5 out of 5 stars My two year old's fave book.......2007-08-23

This book is great. It is the first book my two year old "read" himself...and my four year old loves it as well. Classic read - we like it so much we just bought it for our new niece, confident she will grow to love it as much as her cousins do! I'd give it six stars if I could!

3 out of 5 stars Beware if you don't already have nighttime fears.......2007-07-12

Without much forethought, I pulled this book out of the closet to read to my nearly 4-year-old. Despite the child's unfortunate use of a weapon, a toy gun, to scare the monster/nightmare, this might have been an amusing way to talk about talk about 'things that bump in the night'. Unfortunately, in our house, it created worries about 'nightmares'. My child has no clue what a nightmare is, just that it's something she should be afraid of, causing an anxiety about falling asleep. After several discussions about the fact that a nightmare is a bad dream (like my childhood nightmare of losing my blankie), and how to handle them, my daughter continues to ask, "Mama, what color your nightmare?" English is my daughter's second language, making abstract concepts a bit more difficult to grasp. I wish I'd considered that before reading the book. Please don't read this to your child unless you're sure she/he can understand the message.

5 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this book.......2007-03-26

My almost three year old daughter thinks this book is great. It is wonderful how the feared is befriended. The pictures are wonderful and very evocative. Enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars Kids Love This Book.......2007-01-12

When my daughter was two she quickly memorized this book and created and repeatedly used a play on words that tickled her pink. I've read it a zillion times to her and others and am prompted with the word, "again" when I am done. The pictures are very detailed and tell a story all their own.

I recently bought this book for another 2 year old who would choose this book over all the others on the shelf. My daughter is now 21. This book is timeless.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book for eager beginning readers.......2006-11-11

My grandson loved this book! He's beginning to read and was ready for books with a bit more of a plot and more than a single line on a page. He loved this book. It appealed to his imagination and had him in giggles looking forward to what he'd find on the next page. I recommend it highly for those children reading at the first - second grade level.

Book Description

Awarded the Silver and Bronze plaques for books by the San Francisco Society of Illustrators.

The Pied Piper of Hamelin is a true story. On June 26, 1284, events occurred, so extraordinary, they have been talked about and wondered at from that day to this one. What really happened during that fateful summer (and why) is a fascinating mystery. It may never be solved, and yet, the famous case of The Pied Piper and his misadventures in Hamelin Town remains relevant and compelling nonetheless.

The origin of what has come to be known as "The Legend of the Pied Piper" can be traced back seven hundred years. Literary scholars and historians differ, debate, and speculate about the facts of the matter. The Children's Crusade and The Dance Epidemic, a disease that blazed in the Dark Ages, are popular theories to explain the circumstances surrounding the folk tale. Barbara Tuchman writes in her wonderful book, Distant Mirror, that the legend of The Pied Piper arose from an outbreak of the plague. The modern-day citizens of Hamelin attribute the mass exodus of their ancestors to the forced colonization of Eastern Europe.

The brothers Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm heard the story on their philological trip across the German countryside at the turn of the eighteenth century. By then, the saga of The Pied Piper had been passed by word-of-mouth for many generations. The tale had been told and retold for more than five hundred years. The Grimm brothers wrote a comprehensive version of the oral history, but did not include it in their collection of Children and Household Tales (better known as Grimm's Fairy Tales) because they considered the narrative to be of social import, not a fable for children.

The legend was, by-in-large, a local one, until 1842, when Robert Browning's poetic account for young people was published. His rhyming retelling has so much appeal, it advanced a humble German river town from commonplace to world famous and immortalized a rat catcher from itinerant stranger to infamous antihero. Mr. Browning embellished the story to suit his fancy. (For rhyming reasons of his own, he changed the date to July 22, 1376.)

Word pictures dance off the pages in Browning's poem. His Pied Piper of Hamelin is so imaginative, it inspired the great illustrators of children's storybooks - Kate Greenaway, Arthur Rackham, Margaret Tarant, and Maxfield Parrish. (Parrish's mural of The Pied Piper, leading the children out of Hamelin and up Koppelberg Hill, hangs proudly over the bar at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco.)

