5 out of 5 stars The Return of Mokona.......2006-01-08

In the second cycle of the MKR series Mokona returns...mwahahahahaha!!!! Puuuu?
If you haven't yet finished the first series, try not to read the reviews as they will give away some surprises from the first series.

To get down to the first book in the series. It's excellent; even better than the first arc. There is less fun and jokes and more serious, thoughtful moments. Hikaru, Umi and Fuu have been summoned once again to Cephiro-but this time no knows who summoned them! Enemies are invading Cephiro, and they want to take it over and become it's pillar. Eagle Vision, Lady Aska and the twins, Tarta and Tatra all have their eyes on Cephiro, the land where will controls everything. In this series, the artwork is better and so is the story. The characters have more depth, and there are lots of flashbacks, so Princess Emeraude still plays a large roll in the story, and appears every few pages (which is good because I really love her; she's so cute). Umi and Hikaru both meet potential love interests-really surprising ones, in fact and we re-meet all the characters from the last series, even the bad guys-who are good now. =^-^= We get to see a lot of Clef, who is so cute (and since he and Presea are the only ones without any love interest, I think they should hook up; they'd look cute together, but Clef would have to grow a few feet) and a strange new character Lantis, and his obsessed fairy. You even get to see Hikaru with her hair down and not in a braid!!! (And if that doesn't get you to buy the book...)

As usual, the translation, quality and artwork were great, with only one problem; the sound effects were not translated. In the first series, the sound effects (which are part of the drawings themselves) were covered with big, bold fonts, or regular, depending on the size and shape; sometimes there was a small translation on the side of the big symbols. However, this time around, nothing was translated, and though it's not a big deal, it seems sort of lazy to me. However, I have learned Katakana and Hiragana to some extent and got a translation guide to sound effects from the net, but evenso...sigh

And, of course, Mokona returned!! And she almost gets eaten by Umi after her appearance, poor marshmallow. She also talks in her sleep...whatever. This series rocks, and you also get to see the girls family; Umi's parents, Fuu's sister and Hikaru's three cute, overprotective brothers. =^-^=
Buy it now!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully done, a must-have for ANY MKR fan!.......2004-12-12

I love this artbook. The colors are bright, the pictures are huge and the 'Making of the Rayearth manga' bit at the end was really interesting, which answered my "how did they DO that?" question quite well. Color manga pictures are somewhat rare, but both CLAMP and Tokyopop once again outdo themselves in this artbook. I hear the second one is just as good--and I can't WAIT to get my hands on it.

~The Colors~
Bright, lush, vibrant and very noticeable...makes me wish I was a MKR character! VERY pretty! Although, one thing that confuses me is the fact that in the B AND W manga,Hikaru's hair is shaded with a thick solid, which usually means black or dark-colored hair. In the artbook, Hikaru's hair is a pale pink that looks like cotton candy. Why's that? Also, Princess Emeruade's eyes are green and not blue, like Lady Aska mentions in the 2nd half to the MKR manga and I quote:"Cephiro's last princess had long golden hair and blue eyes...they say she was a darling monarch." Ah, well. Princess Emeruade is my fave non-knight character and I've seen her with blue eyes in the anime (i also own 2 anime DVDs of MKR) so it really doesn't bother me.

~The Drawings~
Ah, the drawings. CLAMP's art is absolutely stunning. No exceptions here, either. The lines used are thick and smooth without being overly done. The layouts and backgrounds used in the drawings are breath-taking. Mind-blowing. I like to use this for reference to my own drawings and get ideas.

~Overall~
Don't listen to what other people have to say about this book being poorly done. It's incredible. Take my word for it. Buy this book to give anyone who loves CLAMP or MKR a real treat! I highly recommend it! Buy it now!!!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Awesome Anime.......2004-04-14

I really like the way this anime art book is done. But some of the best pictures I've seen that was done aren't in here. I also like the original much better than this new modeled one.

2 out of 5 stars Poor quality compared to original.......2003-10-22

While I applaud Tokyopop for offering an American edition illustration collection, the quality is very poor when compared to the original Japanese edition. The illustrations are blurry and the reproduced B&W illustrations in the comments and how to section look like low quality photocopies. The paper used is also very poor, similar to magazine quality.

I could only recommend this book is you can't find the original out of print version, which is fairly easy to find used on auction sites and used Japanese used bookstores.

3 out of 5 stars Decent artbook, but not the original.......2003-06-14

I was happy to discover that artbooks were being adapted by American companies, for much cheaper than the Japanese ones! This artbook has the same pretty pictures of the Japanese: beautiful color of Hikaru, Umi, Fuu and friends as well as some notes towards the end.

