this just gets better, and Better, and BETTER!.......2007-06-19
At nearly 60 years old, and single all that time, I guess one could say "I never would have gotten this far if I couldn't cook!"
Well, that I CAN DO! I love to cook. Over the years I collected perhaps 125 cookbooks!?!? Guess what? I did not USE them! Over the years, I have kept paring down with each "move" (occasionally 'slipping' and picking up a new one here and there). I am now down to about 6 of my most favorite ones, and this one, "Good Housekeeping's Illustrated Cookbook" is the one that I reach for the most frequently. I have worn out two copies of it over the years, and I fully intend to always have a copy of it around until that "final" day!
This book just "begs" you to cook, to experiment, etc. Every recipe is aided by illustrations and clear instructions "as you go" to help you with everything you'd ever want to cook up in your kitchen at home. I have used dozens and dozens of cookbooks, and none of them have ever "aided" me as much as this wonderful kitchen helper.
Thanks, Good Housekeeping, you're the Best! ~operabruin
Not that simple stupid!!.......2007-04-02
I've had this book since college. It was the required book for my cooking class. And years later I have collected many other cookbooks, but I always find myself going back to Good Housekeeping. And the main reason is... new books appear to rely on the concept of "KISS - Keeping It Simple Stupid." But if your purpose is to create a memory of home cooking, keeping it simple just doesn't cut it. The other day I was searching recipes for cheesecakes. The Good Housekeeping had about 4 more ingredients than others provided. And I feel the reason is we're so stuck on shortcuts. If you want to "wow" people... simplicity wont' do it.
Great Basic Cookbook.......2007-01-27
This is a terrific cookbook for both the beginner and more experienced cook. There is a photo of every recipe and beautilful illustrations throughout the book. Some of my family's favorite recipes have come from this book and Good Housekeeping is a name you can always count on for quality.
Disappointed.......2007-01-11
Many years ago I received a Good Housekeeping Cookbook as a gift. It was practically my bible for cooking. In the interim I lost it, so decided to get a new Good Housekeeping book. Big Mistake! Very few recipes, and the ones in the book were uninteresting.
Worst cookbook in my kitchen.......2006-12-07
I've had this cookbook for years. I don't turn to it. I don't trust it. This cookbook has no credibility. At best, the recipes are pretty bland and boring. But usually, they're fatally flawed.
This book is not for someone who wants to learn how to cook. It's got all the sections you'd hope to see... some on equipment, some on technique. But those sections are sparse. They'll show you a bunch of knives, but not tell you what knives work well in what situations, or what knives you need. The cookbook has pictures of every dish, but the pictures are low quality and have bad color so you can't really trust the pictures.
But it's the recipes that are the real downfall. It talks about bullion cubes or cooking wine without explaining that they are convenient, but not good when you have time and want flavor. It gives that standard cooking temps for food, but doesn't mention you need to pull the food off the heat early or the food will be overcooked until the very end of the book in the microwave section. Recipes will say "cook until done" without ever explaining how you should be checking how fried eggs, for example, are cooking.
With this cookbook, you won't learn the best ways to cook eggs. You won't learn what "divan" means, even though there are a bunch of recipes divan here. It'll show you what different herbs and spices look like, but won't do well at helping you learn what goes well when. If you make all the recipes, take notes, and remember what didn't work, you'll learn a lot, but you'll have alot of poor recipes in the process.
Cookwise will teach you more about the fundamentals of cooking. William's Sonoma books have better pictures and better recipes. The Cook's Bible and Cook's Illustrated will teach you more about recipe variations and how to find recipes which work reliably. Saveur will give you better traditional food from across the globe.
This book will help you prop up a chair with a short leg. Beyond that, it's not worth much.
Book Description
Let Good Housekeeping hold your hand, guiding you as you prepare tasty diet-friendly meals! Remember: people who eat at home tend to be thinner than those who eat out often. Even those who don’t feel comfortable in the kitchen can easily make these recipes, which have all been triple-tested in the magazine’s acclaimed kitchens. Most of the recipes take no more than 20 minutes from stove to table—less time than picking up calorie-laden take-out. And they’re also nutritious, so they not only help you drop pounds, but also could lower the risks for heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other ailments.
But of course, vitamins and minerals don’t lure dieters to the table: taste does, and these dishes are absolutely delicious. Meals such as Asparagus, Red Potato, and Romano Frittata; Salmon with Tomato-Oliver Relish; Steak and Pepper Tortillas, and Tortellini with Zucchini and Radicchio are as palate-pleasing as they are weight-reducing. And leave room for desserts like Apricot Soufflé and Seattle Cappuccino Angel Food Cake.