Now, in the 1999 publication of the Robert Browning classic, the witty and wise Bud Peen adds his name to the golden roster of illustrators. Peen's thoroughly modern style is in cunning counterpoint to the medievalist discipline he adopted to suit the subject. In preparation for the project, he reacquainted himself with the paintings, illuminated manuscripts, tapestries, furnishings, architecture, clothing, and day-to-day comings and goings of life in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Combining state-of-the-art technologies with the spirit of medieval masterworks, Peen creates his vibrant electronic paintings - and a feast for the eyes they are.

The Pied Piper of Hamelin is a cautionary tale with words to the wise. There is an old-English proverb that goes: "He who pays the piper may call the tune." But the phrase simply stating the facts, painted on the stained glass window of Hamelins church, says it best of all [loosely translated] "In the year 1284, on John's and Paul's day, was the 26th of June - 130 children born in Hamelin were abducted by a piper dressed in a many colored coat, and lost at the top of Koppelberg Hill forever."

5 out of 5 stars How can you hate Freddy?.......2002-11-29

I have read these books, the entire series, all 18 or so of them, once every 3-4 years for the last 2 decades, and I love them all! Having them republished is a great boon to the world! This one in particular is just vintage Freddy, it doesn't strand out for any particular reason, just excellent like the rest.

3 out of 5 stars A Better One.......2002-05-18

A generally amusing Freddy adventure. My favorite line: "Mr. Bleech was a pretty mean man. Anyway, nobody in his senses would expect a kind action from a man who would steal from a rhinoceros."
Brooks had such a gift for gentle and humorous characterization that I wish he had had a stronger editor. I would enjoy the books about twice as much if somebody had red pencilled his compulsive and relentless use of "pretty" as an intensifier (see above quote)! I drop them when reading the books to my six year old son.
My favorites: "Freddy the Politician" (unfortunately, this volume has lost its original title, "Wiggins for President," the best title Brooks ever came up with!), "Freddy the Detective," "Freddy and the Ignormus." "Freddy goes to Florida," the first and perhaps easiest, is a good start for younger children.

I teach preschool aged children and we use this story when talking about fears. When I read it I start in a whispered tone, and when she sees the "something" in the atic I yell at the same time she does. The children jump a mile and laugh like mad. We then take a good look at the "something" and the girl. We all belive the "something" is more scard than the girl. I recomend this and any of Mayer's Little Critter books to any one with children.

Book Description

Implicit in many folk and fairy tales is the question, 'Then what?'

After Hamelin picks up the story where the Robert Browning poem -- or other tellings of The Pied Piper of Hamelin -- leaves off. In a quest that is both contemporary and timeless, Richardson creates a magical world through inventive wordplay, uninhibited imagination and a facility with rhyme. Here is a raconteur who spins a narrative tale that takes readers into strange lands inhabited by unusual characters, both good and evil, where adventure abounds and unlikely saviors emerge.

Penelope is 101 years old, but she can remember the story like it happened yesterday. On the morning of her eleventh birthday, she wakes to discover she can no longer hear. It is on this same day that the Piper returns to Hamelin to spirit the children away in an evil act of revenge upon the townspeople. Spared because she is deaf to the Piper's bewitching tune, Penelope is left to grieve the loss of her friends and beloved sister Sophy until Cuthbert, the wise man of the village, reveals that Penelope possesses the unusual gift of deep dreaming. Armed only with a charm from Cuthbert and her own courage, Penelope enters the land of sleep on a treacherous quest to rescue the stolen children.

There is suspense, humor and high excitement (wrapped in dark undercurrents) as Penelope and the companions she meets along the way -- Scally, her trusted cat; Alloway, the blind harpist; Ulysses, a three-legged dog; and Quentin, a dragon who loves skipping -- journey to the Piper's mountain fortress. Their combined wits and talents see them through strange landscapes and close calls. In a thrilling climax played out in a mysterious place between dreaming and waking, they triumph over the Piper and set the children of Hamelin free.

