Book Description
Be all over “minuscule.” Score big with “curvaceous.” Hit “trireme” out of the park. From the authorities behind the Scripps National Spelling Bee comes a comprehensive illustrated book on the endangered art of spelling.
Written for ages 9 and up, How to Spell Like a Champ shows kids how to build word lists, and organize and study them most effectively. How to gain knowledge of etymology, word roots, and spelling patterns from English and other languages. Here are commonly missed words and word patterns— and those feisty (who said “i before e except after c”?) words that don’t fit any pattern. Synonyms, antonyms, eponyms. Suffixes and prefixes. Plus, a whole chapter of word searches and other skill-building games enforces the lessons learned. The book is also a spelling bee primer for the ten million kids who participate in Scripps spelling bees on the local level. It tells what to study, how to study, how much to study. Readers learn what to expect in a bee—whether a classroom contest or the Scripps National Final—and how they can make it through each round by asking the right questions and using their well-honed instincts. Included is an audio CD featuring Dr. Jacques Bailly himself, the official voice of the National Spelling Bee as heard on ABC, ESPN, and in the movies.
Spelling bees are hot stuff: The National Spelling Bee is one of ESPN’s most talked about annual broadcasts, plus bees are the subject of a Tony award–winning Broadway musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; a bestselling novel, Bee Season; an Oscar-nominated documentary, Spellbound; and a forthcoming major motion picture starring Laurence Fishburne, Akeelah and the Bee.
Today’s word: “estimable.”

Bravo!.......2007-04-06
How to Spell Like a Champ is an excellent book and really helps students with spelling. My son read this book, and became very motivated. He decided to participate in the school spelling bee. He learned excellent study habits and how words with different language origins have different rules. This book includes word lists, stories of past spelling bee contestants at the national level, and includes a CD that puts you in the life of a student competing at the spelling bee from the class bee to the final round of the National Spelling Bee.
Three authors were involved in writing this book: Carolyn Andrew, Barrie Trinkle, and Paige Kimble. Carolyn Andrew's son won the national spelling bee in 1994, Barrie Trinkle won it in 1973, and Paige Kimble won it in 1981. My son was so motivated, and learned so much, he worked hard, and in result, won his school spelling bee, and got to compete in the regional spelling bee. In the regionals, he placed third. THIRD!!! I WAS SO HAPPY FOR HIM! I know he is excited about next year's spelling bee. You HAVE to buy this book. I would also highly recommend watching the movie Spellbound.

Want to go to Scripps? This is a great resource!.......2007-03-12
This book is an excellent, entertaining resource for children who may aspire to go to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. It contains many helpful suggestions and is written in an interesting way. It's very readable and I'd recommend it to anyone with a child with that goal.
Great help to get to the Nationals.......2007-03-11
This book was actually very helpful to me. Not knowing what would it lead me to, i joined our school spelling bee club in December, last year. I had no idea that i would actually be in our school spelling bee. Then, we had our winter break; and over the winter break, i actually saw a re-run of the 2006 Scripps National Spelling Bee. And i was so amazed, yet motivated at the same time. That's when I decided, I want to go to the National Spelling Bee.
Yes, it was the last week of December, and I hardly had any time. I mean, people who go all the way to D.C. study starting from the summer right? So just to get a start, I bought this book, How to Spell like a Champ. This book taught me a lot! The CD also did too. But the book was great...not only did it give you tips, but it let you live through the National Spelling Bee, and it included a bunch of words throughout the whole book! And there were so many interesting facts on every other page. It wasn't like those boring non-fiction books. And so, even though I started this whole spelling interest this year, in January, I'm glad I did.
And the best part is, I'm really going to the Nationals this year. =) And it only took two months of studying. Did I mention that this book was a big help?

