your needs. Unfortunately, the author does not do a good job of covering remote streams in many parts of the state that are excellent producing streams and beautiful places to fish. I was especially disappointed in his lack of coverage of streams in McKean and Warren County. I would not recommend this book to an avid Pennsylvania fisherman. The book is adequate for an out-of-state fisherman who is looking to fish some of the more popular streams in PA.

5 out of 5 stars WOLF PUBLISHES NEW BOOK.......2000-04-21

"It's a comprehensive and exhaustively researched offering and a fine addition to Wolf's career in helping Pennsylvania anglers better know and respect their home waters. With its detailed maps and hatch charts, it also will help traveling anglers find and fish their way around the Keystone State."

5 out of 5 stars This Guy Knows How to Catch Fish.......2000-04-21

Dave Wolf is "a man who just may go down in angling history as one of the state's pre-eminent fishing bums." Flyfisher's Guide to Pennsylvania "is a 500+ page, region-by-region directory to fly fishing in the Keystone State. You get stream-by-stream descriptions, summaries of Approved (stocked) waters, Wild Trout streams, and a list of fly shops. There's also a rundown on the major cities in each region listing accommodations, restaurants, ... even hospitals, in case you lose a Woolly Bugger in your earlobe. Please note that this is not just a trout book. Thanks in large part to Dave's love affair with the Susquehanna River, there's plenty of information on the state's warmwater fisheries. ...A book like this is a prodigious effort when you're wrapping your arms around a 29-million-acre state."

5 out of 5 stars All Kinds of Great Fishing Information.......2000-04-21

"Over the years, a number of books have been written offering insight to the best places where (fishing) opportunity can be found. However, none is as complete as recently released, Dave Wolf's, Flyfishers Guide to Pennsylvania. This book is complete and provides tidbits of information overlooked in the past, but not in this book. The book can not only serve as a fishing guide, but for travel as well, covering where to stay, restaurants, fly shops and much more."

British businessman and dedicated angler Paul Torday has found a way to combine a novel about fishing and all that it means with a satire involving politics, bureaucrats, the Middle East, the war in Iraq, and a sheikh who is really a mystic. Torday makes it all work in a most convincing way using memos, interviews, e-mails, and letters in clever juxtaposition.

Dr. Alfred Jones is a fisheries scientist in Great Britain who is called upon to find a way to introduce salmon into the desert in Yemen. The Yemeni sheikh will spare no expense to see this happen. He says:

It would be a miracle of God if it happened. I know it... If God wills it, the summer rains will fill the wadis... and the salmon will run the river. And then my countrymen... all classes and manner of men--will stand side by side and fish for the salmon. And their natures, too, will be changed. They will feel the enchantment of this silver fish... and then when talk turns to what this tribe said or that tribe did... then someone will say, "Let us arise, and go fishing."

Such is the sheikh's vision. He tells Alfred: "Without faith, there is no hope. Without faith, there is no love." Alfred has no religious faith and has been mired in a loveless marriage for twenty years, so these words seem fantastic to him.

Alfred and Sheikh Muhammad connect immediately through their mutual love of fishing, despite Alfred's misgivings about the viability of the project. The Prime Minister's flack man tells Alfred that he must persevere and succeed because Great Britain needs some positive connection to the Middle East, something other than a failing, flailing war. These kinds of political alliances are always shaky at best, and when things start to go sideways, allies have a way of disappearing. Alfred soldiers on, with the help of the lovely Harriet, Sheikh Muhammad's land agent, and the project is readied for opening day, when the Sheikh and the Prime Minister will have a 20-minute photo op.

All of the faith and good will in the world cannot overcome the forces ranged against them, bringing tragedy to everyone involved. Despite all, Alfred's interior life is changed immeasurably. He says in the end: "I believe in it, because it is impossible." --Valerie Ryan

Book Description

Dr. Alfred Jones is a henpecked, slightly pompous middle-aged scientist at the National Centre for Fisheries Excellence in London when he is approached by a mysterious sheikh about an outlandish plan to introduce the sport of salmon fishing into the Yemen. Dr. Jones refuses, but the project, however scientifically absurd, catches the eye of British politicians, who pressure him to work on it. His diaries of the Yemen Salmon Project, from beginning to glorious, tragic end, form the narrative backbone of this novel; interspersed throughout are government memos, e-mails, letters, and interview transcripts that deftly capture the absurdity of bureaucratic dysfunction.

