Great Mystery.......2007-05-22
This book was one of my sons favorites. It had a surprise ending.
A Book Review by Jenny C. .......2006-11-02
I read a book called The Bald Bandit by Ron Roy. It's about a bandit who robs the Green Lawn Savings Bank. The three detectives (Dink, Josh, Ruth Rose) solved the mystery. When a private detective named Reddy came to look for the videotape the three detectives decided to help him. Reddy said if they found the videotape they would earn a hundred bucks.
My favorite part of the book was when Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose got the videotape and they watched the tape and they noticed it was Reddy who robbed the bank. When Reddy was at Dink's house ready to get the video, Dink hid it and gave him a tape of soccer. Ruth Rose sneaks into her house and calls the police. I think the thief was pretty smart.
I think the book was a perfect fit for me because I love reading mystery books. When I read this book at home I can't stop reading it until I finish.
The Bald Bandit.......2006-04-19
This is one of the best books in the series. I think this is the best book. I liked this book because I like mysteries. I like the whole series but this one was the best so far.
If you like mysteries you should read the series.

THE BALD BANDIT.......2005-11-17
I THINK THAT THIS BOOK IS AWSOME! WHEN I FINISHED THIS BOOK I WAS SO SAD THAT THE BOOK HAD ENDED. I LOVE THESE KIND OF BOOKS. MYSTERYS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN MY FAVORITE KIND OF BOOKS. AND THE THING THAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS BOOK IS THAT ALL THE CLUES COME TOGETHER!
good mystery!.......2005-05-11
The book takes about 45 minutes for an adult to read.
It has a surprise ending.
Sheri Myers' 6-year-old must be smarter than I am.

