Book Description
The FUNDAMENTALS OF MATHEMATICS, 9th Edition offers a comprehensive review of all basic mathematics concepts and prepares students for further coursework. The clear exposition and the consistency of presentation make learning arithmetic accessible for all. Key concepts are presented in section objectives and further defined within the context of How and Why; providing a strong foundation for learning. The predominant emphasis of the book focuses on problem-solving, skills, concepts, and applications based on "real world" data, with some introductory algebra integrated throughout. The authors feel strongly about making the connection between mathematics and the modern, day-to-day activities of students. This textbook is suitable for individual study or for a variety of course formats: lab, self-paced, lecture, group or combined formats. Though the mathematical content of FUNDAMENTALS OF MATHEMATICS is elementary, students using this textbook are often mature adults, bringing with them adult attitudes and experiences and a broad range of abilities. Teaching elementary content to these students, therefore, is effective when it accounts for their distinct and diverse adult needs. Using Fundamentals of Math meets three needs of students which are: students must establish good study habits and overcome math anxiety; students must see connections between mathematics and the modern day-to-day world of adult activities; and students must be paced and challenged according to their individual level of understanding.

Real Application Clusters (RAC) and the Grid architecture are Oracle's strategy for scaling out enterprise systems to cope with bigger workloads and more users. Many books limit themselves by conceptualizing and theorizing about RAC technology, but this book is the first to portray implementing and administering an Oracle 10g RAC system in a Linux environment. This book features basic concepts underlying Linux and Oracle RAC, design strategies, hardware procurement and configuration, and many other topics.
The RAC-specific technologies described include configuration of the interconnect, OCFS, ASM, Cluster Ready Services, and Grid Control. The Oracle features RMAN and Data Guard are also discussed, along with available hardware options. The authors include practical examples and configuration information, so that upon reading this book, you'll be armed with the information you need to build an Oracle RAC database on Linux, whether it is on a single laptop or a 64-node Itanium cluster.

Expelled from Botswana for writing Cry of the Kalahari, the Owenses set off across Africa. They settled in Zambia, where they soon found their peace shattered by the gunfire of elephant poachers. This is the story of the couple's battle to save the elephants and their own lives.

