5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book.......2007-05-12

Mr. Lindsay has compiled a thoroughly researched, well written tome, that is perhaps the best book on canine behavior I have ever read. Readers who enjoy detailed manuals respecting the reader's attention span, intelligence, education, literacy, and quest for knowledge will cherish Applied Dog Behavior and Training. The book is sufficient as a textbook at the graduate university level. For readers interested in learning intricately about the developmental history of domestic dogs, ontogenetics, neurophysiology, sensory physiology, canine psychology, learning theory, and training/conditioning theory this book is nonpareil. Moreover, the book is insightfully organized and formatted so it as easy to read as possible given the depth and breadth of the text and concomitant illustrations.

Nevertheless, unfortunately, Mr. Lindsay's book is not for everyone. In fact, it is probably appropriate for very few pet professionals and even fewer pet owners. The book is written tantamount to the materials utilized within a Master's or PhD program in biology, psychology, zoology or animal behavior. Although I am enthralled with the book, I believe most persons will be fatigued by the amount and complexity of information.

I did not buy this book for myself. My daughter-in-law has a kennel and needed several books to recertify as a trainer. Sorry

5 out of 5 stars An Incredible Resource for Trainers & Others.......2007-04-09

The first thing to know about this book is that it is not an "easy read," but more of a textbook. That said, it is invaluable reading for professional trainers--in fact, I am on the faculty and advisory board of the Companion Animal Sciences Institute and Lindsay's books are required reading in many of our courses. The Handbook of Applied Dog Behavior and Training should appeal to canine professionals as well as anyone looking for an in-depth analysis of canine origins, neurobiology and behavior. This is the first of Lindsay's comprehensive three-volume set. It begins with the origins of dogs, covers the neurobiology of behavior and learning, and sensory abilities of dogs. The behavior section goes to great lengths describing classical and operant conditioning, the effect of aversives on behavior, and much more. A multitude of fascinating studies are referenced throughout the book. Again, although this book is more technical and dense than most on the subject, it is an invaluable resource that you will find yourself referring back to again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Immense knowledgebase of info on K9 behavior.......2003-09-18

I got a new puppy about 6 months ago. This was just about a 2 year process that involved searching out a specific breed that fit my personality and lifestyle and reading piles (Probably $500 worth) of books about raising puppies, training, specific breed books, etc. Mainly because I have always been deathly afraid of owning that unruly dog would be a nightmare to have around the house.

Of the 20 books that I have, this book is by far the most in depth and well researched of all. Most books on the subject of dogs in general are short overviews that should take care of some specific needs, such as potty training, obedience, tricks, etc. This book has a culmination of 100+ years of scientific research and other case studies of not only dogs but of the behavior mentally and physically of other creatures and how they apply to dogs. There is so much information to soak in, its incredible. I read through it occasionally had to sit back in awe thinking about what i've just read and how many things make sense now.

I seriously think that most books will get 90% of dog owners by without a problem. This book is for those 10%, or breeders, trainers who need to have that extra level of knowledge. I'd compare it to needing a cupfull of knowledge and receiving 5 gallons instead.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2000-10-13

The author succesfully tries to offer a thorough and detailed view of what is known and what isn't known about dog behavior and learning. His approach is above all scientific, which doesn't mean he avoids phenomena like ESP etc., nor does he simply give a description of the autorities' viewpoints. Lindsay also carefully analyses everything commonly accepted by laymen and experts, without resorting to emotional arguments. His systematic and straightforward 'nothing to hide' approach as well as his concern to include all practices and opinions certainly makes this book an authoritative study which counterbalances a lot of 'extreme' books on dog training (like Jean Donaldsons controversial book 'the culture clash' or the Koehler books).

For everything said in the book, scientific research and logical reasoning serves as basis, and sentimentality doesn't get a chance. Lindsay clearly stresses the reasons behind behavioral tactics and leaves the choice to the reader, providing all scientific facts necessary to support your decision. His view on the use of aversives is the most enlightening and waterproof explication I've read on why, how and when to use it -- or not...