Customer Reviews:
A wonderful resource!.......2006-10-27
This book is invaluable for helping children take in everything related to a loved one's cancer. It helps kids understand that their fears are normal and understandable, and that cancer is something that we can fight. They also learn that the fight is hard and that they are part of the fight when they support their loved one.
It was enormously helpful to my daughter in understanding my father's cancer last year. My daughter was just five at that time. I read it aloud to her, and she listened so intently that she repeated parts of it verbatim six months later!
I gave our (first) copy to a friend when she was diagnosed with breast cancer for her daughter to read. She describes it as "a godsend."
A most helpful book.......2005-10-17
This book was given as a gift to my ten year old niece while her mom was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. I asked her about how she liked the book and she told me that is has really helped her understand what her mom is going through and helped her understand what she (my niece) was feeling. Great choice!!
A mother's cancer in a cycle of seasons.......2005-01-25
In this story, a young girl, Claire, tells the story of her mother's breast cancer in a monthly scrapbook. It starts in June, when her mother's cancer is first diagnosed. In the ensuing months, her mother experiences surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. In the final month, May, her mother is feeling better and appears to be on the road to a good recovery.
Each month includes Claire's experiences, hopes and fears. She discusses her daily routine and how it has to change when her mother is too ill to pack her lunch or drive her to school. Eventually, Claire learns to manage some chores, such as laundry, on her own. She feels that she is contributing and that she has learned some new skills. Each monthly chapter also includes scientific information explaining facts that a child might want to know. These topics include surgery, surgical drains, chemotherapy, and hair loss. the illustrations include drawings and photographs. They look like the marginal drawings that a girl like Claire might actually do. they help illustrate her reactions.
I liked the way that the book is organized around a specific time frame. A child experiences time differently from an adult. Although cancer treatment often extends longer than a year, the concrete depiction of time passage allows the child or young adolescent to see that there is a progression.
The author and illustrator have both had personal experience with cancer in themselves or in their family. They make it clear that different people experience cancer in their own ways, and that different emotional reactions are all right.
A heart-warming book about a child dealing with mom's cancer.......2003-12-12
First off, let me say that I would be a lot happier if nobody ready this book. I certainly hope that my kids never have to read this book and that I will never ever have to recommend it to anybody that I know.
"The Year My Mother Was Bald" is written for children ages 8-13 who find themselves in the position of dealing with a parent dealing with cancer. Ann Speltz based this book on the experiences of her own family during the year that she was treated for cancer. What she and her daughter, Amelia, went through is turned into this heart-warming volume from Magination Press, with illustrations by Kate Sternberg, who also endured a year when her mother was bald. Here the story is told by Clare, who keeps a journal about the year her mother undergoes treatment for cancer.
"The Year My Mother Was Bald" is divided into twelve chapters, one for each month, beginning in June (which means the cycle ends in the spring). Clare is looking forward to summer, making a list of her favorite summer things to do, when her mother comes back from her annual physical with the news that she might have a tumor in her breast. In addition to Clare's journal entries, there are articles that have been clipped from other sources explaining things like what happens "When Cells Go Wild" and "Radiation." Accompanying Clare's thoughts and this information are drawings, photographs, and resources that will help youngesters understand what is happening, the same way they helped Claire.
Not only does "The Year My Mother Was Bald" offer answers to the obvious questions that will occupy the minds of kids in this situation ("Will my mom be all right?" "Who will take care of me if she doesn't get better?") but also gives kids some pro-active things they can do to not only help them deal with their concerns and fears, but also to help with the recovery process for their mother. However, the primary focus is on helping kids deal with all aspects of this process, which is why perhaps the most poignant moment in the book is when Claire decides what to do with the box underneath her bed that has the hair that her mother has lost.
The back of this book provides resources that kids will find useful for finding additional information about dealing with cancer in free booklets, organizations and online sites, and other books. More importantly, Speltz reassures kids that there are no right or wrong feelings and their feelings are not only important, but also helpful. She also reminds her readers that scientists keep making new discoveries about cancer and coming up with new methods of fighting cancer all the time.
The only concern anyone could have about the helpfulness of this book would be the gender differences between Clare and her mother and the reader and their parent. "The Year My Mother Was Bald" speaks more to a situation where the mother has been diagnosed (fathers can always claim they are trying to look like Michael Jordan or Yul Brynner), but even young boys should be able to relate to Clare's situation and take comfort from this excellent book as well.
From a kid's perspective...............2003-09-10
This very well written, easy to read book is writen from the perspective of a preteen girl whose mother is undergoing testing and treatment for breast cancer. As both a practicing oncologist and a mother of two children (12 and 8 yrs old), I highly recommend this book. The explanations of procedures and treatments were simple, straightforward and easy to understand (my 12 year old agrees). Clare is able to describe feelings and thoughts common to many people in this situation - adults and kids alike - and will let young readers know that they are not alone. This book can also be used as a starting point for further family discussions. The references in the back of the book are quite helpful. The pictures and illustrations are wonderful and make this book unique.
Book Description
Inspired by Robinson Crusoe and Jack London, Michael Modzelewski, jettisoned all baggage accompanying life in the comfortable middle class and set out to find raw, unharnessed wilderness. He found it on Blackfish Sound ("Blackfish" is the Kwakiutl Indian word for the killer whale) in the Inside Passage, the rugged coastline between Seattle and Alaska.
Leaving his home in Aspen, which had become a false Shangri-La for him, Modzelewski settled on a desolate island in the Inside Passage, a place which "after seducing you with beauty would shake you with fear. An unpredictable place that kept you always prepared, honed to the keen edge of life." Here he lived alone for months on end.
Inside Passage describes his experiences in this unspoiled setting, where the sky is his ceiling, mountains are his walls, and physical challenges test him down to the marrow. He also forms unusual friendships with passing yachters, salmon fishermen, Kwakiutl Indians, loners, and the owner of the house he is staying at, Will Malloff, a man of oversized personality -- a healer, builder, woodsman, and thinker. Modzelewski writes with a love for nature and gentle humor about his interactions with the native animals (eagles, whales, wolves), local animals (cats, dogs, "tame" wild boars), and other settlers.
Inside Passage is the powerful story of one man learning the ways of self-reliance in a soul-filled search through the northern wilderness.
Customer Reviews:
Real Deal.......2006-04-25
I live in Alaska and a friend recommended Mr. Modzelewski's book. And now I recommend it to the world. Sure, there's the usual descriptions of animals, ocean, weather and solitude but what makes this book special is the author goes so much deeper into the Spirit behind things. Haven't stopped thinking about his experiences and it's been a month now since I finished the book.
PURE DRAMA.......2005-06-19
I'm an actress and read scripts, rarely books -- but after a producer friend recommended Inside Passage to me, I couldn't put it down! In fact, I read it three times. It was like watching a movie -- that's how vividly Michael Modzelewski writes. Alaska is a far different world than Los Angeles and I escaped completely to a pure and inspiring reality. Thank you, Michael! You are gifted and blessed. And who knows? Maybe we can turn this captivating story into a film, with the author and animals the main characters and could there be a more beautiful setting than the Inside Passage to Alaska -- as evoked so wonderfully in this poetic prose.
Interesting but too idealistic.......2005-04-01
Quick read. Definitely worth it if you have been or are going to be in the region. Some of his scientific stuff is a little off but it's not the right book if you are looking for exacting detail on these subjects. Modzelewski's perspectives were very idealistic and I found it a little difficult to believe that the experiences he relates were quite a spiritual or mind altering as he sometimes makes them seem. The author does pull series of stories or facts together well. The chapters addressed themes - like the tribes, animals, the island's owner, etc. Modzelewski doesn't try to tell you everything there is to know about any of these subjects but selects what he thinks is interesting and relates it briefly. Often the points he makes or the stories he chooses to tell are not ones that you might have expected.
Inside Passage -- Captivating!!!!!.......2004-09-08
A wonderful voyage in mother nature's womb, evoking feelings of awe, and revere at the colossal universe, inhaling the powerful imagery of wilderness through Michael.
Beyond Human.......2004-08-11
Michael Modzelewski writes like a wild animal. If the beasts could speak it wouldn't come out much different than how Michael describes them. The author knows no limits -- extending into and giving shape to all animate matter in super insightful poetic prose.

