Enchanting way to pass hours on the road.......2007-08-26
My daughters, ages six and eight, love these well produced radio dramas based on the C.S. Lewis classics. And I must say, my wife and I enjoy them as much or more than the kids.
We've found the series especially enjoyable on long road trips. Being audio-only, it keeps the children entertained, while allowing them to enjoy sights of our cross-country trips.
Now when we take long car trips, it has almost become tradition that we also journey through the enchanted land of Narnia using this great series.
FANTASTIC.......2007-08-08
Outstanding production, great cast, great music. One of the best audio drama's I have heard, and it was a hoot to see the grandkids sitting around the cd player(taking the place of an Atwater-Kent)getting lost in this fantasy world.Kids dont "need" to watch TV, just give them a great alternative! Highly recommended!!
Chronicles of Narnia (Radio Theatre).......2007-08-01
This is an excellent audio production of all the books from the Chronicles of Narnia. The sound effects and music are great. The production follows what was written by C. S. Lewis very accurately. These are great to listen to on long drives or commuting to work.
Fantastic Escapism!.......2007-07-22
Full cast, amazing sound, great stories - I have listened to these so many times now, total escapism for a typical Pisces!
Cronicles of Narnia CD collection.......2007-06-27
This CD collection is outstanding. On a 22 hour car ride, my 4 son's and I listened to it and all of us loved it! Just as entertaining for adults as it is for children. F.O.F made Cronicles come alive, much more exciting than hearing a book read, these let your imagination run wild. Also very interesting to have C.S. Lewis' step son introducing the production and giving some insight. Top quality production. Amazing value!!!! Highly recommended!!!

Book Description
The first four books of the wildly popular Time Warp Trio series are now in one value-priced boxed set! Whether the gang's fighting off the Black Knight in the middle of Camelot, practicing magic tricks on Blackbeard and his pirates, stampeding cattle in the Old West, or running from a woolly mammoth, one thing is for sure: no one's ever bored when the Time Warp Trio's around!
Customer Reviews:
Knights are Meant to be Respected.......2006-12-19
I didn't like Time Warp Trio because when it began it was mostly about the knight. As you read on, it tells about the giant and the dragon. It made the knight look not very smart and like he had no power. The kids basically looked like they had all the power, even without armor. If I were the author, I would have had more action with the knight and the kids and the knight would have been the greatest fighter or he would have been up there with the greatest heroes. -LL
Poor langauge and inappropriate humor.......2005-12-31
I was very shocked when I read this book to find that so many people deem these appropriate for children. They do have some information for the kids to learn from (the reason I chose them originally) but the way the children talk and act is terrible! I had only thumbed through one and chose it from the library from my son, then I let him read the rest of the series and suddenly had him calling names and being disrespectful and LAUGHING about it!
I was really disappointed. I think things can be funny without name calling and using poor language. I am just glad I haven't ever purchased any.
A little too much like magic tree house.......2005-09-01
These books are really nice, but my daughter has already read a bunch of the magic tree house books and these are just too much like them.. she thinks these are funnier but the idea has no sparkle for her any more.. but I would recommend these books if you haven't started reading the tree house series..
Let's Do the Time Warp Again.......2004-09-23
I was going through some old books the other day when I happened upon my "Time Warp Trio" collection. What began as thumbing through "Knights of the Kitchen Table" ended with my reading all four of the stories right then and there. They were terriffic when I was little and they are terriffic now.
Great for boys!.......2004-03-26
It's hard to find books for boys that really turn them on to reading but these did the trick. My son insisted that I read them too so we could talk about the plots. Entertaining and well written, perfect for a second or third grader.

Book Description
Interspersed with charts, graphs, and various crossword puzzles, A Book of Noisy Outlaws, Evil Marauders, and Some Other Things . . . features some of today's best authors spinning new tales ranging from the spooky to the strange. George Saunders tells the story of a father who takes caution to dangerous extremes in "Lars Farf, Excessively Fearful Father and Husband." In "ACES by Phone," a small boy finds a cell phone that lets him listen in on the thoughts of dogs, and in "Small Country," Nick Hornby introduces a country too small for a postal system but, unfortunately for one bookish boy, just big enough for a football team. Each story features full-color illustrations by artists including Barry Blitt, Lane Smith, David Heatley, and Marcel Dzama.
