Book Description

The well-known and very popular Catholic couple, Scott and Kimberly Hahn, have been constantly travelling and speaking all over North America for the last few years about their conversion to the Catholic Church. Now these two outstanding Catholic apologists tell in their own words about the incredible spiritual journey that led them to embrace Catholicism. Scott Hahn was a Presbyterian minister, the top student in his seminary class, a brilliant Scripture scholar, and militantly anti-Catholic ... until he reluctantly began to discover that his "enemy" had all the right answers. Kimberly, also a top-notch theology student in the seminary, is the daughter of a well-known Protestant minister, and went through a tremendous "dark night of the soul" after Scott converted to Catholicism.

Their conversion story and love for the Church has captured the hearts and minds of thousands of lukewarm Catholics and brought them back into an active participation in the Church. They have also influenced countless conversions to Catholicism among their friends and others who have heard their powerful testimony.

Written with simplicity, charity, grace and wit, the Hahns' deep love and knowledge of Christ and of Scripture is evident and contagious throughout their story. Their love of truth and of neighbor is equally evident, and their theological focus on the great importance of the family, both biological and spiritual, will be a source of inspiration for all readers.

After reading My Life On The Rock, by Jeff Cavins, I was dieing to know what his wife must have experienced during her husbands "coming home". It was great to be able to read about Scott's wife's experience. I think all Catholics should recommend this book to their non-catholic friends and family!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2007-07-19

This book was amazing, I felt myself going through the ups and downs of the Hahns. Great primer for the more difficult apologetics books.

4 out of 5 stars This detective novel is a classic--but it's also a lot of fun........2007-09-17

I'll confess that I almost put The Woman in White down after the first fifty pages or so. It seemed obvious to me what would happen: a beautiful and delicate heiress falls in love with a poor drawing master, but is forced to renounce him for the evil nobleman who really only wants her money. Then, the intricate plotting (the story is related in the voices of different characters) drew me in and the plot turned out to be not quite so obvious, after all. Sure, you can read quickly past some of the verbose descriptions, Marion is too good to be true, and Collins does deal in stock figures when it comes to the "lower" classes. Despite these flaws, the mystery at the heart of the novel will keep you turning the pages. It's a wonderful diversion when you're too tired for more weighty reading matter and you'd like a detective story that's decidedly NOT contemporary. The portrait of the "invalid" uncle, Mr. Fairlie, is wickedly delicious, too. Have fun.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! I just finished this book.......2007-08-01

and I loved it. I couldn't put it down. It is a 19th century puzzle that is so well written and so much fun.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Victorian suspense.......2007-07-10

Collin's novel is the best example of Victorian mystery and suspense. Full of tangential story lines and detailed, lush descriptions of nineteenth-century England. A must-read for any student of literature and anyone interested in Victorian history and culture.

5 out of 5 stars Totally gripping.......2007-06-26

I have read this book several times and just reread it after many years. I don't understand those who think it hard to follow. If one pays attention the plot is easily understood. Too many people are used to being spoonfed and have trouble with Dickens and Collins because they demand attention.

This book is frightening and not in any supernatural way but because I wondered what I would do if I had been Laura or Anne, shut away in an asylum against my will. what would I do if I were trapped and unable to reach anyone to help me? It's this helplessness that is so frightening and the inability for the law to do anything without proof.

I highly recommend this book. And Marian Halcamb is a true heroine in a Victorian era, fighting back at injustice. These are characters you won't soon forget although Laura is very much in the Dickens mode: pretty, complaisant, mostly, and depending on others. A woman of her times.

Book Description

Maddie Townsend might live in a town called Serenity, but there's been nothing calm or peaceful about her life since her marriage broke up. This stay-at-home mom has no job skills, an out-of-control sixteen-year-old son, a talkative fourteen-year-old who's suddenly gone silent, a six-year-old daughter whose heart is broken, an ex-husband whose younger girlfriend is expecting their baby and two best friends who think she's somehow qualified to help them open a fitness spa for women.

