Book Description
The main goal of ASKING ABOUT CELLS is to evoke from students a desire to learn more about cell biology, which stems from gaining an understanding of the processes by which researchers discover the connections between cells and the rest of biology. By breaking down the typically encyclopedic walls of molecular and cellular detail, this text concentrates on presenting material through the energy of inquiry, revealing to students the questioning nature of cell biology. This exciting new cell biology text is designed for a one-semester, introductory course for instructors who wish to emphasize basic concepts and principles. This text portrays and emphasizes how the ongoing process of scientific inquiry has led to our knowledge of how cells operate. In this new text, cell biology is portrayed as a dynamic blend of curiosity and observation that has led to new questions and to a continuing quest to understand fundamental life processes.

Book helps engineers looking at an introduction to Biology.......2002-11-28
I was an engineer and interested in learning about Biology. I went to a bookstore and browsed for 4 hours looking for a book that I could comprehend. Only two books fitted the bill - the first one is "Asking about Cells" by a Harvard Professor and the second one is "An Introduction to Genetic Analysis" by Griffith, published by whfreeman. I purchased both the books and I find that they are both good. It helps to read the "Asking about Cells" to put more detailed cellular functions in Griffith's book in perspective. Also, check out the "DNA from the Beginning" tutorial published free online by Cold Spring Harbor Labs. It also gives a glimpse of what is in store.
The main purpose of the book is to remove any phobia one might have towards biology. It neatly explains that Biologists do not know everything about cells (a common misconception of non-biologists). It also shows how they know as much as they know today. Finally, it has passionate interviews from the researchers who say why they continue to do biology daily.
The material is basic enough to be followed, at the same time, informative enough to go to the next level - understanding how genes work. I myself have now become a researcher in biology, thanks to this book. If you have never done biology ever in your life, this book is for you.

True to Frommer's style, you feel as though you are almost there. Also included are excellent safety tips, the roads (islands) less traveled, best ways to carry (or rather not carry) money, weblinks, passport information, political concerns and so much more. Great maps, an invaluable aid.

I am going to Skiathos this summer and I find this book very helpful in making my plans.
Excellent.......2007-02-14
This book gives a regular person the ability to plan a wonderful trip to Greece. Frommer's shows you how to design a vacation that is exactly how you want it to be!
Helpful but a tad boring.......2006-07-26
Don't get me wrong, I read all about the places I wanted to go and noted all the things I wanted to see. I was disappointed to see that there was no information about Evvia, the second largest island.
The prices in the book were right on or a tad higher. I didn't try the restaurants mentioned in Santorini because they were very over priced.
Also, the book could have used more pictures and maps. There was not a map of the Athens metro unfortunately.
Frommers Greece Guide Book.......2006-07-20
This book was very helpful. It discusses topics regarding cruises which I thought was very helpful.

Praise for THE 25% CASH MACHINE
I've been using great income-investing ideas from Bryan Perry for a long rime, always with exceptional results. Whether you run hundreds of millions of dollars or a few thousand dollars of your own, I guarantee you'll find new ideas you can use in The 25% Cash Machine."
— Dan Frishberg, CEO, BizRadio Network
"Bryan Perry's book is a must-read for anyone that invests their own money and knows the value of a dollar. The 25% Cash Machine isn't alchemy; it is sound financial advice from someone that doesn't just talk the talk; Bryan walks the walk. he breaks down in pain English how to achieve 25% returns by running with the sectors that are outperforming the market. By dynamically moving into the sectors that have the most favorable business conditions rather than sticking with dead sectors or dead stocks, Bryan shows how and why his proven system can work for any investor, in any environment. I heartily endorse the 25% Cash Machine."

