In a time when educators and politicians in the United States are fumbling for a fix--from vouchers to smaller class sizes--for ailing public schools, it's refreshing to read the more sophisticated take on what can be done to improve American education found in The Teaching Gap, a straightforward analysis of approaches towards teaching around the world. James W. Stigler, a UCLA psychology professor, and James Hiebert, an education professor at the University of Delaware, argue that America's culture of teaching needs to be changed before we see any real change in student achievement--and they're not simply talking about higher pay and more respect.

The bulk of The Teaching Gap examines the cultural differences among teaching methods, with detailed accounts of video observations of eighth-grade math teachers that were part of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study, or TIMSS (which Stigler directed). American teachers in the videos tend to emphasize terms and procedures, thinking of math as a set of tedious skills. They try to interest students with praise and real-life problems. In contrast, Japanese teachers are more likely to emphasize ideas, expecting the concepts alone to stir students' natural curiosity. They weave together lessons that have a distinct beginning, middle, and end. Teachers in the other countries are more likely to share lessons on what works in the classroom and receive more sophisticated training, the authors found. Only seven out of 41 nations scored lower than the U.S. in TIMSS, placing American eighth-graders with those from Cyprus, Portugal, South Africa, Kuwait, Iran, and Colombia. Without falling into teacher-bashing mode, Stigler and Hiebert insist that reform efforts need to originate with teachers, not university researchers. They call for overhauling the teaching profession with stricter requirements, better peer review, and more demanding academic standards, as well as improved interaction between teachers. Their detailed examination of the study's video observations gets to the heart of the matter and should be worthwhile reading for educators, policymakers, and anyone interested in the condition of today's education system. --Jodi Mailander Farrell

Book Description

Comparing math teaching practices in Japan and Germany with those in the United States, two leading researchers offer a surprising new view of teaching and a bold action plan for improving education inside the American classroom.

For years our schools and children have lagged behind international standards in reading, arithmetic, and most other areas of academic achievement. It is no secret that American schools are in dire need of improvement, and that education has become our nation's number-one priority. But even though almost every state in the country is working to develop higher standards for what students should be learning, along with the means for assessing their progress, the quick-fix solutions implemented so far haven't had a noticeable impact.

The problem, as James Stigler and James Hiebert explain, is that most efforts to improve education fail because they simply don't have any impact on the quality of teaching inside classrooms. Teaching, they argue, is cultural. American teachers aren't incompetent, but the methods they use are severely limited, and American teaching has no system in place for getting better. It is teaching, not teachers, that must be changed.

In The Teaching Gap, the authors draw on the conclusions of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) -- an innovative new study of teaching in several cultures -- to refocus educational reform efforts. Using videotaped lessons from dozens of randomly selected eighth-grade classrooms in the United States, Japan, and Germany, the authors reveal the rich, yet unfulfilled promise of American teaching and document exactly how other countries have consistently stayed ahead of us in the rate their children learn. Our schools can be restructured as places where teachers can engage in career-long learning and classrooms can become laboratories for developing new, teaching-centered ideas. If provided the time they need during the school day for collaborative lesson study and plan building, teachers will change the way our students learn.

James Stigler and James Hiebert have given us nothing less than a "best practices" for teachers -- one that offers proof that how teachers teach is far more important than increased spending, state-of-the-art facilities, mandatory homework, or special education -- and a plan for change that educators, teachers, and parents can implement together.

5 out of 5 stars This is how it should be done. .......2007-06-08

Why is American Schools being out performed by schools in other countries? It couldn't be the teaching methods taught in today's Teacher Prep colleges, could it? It is not a thick book. Read it and think. then read related materials.
Can it be done? It is being done, just not hear. This is a research book worth reading in an easy reading format.

5 out of 5 stars Do The Easy Things First!.......2006-09-12

American middle-school and high-school pupils continually lag their peers in other developed countries - especially in mathematics - despite years of decreasing class size, building ornate new structures, "new" math, etc. However, these efforts are bound to fail if what goes on inside the classrooms is poorly structured.

