Dull, Derivative, Didactic.......2007-09-27
In Eldest, Paolini carries over all his mistakes with Eragon. The stealing from LOTR and Star Wars is more blatant than before. The needless details and purple prose are still there. The dialogue and characters are dryer than ever.
In addition to these flaws, Paolini has added in another literary no-no. Preachiness. Though we saw hints of his amateur philosophy in Eragon, it's ten times worse in Eldest. He uses Oromis as a soapbox to inject random sermons on atheism and vegetarianism into his story. I have no problem with sermons in fiction if they are relevant to themes well-woven into the plot. Yet atheism, religion, and vegetarianism seem irrelevant to Eragon's fight with Galbatorix. So why are they there?
The worst part is that Eldest's religious debates are frightfully immature. Neither side is well articulated. Oromis is a superficial question-dodger (which embarrasses me as an atheist). The religious characters are stereotypical screaming, spitting, straw men (that last alliterative bit surpasses all Paolini's poetic ability by the way). I can only pray (pun intended) that Paolini will give up this sad adolescent attempt at depth.
Awesome Continuation of an Incredible Book.......2007-09-17
I had been waiting for years when this came out. After reading Eragon, the first of the Inheritance Trilogy, I was just left hanging with the abrupt ending. Well this one picks up just about as abruptly, and doesn't really let go or calm down throughout.
I had read some reviews which complained about the training which Eragon and Saphira go through - how it takes up so much time and how its so boring and all that. I'll admit I'm a bit of a nerd, but I thought Paolini did an excellent job keeping things moving through the training phase. He actually left me wanting more. He also utilizes that period in the book to explore a little more the history of the world he's created. You can see a very strong Tolkien emphasis there (not to mention with many of the names he's chosen for characters and places!).
And I think this book turns the tale more into a multi-character tale, with the return of Roran and the adventure he undertakes which eventually links him back to Eragon.
Overall, very well done. I pretty much inhaled the book - it definitely moved and kept the story rolling on. I had a really hard time putting it down every night. It's also neat to see Paolini's maturation as an author. And I just can't wait for the third book!
Amazing book!!!!.......2007-09-10
I was bored one day at my libary and so i picked Eragon, that was most likly one of the best desisions of my life. It started my on this world of adventure Eldest, the sequel takes off right where Eragon left off and while being much thicker in length is also much better in story and plot. The Author does a great job in creating a world that just bursts in creativity, while also involving some of the clasic elements of surprise, suspence, romance, and the thrill before a battle. Eldest also brings you deep into the culture of Alligasia, I personaly did an all nighter while reading this book, i just could not put it down. My only disappointnent was that it had such a cliff hanger at the end!!! You should not read this book before reading Eragon, but please do read this eventually because this is currently the best book ever written!
A Derivitave Cluster (Insert Expletive).......2007-09-05
Although some have commented on this previously I will try and put my own spin on this...(warning plot spoilers, what little plot there was are below)
1. Because Obi-Wan Kenobi/Brom's died before completing Luke/Eragon's training, he travels to Dagobah/Elven Lands, to complete his training with Master Yoda/Deebag Lord of Elves.
2. Hero trains for awhile in secluded location by last jedi master/dragonrider left.
3. Luke/Eragon gets a vison of his friends in trouble and travels to Cloud City/Battlefield where he meets a dark figure who he battles and loses his lightsabre/dragonsword in the process. The critical all shocking moment is when Darth Vader/Red Dragon Knight reveals that Luke/Eragon I am your father/brother. Of course if you could be blind as a bat reading the book in braile and seen that Murtag was the red dragon rider about a million miles away...so it wasn't much of a revelation.
4. This book is bad, not in the mildly gosh that's several hours of my life I'll never get back but in a jaw dropping, utterly shocked, the world is now dumber for having read this book way. I read a review that mentioned that the editor of this book did a dismal job. He was certainly accurate in that assessment. Abysmally written, unoriginal to a point of plot plagarism, and editing to shock the conscience.
5. I know that Amazon requires you be over the age of 13 to post a review but I have to sincerely believe that no one over the age of 12 could honestly get mild entertainment out of such a sloppy mess as Eldest. It makes me worry to see so many positive reviews of such utter tripe.
6. I have a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature which I earned departmental Honor's in as well as Juris Doctor degree. Not that it makes my point anymore valid or the book any worse. But I would recommend avoiding this book like a leper with a bad case of herpes.
Nice derivation for uses of magic and when it comes from.......2007-08-29
Very good effort, and with a few parts that I found myself reading 5 or six times at different dates. If your have read it or happen to be Christopher Paolini, all I have to say is "Good Lord" middle section "Eldest", that section was my favorite. I also noticed the werecat clue you dropped in Eragon which as not reared it's head as of 2 books. A very good read, even if you are tired of old style fantasy books. The charactors make all the diffence.
Looking forward to Book 3.

