Book Description
The long-awaited memoir from one of the most celebrated modern dancers of the past fifty years: the story of her own remarkable career, of the formative years of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and of the two brilliant, iconoclastic, and forward-thinking artists at its center—Merce Cunningham and John Cage.
From its inception in the l950s until her departure in the l970s, Carolyn Brown was a major dancer in the Cunningham company and part of the vibrant artistic community of downtown New York City out of which it grew. She writes about embarking on her career with Cunningham at a time when he was a
celebrated performer but a virtually unknown choreographer. She describes the heady exhilaration—and dire financial straits—of the company’s early days, when composer Cage was musical director and Robert Rauschenberg designed lighting, sets and costumes; and of the struggle for acceptance of their controversial, avant-garde dance. With unique insight, she explores Cunningham’s technique, choreography, and experimentation with compositional procedures influenced by Cage. And she probes the personalities of these two men: the reticent, moody, often secretive Cunningham, and the effusive, fun-loving, enthusiastic Cage.
Chance and Circumstance is an intimate chronicle of a crucial era in modern dance, and a revelation of the intersection of the worlds of art, music, dance, and theater that is Merce Cunningham’s extraordinary hallmark.

A brilliant insider's view of Cunningham and Cage.......2007-08-12
Merce Cunningham and John Cage are two of the most significant figures in dance and music in the second half of the 20th century. Cage, who is aruguably the most influential artist of the second half of the century, has been much written about, and was himself a prolific author. Cunningham has also published influential books, and the two have been the subject of numerous documentaries. But not until now has there been an insider's view of what it was like to be an intimate part of the Cage-Cunningham inner circle, a world that included artists Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, composers Earl Brown, Morton Feldman, and David Tudor, and many others. Brown has written an honest, sincere account of what life was like touring the US in a VW bus with Cage at the wheel, stopping for picnics along the way. Moreover, while Brown clearly adores both Cage and Cunningham, she doesn't hesitate to provide occasionally hair-raising accounts of things said and done by these two artists that seem incongruous with the myths built up around them. In that regard, Brown renders them human in a way I have never previosuly encountered. Reading that Cage, while in his cups one night, held forth on how turned on he was by Merce, should finally set the record straight (pardon the pun) about Cage's sexuality. The book is a treasury of great anecdotes about Brown's life on the road with an astonishing group of artists, and I felt privileged to have been privy to the journey. It is also a savvy analysis of Cunningham's choreography from the perspective of someone who actually danced it. This book should be required reading for anyone seriously interested in understanding the lives and work of Cage and Cunningham.
A Major Document.......2007-06-27
The wonderful thing about this book is that it gives a very close-up view of the Cage/Cunningham world, especially in the early years of the Cunningham Dance Company. It also presents the two major figures, John Cage and Merce Cunningham, in a critical light. We see them both as the towering creative forces that the outer world knows, as well as the difficult, moody, and complicated people they really are, or were.
The book is exhausting in the way it reveals Brown's life as a dancer, and the tensions and struggles of the Company. Perhaps it could be a few pages shorter, but (in the first half of the book) the insights into the world of modern dance in general, and the NY avant-garde in the 1950's and 60's in particular is fascinating and valuable.
It's also a good example of why people should keep detailed journals.
If only this had been published 30 years ago.......2007-05-13
This book is an excellent opportunity to examine Merce Cunningham's work. Carolyn Brown was probably his favorite dancer. She was intimately connected to Merce and John Cage. Many will come away with a more real understanding of what "chance" means to this work. This is very much a dancer's view of things. I only wonder why it took her thirty-five years to write this book. She confesses to the book deal being offered and signed almost as soon as she retired. There are telling comments on State support of the arts and on unions.
revisiting merce with CB.......2007-05-08
As a former student and long time friend of Ms. Brown and Merce Cunningham, I was moved and delighted to revisit the struggles, perseverance and creativity that went into daily life during the years Ms. Brown spent in the Cunningham Company and to understand, from her viewpoint, the inner workings of Merce's choreographic process. I learned so much and appreciate the knowledge, skill and levels of artistry, friendship and as well as travail that made those years so vital. Thanks, CB

Bring your chickens home to roost in comfort and style! Whether you're keeping one hen in a small backyard or 1,000 hens in a large free-range pasture, you will find the perfect housing plan in this comprehensive handbook.