But if Maddie is a tad on edge with all that on her plate, it's nothing compared to the chaos that ensues when she discovers that her son's baseball coach has feelings for her and the whole town disapproves. Maddie's faced a lot of challenges lately with strength and resolve, but Cal Maddox may turn out to be more than she can handle.

Then again, he could just be the one man in all of South Carolina who can help her find serenity.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars wonderful book, wonderful writing..........2007-09-08

when I picked up this book from the library of the recommendation of a friend, I had no idea I would like it so much. The witing is wonderful...it seems to give a very realistic picture of the turmoil that is caused among children of divorced families, and the adjustments they need to make. Most of all,the book didnt try to play nice...it potrays very clearly the insensitivity of the spouses who cause the divorce, in terms of expectations regarding the children ..and how they are expected to behave towards their n ew loves. The best part comes initially in the book when Maddie wants to "curse Dr. Phil" and all those therapists who dole out inane advise about the "best interests of the child". The writing is very fluid and humorous as well. I cant wait to read her other books.

4 out of 5 stars A cozy read...........2007-07-08

I did like this book - but it would have felt much fresher if I hadn't read it right after reading Jennifer Crusie's TELL ME LIES, which tells a similar story of a cheating husband and a wife who finds a new flame. The Crusie book has more levels, plus a convoluted mystery, although it does not get into the head of the cheating husband as Woods does. I really liked the dialogue, especially for the teen-age and younger kids; it rang true. The small town atmosphere was also well-rendered, with just enough love of gossip and willingness to believe the worst to make it a less than idyllic place to live. The overall tone and the ending were cozy, even if several elements were rather sad. But, then again, divorce is sad no matter how happily some people end up.

4 out of 5 stars 1st in the Sweet Magnolias Trilogy.......2007-05-14

1st novel of The Sweet Magnolias series. The local baseball (ex-professional) falls in love with his stars high school baseball player mother. The town is in up roar because she is not yet divorced and he is much younger than her.... Maddie's husband has left her with three children to live with is pregnant girlfriend. Her frieds the Sweet Magnolias talk her into opening a spa for women and to give love a chance... Check out the whole series A Slice of Heaven (2) and Feels Like Family (3).

5 out of 5 stars Another great read by Sherryl Woods.......2007-03-15

As always, Sherryl Woods gives us a heart-warming, well-written story about love and values. Keep up the great work Sherryl - your books are a delight!

4 out of 5 stars Small-town story you'll love.......2007-03-15

Stealing Home by Sherryl Woods is one of the best "chick lit" books I have read in a while. Maybe I identified with it because the main character's husband left her in a cliched manner. Maybe I identified with a woman struggling to get on her feet after she had been betrayed and trying to keep her kids on their feet as well. Whatever the case may be I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Stealing Home is set in the fictional small town of Serenity, North Carolina. Serenity needs a little boost. Their downtown is slumping. Big box stores have moved in and mom and pop stores have moved out.

Maddie needs a boost too. Her husband of 20 years has left her for his nurse. She thinks she has no marketable skills. She has been a stay-at-home mom for the 16 odd years and has been busy raising their three kids. Stealing Home also has eccentric characters, as all Southern books should. It has a cast of strong female friends who rally around Maddie and her kids. Then enter the love interest--a much younger man and her son's high school baseball coach. The book can only get better from there.

For the faint of heart there is some minor language, but it is not gratuitous. It was used in context mainly when the 16-year-old son is in conflict with his father. There are also some steamy scenes, but I give this a PG rating for alluding to the scenes and not really describing them, which is much better in my mind. It leaves much more to the imagination.

All in all, I loved Stealing Home. I read it in one day when my daughter was home with the stomach flu. I even stayed up late to finish it because I had to know how it would end. This is the first book in a trilogy, and I already feel committed to these characters. I can't wait to read the next 2 books, especially if they are as good as the first.

Armchair Interviews says: A chick lit with a message many women can relate to.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational book: One of Mary's many beautiful homes! .......2007-06-28

This book is larger than a person might think.
Even though the book is about just one home (ie: ONE of Mary's favorite homes), each page is filled with inspirational ideas. Page after page, the viewer of Mary's favorite dream home will be dazzled by the way in which Mary puts colors and collections (& garden ideas) together. Wow!

