The best interest of your child.......2003-09-15
A must read for all divorced/separated parents who really care about their children. While non-custodial parents may not like what this book has to say (especially in cases involving infants and young children), it definitely takes into consideration the needs of THE CHILD rather than the non-custodial parent and gives parents a good insight of what the child is going through. In an unfortunately judicial climate where judges simply want to take the easy way out to please the parents by cutting the children in half, this book warns of the potential damage this can cause your child. It also provides common sense methods for non-custodial parents to be involved in their children's lives until they do have more extensive visitation, which is encouraged as the children get older.
Understanding the CHILD'S needs.......2001-07-14
This book is an excellent guide to understanding what is best for your child and why. The author's recommendations stem from widely recognized theories of psychological development. It may seem unfair at times to the non-custodial parent. However, a part of being a good parent is doing what is best for your child even if that means putting your own needs aside. I think this book offers excellent guidance for parents trying to develop a healthy co-parenting plan that works and is age appropriate.
Bad Information.......2001-03-15
This book is very outdated to start things off. This shows no studies done on children who are actually involved with equal shared parenting. This book tells how the children should not spend the night at the onon-custodial parents house when at a young age. A child can sleep at a daycare or at school, but can't go spend the night at dad's house. How else can a child get the benefit of having both parents share in the raising of that child. The non-custodial parent would never get to help the child get ready for bed, wake them up in the morning, take them to school, make them dinner, and the list would go on forever. This book is great information for people who want their children to have one parent and to have major problems later in life
Very aggravating if you are trying to save your baby........2000-05-02
Good book if you are a bad female custodial parent involved in a custody dispute over a baby. Gives lots of reasons for not allowing the non-custodial to be involved as more than just a visitor. If you are a non-custodial, it shows you the kind of shallow thinking that Child psychologists were using only 10 years ago and explains many of the prejudices you run up against when it comes to taking care of babies. One example is they suggest that the "primary parent" or custody should be given to the one that spends the most amount of time caring for the child. They neglect to mention that in many cases this would be the day care provider or that it is possible that the time the "primary parent" gives her baby is only what she has to do to keep the baby alive while the limited time the non-custodial parent gives is because he wants to be with the child and knows that the child desperately need him. The information offered in the book gets more in sync with modern thinking as the age of the child increases.
Excellent.......1999-04-09
This slim volume was enormously helpful in understanding how to best meet the needs of children in different age groups after divorce.
My husband and I were painfully aware that his kids were still having a lot of trouble adjusting to his divorce, particularly the visitation schedule. This book helped us understand what revisions needed to be made to the schedule. We easily recognized his children in the descriptions of how kids at different developmental stages respond to their parents' divorces, and the author's lists of what the kids' developmental tasks are at each stage and what likely trouble areas are helped us to assess how the kids were coping.
We easily identified that the seven-year-old could be helped significantly by involving him in sports to develop important relationships with his peers and that we could probably divide the amount of time the nine-year-old spent with each parent more equally without causing her anxiety or leaving her confused about her schedule.
Kids have very different reactions to divorce, and this book is perfect for helping parents identify what they can do to help each of their individual children. An excellent resource for divorced parents who really want to help their kids.

A burned-out minister in small town Antioch, Washington, must wrestle with his confusion and cynicism when a self-proclaimed messiah takes over his ministry. The replacement minister looks like Christ. He even heals the sick and performs miracles. Could this messenger of hope and renewal be the real thing?
At first, this small town is abuzz with reports of miracles and religious sightings (a weeping statue of Christ, a disappearing hitchhiker warning of Christ's arrival, a soothing angel). But suddenly there's a twist of evil and demonic mystery in the air. It's up to the jaded minister Travis to track down the real story behind this visitor and somehow find a way to stop him.
Frank Peretti has been a hit sensation in the Christian thriller market but admits that up until now his books have surfed in the shallow waters of pop fiction. In The Visitation, Peretti has worked his craft more carefully--exploring how suffering leads to disillusionment in God as well as deepening his characterization. (The main character is a thinly disguised reflection of Peretti's own bout with doubt.) Fans will be relieved to know that Peretti is still dedicated to suspenseful drama, and there's still plenty of spine-chilling mayhem when all hell literally breaks loose on this small-town cast of characters.
Book Description
The sleepy, eastern Washington wheat town of Antioch has suddenly become a gateway for the supernatural--from sightings of angels and messianic images to a weeping crucifix. Then a self-proclaimed prophet mysteriously appears with an astounding message.
