Dramatic Beach Read.......2007-06-18
Summer Boys by Hailey Abbott is about three girls and one dramatic summer that will change their lives forever. Jamie, Ella, and Beth Tuttle are cousins who have spent every summer at Pebble Beach since they were children. Jamie found a boyfriend, last summer, but now she feels like he is holding something back. Ella has found a boyfriend for the summer, which would be great if he wan't involved with her sister. Beth has always loved George as a friend, but now she starts to realize how cute he looks.
Summer Boys is a realistic teen dramam that sucks you in from the very first page. The alternating third-person chapters let you see every event in gripping detail. Hailey Abbott does an amazing job showing each girl's story on the same summer timeline, and making events intertwine within each other's stories stories. This book is great for anyone looking for an engaging beach read, while waiting for their summer romance to begin.
Summer Boys.......2007-05-16
For Jamie, Ella, and Beth Tuttle, this summer it's all about boys. In Summer Boys by Hailey Abbott drama in Pebble Beach, CN will reach its max. The Tuttle Cousins always have fun together, and spend every summer in Pebble Beach. The theme is about having fun and the start of a brand new summer. Jamie had an amazing summer with Ethan last year and wants it to happen again. Ella just wants a boyfriend, but the guy she's after likes her sister, Kelsi. My favorite character, Beth, is going to the beach with her best friend George and is having a blast until he meets another girl. Will Beth discover she might be jealous of George, her best friend? This book is filled with drama, romance, and even gives you the feel of being at the beach. This book is for anyone who loves summer, the beach, and of course boys. There are 3 sequels to this book, Next Summer, After Summer, and Last Summer, all by Hailey Abbott. If you like the first book, you'll love the next 3. I mean, who wouldn't have a blast at a beach all summer with bonfires, beach parties, and boys - everywhere.
Awesome Book.......2007-05-14
I bought this book at first beacause I wanted to buy books that had to deal with summer since summer will soon be here. I started reading it and I got hooked to it right away. The book is about three girls and their love lives during summer vacation. It was such a good book and I loved the way she described situations. It was really cute and by far one of the best books I have read.
FAB-U-LOUS!!!!.......2007-04-06
This is a GREAT book! It's about 3 cousins that all have love problems. Beth starts to find out that she likes her best friend George more then a friend. Jamie is head over heals for her boyfriend Ethan who she meet last summer but he seems to be pushing her away. Ella meets a boy named Peter who likes her sister Kelsi more then Ella who is feeling unsure of herself now. Each story for every girl ends in a well writen. Haily Abbourt starts out a series in an excellent way leaving you wanting more of the Tuttle girls.

Customer Reviews:
good series..........2007-03-06
This was a good series from Janette Oke. It isn't one of her best, but I still really enjoyed reading it. I would recommend it to anyone who is already a Janette Oke fan. For new readers I would suggest starting with her other series such as Love Comes Softly or the Canadian West series.
One of my favorites growing up........2005-12-01
Originally my mom introduced me to this series because she thought I would enjoy it because it was from a guys perspective. Well she was right. I cant even count how many times I read through each of the books. I could always imagine being right there with him as he told his story. Eventually I was given this book collecting all four novels and again read through it over and over again. This being the only Janette Oke series I have read I cant really base it off of the other ones. But for me it was a great way to spend a rainy day or just any other time I felt like picking up a book.
All right overall.......2002-05-14
Personally, I don't care for the way Janette Oke used the first-person style of writing, with a man as her main character. Her man just doesn't seem like a real man, mainly because he acts and thinks along the same lines as Janette's women do in her other books. Overall, it was a mistake for her to use a guy to tell the story- I think the books would have been vastly better if Janette had used a girl's perspective.
Aside from that complaint-
This story begins with the childhood of the "narrator", and goes through the boy's growing-up years on the farm. Everything is peaceful and happy. Little incidents occur here and there- his grandfather comes to live with them, he gets his first dog, etc. Finally, he becomes a man. One night he overhears the men downstairs discussing the fact that he needs to get married. He decides that yes, he should get married, so bang! he goes out and does it. Then the books tell about his married life (I liked his wife, by the way.) During his married life they go through the Depression and he winds up on a road crew far from home. All of a sudden, at the very end, everything is resolved and he gets to go home.
Generally this story is pretty good, but I've read many books by Janette Oke that are much better. Like I said, I think what messed up this series was trying to use the guy's perspective. It just isn't quite right.
Seasons Series.......2001-08-04
I am an avid fan of Janette Oke, and have read every thing she has published. This is indeed a wonderful series, with descriptive scenes and true romance. If you haven't tried this one--give it a chance-it is a beautiful story.
A book full of help.......2001-07-27
Ilove all of mrs okes books she has given me a new perception of life through her books and i would like to thank her for having such an amazing gift and sharing it with the world