With a wickedly wonderful cast of characters—including a weasel-like spin doctor, a missing soldier and his intrepid fiancée, and Dr. Jones’s own devilish wife—Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is the whimsical story of an unlikely hero who discovers true love, finds himself first a pawn and then a victim of political spin, and learns to believe in the impossible.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars I enjoyed the questions for discussion at the end of the book more than the book itself!, .......2007-09-09

I got used to the story being in the form of letters, e-mails, interviews and diary entries and it seemed to get easier to read as the story moved along. However there were sections I skim read that I found plain boring.

Although I could see the political satire in the story I would have to question the description that it's a `...feelgood comedy...' as suggested on the back cover.

The intelligent conversation and observation came mainly from Sheikh Muhammad who was a likable and respected figure. I liked his observations on the class snobbery in Britain...maybe that WAS the comedy ;)

When we first meet Dr Jones (Fred) he has `...moved on from religion...' and gives talks on 'Why God cannot exist'. As the story develops he learns about faith from both the Sheikh and the Yemen project. However, although I appreciated his personal journey, I never got to really like him, I just felt sorry for him.

All in all it was 'okay'. A little dull, but readable.
Thankfully though, there are plenty more books on the shelf ;)

4 out of 5 stars .....east meets west, or vica versa.......2007-09-08

....mr torday has clearly seen the disconnect between the thought patterns of east and west and wittyly puts the two together in a funny story. as yemen is a low literacy society however he doesn't manage to match up the "behind the scenes" communications there as he does in the antiquated empire-remnant british segements of the book. a nice read but not compelling, more so if you've ever visited yemen and can visualise the ironies, or been involved in the bureaucratic niceties of modern britain.

4 out of 5 stars The Fisherman's Chant, Impossibility and Belief.......2007-08-23

4.5 stars

The Fisherman's chant
Rod/reel,Flask/creel, Net/fly book/, And lunch!

"Paul Torday's debut novel is about an impossibility. It is also about belief in the impossible, and belief itself. And the remarkable thing is that a book about so deeply serious a matter can make you laugh, all the way to a last twist that's as sudden and shocking as a barbed hook"
Tim MacIntosh-Smith

Jay Vent, the British prime minister, has his country in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and dug himself in a deep hole. And, he goes on digging. The Prime Minister's PR person hears that a wealthy Yemeni sheikh, is planning to introduce salmon to his land, and he spots a photo opportunity. The sheik's plan has to be made to work. The initial proposal was drafted by Harriet Chetwode-Talbot, the sheik's land agent, who is polite and promises "no unreasonable financial constraints". The responsibility for the success falls on the shoulders of Dr. Alfred Jones, fisheries scientist. He is also a husband of Mary, an international banker who observes the world in very practical terms. They have lived a "calm and settled relationship" between "two rational and career-minded people." Alfred Jones, of course, points out that the project will be a hugely expensive flop. The sheik wishes to share the joys of fishing - with his own peopl. As the story unfolds in a morass of emails, letters and diary entries, the sheikh has found believers. Alfred Jones is converted to the possibility of the impossible. He is forced into the project and interacts with Harriet and the Sheikh, something amazing happens. Alfred has solutions, and his anxiety gave way to a sense of excitement. He also begins to fall in love with Harriet. This is a wonderful, enjoyable read with many fairy tale elements.

"As with all good satire, there is tragedy, a story of love and loss and another of love that never was. The author must have had a wonderful time lampooning the world of Tony Blair and his government. The parable of belief and its power is also introduced", says Blair Fox I like to fly fish and the wonderful feeling of peace and togetherness with the world is indeed a part of the belief in the impossible. The lessons learned in the novel are ours to discuss and share. Along the way, we laugh a lot and we smile at the pompous Peter Maxwell of the Prime Minister's office.

"Fishing encompasses everything from the science of salmon spawning to the war in Iraq. But all these elements merely give structure to the story: a lovely musing on how risking it all - however much it may be perceived as foolish or ridiculous, can bring hope and faith and love to the most bleak of outlooks, and can render the most ordinary chap - if only briefly" DANEET STEFFENS

An extraordinary novel that surprises in its simplicity. Akin to the novel 'A Short History of Tractors in the Ukraine' by Marina Lewycka.

Highly Recommended, prisrob 08-23-07

5 out of 5 stars A delightful light summer read.......2007-08-10

Very evocative. I've swum in wadis (Torday's description is dead on), even found small crabs at an oasis in the desert (now how did that get there) and had to deal with nonsensical projects that had no real purpose or chance of success. Torday knows his subject matter and his people, writes well and makes you believe that such things are possible.