Author and farmer Judy Pangman combed the country to select these 45 plans for housing both laying hens and meat birds (chickens or turkeys). The coops range from fashionable backyard structures featured in the annual Seattle Tilth City Chickens Tour and the Mad City Chickens Tour in Madison, Wisconsin, to the large-scale, moveable structures Joel Salatin has fashioned for Polyface Farm in Virginia.
You'll also find plans for converting trailer frames, greenhouses, and backyard sheds; low-budget alternatives for working with found and recycled materials; and simple ways to make waterers, feeders, and nestboxes. A gallery of color photographs provides other creative ideas to get you going. With basic building skills, a little elbow grease, and this book of plans, you've got all you need to shelter your flock.

No plans in this book! Just ideas.......2007-08-11
This book would have gotten 5/5 stars from me if it read, "Chicken Coops: 46 Building IDEAS/PICTURES for housing your flock." There are absolutely NO PLANS IN THIS BOOK!!! If your looking for with actual plans in it, try "Poultry House Construction, by Michael Roberts." That book is under a hundred pages and is a wealth of knowledge (with various plans in it). If your looking for great chicken coop IDEAS than this is your book. There are a lot of great ideas in this book, and if your good with planning and tools than this is all you need. As I said if the book supplemented the word Ideas instead of plans I would have given it five starts. This is a great book, it just has a misleading title. Sorry Ms. Pangman I can't give you 5 stars when your book doesn't live up to it's title.
Chicken Coops - 45 Building Plans for Housing Your Flock.......2007-07-26
Lately our garden has been over run with weeds and grasshoppers, I am planning to build a small coop to house and protect a few chickens, mostly for weed control, but a few eggs would be a good bonus. This book is full of ideas. I can use the ideas from many of the plans to design a coop to fit our needs. I recommend this book to any one who has a need for a small coop or a small area for chickens.
Not what the tittle implies.......2007-07-11
Should I have read the reviews, including that of the author... I would probably not have this book on my shelves.
The book is interesting and amusing to see how different people has built different Coops and Houses for their birds but if you are looking for (as I was) real plans and how to build kind of book... you should look somewhere else.
What I have learned... is to read reviews and don't take book titles literally.
Can't speak for book, just service.......2007-06-27
Since I ordered the book for a chicken-raising friend, I can't really speak for the book itself. It did take forever to get here though- several books I'd ordered through the marketplace came form various areas of the country days (or weeks) sooner!
Coffee table chicken coop book.......2007-04-23
I was aware that there were no building plans (based on other reviews), but I wasn't too worried because of I can make materials lists pretty easily from drawings. However, I was surprised that the drawings in this book have incorrect measurements (rather frustrating). This is a coffee table book, and even as that, it's not so exciting. There were really only a few designs that broke away from the square-box chicken coop idea. The best thing about this book is the presentation of the idea of keeping chickens as being an urban middle-class phenomenon. It was good for ideas, but it's not a keeper.
Book Description
One rainy day in Brooklyn, Jennings Michael Burch's mother, too sick to care for him, left him at an orphanage, saying only, "I'll be right back." She never returned. Shuttled through a series of bleak foster homes and institutions, he never remained in any of them long enough to make a friend. Instead, Jennings clung to a tattered stuffed animal, his sole source of warmth in a frightening world. This is the poignant story of his lost childhood. But it is also the triumphant tale of a little boy who finally gained the courage to reach out for love-and found it waiting for him.
Customer Reviews:
Half-truths?.......2007-09-22
I liked the book, but I have internal warning lights going off as to the complete veracity of the story.
While I don't doubt that many of the abusive and neglectful things that happened to Burch did, in fact, happen to him, I can't help but have this feeling that there is some embellishment going on when it comes to some of the abuse. Sometimes the stories of cruelty seem so far-fetched, that they border on implausible (given all the characters involved in any one incident). There are also stories of being rescued from abuse that seem a little fishy.
Even more implausible however, is the philosophical wisdom of some of the children involved...like Burch's sickly brother, Jerome, or his Institution friend, Mark. These pre-teens seem to be able to impart wisdom and knowledge an a scale that most adults have a hard time embracing, even after a lifetime of existence, let alone when they were children.
