Book Description

For more than a century, Alice, Wendy and Dorothy have been our guides through the Wonderland, Neverland and Land of Oz of our childhoods. Now like us, these three lost girls have grown up and are ready to guide us again, this time through the realms of our sexual awakening and fulfillment. Through their familiar fairytales they share with us their most intimate revelations of desire in its many forms, revelations that shine out radiantly through the dark clouds of war gathering around a luxury Austrian hotel. Drawing on the rich heritage of erotica, Lost Girls is the rediscovery of the power of ecstatic writing and art in a sublime union that only the medium of comics can achieve. Exquisite, thoughtful, and human, Lost Girls is a work of breathtaking scope that challenges the very notion of art fettered by convention. This is erotic fiction at its finest. Similar to DC's Absolute editions of Watchmen and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Lost Girls will be published as three, 112-page, super-deluxe, ovesized hardcover volumes, all sealed in a gorgeous slipcase. It will truly be an edition for the ages.

1 out of 5 stars I feel validated in my disappointment..........2007-09-11

When I first read Lost Girls, I was so deeply disappointed in the flat, amateur artwork that it took me a while to realize how flat and unexciting the storytelling is as well. I can't believe that the book made it to production with the ridiculous dialect Alan Moore assigns to Dorothy, which is tremendously distracting in and of itself. I was expecting a magical experience from this collaboration - and to me magical doesn't mean it can't also be creepy and disturbing, which Lost Girls definitely is - but found this book to be the least imaginative of any Alan Moore I've read. At one point I thought the creepy factor might be clouding my view, but after reading other reviewers' comments, I felt validated to see that others share the same opinions about its shortcomings.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable erotica.......2007-09-01

OK, some will balk at the premise. We all know Dodgson's Alice, Baum's Dorothy, and Barrie's Wendy as little girls, in the familiar fictions built around them. This takes the fiction a step beyond, imagining the girls as grown women, thrown together in an isolated resort on the eve of the first world war. Alice, the grande dame, stands aloof from political unpleasantness. Wendy is wed to an industrialist more interested in armored boat hulls than in breakfast (or in her). Dorothy appears as a plain old farm girl, who can't imagine that grand duke Ferdinand might affect her little life. Geographically isolated at this odd resort and culturally isolated by their individual circumstance, they break their personal isolation in each others' company.

They succeed, and break each others' inhibitions as well. With Moore's script and Gebbie's delicate colors, we follow a delightful debauch. Alice takes the two younger ladies under her opium-scented wing, for languidly choreographed affections of the sapphic kind. Dorothy brings her farm-girl awareness of livestock breeding to her human relations, male and female. Wendy, the ignored housewife, blossoms under any attention at all. Other characters round out the goings-on with straight, gay, and solo loving. The happy and consensual tone could appeal to readers who've been turned off by harsher kinds of erotica, and Gebbie's delicate artwork treats it all with lucious respect.

Make no mistake, this is smut. Decide whether that's what you want. It's good smut, though, of a female-friendly kind - the kind that also appeals to men tired of all that negative imagery. If you often find your genitals requesting the company and comfort of your hands, this could be a story for them to read to each other.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant.......2007-08-10

A must-read for anyone who can handle it -- this is not "erotica," this is porn. The stories and illustrations are EXTREMELY graphic. Some of them are unbelievably hot, some are unbelievably disturbing, many are both. Not all the sex in this book is fun.

It's also a brilliant piece of literature. What Moore did previously with League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, he does again here, on a grander and more ambitious scale. He deconstructs these tales with a ruthlessness that is both horrifying and inspired.

5 out of 5 stars A solid piece of erotic fiction.......2007-04-02

While the art style may not appeal to everyone, "Lost Girls" is certainly worth a look if you like erotic fiction with a little more substance. The books provide an amusing interpretation of the "real" events behind "Alice in Wonderland", "Peter Pan" and "The Wizard of Oz". While the first two books do not appear to be particularily thought-provoking at first, they set the stage for some potent character development in the third book, when the formerly frivolous stories are cast in a harsh, new light.

