    Book Description

No matter the content area, students need to develop clear ways of thinking about and understanding what they learn. But this kind of conceptual thinking seems more difficult in math than in language arts and social studies. Fortunately we now know how to help kids understand more about mathematics than ever before, and in Comprehending Math you'll find out that much of math's conceptual difficulty can be alleviated by adapting what we have learned from research on language and cognition.

In Comprehending Math Arthur Hyde (coauthor of the popular Best Practice) shows you how to adapt some of your favorite and most effective reading comprehension strategies to help your students with important mathematical concepts. Emphasizing problem solving, Hyde and his colleagues demonstrate how to build into your practice math-based variations of:

He then presents a practical way to "braid" together reading comprehension, math problemsolving, and thinking to improve math teaching and learning. Elaborating on this braided model of approach to problem solving, he shows how it can support planning as well as instruction.

Comprehending Math is based on current cognitive research and features more than three dozen examples that range from traditional story problems to open-ended or extended-response problems and mathematical tasks. It gives you step-by-step ideas for instruction and smart, specific advice on planning strategy-based teaching.

Help students do math and get it at the same time. Read Comprehending Math, use its adaptations of familiar language arts strategies, and discover how deeply students can understand math concepts and how well they can use that knowledge to solve problems.

    Book Description

If you've asked someone the secret to writing efficient, well-written software, the answer that you've probably gotten is "learn assembly language programming." By learning assembly language programming, you learn how the machine really operates and that knowledge will help you write better high-level language code. A dirty little secret assembly language programmers rarely admit to, however, is that what you really need to learn is machine organization, not assembly language programming. Write Great Code Vol I, the first in a series from assembly language expert Randall Hyde, dives right into machine organization without the extra overhead of learning assembly language programming at the same time. And since Write Great Code Vol I concentrates on the machine organization, not assembly language, the reader will learn in greater depth those subjects that are language-independent and of concern to a high level language programmer. Write Great Code Vol I will help programmers make wiser choices with respect to programming statements and data types when writing software, no matter which language they use.

4 out of 5 stars The computer book you'll NEVER read.........2007-07-24

If you're like most IT people out in the workforce today, you've got pressures from all sides - deadlines, keeping current with changes in platforms, hardware, software tools, etc. Gah! It never ends!

So, you pick up these "Write Great Code" books, thinking that you'll be a better programmer.

And it's interesting in a way that you remember when you were just getting into the IT field as a student and later as an employee and maybe now as a consultant or contractor.

But, then you realize that this is like thinking about how your car's components are working while you're driving madly to work on some beltway. Only your skills as a driver can keep you from getting hit by a big semi, not the working knowledge of your V8 engine. Guys who work on their cars on the weekend, know more about them than you do, but hey, it gets you to work and back.

And so, you sigh and put the book down and concentrate on your SQL, or your VB or whatever else keeps you employed.

    Why?

Because your users and your manager don't care about what goes on at the machine level. They want the deliverables NOW. The efficiency of your code is of no importance to them, though it is to you.

However, with enough discipline and some thought to what you're doing, you CAN make this book work for you, and get an edge over someone else's sloppy code and maybe even save yourself some programming time.

Because this book is for the guys who are the computer counterparts of the greasy-looking guys on the street who could tell you what's wrong with your car, even if you can't.

5 out of 5 stars Lucid explanation of concepts.......2007-07-06

Author has explained low-level concepts lucidly. It is easy on eyes. Basic concepts become very clear. It is one of those 'can't keep down without reading few chapters at a stretch' kind of technical book. Very few books have this edge. Just don't feel like stopping reading it.

Beginners must read this book before attempting to read more in-depth low-level technical books. This book is a must for people who are exposed to high-level languages but have not studied Computer Science.

5 out of 5 stars Great way to understand data flow at the machine level.......2007-05-21

This is a great way to understand data flow at the machine level.

I especially like the part on memory and IO.