The national media and the curious all flock to the little town--a great boon for local business but not for Travis Jordan. The burned-out former pastor has been trying to hide his past in Antioch. Now the whole world is headed to his backyard to find the Messiah, and in the process, every spiritual assumption he has ever held will be challenged. The startling secret behind this visitation ultimately pushes one man into a supernatural confrontation that will forever alter the lives of everyone involved.

Worth the read.......2007-03-20
I'm an avid reader, however, THE VISITATION is my first book by author Frank Peretti. I found the book to be intriguing and thought provoking. Travis Jordan's character was very well developed. Definitely worth the read. I'm already moving on to other Frank Peretti books....
Stephen King Lite.......2007-03-12
Author Frank Peretti opens up with a great premise---What if Jesus came back and appeared in a small town in Oregon?
Unfortuantely, he abandons that promise shortly after the 100-pages mark, and the Sadduces in the local town church council become two dimensional charicatures as Peretti labours to present a Christianly acceptable horror story. How the church would react to an actual Second Coming is a fascinating topic, alas, *The Visitation* choses to go down the false prophet path, and the result is a pale imitation of King's *Needful Things.*
Amazing story; well written Jeremy Johnson.......2007-02-21
The book takes place in the small town of Antioch where everything is going fine. When a wooden cross at the local church begins to weep tears that heal the sick. Everyone begins to see signs Jesus around them. Then a man shows up from Montana to work on a ranch when he starts performing miracles of healing and prophecy. Half the town beleives he is evil and is a demon while the other half believe that he is Jesus. Travis Jordan the ex-pastor of the church calms the new pastor from doing anything rash. However soon the media hears about the amazing healer and comes running. However Brandon Nichols (the mystery man) won't allow himself on cameras. Pretty soon everyone starts to really wonder about who he is? why he's here? what he's hiding? and how he got his power? In order to find out what happens you have to read the book which I strongly recommend.
This was my first Peretti book.......2007-01-10
And it will be my last. It was given to me by a friend whose intentions were good, but I think backfired. The author clearly knows ministers (of the Penecostal type), is very familiar with religion, Christianity, the idioms, lingo and even speach patterns of those in a 'believers' world.
The author also has a low view of the 'non' penecostal type faiths, as portrayed in the book. Seems like the only one willing to go out and fight was the guy who saw demons. OK. As someone who doesn't believe in demons, I found it a bit, erm, frustrating. Because in my life, and world, it was the opposite.
Mostly, the author clearly has no concept of abuse, the long effects, how human personalities are changed and altered due to physical pain and neglect, what an abused child does to survive the horror & most of all, the emotions and beliefs that are absent in such an individual. He needs to visit a foster home....talk to folks dealing with kids with RAD, or showing signs of early sociopathy. Understand what has gone wrong in such folks.
And it ain't demons.
Demons my butt. Deal with someone whose not able to trust, who can't feel love or compassion and knows that they were screwed over from birth. That would have made a world of difference though maybe made writing a 'happy ending' for the book dang near impossible. Because never in the history of humanity has such a person been totally 'fixed' Ahhhh, now I get it! Easier to write about demons that to admit that like growing back lost limbs, God can't create missing empathy or emotions.
As you can tell, the demonic aspect of the book was a major put off for me.... because it boomeranged the authors intent. Instead of making it look like God was the most 'powerful' and in charge, the story came off more like "if you get trampled by buffalo, God won't be there to turn the herd, but when it's all over, he'll pat you on the head and hand you bandaid---- an itty bitty one at that. Oh, and he'll sing you a song'.
Thanks, but erm, it wouldn't been nice if some of the buffalo had broken a few legs first. A few gopher holes woulda been nice! Next time, I'll avoid both God AND the buffalo.
Also, all it takes is a minor bump in the road to turn you away from faith (loss of spouse) with God being silent, but heck, all you have to do when in agony and terror is call on Satan and he's there with bells on.
OK, so just from a pragmatic, I don't wanna die and the pain is getting me down point of view, it doesn't make God look like much of nuthin. Instead, I found myself thinking "gee, never dawned on me to call for Satan....or God either....I just wanted OUT!"
So, by the end of the book, I really disliked the Minister, felt a bit of empathy for the villian (been there, done that, got the tee shirt) and most of all, felt tremendously annoyed at a glib and ignorant treatment of abused children who've grown into adults. That's not the real world. That's not where I live. No amount of prayer, bibles or church services will ever fix that.