Of note is that while events take on a darker tone in the third book, "Lost Girls" does not contain any particularily violent scenes. Unlike in most adult media, the focus of these three books is not the gratuitous depiction of extreme sexual acts, but raising questions and telling a solid story with believable characters. Alan Moore and Melinda Gebbie have done a great job, showing that pornography doesn't necessarily belong in the gutter.

All things said, "Lost Girls" is a charming, bittersweet tale about saying goodbye to your childhood, leaving your make-believe world and growing up, and well worth the price.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I hoped.......2007-03-06

I thought it was boring and a bit pointless. The illustrations were childish but the story line was interesting if a little disjointed. I wouldn't recommend these books unless you're somewhat innocent and looking for a thrill.

4 out of 5 stars a novel worthy of reading.......2007-08-16

This book poignantly describes the challenges of trying to assimilate into a new culture while maintaining the old. Alvarez does an exceptional job capturing the difficulty of trying to fit in, while trying to follow the beliefs and culture of the old country.

This is definitely a book to consider, for it will reveal the complications of assimilation, the love for our family, and the bond of sisterhood. Overall, this is a novel that provides insight towards a new culture.

2 out of 5 stars Poor little rich girls. .. ........2007-08-15

I found this book to be well enough written but the story was so-o-o whiny. Somehow I had trouble empathizing with these poor little rich girls who have to move away from their fancy lives but soon enough spend summers back on the island, go to New England boarding schools and live well again, albeit with fewer servants.

4 out of 5 stars The Girls Who Lived.......2007-08-10

Ms. Alvarez writes about her two homelands, the Dominican Republic and the United States, with such believability that I kept checking to see if I was reading a memoir rather than a novel (it's the latter). Her most famous work, In the Time of the Butterflies, is her imagined account of the lives of historical people who gave their lives in resistance to General Trujillo's dictatorship in the Dominican in the first half of the 20th century. "Garcia Girls" covers some of the same period, but tells the story of girls who lived, eventually to emigrate to the U.S. to struggle in different ways.

The structure of the novel takes some getting used to as Alvarez writes from now to then--starting with vignettes about grown women and working her way back to stories about their early childhood in the Dominican. She also switches voices among the four sisters--each has a distinct personality and life, but their similarities had me checking back sometimes to remind myself exactly who was speaking.

Fans of Ms. Alvarez who haven't read this book should do so. Newcomers might better start with "Butterflies" and then try "Garcia Girls", given that the latter switches among both place and narrator ("Butterflies" does the latter as well), and works its way back in time. "Butterflies" also gives some historical perspective about life under Trujillo that is important to understand to appreciate the travels of the Garcia family. Both books are appropriate for teenagers as well as adults.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2007-05-29

I was assigned to read this book for my college class--the history of the women's movement. It was very good and funny. I laughed out loud in many places. I finished the book in two days which is good for me since I am a slow reader. It held my interest the entire time.

2 out of 5 stars "Subtle...Powerful..."?.......2007-05-26

I don't really know what to say...But I feel disappointed that I didn't find How The García Girls Lost Their Accents to be the wonderful work that is proclaimed in the editorial reviews.

There are without a doubt some lines and parts that display Alvarez's talent with words...I enjoyed the very first episode of Yolanda and her craving for guavas. Some of the vignettes centering on Yolanda, I think, are some of the best in the book. But even then, there was something missing, and it was that I didn't connect with any of the characters as real people.

The sisters, we are told, all have different personalities, but essentially the only things that differentiate them in the reader's mind are their names. Carla, we are reminded many times, is the analyst in the family, the psychologist, which we can see in her comments, but she doesn't have a real voice; she isn't a real person. Mami, Papi, the aunts and uncles and the whole García family didn't come to life for me. At times, some of them were on the verge of coming off of the paper, but they never really did. Everything that is good in the novel is hard to appreciate as it is dampened by the rest.

