Book Description

Do you possess great wealth, or are you working hard to accumulate it? In either case, this book is a godsend for you.

Based on her own experiences and those of her clients with the Dark Side of wealth, Thayer Willis shines a light into an area seldom thought about, let alone addressed, in our materialistic culture.

In Navigating the Dark Side of Wealth, Ms. Willis details the pitfalls that great wealth can lead people into: the morally corrupting and emotionally stunting effects that having material riches can cause, and the pain and heartache that ensue. More importantly, within these pages she provides the needed guidance that, if taken to heart, can lead troubled inheritors to more balanced and fulfilling relationships.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not just for the wealthy.......2007-05-19

Not just for the wealthy, Willis accurately describes the situation of young middle-class Americans born into a society of abundance. Her description of the Agression - Assertiveness - Passivity continuum and struggle we middle-classers' seem to have with entitlement was worth the book alone.

Willis case-study style makes each chapter enjoyable and easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Great For Non-Inheritors, too: Fascinating and Captivating.......2007-05-15

This book is fascinating and thought provoking! With all of the stories and case studies, it is a captivating and a very quick read. Although I am not a mega-inheritor, I could very much relate to the perspectives and suggestions made by the author. The book provides insight and compassion into the challenges of dealing with great wealth, and guidance that actually applies to anyone with any amount of money. There is so much sound advice in this book, that I think if the author re-titled it as "Navigating the Dark Side of Money", and removed the references to large sums of wealth, it could easily become a best-seller for the main-stream, moderate-income population! The author is geniune and honest about the importance of Christianity in her life, yet - as a non-Christian - I did not find it overbearing or at all inappropriate. Her commentary on spirituality is inclusive and I think would be well-received by anyone of any religion or spiritual practice. She even inspired me to look up the few Biblical references she made to add insight to her views!

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful to show some of the struggles of wealthy.......2007-01-09

I read this book as part of my ongoing research on money and psychology. I found the author's story to be helpful in understanding the problems of meaninglessness, addiction and loneliness that sometimes come with wealth. Are there families who handle wealth well and give their children the character strength and knowledge they will need to manage the energy of money? Yes of course there are..they are not the ones having the problems. This book is really a good resource for those who are having struggles similar to Thayer Willis...to help them see some of the dynamics of the family and the dynamics of wealth that need to be managed.A good contribution to the field.Dr. Mary Gresham

5 out of 5 stars Opportunities for Young or Old Inheritors.......2006-01-30

Excellent book for individuals, who have inherited money or have accumulated a large amount of wealth at any early age and retired. Gives examples of opportunities for enriching ones life and providing knowledge of how to maintain wealth for future generations.

5 out of 5 stars An Important Book for the Right Reasons.......2003-10-02

Navigating the Dark Side of Wealth is an extremely valuable book for all the right reasons, because its focus is not on accumulating and multiplying material riches but on fostering the emotional and spiritual values so vital to coping with the destructive allurements, issues and challenges that confront many inheritors of material wealth today. It is a text on developing character and morality -- on protecting one's soul against the pervasive ravages of human greed.

Book Description

Ever since he became one of several scientists chosen to raise apes bred by the pharmaceutical giant SAC, Dr. Jim Dutton, his daughter Brett, and the bonobo ape Umber have been a family. Umber types, reads, speaks sign language, and even contemplates the nature of God. Then a colleague forces Jim to confront the reality he's tried to ignore: Umber and the other SAC apes are "augmented" apes, more similar to early hominids than to anthropoids. When SAC abruptly demands Umber's immediate return, it becomes vital for Jim to discover why the corporation created this new species. The quest for answers will take Jim and his family to Africa where the struggle to uncover SAC's secrets becomes a fight for survival.

"...an exciting, provocative story." (Publishers Weekly)

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Box of Rocks Stupid.......2006-07-20

This book could serve as a prequel to Planet of the Apes. Of course with characters as stupid as the ones in this book, then maybe the apes should take over.

Basically a fabulous rich scientist decides to genetically alter Bonobos by increasing their cranial cpacity to the size of a human, making the apes self-aware and smarter than the average character in this book.

Fine premise and you do keep turning the pages, but give me a break.

Valerie is the hard charging news reporter that walks out of the hospital after giving birth.

Jim was her love interest and he still carries a torch for Valeria, meanwhile he is raising their daughter Brett.

Brett watches mom on the evening news.