"Our national radio audience always reacts strongly and positively when Bryan Perry is a guest on our programs. They want high-yield strategies, and Bryan has knowledge, experience, and integrity to generate a 25ash machine. You derserve better than 2%.......2007-09-08
Income generating securities can and do pay 10%. How? By returning the lions share to the unit holders. What a unique concept.. Read on.
Investing For Dividend Payout.......2007-05-13
Wow! This book is amazing. I had no idea there were actually companies that paid very nice dividends. By that, I mean dividends capable of generating a nice cash flow. That's what the title means, generating a 25% return in the form of dividends. I've taken the book to heart and invested in some of the companies that do this. Trust me, a few hundred dollars in dividends is much better than the palty couple of bucks per share that even blue chip companies pay. Great book and easy to understand. Highly recommended for anyone who wants cash flow from their investments.
Useful but redundant.......2007-05-12
Brian has a short story that he has turned into a novel. Basically, the good is that he tells you where to look for outsized dividend paying stocks but the bad is that he doesn't back up the 25% assertions with any recent performance statistics. I could probably have found the same information (stocks) with a good stock screener. However, if I subscribe to his investing service, he will tell me which ones to buy (as basket of 25 stocks is a lot), when to buy them and when to sell them (their sector goes out of favor).
But, on the other hand (if I had some performance information), even if he gained only 15%/year and didn't lose anything on the underlying stock price, it would still beat Wall Street.
I would wait until the book goes on sale to buy it or buy it used.
Beware: Book not up front enough about risk.......2007-04-11
The risk involved is severely downplayed.
If you want a 3% return on your investments, the risk is almost zero with a CD or money market account.
If you want a 7% return on your investment, you can go low risk with bonds and fixed income vehicles, but you usually have to take on some stocks, which always carries risk. But the downside is also fairly minimal. At least you can mirror the returns of the market indices.
If you want a 12% return, the risks increase. You could lose 12% as easily as gain 12%.
If you shoot for a 25% return as your goal, you are in grave danger of losing much more than 25% if you guess wrong. You have to take chances with dubious practices such as lack of diversification, leveraging your assets and trying to time the market. High risk stuff indeed.
Read this book and practice its teachings at your own risk.
Thin Book with Thin Ideas and No Attention to Risk.......2007-03-26
In The 25% Cash Machine, Bryan Perry of Changewave Investing, focuses on investing high yield equities. It's not 25% annual yield, mind you. The investments he recommends yield about 10% per year and he says you can then also get 15% annual capital appreciation for those investments.
The primary investments he recommends are: business development companies (BDCs), Canadian business trusts, Canadian energy trusts, closed-end funds, convertible securities, master limited partnerships (mostly pipelines), oil/shipping/tanker stocks and real estate investment trusts (REITs).
Only in passing does he mention (just a couple of sentences really) the high risk in high yield investments. Any equity which can appreciate 15% in one year can also lose 25% of its value quite quickly - as the Canadian energy trusts did recently. Never does he consider the main goal of most income investors - preservation of capital. Never does he present evidence (backtesting, anyone) of the validity of his claim to 15% annual long-term capital appreciation from the equities he recommends.
The style of the book is unrelentingly promotional. The book reads more like an e-mail promotion for Changewave Investing than a legitimate attempt to educate investors. In fact, the book mentions his Changewave advisory service innumerable times.
Finally, the book contains more typographical errors than any book I've read in the past five years. Shame on the publisher John Wiley & Sons.
Bottom line: It's a thin book, thin on ideas, with substantial hype and little regard for risk, written more to promote Changewave advisory services than to educate the reader.

The book was in great shape, except for the lower right hand corner of the front cover. I think this bend in the book cover is mostly due to the packaging, or lack there of. The big text book was just placed in a cardboard box without any filler or wrapping of any type. Of course, I can still read the book and use it for class, so I am pleasantly pleased.

Not only was the book a great price, but I received the book w/in days of my initial online purchase! I am really happy that I purchased this particular book from it's original owner. I was worried that the book would not reach me in time for the first day of classes. I actually received it the "weekend" before classes started! Thanks for the great experience!