Alvarez's exploration of some ideas, such as the displacement that immigrants experience, are not really effective...Sometimes she states things that we never really get a sense of and understand because we cannot sympathize with the characters. I think it is ultimately because of this that some parts feel contrived or not quite artfully done. As a whole, it is like a skeleton of a book. The organization of the vignettes (backwards in time) is creative but unmeaningful, and the vignettes themselves don't intertwine successfully to give us a "bigger picture" or insight or any sense of connection; rather, they are isolated, and as the narrator changes from 3rd person to Yolanda, the narration sounds the same. It doesn't captivate.

Right now I am more than halfway through the book, and I don't feel that it is worth finishing. I hope that How the García Girls Lost Their Accents isn't representative of Julia Alvarez's work...I should pick up another of hers but definitely do not feel motivated to at the moment...

For an American immigration story, The Joy Luck Club and The Namesake are two great novels!

This books was great, just like the last two. I was a little surprised with some of the twists and turns but never disappointed. Mr. Johnson did a great job in tying up Johnnie's story, that young lady really "lived" her life to the fullest. I loved all three books and have recommended and passed them on to all of my friends. Great story & so different from the norm. These three books are a must have. I will definately read Johnnie's story all over again....

I one word, EXCELLENT. Get 1 and 2 so you can see how this young lady went from rags to riches the hard way. Mr. Johnson has a winner.

2 out of 5 stars difficult to read.......2007-08-13

This book is condensed, I mean two pages printed on one page so the lettering is very small and none of the original art work is included. I did not realize when I bought it that the letters would be small. I also thought the original art work would be included. It's not bad if you want to read it with a magnifying glass.

3 out of 5 stars all the books none of the pictures.......2007-06-25

I was wondering how they could fit all 15 oz books into 1 volume. the answer is by having no illustrations, two columns per page, and very small print. I felt like I was reading a text book more than a childrens set of books. it still works for a bedtime story for my son (though he really wants pictures), but for something to keep my son occupied while we ride on the bus it's a bit big to tote around. the story's are as I expected, designed for kids with no really scary parts and super simple plots; dull for a grown up but good for younger kids.

I give this book 5 stars because it is "OZ". I purchased something similar, but much much better from Border's , two years ago. Available from Amazon, look for 'The OZ Chronicles'. Volume 1 and Volume 2 contain all of Baum's Oz books. Green Leather Hardcovers, great size print. Volume 3 contains Baum's other books and stories. Incredible find and value.

Book Description

After his blockbuster success of Little Black Girl Lost, Keith Lee Johnson takes us back to 1950's New Orleans, into the world of betrayal, envy, lust, and murder, where everyone has ulterior motives. Little Girl Lost left you in shock right up to the very end with its revealing truths of the world of Johnnie Wise, a 15-year-old girl, who was being pursued by ruthless crime boss, Napoleon Bentley, who will stop at nothing to have this young beauty.

Little Black Girl Lost II, begins as we find Johnnie in bed, and even though there is a thunderstorm directly over her Ashland Estates home, she is sleeping soundly for the first time since the murder of Richard Goode (her mother's killer), and the subsequent riots. However, during her waking hours, Napoleon Bentley enters her mind more often than she'd care to admit. She wants him to bed her again, but she loves Lucas Matthews, her boyfriend. Or is he?

Caution....don't start without having Little Black Girl Lost 3 at your fingertips.

Little Black Girl lost 2 was more inspiring and easier to follow after getting to know the characters in the first novel. It was inspiring to know the residents of Ashland Estates, but they too were trapped in a fable.

The novel was very well written and straight to the point. I really enjoyed it. I also like the fact that the author came out of the writing box and just wrote the story. I am not a fan of fluff.