Interestingly enough, since this book was written, Mary has already re-decorated this home just recently! So if you want to see how Mary has transformed this dream home even further, you can see the new transformations in the latest iussue of Mary's HOME COMPANION MAGAZINE(Spring 2007 issue). It's fun to refer back to this book, and then to look inside the Spring 2007 magazine photos of Mary's creative ideas expressed once more in her "favorite dream home".

Absolutely STUNNING book. I have poured over this one MANY times. Something for everyone...whether you like Shabby Chic, classic ME cherries, beautiful English Garden, gorgeous book. So Cottagey and sweet. Very sentimental and collected....sort of a managed, organized, slightly tangled chaos of great stuff!

I was not dissapointed. I'm more of the shabby chic, cottage garden type and I loved it. There was also all the classic Mary stuff, so truly I think it would please most.

Cupcakes have been going through a resurgence in popularity and this is a great book for trying new recipes. There are also recipes for cookies, muffins, quick breads and pies. I tried the black and white cupcake recipe and they turned out great! A great addition to a baking enthusiast's collection.

Absolutely awesome baking book! It has a small selection on everything you'd want to make: cookies, bars, coffee cakes and then some impressive but simple to make layer cakes and cupcakes. I made the carrot cake and the chocolate cake with brandied whipped cream... a little time consuming but not complicated and very very impressive. I highly recommend it if you are looking for recipes you can use for special occasions and want a real alternative to the boring cake mixes.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-06-03

I saw a quilt in this book in a monthly quilting magazine and had to buy the book to make the quilt. I made the quilt and it is absolutely lovely. The hand work took a long time. There is more hand work than machine piecing. The directions and pictures in this book make the book easy to follow. I recommend this book for anyone who is a little more advanced than a beginner. I have been quilting for 30 years and found it challenging but rewarding. Loved this book!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful quilt book.......2007-03-07

This book has beautiful pictures as well as great instructions. The house quilt, which is the bulk of the book, is unique and very detailed.
There is also a beautiful flag quilt which was my first project out of this book and I will definately do more.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and Absolutely Delightful!.......2006-08-28

Primarily for quilters, this lovely book includes excellent instructions for an applique quilt top as well as inspiration and suggestions for smaller cotton and wool applique projects, a few designs for rug hooking, and two "visits" to homes of interesting folk artisans, arranged according to the calendar year and its holidays. The book's best feature is its complexity, not of instructions, which are admirably clear and straightforward, but rather, of design. The featured quilt top, nine appliqued houses and their front gardens, is created twice, once by each author, a choice that hints at the wealth of possibilities available to readers. Further, each house block includes many, many design elements that tempt the adventurous reader to use them in different and original ways. The writing is warm and encouraging, the patterns full size and not overlapped, and the photography of both finished projects and artisans' homes visited is beautiful. Many instruction books are shared, shelved, or discarded once the skills are learned. Allen and Alma's Home Sweet Home is a book readers will want to browse, savor, and save.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book..... BUY IT!!!.......2006-02-28

I bought this book after wanting it for a long time. I saw my online friends making the main house quilt and decided I didn't want to be too far behind, so went and got it. I have done the first block and am so excited! The book is beautiful, the pages glossy and full of color. I especially like how there are 2 versions of the same quilt. Just gives you more options. I personally am doing mine in very different colors from the book ones just to make it exciting and new to work on.

The main quilt is probably not for absolute beginners, but great for someone who loves needleturn applique. The blocks and nice and big - you can get lots of detail done on each block. A beginner might enjoy making it if they used a different applique method such as fusible web. But then again, why not just jump in and get both feet wet and learn to needleturn at the same time!

There are other projects in the book which look great, though I probably won't make them as I bought it mainly for the house quilt.

Barb Adams and Alma Allen do such wonderful work with their quilts and books. This book certainly lives up to their good reputation.