5 out of 5 stars Great information... But do you really need it?.......2006-10-26

This is a great book but I have to disagree with the overall viewpoint. I've been doing embedded programming for a while and if that's all I'd ever done I would totally agree that understanding low level concepts helps write better code. However, I also write a lot of code in C#. People who normally use high level languages such as C#, VB.Net, or JAVA are probably not going to benefit much from this book. These languages are so far abstracted from the hardware level that the concepts are hard to apply anywhere. On the other hand, if you still use malloc on a daily basis, you need to read the book :) Anyway, the book is easy to read and I never caught any errors. If you want to learn about computers at a low level, then this is a great book to start with!

    5 out of 5 stars A must have book.......2006-10-21

Randall Hyde is doing really good job. Every software developer should read it.

3 out of 5 stars reductive, but still very useful.......2002-10-16

Minor has undertaken the impossible. Any historiography that is limited to 200 pages will undoubtedly be overly reductive. However, this does not entirely discredit Minor's work. While one may take issue with him in a number of places (particularly his chapter on feminism) he provides a generally well-balanced, user-friendly introduction to theories of modern scholarship. Minor is very cognizant of his own fallibility. He recognizes that his sketches of modern methodologies are inadequate. But he provides the necessary background for anyone who wishes to understand the state of contemporary art history.
At the conclusion of this book the reader is left unsatisfied. Yet I think that this may have been Minor's intent (I realize I am being a terrible deconstructionist). His aim, rather, seems to be to ignite an interest in students of art history, that they might, of their own volition, continue their study of art historical methodologies. If this is indeed Minor's aim, he succeeds.

2 out of 5 stars Undertones of disdain towards the German culture.......2006-10-23

Having lived in Germany for a year now, I decided to finally flip through this book, given to me as a parting gift in April 2005. As I read, I was appalled at Mr. Flippo's seeming dislike for Germans. The book is more of a warning for all the traveling American's to be on their guard rather than an informative guide. My favorite quote is, "This "pushy" behavior is not limited to Germans. It's a European thing" (p.31). This extraordinary generalization is quickly followed by the warning that you must either bring your own shopping bags or purchase one in a German grocery store and, as stated by Flippo, "to add insult to injury, you usually have to bag your own groceries". Gee, reducing waste by encouraging the reuse of shopping bags and keeping prices low by simply putting your Müsli in your own bag instead of hiring some prepubescent bag boy to do it for you is a pure abomination and should be henceforth considered "insult to injury" (I'm hoping you're noting my sarcasm). The book continues in this fashion, with hardly a bright comment to be had about this amazing culture. The only reason I'm giving this two stars instead on one is because the author does have a few nuggets of truth and interesting observations woven within his cleverly placed one-liner biases. If you still purchase this book, remember to read critically and differentiate opinion from facts.

1 out of 5 stars 60% of contents are useless facts........2006-06-29

just on principle, i have returned the book even though it was only $9. it's definitely not for someone looking for a guide to german ways; the book should have been updated since 2002.

    4 out of 5 stars Useful.......2006-06-16

This book is a good reference for anyone planning on spending any time in German Europe. At the very beginning of the book there is quiz to test your knowledge, of which the answers are provides at the back of the book. Flippo uses culture and history to explain the German way of life. He covers all the main travel subjects such as entertainment, food and drink, language, and transportation. He also talks about other topics not often found in the common travel book; such as business and economy, health and fitness, and education.

Flippo makes it very easy to read. I would suggest reading the whole book because although some areas may not interest you, the articles are brief and provide a good cultural understanding of the German way of life. Due to the variety of topics discussed in this book, I would recommend it to anyone who plans on spending a little extra time submersed in the German culture. While the book is very enlightening and should be read by everyone traveling to Germany, it covers more than just the basic travel information.

3 out of 5 stars Nice stories but it reinforces stereotypes and urban legends.......2006-02-21

I have lived in Germany for more than 20 years and am currently residing in the United States.