Book Description

Imagine you're a young boy—maybe as young as three or four—separated from your family by civil war, traversing deserts and mountains with little food or water, no medical care, and no protection from wild animals. Imagine watching hundreds of boys perish around you from hunger, disease, or attacks by enemy soldiers and wild animals. To most of us, it is unimaginable, but this was reality for "The Lost Boys of Sudan," thousands of young boys who were separated from their families and forced to walk approximately 1,000 miles to reach safe refuge from war and certain death.

For the first time, this award winning book offers readers a chronological timeline of the epic journey taken by these children, beginning in their rural villages of Southern Sudan and ending with their arrival as young men to the United States. Narrated through the voice of Joan Hecht, one of their American mentors, whom they lovingly call "mom" or "Mama Joan;" "The Journey of the Lost Boys" is a compelling story of courage, faith and the sheer determination to survive by a group of young orphaned boys. Because of Joan Hecht's personal relationship with them, she is able to portray their story in a way that most famous reporters and authors cannot. In addition to her extensive research of the political and historical events surrounding the long lasting civil war in Sudan, are the heart-rending personal stories and original drawings of the boys themselves. A must read for anyone interested in the the true story of the Lost Boys of Sudan!

5 out of 5 stars The tragedy of the children of Sudan.......2007-03-31

I can only summarize my comment about this book in a few words. The author Joan Hecht did a wonderful task in narrating the frightening and heartbreaking experience of the thousands of lost boys of the Sudan,Africa's largest country. Their dangerous journey involving thousands of miles in a very hostile landscape is incredible. The author's very kind heart, sincere consideration and admiration for these children is worth more than all the gold of the world. Very highly recommended for young and old.

5 out of 5 stars Learning about Sudan? START HERE.......2006-10-15

This is the book you need to read if you are unfamiliar with the background of the issues in Sudan, the Lost Boys, and the issues faced by refugees who come to America. Ms. Hecht might not be an " academic", but she is the person with an enormous amount of first hand information on these subjects, and she breaks it down into managable pieces. Even if you are knowledgable on these subjects, this book is still useful as a clarifying tool. Ms. Hecht is also very committed, and that comes through on every page.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING BOOK .......2006-08-11

Readers of this book will be touched by the stories of these incredible young men, who, at an early age, were separated from their parents and families. The atrocities witnessed by the boys are unspeakable. The author has provided the readers with stories that make those who have lived a life without fear take a new appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy in the United States.

2 out of 5 stars A good term paper.......2006-07-26

The endless conflict in Sudan is another calamity that the press should have been bombarding us with daily for years. A tragedy of such dimensions should torment our collective conscience. This is exactly why it deserves a better telling than Ms. Hecht is able to offer us. The writing is amateurish and the text cries out for the editing it appears not to have been subjected to. Easy streamlining and the correction of some grammatical errors would make the book more readable and more powerful. Ms. Hecht's devotion to the cause of the Lost Boys is clearly sincere and praiseworthy, however, and she does deserve thanks for contributing to making us aware of the atrocities that go on in the world while we turn the other way.

5 out of 5 stars An accurate, heartfelt and well-written account.......2006-06-28

Joan Hecht's "Journey" is in this reviewer's opinion the most interesting and accurate book available on the topic of the Lost Boys. As a former foster father to one of the lost boys and a fellow author and researcher, I recommend the book without hesitation. It presents an extraordinarily complicated situation in a manner that is comprehensible, fascinating and accurate. It gives the reader a true sense of the horror, courage and hope that has gripped a generation of young Sudanese men.

For its rare photos, clear and organized presentation and sincere prose, I highly recommend this informative and inspiring book and thank the author for her outstanding efforts.

Drew Barrymore is to be congratulated. Her honesty is painfully refreshing and hasn't been seen lately since the new Star Jones book ... or possibly the Burt Reynolds biography.

She's seen the depths and the heights and knows the difference. She's drank the champagne (even though she was 8 at the time) and sipped the sewer water and prefers the former. She's been on the carpet and also received carpet burns on her knees when she was short rent.