Lindsay concentrates a lot on theoretical models to understand all kinds of phenomena. He never annoyed by giving too much information. Monuments of psychology like Skinner and Thorndike are equally critically analyzed as less famous men and at all time Lindsay remains consistent in his application of a thorough scientific approach to clearify and explain.

It isn't a cheap book, but it certainly lived up to my (high) expectations. The reference section at the end of each chapter provides a good means of exploring more studies and Lindsay doesn't hesitate to give suggestion for further reading. He acknowledges without hesitation the accomplishments of other people without idealizing them (he criticizes Skinners and Thorndikes view on punishment etc.).

I think it will take a long time before a more open and thorough book on dog behavior will appear. Therefore, if you want a book that gives a complete and detailed account of what is known on dog behavior and that provides a solid basis to expand your knowledge (even very rare phenomena are treated in detail), I would certainly recommend this book. The only negative thing about it I could think of, is the price -- and even then...

5 out of 5 stars Silicon Processing for the VLSI Era.......2004-11-18

"Silicon Processing for the VLSI Era" is by far the most authoritative guide to semiconductor processing and nano-fabrication in existence. Practical processing techniques as well as their underlying fundamental principles are thoroughly covered in detail. This book has been indispensable to me during my graduate education and has the solution to just about every fabrication problem I have encountered in my 5+ years of experience. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is trying to build a semiconductor device or just curious about how such things are done.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-10-01

I was forced to use this book as an undergrad. It was torture. Runyan and Bean ( Semiconductor Integrated Circuit Processing Technology by W.R. Runyan, K.E. Bean) and Ghandi (don't have title handy) are both much better and easier to read.

3 out of 5 stars Just overview.......2003-09-22

I don't like this series. Vol 1, 2 were used when I was in University

The series just gave you overview. It won't explain in details. You have to research on your own. Since silicon processing changes in very fast pace, these books may already be out of date (almost 4 years ago). But it is still good reference.

Basically, this book is just collection of the technical papers. I can find some articles are almost 'word by word' copied from the reference Journals and technical papers.

Neverless, it still saves a lot of time to go to the library and get the journals (This may be the only good things I can find. THe journals are not cheap. IEEE subscripts for site is over $20K. There are more than IEEE journals in these books). When I have to get journals in library, it took 'long time' to search and go to the shelf to get the journal I want.

However, I won't be very impressed in the book. As I said, this book is just summary of the reference journals. Sometimes (if not all the time), I can find the articles in the book are almost 'word by word' copied from the technical journals without any further explanation. I really doubt anyone knows the "details of physics" behind. But in the industrial, most people just trial and error, very little physics behind. I would say nobody cares too much physics, it took too much time to research and it is too difficult to keep up with new technilogies.

5 out of 5 stars THE best set of technical references in this area.......2002-05-09

In my 25 years of semiconductor process development I have never come across such a complete and in-depth collection of device and process knowledge in a single place. Years ago we needed to spend many hours with the journals to extract the requisite information to supplement our laboratory efforts. These volumes synthesize the basics with the most modern techniques now employed in advanced technologies. In addition, many subtle processing difficulties are addressed as well which will be much appreciated by the researcher. Through the years I have purchased in excess of 100 text references and none comes as close to these in the total knowledge contained within. These volumes are intended for the researchers and engineers working in this field yet they are so very well written and easy to comprehend that any one with such an interest in this field can understand them. Study these volumes completely.

5 out of 5 stars Silicon Processing for the VLSI Era.......2000-07-20

This book provides an outstanding presentation of Silicon processing technology that is technically current, rich in detail, and most importantly, factually correct. The new edition of this book appears to have been completely rewritten, and covers every important area of Silicon processing in a comprehensive manner. I especially enjoyed that fact that in each chapter of the book the basic principles underlying a technology are explained first, and these explanations are then integrated into descriptions of the relevant technology (i.e. PVD, CVD, CMP etc.).

