An Introduction to Statistical Thermodynamics
ASIN: 0815320515 |
Book Description
This text shows how many complex behaviors of molecules can result from a few simple physical processes. A central theme is the idea that simplistic models can give surprisingly accurate insights into the workings of the molecular world. Written in a clear and student-friendly style, the book gives an excellent introduction to the field for novices. It should also be useful to those who want to refresh their understanding of this important field, and those interested in seeing how physical principles can be applied to the study of problems in the chemical, biological, and material sciences. Furthermore, Molecular Driving Forces contains a number of features including:
*449 carefully produced figures illustrating the subject matter
*178 worked examples in the chapters which explain the key concepts and show their practical applications
*The text is mathematically self-contained, with 'mathematical toolkits' providing the required maths
*Advanced material that might not be suitable for some elementary courses is clearly delineated in the text
*End-of-chapter references and suggestions for further reading
Customer Reviews:
spectacular introduction!.......2007-03-10
I have this book assigned as a text book for one of my classes and it is superb. Very clear explaination from the very basics of statistics and how it builds up to thermodynamics and beyond. The book succintly explains all of the necessary math and has instructive examples to drive the point home. I really like this book!
Good enough to be self-study book.......2006-02-26
This book is really amazing, gives good examples and alot of questions. It is easy to follow, but it hasn't the whole math of many derivations.
Want to understand the physics if life? Need to read this!.......2003-08-02
The topic of this book, the physical chemistry of molecules, especially those relevant to biology, is one of the most challenging courses to a college student in chemist. But these authors have tried to make it easy for you - and they succeed. They used figures, pictures and analogies to help you to understand some of the most sophisticated concepts in science. For example entropy. The authors are leading researchers in the field and they brought a unique perspective to the subject; the writing is very lucid.
Book Description
An Unstoppable Force will excite and inspire readers about being part of the Church that God had in mind! A "force" created to change the world. A Church that is engaged with its community, daring to cut itself free from atrophied practices and programs to flourish in creative and compelling worship. A Church that risks reaching out to our jaded culture with "outside the box" expressions of faith and love.
Customer Reviews:
A Must-Read.......2007-01-19
Read this book - it will energize and focus you if you are a believer. If you are not, it will cause you to rethink what your perceptions are about church.
An Unstoppable Force.......2007-01-09
Excellent book with many challenging statements about the role of believers in the world today.
A light in the darkness.......2006-07-01
It seems, from time to time, God raises up visionaries to nudge the church toward His divine directives. The book of Revelations carries letters to the churches reminding them, correcting them, and showing them that even at that early age the church had the potential to stray a bit from the path we are to follow. And throughout our history, there have been others to bring this message to His bride.
Erwin Mcmanus is one of those messengers. He speaks with clarity on the issues that many of us have been wrestling with for some time. To quote the great theologian Morpheus, "you know something is wrong, like a splinter in your mind". (paraphrased)
As I read this book, I cried aloud many times, "Yes!" when I would read another statement laying bare the topic of the generally handicapped state many of our churches is in. Not in the pointless fashion of criticism but with direct counterpoints to many of the tired and stale positions the church has taken on the topics relating to, in all reality, the foundational reasons the church exists. My wife must have thought me crazy during these outbursts.
If you have forgotten your first love-READ THIS BOOK
If you are walking the "narrow path" and would like a trail map-READ THIS BOOK
If you feel your walk is becoming more of a trudge-READ THIS BOOK
If you are involved in ministry in any way. Pastor, teacher, prophet, elder, greeter, parking lot attendant. I beseech you, PLEASE READ THIS BOOK.
This is not a "here's how to fill up those empty seats in your church" book. What this is, is a picture of the heart of the church, laid bare.
I rarely recommend books to folks because I believe all truth is available in the Holy Bible, and we are pushed constantly to spend our money on an endless train of Christiana. Or to send our money to others so that they can do God's work for us. I have no issue whatsoever with any ministry doing valid Christian work. My point is we are ALL called to do the stuff. As the late John Wimber said, "everybody get's to play".