The "bad news" is that we are often blind to the most familiar aspects of our everyday environment; the "good news" is that looking across cultures is one of the best ways to sharpen our view of ourselves. In "The Teaching Gap" the German and Japanese 8th-grade classes studied were comparable to the American classes - yet, substantive differences were noted.

Content in the U.S. was less advanced and presented in a more piecemeal and prescriptive way - there were twice the number of definitions presented in the U.S., and more concepts were simply given/stated vs. developed/derived. There was also more topic switching in the U.S., more interruptions (0% in Japan, 13% in Germany, and 31% in the U.S.), less coherence of U.S. lessons, less student involvement in doing the work (9% in the U.S., 19% in Germany, 40% in Japan).

Another difference is that Japanese teachers do not use overhead projectors - instead, they work their way around the room on chalkboards, leaving a record of the entire lesson for the pupils. Still another is that Japanese teachers focus on joint efforts at continuous improvement - a concept probably taken from Toyota's much vaunted "Toyota Production System."

"The Teaching Gap" concludes that most popular U.S. reform efforts have avoided a direct focus on teaching. The evidence presented within the book indicates that it is time we did.

4 out of 5 stars It may not be correct, but..........2005-12-29

After reading the book and the previous posters, even if the Japanese mathematics classes were not representative of the education system as a whole, the implications of this study and the ideas that the authors came up with are what we should be focusing on.

The question "why?" is asked far too little in all mathematics classes. If only we would take some time to teach the methods and reasons of mathematics, rather than just the process, I am sure that all students will benefit and be able to truly understand the concepts that are currently being taught with a "learn it for the test" attitude.

The book brings up these vital points, so that teachers may question their styles, regardless of the authenticity of some of their claims.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting for a Education Student.......2004-02-17

I am in a program to become a High School math teacher. Our professor recommended this book. I found it to be pretty interesting. The authors do a detailed analysis of a video study from the TIMSS study. Their analysis compares how math is taught in the US, Germany and Japan. Their conclusion is that the US approach focuses on teaching terms and procedures where as the other countries emphasize understanding concepts. They go onto to propose a system of "lesson planning" to improve teaching in the US. Lesson planning calls for teachers to work in teams and develop a single lesson plan (maybe one per semester). The process of developing the lesson plan and refining it imparts to the teachers involved a kind of "best practices" that they can then use in their everyday planning. I am not sure if this is practical, but it sure sounds reasonable to me.

1 out of 5 stars Inaccurate.......2002-06-30

I read the part of this book regarding Japan. I've taught in a Japanese public junior high school and found lots of inaccuracies in the text. The conclusions they came to are outdated and in places in accurate.

For example, the authors state that there is no widespread reforms in Japanese education, that teachers constantly strive for improvement. This year the Ministry of Education has instituted widespread reform and there has been a lot in the Japanese media about the preparations for this. Japanese people are very dissatisfied with the schools and some wish they'd adopt a few Western style practices.

However, there is little or no accountability in Japanese instruction. Teachers can blythely ignore any required changes and a few have told me that they've been teaching their way for years and don't want to change. None of this is in the book.

While there are a lot of teachers' meetings in Japan, improving one's performance is optional. Often the teachers who do strive for excellence are ostrasized. The book didn't mention this.

Japanese schools are in crisis. There's rampant absenteeism and classroom violence and breakdown. It's not a system we should emulate. Buy another book.

5 out of 5 stars History Comes Alive.......2007-09-01

The book was of special interest to me as I have lived through the major portion of this period of history and recall much that is written but also learn much more. The author's coverage of most of the 20th century included the American presidents as well as other national leaders. The book will probably be considered politically incorrect by many due to his casual reference to the specific prayers of several presidents. He touched on subjects other than government including books and music. Some events receiving extensive attention were World War l, the Depression, World War ll, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Cold War. . I believe for the most part he was very objective although he appeared to have a negative bias toward Presidents Wilson and Nixon and a very positive bias toward President Franklin Roosevelt. He wrote with first hand knowledge of President Reagan and the first President Bush. History becomes very interesting under this author's pen.