The collection includes previously unpublished children's stories from Jonathan Safran Foer (Everything is Illuminated), Nick Hornby (High Fidelity), Neil Gaiman (Sandman), George Saunders (CivilWarLand in Bad Decline), Kelly Link (Stranger Than Fiction), and Jon Scieskza (Stinky Cheese Man). The dust jacket folds into a unique aerogram, which factors into a special contest involving a story written partly by Lemony Snicket, partly by thousands of children.
Customer Reviews:
A great collection of short stories for young readers.......2007-01-15
After hearing Nick Hornby read his short story "Small Country" on NPR, I had to pick up this book. I was not disappointed. The stories are odd, humorous, and a bit-off center, but they are also immensely enjoyable. The themes are geared primarily towards younger readers (stories about parents leaving for Peru, monsters at summer camp, over protective fathers - you get the idea), with a tongue-in-cheek parody about them that is reminiscent of Lemony Snicket (who, in fact, wrote the introduction.)
Most stories are sure to be a hit with the grade 3 - 6 crowd; the final story by Jonathan Safran Foer ("The Sixth Borough") is a bit less kid-friendly, but the collection as a whole is a fun read. Highly recommended for young readers.
great book.......2007-01-08
My 10 year old daughter absolutely loved this book. She was a bit intimidated by the title initially , so I started off reading her the stories. We both were intrigued and read the whole book together. I thought is was so good , when we finished, I gave the book to our school library for other kids to read - my daghter nearly killed me for giving it away!
The scary, the funny, and the just plain weird.......2006-01-11
Take some excellent, renowmed writers, have them write a collection of stories for kids, and this is what you get. An eclectic, fun, sometimes creepy mix of tales that those of all ages are likely to enjoy.
While writers like Nick Hornby and Neil Gaiman contribute, the best effort comes from Kelly Link, in his tale titled, "Monster." Although written for children, this is one of the funniest short stories I've read in quite some time - funny, scary, straightforward in its telling - and it's the highlight of an outstanding collection.
The only thing that keeps me from giving this 5 stars is the fact that there are a couple of weak stories that hurt the overall collection. Still, I'd highly recommend this for readers of any age. You might not like every story, but I guarantee that there will be several that catch your fancy.
sweet.......2005-12-06
The general impression is that it's a collection of stories that the authors would have like to read when they were kids. Some of them may be scary to the announced age group (4-7) but most are just sweet. For the adult many of them will remind the reader how it was to be a kid. And for the kid, this will make them feel vindicated for many injustices they suffer, like the loud mean boy that everybody likes, over-controlling parents, and having to play sports when they really don't want to.
The funniest part was the introduction by Lemony Snicket. I'd like to know how Paul Revere did wrong by him.
Enertaining.......2005-11-04
The collection of stories is a must read for fans of intelligent young adult stories. Even the introduction, by Lemony Snicket, poking fun of books that are more mundane (with a terrific nod to Harry Potter) is a great read. I liked Gaiman's and Hornby's stories.

THE MOST FANTASTIC BOOK YOU'LL EVER READ!!!!!!.......2004-04-25
It all starts out with someone I really would call a "Not so Jolly Roger." They have pistols, daggars and lots of cool weapons in this book. (Violent). Something always goes wrong-wich always happens in books-of course. Get this book or I'll be "The not so Jolly Roger."
The not so Jolly Roger.......2003-05-02
I liked The not so Jolly Roger becuase it was a mystery and I love myseries. My favorite part was when Fred was reading a book and Fred got sucked into one of the pages. The not so Jolly roger could be better by taking out the part when a pirate shoots his mates after they got done buring the treasure they found. Iread the story becuase in the first book of the series, it was really interesting,so it made me think The not so Jolly Roger was going to be interesting.

"Buy it"!.......2003-04-03
I really like the Time Warp Trio series. My Grandma Kathy gave me books #1 through #10 for my birthday. So far, they have been very interesting and FUN to read! I am hoping that my younger brother and sister will enjoy them as much as I do.
The Not So Jolly Roger.......2002-10-29
We think the book, the Time Warp Trio The Not So Jolly Roger is funny and packed with adventure. In this story the three boys Joe,Fred, and Sam go in the magic book in the time of Black Beard the pirate. In the beginning they see a ship with three big cannons aimed right at them. The boys hurry up and climb coconut trees to escape. From the top they spy Black Beard on the ship.Trying to get down, they get stuck in the trees. After they get down from the trees, the three boys see Black Beard and his treasure. Two of the pirates were going to take it, but Black Beard saw them and shot them. Black Beard then thought the trio were going to try and steal his treasure.