With that said, I do recommend this book wholeheartedly for anyone desiring to pursue a closer walk with Thee.
it will change the way you look at church.......2006-04-06
Loaded with many fresh, new perspectives on churches and pastoring, McManus brings many forgotten aspects of what the church is to the fore.
My favorite is the "pastor as spiritual environmentalist" where he talks about the work of pastoring being like farming. It's all about the soil around the plant, not actually making the plant grow itself.
Many other great insights in this book. It's great if you're currently out of a church or are rethinking the roles of pastors and churches in the world today.
Spirituality of transformation.......2006-03-15
The author provides an excellent perspective on the radical ministry of Christ and its power to transform the world today. Every church leader who is searching for a way to make change palatable to congregants who desire to be comfortable rather than becoming engaged in outreach and evangelism should read this book. My favorite quotes from the book, "We're singing the same songs we sang 200 years ago, and they weren't that good back then," and "sitting in a pew for 50 years without ever changing their hearts and minds." This is a handbook for the future to revitalize the mission and ministries of all churches.

Customer Reviews:
Watch you words.......2007-08-07
This is the best book I have ever read on how important the words of our mouth are. Charles Capp makes it clear, to the point and backs up what is said with Scripture.
for the saved only-advanced learning.......2007-07-07
There IS power in the Word...spoken. Believers DO have authority given by Christ. Capps is an expert at teaching these truths. Yet, he doesn't teach any other foundational truths of the Bible, which may hinder those without strong "roots". Also, I don't enjoy his writing style, e.g. he changes phonts alot for emphasis(i assume) which I don't get and he is repetitive. I do enjoy listening to him on the radio, and will look for his dvds and cds.
Must Read.......2007-01-19
Fantasic book to learn how to operate the spiritual power available to all who choose to believe God's word. Deliverance and the more than abundant life can be yours. This book is rightly divided biblically and very interesting.
You can create better circumstances for yourself..........2006-09-24
Do you have a health problem? Get this book.
Do you have a family or relationship problem? Get this book.
Do you have a financial problem? Get this book.
In Genesis chapter 1, the tool that God use to create that which He wanted was "words". Guess what, words are exactly the same tool that you have to create that which you want in your life.
Problem is, most people are using words to bring that which they don't want. This book does an excellent job of getting you straitened out and creating that which you do want.
GREAT BOOK!.......2006-02-26
I love his teaching. He puts things down on paper that make it easy to absorb into the heart. YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK!

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

A great text with lots of information in a small package........2007-09-29
This text is perfect for the reader who can read graphs and diagrams. A picture is worth a thousand words and so are graphs and diagrams. This text is chock full of graphs with all the information that you may need for an undergraduate or graduate course. I love this book. Its an excellent reference.
Good book........2007-09-03
Was used for "intermolecular forces" class... Advanced, and I think, it could be useful for people who work with AFM.
Fantastic Book.......2005-07-23
If you want to learn about the title subject, this is a great intro book. And it's probably the most enjoyable theory book you are likely to own, if you purchase it.
Forces you know or not????.......2004-02-13
The above "reviewer" needs to learn the English language! What the hell is that guy trying to tell us? I'm glad the book is useful to the outdoors.
I have not read too far into the book, but it seems to be fairly well written.
Forces you know or not.......2001-03-17
~~~Engineering and Science are different on the point that people are trying to understand the phenomena with little knowledge of the physical background. Especially recently the interdisciplinary stuff are more and more challenging, so that's why engineers must have solid background on science. From my own experience, I do not need to take care the thermodyamics, kinetics in my former major, solid mechanics. Well, it's hard to survive if you only have knowledge on structures of a bridge~~ or a composite plate (this is just my own view, please forgive my ignorance). Nano- and Meso- scale materials are related to some mechanical problems. So I got this book to start my research on this. It is useful not only to experts but also to the outdoors like me.~~~
this book covers everything and is so helpful. it was even fun to read. i loved the little stories that were thrown in there. this is a good book to have around. it really made me feel better about what is going to be happening in the next couple of years in not only his, but my life too. i feel like im ready to handle a lot more now. thanks!!
