4.5 stars.......2007-09-18
The book has clear maps that DEF. help in getting around. The subway locations were clearly marked, and you get a close view of each section of the city. My only complaint is that it always seems like the restaurant, or store, or coffee shop, etc. that I am looking for is never in the book.
Best guide for NYC- the only one you will need!.......2007-09-12
This book has saved my neck on more than one occasion. I use it daily to get around the city. It has everything you need. We liked it so much we bought an extra one for our guests when they come to visit- don't want to be parted from it. Never know when you will need to find a great restaurant in mid-town or look up the closest post office or bank or library.... Not to mention the great fold out map of the metro at the back of the book. BRILLIANT buy this book and you won't need to waste any money on others.
Awesome.......2007-08-24
I think this book(let) is just awesome. It comes in a size of my pocket-agenda and the many detailed maps (depending on the points of interesent you want it to be shown) are a great helper. I'm going to NYC soon and not as a tourist, but as a visitor, so I really don't need to wait in line in front of Empire State Building - I'll rather browse this book!
Not for Tourist.......2007-07-20
This is a great book if you are moving to NY. Great size - useful maps and great things you need to know if you are staying any length of time.
Enormously Helpful..........2007-07-17
This is by far one of the most useful products I've purchased of late. I recently travelled to the city for the second time, and decided to get this in preparation. My friends came to rely on my "little black book," and I was constantly whipping it out...to check the subway map, to look for the nearest restaurant, or to check out museum info. As I begin to prepare for moving to the city next year, I'm not letting this guide out of my sight.

Everything you always wanted to know about the tourism industry in one convenient source! This book is written with the serious reader in mind, but it's easy reading style will appeal to any curious mind. It covers everything from operating issues to fun facts that will help you be a more informed consumer. Once you pick it up, you won't want to put it down.
I won't leave home without it!.......2000-01-06
This book contains the most current and comprehensive coverage tourism industry on the market today. I enjoyed reading this book due to the excellent writing style of the authors. It is very well organized so finding topics of interest was no problem. It lists many citations to other sources and is well researched. The author's educational credentials and other accomplishments are listed (and are very impressive.) Cook and Yale have done extensive research and publishing in tourism. I find this work very credible and user-friendly. I know that I won't leave home without it!

Hiaasen's best, hands down........2007-09-19
If your reading experience is like mine, you tend to like the first book by a particular author best, simply because you read it first. Tourist Season was my first Carl Hiaasen, but I'm convinced that it's NOT just my favorite because it was my first. This is an absolute gem of a book, and I've yet to see its equal within this genre.
Some of my favorite writers are my favorites because they write great stories, some because of their wonderful use of language, and some because of their intriguing characters. Carl Hiaasen is among those ranks for all three reasons. He will have you laughing out loud, opining on politics, and on the edge of your seat, all on the same page. I cannot recommend Tourist Season highly enough.
Tourist Season.......2007-09-10
Typical Hiassen, not one of his best but true to form, a foot in reality and the other one in a world of lunatics
A Riot of Fun Terror!!!.......2007-07-22
Tourist Season is a rapid fire, lightning fast read that brings together all the things that make a book a classic. This is just plain fun from start to finish. The macbre horror is mixed with humor so perfectly that you catch yourself rooting for both sides. As another review stated, "Terrorism was once funny"...this is from a more innocent time, where not-so-innocent acts attempt to fight against a stark and sad reality. The hero of the story is just as torn as the reader as things just seem to get worse all the time. Tourist Season is not a mystery by any stretch of the imagination, but it is an awesome read that I highly reccomend. Any reader who is also a Jimmy Buffet fan will find the inspiration for more than one of his songs as well as a slew of lines that made it into his lyrics. Just plain cool! A MUST read!
Not one of my favorite Hiaasen .......2007-07-21
I am a Hiaasen fan, but this was too angry for my tastes. The trademark Hiaasen humor just wasn't there. Maybe I just missed Skink!