IF the author had left simply left out the 'war of heaven and hell' stuff and simply dealt with the people as people, with faith as faith and most of all, what hope is there, if any for the adult survivor of abuse in a religious setting.....it would have made a great read. And probably helped a few 'abused kids grown up' feel that God is on their side. What you get is.... "Oh, it's the demons!?! Granny was right!"
Excellent Story, Gripping and Fast-Paced.......2006-06-05
Welcome to Antioch, Washington, a small town over an hour from Spokane. Travis Jordan is the burnt-out ex-pastor/narrator of the story and what a storyteller he is. Either Peretti was a burned out, disillusioned Christian, or he has excellent powers of observation. He nails disappointment and disillusionment with God, cynicism forged by unanswered prayer and constant disappointment honed by too many years of working with the body of Christ.
Everything is going along as always in Antioch when the large wooden crucifix at the local Catholic Church begins to weep tears that heal the sick. Not long afterward, people begin seeing Jesus' face in the clouds and in tree bark along with a few other spiritual miracles.
When Brandon Nichols shows up, ostensibly from Missoula, Montana to work as a ranch hand for the rich widow Mrs. Macon, he starts performing miracles of healing and prophecy. The town is split on who and what he is. Unbelievers and even some of the "elect" believe he's the Christ, but the other half of the town thinks he's a demon deceiver. Young, new pastor Kyle Sherman is beside himself with righteous indignation, wanting to "take this town for Jesus" and expel this demon interloper. But Travis Jordan has "been there and done that" and he steadies Kyle's actions. Learning the where and what of Travis's "been there and done that" is interwoven skillfully into the tale. Soon, the public gets word of Brandon's miracles and the media come running, along with folks from all over the country, everybody wanting a special healing or simply to see and experience this new messiah. But why won't Brandon allow cameras, even when he goes public with his ministry and sets up shop? What's he hiding? Who is he and where did he come from? And where did he get his "power"?
Peretti has paced this story very well; even though we know up front (if you've read Peretti before) that Good will prevail over evil in the end, the hook is seeing how Good prevails. The author does an excellent job building suspense and holding all the reins under control, rationing out revelations slowly to keep the suspense and the mystery going right up to end of the book.
The Visitation probably contains a lot from Peretti's real life. Travis Jordan's life has been a panorama of colorful and realistic church experiences and church folk. If you were ever a believer in a small town or even a member of a very large church, you're likely to read in amazement as Travis relates his own story, because you're likely to see your story there, too.
The Visitation was a story I couldn't wait to get back to--I read at lunchtime at work and in the evenings after work. It's been a long time since I was that excited about a novel. Fortunately, Peretti has other novels so the fun doesn't have to end yet. I hope you'll find The Visitation as exciting and captivating as I did. I highly recommend it. I learned from Peretti's website that there's also a movie made from the book, and I immediately put it in my Netflix queue. Rumor has it the movie is even better than the book.

Book Description
Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) has become an accepted form of augmenting the healing processes that occur within the walls of healthcare facilities. The same joy and comfort animals provide at home can also benefit the eager patient or resident who awaits a visit from a volunteer and their pet.
Photographer Renee Lamm Esordi accompanied volunteers and their pets on visits to hospitals, nursing homes, a school for special needs children, a psychiatric program, and a youth camp for troubled teens. Candid interviews with health practitioners, staff, and volunteers describe the challenges and rewards of AAT in their own words. She witnessed and recorded the joyous responses of patients and residents who look forward to the companionship and conversation the visits provide. She also accompanied a volunteer on another type of visit: delivering pet food and supplies on behalf of an organization whose mission is to keep those living with HIV and AIDS from having to choose between taking care of themselves or taking care of their pet.
Her documentation of these interactions illustrate the pleasure people can derive from the simple presence of animals. These photographs tell a story not only of alternative methods of healing but also of compassion, unconditional love, and comfort that these visitors can bring.
CNN.com says Esordi "captured the beauty of this unique animal-human interaction", and Animal Fair magazine assures "one need only look at these snapshots to realize that a picture taken by Esordi is worth a thousand studies...her contribution to furthering public awareness is a valuable one."

