This book was OK, but contained a lot of material that appeared to be directly drawn from the work of Covey and Robbins. The main points were repeated over and over again to the point of boredom. Probably a very good read to someone who hasn't already read similar works, but less than enlightening for anyone who has.

Great book, one of the best I've read in a while .......2007-09-03
I consider myself fairly well read when it comes to investing, but I was really suprised by this book.
I've poured through books by and about Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger, Jim Rogers, some of the new classics (Market Wizards by Schwager) and some of the old classics that never go out of style (Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, Money Game). I was actually just browsing through my local bookstore when I saw this.
Fisher's well known for his advertising. His ads though, and his style turned me off (somewhat analogous to a doctor that advertises on a bus stop or a lawyer advertising in the back of a phone book, you just don't quit trust it).
He's got some real gems in here though. The book could have been about 150 pages shorter, but the essence of it, that the only way to beat the market is to know something that others don't, is spot on.
If you answer his 3 questions before investing (especially #3, what is your brain doing to mess you up), you'll be well ahead of the game.
It's amazing that people will invest huge sums of money in the market, and not even know what the biases are that cause misjudgement. Fisher does a beautiful job of reducing things down to "primitive man", and what was great for hunter gatherers 50,000 years ago hunting lions is terrible for your portfolio.
Still, I think the book falls into some traps that most other investment books fall into:
-Some of it is too neat, too ivory tower, too clean and mathematical. There's no people in the book, there are no memories.
For example, he thinks stocks have no correlation to past results. The odds of a stock moving tomorrow up or down are 50-50.
But investors have memories. Investors got scarred for life after the '29 crash, they never felt the same way about stocks again. I don't think stocks have a 50-50 chance of moving up or down after that. It also doesn't take into account where companies are in their life cycle. It doesn't take into account competitive advantage (or lack thereof).
-A direct quote from the book..."Since 1926, there have been 66 15 year rolling time periods. In 61 of them (92%), stocks beat bonds, returning an average of 481% while bonds returned 150%"
He then adds to the arguement, and basically says stocks always outperform bonds, buy stocks. But most people get into stocks at the wrong time! There's no mention of valuation, there's no mention that people buy stocks when everyone else is buying them.
People can and do lose money...if you bought stocks in the mid 20's or later, you didn't break even for 20 years. If you bought stocks during the raging bull market of the 60's and held, you got killed. The DOW was at 700 in the early 60's and 800 in the early 80's, after some grueling declines. Business Week ran their famous (infamous) cover in 1979, "The Death of Equities". People were putting their retirement money into gold and diamonds back then.
People do not buy stocks equally during all time periods. There's some other arguements made that can be a little dangerous. Some of the arguement made about the deficit, the declining dollar, I don't know.
Fisher is obviously brilliant, he's on the Forbes 400, but no one should be above questioning or critical thinking. Absolutely come to your own conclusions. I don't think some of the arguements will hold up in 15-20 years.
But still, it's well worth adding to your library. Some of the key chapters should be re-read many times to get all the nuances.
No real help here!.......2007-09-03
Fisher describes a number of interesting stock market fallacies and why they should be ignored in any serious investing plan, and also illustrates some common emotional problems that plague a large percentage of investors. He describes several admittedly outdated fundamental indicators which, although possibly of some academic interest, are no longer useful, as they now have been discounted by the market.
He suggests that the individual investor select an index and track his or her performance with respect to this index, presumably taking advantage of knowing what most other investors do not. Most unfortunately, the methodology of attaining this precious knowledge is not made clear, at least to me. If an investor knows important details about equity issues that are not generally known, then he or she has no need of this book!
The writing style of Fisher, while occasionally entertaining, contains a good deal of self-serving statements, and, as commented by others, the basic information could be provided by perhaps one quarter the number of pages.