A good book to pick up and read at the cottage or at the beach or during a commute. Even Al Qaeda gets mocked. Not serious, just fun and good enough to put a smile on your face and then pass it on to a friend. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars "I believe in it, because it is impossible.".......2007-07-18

Certainly the idea of establishing a viable salmon run in Yemen is, if not impossible, pretty darned close, and normally staid and compliant British biologist Alfred (Fred) Jones isn't shy about telling his superior so when his fisheries agency is approached to formulate a plan to do just that. Yet, Fred is dragooned into designing and overseeing the project anyway. His wife, Mary, is so preoccupied with her time-consuming career in finance, that she isn't the slightest interested in hearing about salmon in Yemen, so neglected Fred begins to form a confiding friendship with a younger woman, Harriet Chetwode-Talbot, the agent for the sheikh who is the creator and the bankroller of this salmon fantasia. Harriet opens Fred's eyes to the basically petrified habits of his life with her charm, her femininity, and her vulnerability. At the same time, both Fred and Harriet are changed by the "almost holy" Sheikh Muhammad ibn Zaidi bani Tihama, the Islamic visionary whose own belief in belief rubs off on them.

SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN is a smart, bittersweet send-up of bureaucracy, politicians, marriage, international relations, and fly fishing, among other things. So many books published these days can easily be fitted into genres and follow numbingly-familiar formulas. Paul Torday, in this, his first novel, demonstrates that deft, thinking-outside-the-box fiction is all-getout enjoyable. Although a few lesser plot points play out predictably enough, unpredictability wins the day where it counts. And although this isn't a pat alls-well-that-ends-well yarn, it leaves the reader (this one anyway) satisfied and enriched. This is satire, yes, but not a an lightweight "fish story." This a tender tale of adult growing pains and quasi-spiritual advancement. If unassuming and unimaginative Fred can learn to believe, can't we all?

Anglers, dreamers, and everyone else, treat yourself!

I recently returned from Argentina where I purchased this book before it was available here in the US. I own dozens of fly fishing books but there is none that compares to the outstanding photography in this book. It is a book every fly fisherman should own, whether or not they have ever fished Argentina. The book covers every important river in the Lake District and the bilingual text makes for excellent reading. I am purchasing copies for friends.

I have several fly tying books, of which, none can approach this book in explaining how to tye flies. The way this book is laid out is a clear advantage. I feel that most anyone will benefit who is interested in tying. A person can purchase a less expensive book on tying, but remember the old saying, "buy the best and cry once."

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-06-27

If you are thinking of getting started in fly tying, this IS the book to purchase. It will be your last and only book that you will need to purchase on this subject. It is extremely easy to navigate and takes the mystery out of fly tying techniques. Even seasoned veterans might find an easier technique to use. I would recommend it to family and friends!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-04-13

Probably one of the best books I have bought for the instruction of fly tying. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars The best entry book and probably one of the best tying books period!!!.......2007-04-02

After reading reviews of the book and deciding to take the "fly tying plunge," I bought this incredible book (and saved a nice bit by buying via Amazon... thank you Amazon). As a total fly tying "noob," I can attest to the fact that this is the single best source for anyone... and I do mean anyone... interested in jumping into this great time-honored tradition. Not enough can be said about the split page design. There are also a great number of excellent patterns with tips and tricks to make tying them (and personal creations) incredibly simple. The book could only be better if the authors could shrink my finger size or increase my dexterity. Short of that, this is the book to have! My recommendation is to buy the book before you buy any equipment or materials if you're considering this activity. But from what I've seen, it's NEVER too late to buy this book.

Happy Tying!!!

5 out of 5 stars For beginners and advanced fly-tyers.......2007-03-09

I bought this book for my husband, who had only been tying his own flies for 2 months. He had a book that came with his kit, but he'd already mastered all those and was ready to move on. This book, The Benchside Introduction to Fly Tying, was a huge hit with him. It not only works because it deals with many beginner techniques, but also because it has carried him along as his skills have improved. In fact, I don't know that he'll ever need another book, because this one covers all skill ranges. According to him, the pictures are great, very detailed, and he loves that he can lay the book flat (because of the spiral binding), instead of having to put something heavy on the page to hold it down while he works. He said he probably won't ever have to buy another fly! Overall, a great book and I, and he, highly recommend it.