Every Florida Native's dream.......2007-07-10
A team of unlikely misfits make for some serious humor in what many Florida natives probably secretly dream about, doing away with the tourists. I found myself actually laughing out loud with Hiaasen's sharp and witty humor. The schemes of the antagonists to poetically do-in the tourist market for Southern Florida were quite inventive. Let me just say, part of me was rooting for the alligator. Tourist Season being the first Hiaasen I read I was not at all disappointed. In fact it was quite the opposite; it was the beginning of an addiction.

A great food research guide when planning a trip!!.......2007-08-02
How many times have you gone on vacation and you end up at some tourist trap (Hardrock Cafe,Planet Hollywood,ect...) eating the WORST food on earth? Well help is here people! My girl and I LOVE to travel and LOVE good food. That's why when planning a trip we do all the research for: attractions, museums, night life, bars, and our favorite... FOOD! Best fried chicken? Loveless Cafe in Nasville!! Later i found out that Loveless Cafe is Martha Stewart's favorite for breakfast!! I'm telling you... :)
WARNING: You'll finish your vacation weighing more than you started with!.......2007-07-15
I remember reading a much earlier edition of this guide, probably the original not-thick volume published in 1978. I've always traveled a lot, doing genealogical research, and that pursuit takes one more often into small towns than big cities. Everyplace you go now, it seems, the fast food chains have completely taken over, but there actually are plenty of mouth-watering one-of-a-kind eateries left, if you get lucky -- or if you read this book. This edition includes some 600 establishments (200 more than even the last edition, even though another hundred have been dropped), most of them in the categories of joints, diners, parlors, and drive-ins. The idea is to find restaurants that cater to locals, that represent the essence of their region or locality, and that are low in price. Naturally, I went looking for places I had eaten myself and I found many of my favorites: Hoover's and Threadgill's in Austin, Krause's Café in New Braunfels (the best chicken fried steak in the world comes from the German heritage of the Texas Hill Country), Sonny Bryan's and Gennie's Bishop Grill in Dallas, the Frontier in Albuquerque, Pasqual's in Santa Fe, Lynn's Paradise in Louisville, the Moonlite Bar-B-Q in Owensboro, Kentucky (where some of my ancestors lived, right across the river from Indiana), and the Camp Washington Chili Parlor in Cincinnati (which, in my opinion, produces the best Cincinnati-style five-way chili in the city). Here in Louisiana, New Orleans alone accounts for five listings -- and that doesn't even include the haute cuisine, high-dollar restaurants for which NOLA is famous. (Of the places they list, Mother's is a regular stop for us when we're in the city.) But there's also Boudin King over in Jennings, Middendorf's in Pass Manchac (forty-five minutes from home; we go there three or four times a year), Brenda's down in New Iberia, and Prejean's over in Lafayette. Admittedly, there are a few other places I like, and which fit their criteria, but which aren't included; no place at all in San Antonio, for instance. But the Sterns are anxious for recommendations from their readers, so I'll probably send them some suggestions. This is a great car book when you travel -- and especially when you leave the Interstate.
It is not a road trip without road food.......2007-07-14
No matter where you live, if you're looking for some unusual, fun and funky places to eat, Roadfood by Jane and Michael Stern will give you all the recommendations you need. This book is written so that you "road warriors" can find endless amounts of tasty treasures.
For example, if you're longing for lobster - or clams, mussels, shrimp or oysters - then head on down to Abbott's Lobster in the Rough in Noank, Connecticut. Bring a bottle of your favorite wine - and your own tablecloth - and enjoy the ambiance.
Or consider Chez Lenard Sidewalk Café and Catering in Ridgefield, Connecticut, where you can order up Le Hot Dog Choucroute Alsacienee or Le Hot Dog Garniture Suisse. Expect to be served from a man in a chef's hat with a Manhattan-style sidewalk cart.
Roadfood demonstrates how, no matter where you travel in your car and no matter how many road trips you take, there is always a new culinary adventure waiting for you right around the corner.
fun to read.......2007-06-27
My only complaint about this book (and their other books) is too much space is devoted to the East and the South. I would like to see more entries in the West, and South West. I am a foodie and love to read about food.
