Sock Monkey is Gay........2005-05-30
As an adult, this would not be the book that I would grab off the shelf, but my kid demanded it. The illustrations are a lot of fun. One cute feature is that the narrative is told by the text, and the dialogue is written in bubbles coming out of the characters' mouths. Also, the vocabulary is simple for early readers to deal with on their own.
My 6 year old gives 2 thumbs up.......2005-03-14
We had previously purchased Sock Monkey goes to Hollywood, and then found that Ms. Bell had one other book. We hope she keeps writing more. We've recommended the series to everyone, and we recommend it you as well.
The book is intelligently written, appealing to children as well as adult readers, and beautifully illustrated in a slightly nostalgic feel. The disco outfits that Sock Monkey and his partner wear just add to this effect.
This book covers many topics that cause kids to commonly feel overwhelmed - nervousness of being introduced to new people, creatively solving one's problems, and overcoming performing in front of others to name a few. The humor in this book appeals to both my daughter and me, which sometimes is hard to find in kids books.
Just buy this book - it will bring a smile to your face!
Great kids book!.......2004-12-28
This book has a truly unique and happy feel to it. It is the tale of sock monkey, a famous actor, who finds a dancing partner. I got this gift for my little cousin and he loved it! Apparantly there are other books about our famous little actor and I will definitely purchase them in the future. I recommend this book!
Book Description
Yee-haw! Sock Monkey lassoes a part in a singing cowboy movie — if he can only get up the nerve to kiss the leading lady.
Sock Monkey, the famous toy actor, can hardly believe his ears. He's landed the starring role in a singing cowboy movie! Now he'll get to yodel, ride a horse, lasso a cow, and — yikes! — kiss the leading lady. Sock Monkey doesn't want to kiss anyone! But it's the role of a lifetime, so the woolen thespian corrals all his friends to help him prepare. Can he resist the urge to ride into the sunset when the big moment comes? In a brilliant performance of (inadvertent) bravery in the face of panic, Sock Monkey is back — to do his fans proud.
Customer Reviews:
Not Nearly as Good as The First Book.......2007-07-03
We now have all three books.
Cece Bell is going down hill. The first book was WONDERFUL!
We kinda liked the second.. but this book is hard for a young
child to follow.. and the theme of KISSING is not really age
appropriate for what you'd expect of a sock monkey. It's not
worth buying folks. Get it from the library, free. Buy the
first book, maybe the second, but don't waste your money on
this. What was she thinking when she wrote this?? I think she was just
banking on the success of the first one. (no pun intended)
Pictures aren't even as well done. oh well.. spend and learn.
Fun for adults to read.......2006-12-24
Cece Bell's wording and illustrations are so engaging, you will enjoy reading this book over and over. Even the background characters are funny. I thumb through them when I need a giggle. I bought one for a friend's child and one for me! It is the 3rd in the series so far. If you haven't already, just go ahead and purchase all three.
To see some of Cece Bell's art around her house, go to her web site. Sign up for the fan club while you are at it. I did!
Sweet Silliness.......2006-12-13
The loveable Sock Monkey character is back, and he must face a fear. He has just landed a super movie role and can't wait. This means he'll get to wear cowboy clothes, ride a horse, lasso a cow, and...KISS A GIRL?! The starring role is too good to pass up, but he can't imagine kissing a girl. Whatever will he do? His friends help where possible, but they can only do so much.
Cece Bell's lively story and illustrations are sweetly funny. The story has a good morale at the end when Sock Monkey must overcome his fear of kissing in order to spare another character's feelings. Readers will learn that when we have to do things we don't want to, things can turn out just fine.
Older preschoolers and younger elementary students will enjoy the sweet silliness of this book.

Oscar is a little sock monkey that belongs to a little forgetful girl named Susie. Susie's class is having a pet show. She brings her rabbit but forgets the key to the cage. Oscar sets out on a mission to deliver the key to the girl's school! Will he make it!
The story was very cute. It gave life to stuffed animals. A lot of kids think that their toys can do think like humans can.
Yes. It has a message that even little kids can do BIG things!
Book Description
Calling all sock monkey fans! One-of-a-kind talent Cece Bell creates a quirky story like no other - a sudsy yarn about soaps and dreams, stardom, and good friends.
A star is born!
The famous toy actor, Sock Monkey, has been nominated for an Oswald Award. But to attend the ceremony, he must do something terrifying - he must take a bath. Yikes! Just the thought of bathing makes Sock Monkey dizzy with fear. Stinky soap! Icy water! Scratchy towels! Luckily, his three best pals - Miss Bunn, Froggie, and Blue Pig - know just what to do to help Sock Monkey become fresh and clean . . . and maybe win his very own Oswald! Bearing all the hallmarks of a cult classic, this heartening tale will have sock monkey stalwarts everywhere heaving a sigh of approval - and perhaps furtively jotting down recommended washing instructions.