I'd be willing to bet that the Author had to embellish a little in order to create some of the dialog (dialog dominates much of this book). He would have to! Who amongst us at middle-age can recall, IN DETAIL, lengthy conversations that they had when they were eight years old? But what concerns me more than needing to embellish the dialog, is this feeling I had that there are times when "fact" goes more in to the "fantasy" realm, for the sake of dramatic license. It often seems like certain scenarios have all the timing and drama of a Hollywood screenplay, as opposed to "ringing true to life".
I don't doubt that what Mr. Burch experienced as a child was indeed traumatizing and terrifying. And for that alone, it's a worthwhile read. I just have my doubts as to how much is "autobiographical" and how much is "novel" writing. How can much of what was supposedly said between Mark , Jerome and Jennings be proven anyway? Mark dies in his youth, and Jerome not very long after him (relatively speaking).
This is only an impression I'm making about this book however, as I have no proof one way or the other that there is embellishment going on. I'm just stating a gut-feeling I personally have which is born solely out of life-experience, and that's all.
But if there was embellishment for dramatic effect, I would have preferred that the Author was honest about it. And if there was none, my sincerest apologies for doubting him.
You read it and you decide. :-)
Surviving in life........2007-07-12
This story of a little boy's surviving hardships is so sad; yet he keeps going by letting go of hatered for those who hurt him, and looking forward to a better future.
Great book.......2007-06-09
This is my favorite book. I have read this book over the years no less than eight times......that is why I had to get a new one :-)
I highly recommend this book especially if you are like me and only like to read non-fiction.
Do NOT Bother!!!!.......2007-03-30
This book is horrible. The story is intresting, but it becomes lost benath a style that is both immature and drab. It is clearly written by someone without any training in creative writing. I do not understand what the prevous reviewer saw in this book.
Loved this book.......2007-02-23
I read this book many years ago when I was in 6th grade, actually my teacher read it to us. she found out that Jennings Michael Burch went to different schools around the country to talk about his life. he came to my school the following year. a few years laer when I was in 9th grade he came back, a few years before that I had written him a letter about how much I loved his book. when he came back the 2nd time he stayed at my house. we were his host family. I will never forget that. I have my autographed book with me. IF YOU HAVE NEVER READ THIS BOOK, READ IT. It will make you cry, so have a box of kleenex next to you.

Book Description
During the past 29 years, author James McDonald has had the opportunity to visit some of the most successful bird farms from Florida to California and exchange ideas. As a bird wholesaler and owner of one of the largest bird breeding farms in the state of Texas, he had many opportunities to learn from other peoples' mistakes as well as his own, and the designs included in How to Build Your Own Aviary, Cages, Nestboxes, Etc. and $ave A Bundle have proven track records. While the hobbyist raising a few birds may get by with doing things exactly like it was done 50 years ago, the bird breeders who wish to derive a profit from their bird breeding operations need the most up to date information that is available. Cage breeding has replaced colony breeding for many types of exotic birds. Bird watering equipment has dramatically improved. Convenience as well as the comfort of both the birds and yourself should be a factor in designing and equipping both commercial and hobbyist aviaries. By building your aviary correctly the first time, you will not only save money, but time as well.
This book was written as a practical guide for both the hobbyist and commercial breeders who want to save startup cost by building their own aviary and equipment. A great deal of money can be saved by doing it yourself. For example, the parakeet breeding cage described later in this book that holds two breeding pairs of birds, complete with tray, cost $10.20 to build. Manufactured cages of similar size and quality run from $50 to $70 each, plus freight. It doesn't take a mathematician to figure out that you can build 5 to 7 cages for the same price that you would pay for a single store bought cage. A little more math will reveal that if you build your own cages, you can probably save enough money to purchase top of the line breed stock to put in those cages and still have money left over, resulting in what would seem like getting your birds for free.
While there are some skills needed to build practically anything, you certainly don't need to be a construction engineer in order to build the things included in this book. Almost anyone with basic carpentry skills can build a suitable building that can be used for an aviary, and practically everyone can build the cages, nest boxes, etc. that are covered in this book. It's not even necessary to have a well-equipped home workshop. The things included in this book were built with hand tools and simple power tools such as a power saw, jigsaw, and drill.
The book is written in an easy to understand, reader-friendly style and includes over 200 step-by-step actual photos, 3-D drawings and illustrations that will guide you through every step of the process. The large 8 1/2" x 11" sized format makes reading and following instructions easy on the readers eyes.