Will the boys ever find the book and get home? If you want to find out, read this book.

Ages 10 & up. In the spirit of Madeleine L'Engle's classic A Wrinkle in Time, this is a fascinating and powerfully involving story about two lonely kids who are inadvertently caught up in the never-ending battle between good and evil. The problems of everyday adolescent life and the mysteries of magic are perfectly blended, along with plenty of humor and suspense. In a starred review, School Library Journal wrote, "well-structured and believable... this fantasy should have wide appeal." Horn Book wrote, "a splendid, unusual fantasy... an outstanding, original work."
Book Description
Something stopped Nita's hand as it ran along the bookshelf. She looked and
found that one of the books had a loose thread at the top of its spine. It was one of those So You Want to Be a . . . books, a series on careers. So You Want to Be a Pilot, and a Scientist . . . a Writer. But his one said, So You Want to Be a Wizard.
I don't belive this, Nina thought. She shut the book and stood there holding it in
her hand, confused, amazed, suspicious--and delighted. If it was a joke, it was a great one. If it wasn't . . . ?
Customer Reviews:
Read this when you've grown out of Harry Potter.......2007-08-29
This is a magical book, in a magical universe with magical characters and real tears. This is a classic, the sort that I always have a copy of, the sort that I give to my kids.
Weighty Description.......2007-04-24
Nita is a thirteen-year-old who just wants the local bully to leave her alone. She is tired of being chased and of being beaten up, and she is especially tired of having to explain to her family why she doesn't fight back. When she stumbles acros a book called "So You Want to be a Wizard" in her public library, Nita is intrigued. She doesn't quite believe in wizardry, but she checks out the book and decides to give it a try. She will do anything to keep the bully from hurting her again, even cast a spell.
Surprisingly enough, the book seems real. Soon after she discovers it, Nita meets Kit, a boy about her age with some of the same problems. He's had a book on wizardry for awhile and she teams up with him to cast a spell to get their tormenters to leave them alone. But in the midst of the spell, something happens and a new creature appears in Kit and Nita's world.
Now Kit and Nita are trapped in a situation that seems to be way over their heads. They must stick together and work with each other to set things right again. Will they, two novice wizards, be able to fight against a dark power?
I liked Kit and Nita and the way they used their intelligence to get themselves out of bad situations. I also liked Nita's family, and I liked the way the world of magic was developed in this story. However, some parts of this book were pretty draggy; there was a lot of description I wasn't very interested in reading and that weighed the book down.
if you want to read an unbelivebly good book..........2007-01-31
this is the one! I have read the entire young wizards series and from the time I read the first book I couldn't help thinking:
"I hope this series doen't end any time soon, because I just might die when it does"
The charecters are complex, as well as the story. Through 9 books diane duane doesn't ever even give a plotly reminder of one of the books befor it. They all have their own story, adn in So You Want to be a Wizard
the story is differnt that any other book I have ever read (or just hear of, for that matter). Duane puts a spin on magic as we know it, truly creating a thriller, because no matter how many fanisy books you have read, you will have never found one where magic is executed like this. That fact makes teh book totally un-exspectable. The characters are deep, and you never find your self thinking 'why did he do that, what was he thinking!?' because duane swithces back and forth between 1st person in nitas brain(one of the two main characters) and 1st person in kits brain (the other main character). Fred, although kind of cutes, and seemingly poitless, acually turs out to be an important element in the story. (yet another un-exspected twist). The series is a stange mix of fantacy and science fiction. Although I don't like science fiction, that fatistical element makes it so weird I love it! Each book has its own unique story, and changes the lives of our young wizards forever. I reconmend this series to lovers of fantacy, science fiction, and real life novels, because the young wizards series a twisted mix of all three. I can't really find adaquit words to exsplain it.
TRULY WONDERFUL, THRU AND THRU!
NYC Wizardry.......2007-01-20
New York City, especially Manhattan island, is a popular place for paranormal activity in fiction. There are often times gates to other universes (think of the two in the Ghost Busters movies) and in So You Want to Be a Wizard, there is a gate to a very strange alternate New York. Two novice wizards, Kit and Nita, travel to this alternate New York while innocently trying to recover Nita's lost pen. Can they get home and save the world at the same time?
While the book is a fairy typical young teen discovers magic is real type of story, I quickly found myself sucked into it. I liked how easily the wizardry fit into the modern world without a separation of societies into muggles and wizards as in the Harry Potter books. Wizardry in Duane's books can be a serious occupation or a hobby or somewhere in between.