Then there is Dana the research assistant who has a crush on Jim, but gets forgotten two thirds of the way through the book.

This disfunctional family somehow manages to have a happy reunion a dozen years later. All is forgiven and there are no regrets.

All of them are more concerned about the welfare of Umber the Bonobo.

The authors did a much better job with the monkeys and are in danger of letting the monkeys outshine their human counterparts.

4 out of 5 stars Good story line.......2005-03-17

U.S. scientists try to raise bonobo chimpanzees in their homes - very intelligent, genetically engineered chimpanzees. The smartest is Umber, who shows intelligent that of a human being. When the truth comes out why Umber is so intelligent, she, along with her caretakers, is send to Africa to a specially prepared fascility, where the secrets are being held. What the scientists don't realize is that there are very dark horrors awaiting them there - horros created by humans themselves. Original and entertaining.

3 out of 5 stars Good.......2004-11-23

Interesting story. Good character development as is typical with both of the Gears. HOWEVER, the editor needed some time off before reviewing this one.

4 out of 5 stars great read.......2004-05-08

I agree with most of the earlier reviews - good and bad. Is it a rip off of Michael Crichton's Congo as well as Robin Cook? Heck yeah. But does that make it bad? Nope. It's a well-written rip-off and certainly entertaining.

I bought this at a lame used book store just for something to read. I had zero expectations and would not have been surprised in the least had it turned out to be sucky. The characters were very real to the point that I was able to read a situation and know each character well enough to know how he or she would react.

A *big* failing of this book was grammar. There are several points within the book that the tense of the story changes - without meaning or explaination. The sentences go from "He walked... and he saw..." to "He walks... and he sees..." I cannot stress how annoying this was. It was like a giant neon sign saying "HEY! We've got two authors here! And yes, they write alone sometimes!" I could understand this short-coming if it were, say, a dream sequence or a flash back or a separate story within the story. But no. Just bad form. It's things like that that tend to rip me right out of my excapist fanasy and right into proof-reading mode. I'm not sure if all of their works have this horrifying flaw since this is the first one I've had the pleasure of reading, but the authors *really* need to work on this.

All in all? Run to it.

5 out of 5 stars Dark Inheritance: A Suspenseful Tale of Intrigue.......2003-11-13

Even though the technological terminology makes this book challenging, I found Dark Inheritance by W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neal Gear to be an excellent read. Never before have I found myself so completely engrossed in a book. Reading Dark Inheritance was a heart-pounding thrill ride with suspense and surprise at every twist and turn of the author's journey.
Jim Dutton and his two daughters embark on a harrowing flight from the powerful SAC Corporation Determined to keep it's lucrative animal testing program hidden from the public. Jim's problems begin when he becomes attached to a bonobo chimp named Umber that he is given by the SAC Corporation for research. After twelve years of working with her, Jim not only feels that Umber is his own child, he also realizes there is something extraordinary about her. She is to smart.
When Jim begins to investigate, the SAC Corp. steps in and orders him to come to Africa. When strange and murderous things begin to happen at the SAC Corp. compound, Jim must enlist the help of a reporter to get his family home alive.
Dark Inheritance has a hauntingly plausible story line. The book explores capitalism's reign in the face of cutting edge medical achievements and the ethical choices that follow. The reader should expect interesting facts accompanied by graphic violence. Only the most daring readers will enjoy such a combination of exotic and grotesque novel. Parts of this book had me shaking with fear and others had me crying.
Another aspect of this book that I really enjoyed was the author's portrayal of Africa. The informative description of the jungle really made me feel as if I were there with the moist hot air all around. Being taken away to an unknown world where danger lurks in the shadows proved to be a refreshing escape.
Most enjoyable to me however were the characters. Umber, the bonobo is so much like a human that several times, I found I had to remind myself that she was a Chimpanzee. The characters in this book display so much courage and such a strong family bond that I couldn't help but feel an emotional attachment to them. The last page of this book was extremely sad because I felt that I was losing friends.
For all of these reasons, Dark Inheritance is the best book I have ever read. Never have I been so engrossed and felt so many emotions while reading a book. This is definitely one that I had a hard time letting go and was upset to see the end of. I highly recommend Dark Inheritance and look forward to starting the next novel that Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neal Gear publish.

5 out of 5 stars Inheritance.......2007-05-09

This is the first book in the Von Carstein trilogy. The author is new to Black Library but not to the art of the written word, and with this novel Steven Savile makes a bold entrance onto the stage of Warhammer Fiction, demanding a place among the best of the Warhammer novelists.