Something about this book..............2007-01-04
I agree with the reviewer below me. She mentioned that it was different than the others and i totally agree.
I let my friend borrow it before i read it and before she gave it to me she said that it just wasnt the same and there was not much action going on as much as the summer ones.
This book was also too short, it seemed as though she was rushing into it
let's hope she can gain back her composure for her next book: last summer
After Summer.......2006-12-21
I've loved the Summer Boys novels since I started reading them, but this one was a little more dissappointing to me compared to the others. Don't get me wrong, I loved it; yet, something about After Summer is different from the others. It could possibly be that the book doesn't take place at Pebble Beach, but I think it was mostly how some, espcially one in particular, of the relationships between the girls and their significant others panned out. I hope all is resolved in her next and final book, and that it feels less like I'm on roller coaster of ups and downs in the Tuttle girls' lives. I do agree with others who have said this book is too short. Hell, I like to take my time while reading a book and I finished this one in about 8 hours.
It's definatley worth reading, but, as I stated before, I hope everything is smoothed over in the next installment of the series. Honestly, who doesn't enjoy a happy ending?
it was good but.........2006-10-21
IT WAS TOO SHORT!! it should have continued longer..it stops after thanksgiving, is there going to be a book called BEFORE THE LAST SUMMER? but besides the lack of pages it was a decent book.
Abbott has done it again.......2006-10-09
After Summer was a great book, and again kept me reading finished it pretty quick well it is the shortest i think. but it was very good glad to see jeremy back with ella, and i was hoping to hear more about jamie but me favorite to hear about is ella and beth. kelsi's story was good in this i hope to see her with taryn's brother bennett. i am looking forward to reading the next summer boys novel Last Summer, i really hope it's not the last one. it'd b awesome if these books were a movie!
After Summer.......2006-10-04
I thought the novel After Summer was a great book. I rate this book 5 stars because it kept me reading each night and i thought the book was a great girl book. The book had a lot of excitement in it and kept me reading each night. The characters in this novel were very good and i could relate to them.

Book Description
When her small hometown in Arkansas becomes the site of a camp housing German prisoners during World War II, 12-year-old Patty Bergen learns what it means to open her heart. Although she's Jewish, she begins to see a prison escapee, Anton, not as a Nazi--but as a lonely, frightened young man with feelings not unlike her own, who understands and appreciates her in a way her parents never will. And Patty is willing to risk losing family, friends--even her freedom--for what has quickly become the most important part of her life. Thoughtful, moving, and hard-hitting, Summer of My German Soldier has become a modern classic.