I miss the one-volumn edition, but everyone will love the bonus material that has been added in this 2 vol boxset! IT HAS EVERYTHING a student will ever need and more than most professors can use. For 99.98% of the population: this book is MORE than complete...I think you would ahve to go to the Folios or Quatros directly to get a more book with more authority.

When quiltmaker Ozella McDaniels told Jacqueline Tobin of the Underground Railroad Quilt Code, it sparked Tobin to place the tale within the history of the Underground Railroad. Hidden in Plain View documents Tobin and Raymond Dobard's journey of discovery, linking Ozella's stories to other forms of hidden communication from history books, codes, and songs. Each quilt, which could be laid out to air without arousing suspicion, gave slaves directions for their escape. Ozella tells Tobin how quilt patterns like the wagon wheel, log cabin, and shoofly signaled slaves how and when to prepare for their journey. Stitching and knots created maps, showing slaves the way to safety.
The authors construct history around Ozella's story, finding evidence in cultural artifacts like slave narratives, folk songs, spirituals, documented slave codes, and children's' stories. Tobin and Dobard write that "from the time of slavery until today, secrecy was one way the black community could protect itself. If the white man didn't know what was going on, he couldn't seek reprisals." Hidden in Plain View is a multilayered and unique piece of scholarship, oral history, and cultural exploration that reveals slaves as deliberate agents in their own quest for freedom even as it shows that history can sometimes be found where you least expect it. --Amy Wan
Book Description
The fascinating story of a friendship, a lost tradition, and an incredible discovery, revealing how enslaved men and women made encoded quilts and then used them to navigate their escape on the Underground Railroad.
"A groundbreaking work."--Emerge
In
Hidden in Plain View, historian Jacqueline Tobin and scholar Raymond Dobard offer the first proof that certain quilt patterns, including a prominent one called the Charleston Code, were, in fact, essential tools for escape along the Underground Railroad. In 1993, historian Jacqueline Tobin met African American quilter Ozella Williams amid piles of beautiful handmade quilts in the Old Market Building of Charleston, South Carolina. With the admonition to "write this down," Williams began to describe how slaves made coded quilts and used them to navigate their escape on the Underground Railroad. But just as quickly as she started, Williams stopped, informing Tobin that she would learn the rest when she was "ready." During the three years it took for Williams's narrative to unfold--and as the friendship and trust between the two women grew--Tobin enlisted Raymond Dobard, Ph.D., an art history professor and well-known African American quilter, to help unravel the mystery.
Part adventure and part history,
Hidden in Plain View traces the origin of the Charleston Code from Africa to the Carolinas, from the low-country island Gullah peoples to free blacks living in the cities of the North, and shows how three people from completely different backgrounds pieced together one amazing American story.

Myth, legend or history?.......2007-05-27
I have read pros and cons on the authenticity of this book and remain convinced it is a novel lacking authentic historical documentation. Some of the quilt patterns mentioned did not exist prior to 1900 and the story tellers are unavailable or deceased. Although several respected quilt historians believe the author's tales, I choose to accept Barbara Brackman's statement in her book "Facts and Fabrications...Unraveling the History of Quilts and Slavery." Ms. Brackman wrote on page 7 of her book "We have no historical evidence that quilts were used as signal, codes or maps. The tale of quilts and the Underground Railroad makes a good story, but not good quilt history." The book is a slow read and repetitive.
Not a shred of evidence!.......2007-03-22
Having personally had the privilege to study with three of the Underground Railroad's top historians: David Blight, James Horton, and Lois Horton; All three said that there is not a shred of evidence supporting the idea that quilts served as maps. Quilts were however sewn and sold as fundraisers for abolitionist groups.
Fakelore - absolutely no evidence to back up this story.......2007-03-12
Just do a search on the internet for underground railroad quilts and you will find many web sites that debunk the myths set forth in this book. Although the concept is appealing, there is absolutely no evidence other than one woman's story to back it up. Almost all underground railroad historians and quilt historians label this book as FICTION, not fact! There is so much factual material to learn about the Underground Railroad - it is an insult to the history of black Americans to perpetuate a myth.
Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad.......2007-02-19
Very interesting book, not quite what I had expected. The book traces the story line of a particular person, along with the different perspectives of educators and their arguments of the authenticity of the patterns and their meanings.
I would recommend the book to anyone who enjoys quilting, along with an interest in American History and the importance of the Underground Railroad post Civil War.
Wonderful Reading ! Highly Recommended !.......2006-09-08
I learned about this book through the drama department at my church. We are putting on a play based on the story of the quilt code presented here. I was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina. I have visited this booth many times. As an African American and a descendent of survivors of slavery, I understand the concept of an unwritten oral history. So much of my family history that has been handed done orally by the elders in my family would probably be unbelievable also. But that does not mean that it did not occur. The Timeline, Glossary, and Bibliography are excellent tools. This book has helped the cast to start discussions and learn more about this era in United States history.

