Shonen Jump Manga Magic.......2005-11-09

This is easily the best collection of Americanized manga out. As most know, Shonen Jump was at one time a Japanese exclusive magazine that made its hop across the Pacific in 2003 for American fans to enjoy. Since that moment, it's become the best in manga and now contains a majority of the manga juggernauts.

This collection is a great start for those of you who are interested in reading manga, or for those of you who missed out on some of the earlier issues of Shonen Jump and want to catch up on what's going on. It also has the beginnings to the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z mangas, which can't be found in Shonen Jump.

Below is a listing of the manga in this box, as well as a small description of each:

(1) Dragon Ball: This is the start of the Dragon Ball world. It explains the origins of Goku and his relationship with the Dragon Balls.

(2) Dragon Ball Z: The beginning of one of the greatest animes ever in its purest form. Unpolluted with minutes-long shouting and infested with excellent action and story, this details the story of Goku as a father and a husband, as well as following some of the other favorites of the Dragon Ball world.

(3) Naruto: Probably the best in Shonen Jump, Naruto is a tale of a boy fox-demon who wants nothing more than to earn his place in the world, and does so by training to become a ninja, despite the mistrust directed at him by some of his teacher and the hatred he receives from his fellow students.

(4) One Piece: A boy eats the mysterious Devil Fruit at a young age, making his body into rubber and also cursing his body: should he ever fall into water, he would sink instantly to the bottom. Despite that, he wants nothing more than to be the pirate king of a world of oceans.

(5) Shaman King: Yoh, a boy who can not only see ghosts but control them, comes to Tokyo to train to become a powerful shaman in the hopes that one day he'll win the title of Shaman King.

(6) Yu-Gi-Oh!: A story of constant morals and themes, it details a young, pint-sized, pointy-haired boy's struggles with a mysterious puzzle/necklace that grants him dark super powers as well as an alter-ego.

(7) YuYu Hakusho: A juvenile delinquent dies saving a child and finds out that his next was entirely unexpected and therefore gains a chance to come back to life. What he later finds out is coming back to life also makes him a spirit detective.

[note: this review contains a major spoiler for volume 10. If you're not that far along in the series, DO NOT READ.]

Finally, the finals! Yusuke's crew and Team Toguro finally meet up again, and Eat or Be Eaten covers the first three matches (well, two and a half). With Team Toguro never having revealed their fifth member and Team Urameshi having lost Genkai, the first third or so of the book is devoted to the mystery of who each team's fifth member will be. Maybe I'm slow on the uptake, but I found both revelations to be a complete surprise. After that, it's back to the fighting, which comes thick and fast in the Yuyu Hakusho tradition. Togashi, though, is never without a couple of tricks up his sleeve, and manages to keep things not only fast-paced, but interesting as well. The Hiei/Bui battle may be the best we've seen in the series to date. This is a good one. ****

One of the best........2007-03-04

The Yu Yu Hakusho series is one of my favorite manga. It is one of two from the Shonen Jump label. It is a very action-filled manga. It's an older series and I think should soon be considered a classic. If you like Inu-Yasha or Rouroni Kenshin, you'll enjoy Yu Yu Hakusho.

The Dark Tournament continues into the semifinals as Team Urameshi takes on the Fractured Fairy Tales. Yusuke and Mask, though, have something more important than fighting to do, leaving the other three to handle the FFT. Not that that bothers Hiei, who's ready to take on the whole team single-handedly... the Dark Tournament plotline is really starting to get a bit long in the tooth, mostly because there's no real development in this volume; it's the first time I've felt that the Dark Tournament plot was simply fighting for fighting's sake. While it's still fun stuff, I've come to expect a good deal more from Yuyu Hakusho. Not one of the better volumes. *** ½

Togashi fires up a major story arc in this volume. After the rescue of the Ice Princess, Yusuke and co. are off to the Dark Tournament, a multiple-elimination match among sixteen teams of demons to see who's the best fighter. Of course, getting there isn't going to be a breeze, as some of the other possible competitors have already heard about this bunch, and want to knock them out of the competition before it gets underway... the series really perks up when there's something way off on the horizon, and this book is a very good example of that. ****

Yu Yu Hakusho, Vol. 3-The Greatest Manga I've Ever Read.......2005-02-28

What I enjoyed about this volume was the fact that it was Yusuke's very first case, as well as introducting characters that would return (Kurama & Hiei). The characters were well drawn, the action never dropped and there's comedy by-the-barrel-full (Yusuke defeating Bat Master when Genkai said he was the strongest beast in the forest). Overall, if you can only get 1 volume, get this without consideration.