Never mind all the other sock monkey wanna be's, Cece Bell's Sock Monkey series is the best! Her stories are charming and funny, the illustrations are crisp and colorful. You notice something different every time you read it - and believe me, I've had to read these wonderful books over and over to my daughters. We love them!!

Sock Monkey Goes to Hollywood: A Star Is Bathed.......2004-12-30
This book is my favorite book. It is so great. I have a Sock Monkey at home. I have 2 books of Sock Monkey's adventures.
Destined To Become a Classic. . ........2004-08-18
With the exception of Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are," "Sock Monkey Goes To Hollywood" is the most entertaining children's book we've read to our son, and, trust me, we read many books to our one-year old. This book always cracks me up, and succeeds because it entertains on several levels. Adults will appreciate the satire, and your child will enjoy the illustrations.
I think that anyone who assigns less than five stars to this book needs more sock monkeys in his/her life. Even if you don't have a child, buy this book. You'll love it.
Hip, funky and not without an important lesson!.......2004-05-23
I saw this book at a friend's house and now I've gotta get it for myself. I'm a long-time fan of Sock Monkeys, and this Sock Monkey is as adorable as they come. Parents will like this book because of the very cool illustrations and the humor. Kids will probably identify with the bath-hating Sock Monkey. The thing that really struck me about the book was that, of course we are all expecting Sock Monkey to win the award for which he's been nominated, and he actually DOESN'T.....and life goes on! He's gracious about it, kids get to see that we can't always get first prize, and whaddaya know, he ends up getting a prize, too....a nice touch. Definitely a great kids' book...with an actual sock monkey, it would make the perfect gift set!

I love sock monkeys, so this title caught me attention.
It counts down by 2's... 10, 8, 6, etc. so my 4 year old
was totally confused. The pictures are cute. I wouldn't
buy this again. Probably will donate this copy to the library.

smooth easy read w/juvenile intrigue & Christian values.......2006-09-07
I ran across Elspeth Campbell Murphy's 30 book Three Cousins Detective Club series when I was looking for easy reader chapter books for my 7 1/2 yr old 2nd grade daughter. The Mystery of the Sock Monkeys (#21) paperback just happened to be where we started. The 62 pages are divided into 15 chapters, and the print is medium, not tiny. There are occasional black & white sketch illustrations. Piggybacking on the Young Cousins Mysteries series for ages 4-8, the Three Cousins Detective Club series is categorized as for ages 9-12, but is fine for a younger confident reader who just needs help on the occasional difficult word. The Christian author ties each volume to a Bible verse, & weaves Christian values into the stories. On a wkend vacation, I started reading it to my daughter. She was instantly captivated by the characters & story, & quickly began reading it on her own. 10 yr old cousins, Sarah-Jane, Timothy, & Titus are always alert to suspicious situations ,& thrive on following clues to conclusion. In #21, it occurs to them that the rough tough looking & acting motorcycle rider Spider Marley does not seem like the kind of guy who would be frequenting fabric & handicraft shops, or helping out his seamstress aunt. They unravel the real truth behind this interesting character. The stories are entertaining & wholesome & elementary school age appropriate. We will definitely read more, & see about donating some to school & local public libraries.