5 out of 5 stars Gets better with time.......2005-03-21

After Hamelin might be marketed as children's lit, but that demeans it. The characters are real and alive. Even the cat. How many authors have tried to make an animal into a character and failed? But Scallywaggle is a full-fledged character. And who ever thought of a flower-arranging dragon? I'm still working on my re-read, so some of the details that I have aren't great. Though I hate the children's sections, I love fairy tales, and wish everyone would remember C.S. Lewis's dedication of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Children's lit is often an incompetent author trying to sell to kids who don't care about quality. After Hamelin, though, should go to the fairy tale section. I hate Disney retellings: they make fairy tales cheap and simplistic happily-ever-afters. Richardson knows his story of the Pied Piper well, and does with it exactly what everyone should do with fairy tales: he takes it, adds some stuff, changes some characters, adds events, and puts in beautifully handled prose. He reinvents the story for a more modern reader, and makes it more accessible. Penelope isn't "charming" in the sense that she isn't the sweet, adorable little girl, nor is she the tomboyish one who defies the rules. There's no title on the list of character cliches to fit her, or any characters in this book. They're all their own selfs, and that's what makes this book stand above the masses of fairy-tale takeoffs that plague book stores. There's not much else to say. I read this first when I was 10, and now at 14, and will keep reading it throughout my life. Read this book, and remember, above all things, one: we are never too old for fairy tales, and fairy tales aren't for children alone. I'll spare the rant on that here, but read After Hamelin, regardless of your age, and rediscover the fact that we all have dreams and goals, and that no matter how fantastical they are, they are true.

5 out of 5 stars Pipe, Pipe, Pipe away Piper!.......2003-12-05

In this woderfully weaved tale of a girl, Penelope who is 101 years recalls upon her childhood adventure in saving the children of Hamelin. Once you read this book you will want to know more and more until the book ends. But imagination doesn't only end at the last pages for some. Many may want to make a tale of their own. Penelope recalls in extraordinary detail and Bill Richardson has done a wonderful job of making the pipers music in this book turn you eyes to look at the story. The cover speaks alot itself and one look can tell you the meaning " a picture is worth a thousand words." You may get annoyed with the repeating parts where she always says she's 101, but other than that its a good story.
Penelope is a skipper. Not any ordinary skipper, she's a skipping harpers daughter. Ever since she was little there has always had music in her life. Then on the day of her elevening, she goes deaf. The same day the piper comes to pipe away the children with his magical net of music from his pipe. All children but two. Alloway, a blind apprentice who stays with Govan, Penelope's father and of course our heroine, Penelope. To save the children of Hamelin she must go to a world both seen and unseen. Where anything can happen, into a land of dreaming. The stakes are high and in this dream world you just can't wish yourself away from danger. With a wacky group of companions she embarks on her journey... the rest is for you to find out...

A wave of babynappings has terrified parents from San Diego to Portland. And when the Pied Piper--named for the penny flute he leaves in the cribs of his victims--claims his first Seattle infant, the investigation draws in homicide detective Lou Boldt. Assigned temporarily to Intelligence so he can spend more time with his kids while his wife is hospitalized for chemotherapy, Boldt's role is to keep the FBI out of the Seattle Police Department's way. But FBI special agent Gary Flemming is a tough adversary--so tough it almost seems as if he's intentionally sabotaging the SPD's investigation. Then the Pied Piper snatches Boldt's own daughter, promising that unless Boldt throws both the Feds and the SPD off his trail he'll never see his child again. Caught between his professional obligations and his fear for Sarah's life, Boldt launches his own private manhunt with the help of John La Moia, his replacement in homicide, and police psychologist Daphne Matthews, his closest friend in the department. They form a sub rosa task force under the noses of the Feds and the SPD, and soon discover how the Piper has managed to stay a step ahead of the police, elude capture, and find his small victims. The chase moves from Seattle to Portland to New Orleans, culminating in a thrilling denouement in the daffodil fields of Washington's Skagit Valley. Combining strong characterizations with an impressive command of both policing and pacing, Ridley Pearson, author of Chain of Evidence and Beyond Recognition, delivers another sure winner in this outing for Lou Boldt. --Jane Adams

The Bookcassette Adapter gives you balance control on your headphones and is so easy to use: Plug it into the stereo jack of your personal tapeplayer and then plug your headphones into the other side. The Bookcassette Adapter Works ONLY on Stereo Tapeplayers.