Loved it!.......2007-08-14
Loved it, perfect for new wives in the military...if you have been doing this for awhile...I would not recommend it, but if you are new to the military it is PERFECT!!
A Valuable Resource.......2007-08-12
I bought MARRIED TO THE MILITARY soon after it came out in 2003. I think this book should be standard issue for every new military spouse. It's one-stop shopping for useful information on helpful agencies, acronyms, and lessons learned. If I'd had this book 18 years ago when I married my Army man, I could've saved myself a lot of mistakes, headaches, and confusion. Do a new military wife a favor and give her this book!
Marna Krajeski, author of Household Baggage: The Moving Life of a Soldier's Wife
By far the best for new to the military.......2007-08-02
I am a prior service military spouse and love this book. I find it a great addition to my library, and recommend it to new spouses and young soldiers. Yes this book was not geared for Army but it does teach you how to read an LES, and gives you definitions to military abbrieviations. It is definitly better than going to an army wife who never served and doesn't understand the full realm of how the army works.
Horrible Resource.......2007-06-13
Ive been a military wife for quite a while and I found the information in this book to be horrifying in some parts. I find it hard to believe that the writer does not attempt to wear her husbands rank especially by saying that a CO's wife should not be friends with a junior enlisted wife. Why the heck not?? Unless of course you are are wearing your husbands rank. If each are nice women with a lot in common, who cares. Secondly, please tell me where you get paid lots of extra money when you get married? If she is talking about the housing allowance when you get married she didn't specify, even then you could live on base and not get any housing allowance, so Ive been a wife for a while now and Ive never seen extra money for being married, I wish she would inform us where to get that money. As I get further into the book I get more and more frustrated. The reason I picked this book up was to see whether or not to recommend it to incoming Marine Corps girlfriends, fiancees, and wives and now I would tell them to stay far far away from this book. Another thing she said was that if you are stationed on the East Coast then its a lot less likely that you will get orders to the Pacific. Sorry girl, the military sends you where they need you, they do not base it whatsoever on where you are now or where you want to go. We've gone from the East coast to Asia to the mid-US as have many many of our friends. I have only made it through the first few chapters and I am not sure if I can stomach the rest. If you were going to write a helpful book you should have done some research and be a lot less gender discriminate. I would never recommend this book
Downside of Islam and Downside of Poverty.......2007-08-08
When I first read and reviewed this book I left only a cryptic notation, "downside of Islam" but I neglected the opportunity to point out that the book also captures the downside of poverty as well as the enormous cultural and emotionial indignities toward women that are sanctioned by Islam and not only practiced in Islamic countries but also exported to Europe and the USA, where women are treated behind closed doors in a manner that would put any normal American behind bars for years.
A must read story about life in Iran.......2007-07-31
Ghazal's book offers a rare and insightful look of Iran, a land that is usually viewed via the political prism of its leadership and rarely from the point of view of its people. The author offers a compelling story of a girl and a young woman living in a land that is best described by the name she chooses for her ontology. And indeed, "Hell" is a difficult word for a homeland. But while reading the tale it becomes apparent that "Hell" is not a description given to the beautiful land of Iran but rather, to the political reality that engulfed the country and, with it, the life of a young girl.
Ghazal begins her story in Abadan, a picturesque city located minutes from the Iraqi border where she grew up as the youngest of eight siblings. As a child, Ghazal experienced the life before the revolution - life of relative freedom in where friendships with Jews were permitted and where reading the bible was not considered an unforgivable sin. These times and her inquisitive personality created a girl that would forfeit her need to reflect upon and question her surroundings) - something that means only trouble in post-revolutionary Iran.
Her story is a personal one of an inquisitive girl who is trying to follow her mind and her heart and that of a country busy with revolution and war that has little room for any form of dissent.
The book recounts the life before the revolution and the events that have led to the rise of Kohmeni. It offers an insider's view of the revolution, the US embassy hostage crisis and the war.
