The "shooting war" turned out to be the horror of combat and the wild luck of survival; how it feels to cross a field toward the enemy, waiting for fire. When he entered the service he was a boy. When he came back he was different; he was only 19, but he was a man with "soldier's heart," later known as "battle fatigue."

In 1861 Charley is fifteen years old, living on a farm in Minnesota with his mother and little brother. Everyone has heard the rumor that there is to be a war, with those in the North fighting to stop the Southern rebels from doing damage to the country. No one is quite sure if the war is really going to happen, but Charley is determined to be a part of it if it is.
He convinces his mother that he can handle himself as a soldier and tells her the eleven dollars a month he'll be paid will help her out, and she agrees to let him go. He signs up, lying about his age so they will let him into the army, and begins his training.
At first things are horribly boring. The volunteer military spends much of its time sitting around, doing drills that don't use up their ammunition, and eating really bad food. Charley is considering deserting and simply going home, when finally his unit marches into battle.
Their first battle is a bloodbath--his unit tries to march across an open field while rebel soldiers shoot at them from above. Charley isn't sure what he thought a shooting war would be like, but it was certainly nothing like this. As the war continues and Charley is a part of more and more battles, he learns what war really is, and sees more than his share of the horror of it.
I liked that war wasn't glamorized at all in this book--the narrator spoke of the boredom between battles and the horror of the battles themselves. Nothing was made out to be fun about it. I also liked that Charley was so shocked and couldn't get over what he had seen. He was just a kid when he went into war and it wouldn't have been realistic for him to handle it well.
However, this book was a little too simplistic. It didn't give any of the nuances of Charley's thoughts and feelings, and didn't explore the feelings of anyone except this one main character. I would have liked a bit more depth.

I definitely recommend this book to all readers. Gary Paulsen does a great job in showing how Charley feels that he will certainly die, and how he changes from a happy farmer to a man that will kill to stay alive. This was one of the greatest historical fiction books that I have ever read because of all the amazing events that actually took place. For example, Charley and another man use dead bodies to build a wall to stop a vicious wind. This book had a lot of surprises, like when Charley is hit and wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg. I couldn't wait to turn the page because of all these horrendous and shocking surprises. Because this book is only 102 pages, it makes for an astonishing quick read.
A kid at war........2007-05-20
As already stated, this is a fictionalized story of a young 15 year Minnesota boy who fought in the Civil War. Paulsen takes liberties in relating the short life of Charley Goddard. Goddard participated in many major battles of the Civil War such as Bull Run and Gettysburg. He shows the cost of war on the youths that fight it by relating the term soldier's heart. A soldier's heart becomes hardened by the experience of death in battle. He no longer fears death, viewing it as a way to meet the soldiers who proceeded him in death.
This is a story detailing the cruelity of battle. Battle hardens our soldiers and puts severe strains on their mentail peace. This should be remembered in terms of the cost are soldiers are now going through.

Do you like a book with action, drama, and a main character with lots of bravery? Then you should pick up the book Soldier's Heart by Gary Paulsen.
Soldier's Heart is based on a true story about a fifteen-year-old boy in Minnesota named Charley Goddard, who lies about his age to join the First Volunteers of Minnesota, to fight in the Civil War.
The main character in the story is a young man, Charley, for his age, Charley is a very mature man and is a very hard worker in every aspect. When Charley is sent off to get prepared for the war, he battles some conflicts. One conflict that he has to battle is that his mother sends him letters saying the she wants him to come back home. Charley feels bad and at first wants to come home, but these thoughts gradually leave.
I like this book for many reasons. One reason was that I like to read about historical fiction, and about the Civil War. Another reason why I like this book was because the main character, "Charley," was only fifteen, and I can relate a lot to the things that he thought and what was going on in his head. The last reason is because the author had a good perspective of what went on during the war.
Gary Paulsen was the author of the book Soldier's Heart. He has also written many other books such as Brian's Winter, Hatchet, The Crossing, The Rifle, and Danger on the Midnight River. Paulsen is able to have a great knowledge because he went to war and fought for our country.
The part in the story that I did not care for was the battlefields. They seemed like they were made up, because of the location. I also did not like how the story had started out. I would have liked to know a little bit more about his family and the backgrounds that Charley lived in.
I would give this book four out of five stars. I would recommend this book to people who like to know historical facts about the Civil War and the battles that were fought in it. Overall, Soldier's Heart is an exciting, historical, and adventurous book that anyone would enjoy to read.
Not what i expected but a good read.......2007-03-09
I didn't realize how short the book was until I already recieved it. It was my fault for not seeing it on the display page but despite how short it is it still provides the reader with an idea of how being on a battlefield during the civil war would be like.