Practical Tips for Effective Teaching.......2000-11-16
CHAMPS provides practical tips on how to organize and manage a classroom. Excellent tips on how to reduce the probability of problem behaviors arising. I've begun to use it a part of a course I teach on classroom management. Response from students has been very positive. CHAMPS also serves as a good companion to the Encyclopedia of Behavior Management another book by Sprick that I highly recommend.
Book Description
A Primer on Nonmarket Valuation is unique in its clear descriptions of the most commonly used nonmarket valuation techniques and their implementation. Individuals working for government agencies, attorneys involved with natural resource damage assessments, graduate students, and others will appreciate the non-technical and practical tone of this book.
The first section of the book provides the context and theoretical foundation of nonmarket valuation, along with practical data issues.
The middle two sections of the
Primer describe the major stated and revealed nonmarket valuation techniques. For each technique, the steps involved in implementation are laid out and described. Both practitioners of nonmarket valuation and those who are new to the field will come away from these methods chapters with a thorough understanding of how to design, implement, and analyze a nonmarket valuation study.
The concluding section takes stock of the usefulness of nonmarket valuation, highlighting chapters on benefit transfer, the role of nonmarket valuation in real decisions about natural resources, and where nonmarket valuation is headed in the future.
As a companion to
A Primer on Nonmarket Valuation, a website has been developed, http://www.fs.fed.us/nonmarketprimerdata/. This website includes downloadable datasets for each of the techniques described in the
Primer, as well as links to published journal articles and reports based on the data. The website also provides an opportunity for students to estimate models using the data.

Book Description
Fed by media fascination with super heavyweights like George Foreman, the perception of boxers as oversized guys with oversized muscles is simply wrong. For every weight class, strength must be carefully balanced with the ideal physique. In truth, boxer training produces a body perfectly balanced for strength, shape, speed, and stamina.
The author traveled the world talking to top boxers about how they train for peak performance. Their workouts will help reshape the reader's body, and the short bios and quotes from legendary favorites will inspire readers to take their workout to the next level.
This one-of-a-kind approach to the world of boxing offers readers proven tips on balancing their own physique. Want to build more strength? Follow the workout of heavyweights like Ali. Need to slim down but don't want to lose muscle? Try the program of middleweight Fernando Vargas. Want to go all out for the ultimate physical fitness? Then try to keep up with the training of pound-for-pound legend Roy Jones Jr.

A quick read.......2007-05-18
As a boxing fan, I wanted to check this book out to see the workout ideas of the great boxers. To be honest, the glimpses into their training regimes are fairly short and repetitive. I would have liked a bit more on even just one boxer but the author did give his own training routine and some good tips.
The pictures were pretty good in the book. A quick read.
Well laid out - worhwhile.......2007-01-09
book is very well laid out with workouts from all the champs and details of their personal training schedule and nutrition program. Excellent for the new boxer or the experienced boxer looking to vary their workout schedule. Lots of great pictures.

knockout book........2006-07-13
great book. ive read loads of boxing books, but this has a different read altogether. i loved it. shane, miami
Boring.......2006-05-09
This is not at all what might be expected. The book is filled with pictures, the same 10 or so interview questions and a list of workout routines that vary, slightly, with each athlete. There is no rationale included in the benefits or strategy of each boxer's workout or routine. There is very little here that would be of use or interest to anyone interested in learning.

And You Don't Own This, Why?.......2006-05-18
Chances are, you (like me) got a degree from your state's teaching school and then began the first day of class with a visage similar to a deer in headlights. Heavens, why in the world didn't they prepare me for all of this stuff that I thought they should know by now?! (i.e. How to leave the room quietly, turn in homework appropriately, take notes when I write them on the board). Well, get over it already; you get to teach it.
This book provides a framework for helping you define and teach your classroom expectations. It can be implemented school wide (you have no idea how great it is for everyone when it is implemented); however, I use it as the lone teacher in my school (self contained Behavior Disorders Classroom) and let me tell you-I'm loving it.
If it works in my room. . . you get the idea.
Once you have clearly defined your expectations, classroom management becomes much more fluid and you can do what you were hired to do. . .you know, teach.
Get your principals to buy it for you and get some training. It rocks.