Customer Reviews:
Not a word about outdoor aviaries in this book!.......2007-09-13
An aviary is more than a cage. I found this book very expensive for chapters that basically repeated the same info, with just a change of bird name etc. I was hoping for some plans to build an outdoor aviary, but this book is about mass producing cages of lower quality to house
hundreds of birds for breeding and profit.
Good "How To" Book.......2007-07-15
This is a good book. It is not for the person who has never built anything though. Fortunately my roommate is a real handy dandy person and can decipher these how to books quite easily. I don't know what half the tools are. So if you plan to use it to build cages or an aviary, you better know something about building things to start with, or have a good friend who does.
great book .......2006-11-10
this is a great book for those who want to start the bird business idea with the minimum coasts,it explains how to build all from scratches, the only thing taking against it is the black and white photoes used to explain how to make nest boxes and so ,but not really a big deal as long as explains all steps though building things.
Great guide for the do-it-yourselfers.......2005-02-26
The entire book is clear, concise and very informative. It is BY FAR the best book that I've found on building an aviary and it's sooo easy to follow. The pictures and illustrations are top notch.
Easy to follow.......2005-02-17
I'm not a professional reviewer or anything like that, I guess don't have the time or the desire to read a bunch of books, but this book helped me a lot. I'm also not a professional builder, but I remodeled an existing building that I had and built my own cages according to the plans in the book. We raise parakeets and our small business helps my wife and I supplement our social security.
Book Description
In Resurrecting Empire, Rashid Khalidi dissected the failures of colonial policy over the entire span of the modern history of the Middle East, predicted the meltdown in Iraq that we are now witnessing with increasing horror, and offered viable alternatives for achieving peace in the region. His newest book, The Iron Cage, hones in on Palestinian politics and history. Once again Khalidi draws on a wealth of experience and scholarship to elucidate the current conflict, using history to provide a clear-eyed view of the situation today. The story of the Palestinian search to establish a state begins in the era of British control over Palestine and stretches between the two world wars, when colonial control of the region became increasingly unpopular and power began to shift toward the United States. In this crucial period, and in the years immediately following World War II, Palestinian leaders were unable to achieve the long-cherished goal of establishing an independent state-a critical failure that throws a bright light on the efforts of the Palestinians to create a state in the many decades since 1948. By frankly discussing the reasons behind this failure, Khalidi offers a much-needed perspective for anyone concerned about peace in the Middle East.

Good historian, stolid writer.......2007-04-18
I will not duplicate the excellent summations of this important work by Columbia professor Rashid Khalidi. Nor do I challenge his research or analysis of a complex situation. What I will add (and concur with another reviewer) is that it is a very slow and tedious read -- repetitious, lacking in vivid narration, and plagued with ackwardly constructed and convoluted arguments that make it difficult to even skim. The Iron Cage is worth reading to glean the important points the author makes about why Palestinians have achieved so little in their long, sad history, and their failure to achieve sustained good leadership. But, to be honest, reading this book was an uphill battle. I was very motivated because of my interest in the topic, otherwise I would have put it aside and looked for another well informed book written by a person with a better feel for the written language. (That being said, I heard the author discuss his book on C-SPAN and found him more compelling as a speaker.)
Outstanding book which reveals the truth regarding Palestinians & the nightmare called "Israel".......2007-03-15
I am Jewish and the "state" of "Israel" is an embarrassment to worldwide Jewry. More and more Jews are waking up to this fact. This book does an excellent job of exposing the cruelty which Jews inflicted (and continue to inflict) on the indiginous Palestinians after Jews stole their land in 1948.
superb overview of the Palestinians from a terrific historian.......2007-03-14
Khalidi does it again! Like in his previous books, he informs the general reader about the real story behind the headlines. Smear campaigns against Khalidi by groups like Campus Watch seem to be part of a strategy to convince the US public that there is no such thing as a rational, reasonable Palestinian. That is precisely what New-York-born-and-raised Khalidi is - and an important voice for the public debate in America. His former colleagues at the University of Chicago (many of them Jewish) hold him in high esteem.
Fine account of the Palestinian people's struggle for national self-determination.......2007-03-08
Professor Rashid Khalidi, a historian at Columbia University in the City of New York, has written a brilliant account of the Palestinian people's struggle for national self-determination.
He shows how in the 1920s and 1930s, the British Empire deprived the Palestinians of all democracy to stop them defeating the Zionist project. The Mandate for Palestine, like the Balfour Declaration, made no reference to Palestinians or Arabs, only to `non-Jewish communities' who had only civil and religious, not national or political, rights. By contrast, both Mandate and Declaration asserted that the `Jewish people' had the right to a `national home'.
