Rabbit Ears Treasury of Tall Tales Volume I.......2007-04-05
Thia is was very enjoyable and easy to listen to. I would feel amyone no mater their age would enjoy this listening to this book.
Easy on the ears for the whole family.......2006-09-24
I purchased this for my daughter's fifth birthday and was very pleased with this collection.
Things I liked about Rabbit Ears Treasury of American Tall Tales:
1. Garrison Keillor has an amazing reading ability. He is easy for everyone to listen to.
2. Each story was backed by original music, written to enhance the mood of the story. It was well played and enjoyable.
3. Almost all of the tales were enjoyed by everyone in my family.
4. Each was an appropriate amount of time (approximately 30 minute per story) to hold interest and provide detail.
5. We have listened to the stories over and over, and no one is tired of them yet!
6. The vocabulary is not dumbed down, but understandable in context.
Things I didn't like:
1. Rip Van Winkle was a bit scary to my five year old. The ghosts' decision to sabotage Rip's future with his family really bothered her a great deal.
2. Occasionally the audio became difficult to hear. Repeat listenings and cranking the sound during quiet moments helped, but shouldn't have been necessary.
3. The bit about Johnny Appleseed believing he will have three angel brides in heaven if he remains pure on earth just kept bringing my mind back to the 9/11 sickos who believed killing innocents would mean they would get virgins in heaven. That's my own personal connection, so it shouldn't be troublesome to kids listening to the story (though adults reading this might feel squeamish after seeing this connection. Sorry.)
This is great for car trips, and a real entertainment bargain. Overall, I would recommend this CD and would buy more Rabbit Ears audio cds in the future.

Customer Reviews:
Johnny Appleseed.......2007-03-22
I love this book. We are reading tall tales in my classroom and I think Johnny Appleseed by Steven Kellogg was my favorite tall tale book out of all the books my teacher read to the class. I like how Johnny helped everyone, but I love the fact that he planted apple trees so that evryone could have apples to eat. I like apples. This was a great book!
An American Classic (good history supplement).......2006-06-24
Almost 5 Stars
In this wonderfully illustrated children's book, Steven Kellogg mixes history and legend to tell a charming tale. Sometimes, the illustrations tell the story without the need for words.
Because of the lengthy text on the pages and the more mature vocabulary used, as well as two different discussions about death, this book is really geared towards the eight to twelve category.
The author includes a note at the end of the book to clarify where history ends and legend beings--as well as can be done. And the map at the back of the book will help children visualize his life-long journey.
Good Book - Often overlooked.......2006-02-27
There aren't enough children's stories that are based on American heroes, so this one definitely desreves much recognition. Appleseed's character is based on a true character, yet there is a a fair amount of myth in the story to keep things interesting and the children engaged; this book is a definitely a treat
An Interesting Book About Johnny Appleseed/Chapman.......2005-12-18
My children and I seem to be on a Johnny Appleseed binge. This is one of the three books that we have read lately and our second favorite.
This book begins with some background on John Chapman, his birth, his mother's and baby brother's early death, and his fathers remarriage and the subsequent household that resulted in 11 children.
We are given to understand that young John retreated to the outdoors to escape "from his boisterous household" (lol). And we are told that animals sensed his gentleness and responded in kind. We also see John befriending Indians and clearing the woods in spots to plant his beloved trees.
Much of the old ways of life are shown. There are pictures of covered wagons being pulled by oxen, as well as a house raising. The War of 1812 is mentioned briefly, as well as the fears settlers had of the Indians at that time. Unlike Aliki's book, this one does not describe how some of the difficulties with the Native Americans came as a result of the actions of the settlers. And you don't quite get the sense of there being good settlers and bad, good Indians and bad, as you do from the latter book.
Still this book has much to teach and there is a lot to point out and discuss. Besides the factual matters mentioned above there are several tall tales such as the one about the soles of John's feet being so tough that a rattlesnake fangs couldn't penetrate them, and the one about his frolicking with bear cubs while mama bear watched.
[By the way, this book does a better job than most in pointing out that many of these stories are tall tales.]
The book ends with Johnny going further west into the wilds of Indiana (LOL) where he eventually runs into the children of the children he used to tell stories to.
Four stars. A very nice book. The artwork is distinctive and there are many opportunities for children to learn some of our country's folk heroes.
Good Book.......2003-03-11
John Chapman was born on Sept. 26, 1774. He had a rough childhood when his father left for the Revolutionary War and his mother and brother died before his second birthday. His father eventually remarried by the time he was six. The Chapmanýs lived on an apple orchard and used the apples for many things including sauces, cider, vinegar, and apple butter. When he was old enough to leave the home he went to the Allegheny Mountains and planted a small orchard. He ventured through the Pennsylvania Forest and continued to plant small orchards along his way. He befriended the pioneers and was a friend to the animals as well. Johnny soon became known as Johnny Appleseed because of the small orchards he planted all over the country. Storytellers always had a new tall tale about his survival in the wilderness. In March of 1845 Johnny became ill while trudging through a snowstorm and died a few days later. I would recommend this book because it teaches and informs us of a guy who was a great legend. He was known for planting many orchards and surviving in the wilderness. He was a brave man and who knows what our world would be like without him. ~ Katelyn Carson

Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Definitely not the action/adventure hero I was looking for as a child. American, too, I think, so that meant I was less interested. when it comes right down to it, planting fruit is really not that interesting a story if you are looking for something fun.
Glad to have Johnny in the house!.......2006-03-09
This is enjoyable to read and we're happy to own it. Since this is such a timeless tale, we feel it's a must for any library. The artwork is unique and the tale is cleverly written in rhyme. It's thicker than most paperback books this size.