      Book Description

Laura Stoddart has a devoted following who love the humor and idiosyncrasy of her exquisite, tiny drawings. Now, in this prettiest and wittiest of anthologies, she puts drudgery in its place and elevates the charms of lolling about to new heights. What could be more pleasurable than puttering into the garden, trowel in hand? Perhaps puttering back out, with a cool drink in place of said trowel. Ms. Stoddart's droll little figures toil and tarry their way across page after page of ironic quotations and elegant verse. From Jane Austen to Benjamin Franklin, from Oscar Wilde to oft-quoted "Anonymous"--everyone has something to say about the pleasures of a well-kept house, the charms of an overgrown garden, and the surprisingly refreshing effect that five minutes spent on a patch of green grass can produce. This delightful primer on all things sweet is the perfect house gift--guaranteed to gain all indulgent souls direct entree to la dolce vita!

5 out of 5 stars charmed by gardens.......2006-07-24

The best word for this book is "charming." It will satisfy anyone who enjoys gardens and fabulous illustrations and quotes. If you are a fan of Laura Stoddart's artwork, then this book is a must have. It is a great not-too-small-not-too-big size, excellent quality, and makes a great conversation piece on the coffee table. You don't have to be a gardener yourself to enjoy Stoddart's charming collection. I live in an 11 story apartment, with no yard of my own, but reading this book makes me feel as though I've taken a trip to the countryside.

      4 out of 5 stars Sweet humor...........2001-05-24

THE SWEET LIFE is a short book filled with somewhat profound thoughts Laura Stoddart compiled from famous and not-so-famous sources and beautiful illustrations she apparently drew. She thanks her father for the words and her mother for the pictures. Those familiar with A CHILD'S GARDEN OF VERSES might appreciate THE SWEET LIFE as the adult version of a garden of verses.

For example, "Who loves a garden, loves a greenhouse too" said William Cowper. Or, these lines by William Cobbett:

"How much better, during a long a dreary winter, for daughters, and even sons, to assist, or attend, their mother in the greenhouse, than to be seated with her at cards, or, in the blubbering over a stupid novel, or at any other amusement that can possibly be conceived!"

This is the sort of book I like to take with me to the privvy chamber where I meditate daily, or give to others as a little gift from the heart.

      4 out of 5 stars Good story.......2006-08-02

It was good. I liked it because they spent time together and with
      their grandmother.

5 out of 5 stars The Callahan Cousins.......2006-01-02

The sequel to `The Callahan Cousins, Summer Begins', is `The Callahan Cousins, Home Sweet Home". This book is just as good as the first one.
It is full of adventure, mystery, and some sadness.
The book is about the three Callahan cousins, Hilary, Kate, Neeve, and Phoebe and a few of their adventures on Gull Island; on of which their Grandma Gee, ownes twelve acres of land on.
One of the cousins, Neeve, finds some disturbing information about her family on the island during their stay. All through the book she is trying to find more information.
The four cousins also have a task put in front of them from Gee, decorating a sort of second home down the hill from the house, that they call, `the Dorm'.
The girls are very excited and Phoebe, the most inteligent of the four, emidiatly starts taking notes and writes down the supplies they need.
Recently the cousins made a weird kind of friendship with their enemy, Sloan Bicket. Now, Sloan has invited them to a party. When the cousins see her at the sailing clinic the next day, Sloan is acting as bossy and mean as ever.
Later in the book, Hilary, Kate, Phobe, and Neeve, find out why Sloan always acts so two-faced.
All of the Callahan cousins solve their problems by the end of the book.
I liked this book because it seemed so realistic, a very adventurous read. This book is definatly up there in the top ten.

      4 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!.......2005-12-29

The Callahan Cousins: Home Sweet Home is the sequel to The Callahan Cousins: Summer Begins. In this adventure the four Callahan cousins: Neeve, Kate, Hillary and Phoebe--are spending the summer at their grandmother's estate on Gull Island where their grandmother Gee has given them free rein to refurbish and move into the Dorm (guesthouse).

While The Callahan Cousins: Summer Begins is Hillary's tale, this book is told from the Neeve's perspective.

Neeve and Kate have differing opinions about the redecorating of the Dorm. Both girls want control of the Dorm's decor. When the four cousins begin to search the main house's attic for items that can be used in their new digs, Neeve discovers a wedding photo of her father and a woman who is not her mother. Neeve is shocked and hides the photo from her cousins.