This book totally tugs on the romantic reader's heartstrings. The characters are so well developed in this book 2, that it becomes easier to identify with them and love them each. It is a great plot thickener.

Have you read the first of this series... "TWILIGHT"? If you did, you probably did what I did... ran out and purchased "NEW MOON". I just received it and delved into it as soon as I opened the package. It's a wonderful continuation of "TWILIGHT". I'm not through yet, but I know at the end, I'll be just as anxious to get started on "ECLIPSE". NOTE: I started "TWILIGHT" because I was curious about what my niece was reading. (I always get the audio version because I do a lot of driving.)

In the begining of the book everything seemed alright until Edward started acting strange.Bella knew something was wrong.Edward took her into the woods and told her he didn't love her anymore.Bella just sat in the rain for hours until the search party, that Charlie sent out, had found her. She was depressed for many months.Eventualy she startedto hang out with Jacob Black aka the werewolf.When Bella did something reckless her concious sounded like Edward, so she started doing more reckless stuff just to hear his voice.Alice had a vision of her jumping off a cliff and went to find Bella. Rosalie told Edward that Bella had killed herself and he went to Italy to find the Volturi.Edward wanted the Volturi to kill him.He planed ot walk into the most crowed place at noon. Alice and Bella hopped the first plane they could.Bella ran to EDward and reached him right before he steped into the sun light.The Volturi wanted to speak to edward ot see if he wanted ot jion them.ALice and BElla came with him.The members of the Volturi have powers just like the Cullens. The members wanted to see if their powers would work on Bella,a nd they didn't. The only way the Volturi would let Bella leave alive was if she was to turn into a vampire. They told her she had one year to become one of them. Together Bella,Edward, and Alice went back to the states where the rest of the Cullens were there to meet them.Edward took Bella home and would not leave her side. He explained that he left to protect her but he couldn't live without her. He told her that we will and always loved her.She told him that she loved him and didn't want him to leave ever again, he promiced that he would never leave unless BELLA told him to.Bellatolkd him that would never happen.Jacob Black was very angry that Edward was returning so he thought that if he got Bella into a lot of trouble then the "blood sucker" would leave. Jacob brought Bellas' dirt bike over to her house and showed it to Charlie.Charlie was VERY ANGERY!He screamed at Bella and it was not the nicest scene in the book.I've read New Moon about 4 times in the first week that i had it. Edward is my favorite character!!!!i got this book a week after it came out and that was the best day of my life.I dont like that Edward left Bella in the woods, but if you think about it he was doing it for her protection.During the months that Bella was depresed that was the worst part of the book.When I read that part for the first time I almost throught the book at the wall.It made me cry.My favorite part was when Alice found Bella and they were going to save Edward.I've read many books in my time a lot more than others can say they read, and this was by far the best book ever!! IF YOU DON'T READ THIS BOOK THEN YOU JUST DON'T LIKE BOOKS THAT ARE INTERESTING, AND ABLE TO DEVOURE A BOOK IN ONE SITTING! SO READ IT!!!

This book is the mother of books about infectious diseases all around the world! This is an obligatory book that has to be on your library. Has excellent reviews of the majority of illnesses with great quality images. Even this version of the book includes a CD with images info to make your own presentations. Currently, I think is the best book about Infectious diseases.
Infectious Disease Bible.......2007-04-04
I am a hospital pharmacist. An infectious disease pharmacist showed me how much you could find in the previous edition of this book when I was doing a residency. Because many of the patients get admitted to the hospital due to some type of infection, this book has been invaluable in helping me understand details of any disease state. It has helped me understand antibiotic drug therapies and the reasons behind them more than any other written resource. And most importantly, it is a known and respected reference to the hospitalists that I can refer to modifying drug therapies or answering drug information questions related to infectious diseases.
It may seem expensive, but it has laid down multiple blueprints for looking at the complicated field of infectious diseases. I encourage anyone who is going into the field of pharmacy to make sure they can at least access these books.

As an infectious disease fellow, I recommend that anyone who want be an ID man should have such a book. Most infectious problems and diseases have been detailed in this book, although there are far going of emerging diseases and new antibiotics.
The only shortcomes of this book are lackiing comprehensive details and reveiw of antimicrobial therapy for some disease entities.