My one complaint with the book (though this is more a complaint with book two) is the amount of time Duane spends on describing the Speech, a universal language that all wizards and all things in the universe can speak except apparently human adults who have forgotten how to speak it. I like the concept of a universal form of communication but Duane's endless descriptions of how it works and how wonderful it is often time stalls the plot.
Fortunately there is enough humor and horror to keep the plot moving. On the humor side, there is Fred, an eager white hole who is excellent at making diversions for Kit and Nita. On the horror side there are the living vehicles (cars, trains, helicopters, and elevators) who are bent on killing each other and eating anything that gets in their way; I will never look at hydrants the same way again!
BEST BOOK EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-09-17
I love this book! Nita, who is bullied frequently, runs into the library. A book catches her hand-- So you want to be a wizard? is the title. This book changes her life with wizardry, leading her to her wizardly partner, Kit, and beginning the adventures of her life as she slows down the death of the universe.

Are magical powers real? Can you use them to get good grades or a date with the cutest guy at school? Sophomore Kate Morgan isn't sure, but she's willing to find out. After bringing home some books on the Salem witch trials for a research project, Kate discovers a volume she doesn't remember checking out--Spells and Charms for the Modern Witch. Intrigued, she thinks she has found a quick fix for her Valentine's Day datelessness. But after hastily casting a love spell, Kate realizes she has set a universal force in motion that not only nets her intended hottie, but every guy at school. Suddenly all the boys at Beecher Falls High have a crush on Kate. Desperate to end the curse that makes all guys love her--and consequently, all girls hate her--Kate finds a way to uncover other wannabe teen witches. But shy scholar Annie Crandall and raging riot grrrl Cooper Rivers aren't sure that they want to be a part of Kate's case of bad karma. Unless she can convince them to join her, Kate may be doomed to suffer from uncontrollable popularity forever!
Due to teenagers' unending fascination with witchcraft, So Mote It Be will undoubtedly be as well loved among adolescent Wicca fans as Silver Ravenwolf's Witches' Night Out and Cate Tiernan's Sweep series. Isobel Bird infuses her text with real Wiccan lore, authentic teen emotions, and an ending that leaves readers wanting more--all in all, an unbeatable combination. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

Unimpressive, by comparison........2004-09-30
Isobel Bird, Circle of Three: So Mote It Be (Harper, 2001)
I made the mistake of reading the first book in Isobel Bird's Circle of Three series too too after reading J. G. Passarella's fantastic novel Wither, obviously, because I read the many reviews of this book and wonder what they're talking about.
Between Amazon and various other sites, I've come across seventy-five or so reviews of So Mote It Be, and many of them adhere to the same theme: the book's treatment of wicca. And while Bird certainly takes a more knowledgeable and open-minded approach to the subject than most authors, what's done here doesn't hold half a candle to Passarella's treatment of the same material; this is Dick and Jane to Passarella's Cormac McCarthy.
That aside, I would have been more than willing to overlook the simplistic treatment of that aspect of the source material had the characters been worthwhile. Problem is, well, they're not. Bird violates rule number one of writing for kids/young adults: "don't talk down to your audience." The characters here are straight out of Sweet Valley High, both the protagonists and their nemeses, the popular kids. There's no depth whatsoever to a single character to be found here. (Granted, some of them Bird is setting up for later books, and there it's excusable. But in your main characters? Never.)
Those who found Kate an excellent role model (and again I say she would be, were she at all three-dimensional), I cannot recommend highly enough you go procure yourselves a copy of J. G. Passarella's Wither. Now. This very moment. An enthusiastic (and accurate) approach to wicca can, truly, be found in a three-dimensional character, and that character is Wendy Ward. **
Perfect Intro to Wicca.......2004-02-25
I came upon this book by accident and by the time I finished reading the series(within a week), I knew it was no accident. I just turned 13 and was already depressed about being so misunderstood. No one saw the world like I did. I grew up formulating my own beliefs, never knowing where I got them from. I was tired of being different, I felt wierd instead of unique. After I read the Circle of three series, I found Wicca and Witchcraft. I have been practicing it for almost two years now, and it has changed how I see myself. It has changed everything, but who I am, that just became so much clearer to me, and is proceeding to get clearer every day. I am so thankful to Isobel Bird's series for being there for me to find. I don't think I could of handled the introduction to Wicca without it. It was an amazing series with perfectly developed characters and real information on Wicca, not Hollywood style. There should be more teen fiction like this.