I've read a lot of finance books in my day but this one takes a whole other approach. Instead of the same old conventional methods of analyzing the stock market through ratios and fundamentals, this book takes you through how to look at the market differently. The Only Three Questions shows you the power of sentiment on the market and specifically how to gauge investor sentiment and use it to your advantage. While the book is full of data and graphs, it also is a surprisingly humorous and enjoyable read. If you're looking for a completely different investment strategy, this book is for you.
Needed an editor.......2007-08-26
A well constructed book cries out for discipline, particularly one dealing with investment. There is little discipline here, and this may stem from the way it was written. It reads in a disjointed, jaunty, disconnected way, very much as if dictated while working out on treadmill. Also hard to say what role the other two writers had in the making of the book.Aside from being far too long for the wisdom the book imparts, and it does provide some interesting insights, there are some rather questionable conclusions that other reviewers have pointed out, such as the irrelevance, presumably, of US debt, of debt in general. He makes light of other methods of selecting stocks, such as (his own) discovery of the importance of the price to sales ratio. His advice is, on the whole, fairly vague. One gets out of the market when one knows more than others.... Right. But the tables and graphs are well worth perusing, more than once. On that basis I reconsider and would recommend the book to those who have a fair amount of investing experience. Not for beginners!
Think before you act.......2007-08-23
Managing money is not my strong suit. Because I don't have any in the first place. This may explain why I am right now so "house-rich and cash-poor". I therefore bought this book out of sheer curiosity. How do "big predators" behave? How do they reach their ultimate goal: BEATING THE MARKET ?
M. Ken Fisher gives us a clear, perfectly documented answer ( think before you act), thereby debunking some hard-dying myths like the "gold haven". M. Fisher's book is crystal clear, strongly worded, often very funny and on the whole totally convincing. I simply love the visuals. I recommend without reservation this book to any investor trying like me to avoid a further decline of his (hardly worth mentioning) savings.
Even with Mr. Fisher's invaluable assistance, I will probably never beat the market. But I might want to take advantage of his most interesting tips: watch for prospective buy-outs !

the greatest calclulus text ever written ,...EVER.......2007-07-26
How can anyone possible B*tch at such an amazing book. Clear, insightful, helpful, relevant etc...etc.... don't forget that the author threw in proofs for anyone who wants to be math major. O did I mention how f-in clear this text is. Here's the deal, people who don't like this book fall into two categories: wannabe engineers who hate the fact that they have to take calculus in the first place and math majors/mathematicians who say that not enough theory is covered, well duh that's why the course called "advanced calculus" was invented. Let's face the fact's fokes, there is a reason why community colleges and ivy league schools alike use this text because its student friendly and is designed with COMMEN sense, something I might add is lacking in the mathematical community but definitely not lacking in this book.

Comprehensive look at Calculus.......2007-02-17
So far, only four chapters into the text, Calculus: Early Transcendentals appears to be a well-rounded introduction to Calculus. The text is arranged in a familiar manner where information can be readily found. The only bad thing I have to say about it thus far is that it doesn't always explain steps in its example problems in as much detail as I would sometimes like.

While a huge Patterson fan, this book was disappointing. We get three half-formed antagonists and a shiftless plot. More alarming, the ratio of mystery to melodrama is starting to head in the same direction that Patricia Cornwell did--not a positive development.
1st to Die was a taut, well-paced, page-turner. Sadly, this one seemed kinda tired and formulaic.

I agree with the other reviews. I was eagerly waiting for the next instalment of the murder club and I wanted to throw the book across the room in disgust. Where was the excitement, the suspense - the feeling that you can't put the book down until you know. James Patterson re-read the first 4 books and give us something the rivals those books or don't bother.

This was, in my opinion, the worst Patterson book I've read...and I've read almost all of them. He is putting out so many books with so many co-authors lately, I doubt he has time to read or edit them thoroughly. He's too busy counting his money. Jokes aside, The 6th Target is not worth the time or money!