I now live in rural Alaska and my husband has fished all summer - fresh salmon can't be beat! This book was spot on and I look forward to using it to surprise my husband with a cool fishing trip. The pictures were excellant and look just like what I live in!

5 out of 5 stars Probably too good.......2007-08-21

This book is the best, but I think I could do without all the colored pictures, a smaller book, and less expensive. After all, are you going fishing, or sitting in your recliner looking at all the nice pictures?

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and comprehensive, an excellent reference for fishing in Alaska.......2007-07-12

I was very pleased with this purchase. The book covers all of the major sport fish that can be expected in Alaska. Each species gets a detailed treatment including biology, tackle, fishing techniques, and some of the best places to go for each species. The authors also provide a detailed discussion of the various geographic regions of the state (including contact information for guides and air taxis) making it easy to plan a fishing trip by region or by species. The book is filled with photography that beautifully illustrates the fish and places of Alaska.

5 out of 5 stars Explore Alaska.......2007-04-12

Any fisherman planning a trip to Alaska should check out this reference. There are tips on hiring a guide and exploring the waterways on your own.

This book should definately be on your list if you are planning a fishing trip to Alaska. It is the most comprehesive source of information that I have seen.

4 out of 5 stars A very good fly fishing resource.......2007-08-05

For very good information tool for the novice flyfisherman and it's even a good reference guide for the more experienced flyfishing individual.

4 out of 5 stars A very good fly fishing guide.......2007-06-27

I am a novice to fly fishing. I had ordered Orvis Fly-Fishing Guide together with the L.L. Bean Ultimate Book of Fly Fishing and I have to say that L.L. Bean Ultimate Book of Fly Fishing has a slight advantage over this one. On the other hand though, this book provides a well-rounded package of information on fly fishing, which the beginners will no doubt appreciate in time as well once they get past the basics. Pros: This is a well written book for all fly fishers. Nobody will find it boring. Even the most advanced fly fishing enthusiasts will benefit from this book. Con: The beginners might have difficulty understanding the basic concepts and terminology. In conclusion, I think I will learn the fundamentals of this sport/pastime from the L.L. Bean guide at the beginning and will advance to Orvis book to refine my knowledge and build on my experience. I definitely recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent illistrations.......2007-05-26

This is a great book to have if you're just beginning or if you want a quick reference as an expert. The size is a bit unrealistic to travel with and is the only reason it gets 4 stars instead of 5.

5 out of 5 stars Introduction to Fly Fishing.......2007-04-10

New fly fishermen will love this great resource, which is full of beautiful pictures and helpful diagrams. Rod types, fly lines, and casting basics are all covered.

5 out of 5 stars Great Informative Book.......2007-04-06

For someone just getting into the sport, like myself, this book provides plenty of punch for the money. I find myself using it as an encyclopedia of sorts for all things related to fly fishing. Highly recommend!

David James Duncan's first novel has gained an increasingly wide audience over the years--some might even call it a following. This coming-of-age tale of Gus Orviston's search for the Pacific Northwest's elusive steelhead, a metaphor for Gus's internal quest for self-knowledge, appeals to all who cherish a good yarn and memorable characters. Uncle Zeke's colorful rendition of Gus's conception on the banks of the Deschutes River is itself worth the price of purchase.

Book Description

Since its publication by Sierra Club Books nearly two decades ago, The River Why has become a classic, standing with Norman Maclean's A River Runs Through It as the most-read fiction about fly-fishing of our era. Duncan's protagonist, Gus Orviston, is an irreverent young flyfisherman--a vibrant character who makes us laugh easily and feel deeply, and who speaks with startling truth about the way we live.
Leaving behind a madcap, fishing-obsessed family, Gus embarks on an extraordinary voyage of self-discovery along his beloved Oregon rivers. What he unexpectedly finds is man's wanton destruction of nature and a burning desire to commit himself to its preservation.
The River Why is a tale that gives a contemporary voice to the concerns and hopes of all living things on this beautiful, watery planet. It is the story of one man's search for meaning, for love, and for a sane way to live.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars After the first few chapters, throw it away..........2007-06-20

Even though I hate fishing and have maybe done it once, the first few chapters of this book are humorous and interesting, in particular Bill Bob, Gus' younger brother. Unfortunately, Bill Bob's role is small to almost nonexistent as the book goes on and the author makes him say some pretty idiotic pseudo-philosophical/religious ramblings, such as a long discussion with Gus about how shadows are our guardians.