5 out of 5 stars A superb history of the United States of America.......2007-08-23

The first volume of "America: The Last Best Hope" is, in my opinion, the finest contemporary history of the United States yet written. It is an honest telling of the nation's history, warts and all, a far cry than the America hating nonsense that is unfortunately being taught to our children.

The second volume isn't as good. Still superior to anything else on the subject I've read, but I felt that there should have been two volumes, not one. The first covering 1914 to about 1945 and the second from roughly 1945 through the Reagan years.

Why? Because I felt that Dr. Bennett had crammed too much into this single volume and, as a result, been forced to omit illuminating detail. More time and space, for example, should have been spent on examining how Democrats in Congress perpetuated racial discrimination for almost a century and fought demonically until the last to prevent passage of the Civil Rights Act.

Instead, many historically significant episodes are reduced to a few sentences. Still illuminating, but leaving the already knowledgeable reader panting for more. Dr. Bennett and, I presume, his research team have been more than diligent in teasing obscure sources out of the archives and provide new information even to someone like me who has been an avid consumer of American histories for more than five decades.

The book is not perfect. There are small, but disturbing errors, such as the misspelling of Messerschmitt, a WWII German aircraft manufacturer.

On the whole though, this remains a marvelous history of America, faults and all. It would make a wonderful gift, I think, for any intelligent high-school or older student from a giver who wants the recipient to know just how fortunate they are to live in this magnificient nation.

5 out of 5 stars America: The Last Best Hope.......2007-08-10

I hated history as a youngster, but if I'd had this master writing the courses, I might have become an historian. This is a fantastic book, and should be required reading for all Americans.

5 out of 5 stars Review: America: The Last Best Hope (Volume II).......2007-07-27

I gave this book 5 Stars because I think the author did exactly what he set out to do: present a light, airy, easy to read narrative of American history covering the period from WWI to the end of the Cold War. Because this is not a text book and is limited in size and scope constraints likely placed on it by the publisher (530 pages), it necessarily raises as many questions as it answers. Considering those constraints, I found the presentation to be fast, fair, fun, educational, interesting, and accurate.

5 out of 5 stars What a suspenseful story!.......2007-07-18

Reading William Bennett's history of America in the 20th century is like watching an episode of "24." Throughout the 20th century, the American people have been underestimated, mistrusted and, often, forced to fight with one hand tied behind their backs. Reluctant to enter both World Wars, as well as the Cold War, they somehow found the conviction and determination to take on a fight and win it. And, like the old joke about Jack Bauer -- if everyone would just listen Jack, the show wouldn't only last one hour -- Bennett makes a convincing case that Americans have also been "right" about many of the important things -- economic system, human rights, family values. Now, if only the world would have followed the American way of life and pursued the American dreams, as we have done, it might have been spared the twin nightmares of Communism and Fascism, which made the century seem so long -- and hopeless!
In Bennett's reading of American history, America is not the "last best hope" in the sense of "the best thing going to the exclusion of all the others." It truly is the "best hope." The arc of this storyline will continue to ascend, will continue to aspire to greater things, so long as we can properly interpret our past and preserve what is best about America and its people.
On a final note: some readers might expect Bennett to be tendencious. I did not find this, and I would conclude that his treatment of American history was fair.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for large complex sales.......2007-04-29

The (new!) strategic selling technique is optimal for large complex sales - how do you sell the implementation of an enterprise software system, or the outsourcing of customer care? These types of sales require more than product innovation, advertising, or dropping a pair of football tickets off to the buyer. They require an in depth understanding of the customer organization, and both what drives change, and what stops it. The methods here aren't an "Everywhere for everything" panaceas - you don't need them to get more shelf space for Cheerios - but the are great for organizing attacks on the big sales.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Sales Strategy Approach.......2007-03-02

A real strategic approach to building business relationships and getting sales that have the best chance of delivering a win-win for both you and the client.