Awesome Series.......2003-07-18
I have only read the first two books in the Circle of Three series so far, but it's fast becoming one of my favorites! The characters are great and the storyline keeps you interested. I can't wait to read the rest of the books!
A good start for a great series.......2003-07-15
I had planned to write reviews for each of the Circle of Three books as I read them, but I was just too bloody eager to jump into the next one each time to sit down and type. Therefore, this is really a review of the series as a whole. I think this is appropriate, because the books actually tell one story in 15 parts.
I picked up "So Mote it Be" at the library because I'd been saying for years that there should be some Wiccan fiction for teens and young adults and figured that I should give this a shot. I was fully expecting to be as disappointed as I was by Silver Ravenwolf's "Witches' Night Out", but I was very pleasantly surprised.
I am not a teen and have not been such for a few more years than I'll readily admit to in public. However, I was easily able to look past the slightly basic language and plotting. The characters seemed very alive to me almost from the beginning. I have known all these girls (even dated them all, in my younger days)
and was amazed with how well the author portrayed the girls, their trials, their triumphs, and even their not always logical thought processes. Her characters were teen girls, not children nor adults, and they almost always rang true as such.
As a Witch, however, what I was most pleased with was the presentation of Wicca. This is the Craft as it is really practiced. Perhaps, since it is so different from Witch to Witch, I should say "the way it COULD be practiced". This is not hollywood Wicca (as much as I love Buffy, the all female thing and the black-eyed thing always bug me a bit). This is so close to the true practice that an aspiring Witch could do much worse for source material. In fact, I really hope that the author decides to write a non-fiction book.
The fifteen part story follows the girls from their first fledgling steps into Magick, through training in Wicca, and finally to initiation. I think that even the purists who will say that "we don't do it that way" will have to admit that one *could* do it that way, and be drawn into the story. Just let go your preconceptions about what YOUR path is, and have fun following the Circle of Three on theirs. You'll thank me. :)
The circle is open, but never broken...
pretty good teen fare.......2003-05-06
I'm not a teenager, but this was an enjoyable read.
Good, light fare. Likeable characters, and the plot is not too outlandish.
Presented Wicca in a positive light, it might be a good way to introduce nervous family/friends to the idea that you are interested in Wicca.
Book Description
Long before wizards were a fixture on the bestseller lists, Kit and Nita were working magic with readers of all ages. In honor of the twentieth anniversary of the Young Wizards series, So You Want to Be a Wizard is now available in a deluxe hardcover edition, featuring a new afterword from Diane Duane as well as the hard-to-find Kit and Nita short story "Uptown Local."

Young Wizards Afoot.......2006-09-18
One of the fantasies that many children have is to have some kind of power. This fantasy is particularly strong when children are in elementary school and they often feel powerless or helpless. Juanita (Nita) Callahan and Christopher (Kit) Rodriguez fall into this category. Kit has been advanced a couple of grades in school, so he is teased for his intelligence and his size. Juanita tends to speak her mind, which frequently gets her in trouble with the supposedly cool crowd.
Juanita is in the library one day, hiding out from ever-present bullies, when she runs across a book titled "So You Want to Be a Wizard." At first Nita wonders whether the book is some sort of joke, or fictional. After she reads the Wizard's Oath, she soon discovers that the book is remarkable in how it keeps itself up-to-date as information about the world and the skill level of its reader changes. Nita also discovers that she has become a wizard.
Nita soon meets Kit and discovers that she is not the only wizard in the world. One of the first requirements of being a wizard is to go on an Ordeal, which has a level of difficulty that matches the power of the wizards involved. Nita and Kit are quite powerful and they go up against the Lone One in a world the Lone One made to prevent the Lone One from unmaking the entire universe. In the course of trying to keep the level of entropy in the universe at the lowest level possible, and keeping the Lone One from unmaking the universe, Kit and Nita find themselves in situations where they risk death. At one point in the book it is only through the sacrifice of two remarkable beings that Kit and Nita survive their sojourn into the Lone One's world.
While Diane Duane wrote this story about children in elementary school, I feel that it is a very mature story in many ways. This story does have a number of intense moments and may be unsuitable for some children under the age of 8 or 9. Additionally, Diane's vocabulary may present an additional hurdle for some ages. However, the story does not treat children as persons to be protected by adults and the children in the story find that they have power to affect their world. One balance Diane brought into the book is an extremely strong code of ethics. Wizards must behave very morally or bad things can happen to them.