The book is largely predictable from the beginning until the end and it's almost like a bunch of authors get together to provide the same theme. The overall structure of the book is Gus starts to question life, including death, ultimate meaning, his meaning, and other philosophy 101 questions. And, of course, Gus ends up finding his meaning in the eyes of some backwoods hippie chick and has a religious experience (if you can call it that) while walking home from a long, incredibly drawn out trip down a river following a fish in his line.

I'm sure many people will see this book as being "deep" or "an interesting discussion of blah blah blah", but if you've even remotely dipped your foot in philosophy this book is hardly enlightening. I pushed through the book simply because I got past the half way point, then promptly threw it in the trash when I was done.

5 out of 5 stars The River Why, by David James Duncan.......2007-01-18

Duncan delivers a heart warmingstory about family and love and even a little about fishing. While set in Oregon, near Portland and the coast, I believe that this "why" river might actually be in Northern California. You be the judge. His writing style is imaginative and fluid. I would reccomend this book to anyone who can read.

5 out of 5 stars David James Duncan: a unique writer and excellent human being........2006-11-05

Dear reader of reviewers,

I am completely in awe of Mr. Duncan's writing. He writes as though he's lived 7 lives and had 14 different siblings, and 3 or 4 unique sets of parents. He transcends many writing barriers...his lines of words often have uniquely heightened states of dream-like consciousness. All lines and passages, stories and musings, conversations and descriptions, are very very alive. The lines of the River Why have a fascinating youthfulness. It is an excellent book.

The freshmen honor students at UM Missoula were supposed to read The Brother's K the summer before arriving in Fall 2002. But, for me, it was MUCH too thick for the time allotted. (I eventually finished that novel, and appreciate it very much, and reccomend it every time the word "book" comes up in conversation.) But, being a trout nut fly fisherman, I decided to tackle the relatively thinner "River." A good choice it was.

I have found myself, like the adolescent, going back again and again to the fishing scene where Gus meets his match. I actually get a rush from reading that part...when she jumps from the tree, my palms sweat. The dream sections with Bill Bob are amazing, like peering into the eyes of a glowing extraterrestrial cat. I wish William James could have read Duncan.

If baseball afficionados tend to love the Brother's K, fishermen will surely love this book. Indeed, I rate "River" as a valuble fishing book that can whack a fly fisherperson out of the intermediate rut and into creative angling. I would bet that Duncan is a supurb fisherman himself.

He is also a superb human being, even though he wriggled his way free when I asked him to go fishing with me, saying something like, "Well, we all have our favorite spots [to fish], and I'm sure you do too." Wanting to do far more than simply protect his fishing spots, he has a tremendous heart for the land and her rivers and forests and inhabitants, especially birds and trout. I feel very honored to have met him and read a few of his works. The River Why is my favorite novel, and I've read it and referred to it multiple times.

With continued thoughfulness and honing of leadership, Duncan could make a great fisher of men, for he holds the capacity to whack people's minds out of many ruts and into ones of positive personal and social change. He is rather disturbed by wars and habitat destruction and would very much like to see them altogether stop.

Bravo, David James, for providing us with your writings. The earth is very lucky to have you. I look forward to reading more of your works, especially the ones about water.

With Enthusiasm,

Clark Rector

3 out of 5 stars Good, but a bit uneven.......2006-05-06

Although it took me a while to decide if I should keep reading, by the end of THE RIVER WHY I was glad I did. Duncan basically makes the argument that a life worth living arises from building loving connections with the people around us, and from loving God and respecting nature. I enjoyed the subject matter and in many ways identified with the narrator's way of experiencing the world, so ultimately I enjoyed the book.

But with that said, here's a little warning: In the acknowledgments Duncan writes that, without his editor, the book "would at times perchance exhibit a not unperverse and not unmaddening which is to say not unstupid verbosity not unlike this here." Unfortunately, I can hardly tell the difference between this self-deprecating example of bad writing and a number of equally indulgent passages in the book as published. The dialogue can be unconvincing in parts, the narrative gets bogged down at times, and while the book has some great moments, the execution can be a bit uneven.

5 out of 5 stars Life Defining, Life Changing.......2006-03-07

I tend not to read philosphy. I suppose I don't trust others to define how I should think about life or God or death. Nor do I tend to read the writings of mystics and prophets, including the Holy Bible. I have little patience with priests and ministers and their rantings and their judgements.

This book, however, with all of its humor and anguish and conflict, has served for me as a philosophical treatise of the greatest depth of understanding and beauty. It looks at life in a totally unique manner - through the eyes of a fanatical fly fisherman - who learns that there is more to life than fishing.

