Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Encouraging reading.......2007-07-16

A great book for early readers, Seuss explores concepts of reading and the value of reading with the usual sillyness that is throughout his books.

4 out of 5 stars I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!.......2006-11-20

The thing I like about the book is that it encourages parent/child reading and conversation, and encourages the child to use his/her imagination. "Reading with eyes shut;" my child attempted it and then began to ask a million questions: How does the Cat in the Hat read anything with his eyes shut? Why can't i see the words with my eyes shut? Can YOU read with your eyes shut?

3 out of 5 stars One of the lesser Dr. Seuss books.......2006-04-17

I'm a huge Dr. Seuss fan -- he taught me to read -- but this is, in all honesty, not one of his better books. The message is great (reading, yay!) but the delivery is weak. The artwork and the text are both a bit flat, and he seems to be straining to emulate the vibrant wackiness of his earlier work. There's nothing "wrong" with this book, but you may find yourself reading it, wondering why it just isn't as fun as it ought to be. It's okay, but there are better books out there, including a LOT of great ones he's written.

3 out of 5 stars Against the go to sleep club.......2005-07-30

I'm way too old for beginner books but I read "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!" anyway. It's good for young readers, but against the go to sleep club. It focuses on "Keep your eyes open so you can READ!" soooo much that it fights going to sleep. And what sense does "Reading with my eyes shut is bad for my hat and makes my eyebrows red hot!" make? They should say it's bad for your eyes but no, they say it's bad for your eyebrows and hat. And it would be terrible for Russian Blue Witch because she LOVES books toooooo much to pay attention to the world around her and help people. It would be better teaching going to sleep because I never let my sisters sleep, chattering stories all night. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"

4 out of 5 stars Pretty cute book.......2005-05-03

This book is probably good if you have a young reader wanting to read a simple book. But if you're reading it to a child before bedtime, it doesn't really tell much of a story. I know that sounds weird, but it just kinda gets annoying after awhile to some children and it doesn't really spark too much imagination. Yes, it does create conversation about why the cat goes through trying to read with his eyes shut, but really, it just isn't all that much fun for a child to read. I'd try something else first like Go Dog Go, or just check this one out of the library first before buying it. You may like it but my family didn't. It just was boring to them. They couldn't wait until I put it down and picked up another book!

Book Description

The Cat and company travel by hot air balloon up and into various weather phenomena including rain, snow, thunder, tornadoes, and (yikes!) even hurricanes! Along the way they learn about thermometers, anemometers, wind vanes, cloud formations, humidity, fog, smog, weather folklore, and how to stay safe in lightning. Written and illustrated in Seussian style, this a great addition to the Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Happy Grandson.......2006-07-08

My grandson was very happy with this book. He loves reading books by Dr. Seuss and knows when he comes to Grandma's house a new one will be waiting for him. The book was presented as "used" but it looks brand new! Delivery time was as promised. Only negative comment for all the used books I have purchased thus far is that the postage charged has been far more than the book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to weather concepts.......2004-10-25

I think this is one of the best of the books in Cat in the Hat's Learning Library. In this book, the rhymes are crisp and interesting. Some of the concepts introduced/covered include: meteorologists, weather maps, clouds, evaporation, condensation, snow, rain, thunder, lightning, tornadoes, and climatology. This book covers a lot in the simple and effective Cat in the Hat style.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful book.......2007-10-01

My daughter loves it and I love to read it to her. One of our favorite Cat-in-the-hat books!

5 out of 5 stars "Mr. Dinosaur" loves this book!.......2002-07-02

My son who will soon be five years old, loves this book. We read it three times in a row when I first purchased it and we have read it many times since. It's clever and fun and informational, too. A great addition for the dinosaur book collector.

5 out of 5 stars The best dino book for preschoolers.......1999-11-30

I bought this book for my three year old and was delighted to find that it is a book that will also grow with my son. He loves the ryhmes and the illusrations. The book holds his attention while also teaching him.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful book.......1999-08-16

Let's put it this way, my 4 year old can now accurately pronounce the names of the dinosaurs and knows a fair amount about them. This book is wonderful. If your child is into dinosaurs this is the one book that you should get. It even gives a list of other dinosaur books that you can turn to for further reference. I'd have given it 6 stars or more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for teaching health and fitness.......2007-08-13

Great, fun book for young children. Wonderful way to introduce young ones to the ideas of eating right and staying fit so they can be healthy and strong. I will be using it in a preschool age classroom but my own children would have really enjoyed this one.

4 out of 5 stars Staying healthy and self esteem.......2007-07-14

Some really important messages in this Seuss style beginner book including
the importance of hygiene, exercise, good nutrition, body safety, recognising and talking about own feelings, everyone is special and unique.
Sometimes the rhymes lose a bit of their rhythm, but overall I think it is a fair adaption of Seuss style, but most importantly it is a fun way to begin concepts of taking care and valuing yourself with young children.

4 out of 5 stars cute and fun but out of date.......2006-11-10

The book is great and has wonderful healthy positive messages. My kids love it and ask to read it over and over. The only dissapointment is that it still has one page with the old food guide pyramid.

