Good value.......2007-07-15
Superb for younger children, children starting to read without assistance or as a listen along without a book in the car or on a plane.
Great use of voices.......2007-05-12
My kids love this CD. By using character voices from the movies it adds drama and interest in listening. My kids can't wait to listen to this in the car, even when they don't have the books with them. It's well written.
Great Product!.......2006-08-01
Both the book and accompanying CD live up to the Disney name. The voices on the CD are easy to listen to and the pictures are colorful and go along with the story. I purchased the set for my 4 year old grandaughter, but I think it may be another year before she is really ready to use it.

Book Description
The Art of Monsters, Inc. opens the door into Pixar's colorful archives of concept art and to the endearing story of
Monsters, Inc. Since the very first bedtime, children around the world have known that once their parents tuck them into bed and shut off the light, monsters lie waiting behind closet doors, ready to emerge. But what they don't realize is that these monsters scare children because they have to. It's their job. This superb film from Pixar Studios, the people who brought you
Toy Story, A Bug's Life, and
Toy Story 2, reveals the truth about monsters with the brilliant techniques that have earned them their reputation as a ground-breaking animation studio. This incredible body of artwork was commissioned from the top artists, illustrators, and animators in the industry and from it the ultimate visual approach of the film was defined. From sketches scribbled on napkins and quickly inked marker drawings, to finished oil paintings and fabulous pastel color scripts, this behind-the-scenes artwork reveals the elaborate creative process behind a blockbuster film.

INSPIRATIONAL ARTWORK FROM A TERRIFIC MOVIE.......2006-07-19
The colorful artwork in this book really gives you an idea of the development that a film like "Monsters, Inc." goes through to get to the screen. It is also inspiring because it shows that art in film specifically is a genesis -- and can be very collaborative.
Sighhh..........2006-07-01
This is the type of book that makes you smile and sigh a little and then pet it. :]
I'm a Pixar fan and I'm working on collecting all the "Art of" books. So far I have this Monster's Inc. one and Finding Nemo. What's odd about these books is that they are all pretty different. Some contain more commentary than others and the concept art is drawn in different styles. This book has very little commentary and it is in the style of a very cartoony modern art. Finding Nemo on the other hand, has a lot of commentary to take you into the minds of the artists. The Finding Nemo book is also in a more realistic style and a lot of it is charcoal drawings.
So it depends on the type of person you are to tell which "Art of" book to buy. Monster's Inc is a lot more colorful and i feel it's more exciting because you can really see the development of the characters and setting and the gradual changes to what you see in the movie. I really enjoyed this book and I find myself flipping through it over and over again even though I read the whole thing in one sitting when I first received it. It's an amazing addition to any artist and Pixar fan.
A wonderful addition to a Pixar classic.......2003-12-04
This book is full of wonderful, imaginative illustrations that show the time and effort that was placed into Monsters Inc. The numerous different illustrators that have provided work make this collection of images a delight. There is very little text and explanation to go along with the images, but this is exactly what I was looking for. Its interesting to see how many changes the characters appearances went through to reach the final animated film. A definite buy for any fan of Pixar.
Excellent book for any animator........2002-12-01
What's surprising is that in this book there is hardly any screenshots or CG graphic art. But that's what makes the book great! It really proves that computer does not dominate in the animation industry; everything is still from sketches and traditional works. The book filled with great works from Eggleton (director of "For the Bird") and many other amazing script illustrators. The only thing that is disappointing is that most of the images are already available in the Monsters Inc. DVD. Overall, no animator should miss this book! Don't want to miss those amazing prints!

Customer Reviews:
If you like the movie you'll like this book........2005-03-19
My older son loved this book when we introduced it before the DVD. He was too young to sit through the lengthy text but we solved the problem by just telling him our version based on the movie. He bonded instantly with Sully when grandma bought him the giant stuffed monster and "monster" was one of his first words. These days he takes the book out and "reads" his version to his little brother. He's only seen the movie twice (because he has restricted tv viewing time) but he tells a pretty good story.
Too long for very young children.......2002-02-14
My pet peeve among children's books is when they are too darn LONG. It takes forever to read this one aloud as it is written, and my 4-year-old gets pretty bored. (Of course, your four-year-old's mileage may vary.) I usually make up a short, one or two sentence synopsis for each page, and "read" that instead of the long paragraph.
Also the illustrations are just, well, funky-looking. They've got a strange, hard-edge, shadowy look that's nothing like the movie. The writers would have done a lot better to stick to movie cels, or else lighter, brighter caricatures.
This one ended up in the "hardly ever read it" pile.
Boo Is Evil!!.......2001-11-12
Poor Little Mike Is Harmed By Boo. I Personally Didin't Like The "Mr. Bill-Like" Incident When Boo Hurts Poor Mikey! It Wasn't Like We Expected. We Wanted A Quiet Book & Guess What?? A 5 Star Monster Story.......2001-11-02
Monsters Inc. is about monsters trying to scare every child in the human world. The monsters go through doors to each child's closet door. They scare the children and collect the children's screams for energy to run the monster world. All the monsters are afraid of the children because they think they are toxic. Everything goes wrong when a little girl named Boo gets out of the human world. Sulley and Mike are best friends. At first they are afraid of Boo, but Sulley becomes like a kitty to Boo. Sulley and Mike help each other to get Boo out of the monster world. I liked the book when Boo sneezed on Mike. Then Mike sprayed disinfectant spray in his eye when was going spray it on his arm. After he sprayed his eye he covered his eye, stomped his foot and he screamed "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" I also liked it when Mike and Sulley went through the door and wound up in the long corridor passageway. They wound up on a mountain where it was snowing up above were they live. The book was so good that I want to see the movie right away. I want my family to be the first three people in the theater