Forget NASCAR - Bring on the Open Wheelers !.......2007-01-19
For those outside the loop of racing, NASCAR garners a great deal of attention. Lost in all the attention paid to that series is a great style of racing collectively known as "open wheel" or "Champ Car." The series has evolved over the years but one thing has always remained. The races are fast, exciting and very competitive. How exciting? Put 800+ horsepower in a 1,600lb car that stands at knee level and enjoy the fun! If you are a fan - new or old - this series from Autocourse is a must-have. Autocourse started doing yearbooks 40+ years ago for the Formula One Grand Prix series and they have grown to include Champ Cars. They offer a tremendous amount of detail about the teams, drivers, cars, technical advances, etc. They also showcase the support series and the up-and-coming drivers in them. Each race is covered in detail with all qualifying times and finishing spots as well as highlights of the event itself. Photography is 100% incredible. That's another point. I enjoy doing my own photography and sometimes it's easy to lose track of things, especially if you don't get the film developed for a while. This book offers tremendous resource materials for someone maintaining photo albums of the events themselves. Basically, if you have a question about this style of racing, you'll find it in this book.
A must have for every CART fan!.......1999-04-15
This book is awesome!! Great pics and insightful commentary. It details each team that competed, each race that was run, and features a spotlight of the editor's "Top 10 Drivers".
CART fans - show this book to anyone who doesn't understand why we love this series so much, and you will win a convert :-)