Frommer's has done it again!.......2007-09-15
Frommer's Greek Islands is just what I was looking for! The section I found most helpful was the appendix in the back of the book that gives info on Greece in depth which briefly lists the Gods & Goddesses, language, useful words & phrases, as well as some menu terms. Even though the book is very light weight I plan on cutting out that section out of the book and keeping it in my pocket for shore excursions on the Islands. I have used Frommer's books in the past with the most recent being Rome. I live in New York and keep a copy of Frommer's New York for foreign travelers who visit me and want to head out on their own. I also found alot of info. in Eyewitness Travel Guides "The Greek Islands" it has glossy color photos, and is a good guide but way too heavy to pack let alone carry on a tour!
Good info but repeats Frommer's Greece.......2007-03-23
I thought this book would give me additional info about the Greek Islands but it only repeated what was in the Frommer's Greece book, with a few extra inconsequential chapters. You really only need one or the other.
An excellent guide to "just" the islands!.......2005-08-13
The principal difference between this book and "Frommer's Greece" is that this one covers the option of selecting a cruise of the islands, and that section is very good. So, if a major concern is choosing a cruise line (or ship) for your Greek vacation, take a look at this guide. Otherwise, "Frommer's Greece" covers all the mainland (and all the islands) for the same price. Frommer's stands out for clear writing, logical indexing, and especially for running the gamut from budget tourism to the more affluent. His starred system with comments for value or attractiveness to family is understandable with good common sense. Studying Frommer's helps me make the decisions I personally want to make. It will save you many times the price of the book and make your stay much more enjoyable.

Leaves much to be desired.......2005-02-16
Unfortunately this book lacks much of the detail and thoroughness that some other guides to the Greek Islands offer (such as the Eyewitness travel guide). Although the major islands are covered in some detail, this book almost entirely ignores a lot of other islands, even some that are quite large. This is a real disappointment because the true wonder of the Greek Island experience is that you can travel to all kinds of places, some very small but no less significant. A good travel guide for the Greek Islands therefore needs to include just as much detail about these less-visited islands as it does about the more well-traveled ones. This book also lacks a lot of the photograps that other books include, which I think is important because the Greek Islands are so diverse. It really does help to see pictures of the islands to help you decide which ones to visit. If you're planning a trip to the Greek Islands you can do much better than this book for a travel guide.
Great reference.......2000-05-20
I went traveling in Greece 2 years ago and found other travel books to lack info on the Greek Islands and had to struggle my way through the islands. As I am planning to return this summer, I have found this book to be a good reference to prepare, and one that I will bring with me. When most of us think of Greece, the Greek Isles are the place most of us invision. This book gave me a good reference as to where to go, where to stay and what there was to do. I would reccommend this book to others.

