Book Description

In this companion volume to their successful Managing With Carrots, Adrian Gostick and Chester Elton present a remarkable story of how a great leader can unleash human potential--creating success in even the worst economy. Providing strategies and solutions for the managers of today, this book offers answers for improving employee commitment and profitability by strategically acknowledging employee effort. How is it done? The deceptively simply answer: with carrots. Plentiful examples show how to choose the right reward for each employee, how to time the giving of a reward to motivate performance, how to effectively present rewards, when to give praise in private and when to make it a public celebration, and how to motivate employees to work harder and work smarter with the company's goals in mind.

5 out of 5 stars The Value of Recognition.......2007-05-15

A valuable resource in any organization looking to improve employee morale and output
It highlighted issues we have faced in our current recognition program and provided
a long list of practical applications behind the philosophy.

Well worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars Highest ROI Book Ever?.......2006-11-17

After I sink my scarce time into reading a book I always do a rough ROI analysis by comparing how much will it will help me build my business with how rough a slog it was to get through. This might me the highest ROI book ever ... it will have a profound impact on my business and it was a blast of fresh air to read!

2 out of 5 stars Execution is the key.......2006-09-12

The idea that Gostick and Elton proposed is not new. In fact, it has been proposed in 1940s by Abraham Maslow in his hierarchy of needs. Maslow's argued that human behaviors are motivated by a series of needs, and are hierarchical in nature. If I understand correctly what Maslow had proposed and applied the same theory to this book, in fact what we are seeing is the execution of satisfying the needs on love/belonging and esteem. This is why an employee will prefer public recognition anytime compare to bonuses, since money, to a large degree, is use to satify the human needs for food and shelter only, which is at the lowest hierarchy of all human needs. The book carries no new theory of human behavior, but a new way in reminding managers that employees are human, and do satisfy human needs in the hierarchical form.

5 out of 5 stars Simple Ways to Energize Your Employees.......2005-07-14

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Gostick and hearing him speak at the annual International Association of Business Communicators conference in June in Washington, D.C.

The value of this quick, easy-to-read book is remarkable. By learning how to do simple things to recognize and reward employees you will find excellent ways to engage your workforce, keep them loyal, focused and energized and have them reach their highest potential.

It is a great tool for all managers of any organization - big or small - or any industry.

4 out of 5 stars A recipe book for providing recognition.......2003-04-12

This is an easy-to-read book providing useful tips on how to develop and implement a recognition reward program in your organization.

It offers suggestions at a macro and micro levels. Therefore, you can benefit from it no matter what type of managers you are. There are numerous best practices shared from a wide range of private companies.

In my opinion, the authors spend too much time demonstrating the importance and the benefits of recognizing employees' contribution. If you read the book, it is because you are already converted, isn't it?

These are the ways the world ends.
Thirty-four new and selected Doomsday scenarios: an enthralling collection of work by canonical literary figures, contemporary masters, and a few rising stars, all of whom have looked into the future and found it missing. Obliteration has never hurt so good.

4 out of 5 stars A gorgeous book, from presentation to content........2007-09-19

"THESE ARE THE WAYS THE WORLD ENDS--THIRTY-FOUR NEW AND SELECTED DOOMSDAY SCENARIOS"

This is a gorgeous book, from presentation to content. The selections are humorous, serious, simple, complex, and much more--thirty-four stories, some short, some long, make for a wide spectrum of apocalypses. Taylor, in the foreword, expounds on his conception of an apocalypse:

"It's worth pointing out that the word Apocalypse comes from the Greek, and literally means "a revelation" or "an unveiling." It can be used to describe cataclysmic changes of any sort. Revolution, for example, or social upheaval. [...] There are micro-Apocalypses that mark moments in our lives: childhood's end, a relationship's sudden implosion, Death."

The selections do span the gamut--some were written so long ago as to be in the public domain, and some were freshly minted in the late 2000's; some focus on religious upheavals, some macro, some micro; there are personal upheavals, student rantings, surreal recountings of madmen; and of course many take the reader through more conventional "end of the world" scenarios. And even with all that diversity, perhaps guided by the introduction, the theme of the anthology runs strong.

If there were a criticism I could make of this volume, that, ironically, would be it. I consider myself a bit of an Apocalypse afficionado--I particularly enjoy reading such stories, along with dystopias--and I would have thought that I could never grow tired of reading well-wrought incarnations of such--and these stories were all well-wrought and well-edited, there is no doubt about that--but this volume overwhelmed me. I was tired, even weary, by the time I had wended my way through the collection (and that in the course of several "sittings")..