Still love it at 26 years old..........2007-08-16
This is a great book. Any young girl with a romance streak will be drawn in by the forbidden love element. But this isn't just a dumb romance novel. Patty has to choose between her family and community and Anton. Great coming of age story. Still one of my favorites!
Great teaching tool.......2007-06-11
I first read this book in high school and wanted to reread it through the eyes of a grown up who studied World War II. It correctly describes the American south during the war and America's overall sentiment against the Nazi war machine. Although some of the material is somewhat boring and may be considered unnecessary, the overall theme is well addressed. Due to its age, the story may be antiquated for today's youth, but it is still a useful tool for English and History teachers to use for illustration.
great book.......2007-06-08
It ws sweet, touching and a true love story with out being filled with pointless lust
The Summer Patty Bergen Would Remember that One Special German Soldier.......2007-03-16
The most exiting event in the history of Jenkinsville occurred that summer day when a Prisoner of War camp was set up just outside the city. The Nazi's that had been depicted as evil people that would kill someone as soon as they looked at them turned out to be young, kind-faced men with blond hair. Patty Bergen was Jewish and her father owned a department sore on the main street of the town. One day she was in the store when the prisoners with money in hand came to buy hats for work in the field. Patty went to help one of the prisoners whose name was Frederick Anton Reiker and discovered that instead of wanting to buy a hat with his money he wanted to buy a pen with fake diamonds on it. Not long after their first meeting, Anton escaped from the prison camp and fled but before he caught the back of a departing train, Patty saw him and invited him to stay in the room over the garage until the war was over. But, one day Anton saw Patty being beaten and he ran out to stop the attack, but Ruth, the housekeeper saw him rush out from the garage. Even though Ruth would not tell a soul about it Anton decided it was too much of a risk on Patty's part and he left that same night. After Anton had been gone for months a man named Mr. Pierce asked Patty a fair amount of questions and after hearing that Anton had died she let everything out. After that she had to go and live with her grandmother for a while until the time of the trial. The judge sentenced her to no less than four months in a reformatory for girls and there she stayed for the time. I enjoyed this book because of how the story of how it was depicted.
I thought this novel was quite engaging because of how Patty changed over time. At the beginning of the story Patty is reckless and had low self-esteem. Her sister was always getting compliments on how pretty she looked, and Patty was always being told that she should try to look and act more like her sister. After Patty started hiding Anton she took baths and started to care more about how she looked. Also Patty started getting beaten by her father often and she sometimes thought that she was always wrong. Then after Anton died and she was sent off to the reformatory school she developed a new perspective on life and people. After Ruth went to see her she discovered that she was not wrong, but did things for the right reason in a way that other people could not see.
The way that Anton acted throughout the entire story was completely unexpected for what most people associated with Nazis. Anton, unlike most of his colleagues spoke virtually flawless English and was a very polite young man. Even after he found out that Patty was a Jew he continued to treat her with respect and he cared for her deeply. Also, Anton did not join the Nazis because he wanted to he joined it to escape punishment and imprisonment by his own country.
I also enjoyed this book because it showed the level of tolerance between the Caucasian Americans and the people that surrounded them. Ruth was the African American housekeeper for the Bergens and if any food was missing Patty's mother always assumed that it was Ruth without using any logical reasoning to see if one of her own children had eaten the food. Even though the German prisoners were not mean or unruly they were usually treated fairly but once they were out of earshot news about them spread quickly. One of the things that the townspeople said about the prisoners was that they were being treated too kindly and that they should have cruel punishments.
Through reading this book I gained an appreciation for Patty because of how she gained confidence though the story. The imagery of this wonderful novel created an amazing story with brilliant characters. This book was also wonderful because of how Anton was shown in the story. The novel was especially good because of how racial and cultural differences play into each other.

A Boring Depressing Book.......2007-02-23
Summer of My German Soldier, Betty Greene, 0-439-18932-2
A Boring Depressing Book
Do you ever think that a Jewish girl would help a Nazis during World War Two? I wouldn't even consider it until I read this realistic fiction book. Patty, a Jewish girl, lived in Arkansas. The government decided to out a prison camp there for the Nazis. Patty was working at her dad's store when she met one of the prisoners. One day she was outside and there he was, it was Anton! She hid him in her attic. Then he left. Patty's dad came running inside, two detectives were with him, was Anton o.k.?
I thought that this book was a little blah. Although this book sounds exciting it was very slow. I would not recommend this book to anyone who likes exciting books because, most of the book was about Patty's depressing life and how her parents hated her. However I think that an older audience might like this book because, they may be able to relate to the hard times Patty had. Also they may remember how people judged other people by the color of their skin. This book had some very diverse issues. The title of this book makes it sound like a real page turner but, it wasn't. The book took a very long time to set the mood at the beginning of the book. Although some parts were exciting, others weren't . For each exciting page there were twenty dull ones. The story was very hard to concentrate on. During most of the book nothing happened so that gave my mind a lot of time to wander so, once something exciting happened I was lost. One of the surprises in the story were that the reporter that Patty met was still friends with her after she found out what Patty had done. The reporter sent Patty her own subscription to the news paper when she was at the reformatory.