A very thought-provoking book for people trying to grow their business........2007-10-02
This was a very interesting book for me to read. I have to imagine that I am in a pretty narrow target market for this book, though the concepts may be broadly applied. I work for a small business and can see many opportunities to put this book's findings to work.
The book tells the various stories of companies that made a transition from a market participant to market leader and saw sustained success for at least 15 years. The author was able to identify a few common factors between these companies, and he and his research team present them as a model for us to follow.
I had but one small issue, which is probably not information that contributes to the rest of the research. They detail radical decisions made by upper management, sometimes completely changing the face of an established business. I figure there must be a largely disproportionate number of business that fail when they made the same or a similar move. I would have liked to see some detail behind how those successful companies came to make that decision. The decision itself was largely overlooked.
Like many "business" books, I feel that much of what was written here was largely common sense. They weren't necessarily ideas that I have had or would have come up with on my own, but as I read them they seemed mundane in analysis. It made the reading slow going, but there was a silver lining -- for instant gratification, each chapter ends with a few pages of main concepts extracted from the text.
There was some very insightful research in Good to Great. The common elements identified were relevant and practical. It would not be an easy model to follow, but if it were it would defeat its own purpose to isolate those corporate characteristics that set successful companies apart. If you have ever wondered what steps you should follow to take your company from Good to Great, this is a book you should read (even if it is just the chapter summaries).

Our company is taking the advice of the book to heart. We have formed our "hedgehog" group and all are excited. We want to work in an environment of greatness. The book shows us the way. We have 7 of our employees who have agreed to "donate their time" at lunch several times a month to help us identify our circles. I enjoyed the thought provoking aspect of this book. The different levels of leadership, the hedgehog concept are the two takeaways from this book.
How many of us fall into the trap of being everything to everyone? Most I suspect from the findings presented in the book.
Read this book to find out how you can strive to be a Level 5 leader. I found the book very insightful. Jim Collins and his team hit a homerun!
Renamed the "Leadership Bible".......2007-09-19
In a previous review I dubbed a Blanchard text as the Management Bible. Good to Great goes one step further. It teaches how to lead. Leadership is very different from management. Management is about details and processes. Leadership is about creating a storyline, then using it to motivate, overcome, and exceed. Good to Great by Jim Collins is about greatness.
The key to the "greatness storyline" is in identifying your Hedgehog Concept- that singular objective that will define your success. This also the most difficult part of leadership, an ability which most titled executives do not master. It is very easy to fall prey to the excuse that we "don't know what the future may bring" and we have to be "ready for anything". Hog wash. Or should I say hedgehog wash?
Greatness can only be achieved through singular purpose. The core of Good to Great teaches us not only how to identify it (the hedgehog Concept), but how to embrace it. The remainder of the book tells us how to apply it in broad strokes. This is the essence of strategic planning. Being able to understand and acheive this should be a prerequisite for any leadership position. Or for any aspiring entrepreneur.

I usually devour James Patterson books and I particularly like his collaborations with other authors. Tried as I might, I could not finish this book. I can usually finish his books in a day or two...I would read three pages and have to stop. I got to somewhere in the 200s and decided it's just not worth it. Huge disappointment...but I do recommend The Quickie and You've Been Warned.
A waste of a great talent!.......2007-09-14
For the first time since "Fourth of July", I have read a James Patterson book. I have tried a couple of others but did not even finish them, since I found them so bad.
"Step on a Crack" together with co-writer Michael Ledwidge is fast-paced, witty and rather entertaining. In spite of the seriousness of the content of the book, the authors manage to give readers quite a few laughs with their sarcastic revellation of celebrity vanity. (A funeral IS a sad event, but oh boy, all those cameras sure are hard to resist!)
The story in this book is not really far-fetched in this time of terrorism. But still. Isn't it all a little bit too smooth? Too racy? Too fantastic? The distance between the private life of NYPD Detective Michael Bennett and his ten children, and his job, is big. It's got to be. However, even the NYPD and the FBI are human. As are the celebrities behind their well groomed facades.
To me, the weakness of this book is the feeling it gives of being a cleverly constructed shell which lacks the depth and insight to make both the people and the story credible. All, except Detective Bennett and his brood.
Although this book was passable, to me James Patterson has turned into an author of streamlined superman/science fiction-like/plastic coated "best sellers" which do not manage to capture my full attention nor creep into my heart.
I know many disagree with me, but in his earlier authorship there was a James Patterson who managed to enthrall, make it all come alive. Made me want his books never to end. The James Patterson I loved and badly miss.
James Patterson has a rare and unique talent. It's sad that these days he seems to have chosen to manufacture books instead of writing them. What a waste of a great talent!