Dark Shadows .......2007-04-04
This book is top notch. I had a hard time putting it down. It was nice to be able to re-visit Collinwood and get into a new story line. If you are a fan of Dark Shadows, I would recommend this book, especially on a dark, stormy night with the waves crashing below Widow's Hill!
Could've been a lot better..........2005-02-24
The comic strip itself is well-written, and the artwork is wonderful - what you can see of it. Unfortunately, the daily strips are reproduced SIX to a page. Whatever fine line work the artist put into the panels is lost in the tiny size. The daily strips are almost too small to read without getting a eye-strain headache. The book's dimensions should have been much larger. Hopefully a better presentation will come out one day...I give it two stars for the art and one star for the story.
At some variance with the show, but wonderful nonetheless!.......2003-04-29
March 14, 1971, a new comic strip appeared from the Newspaper Enterprise Association, a comic strip entitled, Dark Shadows. Patterned on the successful (though doomed) American television show of the same name, the comics featured the vampire Barnabas Collins returning to his ancestral home in Maine and protecting his last living relatives, Elizabeth Collins Stoddard and her daughter Carolyn. Expertly illustrated by Kenneth Bruce Bald, the black-and-white drawings wonderfully compliment the Gothic setting of the story, and illustrator did an excellent job of capturing Jonathan Frid's likeness.
The comic only ran for 52 week before it too was cancelled, and all of the comics are reproduced in this book. The comics cover six storylines: 1) Barnabas faces an ancient warlock who cannot die until he has killed the last of the Collins; 2) the goddess Isis has found all that she needs to restore her husband Osiris to life, except for his soul which is in the body of a certain vampire; 3) when a werewolf begins stalking the town of Collinsport, Barnabas acts; 4) the master of darkness, Mr. Sinestra, is angered that he never gained control of Barnabas Collins, and he sets out correct that; 5) when the daughter of an old college rival of Elizabeth arrives at Collinwood, people begin to die, and Barnabas needs to stop it; and 6) Barnabas sets out to change history and right a two hundred year wrong. Along the way, Barnabas uses his vampiric powers, but defeats his enemies with his wits and (more often) with his heart.
First of all, it must be said that these comics were written independently of the television show, and does *not* maintain continuity with it. That said, though, the stories are wonderful, the illustrations are excellent, and the book makes a wonderful purchase for anyone who fondly remembers the show. I loved this book, and highly recommend it!