AMAZING.......2007-06-09
one of the best novels/sequels i've ever read, hands down. i totally reccomend it!!
great!.......2006-06-29
Next summer is better than summer boys. The tuttle girls (kelsi, ella, beth minus jamie) go back to the beach. Beth is totally in love with george but sad that he can't go with her this time so she can't help but like the attention of the hot lifegaurd. Kelsi, after what happened last time, wants a boy-free summer but keeps seeing the frat boy Tim, who she thinks is not her type but who knows? :) Ella, is tired of all the hookups and just wants a perfect guy. She finds one, but for once, she can't attract him!
I loved the ending. It's wonderful. Such a happy ending. Can't wait to read 'Oh Baby'!
Summer teen read.......2006-06-18
This is the second of the Summer boys series and it's good. These books remind me of some cheap, lame, predictable yet you-can't-help-but-watch t.v. drama on ABC Family. I'm 17 yrs old and an avid reader so these books seem kind of pointless but I CAN'T PUT T DOWN! I can't wait to see what happens next to these 4 Tuttle girls.
On a more critical note, if your looking for a mind blowing novel this isn't it. This is a good one day reader for the beach. Honestly, it's like a t.v. drama. It's so addicting!
better..........2006-06-16
Although better than the first one, Next Summer is still somewhat flawed. The Tuttle family, back in Pebble Beach a year later minus Jamie, settles in for another summer of deception. Beth is upset when George has to stay home and work for the summer, yet she recovers quickly when she meets Adam, the easy-on-the-eyes lifeguard. Elle is still filled with guilt about helping Peter to cheat on Kelsey last summer, so she decides to go after a 'good boy', but he seems uninterested. Kelsey, who saw Peter with some girl, is determined to find out who that girl was, not knowing that it was Elle. However, Kelsey is sidetracked by adorable Tim. Next Summer definitely picks up the pace.
I couldn't put this book down!.......2006-06-02
My friends got me hooked on the Summer Boys series, and I ended up reading both books in a day! I loved being able to see each character's story from their pont of view, as well as from the other characters'. At times I was absolutely furious at some of the girls, but the majority of the time I was just absorbed in the book, cheering Beth, Kelsi, and Ella on! Well, not really Ella, because she's too risque. But I was cheering for Beth and Kelsi. =]]]

You are in L-O-V-E. Notice how I have no hesitation spelling it. At all. Reason? That was just the wildest entry you've posted! Ever....You are so seeing the world through the eyes of L-O-V-E.
A ten-year best friendship is put to the test when Chuck and Hal spend their first summer apart falling for two questionable mates: a sexy Saudi songstress and a smokin' hot French punk. As Chuck heads off to summer theater camp and Hal stays in their hometown, learning how to drive, they keep in touch via blogging, reporting to each other about their suddenly separate lives and often ridiculous romantic entanglements. As both their relationships take some unexpected turns, Hal and Chuck struggle to come to terms with their growing differences while trying to keep their friendship alive.

Raw, Honest and Refreshing.......2007-09-11
When I first came across this book, I was skeptical. Mainly due to the format. How interesting can two teenagers blog entries really be? Okay, sure it can be interesting, but for how long? Will it seem forced? Still, it intrigued me to see just how it was done.
Needless to say, after only reading the first few pages, my initial thoughts seemed to go away. The blog entries worked. However, it's not until you really delve into this story that you realize, that the blog entry is merely a device (and I mean that in a good way). The gem here is the story, and the two lead characters. Allowing the story to unfold through their blog entries, allows these characters and their lives to become real and easy to relate to. You feel as if you are reading a real person's thoughts, emotions, and opinions. Adding to the realism are the countless pop culture references from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Halo, Scream, and Spider-Man. It reminds you that this is taking place in our world. All of this works.
I hate reviews that recap a story that is already recapped on the page itself (or in someone else's reviews), so I won't do that. Suffice it to say, it's raw emotion. The characters allow themselves to express themselves in a way that really draws you to both of them. There are moments where you'll laugh. There are moments where you'll be thinking "I've done that", or "I've been there". Then there are moments where you can feel your heart drop for Hal and Chuck.
Sadly, the majority of the people who will buy or read this book will be those from the gay community. I say sadly, because this is the kind of book that should not be limited to just the gay community. It should be enjoyed by all people, regardless of their sexual orientation. It's a tale of love, loyalty, and growing up. But above all else, it's a story about friendship. Something anyone and everyone can relate to.