"By telling the truth...they incur a measure of personal and professional risk;.......2007-09-04
"...by not telling it, we all risk much, much more."-The Owenses
Poaching is a big problem in Africa. There are laws against it, but the villagers are very poor, the people are hungry and in many, many countries of Africa, the governments are either corrupt or are unstable. This story takes place in northeastern Zambia near Tanzania. The story begins with the Owenses returning to Botswana to continue their research into predator-prey relationships. They find some of their familiar, furry, thin friends in the desert wilderness only to almost immediately be apprehended by the authorities and get kicked out of the country because their research conflicts with the government's plans to develop cattle ranches in the Kalahari desert. They wander aimlessly through the African skies and wind up in Zambia where they soon have a new mission to stop elephant poaching which has nearly decimated the elephant population there.
I love how both Mark and Delia write. Their descriptions of Africa sometimes remind me of Isak Dinesen's Out of Africa. I've read all their books now and they really are very hard to put down. Their work in Zambia takes a toll on their health as it did in Botswana, but in slightly different ways. In the Kalahari, they were in no man's land and went for many months without seeing people. In Zambia, there are small villages nearer to them where they can restock their very meager supplies. The toll on their bodies this time around though is intense because in declaring their mission to stop poaching, they trigger a violent response from the poachers armed with their Kalashnikovs (AK-47's). Mark gets so upset when he sees animals senselessly slaughtered whether they be hundreds of thousands of wildebeest in Botswana or elephants in Zambia. There's a lot to be found in their books about animal behavior and social organization. With elephants, the females stay in their natal clans and males migrate out to mate and congregate. The poaching, however, takes a toll on their social structure since the elephants with the largest tusks are the sexually mature animals and many orphaned elephants roam the wilderness alone without a group to call their own.
The Owens' take to task educating the villagers and teaching them new industries, new methods of agriculture so that they are more subsistent. It takes a decade to finally begin to make an impact on transforming their society and removing the incentives to poach. There are several attempts on their lives, but you'll have quite the time in Mark's bush piloting, air force policing of Zambia's Luangwa National Park.
Wonders of the Wild.......2006-11-04
This book is laden with fascinating information on African Wildlife and how to survive as human and animal in harsh conditions. Excellent read.
A riveting, disturbing story of war with poachers.......2005-06-01
Wildlife researchers and conservationists Delia and Mark Owens have spent much of their lives since 1974 in the African bush, first in the Kalahari Desert from which came their best seller "Cry of the Kalahari" and then in the North Luangwa Valley in Zambia, the setting of this 1992 book.
The Owens' passion leads them to risk their lives routinely. In searching for a suitable camp in North Luangwa they set out in an ancient truck with no radio and inadequate gear. After a grueling trek that would have sent sane mortals packing for home they separate so Mark can fly his Cessna to a site that "would make Cessna's insurance company shudder" while Delia makes the two-day trip alone with the old truck and a trailer over trackless hilly, bushy, gully-filled flood-plain terrain. Tracking animals they are constantly walking smack into a startled lion or buffalo or cornered elephant.
But the real danger comes from people. "The Eye of the Elephant," while filled with wildlife anecdotes and tidbits of information about elephants and lions, is really about the poaching war the Owens conducted on behalf of the besieged North Luangwa elephants.
The poachers are villagers, many armed with AK47s, backed by the local government and assisted by the corrupt and underequipped local game guards. The Owens' weapons are education, cottage industry projects financed by the Owens Foundation for Wildlife Conservation and the Cessna.
The battle starts genially with children exclaiming over magazine pictures and their parents joining sewing circles and carpentry workshops. But it quickly escalates until Mark drives Delia from him with his obsession for highly dangerous and only modestly effective night flights, and the poachers organize an assassination squad to rid themselves of the Owens once and for all.
The book is organized in alternating first-person chapters between Delia and Mark. The tone is brutally honest, touching when one admits to mistakes which endanger the other, disturbing when their frank discussion of anti-poaching tactics veers from the politically correct. The Owens' care more for the animals and the landscape than the people. But since the people are there, their needs must be faced. Their singlemindedness will outrage some, but their strong personalities and sheer stamina will awe almost everyone.

EXCELLENT ADVENTURE!.......2004-06-26
I wish these authors would write more books about their adventures in Africa. Truly riveting page-turners!
Do not miss this wonderful book!.......2002-08-19
The Eye of the Elephant is a wonderful, adventurous journey into the heart and soul of Africa seen through Mark and Delia's eyes. From the very first page you are caught up in their heroic quests to protect the animals they are there to observe. In spite of the unbelievable odds against them, they persevered and put the safety and security of the highly endangered animals FIRST. The elephants in the Luanga Valley are very fortunate to have had Mark and Delia watch over them and be their heroes. I have loved Africa and the African elephant my entire life and I am so grateful for these two selfless, dedicated people who have become the protectors of our most precious wildlife. This is one of my most treasured African stories.