I've read quite a few books on Windows Forms applications which include creating custom controls. There are some that are average and there are some that are very good. Usually the average books tend to touch on the simpler aspects of windows forms and forms controls and not go into much detail, which is OK for the novice programmer dabbling in .NET for the first time. However, the more experienced programmers among us want much more. In this respect the very good books tend to be a little over the top for the average user.
This book falls somewhere in the middle for novice and experienced programmers alike, whilst still being rather good. It offers a good discussion on what makes up the underlying architecture of Windows Forms applications which many books lack. The .NET IDE attempts to hide a lot of the nuts and bolts behind the outer layers and generally you shouldn't touch what's under the covers. But occasionally you need to, especially when using visual inheritance because that's when the IDE starts the go a little haywire. By understanding a little about what's happening underneath goes a long way in helping you get out of the mess when the IDE does screw up.
The book covers most of the interesting forms controls .NET 2.0 has to offer and describes them in better detail than what can be found in the relatively useless MSDN on-line help. The code examples given are excellent, concentrating on real-world scenarios. A good portion of the book illustrates how to extend these controls further using custom controls and GDI+ owner drawing to modify the look and feel of these controls.
The book also concentrates on developing 3-tier applications isolating the presentation layer from the business logic and data layers, which is a highly recommended practice for developing scalable applications.
The book doesn't include a CD but all the code examples can be downloaded from the publisher's web site.
Overall I give it 4 out of 5.
Master of Controls.......2007-04-17
Since the moment when I took this book in my hands and was able to make practice with the examples on this book, I was able to feel recognized the simplicity in the complexity of the controls.
The examples are clear and very well done, impeccables and flawless a good thing for the newbie and the old programmer.
I am enjoying the controls that allow me to click on them and assign my own properties.
Good WinForms and Custom Controls Book.......2007-04-02
This book gives a good overview of each control, but is really centered on teaching you how to develop custom user controls and how to get them to work well with the VS 2005 IDE (Tool panel and Properties window). It also covers owner drawn controls using GDI+. The downloadable code samples demonstrate everything in the book. However, it doesn't appear that the author actually tried to compile all of them, as there are many with fixible errors (mostly project setup ones), and one, that uses an xlst file to install a SQL database that does not have the required procedures. Thankfully, the author responded to me with questions I had and sent me a new database file. One major positive is that the book is not filled with code listings. The author only shows the specific code segments that he is talking about. I learned a lot from this book. It loses a star though for the sloppy C# program examples.

These books have changed my life. Multi year chronic back pain is gone. Clair Davies summarized these medical books in very easy to understand terminology in his book "trigger point therapy workbook". Massaging the painfull trigger points has helped me so much.

I found the information quite thorough. It is written in a user-friendly way, easy to understand. I bought this book because it was listed as a reference for the chiropractic practice part 2 exam. This book helped me with the locations of the trigger points. Sometimes the chiro boards like to ask questions on trigger points. However, Leonardi's book: National Board of Chiropractic Part II Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers and National Board of Chiropractic Part III Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations are excellent for board exam preparation. These three books are needed for the part II and Part III of the boards.
The ultimate in drug-free pain relief!.......2001-01-25
As a Clinical Massage Therapist at a hospital, I use these books almost daily. In fact, I just ordered my second set. . . The first is so threadbare it's barely usable. ANYTIME I have a patient with a pain that I can't immediately identify I grab my Travell's. This set is an absolute BIBLE for anyone in the health care industry. Travell and Simons have esentially written "The Instruction Manual" for elliminating myofascial pain by going to it's source!
Janet Travell, MD and David Simons, MD were absolute pioneers when it came to myofascial pain and it's treatment. What makes these books even more amazing is that they were written a full quarter of a century before doctors even acknowledged that myofascial pain actually exsisted. . . What makes them interesting is that, in this, the most current edition, they have re-evaluated about 65% of the sites that before would only be considered for cortizone or saline injection and now recommend these areas be attended to by a Massage Therapist. They even go into strong detail as to stroke, direction and stretching. There are still plenty of sites that they recommend for injection, but only in a last resort situation.
The chapters are laid out in an incredibly easy to understand manner, though that's not even the beauty of the book's design. If you know the name of the muscle in question, you simply look inside the front cover; the muscle are all listed with their coresponding page numbers next to them. Don't know the name or not sure which muscle it is in the group? No problem. You again open the front cover and there, in 5th grade simplicity, are charts for all the areas covered in the book. Flip to the area in question and look through the diagrams. When you find (in the super well drawn diagrams) the pain you are trying to treat, you are given, not only several treatment plans, but etiology and most likely direct verve aggravation associated with the pain.
My only problem with the set is that the book are not as well bound as maybe they could be for the price. You'll notice, however, that it didn't have enough of an impact on me to give it any less that a perfect score.
I STRONGLY recommend this book for ANY health care practitioner that deals with pain control and alleviation.
A Tour de Force.......2000-11-02
Janet Travell MD and David Simons MD spent a lifetime studying the patterns and treatment of muscular and soft tissue pain in patients. It is a specialty in itself, and provides an amazingly detailed review of anatomy. These books are the bible on the subject written by the "mother" and "father" of the specialty. There will hardly be a day in the professional life of a busy primary care practitioner, rheumatologist, orthopedist, neurologist, physiatrist or physical therapist when these books will not be used. The more one knows of this field, the more revelations one gets into those difficult chronic pain patients. The etiology and muscular complexity of the huge field of "tension headache" syndromes now become clear. With these books you will have the tools to diagnose and treat effectively (usually dramatically) the entire spectrum of myofascial pain from head to toe, muscle by muscle. This is a good Feist piece of work. It does not live up the Riftwar Saga, but the Magician series was by far his finest works. However, Feist is beginning to introduce and utilize many new characters. For many this will be a welcome change. I enjoyed Feist's other series that leveraged new characters. The Tsurani series was great.
The Conclave is still at the heart of the book so those with attachment to Pug and Nakor will find them plenty to keep you interested.
All in all, I recommend this book.
Into a Dark Realm (The Darkwar Saga, Book 2).......2007-07-12
Feist did a wonderful job bringing his past and present works together in this book. I love the direction that the story line is progressing towards. He leaves you waiting with anticipation for the next book (as usual).