5 out of 5 stars Oh the things you can do that are good for you.......2005-12-10

I like this book because it taught me all different things when i was littler. Like how to brush my teeth, floss, wash my hands, wash my hair, get exercise, how to deal with a cold, the right food to eat, and how its important at the end of the day to get your rest. This book taught me so much and im thankful for that.
Alyssa Seifferly

3 out of 5 stars Cauliflower in the Hat.......2005-10-18

My kids (boys 8 and 5) still ask to hear this book at bedtime at least once every couple of weeks, so obviously the intended audience enjoys this. My own objections -- having read the thing aloud to said kids at least 100 times -- are largely aesthetic. The rhymes in this book are either strained

It can travel five feet
and blasts out with great power
at speeds over one hundred
miles an hour!

or facile (the Garoo in Fadoo tell me true, they do - just like you!) to a degree that bugs me as a Seuss fan.

To be fair, this problem turns up throughout the Learning Library series, not just in the volumes written by Tish Rabe. When you have to cover every health issue under the sun short of cancer and addiction (or every dinosaur or aspect of plant reproduction), it's probably pretty rough to hold a rhyme scheme and use words that kids can understand. Rabe does a respectable enough job at it that -- well, guess what the little Dinos want to hear again tonight?

5 out of 5 stars the fire house cat.......2007-05-14

my daughter enjoyed this book when she was small. so much so that it looked very well used now my granddaughter is enjoying the book and it fast becoming her favorite book to read

5 out of 5 stars I loved it as a kid, and I love it now!.......2006-05-10

Even though it isn't a "funny" book, I find myself utterly amused
with the pictures. The story is simple and charming.
The book is a classic in my eyes, and very special to me. I hope it will be for you too.

5 out of 5 stars My daughter's first real chapter book.......2005-12-09

My daughter (she's six) just finished reading this book herself, out loud to me at bedtime. It took her four or five nights to read the three short chapters.

In the middle of the book, when Pickles the cat has a small triumph, she said "it makes me cry!" and at the end she said "I wish it just kept going". I felt so glad for her to have the experience of what it's like to read a good book - these are the feelings that make one a real book lover for life!

Like another recent reviewer I thought the pictures a little crude but the cats were remarkably cat-like; there was no effort to make them cute or cuddley. Yet, perhaps because of that simplicity, Pickles invokes a strong sense of feeling/identification as the he "grows" into a better cat through the three short chapters.

I think this was the perfect book for my daughter to read at this time. Just challenging enough, a great story and illustrations that work very well with the story. I'm also am glad to find a good children's book that's NOT about a boy (though Pickles IS a "he"); I'm sure all parents with daughters know that the vast majority of kid's books are about boy hero (yes I know there are some excellent exceptions) so a wonderful book that's not about a boy is a great find.

5 out of 5 stars Blessed to have found this item here!.......2005-07-23

I was thrilled when after trying to track this item down everywhere, I found it here, CHEAP, in mint condition, and sent to me in less than 48 hours! This was my favorite book when I was in 2nd grade, and now my 6 year old son who started reading when he was 4 and is obsessed with firefighters & cats and dogs now counts it as one of his own favorites. If you have children, BUY THIS! And if you don't, get it now while you still have a place to find it so that you will have it to share in the future.

5 out of 5 stars A fun book .......2006-03-09

My 4 year old really enjoys this whole series of Cat in the Hat books. He loves "reading" about insects, flowers, space, etc. The format of this series of books is very similar (if not exact)and are easy to follow and keeps a busy boy captivated. The rhyming, illustrations (& antics) keep my son interested and learning in the process.

5 out of 5 stars It's Not Quite Seuss, But It's Not Bad.......2003-06-07

Joining the ranks of characters who live on long after their creators has passed away, it's The Cat in the Hat!

Here, you get to see the cat, Thing 1 and Thing 2, and the two kids as they explore the basics of flowering plants. The prose is at an appropriate level for kids who like the longer Dr. Seuss books. The illustrations (by Aristides Ruiz) are so close to the original that I couldn't tell the difference.

The only minor quibble is that the words don't flow QUITE as well as Theodore Geisel's words. Then again, few writer's words do. Also, Ms. Worth is faced with trying to teach a subject and entertain at the same time. At that task, she succeeds admirably.

Highly recommended.

She borrowed the book from the school librarry and we somehow lost it. The librarian insisted I replace it - hence the order.
Biscuit lives on...

5 out of 5 stars My first book review .......2005-05-21

The book Biscuit Wants to Play is about a puppy named Biscuit and two kittens. Biscuit wants to play with them, but they won't play with him. The kittens always want to play with something else. They run around and get stuck on a tree. Biscuit barks and barks until the girls come out and rescue the kittens from the tree

The author's purpose is to entertain the reader. When I was reading the book I was entertained by what the kittens and Biscuit did. Some parts in the story were funny. Another purpose is that the author taught me
that friend's are important. The author really entertained me I think the story was very cool and entertaining.

I think this author is a good author. I would recommend this story to my friend. I would read more stories from this author Alyssa Satin Capuclli.