This is a great book on venture capital due diligence.
Don't waste your money.......2006-10-24
I was tremendously disappointed in this book. The cost of $35-50 is definitely a complete rip-off for what you get from the author. All you need to do is refer to pages 227-246. Those are the pages that represent the bibliography. I actually was so pissed off after reading this book that I counted them. In total the author referenced the words and work of 488 author people. There are only 223 pages of text and 6 chapters in the book. I am certain you can do the math but I'll do it for you.
There are on average more than 2 references per page and over 80 per chapter. It's as though the author has never had an original thought of his own. If I wanted to hire somebody to go out and look up the work of other people I would have done that. I was expecting the author to use his own first-hand knowledge and experience in order to help educate and inform others such as myself about the process. Instead, what I got was something a high school student would do while trying to complete a report for homework. My only question is who is less ethical: the author or the publishing company that let this slide through the screening process. For all of those that gave this book 5 stars I can only guess that you don't enjoy actually reading.
Better than most but incomplete.......2006-08-01
This book gives a good survey on the due diligence process and attempts to teach the reader other important aspects of venture capital by connecting it to the due diligence process. However, the author comes up short in addressing some of the more important subject areas.
Overall it is a pretty good book but you will need to by a few more if you want a really good understanding of the entire process. "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" is the best book I've come across on the topic of venture capital and it is almost three times the size of this one and contains a lot more material and topics. This book would definately fill in the gaps in "Venture Capital Due Diligence." You might want to get both since there aren't too many good books on the topic.

This is one of the very few genuinely good and resourceful books on venture capital because it not only discusses a broad range of topics, but it does so in detail. I especially enjoyed the thematic approach Mr. Camp used to tie in venture due diligence for entrepreneurs. However, it comesup short on discussing other important topics like in-depth valuations, prospecting for money, and how to grow your business.
However,this book does deliver in certain areas and should be on the reading list of all entrepreneurs and should be used in conjunction with
"The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" (the best book on VC) and
"Term Sheets & Valuations"
In my view, after reading and studying these three books, any high-technology entrepreneur will be adequately prepared to face the challenges of raising venture capital and leading their company to success.
Finally, the knowledge gained from these 3 books will no doubt impress venture capitalists and demonstrate a level of confidence that should encourage venture funding. I continue to read books on start-up companies and venture capital and these 3 are by far the very best of the large bunch out there.

I was a little disappointed with the latest from Brandon Massey, but even with a few errors and problems I stilled enjoyed the book. The story was interesting and even though a few of the storylines were a little soapish I thought he tied everything together pretty well at the end. I'm not going to provide a summary since so many others have done so, but I will break down the best and worst parts of the book.
I loved:
The characters were really wonderful and I could understand Kym's frustration with her sister. I was sad when a major character dies and I was curious to understand more of the mysterious stranger Lance. I felt like Lance's descent into madness was wonderfully played and I wish we could get a prequel that reveals more of his life and struggles with "hell."
As a horror fan, I'm always happy when a new twist or angle is used on an old story. Of course, this is about werewolves, but I loved how Massey develop an interesting theory of the wolves origin. By the end of the book I particularly became even more fascinated with their existence.
I hated:
Sometimes the writing could be to simplistic. For example, Kym's mother was described in the beginning of the book and then midway through we learned her mother became "crazy." Massey's writing isn't sophisticated enough to really convey the character's emotions so the scene and anxiety that the character feels comes across as flat. The attraction between two main characters also didn't seem very logical, it felt like he added it solely for the drama.
Besides my problem with the writing, I finished the book in two days and couldn't put it down. It was a light quick read and I can't wait to see what he will come out with next.

Because we may never know what is in store. On top of this being a good read it showed us the importance of never taking advantage that there will be a tomorrow. Especially when it comes to your family. Brandon is great at what he does and you are truly missing out if you have not read this one or any of his others.

I read this book in one day. It was captivating, exciting, thrilling, and thoroughly entertaining...all the things I have come to expect from a Brandon Massey novel. Like all of Mr. Massey books I have read, this one held me the most captive. Don't get it twisted I love all his books and look forward to the next one, but this particular book through me for a loop. I usually can figure out the heros and heroines, but the ending left me pleasntly pleased. Keep writing and I'll keep reading them!