Proud user for 3 years.......2007-04-13
I've been using the Roadfood guides (and their website, which is much more comprehensive) for 3 years now. I've tried probably about 20 of their recommendations (including Nicks Roast Beef in MA, Ted Drewes in MO, Maine Diner in ME, Clam Box in MA, White Hut in MA, The Frontier Restaurant in NM, & the Capital Reef Inn in UT. All were VERY good recommendations.
The tragedy is that many of these local places close down every year for various reasons. You have to check the road food website or call the actual restaurant to make sure they are still in business and in fact open on the day you want to visit.

Customer Reviews:
Tourists need to see the Not For Tourists Guide to Chicago.......2007-09-20
I'm a tourist, but I liked the Not For Tourists Guide to Chicago. The format makes it easy to use. The first part is a series of neighborhood maps. There's a map showing locations of mundane services (like banking) with a listing on the facing page. Flip the page and you find another map of the neighborhood you just viewed, but it shows entertainment, restaurants, etc. The second part of the book is a series of topical articles (parks, airports, etc.) The concisely expressed opinions and loads of reference material make it very handy.
Disappointed--it's old!.......2007-09-16
What a disappointment! It was listed as the most recent book, yet when my daughter began her term at UIC (U of I at Chicago) they were using the 2008 book! Boo hoo!
Must have for any city resident!.......2007-04-08
This book was given to me as a present shortly before moving to Chicago. Not only was it helpful for me to learn about my new neighborhood/city before I moved in, but it continues to be extremely useful even now. Lists everything from every day needs like banks, post offices, gas stations, grocery stores to restaurants, coffee houses, shops, movie theaters/stores, etc. The book is _amazing_ and even gives touristy information about the museums, transportation, sports arenas, parks, and so on. A DEFINITE MUST HAVE for residents both new and old!!!!
5 stars doesn't do this book justice. I'd give it 10.
thorough but lacking.......2007-01-10
The NFT is full of useful maps and some useful info. But I am dissapointed by the icons used to show location on the maps. It is sometimes difficult to figure out where things are based on the icons because they are not numbered and there are often 15 coffee shops on one map. Also, some of the useful info that is included is not so useful. I called the five cab services reccommended for airport rides and all of them were outrageously priced, and one of them was a restaurant, so I ended up finding a cab with my own research. I am also dissappointed by the fact that it lists all the Dunkin Donuts and McDonalds but leaves off some of the cities best independent stores, which I would think would be what Not-For-Tourists guide would be focused on. It's good to have, but not extensive.
Useful, but brief.......2007-01-08
Helpful book. Great maps. Quick and dirty. Not quite up to date.
The descriptions of every restaurant, club, store, etc. are as brief as the incomplete sentences I used to begin my review (so if those terse sentences were more helpful to you than frustrating, buy it). If you want thorough information about various hot spots in town, this probably isn't the book for you. It will work, however, if you just want a quick reference of addresses and phone numbers, and you don't want to read a two-paragraph description of a place (like one you might find in a standard tourist's guide book). Think of it as a portable white pages. Although some short descriptions are all you need (J&C Inn is listed as "Dingy outside -- best sandwiches in town inside." Another restaurant is described as "Great food, horrible service") and others are funny (a leather store's description only says "Come to daddy"), others leave you wanting more (one place says "Guilt free ice cream", and another simply says "Very stylish").
If you are new to the city (like I am) and need to see a map before understanding where something is (Old Town? Andersonville? Gold Coast?), then this is a good buy. The book divides the city into 44 maps, and then references the map numbers where various places of interest are located so that you can find them more easily. There is also a pull-out map in the back. I generally toss this book into my oversized purse every morning, and when a friend calls and asks to meet me at a restaurant, I whip out NFT and get there without much difficulty (and because of the sleek black and silver cover, and the words "Not for Tourists" on the front, I don't feel as embarrassed -- or vulnerable -- reading it on the L as I might with other guidebooks). The maps are by far the best reason to buy this guide.