The lead story, a piece of flash fiction by H. P. Lovecraft, starts the anthology out elegantly, and slowly. It warns you, implicitly, that you're in for some heavy reading, even if you're a fan of Mr. Lovecraft's writing (and not just his mythos, which more people are familiar with, and is much easier to get into third hand). On that end of the scale, there's also a piece from Edgar Allan Poe that is ponderous but worth an examination, entitled "The Conversation of Eiros and Charmion".

Some of my favorites included:

"The Apocalypse Commentery of Bob Paisner" by Rick Moody -- This is an essay detailing the allegorical depths of the Book of Revelation with regard to Bob Paisner's life. The tone is both erudite and a bit delirious, and the piece as a whole is both informative and immersive--I found myself eagerly wondering where Moody was going to take us next, what dark or clinical humor would next be presented.

"Fraise, Menthe, et Poivre 1978" by Jared Hohl -- Another piece of meta-fiction, this follows a group of people through the more traditional trope of being the last survivors in a ruined post-apocalyptic city. What makes this piece stand out is the manic bent of the narrator and the push for the show to go on--the story weaves the primary narrative with a small handful of abbreviated stageplays that emphasize much about human nature, hope, and despair, while retaining a very human humor.

"An Accounting" by Brian Evenson -- An "honest" accounting of how one explorer fell into becoming a reborn Jesus and how he helps his flock survive. I don't want to say too much about this, but the voice is clear, the narrative is well woven and unrolls at a compelling pace, and other than, perhaps, the initial fanaticism he encounters, it is all quite believable.

"Some Approaches to the Problem of the Shortage of Time" by Ursula K. Le Guin -- This is a clever set of abstracts that are ever timely and consider a novel scenario for the end of the modern-day universe. The shortage of time is pervasive, and this story is brief to give you a maximum pleasure for what it takes.

"Think Warm Thoughts" by Allison Whittenberg -- A bite-sized slice of apocalypse that is poetically poignant; every word counts.

"When We Went to See the End of the World by Dawnie Morningside, age 11 1/4" by Neil Gaiman -- This is the end of the world, everyone and everything together, through the playful, somewhat naiive eyes of an eleven year old. It's told in the vein of "What I did over Summer vacation", and is very evocative, sweet, and strange.

"The Escape--a Tale of 1755" by Grace Aguilar -- This is an elegant tale of a woman's love for her husband, religious persecution, and a prison escape. It is written with a very modern feel despite its age (originally published in 1844).

That's not to say I disliked the other stories; and on another day I would have different favorites, though there were some pieces that didn't work for me. But I hope this selection will help give you a feel for the collection as a whole, beyond my simple regard for it. In all, it's a beautiful collection, and I recommend it strongly, with the caveat that you may want to take it in small doses.

2 out of 5 stars too esoteric to feed my apocalypse-hungry soul.......2007-09-12

I was initially excited to discover the collection and didn't see how such a broad-based compilation could go wrong. I'm an avid reader of post-apocalyptic fiction, science fiction and futurism, so I'm no slouch, but this turned out to be quite different from what I was hoping for.

While a few of the pieces are good reads, so many of them are abstract, esoteric, or even reminiscent of the scribblings from slightly disturbed angst-ridden teenage diaries. There's no good "meat" here, no concrete scenarios, suspense or drama to drive fear into your heart and make your mind race. The circumstances under which "apocalypse" occurs are rarely even revealed. Even the subject matter is open to interpretation - "apocalypse" is made to mean many things, not simply the end of the world. Which it does, of course, but that's not what I was hungry for when I picked up this book. The book description should have done a better job of managing those expectations.

Perhaps if you are looking for a broad literary "treatment" of the subject, that kind of interpretation will appeal to you (or if you enjoy the just plain bizarre) then this collection is for you. It was not for me.

5 out of 5 stars These Zombies Are Not A Metaphor.......2007-05-16

This is a fun collection of stories from some well known and serious talent (Gaiman, Lovecraft, Poe) and some newly minted authors. I found myself particularly amused by "These Zombies Are Not A Metaphor," the work of one of the new authors named Jeff Goldberg. I'll be keeping an eye peeled for future work from him.

The book is suprisingly realistic, also. I think it deserves a read. I'm sure anyone from ages 7-13 would like this.

If these are the top short story authors in the United States and Canada, we are in bad shape. Most of these stories simply aren't very interesting--I found the characters to be generally unsympathetic losers, and very little actually happens in most of the stories.

One story, by Margaret Atwood, has some punch. Why don't you just lean against the shelf in the bookstore and read that one, then put the book back? You'll save some money that way, and you won't miss a thing.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on a touchy subject. It's a must read........1998-08-13

McNally has compiled a wide array of stories that tackles a difficult subject matter. To be human means that you have committed, been the victim of, or, at the very least, considered adultery. It is nice to read what some great authors have to say on the subject. I could not recommend this book more highly. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars The Horse of Her Dreams.......2006-11-03

I loved this book! It was not as good as the last few through. I thought that Chistina was caring to stand up for the horse she loved, and how she gave away Wonder's Legacy. It was amazing, I never saw it coming! This is a book you have to read. Can't wait to read all about Melanie!