With this book, Patterson adds another author to his list of collaborators, and the result is pretty encouraging. Ledwige's influence on the novel results in a plot that even though not overly realistic, keeps us engaged in the story until the last page. On top of this, certain elements, like the busy family life of the main characters, give the story a nice balance between the police case at hand and the everyday problems that each of us face.
Everything starts when the Neat Man participates in the murder of former first lady Catherine Hawkins. The key to this event is that everyone assumes it was an accident, since she died from an allergic reaction to peanuts. The fact that no one suspects foul play is crucial for the next step of the plan, which is so craftily and precisely laid out that the police will be constantly on their toes.
Catherine's funeral attracts a variety of wealthy an influential people to St. Patrick's. When a group of men take control of the church, and keep a select number of hostages, the police and FBI are thrown into one of the most difficult sieges in history. The fact that the ringleader of the kidnappers, the obnoxious Jack, seems to always be a step ahead, does not simplify things. Mike Bennett is an NYPD detective that works as a negotiator and is involved in the situation from the start. But this is only part of Mike's problems, since his wife has terminal cancer, and he has to take care of his ten kids. Yes, you read right, it is not a typo; ten kids. Imagine that!
Even though the plot has some portions that are unrealistic, this novel does not have the problems other Patterson's books have had in the recent past. The story is cohesive and flows well, keeping us entertained throughout its duration. I admit that the idea of the ten kids may be a little over the top, but I enjoyed how this worked together with the rest of the story. Also, in this novel I found something that I thought Patterson had lost and that I remembered from the early Alex Cross books: clever, ruthless and believable villains. Finally, the hostage situation, allowed the authors to spend some time on character development, which in my opinion has been one of the main faults in some of Patterson et al latest works, like "The 6th Target".
This is not a literary masterpiece, but if you have read Patterson before you know that this is not something the author is shooting for. What this novel delivers is a fun and enjoyable experience, and that is enough to make it worth reading.
too much AND too little.......2007-08-22
As a life-long fan of James Bond flics, I don't require perfect credibility in my light entertainment, but this is too much - or too little -- even for me.
Here's our newest Patterson super-hero, Mike and his 10 kids and his dying wife. Obviously he needs 10 kids. With the Alex Cross books, Patterson learned that you can never have too many family members around to waste in times of crisis. (And, BTW, the Bennetts would never, ever have gotten 10 infants, each with 10 fingers and 10 toes, out the NY social services system, no matter how angelic Maeve might be. Nor do they seem to have the income to purchase infants. So I guess the Adoption Stork just loves the Irish.)
Oh, speaking of the Irish, there's Mike - super-trained superhero - losing it, totally, when a priest gets shot. But no, we can't be too critical. After all, his grandfather - his Irish grandfather -- is a priest.
Of course he is. Don't you hate when that happens?
And just how super is this super-hero??? Not only is he the hostage negotiator (even with FBI pros on-site), and not only is he the only one with the balls to shoot back at crunch-time (this time with Men in Black on site -- and why doesn't the loving father of 10-children-about-to-lose-their-mother behave with a bit of caution?), BUT he's also the only one who can address the media. In all of Manhattan, all of NYC, the eastern seaboard, a post-9/11 America, there's only Mike. What a guy.
And the setting! Last year Robert Tanenbaum - the empty name on the good Karp books/the guilty name on the bad ones - gave us a hostage stand-off in St Patrick's, and in 2000, Nelson Demille did it before either of them. I know it's big and in NYC, but geez, folks, how about a little variety, if there's no veracity on offer? Clearly Patterson, et al., is way too busy cranking them out to read the competition.
But, credibility aside, it is a zippy read, yes it is.