If you plan on listening to Bookcassette audio books on a stereo system where you can adjust the sound between the left and right speakers separately, such as a rack system with separate left and right speaker controls or a car stereo with a left and right balance dial, you will be able to listen to Bookcassette audio books without a problem. If you plan on listening to these audio books on a portable cassette player that does not have this capability, such as a Walkman with headphones, you will require an adapter.

As I said, it would be cheaper to buy it on the Internet, especially on eBay, instead of directly from the company (Brilliance Corporation) at 1-800-697-6797

1 out of 5 stars Pied Piper With a Flat Flute.......2006-06-08

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Ridley Peason's books until I read this overlong diatribe.

The book is way too long. If he cut it down by about 150 pages, it would have been much, much better. Examples of his excessive writing are:
1- The 5 sex scenes between LaMoia and Hill. Two would have achieved his intended objective.
2- The episode in the airport. This could have been halved and still maintained its intended effect.
3- The final 100 pages could have been halved as well.
4- Chicken ending... vague and sucked. Flemming should have been arrested for murder, plain and simple. And re LeMoia being reinstated, etc., that part was vague as well.

In this one Pearson lost the plot and was trying to be too detailed which ruined the book... How many movies have you seen that could have been cut down? The same applies here.

Pearson is a good writer and I hope his anal writing in PP is not carried over into future books.

I gave this one star based, not on other books, but on other Pearson books.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best suspense/mystery I have ever read.......2005-11-23

This was my first Ridley Pearson, and I am so thankful to my friend for suggesting him! It was everything I look for in a mystery. Clever plot, believable characters, building suspense, and a satisfying ending. This is one of the few mysteries that actually uses it's brains to catch the bad guy, instead of discovering him by accident. The evidence does its job here, and they use it in ingenious ways. A great book!

3 out of 5 stars A Musical Turn Of Events Of Sorts........2005-10-01

In New Orleans, there is a home for orphan boys. Where do they come from? There is a kidnapper who travels the cities along the West coast in search of prey; called the Pied Piler because he leaves his calling card, a pennywhistle flute, in the cribs of the babies he has taken. When the FBI enters the search for this criminal, Lou Boldt in Seattle decides to take matters in his own hands along with skilled accomplices John and Daphne.

Because the kidnapper seems to be receiving information from inside the task force, which enables him to keep one step ahead of apprehension, he knows what is going on. As a consequence, he takes the detective's baby girl as bait to get him off his trail. He was a master at snatching unattended babies (and some he targeted) and disappear as the traveled from city to city.

Things get complex as Lou tries to rescue his little girl. He'd taken his wife, a cancer victim, out to eat in an old train car, one of Seattle's fish-house restaurants with ambiance. When the Piper took his child that evening, he felt like "he had stolen his life." Tracing him from a low-rent district to a meth lab in Seattle, then on to Portland (where their old theater has a marquee like the Tennessee in Knoxville -- identical in design), where things gets fishy, and on to New Orleans.

This suspense story of deceit and betrayal will keep you alive with the spirit and determination of a father out to find his child alive. The Piper is tracked to the home for destitute orphans in New Orleans. There was an orphanage in Memphis, Tennessee, where the matron was selling children to childless couples. In the movie, 'The Island,' breeders were chosen to have full-term babies for adoption, then disposed of gloriously as she thought she had been chosen to move to the Island.

Ridley Pearson has written PROBABLE CAUSE, NEVER LOOK BACK, and BEYOND RECOGNITION. His characters are believable and true-to-life in that kind of world. He keeps the readers coming back for more in his continuing sagas of unsavory happenings in the underworld of Seattle.

4 out of 5 stars Great twists - good book........2004-09-20

Just to let you know, I heard this book on tape, rather than having read it. I will discuss specific issues about the book on tape aspect of it at the end.

This was a scary, sad thriller. Children are being abducted from their bedrooms across Seattle and, in reality, all across the country and Seattle's finest are out to stop the kidnappings. Obstacles in their path include very poor teamwork with the FBI and there's another kidnapping very close to home...but I won't spoil it for you by telling you who.

Good police work ensues and it is satisfying to go along with the police as they slowly amass their clues and get closer and closer. Once the reader finds out the truth, there's still quite a bit of work to do to wrap it all up - including a cross-country chase.