I "dumbed down" to a one-page crib sheet that I try to follow in my consulting business. It's worked very well so far. That said, if your target market is small businesses (25 or less employees), while the strategy will work, it may be too much of an effort up front for the potential pay-off down the road. If your target is companies of 2,000+ employees, this is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Great Process For Sales!.......2007-02-25

This book helped me understand the four major buying positions within an organization; Coach, User Buyer, Technical Buyer and Economic Buyer. Once I understood the roles each of these play during a complex sale, it helped me concentrate on the position and not the personality. This book helped me understand the objectives of each buying position and gave me pointers on how to take advantage with the proper communication techniques. I highly recommend it for all sales people who are trying to sell to large corporations.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book.......2006-11-03

This book really helps you to find all the right people to help make your sell successful. I recommend it to every sales person.

A book about how to get what you want out of life, whether that is in your business or personal life. It is filled with specific advice to keep you focused on the outcome you're shooting for, and equipped to manage the pressure that can either help you or hurt you along the way. It gives excellent suggestions on bargaining- everything from the greet to closing the deal. It helps you create win/win situations with your customers.

This my second cheese book. My first one, "Cheese Primer" didn't list many of the cheeses our local gourmet store carries. This does, and then some. I don't always agree with his ratings, but the descriptions are accurate. Best read if you already know something about cheese and want to expand your horizons.

5 out of 5 stars Cheese Maven's Choice.......2007-01-04

Cheese is not only my profession, it is my passion. I have a large collection of books about cheese. "Cheese: A Connoisseur's Guide to the World's Best" is an excellent reference, and the perfect complement to McCalman's "The Cheese Plate." Although less comprehensive than the classic "Cheese Primer" by Steven Jenkins, I find McCalman's guide, with its luscious photos, truely a "connoisseur's guide" rather than an encyclopedia. Unfortunately, the majority of the world-class cheeses that McCalman so beautifully depicts and describes, are not widely available throughout the US. What a shame!

5 out of 5 stars ... and then came the Book of Cheese.......2006-06-25

From Quebec's Chaput Vacherin Mont d'Or to Ireland's Ardrahan and Roomano of Holland to Switzerland's Sbrinz, Cheese - A Connoisseur's Guide to the World's Best by Max McCalman and David Gibbons is a sumptuous feast for mind and eye to 200 of the world's finest cheeses. Listen to what McCalman has to say about Epoisses - "the King of Cheeses" - "Take it out of the fridge, put it on a plate, wait for it to turn meltingly soft and alluring, then cut in and enjoy the beautiful essence of controlled milk spoilage." No wonder this book has become my guide when seeking out a new world of artisanal cheese to explore!

Several suggestions in a new edition -

(1)a description of the 100 point scale used in rating cheeses would be interesting and informative, and would be helpful in making the ratings appear less arbitrary and
(2)a reference list to other informative and authoritative books on cheese consulted by the authors in preparing the book or of potential interest to readers.

5 out of 5 stars A Course on Cheese.......2006-06-01

I love a good piece of stinky cheese. I enjoy taking it out of the fridge and letting its nasty old stank peel the paint off my walls, knockout my cat, and make the local children cry. It's how you know you gots yerself sum quality cheese right there.

Unfortuneatly, I must admit, my cheese knowledge is limited to about, oh, whatever I might have picked up from a cookbook or Food Network. Thank heavens for Max McCalman, may chiors sing his spoiled milk praises! For those who don't really know this guy, he is the man and fromager (cheese brainiac) who pretty much single handedly spearheaded the idea of presenting true artisinal cheeses, cheese courses, and giving cheese the kind of credit we give to wine here in America. He has become well known for his work in the New York restaurants Picholine and Artisinal, and luckilly for those of us not living shibby in New York, has gone out of his way to create a wonderful guide to the best of the best in his second book, Cheese: A Connoisseur's Guide to the World's Best.