I bought this book as a gift for a friend. Browsing through it myself I found that some things pointed out in the book are on-spot (for example the "Sie und Du" section on how to address people, or insights on dining out).

However, some things covered in the book describe a Germany of 100 years ago (the "Hauptmann von Koepenick" episode, while factually correct, fails to point out that today's Germany fortunately has little resemblance to the Prussian-style military culture of yore described here).

And the chapter on "Kehrwoche" - purportedly an institution of cleaning the hallway in front of one's apartment - is an urban legend to me. Visitors to the town of Stuttgart have told me that they heard of people subjected to such neighborhood rituals. But in all my years in Germany I have never had anybody confirm such facts to me so it is a regional oddity at best. And again the author fails to put this into proper context, thus making today's Germans seem like some cleanliness-and-orderliness-obsessed oddballs to a much greater degree than they deserve.

So while there is some truth in all hyperbole I encourage you to buy a book written by somebody who has seen more than one or two cities and who has been to Germany recently.

    4 out of 5 stars A Charming Little Book.......2006-01-27

This book presents short snippets of cultural information about Germany and Germans. Each topic covers a single page and is written in a brief newspaper article style. I found out a lot of interesting little things. For example, if they put rolls on the table, they aren't free. You pay for every roll that you eat. It's little tidbits like this that make for some very interesting reading.

It's a very light read, and you can probably finish it on the plane ride to Germany. The topics are mainly cultural in nature, so you won't find any hard travel advice in this book. I recommend it for those who would like to learn a little more about the people they will visit when they arrive in Germany.

Catherine Ryan Hyde's Pay It Forward takes as its premise the bumper-sticker phrase "Think Globally, Act Locally" and builds a novel around it. The hero of her story is young Trevor McKinney, a 12-year-old whose imagination is sparked by an extra-credit assignment in Social Studies: "Think of an idea for world change, and put it into action." Trevor's idea is deceptively simple: do a good deed for three people, and in exchange, ask each of them to "pay it forward" to three more. "So nine people get helped. Then those people have to do twenty-seven.... Then it sort of spreads out." Trevor's early attempts to get his project off the ground seem to end in failure: a junkie he befriends ends up back in jail; an elderly woman whose garden he tends dies unexpectedly. But even after the boy has given up on his plan, his acts of kindness bear unexpected fruit, and soon an entire movement is underway and spreading across America.

Trevor, meanwhile, could use a little help himself. His father walked out on the family, and his mother, Arlene, is fighting an uphill battle with alcoholism, poor judgment in men, and despair. When the boy's new Social Studies teacher, Reuben St. Clair, arrives on the scene, Trevor sees in him not only a source of inspiration for how to change the world, but also the means of altering his mother's life. Yet Reuben has his own set of problems. Horribly scarred in Vietnam, he is reluctant to open himself up to the possibility of rejection--or love. Indeed, the relationship between Arlene and Reuben is central to the novel as these two damaged people learn to "pay forward" the trust and affection Trevor has given them.

Hyde tells her tale from many different perspectives, using letters, diary entries, and first- and third-person narratives from the various people whose lives Trevor's project touches. Jerry Busconi, for example, the addict Trevor tried to help, one night finds himself talking a young woman out of jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge:

I'm a junkie, Charlotte. I'm always gonna be a junkie. I ain't never gonna be no fine, upstanding citizen. But then I thought, hell. Just pay it forward anyway. Kid tried to help me. Okay, it didn't work. Still, I'm trying to help you. Maybe you'll jump. I don't know. But I tried, right? But let me tell you one thing. I woke up one morning and somebody gave me a chance. Just outta nowhere. It was like a miracle. Now, how do you know that won't happen to you tomorrow?
Pay It Forward is reminiscent of Frank Capra's classic It's a Wonderful Life. Like the film, this novel has a steely core of gritty reality beneath its optimism: yes, one person can make a difference, can help to make the world a better place, but sickness, pain, heartache, and tragedy will still always be a part of the human condition. If at times Hyde stumbles a bit while negotiating the razor-thin line between honest feeling and sentimentality, it's generally not for long. And the occasional lapse into artificially colored emotion can be forgiven when weighed against the courage it takes to write so unabashedly hopeful a story in such cynical times. --Sheila Bright