Book Description
Dubbed "Mr. Atomic Energy" by Congressional colleagues and friends in recognition of his 28 years as a member and 10 years as House leader of the House-Senate Joint Committee on Atomic Energy (JCAE), Democratic Congressman Chet Holifield of California's 19th Congressional District served 32 years in Congress, from 1943 through 1974, and was a powerful figure in atomic energy matters. This first biography of Holifield, in chronicling the Congressman's significant role in the development and course of U.S. atomic energy programs and policies, also serves as a history of the formative period of this new force in national and international politics. An early champion of atomic energy, Holifield's efforts contributed to the establishment of the Atomic Energy Act of 1946 and earned him a place on the JCAE. His 1949 recommendation on the H-bomb led to the development of this new weapon nine months before the Russians. An ardent proponent of public power in the 1950s, Holifield opposed the premature involvement of private industry in the development of atomic power and urged increased government participation in that area; many of his recommendations were later authorized by the Atomic Energy Commission. Holifield supported the conversion of the Hanford, Washington "N-reactor" to electricity as well as plutonium production, criticized U.S. civil defense strategy as inadequate, and championed both peaceful use of atomic energy and a "nuclear Navy." During the Nixon administration, in response to environmentalists" opposition to further atomic power development, the Congressman took the unpopular position that trade-offs between safety concerns and the public's need for increased amounts of electrical power were necessary. He also sponsored legislation that divided the AEC into the Research and Development Administration and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, a move that affected the course of atomic energy development well beyond his retirement. The first chapter is devoted to a biographical sketch of Holifield's life prior to his congressional career, while the remaining nine chapters trace his influence and contributions in atomic energy matters. The in-depth description of the Holifield Papers as well as the select bibliography will be of great value to scholars of atomic energy history. Serving as an introduction to the wide range of atomic energy topics and issues, this biography would be a significant addition to the reading lists for American history survey courses as well as being useful for seminars that have students investigate atomic energy history.

Book Description
When Mark and Delia Owens settled in a Zambian wilderness, they found the elephants and other wildlife decimated by poachers; the local villagers, who depended on the wildlife, were driven to desperate actsincluding poaching themselves. To save both people and animals, the Owenses started an innovative microlending program that lifted the villagers out of poverty and allowed the wildlife populations to recover. But the older elephants had been slaughtered for their tusks, taking with them knowledge that had been passed along to the young for generations. Left behind was social chaossingle moms, solitary orphans, rowdy gangs of young malesand a scientific mystery: how could there be so many babies and so few females old enough to be mothers? A young orphan named Gift eventually provided the clue to the remarkable scientific discovery that revealed the elephants" secret. But the poachers and ivory smugglers shifted their sights from the elephants to the Owenses, threatening their lives, raiding their camp, and finally driving them out of the country. After two decades in Africa, Mark and Delia returned to America to find social changes frighteningly similar to what they had seen among the elephants of Zambia.

Best yet.......2007-09-09
This is the grand finale of the Africa books for the Owens'. I have read all with great appreciataion for what they have done over many years, but I felt that this book was the best of all. It is the culmination of more maturity and experience of their programs and writing. I would recommend it to anyone with any interest in conservation. It is also glimpse into the human spirit when confronted with the difficult task of orchestrating the survival of both man and animal harmoniously. These are two awesome people doing great work.
GIFT.......2007-09-04
Gift is the name of a little orphaned girl elephant that the Owenses had in their neighborhood. She wandered on her own and had to learn how to eat and fend for herself without any cues or training from sisters, aunts, grandmas or her own mother who were obviously all slaughtered for their tusks and meat. Mark continues to cherry bomb the poachers, Delia continues to measure elephants' sizes and clan size, continues counting elephants before she sleeps. So this latest book by the Owenses is a continuation of Eye of the Elephant and gives you a glimpse of the people who have made a big difference in wildlife management in Africa. They wind up getting kicked out of Zambia and are now back in the States trying to increase grizzly bear numbers! I can't wait to hear what they have to say about America's wildlife and their recommendations for their management. I learned in this book that George Adamson, the real life Game Warden of Kenya of Born Free fame was killed by poachers who were smuggling ivories into Somalia. It's been a problem for half a century and still continues today. Recently 2 rare white rhinos were brought to Zambia from South Africa and one was killed, the other shot...
secrets of the savanna.......2007-08-08
I had read the owen's two previous books and really loved them. I found this one and thought well, I already know what they did so this will just be review. Well, was I wrong. It is a great book and kept me enthralled till the end. They have such a practical approach to getting the local population involved, and they have had such sucess. Anyone would love this book. It is so possitive that it just tickles your heart, and such a love story. To think they have done all this together. Wow. I gave it a 5 and would have given it 10 if I could. jeannie Clarke
Some Books are Keepers.......2006-11-04
Life in the harshest of places....Africa in the wildest wildness. If you love animals of planet earth, this is a book to read, weep and rejoice.
Wonderful sequel .......2006-09-02
Written so that you feel you are looking over their shoulders as they see and work in Africa. A bit of mystery, a cautionary tale and an inspirational love story. The book describes the obstacles they faced and the gile, resourcefulness, courage and passion they bring to their work and lives. A worthy follow-on to Cry of the Kalahari and Eye of the Elephant.