This book begins with the rise of Von Carstein as the lord of all Sylvania and then launches on a intricate plot of war, sacrifice, and tragedy in the Old World. The tale of the vampire lords is not a happy one and Mr. Savile pulls no punches in this tale of a world on the verge of collapse and an empire that can barely stop infighting long enough to be conquered.

After the opening scene, we meet two witch hunters in a quest across the Sylvanian lands. Here Mr. Savile shows the most powerful tool in the writer's arsenal, one sorely lacking in game tie-in fiction these days: the ability to create yearning. We connect to these characters, share their pain and their loss. We see them heading farther and farther into the lands of the Arisen and follow them with a sense of dread. "This thing," we think to ourselves, "cannot end well."

Inheritance is an ambitious novel, jumping from character to character as the Old World falls to the might of Vlad Von Carstein. Mr. Savile does not quite create the uniqueness and richness of characters we find in the works of George RR Martin, but he doesn't need to. This is an ambitious work, but not that ambitious.

What he does draw is a vivid tapestry of pain and loss, of despair in the face of the hopelessness. Vlad is the unstoppable force and in this novel the Empire spends its time searching in vein (pun intended) of an unmovable object.

The only thing I can really say bad about this novel is a certain sluggishness throughout the beginning of act two. After those first brilliant chapters, his new characters don't quite connect to the reader with the same aching passion and while they are well executed, the lack stands out just when a novel needs a fresh shot of interest to carry the reader firmly into the middle. In fairness though, if the beginning was a little weaker I might not have had this problem. The introduction of the witch hunters, for me at least, created and internal hype the middle had a hard time satisfying.

But this novel comes through at the end, filling me with the desire to immediately pick up the sequel (which, alas, I wasn't able to do). In the end, the book brings the reader back to that initial connection of feeling, book-ending the entire plot very nicely.

It's not surprising, a quick search on Amazon brings up two pages of titles by Mr. Savile and his story in Writers of the Future XIX (later expanded and published as the novella Houdini's Last Illusion) was possibly my favorite story in the anthology. This isn't a first or second novel, with all their problems.

One piece of advice. I've read the history of this war at least five or six times, but I've never paid it enough attention to memorize the details. I didn't reread these events before devouring this book. I appreciated the sense of discovery, the anticipation of not knowing whether a historical character lived or died.

I recommend you do the same.

4 out of 5 stars Inherent Evil!.......2006-12-19

This is my first Steven Savile novel to read. And it won't be my last!

After devouring this awesome vampire dark fantasy epic, I have already purchased Book II: Dominion. Yes, it was that good.

In this novel, Book I:Inheritance, the evil dark vampire lord, Von Carstein, builds and creates his own massive army of the various types of the dead, from werewolves to wights, all marching to annihilate human civilization in a purely dark fantasy world.

There are numerous characters in this book, both monster and human, and all extremely interesting to read about. With loads of twists and turns, with various character's storylines, Steven Savile still manages to carry it all off with bloody panache.

With loads of blood and guts action, utilizing everything from magical swords that sing and hum for blood, to daggers and crossbows, (No guns, despite the futuristic years shown on each chapter), this is a purely dark fantasy sure to please bloodsuckers everywhere.

This dark and diabolical book is waiting for you to devour.

Go ahead. Take a walk on the wild side...

5 out of 5 stars The beginning of the end........2006-05-03

As usual, the beginning began at the end. It was late in the winter of 1797, within Drakenhof Castle, during the last few minutes of Otto van Drak's life. The old Count of Sylvania refused to die because his brother, Leopold, would inherit the title. So the old man held onto life, each breath filled with agony, in hope that something would change. His wish was granted by the arrival of a nobleman, Vlad von Carstein. By marrying Otto's daughter, Isabella, Vlad cheated Leopold of his title, only seconds before he cheated Leopold of his life. Vlad became Count of Sylvania. The ending had begun.

In the year 2009, Vlad finds one page from the nine Books of Nagash. The single sheet holds powerful necromantic magic. Thus Vlad begins raising the dead to create his own army. His legion of the dead soon begins its quest to overthrow the Empire. His vampiric wife, Isabella, stands at his side. His vampiric sword, keens in his hand, demanding blood.