Khalidi notes the British Empire's `vast experience in thwarting the will of majorities in different countries'. He shows in detail how it divided, diverted and distracted all opposition to its rule. The Empire's rulers always presented the colonies as made up of incompatible religious and ethnic communities, who would be at each other's throats without the benevolent presence of the British.
Khalidi dissects the Zionist myth that `seven Arab armies' invaded Israel in 1948-49. The fiercest fighting was the Jordanian army's defence of areas assigned by the UN to the Arab state, and of the UN-defined area around Jerusalem, against Israeli offensives.
He records that in 1991, the first Bush Government pledged "to oppose settlement activity in the territories occupied in 1967, which remains an obstacle to peace." But the US government broke its word: it backed the Israelis throughout the 1990s building new settlements to reinforce their illegal occupation.
Finally, he shows how, at the behest of the Israeli government, the USA imposed rules for negotiations on the Palestinians which "indefinitely froze dealing with any of the issues of substance between the two sides (the final status issues: occupation, settlements, Jerusalem, refugees, water, and permanent borders), while there was no concomitant freeze on the building of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem." In April 2004, Bush II openly tore up his father's pledge when he wrote to Sharon recognising the `new realities on the ground, including already existing major Israeli population centers'.
Coming to Terms with a Hard Situation.......2007-02-17
Khalidi poses the question of why Palestinian political development is so weak, certainly not up to the standards of contemporary high-income republics.
By itself, this question might not be very interesting, as the high-income countries' level of political development is so difficult to achieve that its absence hardly needs explanation. People who think that England and France set the norm may not remember those countries' internal wars of religion in the 1600s and the ruthless methods used to integrate their territories. Thus, the Palestinian experience should hardly surprise us.
Khalidi's purpose in answering the question about political development, however, is to show what the Palestinians' efforts have been.
Khalidi's main point is that there was no sustained effort to create a coherent Palestinian political structure in the first forty years after the early 1920s, when partition first created a territory termed "Palestine." He relates that Palestinians initially tried to work through the British rather than to set themselves up as independent. Then, after Israeli forces expelled them in the 1947-48 run-up to Israel's formal independence on May 15, 1948, Palestinians' lives were simply too disrupted for political organization.
In the subsequent period from the early 1960s on, Khalidi gives the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) credit for three essential achievements in political organization: (1) winning most Palestinians' recognition of the PLO as their first-ever central point for political cooperation, (2) winning Arab countries' recognition of a Palestinian national cause, and (3) finally winning global recognition that the Palestinian nation existed.
At the same time, Khalidi also identifies three failings: (1) not setting up internal democracy and efficient service bureaucracies, (2) not being categorical enough when they gave up armed resistance to the Israelis after the mid-1970s, and (3) neglecting Palestinians outside the West Bank and Gaza when Israel allowed the PLO leadership to return in the mid-1990s.
Khalidi's final chapter is a separate essay on Israel's progress toward absorbing the West Bank, the role of the peace process in promoting this, and the likelihood that it has made a Palestinian state impossible.
Returning to the history, it is unfortunate that Khalidi does not clarify the impact of partition, which separated Palestine from the rest of the Arab nation, including the political centers -- Damascus, Beirut, and Cairo. Khalidi points out that the Arab provisional government in Damascus opposed partition and wanted a unified nation. But Khalidi does not say what the people suddenly isolated in Palestine thought about the Arab nation. In particular, did they have the sense that building separate Palestinian political institutions would work against Arab goals and play into British hands?
Indeed, given the degree of longstanding social interaction across the borders partition created, is it objectively reasonable to speak of Palestine in 1920 as a nation? Or was it rather one portion of a partitioned nation?
The writing in Khalidi's historical chapters is indeed somewhat repetitive (a carryover from Arabic poetry's style?), but interested readers will persevere.

Customer Reviews:
A MUST READ for any bird owner!!!!.......2007-07-13
This is an amazing book! There are so many tips and suggestions for correcting or preventing bad behaviors in birds. The ideal time to read this would be before even bringing the parrot home, but it is a must read for all bird owners. The parrot world is evolving and new things are being learned all the time.....read it to learn!!!!