The two Lithography sections are beautifully done, and contain lucid explanations of concepts that I have not seen anywhere else.

For anyone who is seriously interested in semiconductor manufacturing, this book is a "must have". No other volume even comes close to being this comprehensive.

Part bildungsroman, part horse opera, part meditation on courage and loyalty, this beautifully crafted novel won the National Book Award in 1992. The plot is simple enough. John Grady Cole, a 16-year-old dispossessed Texan, crosses the Rio Grande into Mexico in 1949, accompanied by his pal Lacey Rawlins. The two precocious horsemen pick up a sidekick--a laughable but deadly marksman named Jimmy Blevins--encounter various adventures on their way south and finally arrive at a paradisiacal hacienda where Cole falls into an ill-fated romance. Readers familiar with McCarthy's Faulknerian prose will find the writing more restrained than in Suttree and Blood Meridian. Newcomers will be mesmerized by the tragic tale of John Grady Cole's coming of age.

      Book Description

Now a major motion picture from Columbia Pictures starring Matt Damon, produced by Mike Nichols, and directed by Billy Bob Thornton.

The national bestseller and the first volume in Cormac McCarthy's Border Trilogy, All the Pretty Horses is the tale of John Grady Cole, who at sixteen finds himself at the end of a long line of Texas ranchers, cut off from the only life he has ever imagined for himself.  With two companions, he sets off for Mexico on a sometimes idyllic, sometimes comic journey to a place where dreams are paid for in blood.  Winner of the National Book Award for Fiction.

5 out of 5 stars A Super Modern Western Adventure!.......2007-09-22

Note: I made some Mormon reader angry over my reviews of books written by Mormons out to prove the Book of Mormon, and that person has been slamming my reviews. This review of "All the Pretty Horses" is pretty good. I didn't want to ruin the story by telling too much. Your "helpful" votes are appreciated.

This memorable novel caught me and wouldn't let go. Around 1948, two teenage boys from Texas ride their horses down into Mexico. From there, the adventure begins. For a while, they live at a cattle ranch where the one boy falls in love with the wealthy rancher's daughter.

      Highly recommended.

McCarthy is a powerful writer, and his novel "Blood Meridian" is the most powerful novel I ever read (see my review where I compare his prose to that of Conrad).

      Blood Meridian:

"That night they rode through a region electric and wild where strange shapes of soft blue fire ran over the metal of the hoses' trappings and the wagonwheels rolled in hoops of fire and little shapes of pale blue light came to perch in the ears of the horses and in the beards of the men. All night sheetlightning quaked and sourceless to the west beyond the midnight thunderheads, making a bluish day of the distant desert, the mountains on the sudden skyline stark and black and lived like a land of some other order out there whose true geology was not stone but fear. The thunder moved up from the southwest and lightning lit the desert all about them, blue and barren, great clanging reaches ordered out of the absolute night like some demon kingdom summoned up or changeling land that come the day would leave them neither trace nor smoke nor ruin more than any troubling dream."

Compare above lines to similar lines in "The Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad:

"We could have fancied ourselves the first of men taking possession of an accursed inheritance, to be subdued at the cost of profound anguish and of excessive toil. But suddenly, as we struggled round a bend, there would be a glimpse of rush walls, of peaked grass-roofs, a burst of yells, a whirl of black limbs, a mass of hands clapping, of feet stamping, of bodies swaying, , of eyes rolling, under the droop of heavy and motionless foliage. The steamer toiled along slowly on the edge of a black and incomprehensible frenzy. The prehistoric man was cursing us, praying to us, welcoming us--who could tell" we were cut off from the comprehension of our surroundings; we glided past like phantoms, wondering and secretly appalled, as sane men would be before an enthusiastic outbreak in a madhouse. We could not understand because we were too far and could not remember because we were travelling in the night of first ages, of those ages that are gone, leaving hardly a sign--and no memories."
Blood Meridian: Or the Evening Redness in the West

      4 out of 5 stars Cowboys!~.......2007-09-18

This book is short but really interesting. Anybody can read it quickly. The only confusing part is that the book has many quotes but it doesn't say who is saying it. This is why sometimes you have to think twice about who said this and that. The lovestory is not like any typical teenage lovestory- in one word it is DIFFERENT.