As a fly fisherman myself, though perhaps not so fanatical, I fished right along side of Gus - wading his creeks and rivers in the cold, dawn mist or the still of evening with the Oregon chill and damp as our third companion. I suffered along with him as he found his way in the wilderness of the headlands rising up from the Oregon coast.

You don't have to be a fisherman to enjoy this book or to absorb its messages. You will laugh out loud, you will shed some tears and you will think a great deal about life and love and death.

Book Description

Amateur or expert, every angler dreams of landing "the big one," but that's only part of the appeal of fly fishing. Because even when hours pass without a bite, nothing beats the rugged beauty of the surroundings. For both armchair travelers and avid outdoorsmen who may have already started a checklist of their own, Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die maps out the meccas of the fly-fishing world.

Through in-depth interviews with the sport's acknowledged gurus, author Chris Santella goes beyond standard guides to convey the very essence of the recommended locations. Readers can vicariously cast mouse pattners to fifty-pound taimen in the wilds of Mongolia, wrangle with wily permit off the Florida Keys, and match the hatch on Montana's Armstrong's Spring Creek. Jardines de la Reina, Cuba (tarpon), the Zhupanova River, Kamchatka (rainbow trout), and the Rio Negro, Brazil (peacock bass) are also included. The essays include a cultural and natural history of each site, along with colorful anecdotes based on the author's and authorities' experiences.

With breath-takingly-beautiful photos of the spots, many by celebrated fly-fishing photographer R. Valentine Atkinson, the book also provides adventurous anglers with enough travel-and-tackle information so that they, too, can start planning excursions to go fish around the globe.

4 out of 5 stars Where's the Beef, Er Trout?.......2006-11-25

This is a beautiful book, one that is smartly designed and packaged, pleasant to leaf through and to handle, but somewhat lacking in substance.

Here's an example of the kind of lapse that would have been caught had the book been written for hard core fisherpeople. We read, "The South Island of New Zealand is awash with beauty and teeming with trout". And then a few sentences later, "The South Island trouting experience is certainly one of quality rather than quantity. A majority of the rivers simply don't support large numbers of fish. Some of the most fishy-looking water you can imagine may not contain a single fish".

So is the South Island "teeming with trout" or is it not?

Ultimately it doesn't really matter. This isn't a book about information - it's a wonderful collection of vicarious fishing trips. I'd never flicked a fly rod when I got it, yet I was engrossed, transported, and in the end captivated.

The settings range from intimate, "Brown Trout on Letort Spring Run", to grand, "Steelhead on the Dean River". Along the way we encounter tarpon, bonefish, snook, pike, redfish, all manner of salmon and trout, and even something known as a giant trevally that lurks in the waters off Christmas Island.

And the photographs are stunning. I only wish there were one for every destination.

Recommended to wile away a winter's afternoon while waiting for the ice to break.

5 out of 5 stars Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die.......2006-08-16

A wonderful book for the fly fishing enthusiast. A keepsake for all fishermen. A must have for the coffe table!

3 out of 5 stars Beatiful places.......2006-03-09

nice book, but i would like to see more pictures of the different species!! also some maps to locate some places would be great...I live in argentina and the 3 places chosen are great, although you must be a millionaire to fish rio grande!! Fortunately we still have a lot of places here to fish for free.
I would rather see a book where they tell where to fish and spent little money (as an example the book tells you that i f you want to fish rio traful, the only way to do it is going to arroyo verde lodge and thats no true!! you can do it for free if you want..there are accesses by foot or you can reach it by the lake, an there are other private places much more cheaper, but why they dont describe that??). Do not tell me where i can go spending $ 5000 a week because its obvious i could go everywhere with that money!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Places i only wish i could go.......2005-12-15

There are a lot of places i realy wish i could go fly fishing. Unfortunatly, there are only a few select places that are affordable. and those that are doable just don't have much description convincing me to go. if there was only some background info or narrative this book would go be a much more useful guide.

3 out of 5 stars So many places, so little time..........2005-10-21

I was expecting to read location related fishing stories written by experienced anglers and was a little bit dissapointed to realize the interview based approach. There seems to be no real feelings in these short texts. Additionally, being a big fan of Mr. Atkinson's art, the size of the book really puts some strict constraints to his photos. Unfortunately.

Having said the above, I have to admit, that I don't regret the purchase of the book. I think that every actively travelling fly fisherman should have it. There is a lot of very valuable information in it, although, quite strongly biased in favor of the USA.