Great book for learning about trading stocks.......2007-10-02
Jim Cramer's book is full of usefull and sound advice about investing in stocks. All his rules make common sense and should be easy for anyone to apply in thier own investing. Discipline is the key, and he stresses that. He didn't become a multi-millionaire and get his own show on CNBC by being a dummy. No one can be right all the time, and Cramer is no exception, but he is right much more than he is wrong. And that is all you need to make alot of money on Wall Street. Dont listen to the Cramer haters out there, THEY KNOW NOTHING!!! and will never come close to duplicating Cramer's investing success.
Great Book for any Investor........2007-10-01
I am just starting to dabble in the stock market so I'm trying to learn as much as I can right now.
This book is very easy to understand and a very fast read. Being a really big fan of Cramer already this was a 'no-brainer', and although he is very educated he really translates his thoughts and advice in an easy to understand way.
I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in the stock market.

Not much value on my side reviewing this book for the hundreds time. What's the take away?
I've been investing in stocks for nearly 20 years, with at least so much success that I keep with it, more or less. The difference is now I get why stocks move or don't (at least much more than I did before). And this book (and his show) is key to that. Awesome guiding priciples, rules of thumb, and market insights.
It's a fun book to read, if you have a certain level of interest in the business world, which is kind if key, of course. Many good laughs! I love his style (which I'm sure many might find offensive or so). But heck, it works for me. I bought both his other books as well. It's so good. The return on this "investment" can't be calculated. Hope this helps! :-)
Fundamental investing in a layman's language.......2007-09-23
Booya Jim!! This is a great book about investing using a fundamental approach. What is great is that the basics of investing are explained in a layman's language. You have to read chapter 5 to get a basic 101 on business cycles and how to exploit the cycle in buying and selling stocks.
I can list all the chapters and what they tell you about or list all the rules Jim explains - but that is rote repetition. Read chapter 4 about basics of evaluation. Jim does a wonderful job about comparing apples to apples e.g., Walgreen to RiteAid and goes into depth why he thinks what should be bought. This lesson alone is worth the price of the book for an investor starting out. Another good lesson is to evaluate the current value of a stock.
Of course, you can attend some expensive classes and get uncompreshensible instructions in an university, but for the price of the book, the value of the lessons here cannot be beaten.
In addition to business cycles, Jim gives some great insights e.g., he states that it is stupid to consider investing and trading as a dichotomy. How true! His famous buy-and-homework approach is like hearing a great 101 lesson from a Professor who also knows the real world. I haven't made any money in buying and holding. My emotions eventually have gotten hold of me. Instead, you need to know when to buy and when to sell. There are separate chapters on predicting tops and bottoms of both the market and individual stocks - again, wonderful reads.
In addition there are 40 rules about investing. Some gems are "I don't care what you paid for the stock, would you buy it now?" question to paraphrase. He gives a lot of credit to the Goddess, now his wife!
All in all, a great book and a must-have book in your investing library. I read the book almost two times so that I could reinforce the lessons, especially about valuation and business cycles. My style of investing, which has been pretty successful, is both a combination of fundamental and technical factors, while Jim's is more fundamental. But the fundamental 101s in the book is useful and should be a must background for anyone wanting to put their hard-earned money on the fire in the stock market.

Awesome Read! I've read a few investment books, but this one is the best! I've been out of the market for a bit, my old way to investing had not produced what I thought it could. Jim has turned me around and retaught what all the professors in college could not. Super fast read, and I could not thank Jim enought for sharing is expertise. I feel like a new and better invester....Homework, Homework, Homework...the Key to succuess.