Thank you Drew for being an inspiration to all the preteens with drinking problems ... they don't have to suffer in silence anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Drew Barrymore is an inspiration. Period........2005-07-10

Literally one of the greatest books I've ever read. No, I'm not saying that because I'm a Drew Barrymore fan. I mean, if acting isn't what she wanted to do, she could've been an author! Written when she was still in rehab circa late 1988 and published in 1990, this book gives all of us an insight into her early years, and the hell she went through at such a young age. She tells us about her first taste of alcohol, cigarettes, cocaine, and marijuana. She also tells us about her first kiss, and her first makeout session, and how she was always fighting with her mother. She tells us about living at the rehab. She tells us about her visits with her father as well. She shares all of her stories and adventures, her mishaps and her first achievements. With this book, I've learned how truly strong this woman is, and how no matter what she went through, she didn't ever back down at achieving what she wanted. Drew Barrymore is a true idol for anyone, and this book proves that.

5 out of 5 stars Fasanating.......2005-05-18

I read this book 5 times in High School. (1992-1996)
I LOOOOOOOVED it!!!

5 out of 5 stars entertaining book about glamour, drugs, and lies.......2005-04-08

I was pleasantly surprised after I finished reading this book! It's very entertaining from start to finish, and as you read more and more about this little girl's life, it gets more and more interesting.
When you think Drew has hit the bottom, you turn a page and she goes farther down. It's amazing to see how strong Drew is, and every page is filled with interesting details.
It includes stories about her first drink and more, and you are amazed that such an inasant looking girl was into the worst of drugs. She tells about the terrifying and amazing incidents that came from the drugs. After you are finished, you are interested in knowing more and more about what happened to Drew.
If you want to read a very satisfying book, I highly reccomend this one!

5 out of 5 stars The best book!.......2005-03-19

I used to really dislike Drew Barrymore. ( no offence if u DO read this) i was being forced to read a biography for my lang. arts class so i picked drew cuz she was the only 1 who seemed at least worth reading bout. i dont really want to read bout someone old dead guy. so i started liking her when i started not likeing Adam Sandler as much as i used to cuz thats really the only reason i hated her cuz she was always with adam. i mean now that im not screwed up with adam i c she wasnt always with him @ all. so i started reading it and in so many ways i wanted to b friends with her and help her. but not get high with her. :) its so awesome! now i want to buy it. if i had any advice to give, everyone who thinks their live is bad, read this book. evn if u dont everyone should read this. well i gtg bye this wonderful book bye! Book Description

Johnnie Wise was just fifteen years old when her mother sold her virginity to an unscrupulous white insurance man named Earl Shamus. Stunningly beautiful, with long naturally wavy black hair, she possessed the voluptuous body of a thirty-year-old woman. Her skin was the color of brown sugar. Johnnie had heard about Earl Shamus and his escapades among the poor black women in New Orleans. But what she didn't know was that Shamus had quietly made several of the girls in their neighborhood his reluctant concubines when their youthful bodies ripened—she was next.

Enter 1950's New Orleans, a world of betrayal, envy, lust and murder, where everyone has ulterior motives. Take a peek at Johnnie Wise, a 15-year-old girl, being pursued by ruthless crime boss, Napoleon Bentley, who will stop at nothing to have this young beauty. Little Girl Lost will shock you right up to the very end with its revealing truths.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting .......2007-08-16

This book was very interesting, I finished it in two days! I just have one question, what happened to Earl? After the riot his business had to pay out for all the insurance claims and eventhough his wife paid Johnnie to stay away from her husband; could Earl live without seeing Johnnie? I can't wait to read the sequel!