5 out of 5 stars Part "High Plains Drifter" and Part "Romeo and Juliet.".......2007-09-10

Cormac McCarthy was born in Rhode island and grew up in Tennessee, but now lives in Tesuque, New Mexico. He is viewed by many as one of the more unusual and most talented of the current American writers. For example, Harold Bloom has written a number of things about McCarthy.

Some describe Mccarthy as a loner. Coincidentally, that is what one might call the protagonist in the present novel: John Grady. The novel is set in the 1950s time period and Grady is a young man or mature boy caught between the horse and buggy days of the old west and the new west connected by modern highways. Grady has a fascination for horses and is a talented rider.

The story is about two men who ride their horses into Mexico and work as ranch hands in Mexico. It is part love story and part a tale of justice and adventure, i.e.: Grady meets a woman in Mexico. The protagonist is a sympathetic character and most readers will find it to be a compelling read.

Some might not like it for the prose. The prose is complicated by design. I thought the first thirty pages were sometimes a bit awful but effective as well, but then McCarthy lightens up a bit on his writing. He reminded me a bit of the opening of Farewell to Arms where Hemingway tries to set the mood through the use of prose: Hemingway uses a narrative of the natural surroundings. McCarthy uses expressions such as "the sun sat blood red and elliptic," and these seem out of place when compared to the spartan dialogue of a father and son talking over a breakfast of eggs and coffee.

Also, McCarthy uses what is called polysyndeton, or the use of several conjunctions in close succession, especially where some might be omitted. It is a stylistic scheme used to slow down the tempo. As pointed out by others, polysyndeton is used extensively in the King James Version of the Bible. For example:

"And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark." Genesis 7:22-24

One of the best parts in the book - and exceptional writing by the way - is where he describes a dream in the middle of the book about horses running free on a plain and he does so in 18 continuous lines with no punctuation.

So, this is based on some universal themes, set in Texas and Mexico, and has some interesting and complicated prose. Once you get passed page 30 to 50, it is a novel that is hard to put down. I read most of the novel in an evening.

Highly recommended page turner: 5 stars.

      5 out of 5 stars A wonderful reading experience.......2007-09-09

This was one of the best reading experiences Ive ever had. What was most important to me was how true to the how people of this lifestyle actually are. I grew up in this type of atmosphere and its a big part of who I am even though it no longer defines me on a daily basis. Working with horses is a lifestyle. It what you live and breathe. McCarthy captures that. It had such an effect on me and took me back to a life I miss so much. Enjoy this book.

2 out of 5 stars All the Pretty Horses.......2007-08-06

I was disappointed in the style of this book. I had just read "Water for Elephants" and was blown away. The reviews I read lead me to this author and the above book. The story line is good however he is slow to develop it. I appreciate discriptive text however a paragraph (or more) it seems to descibbe a dry river bed is a bit much especially when there is one on every page. Alas the last 1/3 of the book will go unread. And I will search for the next W.F.E.

        Book Description

Barbara Bush is certainly among the most popular First Ladies ever to live in the White House. Politics aside, people worldwide have come to admire her wit, her candor and compassion, as well as her unswerving devotion to her husband and children.

In her memoir, Mrs. Bush for the first time gives readers a very private look at a life lived in the public eye for more than twenty-five years. She begins with a compelling portrait of her early years, including: growing up in Rye, New York, and meeting George Bush; life as a young bride and mother, moving far away from home to West Texas; and the almost unbearable pain of losing a child.