A Great Revelation.......2007-02-04
This is a fantastic book! I really appreciate Shawn Bolz's willingness to share such a personal revelation as well as his understanding of wealth. This is not a book on how God wants to make you rich. In this text, the author shares his revelation on God's plan for finance, provision and the releasing of vision and destiny to those who love Him. I had to read this book twice, it was so full of heavenly understanding. I really enjoyed hearing the revelation of provision, stewardship and justice. This book is a call to radical generosity and love, straight from God. It encouraged me and blessed me deeply. I highly recommend this book.

I had chills every second I read this book. It was an aboslute confirmation of what the Lord is telling me, what I have been doing for the past 2 years, the dreams I have had over the last 6 years and all revelations the Lord has opened my eyes to. WOW!
Thank you Shawn!

Book Description
Why are so many lives aimless and unfulfilled? Because every one of God's children continues to live in shame from the fall, when intimate companionship with the Father was broken and the glory of his presence was lost. Yet, as Jack Hayford explains, believers can regain their intended position as kingdom people. How does that happen? Through worship. In his most comprehensive and significant work to date, Hayford explores the various elements of worship and shows how to attain the liberty that comes from welcoming God's glory. Christians worldwide are heeding the call to worship. With this timely and substantive direction, each one will learn to reign once again in kingdom authority.
Customer Reviews:
Manifest Presence.......2005-08-28
Jack Hayford presents a scholarly view, yet so simply understandable. Class and cause are his gifts.
A book for serious Christians and seekers.......2005-08-24
When the biggest words on a book's jacket spell the author's name, you know he or she is either "up and coming" or a respected veteran voice, the second being the case with Jack Hayford, president of the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel --- a prominent Pentecostal denomination --- and author of some 40 books and 600 hymns and worship songs, including "Majesty."
In MANIFEST PRESENCE: Expecting a Visitation of God's Grace Through Worship, Hayford takes on the broad subject of Christian worship, both corporate and individual, his premise being that "(1) God is waiting for a human invitation to manifest Himself, and (2) worship is the means for inviting Him to do so." As we worship, God releases his power in us and through us, though "the Church at large tends to be resistant to worshiping God with the expectation of His visiting with power."
This is a book for serious Christians or seekers. Occasional anecdotes lighten the text, but it is largely substantive teaching material that requires careful reading. I suggest digesting a self-contained chapter a day rather than attempting a straight-through read. Eighteen chapters --- most hooked to a specific biblical text --- are presented under three part-sections: "The Call to Worship," "The Power of Worship," and "The Pursuit of Worship," which covers the spiritual as well as the physical postures of worship. One needs to get past the table of contents and into the text to determine which chapters relate primarily to personal worship and which to church worship, some chapters being addressed to pastors and worship leaders.
One recurring theme is that "worship confronts carnal pride" and moves us beyond what "others might think" of our robust but imperfect singing, our raised hands, our bent knees.
A second topic, covered in each of the three parts, is worship and song. In an early chapter, "Worshiping Him Who Is Worthy," Hayford wishes that more contemporary worship songs focused on Jesus, and he critically distinguishes between worship music and concert music. A particularly delightful "power of worship" chapter, titled "With Voices Loud and High," discusses the role and power of song. "When we worship God in song, the power of darkness --- in every area of our lives and in every circumstance in our world --- is challenged." Then music comes up again in the "pursuit of worship" section, where Hayford notes: "From my observation, there is usually not more than one song a year that is introduced into the life of the church that really has ongoing durability." And yet he urges a congregation "to have a prayerful and studied inflow of new songs." After all, Scripture repeats "Sing unto the Lord a new song" eight times.
Another interesting chapter discusses the spiritual power of two words that invite God's rule in our lives: grace and amen. "Amen is no ordinary word to be bandied about...Neither does it deserve to be intoned passively at the conclusion of prayers," Hayford says. " 'Amen' is the establishing of the living Word of God in the arena of human enterprise and experience for the glory of Jesus Christ."

Book Description
Children of divorce often travel between parents. How To Go To Visitation Without Throwing Up is a book for young children about coping with regular visitation to separate parents, especially long-distance visitation. Written in very simple language arising from the point of view of a young boy who had a hard time adjusting to the stress of traveling back and forth to visit his mother, How To Go To Visitation Without Throwing up offers more than just a mere advisory text - it has point-by-point observations, travel safety tips, and numerous fun activities to pass the travel time. How To Go To Visitation Without Throwing Up is highly recommended reading and a great resource for any parent having to take a child on a long distance trip to visit friends and relations. Perfect for those trips you sometimes don't want to make........2007-05-28
Kids who travel with parents often drive them crazy with questions like, "Are we there yet?" fifteen minutes after leaving on what they know is a six-hour trip. Kids whose parents are divorced or separated often face a far different problem--keeping themselves occupied when traveling alone, as this resourceful boy has, by "car, van, 18-wheeler truck, train, taxicap and airplane."