Excellent, well-written, well-illustrated reference.......2006-06-06
This is an excellent learning tool and reference. It is written very well; the instructions are concise and clear. The book is well illustrated.
I don't think this is the best book to start with if you are just learning about dynamic applications. I would suggest that you begin with Jeffrey Bardzell's Macromedia Dreamweaver MX Dynamic Applications. If you are using DW8, don't worry--it's not out of date. The tutorials in Bardzell's book will enable you to build a web site using ASP or Coldfusion. (I am using ASP).
Lucinda Dyke's book, Macromedia DW 8 Advanced, will clearly explain and reinforce what you learned with Bardzell's book. With these two books, you should have no problem building a web site with dynamic applications.
The book has one flaw: the lack of complete exercise files. The author refers to the Cafe Townsend tutorial that comes with Dreamweaver, but these files do not completely correspond with the exercises. There are additional files that you can download from the Peachpit web site, but these files are not very helpful. You will have to improvise a little to complete some of the exercises. Hopefully, the author will get some feedback encouraging her to create a more fully set of files for download.
Also, if you want to learn how to create a web site using dynamic apps, it would be helpful to have a fundamental knowledge of databases.
Excellent book; well worth the money!

Reviews Are About A Different Edition of XML For Dummies.......2007-01-11
These reviews are all very misleading as they refer to a previous edition of the book which is no longer available, the third edition of XML For Dummies. XML For Dummies, 4th edition, the book featured here, addresses many of the concerns raised in the reviews of the third edition.
Just flat out wrong sometimes.......2006-03-18
As a complete newbie to XML this was a good starter. As I got deeper into XML I found several mistakes/deficiencies in the book, and sometimes the author just flat out seemed to not know what he was talking about. For instance, the claim on page 86 that (#CDATA) is a valid DTD element content definition is flat out wrong. His description of Schema element declarations (pp. 114-115) teaches that using globals/refs is the only way to define complex elements, and is inappropriate for his example. He makes no mention of globals at all, leaving the reader confused. I have ceased to trust this book as a valid source of XML information.
For real dummies.......2005-09-15
If you want to kill your time without learning anything, this book is absolute right for you.
Horrible book.......2005-08-26
I bought this book from BarnesNoble hoping to get off to a reasonable start on learning XML. What I discovered is a
complete jumble of repeated ideas, technical jargon, incomplete explanations, and lack of examples. I have read many
"For Dummies" books in the past and they were all very good. I don't understand how this one actually made it thru to
the publisher. The "For Dummies" series must be cutting costs or undergoing new management or something. I actually
came on Amazon to warn other people about spending money on this book. And I found a whole load of people beat
me to the punch.
If you are still considering buying this book, please read this word-by-word quote taken from the very FIRST INTRODUCTORY
chapter of this book. The author is ATTEMPTING to explain what an attribute is: (An attribute is one of the most fundamental
ideas in XML. Here is his explanation.)
(Taken from Chapter ONE: XML Basics - Getting to Know XML)
"Attribute: In XML, a property associated with an XML element that's also a named characteristic of the element. An attribute
also provides additional data about an element, independent of element content."
Uhh...okay there. I've programmed in several other languages before and this explanation just plain sucks for someone
who's never written a word of XML. It sounds like something I read out of my CS textbook when I was in college.
Anyways, if this excerpt from the book isn't enough to convince you what a piece of garbage it is, maybe the
40+ reviews posted earlier than mine will.
Guided Tour of XML Tech.......2005-08-17
If terms like "the new web" and acronyms like RSS, SOAP and SMIL are showing up on your "need to know" radar screen with increasing frequency; if you're not quite sure what the alphabet soup is all about and haven't a clue where to begin; if you've heard the XML hype but aren't certain what, if anything, it has to offer you, this book is for you.
Written in the signature tongue-in-cheek "For Dummies" style, "XML for Dummies" guides the reader on a tour of XML and its satellites. It covers the basics in enough depth for you to grasp its power and possibilities without overwhelming with too much detail. Its goal is to introduce the reader to the XML family; clarify its parts, their purpose and how they fit together; identify software tools for dealing with these technologies; and provide extensive resources for further education. Its global approach succeeds in these.
XML alone is not difficult. The authors go to some length to lower the intimidation factor by clearly explaining XML basics and following up with an introduction to DTDs, Schemas and XSL(T). They don't make the mistake of trying to turn a beginner into an XML pro, however, and wisely provide a list of links and books which cover these subjects--which are more complex than XML itself--in depth. The book is extensively cross-referenced, so if you find yourself trying to remember a particular point covered in an earlier chapter, there is sure to be a helpful cross-reference note within the explanatory text.
For the more business-oriented, there are step-by-step instructions on producing XML documents with the MS Office 2003 suite. Those who are primarily web-oriented can skip these sections, however, without any loss of continuity.
I came to the book with a basic understanding of XML and DTDs (though that certainly isn't necessary), but I had a lot of questions about some of XML's other aspects: Schemas, XSL(T), XForms, RSS, SOAP, etc. The book answered those questions and gave me a whole list of references for further study. Whether you're a complete novice or an inquiring mind not sure what aspect of XML to pursue next, "XML for Dummies" offers an accessible on-ramp to the XML highway and a roadmap to help you get where you want to go.