This book is a worthy introduction to the Young Wizards series and an enjoyable read.
In this world there is no sunlight and cars have feelings and act like humans. .......2005-12-10
The book is about 2 young wizards. One was a boy, Kit and the other a girl, Nita. They both have special powers for different kinds of elements. They use a different language called Speech. They talk to their special elements using it. The boy can talk to cars and different mechanical things and becomes friends with a sports car. The girl can talk to trees and other things, that can grow. Each of them has a special manual, which is how the book got its name, So You Want To Be A Wizard? In their manual it gives them information on their element. They end up having to use their special abilities in different elements to save our world from evil.
They get transported through a portal into another world where darkness rules. It is a world just like ours, except in this world there is no sunlight and cars have feelings and act like humans. Which there is only one human when they get there. It has the same buildings and subways. They can escape only one way, the way they got there through the portal from Manhattan. Sound like fun? Taxicabs come after you and you try to find Central Park in time to save the light world from the evil one.
There are many positive points about the book. Once you get into it it's so hard to put it down you just want to keep reading. It's also a good book for people who are into wizardry and fantasy novels. It has a great ending and leads you into the next book. The author makes it easy to understand what everything is. They also give a little detail, but don't go overboard.
There are few negative points. One I really remember is that it was hard to stay interested in the beginning until it picked up. It was a bad book for anyone who hated the concept of other things beside humans talking or absolutely hates fantasy or wizardry. The last point I want to point out is that at first it was hard to know if they were talking regular, talking in speech, nonverbally talking, or just thinking.
I thought the book was very good. I would probably rate it a 4 out of 5, because the book was so good and it had a lot more positive points than negatives. I would recommend it to anybody who has read or liked Harry Potter or Charlie Bone, and anyone who likes the idea that cars, plants and other things talk, have their own language, and their own personalities. It was a very good book for what I am interested in.
More Magical than Harry Potter!.......2005-01-29
This must be one of the original books concerning young wizards living in the real world. Diane Duane has done a wonderful job portraying every character and event, almost as if it was really happening today. This book is a must read for any fan of SF-F, as is the rest of the series.
It follows Kit and Nita, two pre-teens, who have just discovered their 'manuals', appearing as books entitled 'So You Want to be a Wizard', throughout their first assignment. Unlike Harry Potter, where it is just the world that is trying to be saved, Diane Duane has created a whole universe of characters, who are fighting to stop the death of the universe. Even non-wizards can help in this sense, just by turning lights off when they leave rooms, not leaving taps running, or just by paying bills on time. It is an all inclusive world that everyone feels a part of, because it is so real.
This book, first publised in _1983_, pre-dates all of the 'mainstream' young adult fantasy novels, such as Harry Potter, or the Dark Tower, which have been published in the past few years. Its sequels, Deep Wizardry, High Wizardry, A Wizard Abroard, The Wizard's Dilemma, A Wizard Alone, A Wizard's Holiday, and the upcoming Wizards at War, are all must-reads too.
WHY AREN'T MORE PEOPLE READING THIS BOOK?!!?!?!?.......2004-08-03
This was the first book I ever read by Diane Duane, and I must say she is one of, if not THE, most talented author I have ever read. Like everything else by her that I have read, this book is very intellectually challenging and even upon rereading it recently I didn't understand everything. But who cares?! This book (the whole series, really) is unbelievably creative and breaks the mold in every possible respect. It's just. . . wow. Words can't really describe.
Unfortunately, most people who decide to read this book are going to say "Oh, this is a total ripoff of Harry Potter," upon which I would be tempted to tear their throats out. First of all, This book was first published back in 1983, FOURTEEN YEARS before Harry Potter ever grazed the shelves. And even if HP did happen to precede this series, you have to ask yourself. . . which one is better? Would you rather read about a wizard with rudimentary skills whose ultimate task is to save himself, his closest friends, and maybe eventually a country, from a mere rogue (albeit powerful) wizard, or would you prefer to read about a wizard with the potential to manipulate the very fabric of space and time whose job is to assist in the salvation of THE WHOLE OF EXISTENCE from the very manifestation of death and evil itself?!?!!? C'mon, people, even if your minds have been narrowed and rotted by delving wholeheartedly into the HP craze, you should be able to answer that.