This book deserves a much wider audience. No matter how bad you think things are in Guantanamo, this book makes clear that the reality is ten times worse. Margulies is extremely knowledgeable about the issues, and he's a fine writer. It is hard not to feel ashamed -- and outraged -- by the injustices that are occurring under our flag. Let me add that I do not know (and have never met) the author, Joseph Margulies.
Extremely well-written, intelligent arguments........2007-07-12
One of the few books I've read about any controversial topic that resists the temptation to start name-calling, insult-slinging and obvious political agendas.
Dr. Margulies succeeds in explaining legal arguments in a way that is engaging and not condescending. He addresses every question you could have about torture and then some. He does something many authors fail to do: he argues his point in a greater context than the argument itself. That is to say, anyone can argue torture in the context of laws or the Geneva Convetions. Dr. Margulies goes further and discusses torture in the context of security for civilians and soldiers and foriegn policy, and then also provides the background for the writing of the Geneva Conventions and why we have refrained from torture in the past.
Absolutely enlightening.
Makes You Wonder Why Bush Is Not In Prison.......2007-01-05
Robert McNamara noted (about WWII), "LeMay said if we lost the war that we would have all been prosecuted as war criminals. And I think he's right. He... and I'd say I... were behaving as war criminals." No question that the only thing that keeps Bush, Rumsfeldt, etc. out of jail is that fact that they are protected by our country's hard to challenge power. If we were a broken power rather than a great power, it seems certain that someone would try to lock them up.
This book confirms that many laws, national and international, regarding torture, detention, and so on have been willfully violated. It is a compelling and disturbing story. And the final chapters are still to be written.
Human right & Guantanamo.......2006-11-02
This is good research book written by a powerful human right lawyer professor who gave a first hand litigation on behalf of the detainees deemed titled as enemy combatants who lost the dignity and qualification of being human.
He argued with precedents that during war time, enemy combatants had their rights and were subject to Geneva Convention protection. In Guantanamo Bay detention center, he documented that detainees were subject to interrogative techniques being abusive, illegal and immoral. He questioned such reign of terror method to get information to protect Americans are doubtful.
He showed that many of the detainees were the unlikely ones at the wrong time at the wrong place being rounded and ended up at Camp Delta. The torture on these 'suspects' may make a sharp contrast to American Constitution of all men are created equal, due process, human rights and rule of laws. Why it happened in the country with such high moral ground? Do we hear the born-again call for turning the other cheek?
This book will answer why the President justify the camp and technique for protecting the American people.
A MUST READ FOR EVERY REAL AMERICAN.......2006-10-11
see through the baloney and propaganda and consider the serious crimes our current regime commits against justice, truth, and humanity.
Every child in America should study this book instead of preparing for Bush's set-up-for-failure NCLB tests which spell the end of public education in America. The educated cannot be so easily fooled.
Then read Elaine Cassell's book on Bush and the end of civil liberties, and the HOnorable Senator Byrd's book on Bush.
Then have a beer with Michael Moore and put up your feet on the coffee table, dear, because it's all over anyway but the domestic spying. Hello, 1984, all over again.

An excellent guide to truly understanding the numbers.......1998-11-07
As someone who works in investment banking, I can say this book is applicable to much more than just due diligence. It can help an analyst through most financial analysis situations(assuming the user knows the basics of how to use and analyze financial statements). What's best about the book is that it goes beyond the theory and academic stuff and gets down to real "how-to's" and "why's". He goes through every account that would appear on the three major financial statements and explains what to look for in them, how to find the answer if it's not readily apparent, what questions to ask and why the questions are important. He also thoroughly examines off-balance sheet, off-income statement and qualitative items that are essential to analysis. Beware, there are no numbers or examples to work through in this book. This book is quite literally one man's experience and intuition put into written form. If you understand that financial analysis is not as cut-and-dry as looking at well-prepared, fully forthcoming financial statements with all the info you need already given, then this book is just what you are looking for. It helps you get the right numbers to which you can apply meaningful financial analysis.

With All Due Respect.......2001-07-27
Robert Morrish has been able to communicate with clarity what healthy discipline is and how to implement strong discipline programs. His writing style makes for easy reading and captivating the audience. The examples he uses to support his thoughts actually provide the catalyst for a paradigm shift for the reader.
Parents and teachers have a dynamic resource for developing or revising strategies already being used to guide our young people. Morrish presents the different styles of discipline that have been used over the years. He points out the philosphy for each and the effectiveness/ineffectiveness of each. He presents a model that has what is best for young people first and foremost. Anyone who supports young people would be hard pressed to argue with his efforts to bring us to a new level of understanding of the concept of discipline.
This book can be used as a model for schools to revise and/or suppport their discipline policy. His model is all inclusive which can only create a stronger school community.
I can honestly report that our school will be incorporating Robert Morrish's suggestions this coming school year.