Book Description
A majestic bird swoops down, snatches its prey, then soars into the clouds. It is a bald eagle, one of North America's largest hunting birds.
For centuries the bald eagle has been a symbol of majesty, strength, and freedom. In 1782 it became the official emblem of the United States. Yet now this fierce hunter is in danger of extinction.
Gail Gibbons's thoroughly researched text and dramatic illustrations present the bald eagle in all its grandeur- hunting, courting, nesting, and hatching- with fascinating facts and statistics about this remarkable winged predator and the efforts to save it.

Great Teaching Tool with Gorgeous Illustations.......1999-07-30
I used this book as the basis for a program on eagles prepared for children ages 5-9. The book provides lots of accurate facts about the eagle, its habitat requirements and how we can insure its viability. The illustrations are wonderful and enhance the technical story of the eagle being told by Gail Gibbons. I will use this book again for my own children and for programs focusing on eagles for the early elementary school age kids to learn about our eagle population on the James River.

The Bald Eagle's View of American History.......2006-08-26
This book will bring information on several levels. Not only do you learn facts about the American bald eagle, but important times of U.S. history plus pictures of actual American postal stamps that tie in with the story. A great book for 3-5th grades.
Really fun and good.......2006-08-15
I acculy know Mr. Colman, he came to my school to talk about his book before it was published. This is a really great book and fun to read because it's not just. In 1942, the bla bla bla of bla bla bla blaed throught the bla bla. The people were bla bla and bla bla. Bla bla was a professinal bla bla and bla....... It is better than that. It is great! and It's his first book.
A great read.......2006-06-25
In Colman's debut children's book, he takes the reader on a tour through American history with the flair of a great storyteller. The progress of the building of America is beautifully contrasted with the plight of the bald eagle. This book is one that adults will enjoy reading and discussing with children, as its many layers provide a variety of subjects, including history, eagles, stamp collecting and environmental responsibility, to talk about. The illustrations are truly lovely and fit the tone the writer set forth. There is also a section of notes in the back that flesh out the topics and provide reference materials, a great treat. All in all, highly recommended.

A list of books banned over the years.......2006-05-27
In "120 Banned Books" the authors pull together a collection of books that have been banned at some point in history for Political, Religious, Sexual, and/or Social grounds.
I found this book very interesting in two ways. First, it offers a nice synopsis of 120 books, a few of which are somewhat obscure. And as it is unlikely that many have read all of these, this book provides enough information, along with Amazon reviews, of course ;), about the subject books for the reader to make the decision about investing the time to read it.
Following each book synopsis is a short history of when, where, why, etc that book was banned. I will admit that, after a few dozen times, I got tired of which local school board voted to remove a book from a reading list or library shelf. The local school board bannings are generally motivated by someone in the community finding a book offensive or insulting or age-inappropriate. And with the political correctness/hypersensitivity of today, I am only suprised that we do not see a vastly increasing number of complaints for various left- and right- of center reasons.
But I DID find the discussions of book bans at the national level quite interesting. The read can see how some governments through history have attempted control the thoughts of the citizens by controlling the printed material (and other media as well, of course) available. This book includes examples from all over the world and is very interesting.
This is a good book to add to your library.

very information.......2002-06-07
My son picked this book our at the library today. We read it together. Lots of great info along with a story of how baby eagles grow! Fun book!
Beautifully rendered illustrations with insightful narration.......1999-10-06
I absolutely love this book--visually stunning with accurate, sometimes to the point of scientific, drawings of the growth cycle of the bald eagle. The narration is very informative while at the same time engaging for younger readers as well. I learned more in this book about eagles than in any field guide. When's the next one coming out?
This book is very appealing for both parent and child........1999-09-02
The illustrations and the story are both immediately appealing. The information is fascinating and what is especially useful is that there are two levels of information available on each page. That is, the story for children about how a baby eagle joins the world and then additional information for the older child and the parent. Its so engaging and beautiful!