A member of our book group chose this book for us. We had read Camel Club and found the characters amusing and the story OK, but Simple Genius is embarrassingly boring. The characters lack any depth, the storyline is ridiculous and not even marginally believable;and the dialogue could have been written by a first grader. Do yourself a favor and don't buy this one.

Briefly, an enjoyable "page-turner." It was hard to put down, both for the action and for the 3-dimensional main characters. Not a criticism, but the author in his credits should have given a nod to Clive Cussler.

Simple Genius, like all of David Baldacci's novels, is "simply great". This novel mixes suspence, a spy thriller, and detective mystery all into one speel-binding "edge of your chair" masterpiece. I couldn't stop listening to the un-abridged audio CD set. Great audio book. Recommended to all that enjoy this type of novel or this author.

Unlike many others I found this novel to be an engaging work. The duel mystery along with the little genius and others attached also made it quite compelling. I found all of his books to be well written and have never found one to be a flop. The final pages bringing the story to a end was very well done and explained all that had been left hanging. We all have our opinions and mine is a fine book I recommend to all.

I really like the way this book is presented. It provides a really concise yet complete overview of the disabilities most commonly encountered. I also like the pages in the back of each chapter that give teaching strategies in respect to the disability discussed. This is a great book for general educators looking for some information on disabilities and for those beginning to learn about special education. This book gives a great foundation for all the other special education courses that follow it. Great book!
Error found in Chapter 1.......1999-02-16
I found question 12 on page 5 of the Chapter 1 review to be true. The author of the study guide lists the answer as false. The question is taken word by word from page 40 of the text book.

Although this book has an intersting premise,it is a difficult book to read.It is written in essay form,and the author's style is not flowing or easy to read.However the content is interesting and does make you think about how we got where we are to-day:by losing sight of,and forgetting the past and important peope in it.
You can read this book a chapter at a time, and leave it for a while since each chapter is an essay on one person.it is not a novel,but a collection of essay/biographies, and includes some very intersting people
Absolutely Must Reading.......2007-09-15
In fairness, I had never heard of Clive James until he appeared on Bill Moyers Journal on PBS. I was just blown away and ordered this book the next day. If you want to understand Western culture ... I mean truly understand the culture in which you live, you should read this book. What you learn here is that a whole lot of people you never heard of and a few you have made monumental contributions that you didn't know about. This is the kind of book every person should have in their library as a reference. You can read it at leisure and you should. You should savor it.

If you never studied French, German, Italian or Spanish, you will be sorry you didn't. You will be made aware of all you are missing because you can not read the all those untranslated or untranslatable important writers that are fundamental to our civilization. If you know them you will see that for English speakers is very difficult not to be confused by Spanish and Italian. I have found misspelled Spanish words because the Italian spelling was used in the wrong place. Clive James is almost pushing me to start again with German, French and Italian.

just found what I've read so far very digressive and convoluted. He is a much better speaker than writer. haven't given it a full read, but am daunted by the many digressions from the points I'm interested in. don't care about 10 other people whom I may or may not know who really don't have relevance to the person I'm reading about.
Unsurpassed both for content and style.......2007-09-01
This is an amazing book. Clive James was only a dim sound in my limited background before the book was presented to me as a present. When I finished this book, I made the unusual promise to myself to read it again, an unusual decision since I am not thoroughly committed to modern writing and have found nothing that quite measures up to it, either traditional or modern. The essays, it is made clear, were not written at the same time, but were the accumulation of some years of reading and study. The casual reader will be introduced to a number of people hitherto unknown or barely known, mixed in with giants like Tacitus, Keats, Proust, Kafka, the three Manns,and Camus. I cannot ignore James's prose style, which astonishes minute by minute. A must-read for anybody interested in history and the arts.