While McCalman's first book, The Cheese Plate, co-authored by David Gibbons, was a chic everyperson's guide to wine and cheese pairings, Cheese simply gives us 200 of the world's best cheeses. Listed in alphabetical order, each cheese is described beautifully and concisely noting where it is produced, how it is produced, how best to enjoy it, and the underlying flavors you should expect when experiencing it. I use the word experience, because after trying some of these selections, it really is the only appropriate word that the English language can offer me. McCalman also goes ahead to offer with each cheese a variety of different wines (red, white, and blush) and even some sparkling wines that should help you wow your party guests' palates.

McCalman, also understanding our blind kitten approach to cheese, also guides you through various aspects of cheese. Early chapters deal with how to select, store, prepare, serve various kinds of cheese. Later on we are given a thurough lesson on how to pair cheese with various breads, fruits, and nuts, or how to simply lay back and enjoy a piece unmolested by any other food. Basics for how to create and serve a cheese course or a cheese tasting party will inspire you to host your own (I know I plan to have a truly stinky one shortly!). Lastly, of course, an extensive, though maybe a bit too much so, course on how to pair wine and cheese. The watchful and caring teacher, he does this in a simple, plainspoken manner, allowing any reader to understand not only how to preform each task, but the why behind it as well.

I have to say, I would not have discovered my love of Lancaster, my passion for Prattigauer, my desire for Doddington, and how I give resounding praise to Roaring 40's Blue!

Overall, I give Cheese a 5 out of 5. This book is a wonderful addition to any food lover's bookshelf. It's susinct, informative, and covers a wide variety of cheeses you can find from California to Italy.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable! Essential for Anyone Interested in Cheese.......2006-06-01

This book, written by one of America's foremost authorities on cheese, is remarkable. The material is well researched, the photographs are stunning, and the recommendations are top notch. Particularly important are the wine pairings, which are insightful and very useful. Like McCalman's "The Cheese Plate," this book looks as elegant as a coffee table book, however it contains a wealth of information valuable to any cheese enthusiast.

According to Jim Rogers, "commodities get no respect." Here are a few reasons why he thinks they should: they are easier to comprehend and study than stocks and behave more rationally since they are subject to the basic laws of supply and demand; they have outperformed many other investment options in recent years; it is foolish to ignore an entire sector of the marketplace; and a bull market is currently under way in commodities--a trend that Rogers expects to last for a least a decade longer. Further, Rogers believes that you cannot be a successful investor in stocks, bonds, or currencies without an understanding of commodities. Hot Commodities: How Anyone Can Invest Profitably in the World's Best Market is designed to introduce the novice to the basics of investing in commodities as well as explain what they are and why they are important. In doing so, he shatters some myths about the relative risks of commodities, explains the relationship between the stock and commodities markets, and provides a succinct analysis and history of the global oil, gold, lead, sugar, and coffee markets.

Rogers also offers practical advice and information for beginners, including the best resources, how to read the commodities reports in the newspaper or on television, the various ways to open an account, information on index funds (such as Rogers' own index fund that he started in 1998), mechanisms, terminology, and other vital details people must know before investing. Clearly written and entertaining, Hot Commodities offers a solid introduction to investments that many people, including financial advisors, fail to give the proper respect. --Shawn Carkonen

Book Description

The next bull market is here. It’s not in stocks. It’s not in bonds. It’s in commodities –and some smart investors will be riding that bull to record returns in the next decade.

Before Jim Rogers hit the road to write his bestselling books Investment Biker and Adventure Capitalist, he was one of the world’s most successful investors. He cofounded the Quantum Fund and made so much money that he never needed to work again. Yet despite his success, Rogers has never written a book of practical investment advice–until now.