Both veterans of the plan and newcomers will find this cookbook—which summarizes all the Supermarket Diet basics—invaluable!

Best plan I've found.......2007-02-11
This book really has a lot of good common sense. I like the recipes and they are easy to prepare. My whole family enjoys the recipes so I am not fixing something different for them.

The SINGLE greatest "general" cookbook I own.......2007-03-24
I stress "general" because I don't think books of this nature can or should be compared with ethnic or "specialty" cookbooks. If you want a book on Italian cooking or Chinese cooking or baking cakes, this isn't the book for you. This 1980 GEM by Zoe Coulson covers it all...if it's not between the covers of this book, maybe you should think twice about eating it. The greatest strength is that when you want a certain kind of "comfort food," there's a rock-solid recipe to satisfy. Case in point: "Country Pot Roast" on page 192, "Beef Stew" on page 202...these things taste like old-fashioned roadside diner food (or "just like mom used to make," if your mom was a good cook). It's not a Yuppie kind of South Beach low-carb "I'm OK, You're OK" cookbook. There ARE healthy and sensible choices in every category, however. I know that Good Housekeeping has a relatively new book out with the same title, but the 1980 book from Zoe Coulson is the one to get. And with the used prices offered by Amazon, there's no way you can go wrong.
A True Gem.......2006-08-31
This is a wonderful cookbook with the most beautiful color illustrations. A must for any kitchen!. Author of "Seasoned With Love: From My Family To Yours"
Great 1st cookbook for newlyweds/first time cooks.......2006-05-25
I received this book many years ago from a friend. It not only tells you how to cook but how to buy, what to look for, whats in season. Most of all EVERYTHING has a picture. I made the chicken cordon bleu a few years ago and now when I make it I usually have to triple the recipe for everyone I know shows for dinner that night. Its a bit of a complicated recipe but once you get the hang of it (rolling the chicken and securing with toothpicks) it is worth every mouth watering bite. This is by far the best wedding gift or first cookbook! It even shows you how to hard boil an egg...............
Fantastic cook book........2003-11-30
My girlfriend has this cook book, and after looking through it I knew I had to have one, too. I have it now and just ordered two more copies: one as a working copy for myself and one to give as a Christmas gift. Very easy to follow instructions, pictures and information about food that will make anyone a pro in the kitchen.
My favorite cookbook.......2000-04-10
This book shows you how-to, how long it will take, what you will need, how many it will serve, and what it will look like in any easy, step by step process.Recipes included range from sandwiches to gourmet entree's and desserts. I made creme' brulee! I have two copies, one to browse and one to use. I highly recommend this book for the novice, the acclaimed chef and everyone in between.

This book tells it all..........2005-10-25
I bought this book for my young bachelor son; but after going through it, I am going to keep it and buy him another one. It is up to date on cleaning products, and tells you about so many things that most other books of this type don't tell you; such as, diagrams on how to iron, how to sew. It tells you when fruits and vegetables are in season and how to tell when they are ripe. I think it is the most complete book of it's kind that I have ever seen. It would be excellent for newly weds, bachelor sons or daughters just getting their 1st apartment. And it is great for someone that has been housekeeping for over 30 years...like me!! Buy it, you won't regret it!
Excellent book.......2005-08-24
This book is chock full of valuable information, would make a wonderful gift for a newlywed couple or do-it-yourself couple.

good if you're absolutely clueless.......2007-07-17
because this book has pictures, you can see the "how-to"s of taking care of a baby, such as how to diaper, bathe, feed, nurse, change clothes, etc...
however, i was disappointed with the lack of updates. i got the book because i borrowed a friend who had an earlier addition, and you'd think that after 10+ years, the spelling mistakes would be corrected, and that makes me wonder how often the book is "updated."
Great book, a must have for any new parents........2007-06-16
We first checked this book out from our local library. We fell in love with it and just had to buy a copy for ourselves. It's a great book that contains a lot us useful real-life illustrations. We're first time parents and had so many questions about basic child-care. It helped answer some of the most simple questions to keep the baby clean, safe, and healthy. Now if only there was a manual on adulthood?!
Best Book for First Time Parents.......2007-04-26
This book is wonderful, the pictures are great and it covers so many differnt topics. From diaper changing, burping, colic, to first aid for your baby (both newborn and older).
I would recommend it to any first time parents.
Must have book for first-time parents.......2006-08-17
This is an indispensible book to me and my husband, giving guidance throughout pregnancy, to handling those first timid days at home, to caring for boo-boos of our energetic toddler. It covers a wide range of topics, with helpful pictures, and simple instructions. You MUST get your hands on this book if you are a first-time parent!