CLR via C#, Second Edition (Pro Developer)
ASIN: 1861008295 |
Book Description
This book addresses the fundamental units of Windows and .NET programming - threads. A strong understanding of the role threads play in program execution, how multiple threads can interact in order to make efficient programs, and the pitfalls to beware of when developing multithreaded applications, are all core to a developer's ability to develop effective C# programs. This book will cover how .NET applications are executed, the life cycle of a thread in .NET, how the .NET Framework uses threads, how threads work in an event-driven environment, how we can avoid race conditions and deadlocks, how the activity of multiple threads can be synchronized, and how to debug multithreaded applications. We finish it off by describing the creation of a multithreaded network application.
What is great about this book?
Threads are fundamental to the way GUI and server applications operate; if your code is running in a GUI, then you're already writing code in a threaded environment. An ASP.NET page also runs in a threaded environment. This book aims to cover the tricky issues of threading in .NET, and particularly to do so from the perspective of C# developers. Threading is by nature not easy to grasp, but a necessary step towards mastery of programming for the .NET platform.
Customer Reviews:
Needs to be more Application Oriented.......2006-03-20
This is a good book to get started on .NET threading. However some of the examples are syntax oriented rather than application oriented. For example, the chapter on synchronization covers all the synchronization mechanisms available in .NET but the examples appear to be rushed i.e concentrating on how to use them syntactically rather than providing concrete examples. I also found the book a little unorganized. Some of the snippets are incomplete or improperly explained. Nonetheless, this book helps in getting up to speed in a short time. It covers almost all aspects of .NET Threading. Good reference but not great. 3 stars.
unbelievable! no code for download!.......2006-03-19
I am new to .net threading and this is the book i could find which is about .net threading. Since there are not much choices, comparisons are almost unlikely.
The book is well organized but with one main problem, no source code download. Actually i don't mind there isn't a code for download, because i prefer to type myself. but the author had to make sure all the codes are within the book and all workable.
When i read until chapter 2. I found some difficulty.
There is a topic about "Life cycle of Thread". when i gone thru the "Interrupting a Thread" it prompt me error. Then i skip this part and go to "Pausing and Resuming Threads". no error but the pause button doesn't work. the thread still continue running even i press the pause button. till i put a break point in the pause button. A little dissapointed hope the author can rectify it immediately
Good book to learn about multi-threading and related issues.......2005-07-29
Some of the most complex problems in commercial programming arise when you use multiple threads in your application. This book deals with the various ways in which you could spawn new threads and create a more responsive application. However, like every experienced programmer knows, that is the easy part. The real difficulty is in making your code thread-safe. This is also known as thread synchronization. This book has excellent coverage of those aspects too.
It, however, assumes that you are familiar with C# and does indeed jump directly to the topic of the book. If you need help with C#, definitely look somewhere else (C# and the .NET platform, 2nd Edition by Andrew Troelsen is a fantastic book for that purpose). I also felt that the book skimps on some of the more detailed areas of .NET multithreading such as Thread Pools and some specialized classes such as AutoResetEvent, ManualResetEvent, etc. However, this in no way reduces the usefulness of this book.
I found it to be a great primer to learning more about these topics, which paved a path for further investigations using MSDN or other web resources.
Whether it is for your day-to-day job, or for an interview, if you are looking for a book that covers .NET threading in detail, you are likely to be satisfied with this book.
Give at a miss.......2004-08-28
I've sat and read the book till chapter 3 and it's so academic it smacks of not being able to think in real programming scenarios. It really doesn't find a way to be jovial and sounds so disinterested in the topic. I've read so many books that do better than this. And, I love reading these type of books but oh god these guys are sooo dry I had take breaks just to sleep :) But... since I have the only book on 'c#' threading to date... I'll keep going... I am really pleased I read the book on books24x7 before I purchased!...