The Story Continues.......2007-06-26
The Magician Pug, his family and friends continue in their fight to allow both worlds to survie free and not part of the dark realm. The story is well written and continues the saga of Pug over a very long life time and his war with the dark power which is trying to subvert both worlds in which Pug has a stake. Some friends and people, of course, will no longer been seen. At least it seems so, as they are eliminated by the dark power. Its tough fighting a god like force when you are mearly mortal, or near mortal. Pug also must face the time when all his family will pass on to the wheel and leave him behind and alone. But in order to stop this force he must face that reality and move forward in his fight.

Let me start off by saying I have abeen a very big fan of Feist for many years. I must, however, say that this is probably the worst book he has written yet. Admittedly, most middle books in a series tend to leave you hanging and feeling somewhat disappointed, but this book was truly disappointing. First of all, the book tops out at 300 pages, of rather large print, making it a rather short book. The plot hardly advances at all, and much of the book is based around the 3 boys Tad, Zane, and Jommy, who do pretty much nothing productive, and aren't particularly interesting characters to start out with. Aside from a few interesting twists (and some annoying twists that make you wonder how insanely powerful and intelligent beings can be so friggin dumb), the book gives a definite sense that Feist got lazy on this one. I would suggest that people wait for the paperback to save some money, as you will probably feel cheated if you don't. Hopefully this is just a fluke, and the next installment in the series will be awesome, because otherwise Feist will have many angry fans on his hands.

I purchased this book for my Literature class. Unfortunately we did not get to read all of the works. I have fallen in love with this book and I hope to keep it for many many years. Some of the works can be boring but if you keep an open mind and concentrate on the ideas, language, and meaning you will understand even the most boring of works.

I purchased this book for a class, but was delighted to discover that I will definitely want to hang onto it afterwards. The translations chosen for the 'Ancient World' portion are, for the most part, delightfully vivid and capture the spirit of the original language. I also like the layout - the margin size is just perfect for taking notes.

This book I loved when I was reading the pages, and how it gives you a little passport in the back of the book like it was actually a real passport. The books description of the garden when they first get out of the tree house in Japan just gives me a picture of what it looks like in real life. This book had a bit of humor and that adds coolness to the book. Buy this book!!!!!!!! I'm 11.

I liked it because Jack and Annie travel to Japan which is a really cool place and I think more people should read this book. It is better than any other book because it is the newest of the series.
Dragon of the Red Dawn.......2007-05-27
This is a wonderful book for kids. I love it, so much that I bring it with me everywhere I go. I have read this, and like it. It takes place In old Japan. Jack and Annie meet a poet named Basho, and spend the day with him. I have learned about Basho in school and most of the things the book told about him I knew. I was thrilled reading about the Samuarai, and when the fire came around I was so excited I almost screamed! Dragon of the Red Dawn is a good book to read.
Hard for parents to suspend belief, but the kids loved it........2007-05-14
Another classic Magic Treehouse installment, this time in imperial Japan. The haiku and deatils of life in Edo made this book informative for the little ones (4,6) and a little more interesting for the parents reading it. The fact that it involves a dragon was a big plus for both of them. The rating is only relative to other magic treehouse books, and not to the vast choice of better children's literature out there. All that said, I am sure it would make a good read for 7-8 year olds delving into books on their own for the first time.