With contemporary American history as the backdrop, Mrs. Bush remembers the shock of learning that her fiancé has been shot down in the Pacific during World War II; the disbelief when a black friend is refused service in a Southern restaurant in the 1950s; and the fear when she is caught in the middle of a student protest march in the 1960s.

She recounts her years in public life, from first moving to Washington when George Bush was elected to Congress; to her experience living in New York as the wife of the Ambassador to the United Nations and in China as wife of the U.S. envoy. She talks candidly about the ups and downs of three presidential campaigns and describes her role as the wife of the Vice President, culminating in the climactic White House years.

Drawing upon excerpts from her diary, which she has compiled for more than thirty years, Mrs. Bush takes us behind the scenes of the Persian Gulf conflict and the end of the Cold War. She talks about both the Bushes' struggle to overcome Graves' disease and how she faced the controversy that erupted at Wellesley College before her commencement speech.

Through the friendships she developed over the years with world leaders and their spouses, we meet and get to know the Gorbachevs, the Thatchers, the Mitterrands, the Mubaraks, and many others. And she tells us why she threw so much of her energy and compassion behind the important cause of making more Americans literate.

This memoir includes hundreds of the funny, often self-deprecating, and occasionally touching anecdotes for which Mrs. Bush is well known: surprising a rat while swimming in the White House pool; accidentally stomping on Boris Yeltsin's foot under the table during a state dinner; wearing a $29 pair of shoes for her husband's inaugural ball.

She also talks about the disappointments of the 1992 presidential campaign and the joys of rediscovering private life, including driving and cooking again for the first time in twelve years.

This is a warm and funny memoir that will charm Mrs. Bush's millions of admirers and earn her many more.

        2 out of 5 stars Tugboat Babs.......2005-09-06

Tugboat Babs has finally written her memoir. She is in the weird situation of having been married to one president and having spawned another. She is most informative on the Bush's early years together -- although she provides very little information on the family's connection with the Medellin cartel. She is also mum on Laura's vehicular homicide conviction.

All in all, it is a tale to rank with that of the Sopranos.

        2 out of 5 stars Boring.......2005-05-23

While I admire the Bush presidencies, I found this book boring. It is written as a catalog of events. There seemed not to be any central theme or purpose in the writing other than that it happened. That made it about as appealing as if a cook went into the kitchen and put every available ingredient into one pot to make soup.

        5 out of 5 stars Barbasra Bush: A Memoir.......2005-04-20

What a poitive, gritty, yet appreciative woman hlding dear the basic human values of life that hold our country together. Truly, she was one of our greatest first ladies--she put "first things first," meaning her family and husband first. A must read for all American women who think raising a strong family isn't worth it!! What a payoff! When walking through the George Bush Library at Texas A&M, etched on a wall is George Sr.'s comment that his greatest blessing in life is "that his children still want to come home" Now I understand why.

        5 out of 5 stars A warm, fuzzy read.......2004-09-10

I'll admit up front that I am a fan of both 41 and 43--and have always admired "Bar". That being said, I loved the book. Mrs. Bush has such a gentle, warm way about her and this is certainly reflected in her writing. She is able to weave together the story of her life (including some not-so-wonderful moments) with wit, warmth and clarity--all without ever resorting to name-calling, self-pity or egotism. This book is a refreshing change of pace and should be taken for what it is: a remarkable woman's life story told from her (very sunny) point of view.

5 out of 5 stars A Warm and Interesting Look.......2004-02-11

After reading this book, her husband's second book, and finally her second memoir, I did have a profound respect for her dignity, love for her family, and stamina. This book was an easy read and was absolutely fascinating to go along on exotic trips and learning about the side kick's day to day existence as wife to President. The book made me admire the Bush's as a couple more, the love for their kids and each other, and their principles, even if I did not agree with all of the latter.