Book Description
The sock monkeys are all shook up, in this engaging sequel to last season's 10 Little Sock Monkeys. This time, the playful creatures invite young children to join them in the monkey-monkey!
You stick your right paw in, you stick your right paw out, you stick your right paw in, and you shake it all about... The sock monkeys are putting on a show, swinging and shaking and shouting. And their irresistible antics will have kids singing and dancing along. William Winburn's funny photographs are a great way for children to learn left and right, as well as the different body parts.
Book Description
The Sock Monkey and the other toys in the house marvel at the prismatic spectrum shining on the parlor floor. They notice that the dazzling colors are somehow emanating from the beautiful glass doorknob on the front door. Winter turns to spring and the apple tree at the front of the house sprouts its new leaves, casting a warm green shadow on the door. But something happens to the doorknob, it seems to be broken, the magical light show hascome to a disheartening end. As the leaves grow heavier, joy leaves the house, until Mr. Crow comes up with plan: to repair the doorknob using very scientifical techniques! Meanwhile outside, notions of celestial events, planetary rhythm, and farmers' almanacs are discussed by two new characters, a bug and a bird named Rickets and Scurvy.
Customer Reviews:
A very gentle, innocent side of Tony Millionaire.......2007-06-21
I've been a fan of Tony Millionaire's for over 10 years now. I've always enjoyed his bizarre, sick sense of humor and his preoccupation with gore, suicide, and alcoholism. Now that I have an 18-month-old child, I would never dream of showing him any of Tony's "Maakies" strips or adult work.
This book, though... this book is something wonderful and different. I hate the word "enchanting," since it's overused for all kinds of treacly, mass-marketed junk, but this book is, yes, enchanting. It pulls my son in like no book ever has. In fact, I think this is the first narrative (story-telling) book he's ever been interested in. I've read it to him at least 50 times, and still he keeps requesting it.
The story is so simple and sweet that even the youngest child can understand the rudiments of it. Synopsis: One day, the four characters (including Sock Monkey and The Crow, the innocent stuffed-doll versions of Uncle Gabby and Drinky Crow) see a rainbow projected on the floor from a glass doorknob. The next day, it's gone. They collect every glass object in the house and place them all near the doorknob to "boost its power," to no avail. Then one morning the sun shines through the doorknob again, and "GAD-ZOOKS!" The room is full of rainbows! My son is a little too young to understand the rather subtle cause of the rainbow's disappearance, which is implied but never stated, but I think older children will get it.
The best part of the book for adults is the amazing illustrations, full of sly wit. For anyone who's ever enjoyed the interior of a beautiful turn-of-the-century house, the details of molding, fixtures, and built-in cabinets are absolutely stunning, down to a 30's-style "push-button" light switch on the wall.
I can't believe no one has reviewed this book before me, but I recommend you get it and enjoy the sweet mysteries of childhood with your little one. Then come back and write your own review and spread the word.

Book Description
Tony Millionaire's Eisner-award winning, multi-Harvey-Award nominated Sock Monkey returns in his first-ever full-length book! A mix of comics and illustrated text, this book tells the tale of Uncle Gabbie the Sock Monkey's origins and how he came to live with the little girl, Ann Louise. Have you ever wondered why Sock Monkey seems so creepy and lovable at the same time? Well here's the answer! From the darkest jungles of Borneo into the tall mansions of Massachusetts comes the woolen monkey, bringing nightmares and cuddly dreams to everyone he encounters. There are stories to be told of musty smells from sea chests in the attic, creaking stairs, and something in the solarium where the orchids grow under their dewy glass jars! `I have finally written the children's book I always wanted to find behind the walls of my grandmother's back staircase,` says Millionaire, `Maybe it's a story I remembered, maybe I dreamed it, but whatever it was, it took place a long time ago.`

Imagination and classy humor........2003-07-25
Zounds! Tony Millionaire doing a Children's Book?! He's is one of my favorite cartoonist. I've been a fan of his not-for-kids comic The Maakies (and Sock Monkey) for a while, but I really didn't expect this out of him. Well, I say he pulled it off. Tony Millionaire suprises me once again. I would so do him.
I'm a MOM of a 5-year-old and I love to read it aloud.......2002-02-02
I bought this book to read to my son because I'd heard of Tony Millionaire- he's a cartoonist in our local alternative weekly and does two strips- Sock Monkey and Maakies. But this is him entering the children's book market for the first time and it's very cool.
It has the feel of a Stuart Little-ish classic- like a min-chapter book with pen and ink drawings. You can read it over two or three bedtimes for best effect. The drawings are amazing- beautfiul, sweet, detailed- and Isaac loves to look at each picture as I turn the page.
The writing appears to Isaac to be just a wonderful children's book, but as a fan of Tony Millionaire's adult work, I can pick up on the cool, inside vibe that gives parents rewards and chuckles as you read. My favorite kind of book- I don't zone out when I'm reading it to him!
I love love love it. And there you have it.
The best illustrator...ever!.......2002-02-01
I thouroughly enjoyed the book, as did my 2 year old sister. She kept asking for "more Sock-a Monkey". Awesome.