5 out of 5 stars Biscuit and the Kittens.......2003-09-19

Biscuit meets a pair of kittens and decides he wants to play with them. But try as he might, the kittens pay no attention to him as they play and explore on their own.

But this changes when the kittens follow a butterfly up a tree and can not get down. Biscuit barks and gets the attention of The Girl In The Purple Sneakers and The Girl With Puddles and the little cats are rescued. We then see them playing with their helpful new friend Biscuit.

Another fine story. This one shows that while you may not always get your own way, things usually work out in the end. Filled with more adorable illustrations.

4 out of 5 stars Purrrfect Pet Book.......2007-03-20

Oh, the Pets You Can Get by Tish Rabe is an excellent book for young readers who like animals and rhyming. This book is also a good book for kids who like Dr.Seuss. This book is designed to teach young readers how to take care of pets. I think this book is for all ages. I also this book this for the kids who want to become animal experts. The pictures are beautiful. They have very bright colors. I think this will be the first thing that young readers would notice. In the pictures are pets. You might notice other characters like The Cat in the Hat, Thing 1 and Thing 2, and the boy and girl. I think the pictures are the most unique element in the book. This book takes place in Gerpletz. Gerpletz is a place where the pets are treated like people. In Gerpletz, they have pets like cats, dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits and parakeets. In the book, Thing 1 and Thing 2 give you facts about the animals. Even though Gerpletz was made up, I want to go there. Oh, the Pets You Can Get is very useful. It gives you information and tips on how to keep your pet and you healthy. If a young reader gets stuck on a word, they can look in the glossary. It also teaches about the pet individually. This book can also be used as a guide. Oh, the Pets You Can Get teaches you about pets, but it also teaches that your pet loves you more than anything else. You can learn a lot from this book. If you have a pet you might want to read this book. I love Oh, the Pets You Can Get because anybody can read it. Even if you're an adult or in kindergarten

5 out of 5 stars A good picturebook introduction to the world of pet ownership.......2005-09-12

New to the Cat in the Hat's Learning Library series is the zany coverage of animal friends, featuring the Cat in Hat illustrations by Aristides Ruiz and Joe Mathieu and telling of the Cat in the Hat's visit to a land of pets. Containing nonfiction information but reading with the drama and grace of fiction, Oh, The Pets You Can Get: All About Our Animal Friends is a good picturebook introduction to the world of pet ownership.

Book Description

Spring fever comes to the small town of Crozet, Virginia. As the annual Dogwood Festival approaches, postmistress Mary Minor “Harry” Haristeen feels her own mating instincts stir.

As for tiger cat Mrs. Murphy, feline intuition tells her there’s more in the air than just pheromones. It begins with a case of stolen hubcaps and proceeds to the mysterious death of a dissolute young mechanic over a sobering cup of coffee. Then another death and a shooting lead to the discovery of a half-million crisp, clean dollar bills that look to be very dirty.

Now Harry is on the trail of a cold-blooded murderer. Mrs. Murphy already knows who it is--and who’s next in line. She also knows that Harry, curious as a cat, does not have nine lives. And the one she does have is hanging by the thinnest of threads.

For all lovers of Rita Mae Brown and Ms. Murphy this is one of the best.

4 out of 5 stars my favorite of the series.......2006-07-12

This book really has an interesting plot and moves along with it. It is much more a mystery than usual and I enjoyed it very much. Of course there are the usual antics of the animals - they are endearing. I almost always pick up one of these books when I've had it with the world and want something comfortable to slip into. This one's a particular pleasure.

4 out of 5 stars It's spring in Crozet........2005-10-11

It's finally spring in Crozet, Virginia, but the weather is as unsettled as some of the happenings in this little town. There appears to be a lot of deaths - one looked like natural causes, one looked like suicide and one was murder, but as Harry and her pals delve deeper into the mire, it appears that the deaths are all connected and they were all murder. This book moves along at a pretty swift pace, and we have lots of hijinks with the fabulous thres pets as well as more contact with our old friends in Crozet. This is a great cozy series, and because of that we get to become good friends with the good citizens of Crozet. But there's sure a lot of crime in this piece of Virginia!

5 out of 5 stars Catch As Catch Can.......2005-07-07

Love Sneaky Pie and friend. Wish I could live in Crozet and be one of the group. Maybe better wish I could be one of the animals. They are funny, endearing and totally wonderful.

1 out of 5 stars Worst book I ever read.......2005-04-16

So my girlfriend made me read this book. I almost broke up with her because of it. I mean, come on people! Nothing happens in the book, the cats who are supposed to help solve the "mystery" don't lift a paw, the whole thing is so bad and convoluted that at the end, the author has to explain to you all the things that happend that she couldn't manage to fit into the book somehow, so there was no way for you to even have any clue at all what was happening.

Look, I love cats. They're cool. This book made me want to kick cats and the author. Don't waste your time unless you like falling asleep in the middle of scenes that are supposed to be "action" or getting really angry that you paid for this book. (I didn't...my girlfriend loaned me hers. I gave it back. Good riddance.)