Its a good, good thriller and I would have given it 5 stars but I am reviewing the abridged book on tape and I have some complaints:
1. The reader does great dialogue but is poor at reading non-dialogue - everything sounds breathless and over-hyped. Very William Shatner-esque, if you catch my meaning.
2. The abridgement apparantly left out a part of the story concerning Idaho - it is barely referenced on the first tape and then the suspect has an injury on the face due to an accident suffered in Idaho that everyone seems to know about.
3. The tape is strangely edited. For example, side one - tape one ends in the middle of a sentence. The sentence starts over again on side 2 but still...

1 out of 5 stars I wanted to like it, but..........2007-09-30

I have a 3-yr-old daughter named Hazel so I was thu-rilled to find this book at the library (a book about ME!) I decided if it was even slightly good we would buy it for sure. So clearly I went into this hoping and wanting to love the book. Unfortunately it started bad, with Hazel being sent off on errands by herself, and only got worse, with Hazel getting lost (obviously she was too young to go out alone), then being cornered by bullies, then having her doll and carriage destroyed by them. At this point in the story I started making up my own words, changing the story for my daughter so it would be a little easier to enjoy.

I was hoping it could be salvaged by Hazel's mother out looking for her (worried because she didn't come home), finding her and comforting her at least. But instead out of nowhere her mom gets swept up by a strong wind, landed in the tree above Hazel, and starts booming commands to the bullies to fix the doll and carriage. It just seemed very disjointed as a story and I didn't find what the mom did all that amazing - fighting Hazel's fight for her instead of using the experience to comfort and teach. It was just weird, and neither me nor my daughter wanted to read it again.

Sometimes I wonder how some books get published.

5 out of 5 stars All-time favorite.......2004-10-26

My daughter, who is now 5 1/2, absolutely loved this book from the time she was about 2. It is a delightful story and the artwork is whimsical and fun. When she was little, she particularly loved the last page of the book where Hazel and her mother have their picnic. She would point out each type of food and name it for me. To this day, when she has a piece of toast with jam, she says, "I'll have a piece of toast with jam from the jelly man."

5 out of 5 stars Magical fable of a mom overcoming bullies.......2000-06-24

I adore this book - Wells' usual humor and art full of colorful details is part of that. I've thought of it as great for moms - single moms too, BTW - Hazel's mom just knows when she needs help and rescues her from bad times. But I realize as I review this book that the text raises scary topics too - Hazel goes off by herself to the bakery [what age is Hazel and where does SHE live! that happens in another Wells' fav of mine, Bunny Cakes - they're badgers, maybe badgers are more trusting than human moms!] Then more scary stuff - Hazel gets lost and kids in the park are mean to her. It might be reassuring to all readers, parents and kids, that Hazel's mom miraculously heals all, but I guess this is best to read when you want to talk about something scary that has happened or is worrying your child - because if she/he wasn't already scared of kids being mean, this book would do it! The message of a strong, protective mom applies best when there are difficult people with whom your child needs help, because this only works out idyllically for Hazel and her mom, not with the kids made to fix Hazel's doll Eleanor. I counsel parents-to-be who are worried their child will someday be teased [because they're adopted or conceived with donor sperm, the topic of my book!] and this might help someone laughingly reflect on the power of love to make things all work out right - with the help of a ladyfinger or two!

5 out of 5 stars A new favorite.......1998-03-29

My three-year-old daughter was immediately drawn into this wonderful story of a Mom who comes to the rescue. I still have days when I wish my mom could rescue me, so I enjoyed this tale, too. And the artwork is pure delight!