Funny and engrossing.......2007-05-21
I picked up PAST DUE one night on a whim, knowing nothing about William Lashner or his reputation in the mystery genre. The cover caught my eye, and it looked thick, so being the type who prefers more of an epic story, I snatched it off the shelf and perused the first line.
I was hooked. And the book took off from there.
Lashner created a very funny anti-hero in Victor Carl, a sleazy Philadelphia lawyer intent on keeping his word to find a murdered client's killer. Carl's loyalty sees him encounter dangerous thugs of all types, from members of the Mafia to crooked politicians and judges, to drug dealers and their hangers-on. They all put Carl through the ringer, and do so in such smart and funny ways that many times I found myself laughing out loud at what transpired. The mystery is superb, keeping you guessing until the VERY end, and Carl's occasional visits to his dying father in the hospital are funny and touching all at once. All the characters are drawn to perfection, too, making you believe in them and accenting the story with that much more poignancy.
Lashner's chapter endings are among the best I've ever read. So good, in fact, that I absolutely hated when I had to put the book down. So my only qualm with PAST DUE really only concerns the ending. Lashner has a ton of expectation riding on the climax, dispensing with the humor and getting serious as the end approaches. But then, in one fell swoop, everything turns comical again when we find out who's behind it all and why. Needless to say, I felt let down, almost a bit cheated. Seems he wanted to lighten the mood a bit prematurely.
Nevertheless, I still heartily recommend PAST DUE for any mystery, suspense, or thriller enthusiast out there. The story's a funny, intriguing romp that takes you through the highest courts in Philly to the seediest parts of its underbelly. Truly epic in scope, pick up PAST DUE for a good laugh and a good mystery.
Weak Follow-up to Previous Victor Carl Stories.......2007-03-15
I was greatly disappointed with this book that is lacking the dynamic and intriguing characters of previous Victor Carl books (Specifically, Hostile Witness). Also, I remember the tension and integrety questions of the previous book I mentioned as Victor takes money to basically railroad an innocent man, bankrupts another man, and sleeps with a key witness in a murder tria. I really had to push myself to get through this one. It is also lacking the great interaction with his partner Beth who was prevelent in previous efforts.
I did not care about Joey "Cheaps" Parma and finding his killer nor did I find it the least bit interesting how Joey and his partner stole the suitcase.
I compare Lashner to David Rosenfelt who has been writing Andy Carpenter stories. His books seem to keep the flow of the characters from book to book and all his follow-ups to his brilliant first novel were good in their own right. I hope Mr. Lashner really plans out his next Victor Carl effort or he will lose this reader.
I was not thoroughly impressed.......2007-01-04
This was my first Lashner novel, and unless popular opinion overwhelms me, it'll probably be my last. I'm a big fan of mystery novels and this one just left me a little unexcited. Although I felt I could root for the main character, the rest of the cast seemed unexciting and unmemorable. Lashner's writing style seemed at odds with the genre as well. It came across as too informal, too casual for the story. I followed this book with a Michael Connelly story and that eclipsed this in it's attention-keeping abilities.
Very fun read........2005-06-20
This was my first Lashner novel, and I'm looking forward to tracking down the rest. His characters are like your neighbors, simple and complex if you start digging. The plot is engaging, twists you around and leaves you sitting mistaken in your own predictions but not feeling cheated. Everything makes sense, and most of it is surprising when revealed. It's a long discovery into a story and an old lifestyle, written in a noir style that flows extremely well.

In William Lashner's latest novel, pragmatic lawyer Victor Carl once again finds himself one step away from bankruptcy and one of his few clients - a two-bit crook known as Joey Cheaps - dead. Cheaps rarely paid his bills when he was alive, and as a dead man, all he leaves Carl is a murder mystery that offers little in the way or rewards and a good chance of killing the attorney himself.
Thus opens Past Due, and what ensues is an entertaining, fast-reading thriller. Carl, money-hungry but with enough personal integrity to seek Cheaps's killer despite the lack of financial incentives, finds himself entangled in an older murder mystery. Twenty years earlier, Cheaps assaulted a drug dealer as part of a shakedown, but what was supposed to be a beating turned into a murder. Two decades later, this crime has come back to haunt him and somehow lead to his death.
With few clues, Carl starts investigating, riling, among others, a major crime boss and a state Supreme Court justice. The judge has the ability to make Carl's life miserable, but the crime boss threatens to just end it. Nonetheless, with fatalistic perseverance, Carl pushes on to unearth the truth.
Plotwise, there is little to distinguish Past Due from a number of other mysteries (despite the lawyer protagonist, this is not a legal thriller as very little of the story takes place in a courtroom). What makes this book distinctive, however, is the strong narration of Carl, a likeable loser with a dry sense of humor. So if this looks superficially like just another crime novel, you should be pleasantly surprised by this book which stands out among similar fare.