Great Learning Tool.......2007-04-10
I am new to parrots and this book literally takes you by the hand and addresses whatever issue you are having. I highly recommend it.
A very good beginner book!.......2007-03-26
My hubbie decided to petsit his uncle's macaw but we had no idea why she acted the way she did. She would screech loudly, try to bite us, & if we tried to get her down from our shoulder she would run to our back. We needed information. This book didn't disappoint! Chapter 2 was a treasure trove of information. It had games you could play with your parrot, also how to get your parrot to stop biting. The wobble correction method is what we have been using. Chapter 3 was about developing behavior patterns. This chapter was great in helping us realize height does matter. We were letting Baby D(parrot's name) get on our shoulder and also letting her roam on the top of her cage. She was getting very aggresive and we couldn't understand why.Letting her spend time in places that were high was making her think she was the boss. Chapter 5 Common behavior problems talks about dealing with screaming, chewing, and boredom in birds. It also talks more about the height factor. Chapter 7 talks about reading parrot body language and the pitfalls of leaving your parrot home alone all day.
I learned alot by this book. Parrots are alot of responsibility but they are also lovable. I know they have times when they screech and scream but if you follow this book you should you should have a better behaved parrot most of the time. I see some impovement already in baby D. This book has loads of information that should help you understand all about your new parrot.
EXCELENT.......2007-02-06
One of the best books with a thorough guidance how to treat your parrot and skills for a well behaved bird.
Help with problem parrots........2007-01-12
This book is filled with great ideas for how to deal with every crazy parrot behavioural problem you might encounter, as well as practical strategies to keep them from developing in the first place!
Book Description
Beautifully written and taking us into an exotic land, Karen Connelly’s debut novel The Lizard Cage is a celebration of the resilience of the human spirit.
Teza once electrified the people of Burma with his protest songs against the dictatorship. Arrested by the Burmese secret police in the days of mass protest, he is seven years into a twenty-year sentence in solitary confinement. Cut off from his family and contact with other prisoners, he applies his acute intelligence, Buddhist patience, and humor to find meaning in the interminable days, and searches for news in every being and object that is grudgingly allowed into his cell.
Despite his isolation, Teza has a profound influence on the people around him. His very existence challenges the brutal authority of the jailers, and his steadfast spirit inspires radical change. Even when Teza’s criminal server tries to compromise the singer for his own gain, Teza befriends him and risks falling into the trap of forbidden conversation, food, and the most dangerous contraband of all: paper and pen.
Yet, it is through Teza’s relationship with Little Brother, a twelve-year-old orphan who’s grown up inside the walls, that we ultimately come to understand the importance of hope and human connection in the midst of injustice and violence. Teza and the boy are prisoners of different orders: only one of them dreams of escape and only one of them will achieve it—their extraordinary friendship frees both of them in utterly surprising ways.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing - A Must Read.......2007-09-26
This book is amazing. I think we owe a great debt to Karen Connelly for writing this novel which eloquently exposes the brutality of the military regime in Burma while celebrating the beauty of Burmese culture, food and buddhism. This book is a great contribution and has the potential to entertain through its strong writing and story line while educating readers about the reality of life in Burma. On a grand scale, Connelly has found a way to write beautifully and inspiringly about humanity with all its darkness, flaws, hope and gentleness. Well Done!
Compulsive.......2007-07-18
A common enough technique - a book that begins with its ending and circles back to tell the story. The problem here, and why I picked it up three times before realizing just how good it was, is that we're in Burma living among characters who have between one and three names. It makes those first pages a burden, lifted of course, when you finish the book and turn to them again. The Lizard Cage is a dense novel, lush with the words, extremely well paced (after that first chapter) and for the most part, an absolute pleasure. Burma is a mystery to me. I can't account for the accuracy of the book, but in the end, novels are supposed to convince you of their own worlds, not reflect the real one. In that, Lizard Cage succeeds as you step into a world of prison brutality, rape, torture and tiny moments of transcendence. Occasionally Connelly lets her words get the better of her and brief bumps of purple prose jar an otherwise smooth four hundred odd pages. It's quite a feat in the end, a Canadian woman stepping into the shows of a collection of Burmese men, so hats off and heads bent.
Beautiful writing in a strong story!.......2007-07-13
How can a book be both beautiful and luminescent, and also dark and painful? The pain is because this book is based on stories out of Burmese prisons. Connelly, the author of Touch the Dragon, a Thai Journal, lived for almost two years on the Thai/Burma border among Burmese exiles and dissidents.