The real story begins........2004-05-27

Okay, Yusuke has spent 2 volumes trying to come back to life. Now that he's finally done so, we must ask ourselves: Okay, he's done that, so now what? Koenma comes in with the answer. It seems he's seen potential in our newly reborn Jr. High School student, and as a result, is now the official underworld detective, solving problems associated with the other world. His first assignment? Finding 3 stolen artifacts that could spell doom for mankind in 1 week, before Koenma's dad gets returns and raises heck! Continuing the trend of the previous volumes, the 3rd book's primary goal is introduce us to the major players in the storyline, something I consider it does so well. Here, the 3 major new characters introduced are pretty boy kitsune in disguise, Shuichi Minamino, or Kurama as he's truly known, 3-eyed swordsman Hiei, and the aging yet powerful psychic Genkai. Thankfully the series takes time bringing them all in and not rushing their welcome. Although it's the same excellent storyline the anime follows, there are a few differences, for example we go a bit deeper into Kurama's decision to stay by his human mother's side. And also, the artwork continues to excel. I actually prefer the "cutesy" design of the characters as opposed to the more serious designs used for the anime(although those are pretty cool too.). In the end we have another excellent volume of Yu Yu Hakusho, and I definitely suggest fans of the anime check it out.

I have seen all the episodes and i have buy all the books of it.They are very cool so read them.And now iam reading the ones of Rurouni Kenshin.I have all the movies of Yu Yu Hakusho they are extremly brutal you gotta read them.The first time i see the episodes of Yu Yu Hakusho i taught it was junk but they are excellent.

Ok, I saw one eppisode of the show and thought it was cool. Then I bought the manga and I now am totally in love with the whole thing! The books are so cool, and how its read from right to left is really fun! In my opinion, if you love the show, or like me saw one eppisode and thought it was interesting, you will love this no matter what.

A Must for all Togashi fans.......2007-01-09

The first manga I ever read was Yu Yu Hakusho, that was 5 years ago. This series is what caused me to look for more and to be exposed to the wonderful world of anime and manga.

Frankly, I can not agree with the commenter below. I also am Christian, I am a huge fan of G.K. Chesterton and C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity. And this series is perfectly, utterly harmless. If the commenter below has a problem with mythical stories and curses, I suggest they read "Ethics of Elfland" by G.K Chesterton.

That being said, if you know anything about Japan's religious history, you'd know that mainly they are Shinto and Buddhist. Naturally, this is reflected in their works, but this does not make it an occult work, nor does this mean it has occult overtones. Having 'powers,' as some may call it does not equal occult, and spirits do not equal occult. Shinto and Buddhism are not occult religious whatsoever. Honestly, I have read Grimm's Fairly Tales with more violence and magic, yet because they come from the Western Christian world, I doubt the commenter below would have problems with her daughter reading them.

As an actual review of this manga, I give it 5 stars. Sure, it may not be the most "in depth" series you could find, but it is well planned out with an interesting story, good character development and (in my opinion) good art. If you've read volume 1, volume 2 goes basically along the same lines. Yusuke, though outwardly stupid and short tempered, proves himself to be at heart a good guy. As in volume 1, volume 2 contains Yusuke's struggles to return to the world of the living. This volume is more of a precursor to the more shonen story line that begins in vol.3 and continues through various arks for the rest of the series.

So, buy this manga! If you liked volume 1, you'll like volume 2. Yu Yu Hakusho is great for all ages, and is a necessity for all manga fans, both veterans and newbies.

I don't recommend.......2006-04-28

My step-daughter, 13, really got into this series, much to my husband's & my chagrin. As with many Japanime & manga series, this one is chock full of ghosts, curses, mystical storylines, & occultic overtones. Though I know many young readers will disagree with me (& that's quite alright, as I've read these books & know what's in them), this series is simply not appropriate for young ones, especially Christians. If you simply do not want your child reading Japanime porn, but you're not concerned with the occultic issues, then you will probably be fine with this series.

If you're looking for something similar, minus the aforementioned details, check out the Serenity series by Realbuzz Studios. I provided step-daughter with those after reading them, & she loves them.

Most people don't write reviews on each of the books in a manga series. Instead they go and write a review on the first book and use that same review to review the entire series. But were does that leave the poor individual volumes? I am here on the behalf of those unrated/unreviewed volumes!

This is going to be a short review, as I don't want to give away very much and it is a rather short book after all. This volume includes chapters 9-17 and is about Yusuke's further adventures as a ghost. A short synopsis of each of the stories: He saves a little ghost girl from hell, helps save a girl from a curse (sort of), gets saved by a girl (Keiko), and then helps a boy fulfill his dream of becoming a boxer. And that is all I can say without giving anything away. Now go read it!