Don't blame the manga.......2007-08-02
I agree with the other reviewer about the five year jump, but don't blame the author or the series for this odd 'chapter'
If you have read the series Rin!, you will get an explaination similar to what is going on here. The author and artist designed the story, but the publisher forces them to make certain changes to fit their publications. In this case, they weren't allowed to include that last chapter with volume 2.
Therefore, it ended in volume 3. It would have been nice if they could have included, for the bonus stories, extras about the title story but instead they included a couple of different romantic stories. 1 about a bad girl posing as a good girl just to get a certain guy. The 2nd story is about a guy and a girl pretending not to like each other too well, yet the girl is in love with the guy and wishes she knew if he likes her just as much. After hitting her head, the girl can suddenly hear what people think (including a rooster).
Ok, but not what I expected .......2007-05-11
I expected this to be a book long continuation of the story between Elle and Kazuki. Right when it got to the good point, BAM there is a time jump of 5 years later and Kazuki and Ruo are in the ring fighting. Then, that's the end of the story. It didn't even go 1/3rd of the way into the book. There was no build up. There was no intrigue. There was no relationship building. It was just over.
Suddenly, a new story starts up with totally different characters, different situation, and absolutely no connection to the original story.
What in the world was that? And not only that, but it's just a short story too. Another 1/3rd into the book, a third story starts up. Totally different characters, situation, everything.
I was totally disappointed. I feel like I got jipped. The author built up this great suspense, interesting characters, then just ended it abruptly. Even the summary on the back of the book doesn't hint that the Elle/Kazuki story is only 1/3rd of this book.
If you enjoyed the first 2 volumes, I would recommend not buying this one. Using your own imagination as to how the story ends would be better than this let down.
Book Description
Among the legendary athletes of the 1920s, the unquestioned halcyon days of sports, stands Gene Tunney, the boxer who upset Jack Dempsey in spectacular fashion, notched a 77—1 record as a prizefighter, and later avenged his sole setback (to a fearless and highly unorthodox fighter named Harry Greb). Yet within a few years of retiring from the ring, Tunney willingly receded into the background, renouncing the image of jock celebrity that became the stock in trade of so many of his contemporaries. To this day, Gene Tunney’s name is most often recognized only in conjunction with his epic “long count” second bout with Dempsey.
In Tunney, the veteran journalist and author Jack Cavanaugh gives an account of the incomparable sporting milieu of the Roaring Twenties, centered around Gene Tunney and Jack Dempsey, the gladiators whose two titanic clashes transfixed a nation. Cavanaugh traces Tunney’s life and career, taking us from the mean streets of Tunney’s native Greenwich Village to the Greenwich, Connecticut, home of his only love, the heiress Polly Lauder; from Parris Island to Yale University; from Tunney learning fisticuffs as a skinny kid at the knee of his longshoreman father to his reign atop boxing’s glamorous heavyweight division.
Gene Tunney defied easy categorization, as a fighter and as a person. He was a sex symbol, a master of defensive boxing strategy, and the possessor of a powerful, and occasionally showy, intellect–qualities that prompted the great sportswriters of the golden age of sports to portray Tunney as “aloof.” This intelligence would later serve him well in the corporate world, as CEO of several major companies and as a patron of the arts. And while the public craved reports of bad blood between Tunney and Dempsey, the pair were, in reality, respectful ring adversaries who in retirement grew to share a sincere lifelong friendship–with Dempsey even stumping for Tunney’s son, John, during the younger Tunney’s successful run for Congress.
Tunney offers a unique perspective on sports, celebrity, and popular culture in the 1920s. But more than an exciting and insightful real-life tale, replete with heads of state, irrepressible showmen, mobsters, Hollywood luminaries, and the cream of New York society, Tunney is an irresistible story of an American underdog who forever changed the way fans look at their heroes.
Customer Reviews:
Good Book.......2007-08-25
I really enjoyed this book.
The only reason I didnt give it 5 stars was because it lacked info on the private and older Tunney.
Tunney: Boxing;s Brainiest Champ.......2007-05-21
Tunney was one of boxing's most underrated and unappreciated champions. Jack Cavanaugh did an excellent job writing about this renaissance man's remarkable life and of boxing scene in the first three decades of the 20th century. Of particular interest was the information of how black boxers were treated in that era. Tunney's life and times were thoroughly researched by Cavanaugh. (I assumed that Dempsey was always a very popular champion...not so, he attained hero status after his fights with Tunney.) The book could've been more succinctly edited - some of the subject matter was often repeated, but it was an easy and informative read.
A MUST for boxing fans, but others will enjoy too.......2007-03-29
If you're a boxing fan, you MUST read TUNNEY: BOXING'S
BRAINIEST CHAMP AND HIS UPSET OF THE GREAT JACK
DEMPSY by Jack Cavanaugh . . . fans of other sports and
history buffs will enjoy it, too.
It is the tale of Gene Tunney, the poetry-quoting fighter, who
always was overshadowed by Dempsey--even though he
beat him twice . . . but what made the book so enjoyable
was that it featured tales of many other fighters of
the era, including the amazing Harry Greb who fought
for several years with just one eye . . . in addition, it
gave me a greater appreciation of the role played by
sports (and boxing in particular) in the 1920s and 30s.
I also got a kick out of finding the story behind such
famous quotes as the following:
* Even Flynn seemed surprised at the knockout. "Well, it was this
way," he explained some years after his most notable victory. "I hit
him with a one-two. But just put it down that I didn't exactly knock
Dempsey out. He just forgot to duck."
* As he had feared, Dempsey was called on to say a few words. Though
he had already appeared in movies and on the vaudeville stage, Dempsey
was not comfortable speaking in public. But he handled himself well and
seemed to win over his audience. "I feel like the Irishman who was asked
to do something special for the guests at a very fancy affair," Dempsey
said to the assembled guests. "The Irishman said, 'I can't sing, I can't
dance, and I can't tell a story. But I will tell you what I will do. I'll fight
anybody in the house.' "
* Several days after the fight, Dempsey apologized to Firpo for hitting
him as soon as he got up, claiming he was so dazed he didn't know
what he was doing. To which Firpo, likable and with a wry sense of
humor--and whose varied business interests would make him one
of the richest men in South America-replied, "There were three of
us in the ring, Jack, so if you didn't know what you were doing,
why didn't you hit the referee?"
I was most impressed by the author's thorough job of
research . . . only the ending of the book left me a bit disappointed,
in that it didn't contain very much information about Tunney's life
after he left the ring . . . that was probably because he was
such a private individual; however, he was one great fighter that
might now finally get some credit that failed to come his way
when he was active in the ring.
But what about Gene?.......2007-02-25
A biography of Gene Tunney was long overdue. He was possibly the most underrated heavyweight champion, with boxing skills in the same league as Robinson and Ali. Although this is a fine, well-researched book on this era of boxing, similar to "The Long Count", the majority of the time is spent on the thorough biographies of his opponents (i.e. Dempsey, Greb, etc). and very little on is own. It's as though the author is filling in space. Want to know anything in depth about his childhood, meeting and the blossoming courtship of Polly Lauder, their son John, (the former senator)? Forget it.
Excellent read.......2007-01-31
Great history behind Tunney and Dempsey. The reader ends up liking/admiring both guys. Never heard of Harry Greb either and enjoyed learning about him. Only complaint is that Cavanaugh doesn't go into enough detail after the second fight in Chicago. I would have enjoyed reading more about their lives after their boxing careers.