I've just finished reading "Tale of Two Summers" and I miss Hal and Chuck. When I miss the characters, I know I've read a great book. I read a great many books, but I keep only those that I consider superior. I have less than twenty such books on my shelf, but "Tale of Two Summers" is joining them.
A Very Honest and Unique Tale.......2007-04-01
I am a literature student in the University of California and one of the things that I look forward to most about my vacations is being able to read 'fun' books that no self-respecting professor would have on a sylabus. For my spring break, one of the novels that I blind w/o any knowledge (besides amazon's descriptions) was 'A Tale Of Two Summers' which has honestly become one of my favorite books - over the course of three days I read the book twice.
The book follows the summer adventures of two best friends (one striaght, one gay) as they spend their first summer apart in almost 10 years. Both of the boys are 15 years-old, and they are going through the struggles of lust, love, and lonelyness, while trying to find their niche in the world. While the book had many personal touches that I could relate to (I am gay and met my own 'Henri' several months ago), beyond that, the story not only have a very frank portrayal of a budding gay relationship. But, it also touches on the realism of gay life, sex, and relationships.
But beyond that it shows a beautiful story of two friends bonding, despite the distance placed between them for the summer as they fall in and out of love.
very enjoyable.......2007-04-01
a fascinating and inventive format for a book; organized in blog posts. it works out far better than one would think. a good/relevant/appropriate/fun/humorous read.
The ups and downs of friendship.......2007-02-27
I wish that a novel like this had been around when I was in high school. Author/director/screenwriter Brian Sloan (WTC View, I Think I Do) writes a satisfyingly dense story of a summer in the lives of two bets friends: gay (and newly out) Hal, and Chuck, the straight "wonderboy."
I'm not usually one for books written entirely in emails, letters, diary entries etc. but it works in this book; the heroes are corresponding via a blog, they get more detailed when explaining what's going on in their lives.
The novel is also notable because it explores the friendship between a gay teen and his straight friend. This is such a rare phenomena to depict, it makes the book feel ex. I did relate in many ways as this book reinded me so much of a one of my most important friendships, right down to Hal's neediness. Sloan really gets it. I think Hal may have been just slightly better developed a character than Chuck, but that may just be because part of me was more interested in his tale.
This an excellent, frank and very readable novel. I read it in two days because I kept wanting to see what happened next. The best thing is that nothing works out the way I thought it would. Despite this being targeted for the Young Adult age bracket, I'd recommend this for us "grown-ups" as well. When a book's this good, everybody should take a chance and read it.

Armageddon Summer provides a front-row seat for the type of event most of us only witness on a TV screen. Reverend Raymond Beelson is gathering 144 "Believers" atop Mount Weeupcut in Massachusetts to camp out, pray, and await Armageddon--July 27, 2000--when he predicts that his faithful flock will be saved as the rest of the world is set ablaze in fire and brimstone. We experience the month leading up to this climax through the eyes of two teenagers who have never met before, Jed and Marina, each of whom have come to the compound out of a sense of responsibility toward their families. Young Jed is only on the mountain to watch over his father who "went a little crazy" after his wife left the family: "When my father told me that the world was going to end I figured he was making some sort of weird joke." Jed's sarcasm, humor, and flippancy toward the Believers does not erase the love he feels for his newly devout father, nor his capacity for empathy toward members of the congregation. Marina is a Believer, or so she tries to be, in the hope that somehow her faith will restore harmony to her family. She has traveled to the mountain with her younger brothers at her mother's fervent insistence, but her fear that her father will remain below with the rest of the nonbelievers to burn alive unnerves her.
Coauthors Jane Yolen and Bruce Coville artfully sculpt the alternating voices and perspectives of Marina and Jed, and readers will be swept up in the thoughts and emotions of these complex young people. The skillful writing raises this novel above others--these characters are immensely believable as they struggle with matters of family and faith, while maintaining a smart, convincingly adolescent outlook. Excerpts from sermons, FBI files, camp schedules, and e-mails keep the story lively and suspenseful, as the Believers begin to stockpile weapons and the media adds fuel to the flames. But perhaps more resonant than the apocalyptic ending are the careful, distinct portraits of the two teens, thrust into a frightening situation that shuttles them suddenly into adulthood. (Ages 12 to 16) --Brangien Davis
Book Description
The world will end on Thursday, July 27, 2000. At least, that’s what Reverend Beelson has told his congregation. That’s why Marina and Jed and their parents have joined the rest of the Reverend’s flock at a mountain retreat to await the end of the world. But this world has only just begun for Jed and Marina, two teenagers with more attitude than faith. Why should the world end now, when they’ve just fallen in love for the first time?