However, compared to a japanese artbook, the pages are thicker and it looks more like a completed coloring book than a true artbook. However, this costs about half the price of what I've seen the original book for. Therefore, buying this is not a bad idea ---same pictures, lower quality, lower price---but still definitely worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Lush art, big pics.......2003-01-12

Pics are a beauty and there are even some "how we did it" drawing tips at the end. Color color color!

5 out of 5 stars CLAMP outdoes themselves again..........2003-04-15

This book is just as much of an earth-shaker as the third book--maybe even more so. The ending is tearfully joyous, and entirely satisfactory. I have yet to meet a series with an ending that can top either of the ones in Magic Knight Rayearth. It is sad to think that this is the last book in the series!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!! :O.......2003-01-29

Clamp's work is amazing, a truely masterful piece!! Once again I have been amazed by their effort. The details are endless, and all the characters are devolped REALLY well. Artists like Clamp prove to the many uncertain that there are just some emotions that expressed SOOO well with just one picture. With a story that keeps you guessing, and the ever cute Monoka, this book(as well as the rest of the series) is SO worth the money!! Same goes for ANY Clamp books.

5 out of 5 stars Magic Knight Rayearth...the magic of classic manga.......2002-11-06

The 6th and final book in the Magic Knight Rayearth series is truly the most touching, and beautiful! It concludes the series with a nice closing, leaving you breathless with the rush of events that happened before the end. I'm kind of disappointed that number 6 is all, but it was a good ending. Maybe CLAMP will countinue this fabulous series in the future, or find someone that might want to! Truly a lovely series, and a wonderful addition to any CLAMP fan's collection!

5 out of 5 stars The end for Cephiro... or is it?.......2002-06-09

Magic Knight Rayearth #6 is the final volume of CLAMP's first, amazing manga serial. Hikaru lies unconscious after entering a road from another country, after her and her friends were fighting off the oncoming countries. Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu fear that the end of this world which they love so much is coming, as the other countries approach. Do the lords of Chizeta, Fahren and Autozam know the secret that lies behind being the Pillar? They soon learn that they must give all of themselves in order to take Cephiro. Eagle of Autozam seems to be hiding a secret in his heart. Who is willing to give all, and never be able to love another? The Pillar lives as a sacrifice for Cephiro. As the citizens of Cephiro with strong hearts continue their search for the Road to the Pillar (for different reasons) Hikaru knows that she desparately wants to save this country. Where the belief in your heart is power. The final battle begins. You can't miss this manga, although you should read 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 before this. It is absolutely amazing; characterization, unforgettable story, and beautiful CLAMP art make #6 of Rayearth a must-buy manga.

5 out of 5 stars I own it, and I love it.......2002-04-21

I think that Magic knight Rayearth is one of CLAMPs best works ever. If you loved Cardcaptors than you'll definently love this book. I own it and I have read the book a million times, each time you read it, you love it even more! IT's really that good! To see what I mean, buy it and read it yourself!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Much better story, great box (cheap too!) .......2005-03-27

I found that the second Magic Knight Rayearth had a lot more depth and development than the first one. MKR1 had very little character development and lots of action, and it was only in the end that it didn't seem to follow a basic good vs. evil plot. In the second one the (former) magic knights gather at the Tokyo tower for a reunion and fall back into Cephiro. Odd thing is, no one knows who summoned them this time around- but it's good that they showed anyway. After they returned to Tokyo, the magic knights left Cephiro pillar-less, and when they return a year later a new one still hasn't been found. As a result, the once magnificent country has become a sea of turbulent rock that is slowly crumbling away. The greatest mages in Cephiro have built a fortress haven for their people, but it will only hold for so long. To make matters worse, three hostile countries are encroaching upon Cephiro, with leaders intent on becoming it's pillar. These are Fahren, a mystic land ruled by a childlike empress who would turn Cephiro into a candy land for her amusement, Chizeta, a small Arabian style desert pardise ruled by twins who hope to expand their small country's borders for their parents, and Autozam, a highly technological civilization that wants to figure out how Cephiro is so unpolluted as their own planet slowly dies from it's pollution. Through it all theres a lot more discourse between characters which reveal more about them, and some flashback scenes from before when the magic knights arrived. Don't worry, there's still plenty of slam-bang action on the part of the mechs (Selece,Windom and Rayearth), but theres also a lot more thought about Cephiro's pillar system. Is it right to find a pillar when they would have to give up everything, and is a land truly beautiful when the only way to save it is sacrifice? Multiple characters propose the idea that maybe Cephiro shouldn't be saved, and that it's awful system should die with it.......