    Book Description

It all started with the social studies teacher's extra-credit assignment: come up with a plan to change the world for the better, and do it. Twelve-year-old Trevor McKinney began by doing something good for three people. But instead of paying him back, he asked them to "pay it forward" by doing a favor for three more people, who in turn would help three others, and so on, each act a link in a chain of human kindness.

And no one -- not his teacher, his mom, or anyone in his small California town -- could ever have dreamed of how far Trevor's plan would go.

    Download Description

This poignant novel of a young boy's unfailing belief in an individual's power to change the world and the ultimate goodness of the human spirit is destined to become a classic. Demonstrating the same universal appeal as "Forrest Gump, " Hyde's story is a down-to-earth look at the virtue of innocence and of faith--not in a deity, but in humankind.

Reuben St. Clair is a teacher of seventh graders. He has just moved to a new town to teach, which is difficult for him. It is so difficult because he was badly wounded in Vietnam and half of his face is terribly scarred. People find it hard to look at him, and he finds it hard to deal with people who treat him like he has a disease. On the first day of school, he assigns his students a project they can do for extra credit. They are to come up with a plan that will change the world for the better, and they are to put that plan into action.

Several students take the challenge, including Trevor, a boy who lives with his lonely single mom, who works far harder than she should have to. Trevor's idea is to choose three people and do pretty big favors for them. When they want to pay him back, he will instead tell them to pay it forward--to each choose three more people and do pretty big favors for them, spreading the word of paying it forward. No one seems to think his idea will work. People won't continue on this sort of honor system. But Trevor tries anyway.

Trevor's first project is a homeless addict. Trevor gives money from his paper route so the man can get some decent clothing and get a job. Soon after that, the man goes back to drinking and drugs and ends up in prison. Trevor's second project is to spend hours and hours fixing the garden of an old woman who lives down the street. She is grateful and seems like she will really pay it forward. But then she dies shortly after that. Trevor's third project is an attempt to get his teacher and his mother together. That goes badly right from the start, and Trevor admits that his project is a bust.

However, things are happening in town and across the nation. Good deeds are being done for people by total strangers. Could it be that the idea of paying it forward has really picked up?

I liked the format of this book. It was written from several points of view, to put everything together. I also liked the relationship between Trevor and Reuben. However, I didn't much like the relationship between Reuben and Trevor's mother. It was far too easy. The whole plot was very simplistic; it made it seem as though it would be reasonable for a middle-schooler to inspire everyone across the country to start being nice.

3 out of 5 stars A Story to Remember for the Good It Imparts........2006-12-14

The cover of this paperback shows the stars of the film based loosely on this clever book. It is easier to read heart-wrending and impossibly sad situations than it is to watch them acted out on stage or in the movies. The thesis is somewhat changed to Hollywood standards, but on the whole it is worth buying the video as a remembrance of a wonderful book with a magnificent thought of changing America and the world with consideration and manners and "do unto others" we were taught at church as children.

This movie was cute and thought-provoking. The star clearly is Haley Joel Osment who we all loved in 'Sixth Sense' with Bruce Willis. He is still the lovable precocious child who can manipulate the adults to do as he wants and think it was their idea in the first place. Trevor has an unhappy childhood with an absent dad and an uneducated waitress mother played by Helen Hunt, a marvelous actress. His 7th grade teacher, the highly intelligent Kevin Spacey thinks he is playing a game when he directs his students to be do-gooders. Only Trevor takes him seriously. This is the basic pyramid scheme like a chain letter.