5 out of 5 stars Captures 1950's New Oreleans.......2007-08-11

This book, which takes place in 1950's New Orleans, is a real page turner. It keeps you wanting to know what happens next. Be warned, however, there is a lot of R-rated situations and descriptions in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Start of a Beautiful Series.......2007-06-06

I have to admit this has to be one of the best of the beginning of a series I have ever read. The title has nothing on the actual contents of the book. Take a journey with Johnnie Wise and all the other characters of this touching series. Keith Lee Johnson will keep you captivated on the book until the last word is read. Caution....don't start without having Little Black Girl Lost 2 and Little Black Girl Lost 3 at your fingertips.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I thought...........2007-05-09

101 people before me have already told you "about" this novel so I'll keep mine short. This book was just ok for me, but ok enough for me to want to read #2 to find out what happens. Maybe (I hope) it's better than this one.

3 out of 5 stars readaholic.......2007-04-03

I enjoyed this novel. Although Johnny may have had more opportunities I believe that it was hard for her to find them. It feels like you're doomed when the one person in your life whom you believe you can depend on lets you down when you're an adult. I can only imagine what Johnny felt like when it happened to her. This along with what was going on in those times made it hard for many people to see the truth. Johnny is not out of the ordinary. I have to give her props for doing the best she knew how at such a young age.

Product Description

"Diary of a Lost Girl" is the facinating autobiography of Kola Boof, the former mistress of Osama Bin Laden. She writes about the hardships of being vaginally circumcised, about witnessing her birth parents killed in her presence as a small child, about slavery and Arabism in Sudan, about being adopted and raised in the U.S. by African Americans. Kola talks candidly about love, her hopes and the future of her sons.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking and Gut-wrenching.......2007-06-03

I never cared much for Kola Boof's story until I stumbled upon the massive details that the media has deliberatley not reported as they've tried to portray this woman, and to a lesser degree Ayan Hirsi Ali, as "crazed agenda-driven reactionaries", "liars" and "nutcases". There's tons of stuff that I've since found on the internet about Kola Boof, but this book is heartbreaking, its gut-wrenching and I have to say that it absolutely rings very true.

In fact, I'm convinced Kola Boof's autobiography is so truthful and honest that "certain people" with their own political agendas simply can't take it, and like so many courageous black women before her, Kola is getting a mixture of stereotypical racist and sexist reactions because the plight calls into question the status of black females worldwide as well as African versus Arab relations and to cap it off she's not a sympathizer of Palestinians (after reading the book you'll understand why) and has supported Israel, which is very unpopular with both liberal white democrats and the Pro-Muslim Black community in America.

As a black woman, I cursed, laughed and cried reading this book. It really meant something to me and I thank Kola Boof for being the bold "mentally unhinged" firebrand that she is. I don't ever review books on AMAZON but I had to review this one. Deserves a 10 plus.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Woman and a Great Book!.......2007-03-31

I hadn't heard of Kola Boof until a few weeks ago, when the news came out that bin Laden had a "thing" for Whitney Houston-- according to his former mistress/sex slave. Always interested in the subject matter of Islamic terrorism, I ordered this book. I am so glad I did, too.

Kola Boof is a wonderful and HONEST writer. This is really one of the most passionate and honest memoirs I have read. She writes of her childhood growing up Muslim in Sudan-- the child of a Sudanese and an Egyptian. She shares her memories of her parents' love and her parents' murder. She shares her pain at being subsequently abandoned by her grandmother. Of the horrors she saw perpetuated by Muslim Arabs.

It's really an incredible book. Kola Boof's story is more of a testament to her life and her life's calling-- which is to educate the public about Islam and Islam's aim for Islamic rule and a return to the Caliphate. The author has seen unbelievable evil including rape, murder, beatings, theft. She talks about the slaves that the Muslims kept (her father was unhappy about this and spoke out-- that's why he was killed). She shares all of this with the reader eloquently and passionately. She will not be silenced.

Kola has denounced Islam and considers herself an African Woman and believes in "the Goddess". She is a feminist. However, because she criticizes Islam, she has been virtually ignored by the press and ignored by the Democratic party, although she is definitely a liberal democrat herself. The author points out the hypocrisy today within the Democratic party and the party's hypocritical tolerance for those who are intolerant of all, while being intolerant of those who just wish to speak the truth, share their stories, and share their information. This book is for EVERYONE, however. Please don't dismiss it because of your political leanings. This book is too important.