Teza, a young singer, is sentenced to prison for 20 years for his work against the repressive regime in Burma. Teza supports dissident leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who was placed under house arrest. (Even though she won the election in 1989--this part of the book is based on actual events).
Teza has been in prison for seven years, in solitary confinement. Teza calls his home the Lizard Cage, because of the importance of the little green lizards in his life. Sometimes he catches and eats them to help keep him alive. And sometimes he watches them, because they inspire him. One day he has a new warder, a food server, a young orphaned boy.
The book follows their relationship, and their relationship with the Senior Jailor Chit Niang and other prisoners. They all seem to be a sort of insane dysfunctional family--one trying to survive incredibly brutal and inhumane conditions. Teza and the boy both find a different sort of release, with the boy truly freeing Teza.
There is brutality and pain in the world and there is genocide, torture, families being driven apart, disease, abandoned orphaned children. It is hard to remember all this in our privileged, calm and stable lives. Can we do something? Yes, sometimes we can--and should.
Is this book easy to read? Is it fun? There are light and beautiful moments, moments of transcendent joy. Connelly is also a poet, and her words are strung together almost like a long prose poem, like natural pearls strung on a cord, warm to the touch and reflecting light.
Armchair Interviews says: Hard to read because of the subject but beautifully written.
The Lizard Cage.......2007-03-16
Imagine serving a 20 year sentence for writing protest songs, or eating lizards (raw) to ward off starvation and disease. Imagine that possession of a pen could add another 10 years to your sentence, along with beatings and disgusting tortures. This is Teza's world, as narrated by Karen Connelly, in this honest portrayal of life under the generals in Burma (Myanmar). Connelly doesn't pull any punches. Nor does she offer false hopes and solutions for her characters to assuage the reader's sensibilities. This can make the book, at times, a hard read. However, don't let this put you off. Despite the horrors, one thing shines through - the indefatigable human spirit. Karen Connelly is a poet and this is her first novel. Her poetic talent is evident in the descriptions of the beauty of Burma, its history and its people. Her poet's soul leads me to my one minor criticism - I think it sometimes interrupts the story's momentum. But this small quibble doesn't prevent me from giving the book 5 stars.
I had known a little about Burma and its problems before reading The Lizard Cage, but had not given it much thought, because of, I suppose, lack of media coverage. A sad comment on our media (and me). Anyone who reads this book will surely be unable to extinguish Burma from their thoughts and, hopefully, will add their voice to the campaign against the inhumane regime of the generals.

Small book.......2007-07-23
I haven't had a chance to read the book yet, but it's much smaller than I expected it to be. For $30, I expected a little more content that what could be contained in the size of a thin mass market paperback.
Nice book!.......2005-09-26
Very good, with clear and concise language, a must for who's seeking an airline crew job.
An important guide for pilot interviewees.......2001-10-30
Very informative and well written. Ms. Cage obviously understands the ins and outs of this industry and the information contained in this book will prepare anyone for a professional interview with a major airline.
Not that great.......2001-09-28
Not a really bad book, but nothing really earth shattering in it to make it worth the price. Another "aviation employment" book marketed to us poor saps who are willing to try (and buy) anything to help us get a flying job.
Helped me do a great interview at Continental.......2000-08-15
Better than just a list of interview questions, this book shows you how to answer using success stories from your past. Even an applicant with limited experience can use this "story" format to answer questions and help the interviewer get to know him or her in the most positive light. In my interview I was able to SHOW that I had leadership/decision-making/problem solving skills by drawing from past experiences and showing the interviewer how I had handled each challenge. The book requires some mental effort and preparation, but it will be time well spent.
I have recommended this book to a friend seeking a flight attendant job as well. Actually, I think the principles here are applicable to any job interview if you know what qualities and qualifications the employer is looking for and apply the principles.