A Great Book for First-Time Parents.......2003-04-05
This is one of many pregnancy and baby books I have bought, and it's definitely one of my favorites. My husband and I are going to start trying to have a baby (our first) in about 5 months, so I'm reading all I possibly can right now. I've never been around infants, and I know absolutely nothing about how to take care of them. (I know- it's a scary thought me wanting to have one!!!) But this book has given me a lot of confidence, mainly because it's so detailed.
My favorite part of the book is the section on baby care- detailed steps of how to change a diaper, how to bathe the baby, how to dress the baby, etc. with very helpful (and beautiful) pictures. The section on pregnancy actually isn't very helpful- not very many details about the developing baby or changes in the mother; but it does give a basic overview and again, the pictures are beautiful. However, it does contain an excellent section on nutrition- spelling out (and showing) exactly what foods have what necessary nutrients for the pregnant woman, which I found very helpful. There's also a section on what to expect at each prenatal doctor's visit, which is very interesting.
All in all, this is a wonderful book with lots of good information and adorable pictures. If this isn't going to be your first baby, I don't think this book will be very helpful to you because you obviously know first-hand how to care for a baby already! However, it might be a good book for older siblings to look at (maybe age 10 and over)- so they can know what changes to expect and how they can help with the new baby. (There are pictures of the mother's naked body as it changes each month and of how to use a breast pump, so use discretion.) If you are expecting your first (or planning to be expecting soon, like me!!!) this book will be very helpful in teaching you the basics of caring for your baby.
P.S. My husband hasn't read any of my pregnancy/baby books, but he too liked the pictures in this one.

Excellent resource!.......2004-04-26
I got this cookbook shortly after it came out, as I was just becomming really interested in cooking. It has quickly become the bible of my kitchen. The recipes are easy to follow (and not to mention delicious!) with excellent pictures. It also offers detailed descriptions of various kinds of meats, grains, pastas, fruits, vegetables, etc. It has a very extensive variety of dishes to choose from... They say you can't please everyone, all the time, but this book will sure come close! I would highly recommend this book to any cook from beginner to advanced gourmet.
if you're going to own one cookbook - this is it.......2003-10-21
my mother-in-law bought me this cookbook and i've been using it every week since then. out of all the cooking books i own, this is the one i come back to time and time again. this book is a great resource for anything you would ever want to cook. the recipes are fantastic, most importantly - delicious - and are all very easy. there's a photo for almost each recipe, so if you're like me and you like to see a photo to picture the dish, this is the book for you. i highly recommend this book as the first and only cookbook you may ever need.
LOVED THIS BOOK.......2003-08-01
Was impressed by the quality of recipes in this book. This is a nice gift for someone just starting out, as well as seasoned cooks. Can't have too many books for sure.
Good things haven't changed over the years.......2003-07-06
While I was growing up, I loved helping my mom cook. I used to read through her cookbooks, looking at pictures and dreaming of one day being able to cook things like those pictures. My favorite cookbook was her Good Housekeeping cookbook. Now, 23 years later, I'm out on my own. I was at my mom-in-law's house, and I noticed she had a copy of this new GH cookbook. She bought an extra copy for me.
I absolutely love my All New Good Housekeeping Cook Book. The recipes are very diverse. I love the hints from the professionals, scattered throughout the book. Most of all, I love that GH kept the pictures in and kept fairly simple recipes in. If you know the Good Housekeeping name, you'd definitely know that this a top-notch cookbook!
Bought by mistake.......2003-01-03
As part of a bookclub, I forgot to inform them that I did not want this selection, so they sent it. That was three years ago and I never really looked at the book until this past thanksgiving. Since them I've used it frequently and it's amazing!! I first tried the after thanksgiving turkey soup, it was great, I then tried scalloped potatoes (which I'd usually failed at before), and they were good, then I tried the simple pasta with peas, and again very good. As I've looked through the other recipes, there are so many I've marked to be tested. I'm glad I got this book by mistake....and hate that it took so long for me to give it a try.
I highly recommend this book!!

Cook Book Basics.......2007-01-15
If you want an everyday cookbook with all the basics of cooking, great recipies and cooking methods as wll, then the Good Housekeeping Cookbook is for you!