Having studied Islam for 17 years and following a struggle wither own faith, the author knows Islamic law. Her studies, documented in the second portion of the book, address many important questions and misconceptions about Islam. Her research affords some insight into why Muslim countries seem to be prone to terrorism and examines the link between poverty, ignorance and terrorism
Living In Hell is also a book dedicated to the oppression of women. Omid's personal experience s a woman who experienced abuse , is , unfortunately, not unique in countries like Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyz and other Middle East countries where traditional male dominated societies still practice barbaric "honor" killings
Ghazal Omid calls herself "A Rebel With A Cause" because her work have became one deeply associated with the cause of freedom in Iran, with human rights and with the life of many Iranian prisoners for whom Ghazal is one of the only voices of hope. "Living in Hell" was written also for these brave men and woman - since it shows that difficult and even impossible journey of struggle can end with freedom and hope.
Nir Boms is the Vice President of the Center for Freedom in the Middle East
A Powerfully personal account.......2007-06-25
Living in Hell is a powerful window into the daily struggles of women in Iran. It is filled with heart wrenching personal accounts of Ghazal's struggle against the oppressive nature of Iran's Islamic government and male dominated society. Anyone who desires to gain insight into the struggles faced by women in Islamic dictatorships should get this book, you wont regret it.
Truth Seekers Only.......2007-05-18
If you are a truth seeker, then this book will change your life forever. Ms. Omid has touched the very depths of my soul by her honest account and for sharing her experience, strength, and hope. I urge everyone to read her book! The subject matter is difficult to read if you have a conscience and are concerned about women and men in Iran. She may not be an expert on every act of abuse that happens around the world, but she does know first hand the type of abuse that goes on in the country she grew up in. I can not understand where the feminists and human rights activists are when it comes to the abuse women endure in Iran. Where are they? I can only deduce that those who ridicule such an honest account are the same types of people who thought Hitler was "good" for Germany. They turn their heads and dismiss the reality while unimaginiable atrocieties occur daily, especially if privilege and power are in their favor. Ms. Omid never accepts "status quo" and is not silenced by those who would consider themselves superior because they have different genitals. Her book is a reminder that one empathetic person in one's life can and does make a difference for the better. We can say "NO!" Most amazing is the way in which Ms. Omid puts her literal life on the line daily to speak up for those who have no voice. Her unconditional love for the people of Iran and her beloved country is indescribable. Because of Ms. Omid's book, I am extremely encouraged that the people of Iran can and do have the ability to stand up and stop the madness that their horrific, dispicable, murderous government is thrusting upon them. They need a little help from the rest of the world. Those who truly care are "the rest of the world!" Ms. Omid and her book is a gift to humanity. I recommend this book to everyone!!!! May her valiant spirit touch your heart too!
A Heartrending, Truthful, and Inspiring Autobiography.......2007-04-16
Ghazal Omid is one of humanity's treasures. She faced crushing poverty in her childhood in Iran, even with a father who usually was flush with cash but found little of it to spend on his own family. She was abused, mistreated, ignored, and utilized by family members only for what she could be bullied into giving up.
Standing up to the Revolutionary government in Iran in her daily life, her obstinate refusal to parrot the dictates of the Mullahs ended up with her receiving the tender mention of her name by Ayatollah Khemeni at Friday prayers as an "American patriot", tantamount to a death sentence by the nation's highest-ranking cleric, and plenty of the mindless myrmidons of the Revolution were inspired by the Ayatollah's words to carry it out.
Fleeing her home nation and making it eventually to Canada, Ghazal struggled with newfound difficulties of a woman raised in a controlling culture, suddenly faced with the open society of Canada, and initially had great difficulties coming to terms with her new life.
The abuse from her two horrible brothers in Canada, now devolved into the spychological abuse of a patriarchial culture in which women are regarded as burdens and not gifts to humanity, continued as Ghazal did her level best to rise above a lifetime of hideous maltreatment by the very men in her life who should have been standing up for her, protecting her, and helping her establish herself as an independent spirit in a unkind world.
Even in the face of this tremendously sad background, Ghazal decided to devote her life to help the people left behind in Iran, and to this day does everything she can do to help Iranian people, political prisoners, and resistance groups, overcome the death grip the Mullahs have on the people of her home nation.