Zombies, ghouls, and vampires kill the living. Then the newly dead raise and turn on the very people they had fought with only moments before. As each living person dies, Vlad's undead horde swells. Even though some of the vampires are slain for good by decapitation, Vlad remains standing. That is not to say that Vlad did not ever get decapitated. Yet somehow, Vlad always raises again, a scar on his throat being the only sign that his head had ever been cut off. There seems to be no way to stop him. Humans have become cattle.

***** This is the first in a trilogy. From the first page to the last, author Steven Savile brings you the stuff of nightmares. This book's tale goes until the late winter of the year 2051. (Book two will begin from there.) Readers are given the first chapter of the second book at the end. It promises more nightmares. There are so many chilling scenes that I am amazed the pages do not freeze into chunks of ice. All gothic, Vlad, and vampire fans simply MUST read this novel. *****

5 out of 5 stars Vlad Von Carstein of Sylvania.......2006-03-02

I've just readed this book. It was great. I know, this book only arrives at stores in USA at 31 march, but I've pre-order it from the Black Library and so I've received in middle february.

Well this is a great book that will enrich not only the fans of warhammer but also the fans of vampires. If you play with the Vampire Count I think you will liked it. It won't tell you anything you don't know (About the army) but It will give some depht and history to your army. I think you will like it.

Good Things : The characters and the plot itself.
Things to improve in the next books: I think Mr. Savile would do better to take some depht to the vampires and take more time developing it's history. (well this will be fruitless even if he reads it since the second book it's already written lol)

||Minor Spoillers Ahead.. Jump ahead||

Don't take me wrong. The characters are great... We've got, of course, Vlad von Carstein. We read about it's rise and grow of his empire. How he come to be the ruler of Sylvania and finally the strike on the empire.
Something on the story I didn't like. When the thief Felix Mann stole the ring that gave immortality to the Count. It was too damn easy. Then Vlad outburst and strike recklessly the empire fortress and died. It was too quick. Bah..
It was the only thing I didn't like.

||Minor Spoillers Ended||

Well we've got a lot of characters beside the Vlad and Isabella von Carstein. Inbetween the chapters of Vlad we've the history of this minor characters.
We've got Jon Skellan and Stefan Fischer the witch-hunters, Ganz the human chancellor of Vlad. Then we've got Krueger a knight of White Wolf and the thief Felix Mann. And of course other minor characters that appear in some chapters.

In the end it is a great book but it does not finish here. More two books to be released. The next in September. It will be great 'cause some of this characters histories didn't end. I will be awaiting.

About the writing: As you know Black Library has a majority of the writters from UK. This author is American. Some words were unknown to me (I am portuguese) but apart from that the book brings forth the characteristic mayhem of the Warhammer World.

This little-known classic by the late Marion Zimmer Bradley is a wonderful treat for readers feeling the loss of this marvelous author. Part of Bradleys beloved Light series, Witch Hill is a sensuous story of witchcraft, demonic possession, and true love.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Deserves less stars-DO NOT READ.......2007-03-12

This book was just plain horrible. Seriously! It is not worth the paper it was printed on. It is a half-developed story about a young woman who falls into some sort of "witch" cult where there is sacrifice and sex rites and it was all very, very creepy. All I saw it as was a way to perpetuate a myth of pagans being devil worshippers who have orgies and kill people.

Don't waste your time!

1 out of 5 stars Major disappointment.......2007-02-16

So not every book an author crafts can measure up to her best work, but this falls so far short that it's embarrassing. If her name wasn't on it, I wouldn't think Bradley (or her estate) even wrote this book. I won't rehash what other reviewers have to say, but they hit the nail on the head. Laughable dialogue (and not in a good way), unbelievable actions, and the most awkward wrap-up of an ending I've encountered. Good premise, BAD delivery. And I don't know who should be faulted: the author or her editor.

1 out of 5 stars Genuine disappointment.......2006-11-04

I have a great deal of respect for Marion Zimmer Bradley as an author, especially for The Mists of Avalon. Therefore, after reading this gobbler I could hardly believe they were written by the same person. The character development is virtually nonexistent, the dialogue-really, the writing style in general- is clanky, and the plot seems to be little more than a frame for sex scenes. The ending also comes across as rather too convenient. It's a shame that Bradley, who has created strong female protagonists in other works, never really allows Sara Latimer to grow much or make a firm demonstration of her personal strength. In short, pass on this book.