I would like to conclude by encouraging everyone reading this to read the entire series, as well as The Book of Night With Moon and To Visit The Queen, as fast as you possibly can. I would also like to thank Ms. Duane for sharing this wonderful story with us. Although, sadly and wrongly, it will probably never achieve the acclaim and attention that HP has managed, I still wish to congratulate and thank her for showing the lucky few of us what REAL wizardry is like.
Stephen King without the potty mouth.......2004-07-17
Yep, it is pretty much the "Dark Tower" all over again. Impossible menacing objects and cliffhangers with solutions the come out of the air at the last moment to keep from painting the hero and heroine into an inescapable corner.
13 year old Nita is being zeroed in by the neighborhood girl gang. Their intention is to beat the snot out of her. In the process of evading her fate she ducks into the Library basement. Minding her own business and pawing the books one snags her. You guessed it; the title is "So You Want To Be a Wizard."
Naturally, young wizards can out wiz, out think, and out run the bad guys (maybe), in this first book of a series.

Customer Reviews:
I liked this basic book for beginner babysitters.......2007-01-16
I purchased this book for an 11 year old neice that I am hoping will be ready to babysit for my daughter in the future. I read the book and thought it was an easy and entertaining read for an 11 year old and gave lots of information about running a babysitting business. I thought it could have gone into more detail about how to relate to children or KTW (kids to watch) as the book refers to them.
Keep the age in mind.......2004-02-12
This is a well written babysitters guide. My problem with it is that it is written for 9-12 year olds and many states require that babysitters be 13 years old and have a babysitting class. If you aren't sure about your state's requirements (or didn't realize they existed), call your local department of Family and Children's Services and ask them the home-alone and babysitting age requirements.
I love it!!!! LOve it!.......2002-06-27
I liked it! It helped me, and was packed full of info! You should really get it!
Helpfull!.......2002-06-27
VERY,VERY,VERY Helpfull! On my first babysitting job I used this book, and the second time I got a raise! Get this book and you will not regret it. Full of information
Totally awesome and really helpful........2001-07-08
This book was extremely useful to me. I am a new babysitter, and this taught me a lot of things I never knew. Of course, some of the things in this book were kind of common sense, but there were a lot of things I didn't know, and that was very helpful. It has fun things like games to play and fun recipes to make. It helps to try decide how much to charge, too, and ways of advertising. I highly recommend this book to beginning babysitters. :-)
Book Description
Something was different. She stepped hesitantly out of the subway car, her boots sounding even louder now. What was it?
The graffiti. Had that been there before?
Emblazoned across the far wall in huge silver letters:
The end has come.
In New York, Kali wakes to an empty subway car, and an even emptier city. Venus and Gus survive an earthquake in Los Angeles and realize they have to deal with more than just the aftershocks. In Chile, Tigre finds himself in an unfamiliar jungle, and strangely not alone. And Amon, in Egypt, can see his path but is blind to the full picture.
They are suddenly trapped in a deserted world, five teenagers with no hope of escape. Why have they survived? What force—or intelligence—connects them? Drawn inexorably toward one another, they only know their future involves an experience outside anything they could have imagined. Fantasy newcomer Tui T. Sutherland creates a future in which teens have the power to complete the destruction of Earth—or to save it.

Stab me the heart why don't you?!.......2007-06-03
I loved this book, I really did. The idea for it was so novel that it grabbed me from the first page and whisked me all the way to the end. The only thing that bothered me was probably the stupidest reason: the book ends immediatly after the best part and here I am, waiting for my library to get the book which probably won't be until next year when I'll have to wait ANOTHER year for the third.
I want to know what happens darn it! I highly recommend this book, but perhaps wait until all of them are out and read them in a marathon.
cool.......2007-04-13
When most of the people in the world have disappeared 5 teens must get to New York. Along the way they meet members of a cult, talking birds, crystal monsters and mumbling old people.
When they get to New York the games begin! Roman gods train the teens to fight for them...to see what one will RULE THE WORLD!!!
I liked the people of the book (Venus the most). What I didn't like was to find out Venus was just like a vessel for the god Venus
I would recommend this book to fans of fast paced action/ Sci-Fi books
Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-01-13
Kali lives in New York, and has a tendency to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe. Tigre lives in Chile. He likes animals better then people, but rainstorms make him a little twitchy and he usually ends up running in them. Sort-of. Venus is a perfect teenage pop-star that everyone adores. Almost. Amon is an Egyptian boy who thinks he's got it all figured out. And Gus is a normal teenager who lives in LA with his older brother.