She is an immensely strong, brilliant, and eloquent woman, and a role model of strength and determination that any woman would find inspiring.
This is a book that any woman in the West should read, to further understand the shackles hammered around the necks of women in Muslim countries, and more deeply appreciate the societies into which Western women have had the fortune to be born.
Those who have assailed this book in above commentaries completely missed the point of the book. This is no whine-fest, it is a sincere confession of a woman who seeks to make other human beings stronger by helping them realize the struggles that billions of women living in subjugation face on a daily basis.
My own life has been enriched by reading Ghazal's story, and anyone who reads her book with an open mind cannot help but come away with a different understanding of Iranian culture, and Islam in its true form, not the perverted politicized Wahabbist/Jihadist delusion that somehow a God out there is reveling in the deaths, or the sufferings, of innocents.
Book Description
A groundbreaking work of science that confirms, for the first time, the independent existence of the mind–and demonstrates the possibilities for human control over the workings of the brain.
Conventional science has long held the position that 'the mind' is merely an illusion, a side effect of electrochemical activity in the physical brain. Now in paperback, Dr Jeffrey Schwartz and Sharon Begley's groundbreaking work, The Mind and the Brain, argues exactly the opposite: that the mind has a life of its own.Dr Schwartz, a leading researcher in brain dysfunctions, and Wall Street Journal science columnist Sharon Begley demonstrate that the human mind is an independent entity that can shape and control the functioning of the physical brain. Their work has its basis in our emerging understanding of adult neuroplasticity–the brain's ability to be rewired not just in childhood, but throughout life, a trait only recently established by neuroscientists.
Through decades of work treating patients with obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), Schwartz made an extraordinary finding: while following the therapy he developed, his patients were effecting significant and lasting changes in their own neural pathways. It was a scientific first: by actively focusing their attention away from negative behaviors and toward more positive ones, Schwartz's patients were using their minds to reshape their brains–and discovering a thrilling new dimension to the concept of neuroplasticity.
The Mind and the Brain follows Schwartz as he investigates this newly discovered power, which he calls self–directed neuroplasticity or, more simply, mental force. It describes his work with noted physicist Henry Stapp and connects the concept of 'mental force' with the ancient practice of mindfulness in Buddhist tradition. And it points to potential new applications that could transform the treatment of almost every variety of neurological dysfunction, from dyslexia to stroke–and could lead to new strategies to help us harness our mental powers. Yet as wondrous as these implications are, perhaps even more important is the philosophical dimension of Schwartz's work. For the existence of mental force offers convincing scientific evidence of human free will, and thus of man's inherent capacity for moral choice.
The Mind and how it affects the Brain.......2007-09-09
Excellent reading portraying how the mind can affect the physical brain. This can be achieved through conscious efforts of volitional attention resulting in mental forces that alters the material brain utilizing the concepts of quantum physics. The author uses several documented examples of successful uses of techniques utilizing these concepts especially with patients suffering from obsessive compulsive behavior.
great psychology book.......2007-08-16
this book is great in terms of psychology- full background on studies that support the authors point of view, can read as repetitive, but then again, isn't repetition key for retention?
the book isn't as bad as the negative reviews have it, nor as miraculous as the positive reviews do. it's great for the psychology of learning and neuroplasticity...
however, as for it's metaphysical content, post introductory run-down of the various viewpoints of philosophy of the mind (materialism, epiphenomenolism, etc.) in the beginning, the rest of the book is mysteriously void of the corresponding qualia debates (although i suppose the author is an M.D., not a Phil. Ph.D.). but if he would like to claim that mind is something other than matter, it would be nice to touch on this (especially concerning causal efficacy of non-material mind). i'll agree with other reader/reviewers that invoking quantum mechanics has become somewhat fashionable, but those parts were interesting reading, even if it didn't seem clear how he meant to invoke immaterial mind into the equation.
at least it makes you think about all these issues- to the negative reviews, no one book should be your single source anyway- schwartz has a captivating theory, which (just like anyone else's) should be taken with a grain of salt, open to interpretation and evolution...