Good basic cook book and a great book for pressing flowers.........2006-07-02
My mother lives with me cooking great southern food ...all the time. She asked for this book, so I got it for her a year ago for Mom's Day. She wasn't happy because it wasn't like her way older version. I was happy with the book because I decided to try some cooking. So I made Mexican rice, a tortilla casserole, several cakes, Coc au Vin, shrimp in lime and tried half the salads and several of the breads. By that time nothing had failed and everything was credible so I decided I really liked the book. It's what I use to cook mostly. I'm not like my mother who owns at least 200 cookbooks and then cooks without a recipe. I need straightforward instruction. The book is very large and heavy so it does take some lugging but that's okay too. I found I could press pansies and violets in the pages between tissue sheets for "other reasons". So I recommend it for a wedding present, to a child starting their own home, for a gift for a housewarming...it can go well with a pie plate as a gift to that special couple starting to live together. I plan on using a recipe today for Salmon, and I'm sure it'll be great. It is a bit too "fancy" for mom so it would seem that the book has changed from the menu and repetoire of the 1950's which might explain both of our reactions. I'm going to seek out what she wants used.
Good book for the basics.......2005-12-09
This book is a good starting point for basic recipes. There are good instructions on basic things, but I tend to adjust many of the recipes I use to suit my own taste and cooking style. A couple of the recipes were really good. This is one of those cookbooks you go to when you want the ordinary. That being said, my husband often wants "the ordinary" so I do use it a lot for inspiration.
Acceptable general cookbook, but there are better options.......2005-08-05
Ordinarily, I wouldn't have bought this book. However, I received The Good Housekeeping Cookbook as a premium for joining a club, so I've examined it with an eye to where it'll fit into my collection.
Everybody needs one or two general cookbooks. Even if you're a devoted foodie and you love to cook, at some point you have a hankering for a basic middle-America comfort food dish, maybe an old favorite from your childhood. I discovered this years ago, when I realized that, despite an impressive collection, I didn't have a single recipe for tuna fish casserole.
At first glance, the Good Housekeeping Cookbook looks like a candidate for the job. It has 1,500 recipes, frequent photographs of the finishd dish, and 24 chapters that range from meat to quick breads to canning and freezing. In an effort to "update" the 1950s-style recipes to modern tastes, you'll find recipes for jerk chicken, Thai beef with basil, and tofu egg salad. If you're the sort of person who only wants to own one cookbook, the sheer number of options will keep you quite happy. Even though it doesn't have a tuna noodle casserole after all.
Unfortunately, those recipes are largely disappointing.
Oh, they'll work. You'll definitely be able to make something edible for dinner, using this book. It just won't be awesome. It won't be authentic, either, but I don't think the typical buyer for this book is looking for that. As long as it tastes good, that's fine.
There are two major problems with this cookbook. One is a pretence of healthy cooking, which basically means a fawning obsequience to the notion of fat-is-bad. For instance, a recipe for cooking a fresh ham has you take off all the skin; the result is sure to be a dried-out lump of meat. Margarine is substituted for butter in a trout meunierre recipe, when that's a dish wherein the butter taste really matters. (It also leaves out capers, but I could live with that.)
Yet, the instructions for baking the traditional turkey blithely tell you to stuff the bird (with, I should mention, some pretty good-sounding stuffings); in recent years, the accepted practice has become to cook the dressing separately, for both health and cooking reasons. (By the time the stuffing is cooked, the turkey is dry.) Also, the turkey photo shows a light-brown bird; it isn't cooked yet!
A greater sin is the book's wimpiness when it comes to spicing. I'm not speaking only of a fear of heat, such as the jerk chicken recipe that uses a single jalapeno for a 4-serving meal, or a Cajun Meat Loaf that uses 1/2 tsp cayenne for 2 pounds of meat. The recipes use entirely too light a hand on ANY flavoring, such as the aforementioned caperless fish. "Classic Swiss Fondue" uses 1 tablespoon of kirsch; most recipes use about 1/4 cup. Roast chicken with 40 cloves of garlic uses only 6 thyme sprigs; most such recipes braise the chicken, and they use a lot more thyme (and celery, which this recipe leaves out). At best, you'll have one-note, bland dinners.
Perhaps the book is meant for beginners, I thought. But I don't think it succeeds very well for that purpose, either. There are few "serve this with..." suggestions for meal planning, which was certainly my big challenge when I first started. Because most beginners are also young (and thus broke), a good beginner's book has lots of options for the budget-conscious; the Good Housekeeping Cookbook is somewhat weak in that regard. And you learn almost nothing about the cooking process, so this book won't help you improve your skills.