Book Description
"The Complete Guide To Raising Pet Birds For Profit, The Greatest Backyard Business Ever" is written as a practical guide for the pet lover who wishes to make an income breeding, raising and selling small pet birds. Author James McDonald made his living for 25 years with exotic birds and animals before retiring in 2000 at the age of 50. He raised tens of thousands of birds himself and built a nationwide distributorship that supplied pet shops with parakeets, cockatiels, lovebirds, finches and other small pet birds. Through the years he has helped many people start their own successful backyard business breeding these small pet birds to help supply the pet industry with the millions that are sold annually. Now, for the first time ever he has put his proven methods of success in the form of a book. The book explains how to make an excellent income, either part-time or full-time breeding the most popular species of pet birds. Many breeders using these methods make from $500 to $2000 monthly on a part-time basis while full timers make much more. You will learn how you can live anywhere and ship your birds to the nationwide market. The book is actually 6 books in one. It completely covers both cage and colony breeding methods of parakeets, cockatiels, lovebirds and finches, as well as marketing and shipping. Additionally, three chapters completely cover how to become a wholesale distributor of pet birds, which can be a very lucrative business. Although the book was written with the pet lover in mind that wishes to make an income breeding birds, there is a tremendous amount of information in the book that the hobbyist will find useful as well. Many management tips and pointers can be used by the beginner as well as the experienced person to increase yearly production, thus increasing profits. As a well known animal lover, author James McDonald sold approximately one million exotic birds before his retirement and he reminds the readers of the moral obligations and responsibilities of animal ownership and encourages the reader to always accept those responsibilities by providing humane and adequate care for their birds at all times. The book is not written in some far out technical jargon or academic terminology, but in an easy to understand style with plain and simple, down to earth language by someone who has actually "been there and done that." It is a must have book if you enjoy breeding birds and would like to make a profit while doing something that you truly enjoy.
Customer Reviews:
An exceptional book packed to the brim with worthwhile tips........2004-12-31
Aside from the occasional typo or grammatical error, I found this to be the best of its type since Wendell Levi's Making Pigeons Pay. In some ways, in fact, this book is superior in scope to Levi's.
A great deal of the book is oriented to pet bird wholesaling. There also are well-written chapters for each of the top sellers - parakeets, cockatiels, finches and love birds. I found each of the bird breeding-specific chapters to be helpful, although further details should be included in a future edition.
I am hopeful the author, or another capable writer with experience, will soon issue a similar book for the more lucrative Parrots, Macaws, and so forth.
I further also hope somebody with experience will soon offer books for the other pet trade groupings - reptiles; marsupials, rodents, and so forth.
Hmmm...perhaps Breaking Free can do so and can then publish an Encyclopedia of Pets & Exotic Animals? Guess what...it is now in preparation and completion is scheduled on 1 September 2005. Interested parties should email LJ at ljsbreakingfree dot com.
We at LJ's Breaking Free intend to list this book for readers for it truly is one of those gems that people can use to find their freedom from corporate wage-slavery.
We also shall be seeking the publisher/author's permission for e-Book rights. In time, this book should be at the top of our best seller list - Bill Anderson, (LJ), Breaking Free.
Great information, very complete.......2004-11-23
A very well written book that will hold your interest so much that you will find it hard to put down. Very thorough, with step by step instructions on breeding, feeding, housing, and marketing of parakeets, cockatiels, lovebirds and finches, either as a hobby or commercially. The most complete book of its kind.
Great Book.......2004-08-18
This book includes a lot of information that would take the average person years to learn. Not only does it cover breeding various species of birds, but it covers different ways of marketing them as well. It even covers shipping birds via the airlines, which opens up larger markets for most people. If you enjoy birds and are considering turning your hobby into a small business, this book is a must have.
Excellent book on raising small birds.......2004-01-20
I was looking for a secondary income when I ran across this book. I found that the pet business is a huge business that I had never really thought about. I have always loved birds and animals and this book had the information that I needed to get started with a small business of my own. After reading the book through twice, I knew this was something that I would enjoy doing. I located a wholesale buyer in my area who agreed to buy my production. The book is well written, very interesting, and easy to understand. After reading the book you can clearly see that the author is an animal lover and is very much interested in the welfare of the birds, since he discourages anyone from entering this business solely for the financial rewards. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to breed the smaller types of pet birds, either for fun or as a small business.
Best book I've read in awhile !.......2004-01-08
After leaving a 20 year career with the government, I was hoping to find something more creative. While looking for information on buying a pet bird for my daughter , I happened across not only a great book about birds but also a new career. Although I will be starting at the hobby level at first , with the straight forward advice and information in this book I really feel I can expand this to any level. This book reflects 25 years of some one elses hard work and experience. Not only did I find the information on raising birds fascinating but there is a wealth of knowledge for anyone looking to start their own business.