Excellent Young Adult Book.......2007-04-11
ARMAGEDDON SUMMER is an excellent book for young adults that can be enjoyed by more sophisticated adult readers as well. It reminded me a great deal of Paul Zindel's classic THE PIGMAN both in how the story alternates between a boy and a girl narrating the story and in how the teenagers are often the more sane members of their families. Aside from the voices of the teens radio talk show transcripts, sermon excerpts, and E mails are utilized to tell the story. Yolen and Coville do a great job of handling the characters in the book who hold very unusual religious beliefs respectfully and humanely. And yes the ending did take me by surprise.
Armageddon Summer- a must read........2007-04-10
Do you have that certain book you always check out from the library and re-read, just because it feels like an old friend, and you can't get enough of it?
That's Armageddon Summer for me.
This book follows the lives of two very different kids. Marina Marlow is a homeschooled girl who loves Emily Dickenson poems. Recently, her mom has decided to follow the beliefs of Reverend Beelson- and he says that the world will end on July twenty-seventh- and it will do so in fire. How convenient- right when Marina turns fourteen! Her mother drags Marina and her five brothers up to the mountain- the only place where God will spare people- and leave her dad to be "Fried". Marina is torn, and doesn't know what to believe.
Sixteen year old Jed is dragged up on the mountain too, but not by his mother. His mom ran off with a photographer to live in the mountains in Colorado, and he's stuck with his weepy dad, who turned to religion to cope with the devastating break up. He doesn't believe any of this crap, and has smuggled in a computer- which is against the rules.
This book details the experiences in each of their perspectives, and eventually they both notice each other. As the book progresses, they begin to know each other better.
Armageddon Summer is five stars for me- you should read it too!
Fantastico!.......2006-08-17
This book was an amazing read, I've been re-reading it for years. It has a compelling plot and the characters are realistic. This novel excels in the area of teen narrators and makes the story all the more believable. In the end, you really have to decide, who are the bad guys? It explores the world of grey in cults and their beliefs.
If you liked this, try John Marsden's Tomorrow, when the War Began.
A Unique Book.......2006-06-17
Novels written in the first person aren't very common; good novels written in the first person are even less so. This YA book is narrated by its main characters, Marina and Jed, who meet each other at a mountaintop encampment to await the end of the world. This style allows the authors to develop them into deep, likeable characters (and it takes a while to do so).
Realistic settings are vividly described and neatly merged with actual places. After Marina and Jed tell this story, you might be tempted to search for the (fictional) events in old newspapers!
Yes, this is a love story, but it's not junior chick-lit. It's an adventure, too. After about the middle of the book, the plot tightens. Although the climax occurs shy of the end, what comes after salvages hope from the ashes of the "armageddon."
The coauthors have done a fine job presenting the religious aspects of this story in a very non-judgmental and inoffensive way. It does not appear they are pushing a particular view--something to consider when choosing a young adult novel.
Most anyone with a young heart will enjoy ARMAGEDDON SUMMER.

AS Review.......2006-05-30
The title of this book pretty much describes the plot. Two teenagers, Jed and Marina, narrate the story of armageddon.
This book was at first very uninteresting, but the boredom was lifted later on. However, I couldn't relate or appeal to the two narrating characters, although they were well thought out to give variety of viewpoint to the conflict of the plot. Also, I didn't enjoy the pre-climactic reading. The book didn't hold my interest well.
I didn't enjoy this book too much. I would recommend Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins's Left Behind series over this, for better plot development, characters, and pretty much every other novel component.