It should be noted that, although this is titled "2007", it is not entirely up to date. It was published in autumn 2006, and was obviously written before that. Therefore, some useful information about newer locations is not there. The pink line of the L is not in it, for example. Millenium station doesn't appear to be there either. Also, it is not an exhaustive guide. There's a great used bookstore near my apartment that's been there for a decade, but it's not listed in the book. And the bar I hit up for karaoke once a week? Also not in the book.
My friend liked my book so much that she bought one for herself. I am glad that I have it, but I think I'm going to look into getting an additional guide with lengthier descriptions of restaurants and nightlife.

Not for me.......2007-08-03
First, the font on this book is so small it is virtually unreadable without a magnifying glass. Second, there is no day tour info or comparisons or restaurant advice or reviews. Book is primarily a collection of maps and listings.
Great SF info!.......2007-07-29
I lived in SF for ten years and this book was great at reminding me of fun places I used to go to (and wanted to return to) and new places to try. Great assortment of maps. The book is segmented in a very helpful way.
the big four for S.F........2007-03-18
A cool little book if you live around here. I like that they keep it updated. Three hundred and fifty pages, all good stuff to know. Makes a nice companion to my Golden Gate Trailblazer, Lonely Planet San Francisco and Zagat guides that I use all the time.
This saved my life in SF!.......2006-11-09
Hi! I'am a College student that attends San Francisco State University and I have to say this little book has saved me a lot of heartache. For example I was caught downtown last weekend at 12:30 a.m. the regular MUNI(SF bus system) was done for the evening. The OWL(late night bus system) was running but only has a few locations, I decided to consult my little black book and sure enough the OWL system map was there. My little black book has traveled around my dorm floor its know by the residents as the "bible" thanks NFT
ps. Im going to grad school in Chicago so NFT Chicago is on my list
2006 ed.
Good for SF, but not as helpful for the East Bay.......2006-10-03
This would be vastly improved if it included maps of Oakland and/or Berkeley. Space could be made by eliminating some of the less useful "general information" pages at the end.

Customer Reviews:
Map of Panama.......2007-05-12
This is a very durable, easy to read map of the country. It lacks much specificity on Panama City, which is too bad as it is hard to find a good map of the city. Perhaps this will be a future enhancement.
Panama Canal Cursing Maps.......2007-05-12
This will be a good map to take along on the cruise to see ware we are.
Panama Map.......2007-05-09
Map was of good quality. Many streets were not listed but this map is the best I have been able to find.
My problem however was with the shipping from supplier. It arrived 3 weeks late. I reordered through AOL and received the map within 3 days. The original order arrived later but the enevlope was empty...had no map. I real hassle since I had planned to visit Panama during that week.
Waterproof Panama Map by ITMB.......2007-01-31
High quality detailed map of the country and better than you can purchase in Panama.Have purchased 2 of them.
Waterproof Panama Map.......2007-01-18
Great detail on the map. I will find out how waterproof it is during the next few months (in Panama) . . .
Book Description
Not For Tourists Guide to Boston features listings of key services, restaurants, shops, schools, entertainment venues, public transportation, parks, and more, along with helpful detailed maps. NFT Boston contains everything residents need to take advantage of local services and resource, written by people who live and work in Boston.
Customer Reviews:
Useful as yellow pages.......2007-09-27
NFT is very useful as portable yellow pages with a map when you're in a new neighborhood. It's less useful as a tourbook for actually telling you what to do. When new to an area, though, it's great since it details everything in the area (banks, restaurants, whatever) and has superhelpful transportation maps for bus routes.
Print is TINY!.......2007-05-13
I didn't even try to read it. The print is TINY!
Not Just for Locals.......2007-01-07
The wallet-sized "Not For Tourists 2007 Guide to Boston" may have been written specifically for the city native, but it's also very informative for the occasional visitor. Approximately 40% of the book contains maps of each city neighborhood and of Boston's surrounding locations. Each map is marked with icons for transportation, essential needs, and tourist musts. To help with finding specific addresses, cross-streets are even used in the address locater.
The "Not For Tourists 2007 Guide to Boston" assumes that you know what you're looking for, but you just don't know how to find it. No city-related fact is left out and all of the information is extremely current. The print is tiny, but nothing a good pair of reading glasses can't handle. Enjoy.