This book is filled with interesting activities to do while traveling from riddles to games. It also has some practical advice from someone who's been there about "Things that won't help", including an ever-helpful warning that "locking yourself in your room" will do no good.
As someone who didn't begin to write for publication until his forties, I highly recommend this book by someone with the good sense to begin far earlier. And I thank both Joshua and his step-mother for publishing it.

A friend in time of need.......2006-12-19
Every now and then I come across a book that, slender though it is, makes me sit up and admire the varieties of human empathy and compassion. I never actually contemplated the plight of children on long-distance trips, shuttled between one parent and the other. These kids are bored, scared, sad, and mad at their parents and at the whole world of immature and narcissistic grownups.
This book is a real friend in time of need. It contains travel tales, numerous distracting and fun activities as well as safety tips and advice on how to overcome anxiety and how to behave with your parents and others.
The book is a rarity: it is not condescending or patronizing. Allegedly written by a pre-teen, it strikes me as the best gift anyone can buy a child in this predicament. Sam Vaknin, author of "Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited".
Highly Recommended.......2006-04-29
Most books for children of divorce deal with the issues adults think children face. This book tells me that they are missing the boat. Of the many books attempting to help children deal with their situations I feel that this one is the best. A child knows what a child sees and feels. I hope Joshua writes another book and keeps us updated on his progress.
A kind and funtravel companion for a kid going on visitation.......2005-12-19
"I think visitation kids are the only people in the world who, when they are leaving 'home' they are going 'home'." (from the book)
It's good to know you're not alone. In this book, Joshua Evans shares with other kids in ways that are very friendly. It will make a great travel companion.
In this slim, yet packed, 100 page book, there are 15 or so pages of actual reading material. And those pages are reader friendly written by a kid for a kid. It's almost like a letter to the reader, very honest, personal and useful. Like when you feel sick about going on visitation, a list of things that will help you feel better. And a list of things that won't help. A list of reasons why kids don't want to go, and reasons you have to go. There are tips for parents and travel stories.
The rest of the pages are activities for the traveling kid. Some of the things are easy and fun, like the riddles pages. One activitiy is making kid buisness cards. Other activities will help a kid go a bit deeper to explore their feelings, hopes, and dreams, like the wish list and writing letters.
I encourage parents to read the "things that make me sad" list. That same list will let kids know that they are not the only ones living with divorce.
When you're helping pack your kid for travel (by car, bus, plane), slip this into his or her backpack with a love note and a hug.
A special book by a special boy.......2005-09-04
This book was written by a Joshua, a young boy who knows the stresses of visiting non-custodial parents first hand. Having faced the boredom, frustration, anxiety, sense of displacement and sense of powerlessness himself, he wrote this book to help other visiting kids out. It has everything to help a youngster get through something that he or she may barely understand, and have no power to affect.
In certain respects this book made me feel sad, but it also shows me what a special kid Joshua is. Long distance visitation, and the concomitant sense of displacement, can be so disturbing to children, but Joshua succeeded in working through it. And with his help the visiting child in your life can too. If you know a kid who has to travel between parents, then this is a book you really should buy for him or her - it's a must-have.

The dream king does it again!.......2006-07-18
I have a serious fondness for the written word, and where Neil Gaiman is concerned, it is not a fondness, it is a love. His works from Sandman to Eternals is awesome, but this particular book has held a fascination in it's difficulty to obtain in first print and the stories and poems it contains. Babycakes is one that come to mind as being truly disturbing, but that makes you think. He makes me wonder where we're headed. I would buy this book in any printing you can find, and by all means, if you run across a first print for a fair price, find me, I'm interested. :)
Neil Gaiman stretches beyond "Sandman", & quite beautifully.......2000-09-08
Unbeknownst to much of the population who read for pleasure with any regularity, Neil Gaiman is one of our greatest living writers. "Sandman" is an epic saga that blends mythology, history, religion and pop culture into a masterwork medley. "Angels and Visitations" is an equally masterful collection of stories that show what Mr. Gaiman can do when he lets his extraordinary imagination loose.