Where Neuroscience Came From.......2007-06-26
On the plus side, I loved reading about the experiments and gaining an understanding about what the results mean and how that works with neuroplasticity. I believe that the brain can be changed with "exercise" and that's what made me pick-up this book.
But I personally was hoodwinked by the whole "the mind is not of this world" thing. It seemed to me, an admitted novice, but not a complete dolt, that Dr. Schwartz should have been up-front with counter arguments. I think it was nearly 100 pages into the book before he mentioned that it could be that one part of the brain was changing another. We do have a "reptile brain" with a more modern brain added later...I could see where one part could teach the other part something! I wouldn't expect him to argue forcefully for the other camp, but I recognized (with some other readings) that the other position was distorted to improve his (rather weak) argument.
Something the other reviews didn't mention was that this was a bit of a biography for Schwartz. He tells us when, where, who, what they talked about. It's also a bit of a history lesson; sometimes I'd be excited about a topic, only to find out the experiment was in the 1800's (and there's no fMRI results).
I'm in the camp with some of the other reviewers that got tired of the repetition. If the repetition was eliminated, the folksy "I was with 'Mr. Cool' on this day" was eliminated, and especially the drumbeat of how the mind exists outside of reality, you'd have a much more readable and interesting book.
The physical brain can be "all there is" and still operate upon itself! Nothing in this book convinced me otherwise.
What I've Known All Along.......2007-05-31
As an educator with a PhD in Human Development, I have always known on an intuitive, if not learned level, that the human brain has the potential to be ever-changing and ever-developing, even into old age or following trauma, such as a stroke. Perhaps more importantly, Schwartz has reinforced my belief that the free will of individual human beings has the power to shape thoughts, which in turn create neuro-pathways, allowing us (compelling us?)to literally 'grow our brains' as we (can) choose to learn new skills, behaviors, and attitudes; our free will can further be utilized to replace maladaptive thought patterns and behaviors with those that can give us a better quality of life, such as with OCD, or depression. I particularly appreciated Schwartz's discussion of the morality of free will. Combined with the brain's neuro-plastic nature, free will creates the power to shape the choices we make via the thought patterns that we can choose over others. This, he proposes, is what gives humans their spirituality, separate from animals, and I am certain that he is correct; free will, along with will-power, to think moral thoughts and choose moral actions, are not emphasized enough in our mechanistic culture of passive recipients who have been taught and have bought the notion that, 'I am who I am, I can't change, I have to be true to myself' and so on..all well and good if one has a high,altruistic moral code, not so good if one does not. Finally, as an educator, I found Schwartz's insight into learning new behavior(s), sometimes requiring the unlearning of old behavior pattern(s), and then requring discrete steps and repetitive action, very applicable to today's classroom. The education of young children, especially with learning difficulties, who need this type of learnimg/training the most, has instead given way to the easy route, 'do fewer problems', 'if it's too hard, you don't have to do it'; 'don't worry, we'll pass you' are phrases reflective of how education has been watered down rather than changed to meet the needs of students who need more training, more practice, more skill development, if they are to create the neuro-pathway needed for academic skills to become second-nature.
The Mind and the Brain.......2007-04-10
Excellent book for those needing insight into Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Material presented in a clear fashion with substantial evidence.
very infomative for newcomers to live food.......2007-09-26
Love this book. Easy reading, very informative and gives introduction information for transitioning to raw food. Very good book.
Feed Your Mind.......2007-07-31
This was the first book written by Natalia Rose that I have read. And, I thoroughly enjoyed it. But, be forewarned, this is more thought provoking than the usual food book. Some will find the author's discussion of the vibrational frequencies of foods to be anything from bizarre to unsupported (adequately) scientifically. I found the discussion though provoking, recognizing yet again how little we really do understand about the full impact of food on our body and mind.