You might like to cook that way, however. If, like some of my relatives, you're unadventurous when it comes to food, but you simply want ideas for dinner, this book will be adequate. But if you're looking for one basic cookbook, there are better options. One of them is Mark Bittman's How To Cook Everything, which also has a gadzillion recipes; it, however, also has excellent recipes and instruction on how to accomplish new tasks (such as, if I recall correctly, how to butcher a lobster). I also own the Better Homes and Gardens cookbook (the one with the red-and-white checked cover), which is where I turn for those "basic" recipes, such as casseroles and biscuits; I'd certainly choose that book over this one.
This book is okay. But you can do better.
Great recipes- BUT exact copy of 2001 All New Cook Book!.......2004-06-06
If you already have the 2001 All New Good Housekeeping Cook Book, save your money - this is a reprinting with a different cover and slightly heavier paper. Page for page, exactly the same.
The 2001 book was excellent, though, and if you don't already own it this would make a great addition to your cookbook library.

My First Great Cookbook.......2007-08-21
We all have memories of cooking with Mom and her extremely well used cookbook. The one with the dog-eared pages and stains, their ultimate guide to new recipes and old techniques. When I turned 21, I decided it was time that I set out on the hunt to find my own staple cookbook and after looking at everything else out there, I picked this one.
From cover to cover, this book covers all of the information I needed to know but never knew. It has tons of great recipes ranging from the classics (like step by step instructions on how to cook my first Thanksgiving turkey)to new favorites like Pad Thai. The pictures are informative and inspiring. But there are also guides to nutrition, menus for different events and holidays, how to set a table and entertain. There are even explanations as to the different types of cheese or cuts of meat and where they come from.
This is not the type of book that just teaches you how to MAKE recipe. It is a book that teaches you how to know what to buy, when its in season, what it goes with and essentially how to CREATE a great variety of meals. Mom, I think I've found my cookbook. :)
Favorite Cookbook!.......2006-07-06
My husband & I received this cookbook as a wedding present and we have yet to find a bad recipe and we've done a lot of them! Our friends now thing we are GREAT cooks and we enjoy sharing these great recipes with them. We've even given this cookbook as gifts multiple times. It is virtually the only cookbook we use! I love the tips and instructions in the front of each section too--really easy to follow and understand.
Better suited for new cooks.......2005-10-05
I was so excited to buy this book after reading the reviews. However I must admit I'm a little disappointed as it didn't meet my expectation. if you subscribe to family circle magazine you will find this book a bit dull as most of the recipes are too plain (some recipes I saw on the magazine itself but I think FC and GH are sister magazines therefore similar stuff is expected) and also the magazine has better step by step instructions than this book. But none the less this is a great first cookbook for a new cook. It has nutrition info as well as many great tips even entertaining ideas. I must also give credit to the book for teaching me one or two new tricks.
Now my friends think that I am a gourmet chef..........2004-05-03
This was the first cookbook I bought when I decided that I should start learning how to make food that I actually want to eat. There are lots and lots of pictures, showing the process of making a particular dish. This was great, as I didn't even know at that point what equipment I was supposed to make the food with. Anyway, I did a couple of recipes and then moved on to trying recipes from all kinds of books. Last week however, I did two recipes for my guests on my birthday, and they loved it. I did the Salmon with dill and caper sauce and also the Caramel Apple Tart. Other good dishes: Asparagus Gratin, Veal Stuffed with Fontina, Prosciutto, and Basil. I was not to excited about the Green Bean dish with vinaigrette (but then I am not crazy about green beans - but the picture looks good!) If you want to learn from scratch and know how to substitute ingredients and all that, then this book is maybe not the one. But I worked for me, because I wanted to see if I even liked a method of cooking before learning more about it (my mom used to sauté everything, broiling and all that were a new concepts to me).
The Best Cookbook Available!.......2003-12-24
This is a wonderful book, and an excellent kitchen resource regardless of your experience level in the kitchen. The book contains a dizzying array of recipes in every conceivable category, and is well organized and illustrated. The illustrations, in fact, are what truly set this book apart: not only are the dishes well presented, explained, and photographed, but the steps involved in preparing the dishes are generally photographed to make it crystal clear how to do all required tasks.
Earlier in my life, I was a Chef at a high dollar restaurant serving mostly beef, so I was largely acquainted with the techniques associated with preparing most meats (and agree with the techniques used here), but I have never been especially knowledgeable about baking (and some other things). This book made it easy to learn the exact steps involved along the way to making every dish contained herein. I was especially enthused with the photographs taken at major preparation steps and decision points. This let me get it right the first time without having a recipe that was almost, but not quite, perfect.
Any level of cook from very beginner to advanced will love this book. There are dishes ranging from simple to complex (biased toward the simple on average) but all the ones I have made have worked well and tasted great. No kitchen should be without this book!