Some might find Kola a bit strong. This is her strength, though. She will not be silenced in the face of injustice. Her past could have cowered her, instead it gave her unbelievable strength. She is definitely a woman to be admired and listened to.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful writing.......2007-03-22

I've had this book for maybe about 6 months and I've read it twice already. This is one of those books that you pick up to read and you just CAN'T PUT IT DOWN.

Regardless of what you think of the writer or her views or her politics, what can't be denied is that she is a spectacular writer who keeps your attention. If you agree with her, you'll be yelling "go, girl" at every page. If you disagree with her, you'll be pounding your fist on the table as you read it. That's another beauty of her writing: no matter HOW you feel, her words have you hooked, the way she weaves them together has you not just thinking, but getting EMOTIONAL about it.

All I can say is that I'm really looking forward to more works by this author and I'm really thinking of purchasing her other works as well.

5 out of 5 stars Sistah Malika.......2007-03-16

To all you nay sayers I would like to say "Only God Can Judge We" I was not there through all of the accounts that KOla went through but I do not doubt her experiences at all. I do want to say that a lot of people would have cracked a long time ago, so Dear, Sweet Kola I admire you for your strength. The book is a must read and I give it a 10!

5 out of 5 stars Osama Bin Laden's Black Mistress.......2007-03-10

Unlike others I really did read the book primarily to see if I believed this woman was Bin Laden's mistress and now that I've read the book I absolutely DO believe it. I have spoken with many people about North African politics and it seems that African women are raped and forced into relationships such as the one Ms. Boof describes quite frequently and I also heard that Bin Laden surrounded himself with Black Arabs while in Sudan and other African countries not to mention Ms. Boof is a very alluring and brilliant woman in her own right. She certainly can write her tail off and she has a gift for insight. The big shocker of the book is Kola Boof's penchant for truth-telling which cannot be faked. I do not care how much the media attacks this woman or how the white establishment and their news reporters try to paint her as a lying "dark" person, I know the truth when I read it and this woman is telling the truth. I did not know that a PRINCETON critic chose her book as the best of 2006 (I've since read the article online) but I'm not the least bit surprised. This is book grips you on so many levels.

When Babar and Celeste's new baby girl is born, everyone rejoices. What fun it is to watch little Isabelle learn to walk and play trumpet and roller skate... and get lost in the mountains! After the family goes for a walk one day, they discover young Isabelle is missing. Carelessly, Isabelle has forgotten what her papa told her last time she wandered off: never to disappear without telling her family where she is going. Eventually, the little rascal finds herself near the home of old family friends and ends up having a delightful day playing with them, until they see Babar on TV, desperately searching for his daughter. After a thrilling ride on a hang glider, the prodigal daughter returns to the welcoming (if scolding) arms of her family.

Laurent de Brunhoff's exciting Babar adventures, based on his father's original tales and artwork (The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant, Babar the King, etc.), continue to thrill readers, generation after generation. The familiar watercolors of this beloved elephant family are as appealing as ever, even in a contemporary story that includes CD players with earphones and yoga exercises. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Babar and Celeste have a new little girl! Isabelle is playful, spunky, and curious—maybe a bit too curious. One day she wanders off to look for Boover and Picardee, friends of the family who live nearby. The three have a lovely day, playing, singing, and snacking. But back at home, everyone is in a panic—Isabelle is lost!

A warm and humorous adventure that reminds young children not to run off on their own, Babar's Little Girl is a charming addition to every Babar collection.

3 out of 5 stars Good for daughters who are younger siblings.......2006-03-18

This delightful story is a complete ego trip for little girls who find themselves the youngest in a family of several siblings. It features many adventures, adoring older children, adoring parents, and a little girl who is the apple of everyone's eye. It also -- a bit subtly -- features beloved family friends who are a same-sex couple. This goes over the heads of the little ones.