In Hot Commodities, Rogers offers the lowdown on the most lucrative markets for today and tomorrow. In 1998, gliding under the radar, a bull market in commodities began. Rogers thinks it’s going to continue for at least fifteen years–and he’s put his money where his mouth is: In 1998, he started his own commodities index fund. It’s up 165% since then, with more than $200 million invested, and it’s the single-best performing index fund in the world in any asset class. Less risky than stocks and less sluggish than bonds,, commodities are where the money is–and will be in the years ahead. Rogers’s strategies are simple and straightforward. You can start small–a few thousand dollars will suffice. It’s all about putting your money into stuff you understand, the basic materials of everyday life, like coal, sugar, cotton, corn, or crude oil. Once you recognize the cyclical and historical trading patterns outlined here, you’ll be on your way.

In language that is both colorful and accessible, but Rogers explains why the world of commodity investing can be one of the simplest of all–and how commodities are the bases by which investors can value companies, markets, and whole economies. To be a truly great investor is to know something about commodities.

For small investors and high rollers alike, Hot Commodities is as good as gold . . . or lead, or aluminum, which are some of the commodities Rogers says could be as rewarding for investors.

5 out of 5 stars Good info.......2007-08-14

The book is well written,Jim is very knowledgeable and gives ways in which anyone can invest in commodities. He explains a complicated subject in laymans terms. He also describes the world today and how politics and logistics come into play, a fascinating book.

3 out of 5 stars Good overall intro but don't expect to make a trade after reading it.......2007-07-27

Before reading this book, I barely knew how to spell commodities, much less trade them. This book gives a good high-level introduction to what the commodities market is all about and attempts to get you jazzed about the market for the coming decade. After reading the book, you'll be able to understand the commodity trading lingo and know how to read prices, but will not have enough information (nor the confidence) to make your first trade. It lacks thorough details concerning trading in general, fundamental analysis of futures, and direction on creating a trading plan. I'm currently reading Trading Commodities & Financial Futures by George Kleinman which goes into much better detail of these subjects. I certainly got a better handle on trading by reading Hot Commodities, but it's a bit novice, even for a novice.

3 out of 5 stars Rating Jim Rogers.......2007-07-03

As a result of Jim Rogers, I've actually changed a substantial part of my portfolio. However, this is an endorsement of Jim Rogers, and not the book, "Hot Commodities." I knew no more after reading the book than I did after hearing and seeing him on TV. The message could have been summed up in about ten pages, not 255.

4 out of 5 stars cheap introduction to fundamental analysis.......2007-06-15

The author gives some of his logic why he believes the commodities market is entering a bull market for maybe the next decade, then he follows this with some alternatives to the commodities market followed by the usual introduction about how the commodities markets function. Next he turns to showing how to think about the markets as a fundamentalist--he claims he is the world's worst trader. He talks about the impact of China on the markets, as contrasted with the impact of India and other Central Asian emerging economies (including Russia). Then he illustrates the fundamentalist logic for supply, demand and world politics and their influence on the prices for oil, gold (and lead), sugar and coffee. Along the way he mixes in some of his market experience and insights.

I find the value of the book primarily in his illustration of the kind to thinking and resources needed to perform fundamental analysis of the commodities market. And this is one of the cheapest books to cover the basics.

5 out of 5 stars Informative.......2007-08-23

I thought it very interesting and wasn't really aware of what I was doing to my body. I have since with a couple of my friends revised the way we eat know. No bread (yeast) products have gone past my lips in over a month now. I have also tried different things like seaweed and dulse and just add more protein to my diet. I haven't been able to fit into many things at the beginning of spring/summer but can now. I never feel as full any more and I only eat when hungry not when I just crave something.
thank you so much.

5 out of 5 stars Fat Flush Foods.......2007-07-29

Classic herbs which help to flush fat are flaxseed oil, anise,
cayenne, cinnamon, cumin, fennel seed, garlic and parsley.
Apple seed vinegar, cranberry , B12 and flaxseed oil help to flush
cholesterol. Lemons act as a detoxifier. Lamb acts to stabilizer
blood sugar, as well as salmon and whey protein.

Other fat flush foods are fresh veggies, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage,
cauliflower, jicama (potato and apple cross) and cucumber.
The acquisition would be perfect to supplement any formal diet plan.
As such, it would be a good value for the price charged.