Here is the context of why I enjoyed this book so much. I am a huge believer in the impact of what we eat on our physical and mental health. As such, I enjoy reading books that build my knowledge as to what exactly are the optimal foods and combinations of foods. Although I believe that the fundamentals of good nutrition are well understood, I believe that there is much that still is not understood. Hence, my enjoyment of reading on the subject, especially books that feed my mind by stretching my thinking.
I have no idea as to whether Rose is right that vibrational frequency is the key. I am at least open to it being one of the keys. I personally believe that micronutrients are another important key and I was surprised at the dearth of treatment of what many scientists believe to be an important element of food. (This is the major reason I gave the book a four star ranking rather than a five).
Read this book along with Eat Right, Live Longer (Barnard) and Super Foods (Pratt and Mathews) and you will have a plethora of good information from which to build your own philosophy as to optimal food for YOU.
Of course, the underlying message of every one of these optimal food books is the same: we need to choose carefully what we eat. To do so, I - for one - believe I must be better informed about the latest thinking on the subject. I am grateful to the author for advancing my thinking and doing so with her easy to read and to comprehend style of writing.
Finally...a raw food lifestyle I can live with!!.......2007-07-25
I have to say how happy I am with this book. Natalia Rose spells everything out in this book. I would suggest also picking up her "Raw Food Detox Diet" as well (if you haven't already). For a really picky eater (like me), the recipes are easy to incorporate into my daily life. Both of these books will be a part of my life for many years to come.
I highly recommend!!
Good book.......2007-06-23
I highly recommend this excellent book. Natalia is the real deal. My only issue with this book is the issue I have with most of the raw diet books on the market-you have to have time to prepare food daily-at least 45 minutes to an hour. This is why I didn't give it 5 stars. As someone who would LOVE to eat an 80-90% raw diet and eat healthily ALL of the time, but who works upwards of 50 hours/week, diets like this are barely do-able. Basically, I would like to see Natalia consider the busy schedules of her constituents, and figure out a way where folks are able to prepare most of their week's meals on one weekend day. Am I alone in this? I have found one book that does this; it's Alissa Cohen's raw food diet book, which I also recommend. However, I like Natalia's recipes better because they don't rely on heavy nut recipes like Alissa's. Anyway, this book is absolutely worth the money. I like the recipes better than the first one, too. I just wish she would make it more do-able for those with very busy schedules.
The first N. Rose book was better!.......2007-05-09
This book is a little more complicated than Natalia Rose's first book "Raw food detox diet". This book includes frequency ranges for different foods and that's too complicated for me. Other than that all the information is the same as in her first book. I think it's not necessary to own both N. Rose books and if to choose one of them, then I would rather recommend the first one!
Changed my life!.......2007-07-28
These audio cd's are fantastic. I listen to them in the car and find myself wishing for traffic (so the ride lasts longer). I definately look at my health differently. It has really inspired me to take control of my families health and nutrition.
Excellent!.......2007-03-09
I thoroughly enjoyed the first round of listening to this very informative and educational lecture series and I'm still learning more every time I repeat the series. It is a wealth of information and Dr. Hyman spells things out in both medical and layman terms, providing plenty of real life examples to give the information perspective. This is a series that anyone with an open mind and desire to improve their health will benefit from.
Everything but the kitchen sink on Nutrition!.......2007-02-12
I can't get enough of Dr. Hyman. I loved Ultraprevention, Ultrametabolism and now the Five Forces of Wellness. I tried the elimination diet he recommends and feel fantastic.
I dicovered I have a problem with digesting gluten. I feel so much better after elminating gluten from my diet. My kids are now gluten-free and are doing better in so many ways. I believe gluten should not be allowed in our food supply.
After listening to Dr. Hyman, I discovered my Thyroid levels were actually undesirable. The lab was using old information so my physician assumed my thyroid was fine. The ideal range for your TSH is between 1 & 2. Celiac Disease ( a gluten intolerance) can lead to thyroid problems. If I had eliminated gluten sooner, I probably wouldn't have a thyroid problem now.
Amazing!.......2007-01-06
Thank you...Thank you...Thank you! I had my suspicions about what was going on with my body...now I know. And better, I know how to fix it. Dr. Hyman, you rock!