5 out of 5 stars The stuff you read to your child.......2005-10-19

I loved Babar as a kid. However, I only knew about the first three books. I was happy to see there were more.

This is a sweet little story about the new addition to the family. We get to see Pom, Flora and Alexander have grown and welcome their new sister Isabelle. She is a special child, independent and adventuras much to her families chagrin.

There other the other characters; the old lady, Arthur, Zephir, and Boover and Picardee.

My girl loves this story and I still read it several times a week.

The book is built well and has a good cloth binding that stands well to a 4 year olds use and abuse.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Babar, but be a little careful..........2003-02-22

I just read this story to my four-year old daughter. It's a classic story from this author, nothing "wrong" with it, but you do need to watch out and may want to explain some parts. In the storyline, the girl elephant wanders off by herself and accepts a boatride from a stranger...then she knocks on the door of an unfamiliar house. Two male characters invite her inside and they all play together until they overhear a news alert that Babar is looking for his missing daughter, so they take her home. After reading it, I explained to my daughter that I didn't want her to wander off, accept boat rides from strangers or knock on unfamiliar doors and go inside a stranger's home. This story was written in a simpler era when concerns were a bit different than in today's world.

5 out of 5 stars Isabella Joins the Babar Family and Has a Great Adventure!.......2001-03-26

If you are a Babar fan, you know Pom, Flora, and Alexander quite well. In this book, Celeste is about to have a baby. Babar is hoping for a girl, so he will have equal numbers of daughters and sons. When Celeste unexpectedly gives birth under a tree, he gets his wish! The remainder of the story describes Isabella's babyhood and her personality. I enjoyed this first Isabella story, and look forward to hearing more about her in future Babar books.

Isabella brings great pleasure to the royal elephant family. Babar is a proud papa. "Celeste loved to show her off at every opportunity. Pom, Flora, and Alexander were enchanted . . . and so was everyone else."

Everyone agreed Isabella was an "amazing baby." She soon stood in her cradle and hurled her toys at her siblings. She had a hearty appetite and was "full of energy." But she could be very quiet, and would sit peacefully watching a grasshopper (her favorite insect) in the grass.

As an independent child, she began to present challenges. At her fifth birthday party, she went off alone and Babar had to scold her.

A few days later the whole family went for a walk. Isabella had already forgotten about the scolding, and went off to play hide-and-seek with herself. Soon, she was nowhere to be found. Then her great adventure began.

When it was over, cousin Arthur didn't believe a word of her story, even though it was all true. Babar scolded her, and she fell asleep on his large lap. "Our little girl is very special," he said.

This book is excellent for introducing the idea of having a new sibling in a family, and that life will be different than anyone can expect. Parents who are about to have a new offspring should get this book as one of many to help ease the transition.

I also liked the idea that children have unique personalities, and will express those personalities as easily as they breathe. I was glad to see that Isabella was made more distinctive than the other Babar children in this way, who often seem to be a little on the uninteresting side.

The other appeal of this book is how a family adapts and becomes different with each new arrival. That message is carried out in a positive and pleasant way, that is totally credible. Nicely done!

The book is good, too, for reinforcing the idea of getting help from family friends. So if you child is accidentally locked out of the house, it will seem natural to go to the friendly parents of a neighbor child to get the key you have left there. This story should make every child feel more wanted, and part of a wide support network of loving adults and family.

After you finish enjoying this story, I suggest that you ask your child to tell you more about what a family is, what each person in your family is like, and what she or he hopes for from being part of the family. You can use the Babar stories as one point of reference. One good connection here is that the Babars have lots of friends who have relationships with the children. Does your child like or not like that feature? In this way, you can help your child begin to visualize what kind of life he or she will want to build as an adult.

Appreciate the specialness of each person, animal, and plant!