The children must do good deeds for three people, who in turn do good things for three other people. These nine must "pay it forward" ad infinitum. It was a game of "do-good"ing which could change the world into a nicer place. The teacher becomes Trevor's pawn in the game of chance whereby Trevor maneuvers to pair him up with his single mom. Both adults are scarred inwardly and outwardly, and Trevor's attempts show how low-class becomes high class.

This was based on the book written by Catherine Ryan Hyde, which was better than the film, as they usually always are. "Pay forward" is the manner of preforming an unexpected act of kindness which multiplies hundredfold. Haley Joel Osment was as superb in this smaltzy film as he was the dead child in 'Sixth Sense.' Ms. Hyde has written other such novels and all are well worth the effort of reading. Watching is totally different from reading and hearing the voices in your mind. It is better to visualize the characters than to watch the individual acting styles of so-called stars who try to outdo each other. Read before you view.

    5 out of 5 stars READ IT!!.......2006-11-22

Pay it forward is one of the greatest book I've ever read. It's about a twelve-year-old boy that comes up with an idea of how he can change the world. The book's about his efforts to forfill his idea to be a worldwide movement. The book really made me realize that one person can make a diffrent.. It made me look up and see how people treat eachother in our society and even if I wasn't to happy about what I saw, I felt some kind of hope that there's somebody out in the world making a change..

The Universal Serial Bus (USB) specification is a boon for users in that it makes the process of connecting peripherals to computers effortless, in most cases. As is often the case with user-friendliness, though, the cosmetic ease comes about as a result of behind-the-scenes complexity. USB Design by Example explains what USB means to hardware developers, taking an approach that combines academic elucidation of the official specification with some experimental setups. Though not everything a hardware developer could wish for, John Hyde's explanations represent a valuable supplement to the notably obtuse specification documents.

This book does a good job of explaining USB input/output from both the hardware and software perspectives. You'll find both driver code and pinout diagrams here. All the software information has to do with the IBM-compatible PC platform and the Windows 98 operating system, so Macintosh developers will have to look elsewhere. Some of Hyde's explanations of how various hardware companies solved USB problems--Symbol Technologies' use of a keyboard emulator for its barcode scanners, for example--are intriguing, but more information (in the form of circuit diagrams, preferably) would be better. The clear explanation of what happens when a new device is plugged into a live USB bus is very intriguing, though. Overall, peripheral developers will find this book useful, but not encyclopedic. --David Wall

Topics covered: Universal Serial Bus (USB) architecture, packet contents, device detection, drivers and run-time software, and bridging older connection specifications (RS-232, parallel, SCSI and I2C) to USB.

      Book Description

This unique guide goes beyond all the Universal Serial Bus (USB) specification overviews to provide you with the expert knowledge and skills you need to design and implement USB I/O devices. It is organized around a series of fully documented, real-world examples, and is structured to serve as both a step-by-step guide for creating specific devices and a complete reference to USB. Design examples cover most USB classes (HID, communications, audio, mass-storage and hub) and provide insights into high-speed USB 2.0 devices, including a definition and a device driver for a vendor class, called blockio.

4 out of 5 stars YAY for some one with enough sense to explain the complicated.......2007-01-10

This is a great book for getting on your way to getting
a windows program interfaced to your newly created grand device.

It even has plenty of practical application examples.
This IS a book worth having.

The only thing is that a lot of the examples are for the visual studio 6
which I'd kinda like to find a book that details this same way
      only for .NET.

With patience you can make these code examples .NET friendly.

This book deserves 5 stars, but because its Visual Studio 6
and not .NET ready. It gets 4.

5 out of 5 stars Great examples for USB design.......2005-02-18

USB Design by Example is an excellent approach to using USB - designs by example. I have tried several of the examples in both VB and VC++, and both are superb. On the embedded side, the explanations are both thorough and understandable.

I had a question about one of the example programs, so I emailed John, expecting an auto-response or hearing back in a week or so. He responded in ten minutes with the solution.

This is for a novice as well as an intermediate user of USB.

2 out of 5 stars it doesn't tell you all you need to know.......2004-08-23

You couldn't follow the examples in the book to get the projects working. If you have experience with USB already, this maybe good to expand your knowledge.