"Murder Mysteries", a nimble tale about an inchoate Heaven and the constructive angels who populate it, is by far the best of the lot. Here Gaiman does what a great mystery writer should--let the details about the characters and their surroundings emerge and become increasingly richer as the story draws to a close. The hilarious "The Case of Four And Twenty Blackbirds" is a different kind of mystery; one which turns the tale of Humpty Dumpty on its ear. "Troll-Bridge" is another modernization of a children's tale--in this case, "The Three Billy Goats Gruff"--which is written for a very different effect. It is a bittersweet story about the loss of innocence and how, as adults, we embrace the monsters that once frightened us. "Mouse" is, as another reviewer notes, an allegory that makes gentle, yet effective use of irony. "Chivalry" is an entertainingly comic tale about finding the Holy Grail. Finally, there's "Luther's Villanelle", a poem which conjures up gothic images that keep the reader's imagination going long after he or she has finished reading it.
These works have remained fresh in my mind, although I finished reading this book more than three years ago. The mere fact that so many have remained in my memory speaks much more about Gaiman's ability to write than my ability to remember. A good writer can keep you interested in what you're reading. A great one is one whose storytelling stays with you for a long time.
For that you gotta read the book...........2000-07-05
Judge this book by its cover. The cover art by Dave McKean is both whimsical and mysterious, presaging Neil Gaiman's charming works on the printed pages within. Just in case you don't know anything about Neil, here's a bit of info. Neil is best known for his award-winning comic series Sandman. Yes, he writes comic books, and he is damned good at it.
However, Neil is also damned good at the more traditional types of writing. He co-wrote the amazingly funny Good Omens with Terry Pratchett, and he also wrote the equally funny biography Don't Panic: Douglas Adams & The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy . His writing has appeared in anthologies. "Troll-Bridge" appeared in the adult fairy-tale compilation Snow White, Blood Red. "Murder Mysteries" (set in the Sandman universe, I do believe) was in the magazine and horror compilation Midnight Graffiti.
Angels and Visitations shows what else he can do. A miscellany of fiction, humour, non-fiction, poetry, and artwork, Angels and Visitations journeys from science fiction and fantasy shorts to detective stories and meticulously-researched literary works. There is a story about a worldwide shortage of animals--it reads like a cross between C. S. Lewis's "On Vivisection" and Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal." There is a postcard story about the fiendish enforced slavery of a certain well-loved mythical figure. There's a prologue to someone else's book, and an odd and timely story on venereal disease. There's a poem about a computerized hell that reads like a cross between William Gibson's Neuromancer and Kit Marlowe's Doctor Faustus. There's a disquieting allegory called "Mouse." There's a whole lot more, and it's all poignant, bitter-sweet, or rollickingly funny. It's all good. But are you going to get something out of Angels and Visitations? To quote "Prologue," "For that you gotta read the book."
Perfect........2000-05-02
What can i say, this is one of my favorite books. i usually don't like books of short stories and such, but this one is dead on.
Unforgettable stories.......1999-05-27
Some years ago I bought an anthology called Midnight Graffiti, now out of print (deservedly, unlike the book we are discussing). Although the authors were well-known, the general level of the stories was a) just average; b) bad; c) very bad; d) unspeakable, and so forth. The only story that stood out was "Murder Mysteries," by Neil Gaiman. This melancholy and powerful story stuck to my mind, and I could never forget it. So, I bought this book because it had this story in it (and so to get rid of Midnight Graffiti without qualms). This book is a treasure trove. Gaiman is a rarity, as fantasy authors go. He is satisfying in general, but he is simply superb when writing about absolutely ordinary people and their relationship with magic (mostly, their refusal to let magic into their lives), as in Chivalry, Vampire Sestina, Troll Bridge, the abovementioned Murder Mysteries and one about a veneral disease whose title has escaped me. (Just the title, I remember the story perfectly well.)
For those who did not get this great book, you can still enjoy Mr. Gaiman's unique talent in Smoke and Mirrors; it does not have the illustrations and essays, but it brings a lot of new stories. And unlike this one, it is in print.

A Bit Disappointed..........2005-07-09
After reading "Spirit Song" last week, I was quite excited to find out about this book written by the same author - in fact, I ordered it as soon as I became aware of its existence, and since it's no longer in print, I even chose to purchase a used copy (something I don't like to do too often).