5 out of 5 stars Great information!.......2007-07-15

This book taught me a lot about what foods I should be eating. Very informative and easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong if you buy it!.......2007-07-13

This is a very useful guide. This book is a collection of foods, supplements, and herbs/spices that Ann Gittleman considers her top fat "flushers." She gives you some background on the item; what the fat flush factors are (Blood Sugar Stabilizer; Cholesterol Zapper; Detoxifier; Diuretic; Energizer; Thermogenic); recommended usage; facts about the item; how to boost the benefits; cooking tips; caution tips. The herb/spices section has been very helpful to me. I know very little about seasoning dishes. Ann Gittleman has helped me a great deal in this department by compiling all this information into a handy guide made especially for fat flushers. You'll find it full of valuable information to help you prepare better meals which in turn helps you to lose weight and keep it off. You can't go wrong if you buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book!.......2007-06-22

I am glad I ordered this book. I refer to it each week to plan my meals. It makes it much easier to stay on a healthy eating track.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars I am torn on this book.......2007-09-24

It does have some great tips, and instructions on copying clothes etc. but one cannot deny that many of the "secrets" are indeed dated. For example, I can promise you that you will never need to know how to make a Double Flounce collar (page 79). Many of the designers highlighted here hit their popularity in the 80s and much of couture sewing in general (but especially couture of 20+ years ago) is just not relevent to every day style. Definitely use the "Search Inside" feature to see what I mean. Still, it is not very expensive and I believe that overall there is enough in here to warrant having it in my library.

4 out of 5 stars great idea book.......2007-07-27

The book is good. The service fast. -just not exactly what I had expected for the type of book.

4 out of 5 stars If you're still learning about sewing - BUY This book.......2007-03-30

There's a lot of books out thee - but if you're still learning a lot of the more advanced tricks - BUY THIS BOOK. Seriosuly - I am usually happy to get half a dozen new ideas out of a book - usually makes up for what I spend - but that is all this book is about. New Tips and Tricks.

I was estatic to see some of the coat lining techniques used in one of my Amrmani coats broken down and described so well. Its like "OH Ok - thats how its down" Its full of stuff like that.

Maybe if you've been sewing for 30+ years and have a college degree in fashion - you might know everything from cover to cover already - but if your a still new or an intermediate still learning - this book is an ideal find.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-03-17

This book packs in so many tips and techniques! The author could have written 10 books with all the material in it. This book is geared towards advanced sewing, and would be over the head of anyone looking for basic information. In addition to an unbelivable amount of information on finishing details, there is a section on pattern making. I thought this was kind of an odd subject change, but if you're doing advanced sewing, there does come a time when you just can't find what you need in a comercial pattern. I really liked this book, and would recommend it for anyone moving to the next level in sewing.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Stuff.......2007-03-09

This book is much more basic than Shaeffer's Couture book, and some of the style and design suggestions are a bit dated (copyright is 1997), but all basic instructions can be applied to more current and/or trendy styles and details, with just a bit of imagination and determination. Excellent construction, no matter how "now" your design may be, will always add that bit of flair, so the book is helpful in improving and adapting your sewing skills to produce garments that avoid that "home made" look.

Book Description

America , how well do you know your history?

In his Farewell Address, Ronald Reagan said if we forget what we have done, we will forget who we are. This book, written by one of Reagan's most loyal lieutenants, responds to Reagan's heartfelt call for an informed patriotism.

We all need to know more about this land we love. In this gripping tale of a nation, our country's past comes alive. Here is the story of those we chose to lead us and what they did with the awesome power we gave them. Join Bill Bennett for the great adventure. America's teacher will lead you on a voyage of discovery.