1 out of 5 stars CD examples are broken.......2003-09-30

Bought this book for one of the examples which seemed to be exactly what we needed - the Two Keyboards example. We had a great deal of trouble getting it to work, and we contacted the author directly. He was initially keen to help, telling us he was aware that the CD was generally messed up and versions of files were wrong. He pointed us at an updated online version. We tried this and had even worse problems getting it to build, let alone install. We contacted the author again, and he admitted the online versions were broken too, but he wasn't prepared to help us any further. The least you would ask is that the examples work fairly well and have installation advice either on the CD or in the book. I concur with another reviewer who said that the CD seems to be a mess and full of useless product information. It is hard to see a target audience for whom this book would be useful.

We made this purchase in spite of the poor reviews here, however we implore you to avoid this book: it is unlikely to fulfill your requirements and John Hyde does not deserve your money. It is clearly intended as a money-spinner rather than a useful reference.

      1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2002-07-31

      Short review: this book [stinks].

On the surface, this book looks like it is fairly good although it includes a lot of Intel PR about what a good thing USB is. Digging deeper, you will find serious errors, omissions, and examples of poor programming. Files mentioned in the book as being on the CD aren't. Could not find errata at the Intel Press web site. Assembly code just includes all source files in the project. I still haven't figured out how to debug a project like this. Any normal person would set the project up to assemble each file separately. All but one (firmware) project are written in assembly and the one C example doesn't work. The list could go on ...

Before I bought the book, I read these reviews and, generally, they were favorable. Now, I'm simply amazed that anyone would give it any more than 2 stars.

BTW, I think the book and CD are on-line at the Intel Press web site. At a price of $0.00, I'll give it 2 stars.

      3 out of 5 stars A Rather "Meh" Antique Store's Inventory........2007-01-03

My hopes were dashed again when I received this book, but I guess its my fault this time. I assumed (from the beautiful cover) that I would be getting a book showcasing traditional interiors, but what I got instead was something that resembled a Sothebys auction catalogue -- that is, a book featuring tasteful English furniture & gewgaws from the inventory of Hyde Park Antiques. There were a few shots of interiors scattered here & there, but they weren't that interesting. (Where's the sagging couch with the half-finished needlepoint, hello?) I wish the people who write blurbs for these books would stop name-dropping my favourite designers (Bunny Williams, you are a goddess!) so I won't keep wasting my money on these expensive doorstoppers. [Maximum Toile weeps in disappointment.] Sniffles.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book of Beautiful Things.......2006-12-22

In the United States we tend to think of antiques as something our grandmother had, or perhaps something that goes back as far as the Civil War. In English history, in English antiques, that isn't old at all. And the quintessential source for as new condition, museum quality English antique furniture in the United States for the past forty years has been Hyde Park Antiques in New York City.

As Mr. Buatta says: 'The gallery is like a living museum, with the important difference being that you not only get to touch the objects, you have the unparalleled pleasure of being able to take them home with you.'

This book is a beautifully photographed, exquisitely printed collection of some 150 items from the gallery. It is organized by date, beginning with William and Mary & Queen Anne style dating from their reign (1689-1714).

These photographs are accompanied by drawings and photographs of rooms from English (and a few imitation) homes that illustrate how this furniture was combined with other items, perhaps English, Indian or oriental to create English rooms.

      5 out of 5 stars Martha Stewart says it's a GOOD thing.......2006-12-11

On Wednesday December 6, 2006 on her TV show, Martha Stewart featured a small number of coffee table books for the holiday season. One of her favorites was this book: Classic English Design and Antiques by Emily Eerdmans. She said - and I quote - "This is a fantastic, fantastic book."

After reading it myself, I must agree Martha had it right. Visually stunning, thoroughly researched and beautifully written - an aesthetic, scholarly and literary tour de force. In short, as Martha said, a fantastic, fantastic book.