A Cherished Legend told with Beautiful Simplicity.......2005-06-01
The story of Johnny Appleseed has long been a favorite, cherished legend of the American frontier for generations of young children, and this magical collaboration between poet Lindbergh and illustrator Jakobsen is a sweet and simple way to introduce it. Both poem and illustrations are beautifully simple, lacking all artiface, and are thus wonderfully appropriate for descibing a legend famous for those same qualities.
Lindbergh's poem tells Johnny Appleseed's story through the perspective of one woman who observed his odd career over the course of her lifetime. "She saw him first", so the poem goes, when she was just a little girl and he visited her familie's frontier cabin in the woods. All her life, as she grew and with her the country, turning from rough frontier into settled lands, she heard the tales of Johnny's journeys as civilization's ambassador as he spread his gift of apple trees. "She saw him last" as well, when as an old woman she welcomed the aged Johnny at her neat little farm house surounded by apple trees. And she kept alive his legend when he was gone, by telling his stories to her grandchildren every year at apple harvest time.
Kathy Jakobsen's wonderful folk art illustrations are the perfect fit for this tale. Her pictures are simple, almost child-like; bursting with vivid color and full of creative energy. There is a full page illustration across from each page of text, which in turn is boardered with illustrations of scenes from Johnny's story. In addition, there are two double paged illustrations; one showing settlers moving into the wild frontier, and the other showing that same land as tamed and settled country, full of apple trees. Jakobsen's brilliant folk art illustrations are what sets this book appart as something truly special, and are the reason that I bought the book.
The final page of the book gives a brief history of John Chapman - the man behind the legend of Johnny Appleseed, nicely ballancing history and legend.
If you have cherished this gentle legend and wish to introduce it to your children, this book perfectly fills the bill.

Great poem; American heritage at its best.......2002-07-29
My kids and I loved this poem, which we checked out of the library, with an accompanying tape. It so eloquently preserved not only the historical contribution that John Chapman made to our country but also his devotion to God--a part of our country's heritage that is too often forgotten today. The art in this book is simple but rich in detail. We loved it so much that we decided to buy a copy for ourselves!

Learn About Johnny & Practice Reading with "Johnny Applesee: My Story".......2006-02-03
This book is a Level 2 Reader which is defined as being for Grades 1 to 3. And despite being a reader it does as fine a job as any book we have read thus far in teaching young children about Johnny Appleseed (John Chapman).
The book begins with Johnny's arrival on a farm. Everyone is excited to see John again and they invite him to dinner. The two children, Will and Beth, want John to tell them one of this stories, and he says sure but not before he helps dad with the wood splitting.
When they do all settle down after dinner, Johnny tells of his own boisterous childhood family. How he found relief from the noise of ten siblings! in the woods and how the woods became like a second home to him.
The story goes on to describe how he set off from Massachusetts to go west, and how he fell into apple planting by accident when a cider mill gave him free apple seeds. The book covers the harsh winters in Pennsylvania and how John planted seeds there and in Indiana and Ohio too.
Five Stars. Very Good read-aloud. The book gives some history and explanation of how and why Johnny ended up traveling the wilderness. In addition, it points out in a fun, non condemning way that many of the stories told about John are more myth than truth.
Text is included below so you can judge reading levels for yourself.
"I sold sprouts to folks
heading west in their wagons.
I sold sprouts to settlers living in log cabins.
One sprout cost
six and a half cents.
"Sometimes I traded sprouts
for clothes or food.
Some folks were too poor
to trade.
I game them sprouts for free.
I knew how it felt
To be poor.

My first grade class enjoyed it very much.

A Nice Little Reader -- a review of Demuth's "Johnny Appleseed".......2005-12-27
This story about John Chapman/Johnny Appleseed by Patricia Demuth is a Level 1 reader. This means that it is intended for children Preschool to First Grade. Level 1 books have "very few lines per page, very large type, easy words, lots of repetition, and pictures with visual "cues" to help children figure out the words on the page."
In my opinion, this description seems fairly accurate. My only hesitations are that there do seem to be a lot of words per page and that I'm not sure on what level First Graders really are at. [My daughter is only 5 y.o.]
An example (the first page of the book) follows for your perusal so you can determine appropriateness for yourself:
Who was Johnny Appleseed?
Was he just in stories?
No.
Johnny was a real person.
His name was John Chapman.
He planted apple trees --
lots and lots of them.
so people called him
Johnny Appleseed.
From there Demuth goes on to tell about how when Johnny was young that the United States was young too. How when people moved out west that there as nothing to greet them or help them. There were no towns or grocery stores, schools or even fruit trees. So when John went west he took lots of apple seeds so he could make the land more friendly to the settlers.
The book touches on the `facts' (myths?) that John was befriended by not only American Indians but wildlife. That he wore his cooking pot for a hat because it was easier to carry it that way than to carry it on his back. The book shows him as the humble figure he was, threadbare and gentle. It also shows John's resilience and how he adapted to the weather and how he insisted on living outdoors despite offers from friends to stay with them.
All in all this is a nice little book that covers many of the aspects of John's life in terms children understand (mine are boy and girl; 3 and 5). The pictures include ones of covered wagons moving west, and log cabins.
Four Stars. Good book that tells of many of the stories of John Chapman's life in terms children can understand. It is also a reader for more experienced readers.
Most difficult words include: Chapman, young, country, cooking, snowshoes, someday, afraid.
have seeds, will travel.......2000-10-04
THE LIFE OF JOHNNY APPLESEED IN A seed SHELL. WHY DID HE WEAR A POT FOR A HAT? DID HE EAT ALL THOSE APPLES TO GET ALL THOSE SEEDS? WANT TO STUDY ABOUT WESTWARD EXPANSION? WHY AM I ASKING QUESTIONS WHEN I CAN READ THIS AGAIN ?