You'd never imagine that any of them would ever have anything to do with each other. Much less something in common. Or that there was any way that most of them would ever meet. Most of them would agree with you.
But when the world seems to end, they are the ones left standing.
I just have to say, this was a really good book. In fact, the main reason I didn't give it a Gold Award was because the ending cliffhanger was so huge and dramatic and cliffhangery that I threw the book. It's just mean to do that when I don't have access to the next book! So, I suppose I'm being selfish in withholding the Gold Award, but it's frustrating! That, however, is a horrible reason to not read this book. Just be forewarned, and maybe have the next book coming soon.
Two more things;
Aside from the fact that there is a TV show called Avatar, and a movie in production called The Avatar, neither of which have anything to do with this story, I could totally see this as a movie. *Hint, Hint*
Tui Sutherland's website is adorable and hilarious, and I definitely recommend checking it out.
And no, I don't know her, but I bet she's cool.

A pleasant read in a relatively new direction for YA........2006-11-30
Being a huge fan of post-apocalyptic survival books, this appealed to me personally and I was not let down. While the character were developed only to a certain degree, there being quite a few equally sharing the spotlight, they were all refreshingly real and relatable. From the child star to the quiet boy from Chile I was interested and involved with each one.
My only complaint was I started to get really into it and I noticed I was almost done with the book. I can understand why she would want to make a more "cliffhanger" ending but it leaves a few things unresolved, or perhaps just underdeveloped for how much it piqued my interest. I would have loved to see a deeper look into their powers and explaination to just what the heck happened with the "old guy in the raincoat."
All in all it was a great read and I can't wait to find out what happens next, as it (to avoid spoiling anything) really stopped right as the story got going.
An excellent blend of fantasy/ YA survival genres with a dash of mythology, I'd definitely recommend.

Kamichama Karin.......2007-05-02
I really love Kamichama Karin. I've collected the whole set. I kind of recommend older mature kids to read it, like from 12+. Let's just say that volumes 3 and 6 are kind of, ahem, ODD. I shall not tell you what oddness it is, as I do not want to be a spoiler. But overall, Kamichama Karin is a super funny story!!
I LUV KAMICHAMI KARIN!.......2007-02-18
this is a great kids book! very romantic and alot of koge donbo cuteness! I luv it! although, isnt it weird how karin doesnt realize kirika is evil? maybe she doesnt realize because shes failing school!
still the cutest manga ever!
A bit bland, but cute.......2006-09-23
As far as the plot goes, Kamichama Karin is a rather generic 'magical girl' story- an ordinary girl suddenly gains magic powers (wowie zowie!) and is forced to fight evil. Sound familiar?
All the characters seem, at first glance at least, to be nothing more than flat archetypes. There's the kind, sweet, motherly girl; the mean, rude, expert fighter guy; the nauseatingly 'normal' girl (the main character, of course); the dashing, polite, gorgeous male love interest; the wisecracking cute mascot. Yes, they're all here.
Not helping matters is the incredibly poor dialogue. For some reason, the translators felt obliged to pump it full of incredibly irritating slang at bizarre moments. This is especially strange-sounding when you realise that half the cast consists of wealthy kids who probably would have been brought up to be extremely polite.
However, even with all of its faults, Kamichama Karin is quite entertaining. It is genuinely funny at times (although the later volumes seem to be less so), and there really are some really heartwarming bits. And it's cute. Good grief, is it cute. I practically had a heart attack while reading the extra chapter in volume 3. Kamichama Karin was drawn by cuteness expert Koge-Donbo (of Di Gi Charat fame), and it shows.
In short, the plot is only okay, while there is some humour and general 'warm fuzzy feeling'-ness. And it's very, very, very cute.
Kazune and Karin!!.......2006-07-24
OK, I love this series! Spoilers ahead! This book introduces the weirdest character in any manga I've EVER read: Micchi hate 'im. He introduces him self to the class, and on the way to his seat, hears Karin's name, gives her a kiss on the cheek. He's apparently heard of her before. Then, he hears Kazune's name and gives him a kiss on the lips (a random girl: must..e-mail..everyone!). He then starts flirting with Karin relentlessly, despite the fact that she hates it. Once, he grabs her, despite her protests, and gives Kazune a mysterious look, along the lines of "hey, look, I can hug her. Ha,ha." Could Kazune like Karin? The book ends with him pinning down Kazune, saying that he owes him a favor. Hmm... I love the romantic tension and fights!! ;P