Blue Willow Inn Bible of Southern Cooking Review.......2007-07-21
This cookbook is a wonderful example of what southern cooking is all about. It has basic recipes which are simple, traditional and flavorful. I have searched for some of these recipes for years and finally found them in this wonderful cookbook. Best cookbook I own!
"The Blue Willow Inn Bible of Southern Cooking...".......2007-01-10
This cook book was an excellent choice! It is very informative, plus offers GREAT recipes.
Not for me.......2007-01-09
I should have listened to L. Ross' Review. The subtitle should have been Bible of 1950's Southern Cooking. Recipies heavy on the use of prepared foods and packet seasonings.
The book claims to contain over 600 Essential Recipies Southerners have enjoyed for Generations. Only a few are the traditional ones my Grandmother cooked at the turn of the last century (1900). This is a book I will pass on rather than keep.
Not so traditional southern cooking.......2006-11-15
When I think of southern cooking, I think of my grandmother and our family gatherings. She would go all out. Fried eggs, grits and buscuits for breakfast. Fried chicken, rolls, beans, greens and potatoes for dinner. I loved her cooking and her she has always been the baseline I use for good southern cooking.
After reading through a few of the reviews for the Blue Willow Inn Bible of Southern Cooking, I felt comfortable with my purchase. However, the moment I cracked open the book, I felt let down. Most of the dishes include canned vegitables over fresh. Processed foods over basics. Not the way I remembered things and certainly not the way I prefer to cook today.
However, it was the biscuit recipe that drove me to return the book. The recipe uses self-rising flour over baking powder or cream of tartar. I don't know of a single southern grandmother that didn't use baking powder when I was growing up.
I realized that the book is the actual recipes for the Blue Willow Inn and that when cooking in mass quantities, they appear to take shortcuts to save time and energy. Understandable if you are cooking for dozens of families a day perhaps. But again, not the way I cook.
If you are looking for quick and easy recipes, this book is for you. But I don't think that this could be considered true southern cooking from the past.
Blue Willow Inn Bible of Southern Cooking.......2006-11-04
A great American cookbook with lots of truly southern recipes that will appeal to all Americans. I found several recipes that I had been looking for for many years and many delicious new ones. A wonderful addition to my recipe collection.