Groundbreaking video ethnography.......2003-02-08
Tobin's book has been around for a number of years now. Nevertheless, it continues to set the standard in the creation of video ethnography. Graduate students across the nation use this book for its brilliant methodology and for his insightful readings of culture.
Idiosyncratic and utterly fascinating.......2001-04-04
Tobin et al compare preschools in Japan, the US and China in a fascinating cross-cultural study. What makes this study so compelling is that you hear not only the authors' interpretations of what they see, but also the opinions of the teachers, administrators and the parents OF ALL THREE CULTURES. By having parents, teachers and administrators watch video tapes of the preschools in the non-native country, you get an eye-opening assesment of what each preschool is trying to do in its culture and how it compares with what other preschools accomplish. I have my daughter enrolled in a Japanese preschool, and the opnions and analysis on what Japanese preschools are like is dead-on, as is the analysis of the American preschool.
The real eye-opener for those readers not familiar with preschools in Japan is how chaotic, loosely-structured, and easy-going they are. The 30-1 child-teacher ratio makes chaos inevitable, but it forces the kids to learn how to deal with each other, rather than an authority figure. Contrasted to the American pre-school style, where the teacher runs the show, enforces the rules and molds the kids to act in a manner that the teacher/school has decided is appropriate, Japanese kids actually get more practice resolving conflicts and taking responsibility for problem-solving.
This is actually one study that is fun to read, too! Highly recommended.
Book Description
Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel's innovative fashion ideas-jersey knit fabrics, easy-to-wear garments based on men's sportswear, showy costume jewelry, and the little black dress-challenged the world of fashion head on. This lavishly illustrated book focuses on Chanel the couturiere and her immense influence on the way women choose to look in the modern world. Using previously unpublished material, the fashion icon is examined in depth-her career, her style, her workroom, her customers, and her rivals.
Chanel's revolutionary style is examined in vivid detail, from her emergence in the early twentieth century through her glorious "comeback period" of the fifties and sixites to her legacy as the inspiration behind the exciting contemporary creations of the House of Chanel. As exciting as a front row seat at a couture show, Chanel: The Couturiere at Work is a compelling look at the empire of one of the indisputable geniuses of twentieth-century fashion.
Customer Reviews:
Thin book with glossy photos.......2007-04-08
The writing is not very good - more like a stream of advertorials. There is overwhelming praise of Chanel's work - flattery more like it - without any criticism or analysis. However the pictures are good if you are collecting photos of Chanel's clothing designs over time. "Chanel and Her World" is a better book - it was put together with more thought. "Chanel: The Couturiere At Work" is just a thin book - more like a magazine, with insubstantial prose. Get it used.
A 'must' for any serious fashion collection.......2006-11-06
Chanel: The Couturiere At Work is a lovely survey of fashion icon Coco Chanel and her innovative fashion ideas, and belongs in any collection boasting a focus on fashion. Her style is examined in depth; from her first early creations in the early 20th century through her design changes over the decades and her creations through the House of Chanel. Loaded with black and white and color examples from all the periods, Chanel The Couturiere At Work is a 'must' for any serious fashion collection.
"Coco" and why she mattered ..........2004-12-28
Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel is adequately profiled in this book; from her very humble beginnings to her rise and fall -- and rise again -- this is an insightful biography of the woman and her work, which were for all intents and purposes inseparable. The authors capture not just the drive and determination which propelled Coco to the heights, but shrewdly illustrate how startlingly ahead of her time the designer was, and how much her work and ideas permeate fashion, even to the present day. Don't let the absurdities and excess of so much Chanel on the runway today fool you -- this woman was a visionary in her time, and the quintessence of her designs was paradoxically American; sporty, practical, possessed of a spare elegance, though she was in every way a Frenchwoman through and through. The early drawings of her first dresses are included here and are fascinating. Precious few exist, because -- as they book tells -- Coco Chanel preferred to design on the body, using live models. She was a perfectionist par excellence who introduced trends that transcended their time, and this modest book is a worthy addition to your library if you have any interest at all in the foundations of twentieth century fashion. There are many books on Chanel; I haven't read them all, so this isn't a comparative review, just the opinions of a fan of the couturiere as artist.