The cousins are invited to mean-spirited Sloan's house (she lives on Gull Island year round) for a sleepover. The cousins accept the invitation with the thought that they would seek revenge on Sloan because she insulted two of the cousins. Gee learns of their plans and firmly instructs that they are not to seek their revenge.

While at the sleepover, Neeve discovers some photographs that further shock her and she is forced to trade the cosmetics she's collected all over the world for them. Neeve's cousins know something is bothering Neeve but she won't confide her worries. She believes her father was married to another woman, and after overhearing an adult conversation, wonders if he might have been responsible for his first wife's death? And does he have other children that she is not aware of?

Family secrets are eventually explained, relationships are sorted out and the books end is satisfying for all.

Armchair Interviews says: The Callahan Cousins: Home Sweet Home is a delightful story of family, friendship and sticking together and trusting your loved ones. In an era where Young Adult novels tend toward the dark and gritty, this novel is a breath of fresh air. It's a fast, fun and interesting read. And it has a strong moral compass. And who doesn't want their children to read books with a positive message!

5 out of 5 stars A fresh and fun addition to the Callahan Cousins series.......2005-09-24

In the sequel to THE CALLAHAN COUSINS #1: SUMMER BEGINS, the four Callahan cousins --- Neeve, Hillary, Kate and Phoebe --- are planning their move into their grandmother Gee's guesthouse, the Dorm. While the first book was truly Hillary's tale, this one is from the viewpoint of Neeve. Kate and Neeve squabble over the redecorating of the shabby area, both wanting to plan the new look. As the girls scout the attic searching for usable finds for their new lair, Neeve discovers a shocking old wedding photograph of her father --- but the bride is not her mother. Completely flabbergasted, Neeve hides the photo and doesn't mention it to anyone.

Sloan, the meanest girl on Gull Island, invites the cousins to a sleepover. When Sloan insults two of the cousins, Neeve talks the others into accepting the invitation with the plan of getting even somehow. But Gee gets wind of their revenge plan and squashes it.

The girls begin cleaning and painting the Dorm, planning to amaze Gee with a big unveiling of the freshly decorated guesthouse. Meanwhile, Gee delights the cousins by giving them driving lessons "just in case of an emergency."

Neeve discovers that Sloan has something that Neeve desires with her whole heart. She trades her case of exotic makeup without telling her cousins what she's trading for, which leaves them confused and worried.

The mystery surrounding the puzzling wedding photo deepens when Sloan cryptically mentions the girl in the pictures, adding that her mother says how sad it all ended, and that everyone on Gull Island was upset. Neeve is more anxious than ever. What is the story? Did her father do something wrong? Was he actually married before? Why wouldn't he tell her? Could he have other children?

An intriguing mystery, a fabulously cozy setting, and the friendship of "cousins forever" add up to another fresh, fun read in this series. If the conflicts are rather easily solved (as in the averted revenge scenario) and relationships/settings/meals tend to be just a bit too perfect, it all adds to the very high "escape reading" enjoyment factor.

The Callahan Cousins is a wounderful, new, edge-of-your-seat novel great for girls 9-12. The book is about four cousins the same age (12), who come to stay alone together with there Grandmother at an island over the summer. During which, they have TONS of adventures!
This is the second book of the series, and I really enjoyed it. I prefer the first book's plot, and I reccomend reading that first. Even so, I bought this book as soon as I could get my hands on it, read it the day I bought it (move over Nancy Drew - it's another edge-of-your-seat saga), then turned around and reread it. It's all-around fabulous!
The Callahan Cousins is a wounderful series for late elementary-schooled girls, possibly reaching up to middle. (I am a middle school girl myself.) It has no mature content, and it's fun to go along with the girls on their many cliff-hanging adventures! Also, girls will like the fact that it's realistic fiction, but has some points where you've got to believe it's untrue. Also, their Grandmother isn't overly involved in their stay, so it seems like the girls have the wonderful freedom they're set to have - under a protectful eye but not bombarded.
The Callahan Cousins will be a surefire hit with girls!