Should have been a board book.......2003-10-17
This book is cheap. Cute, but cheap. I was expecting a board book, and the content would have been just right for one. It's paperback, with two staples in the middle. I think $...would have been a fair price, especially since I had to reiforce our copy with tape before I could let our 20-month toddler have it. She does enjoy it, and the art is cute, but I felt cheated by the poor quality.
I wish it was a board book!.......2003-02-13
My two year old loves Monsters Inc. Since we limit TV time at our house, I thought that getting him some books about the movie would be a happy compromise when he wants to watch, and I want to get him away from "the box." He was thrilled to read M is for Monster. The book is written from Mike's point of view. So it starts out with Mike at a drawing board saying, "A is for author. I write AND I'm cute." It goes on to feature several characters from the movie: Boo, Celia, George, Sully. The story itself is written in rhyme. The illustrations are simple but colorful. It's a great book. My only complaint is that it only comes in paperback. It's rather flimsy. I would love to see this as a board book. But even as-is, I think it's definitely worth the money.
AMAZING ART DIRECTOR!!.......2003-02-10
A book all children should have. Children learn their ABCs and enjoy very well crafted artwork by Ricky Nierva, who is by far one of the most talented directors at Pixar. You can't lose with this one. Well worth the money. And if you're looking for a few other great titles, look no further than these, Buckland's Hot List: most creative, The Butterfly: A Fable (Singh); most engaging, The Alchemist (Coelho); most interesting, Life of Pi (Martel); most enlightening, 9-11 (Chomsky); most thrilling, The Lovely Bones: A Novel (Sebold); and finally, the most creative, engaging, interesting, enlightening and thrilling book of all, The Little Prince (Saint-Exupery). These are the books I'd recommend to my family, friends, students, and wife. There are many more, trust me, but these are the first that come to mind (for having left an impact slight or proud as it may be). If you have any questions, queries, or comments, or maybe even a title you think I should add to my list, please feel free to e-mail me. I'm always open to a good recommendation. Thanks for reading my brief but hopefully helpful review. Happy reading. Donald S. Buckland.

Great Fun.......2002-04-05
This book is very well designed. Inside there is a sticker book, and a booklet that has spaces for stickers. You put the correct stickers next to the captions and sort of build the story with the stickers. However, the stickers can last more than once. You can peel them off their spots and put them anywhere you like. It includes over 60 colorful stickers. A good buy.

Customer Reviews:
Not Just a Drawing book but a thinking book.......2006-12-25
This books doesnt just give you a bunch of monsters to copy,it actually lays out a total creative process for creating your own unique monster concepts. This fact immediately puts it ahead of most of the 'Draw Manga' books in that it doesn't just give you a list of stylistice tips but a whole way of thinking about the subject.
Cute monsters, Sea monsters, Kaiju, you name it!.......2006-10-08
The monster types in this book basically allow you do do a lot of mixing and matching (some examples were an Elephant with a Bulldozer, a human with a hercules beetle, a squid with a shrimp a crab and a stag beetle, and a Kaiju-fied lemur-esque monster with spikes on its tail... trust me when I say that THIS one is a LOT cooler looking than I've described it). Overall, this book allows for the artist to really use their head, as well as their creativity with some of these astonishingly terrifying, and sometimes cute or cool-looking monsters (the Pet Monsters, as this book calls them).
I'd recommend it to anyone willing to think outside the typical anime norm.

A must-buy.......2003-10-27
This cute book is just right for younger readers: large and short (which makes it easy to hold), and also crammed full of brightly colored illustrations. First off, the book starts out with the monsters (Sulley, Mike, Boo (Ok, not really a monster), Waternoose, Randall, Roz and Celia), then it goes into the Scarers, the Scare Assistants, the Wranglers (Smitty and Needleman), the Scare Floor, Door Stations, the Simulator Room, the C.D.A., Boo's room, Sulley's apartment, and finally ends with Monstropolis. Each item above is described, with informative and funny sidebars, and many cute and colorful pictures.
I bought this book for my nephew, who absolutely loves it! If you have a little reader who loves the movie Monsters, Inc., then you must buy this book. I highly recommend it!
Superb supplement to the film.......2003-06-07
This one is not "just for kids". The rather thin tome illustrates and provides enticing information on the production and its wonderful characters. This is an absolutely necessary supplement to the book, "The Art of Monsters,Inc", as this publication presents the characters in their finished forms and not merely as "concept art".
If you enjoyed the film, you should have this book!
A Great book for a Great film!!!.......2001-12-12
Have you been lying awake at night wondering what Boo's real name is? Perhaps you've been wondering how old Henry J. Waternoose was when he took over the company of Monsters, Inc. Or maybe you just want to know where Mike buys those REALLY big contact lenses.
Puzzle no longer. All these questions are answered in this wonderful and entertaining guide to Disney & Pixar's awesome animated movie. Each page of the book is filled with pictures of the monsters from the film, and is filled with all new facts that were not even revealed in the movie!
For example, on Sulley's page, we learn how the big blue guy met his best friend, Mike. It also tells us who's holding the current Scaring record that Sulley and Randall are racing to beat! Celia's page reveals the names of the snakes that make up her hair, and tells us that she and Mike won a seven-legged race together at a company picnic.
I would tell you more, but I don't wanna spoil everything this great book has to offer. I will, however, tell you my only complaint: Why doesn't Yeti have a page that tells us why he's been exiled?