I received the book today, and anxiously began reading it. However, within the first chapter, I was already beginning to feel a tinge of disappointment.
"The Visitation" is about Mary Summer Rain's visit from an archangel "of the Most High", and the info./warning that was received. It mainly focuses on the 10 commandments, and how man has distorted their meaning - not taking the time to really THINK about what they were meant to impart.
The parts I was disappointed with are:
1. Summer seems to continually look down on the people of today - as if all, or most, couldn't care less about God. I don't agree with this, as I believe that people DO care, but many think it's wrong to think for themselves, to choose their own belief systems. They've been taught from early on that to question is to sin.
2. Summer seemed to insinuate that the books written by the other "messengers" of our time are inaccurate & filled with "glitz". It sounded as if someone received a message that differed from hers, than that person was writing from their ego, and therefore, it's not truth.
My belief is that God has brought many different messages to many different people - not everyone is on the same page, so not everyone would be ready for the same message. My thought is that you'll know the truthfulness of the message by the "fruit that it bears" - so, if it's message of unconditional love &/or other positive "traits", then it's worth considering & pondering over.
3. Mary Summer Rain eludes continuously to major problems in her family life that preceeded this visit, but she never goes into any detail. I kept waiting to get an understanding of these problems, since she would bring them up in a very general manner often - but it was never to be. I would have preferred her to either not mention it at all, or just make a very general statement in the beginning & then just let it go. I can understand that she may not want to lay bare her soul to her readers - but, if that's the case, it would have been better to just not mention it at all.
Overall, I think this book does contain some important insights, but they tend to get clouded by the negative judgements that appear all too often. So, although I REALLY hate to do it, I feel that I have to give this book a "3" rating - I just wouldn't feel comfortable giving it any more or less.
Thought Provoking.......2004-10-04
As a devout catholic, some of the ideas presented in the book provoked the teachings that was thought to me in church. It is thought-provoking and does contain a detailed explanation of each of the ten commandments. Although I do not agree with all of her thoughts, I think most of them are reasonable and make sense. I recommend this book to be read since it does contain some information that is valuable to all. However, I do warn those devout catholics that this book contains some ideas that go against some of the teachings that we were taught. It is your decision whether to accept it and integrate it to your life or whether to think of it as a mere opinion of an author.
Honestly, I do not know what to think. She presents some interestign thoughts but of course, I do have some skeptism. Maybe later in my life I will find out if all her words speak true but for now, I am skeptical but will heed some of the ideas that she presented in this book.
The best kept secrets about the commandments.......2002-09-23
Now here's the truth, finally! This book confirmed what I already knew in my heart but had been taught quite differently as a kid. Read with an open mind.
Elating!.......2002-01-26
Words cannot describe how you will feel when you are "loosened" from the ever tightening bonds of man made religion and back into the hands of your Creator. No writer has ever touched me the way Mary Summer Rain has, right down to my soul. I struggle now to find her books that are out of print that I just must get my hands on! I feel any message of hers is humble and heartfelt and worth reading over and over again. Each time you re-read them, you will find something there that you did not recall. Bottom Line-she portrays a world we all want and yearn for and instills us with hope that we will, one day, reach just that.
Thought provking.......2000-05-30
This is one book by Mary Summer Rain that is quite unlike her previous books. In this book, she has a visitation by an archangel, who is concerned about the spiritual state of mankind. Coming to Mary, he feels that her words will be able to awaken mankind and to help them "turnaround" their negative behavior.
I do believe that Mary's words impact millions of people as she has always lovingly written of the truth and has helped us see the truth.
The book is a fast read and expounds upon the Ten Commandments. The archangel goes into the "simplicity" of each one and how mankind has chosen to disregard these rules from God and explains what can be done to turn things around.
I just finished reading In God's Truth by Nick Bunick and along with this book by Mary Summer Rain, I feel that man has turned around the words of God and man has used these words in ways that God did not intend to be used. The simple words of faith and love have become distorted and as mentioned in the book, we have become an "I" and and a "me" generation.
This is a book of hope, of looking at where one is and where one needs to go. It is a book of introspection and asking of yourself "what is really, really important in my life?" Am I living my life as God wants me to? Would I do the things right now if God were standing right next to me?
Some pretty heavy issues in this book, bring up some major questions. You *will* question yourself and some of the answers you come up with will hopefully have you changing around your life.
I recommend this book enthusiastically.