3 out of 5 stars The Horse Of Her Dreams.......2005-07-19

In the book The Horse Of Her Dreams, years has passed fast. The 3year old Christina Reese is now 12. Christinas parents Ashleigh Griffen was a famous jockey who raced in the Tripple Crown a couple times and the first female to win the Tripple Crown on Wonders Champion, the colt from the famous Ashleighs Wonder. Ashleigh Griffen also has helped train hundreds of promsing and champion thoroughbreds. Mike Reese Christinas father co ownes Whitebrook with Ashleigh. Mike has helped train hundreds of champions also. Mikes very first champion thoroughbred he trained was Jazzman and Ingigo. Both great racehorses and now excellent stallions. Christina is the luckiest girl ever. Christina has taken to 3 day eventing other than racing and wants a new event horse. Her old pony Tribulation is to small for Christina and Christina askes her parents for a new horse. On Christinas, Ashleigh and Mike lead Christina to the horses in training barn and there finds her new horse, Wonders Legacy. The chestnt colt was Ashleighs Wonder last foal and now he belonged to Christina Reese. Christina is upset but doesnt want her parents knowing. Legacy was a racehorse and not an event horse. On Legays first race, he comes in 4th and makes a bit of disapointment. But at the racetrack, Christina sees a grey mare being abused. When Chris sees how poorly the mare races, she finds out the mare can jump. Christina says that is the grey horse of her dreams. The mare jumped beautifully and Christina knew the mare would make a great event horse. Christina finds out the mares next race was a clamings race. Christina a Mike put up for the mare named Sterling Dream. After the race, Christina shows the groom did abuse Sterling and was fired and Christina now had the mare. Then a lady comes by and says she also put up for the mare. The track stewards decide to give Sterling to the lady. Mike offers good money but the lady still wants Sterling. Christina decides to trade her horse Wonders Legacy for Sterling Dream. Finaly Cristina and her parents are back at Whitebrook farm and without Legacy but with Sterling. 5 out of 5 stars The horse of her dreams.......2005-06-04

About the book: Christina Reese is a 12 year old girl who lives on Whitebrook farm. Her parents are the famous Ashleigh Griffen and Mike Reese. However, Chris doesnt like racing like her parents do. She would rather jump. She begs her parents for a horse, since she is outgrowing her pony. Well she gets a horse, but not just any horse; she gets Wonder's last foal (Wonder's Legacy). Chris is devastated; she wont even be able to ride Legacy. When the family goes to Belmont to watch a race, she sees the horse of her dreams. Sterling is a dappeled gray mare who is being abused by her groom. Chris would do anything to have her, even give up Wonder's Legacy. She traded Legacy for Sterling. Although life ends well for Sterling, Legacy (as we later find out) never even got the chance to race because his new owner and Brad Townsend didnt agree on ANYTHING.

My Opinion: Awesome book! There is only one problem I had with it and that was the major time jump. I think it jumped ahead by almost 10 years! And for everyone saying the series is supposed to be about racing: If you think about it, Christina feels like racing is more important to her parents than she is. On top of that they keep pushing her to like racing! Of course she will rebel against it. Remeber that old saying "you can lead a horse to water, but you cant make him drink". She already has the oppertunity to enjoy racing (she lives on a racing farm) but no one can make her like it. I wouldnt like it either if it was forced upon me. That would be like your parents trying to force you to marry someone you dont like. BLEH! So anyway what im trying to say is yes the previous books focused on racing, but HELLO we do have a new character and she doesnt like racing. Get over it!

2 out of 5 stars WHAT HAPPEND TO RACING.......2005-05-21

I couldnt wit till Wonder's Legacy waz born and racing. I just started reading this book and found out that Christina trades Legacy for Sterling. Once I heard about Legacy in the begning, I knew he would be a champion like his brothers and sisters, mabe even better and Ashleigh and Mike give him to Christina and she doesnt even like him. All I hear from Christina is jumping, dressage and eventing and this is suposed to be a racing series. And wat happened to the past 9 years and I dont think Wonder had that long of a break. She could have had at least 3 foals in that time. I hated Cindy and in the first few chapters, I waz kinda glad that I never heard her name but now she is kinda better than Chris cauz she loves the horses and racing. Christina was suposed to be a racer through her life but she almost hates it. And in book 23, Ashleigh was pregient again and says nothing now. Its like they wanted her not to ride Honor and now she is a brood mare too. Along with Fleet Street, and Lucky Chance and all of teh horses that were 3 and now 10 or 11. Whatz going on?