What others are saying:

"William J. Bennett artfully and subtly makes connections between our past and current events, reminding us ... that we are intimately and immediately connected to the extraordinary Americans who have bestowed upon us our great heritage.... [T]he importance of America: The Last Best Hope probably exceeds anything Dr. Bennett has ever written, and it is more elegantly crafted and eminently readable than any comprehensive work of history I've read in a very long time. It's silly to compare great works of history to great novels, but this book truly is a page-turner.... Prepare to have your faith in, hope for, and love of America renewed."
-Brad Miner, American Compass

"The Role of history is to inform, inspire, and sometimes provoke us, which is why Bill Bennett's wonderfully readable book is so important. He puts our nation's triumphs, along with its lapses, into the context of a narrative about the progress of freedom. Every now and then it's useful to be reminded that we are a fortunate people, blessed with generations of leaders who repeatedly renewed the meaning of America."
-Walter Isaacson, Benjamin Franklin: An American Life

"For too long Americans have been looking for a history of our country that tells the story of America's triumphs as well as its tragedies. Now Bill Bennett has come forward with America: The Last Best Hope, which tells the story-fairly and fully-from 1492 to 1914. Americans who have been reading recent biographies of the Founding Fathers will love this book."
-Michael Barone, US News & World Report

"Bill Bennett's book will stand as perhaps the most important addition to American scholarship at this, the start of the new century. For the past fifty years American historians have either distorted American history or reduced it to a mess of boring indictments of our cultural and political heritage. With this book Bennett offers to Americans young and old an exciting and enjoyable history of what makes America the greatest nation on earth.
-Brian Kennedy, president, The Claremont Institute

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good general coverage on US History.......2007-10-02

Many reviews state this book is void of great detail and only scratches the surface. Bear in mind it's a two volume set on the entire history of the US. How detailed could you be in just too volumes. I contend the book serves its purposes wonderfully. Yes, it's concise but a pleasure to read and a great refresher on the History we were taught in our high schools days. I wouldn't expect the book to go into exhaustive detail as the book is on US general history. I'd use this book as path to lead me to explore US history topics in greater detail. I like the un-political correctness usually taught these days - poor Indians, white man bad, stealing of lands from Mexico, Jefferson and Washington were terrible because they were slaveholders... The injustices taught nowadays can go on and on. But this book does not conform and gives us something we should truly be proud about - our heritage. The author is proud of his heritage as he conveys it. He uses humor and whit while the book moves along keeping the readers attentions. Its refreshing to read a positive view our history. My only negative is that this book does have some obvious spelling and grammar error better editing should have been used. The "story" is told of the founding and existence of a great country. It will undoubtedly leave the reader more proud than when he/she starting reading. And rightfully so! We live in a great country of rich history. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars I actually LOVE history now........2007-09-23

I never wanted to learn history. Seemed boring. I opened this book and now can't put it down. It's so wonderful to learn these things and be able to relate them to our lives today. This should be a mandatory book for all students.
Thanks Bill!

5 out of 5 stars History at its best.......2007-09-10

I bought this book after reading volume II, which I also loved. History is one of my weakest areas - I was never good at memorizing names and dates and am embarrassed about my lack of knowledge. Bennett makes American history come alive. After you read it, you feel like you know the previous presidents and their contemporaries personally. There is sometimes a little repetition between chapters, perhaps that was intentional. Other reviewers said that this book reads like a novel. Perhaps not as "quick" as a novel, but it's really a pleasure to read. Both volumes were so good I would read them again.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Review of American History.......2007-09-04

Mr. Bennett not only provides a well researched and documented review of American History but makes it a pleasure and entertaining to read! I bought it to read and can't pull it away from my 18 year old son who doesn't like to read... until now!

5 out of 5 stars Something has to be done....................2007-08-28

to rebuff the garbage written in the mandated leftist history books forced upon teachers. There may be mistakes in this book, but not nearly so many as in today's current crop of leftist propaganda.

I never ceased to be amazed by the leftist America-hating perverts who use the rights given to them by their Constitution to rage against the very system that gave them every right and freedom of life we all enjoy. I have to be honest, I despise these people for ruining the greatest free country in the history of the earth. I see it slip farther and farther into the depths as every day goes by and I mourn for our youth as the leftists, atheists, and other perverts dismantle our freedom and attempt to rebuild our country with their own "values".