5 out of 5 stars A great book for children and parents to read together!.......1996-07-31

Hazel's Amazing Mother is a wonderful book, full of excitement and adventure. Hazel is her mother's biggest fan -- and for good reason! Her mother comes to the rescue in a very unusual way! Read it with someone you love

Book Description

5 out of 5 stars I loved this story.......2006-09-19

Green Wilma is an adoring, rhyming tale of a girl who wakes up one morning and discovers she is green. This story is full of bright colors that fill the pages of this book and show the personality of the characters by illustrating the eyes bulging out of their heads. This book expresses the talent of children's imagination. Your children will love the characters and the silly illustrations that give hints about Wilma's metamorphosis. The ending was a surprise because something happened that I would have never expected. Green Wilma is a sweet childish book that your children will adore.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely outstanding.......2006-09-19

After reviewing the book called Green Wilma, I discovered it was not only a satisfying book but one which made my eyes water and lurch out from their sockets. This book is about a young girl, Wilma who wakes up one morning with an appetite for flies and soon discovers she is a green amphibian. Her parents, feet trembling on the floor, appear scared half to death by Wilma's slimy, green, new texture. Rebelling against her parent's orders, Wilma goes to school and ruins other kid's appetites by her repulsive act of devouring filthy, many-eyed flies. As I easily turned each page filled with detailed illustrations, the hilarious book approached the end. This book, even with me being a picky reviewer, I rate at 4.5 stars. Why, because my only unanswered question is, how does Wilma turn into a frog anyway? If the author would explain this phenomenon, I would gain more understanding of the book's main character, Wilma. The book Green Wilma, funny and entertaining, in my opinion is a book recommended to children and adults as well.

3 out of 5 stars I Sort of Liked This Book.......2006-09-14

The writing in Green Wilma was like a baby's board book. There were only three or four words on a page. The language, simple, unappealing, and childish, did not earn my liking. The book, absolutely no phrases contained in it, made me get really mixed up while reading it. It was hard to understand and hard to know what's happening with no phrases.

The pictures, simple images of people with bulging eyes, did not go with the story. The story was carefully written to rhyme, while the pictures were sloppily done. The people in the pictures have huge eyes, tiny bodies, tiny legs and arms. Because of these exaggerated features, I did not enjoy looking at them.

Green Wilma was very confusing in the ending. Something happens where the girl (Wilma) is chasing a fly into a pond. She jumps after it, catches it, and falls into the pond. Then the text says all frogs know better than to sit on a log while dreaming and there's a picture with a frog on a log. I think it is confusing because I wasn't sure if there's just a frog dreaming on a log or if there's really a girl named Wilma. Overall, I give this book three stars out of five stars. by Alina

1 out of 5 stars Sick!.......2007-09-22

This book was purchased for my son who is five to teach him about lying and telling the truth. It was not the way I remembered the story told as a child, actually I found it pretty sick! The wolf eats people and flosses his teeth with the bones of the people he eats. The pictures are pretty graphic, I really am surprised they were able to publish this book for children. I would look for the orginal story of the "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" I would not buy this copy!

1 out of 5 stars SHOWS BOY'S PENIS!! BEWARE!!!.......2006-05-05

This book shows the boy naked from behind with a penis hanging between his legs. Why in the world should a 5 year old see that!

2 out of 5 stars Didn't like it........2005-09-13

Didn't like this book as much as the story I remember as a child. I think this book didn't tell the "old-time" story of the Little Boy that Cried Wolf. I know it is supposed to teach a lesson, but my 4 year old won't let me read it to him again because he says it is too scary.

1 out of 5 stars Bad Commercial Policy.......2005-09-09

I need a copy of this story for my 4 year old daughter to stress the fact that she shouldn't cry unless something is truly wrong. In doing my due diligence and trying to see how this book appeared on the inside I found that although text will appear no full illustrations will show. Ergo I have no idea whether or not this book will be effective.

Needless to say I'm buying another version.

Shame on Pied Piper Paperbacks for not allowing parents to screen thei material for appropriatness.

5 out of 5 stars A moral tale with a twist.......2005-07-13

This is a great picture book for an older child. The end is not the traditional ending and would upset younger children. The illustrations are humorous and add a lighthearted feel to the book.

The bottom line: Enjoy this book, but read it with discrection.

This is a classic fable. My father used to tell it to me when I was young, and I was delighted to see it in book form. In this version, there is a fairly standard fairy-tale baddie - the wolf. In the version I knew as a child, it was a tramp, tricking a cook in a kitchen to prepare him a nourishing meal. I am sure there are other versions out there!

This one is nicely illustrated with bright, lively pictures. Although not a "favourite" book, it has found its place in the bedtime story repertoire.