2 out of 5 stars Witchcraft cliche with a screwball ending .......2006-04-27

Sara Latimer has lost all three members of her immediate family within a matter of days. The funerals have wiped out her meager savings and she cannot afford to keep the family apartment in New York. When a letter, addressed to Sara's father, arrives announcing the inheritance of property in a rural, coastal town, Sara thinks she's been saved; not only has she just found herself a place to live, but there has been an offer to purchase the historic property from a local pastor. Telling herself that she will only live in the house long enough to complete the illustrations for her most recent children's book before selling to the interested party, she packs her bags and heads to Arkham, Massachusetts and the property on Witch Hill Road. Little does Sara know that Matthew Hay, the "pastor" who has offered to buy the property, is actually the leader of a local coven and he believes Sara to be the reincarnation of her great aunt, the former priestess and most valued member of Matthew's congregation...

Marion Zimmer Bradley's tale of witchcraft in the rural Northeast starts out strong, immediately grabs the attention of the reader, and then slowly but surely sputters to a frightfully prosaic ending. It seems as if Ms. Bradley began writing in an enthusiastic frenzy and then lost interest in her characters and her story line, bringing it all to a hasty ending; perhaps in an attempt to either meet a deadline or write a more interesting novel. The ostensible mystery that surrounds Matthew Hay and his coven is ultimately revealed as nothing more than overtly trite descriptions of witchcraft (e.g. naked men and women drugged and wildly copulating in a graveyard while worshiping a maniacal deviant in a horned mask). The possession of Sara is never clearly accounted for and her transition from wholesome girl next door to fanatical nymphomaniac is just as abrupt as it is absurd. And, finally, we have the young doctor's involvement in Sara's inevitable rescue; not only is it inconceivable, it is poorly illustrated and (let's be honest) downright hilarious. The introduction to the novel is so spirited, so well written and so full of potential (thus earning it the two stars) that I just can't imagine why and/or how it ended the way it did; it really could have been so much more! I can honestly say that I was grossly disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars A Witch cannot Love.......2005-10-16

Sara Latimer is the last of her family. After the shocking deaths of her parents and brother Sara is left all alone in the world with no direction or plan. After receiving a letter regarding the estate to her late aunt (also named Sara Latimer) sara decicides to leave New York City and travel into the county and spend the summer in her new house on witch hill.
It is here in this rual small country town that Sara learns the secrets to her family's past.

Upon arriving at the town Sara notices the odd reactions she receives from the fellow towns people, although there is only one person Sara takes particular interest in. While Sara discovers her creepy and some what seductive house she finds herself trapped in a cultic plan to make her the priestess of her late aunt's coven. The only power that can save Sara from her aunt's spirit and her coven's follwers is a man name Brian who can teach Sara how to love, something that a witch cannot do.

I found myself loving this book for it kept my interest while introducing interesting and gothic characters. Witch Hill is known for it's erotic flavor so I wouldn't recommand this to some one who blushes easily. I particularly admired Marion Zimmer Bradley's style of writing. The story was a quick read with a lot of plot and depth. I recommend this book to someone who wants a gothic tale told in the 70's.

It gives complete, balanced rules for playing characters that are like their human brothers, but have a genetic link to the gods of the past. Not only are new regular/prestige/advanced classes, new feats, new occupations, new items, etc etc etc given, powers of the titans(the god-gene inheritors) are given for each distinct legacy. What may be best about this book is the complete background history and state of the world and organizations that are competing for control and knowledge of the events that led to the formation of this campaign world. I don't want to give everything away, so you'll have to buy the book to find out more. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone that wants to play a campaign in a world abruptly changed by an event that unleashes great powers onto an unsuspecting modern world.

5 out of 5 stars BACK COVER REVIEW.......2007-03-14

When beautiful and penniless Susannah first laid eyes on Mark Dewaine, she hated him.

Then circumstances led her to accept a post at Landeric, the legendary home of the Dewaines. Soon Mark began to appear in a different light - the light of love. But Susannah had little hope that the proud heir to Landeric would look in her direction.

Susannah did not know then of the disturbing secret of her birth - nor of the way it would change her whole life. Nor did she know of the terrible dangers that lay hidden behind a loving mask.

Here is the spellbinding tale of a lovely young woman pursued by a proud family's shameful past...from a Cornwall mansion to the fabled Crystal Palace in London to glittering Venice...and coming ever closer to the terrible menace of her Dark Inheritance.