Cho stikes again........2007-09-29
Another great collection of Liberty Meadows strips. Nobody draws women better. Oh yeah, there's jokes and critters too. Did I mention Frank Cho draws great female characters?
I love this series so far..........2007-03-09
I have all first 3 volumes and I find this TPB hilarious and entertaining.
Brandy, you're a fine girl.......2006-11-25
More fun in this volume, including the Evil Brandy vs. Not Evil Brandy storyline!
Mr Cho constantly shows his skill, with different drawing styles and even 'borrowing' characters from other comic strips.
Perhaps the only drawback with Frank Cho drawing beautiful women is that they all look beautiful. Apart from the mole and the hair Brandy and Jen look identical.
Cover gallery in the back and skecth pages (but not as many as volume 2). Also a three page story added at the back.
If you love Liberty Meadows this is for you, if you don't love Liberty Meadows... don't bother the rest of us while we're reading this.
Viva Liberty (Meadows).......2005-11-21
Crazy animals and geeky humans return in "Summer of Love," the third collection of Liberty Meadows comics. If the "evil Brandy" story isn't enough to snare people, then the slapstick humor, poignant romance and intense geekiness will definitely do.
This volume starts with Brandy's sultry roommate Jen installing a webcam, which captures all of Brandy's half-clothed, undignified moments. Khan the killer catfish returns to wreakhavoc on our friends, Dean coughs up his lungs, and Frank Cho (chimp alter ego) takes us on a guided tour of the animal sanctuary.
Probably the best storyline involves an "evil Brandy" from our dimension arriving in Liberty Meadows, immobilizing the good Brandy, and trying to kill Frank so that she can conquer the world (with her killer Pokemonkey). What stands between her and conquest? Frank, his tough alter ego, and a very P.O.ed Brandy...
But don't think that it gets too serious -- Cho does action and sci-fi exceptionally well in this story, mingled with some oddball humor. But then it's back to weirdness: going to the gym ("Someone get the jaws of life!"), Brandy's nasty mum, going fossil-hunting, to a summer barbecue with a skimpy dress code, and to a mega-geek convention where Brandy is repeatedly mistaken for Lucy Lawless and Lynda Carter.
Geeks, this is your kind of strip. In what other strip will you see the gang going to a con, with a main character dressed as Darth Maul? Or see references to David Lynch's "Dune" flick? No other strip! While civic pride adds to my liking for Cho, the real winning point is the insane sense of humour, and the appeal to our geeky sides.
The kooky animals take center stage, especially with the physical humor, from exploding gas pipes to sports injuries. Exhibit A: Dean coughing up his lungs, and Ralph uses a bellows to keep him alive. On the other hand, Cho provides some sweet romantic scenes, where poor Frank tries to summon up the courage to ask out Brandy.
As always, Cho keeps a mixture of realistic drawings (Brandy, Frank), and cartoonish artwork of all the animals. The one drawback (for women) is the focus on big-busted women; there's ONE male hottie in the whole book. But at least Cho can laugh at this focus, by having Jen toy with male minds, and having Dean hitting on girls and being hit by them in turn. Hope springs eternal for the piggie, I guess.
The animal shelter/looneybin antics continue in "Summer Love," a hilarious collection of Frank Cho's award-winning strip. And that baby picture on the back is pretty darn cute.
Wonderful book.......2005-08-26
Liberty Meadows is a hilarious and sadly underrated comic following the adventures of a group animals with issues and the long suffering humans who take care of them.
This collection has the classic 'Evil Brandy' storyline that has to be read to be believed.
My only issue with the collections is that they don't include the Sunday strips which were collected in the comics.
It's a great series read this book.

Between sipping homemade margaritas by the shore, and helping each other through their romantic woes, the Tuttle girls might just make this the craziest, sweetest, most unforgettable summer ever.

didn't like it.......2007-08-30
i was really disappointed with this book. being the end of the series, i expected so much more. i thought that beth and george would go to college together, and tim and kelsi. instead, kelsi got together with boring bennett. and after all that drama she had, about the virginity issue, she just gives it up to bennett in a blink of an eye.
the first two books of the series were addicting, the third one it started falling apart, the fourth one it was way past waste of time.

In the last book of the steamy SUMMER BOYS series, Beth, Ella, and Kelsi are back in Pebble Beach for a summer to remember.
Beth and George are becoming friends, even though they are exes. Some people are just meant to be friends, but is there more to it?
Kelsi and Bennett are truly in love except for the whole long-distance thing. Can Bennett have the internship that he wants -- and the girl? Or is it not possible to have both?
Ella finally gets to see her own long-distance boyfriend, Jeremy, all the time and not just on weekends. But Peter, her old hookup, is bothering her a little too much.
This is a fun summer beach read, but the ending is kind of sad. At the same time, though, it also has a good twist and is really unexpected. LAST SUMMER really is the last good romance of the summer.