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful box, cute bonus! =^-^=.......2005-02-09

The boxed set is great! The box is beautiful, (and has a picture of Eagle Vision on it which is enough to make anything look good)and the bonus booklet has really cute pictures, but don't read it until you finish the series or it'll ruin some of the story. It is supposed to be a paper doll, and collector cards booklet, but you have to cut out everything with a pair of scissors as there is no indentation to help you cut it out. I didn't bother cuz they're good enough just to look at, like any CLAMP work. The box is nice and sturdy, and the only thing I don't like is the cover artwork on the books. Instead of cool pictures of the girls, there are just the pictures of the Mashin, meccha form.
Another thing that's interesting is that there are lot's of pictures of the Magic Knights in cool outfits, with neat armor. But they never get that stuff in the manga. Also, in this series, their armor and swords don't evolve again. Too bad. However, in the special CLAMP chapter at the end of the book, you get to learn about their pet cat that always gets in their way and causes them lots of trouble. But she's sooo cute!

The second series of the MKR manga is set a year after the first series ended, making it a total of six books in all! (If only there were twenty instead, sigh....) Hikaru, Umi and Fuu have returned to Cephiro, but no one knows who summoned them! But it's agood thing they came cuz, once again, Cephiro is in danger!

5 out of 5 stars ~MKR~ best manga ever! CLAMP has outdone themselves!.......2004-12-12

I love MKR! It's my favorite manga series ever and I can never put it down! I bought this 2nd box-set with my own b-day money and it was worth every dollar. The 2nd half is not as happily portrayed as the first, and therefore the characters and setting become more serious and gloomy, but don't listen to what others say about this half not being as good as the first. The action scenes are just power-packed as those of the 1st 3 books, and Umi learns a new spell while the girls get old weapons and new guards. They also see old friends and new enemies who have come to battle for the take-over of Cephiro in its eternity! It's a must-have set for anybody who wants anything and eveything that has to do with MKR or CLAMP, like me! However, even though the backs of the books say 'Youth - 10+', I wouldn't recommend this series for anyone under 13 becuase of bloody violence and nudity. (I'm 15, so I can say this without getting hollered at,right?)

    4 out of 5 stars neato.......2004-11-21

magic knight rayearth was the first anime i ever saw and one of my favorite. the story from the book was very different from the tv series (i like the tv series better than the book). they made a lot of changes on the story --- probably because they have to put it all in three books. i just hope they didn't alter lots of parts of the story. nevertheless, it was good.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! A must get for any Rayearth fan!.......2003-07-24

I love this series. It is more serious than the last (yes even Umi). But it is filled with a rich story full of its own funny moments. This is a MUST HAVE for people who have read the first series. Other good series by clamp are Wish and Angelic Layer. If your a CLAMP fan or even a Manga fan you must get the Rayearth Series!

3 out of 5 stars Out of Print!? Why?!.......2005-02-09

First let me say how much I love the magic knight rayearth series. I got all six volumes; the three from the first series and the boxed set of the second series. So why is this one out of print? Why do you have to buy all three volumes separately? There¡¦s still a big market for MKR, and all of CLAMP¡¦s manga, so why did they make the boxed set of limited availability? I really wanted to buy it, and get the extra booklet. I wish they would bring it back again, because I almost wasn¡¦t able to get the series because it¡¦s too expensive getting all the books separately; I ended up buying everything off of ebay. Almost every series has a boxed set, so what¡¦s the deal with this one?

5 out of 5 stars From the creators of Sakura Cardcaptors and X/1999........2003-01-06

Clamp, an all female company certainly knows what its doing. Rayearth is a great manga with a very unexpected ending. It was the work that made the Clamp girls famous. The story involves 3 girls that get sucked into a world where magic is the factor that determines strenght, and depends on the will of one person to keep the world safe. But is that person's will strong enough to keep the magic world of Cephiro safe?... The artwork is great, however not up to par with X/1999. I heard the second part is even better than the first, can't wait for it to come out. If you like this manga and wanna see more get the TV series or the OVAs. You also get an extra color artbook with this set by the way. Buy it now.

Ahh CLAMP and their wonderful works. This is no different. This story revolves around 3 "normal" girls named Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu. One day, they were abducted into a mysterious land called Cephiro. They find out that they were brought here by the princess of Cephiro who's in deep trouble. The princess had been kidnapped by Zagato (the big bad guy) and now Cephiro is in chaos. Monsters are appearing in Cephiro where they didn't belong before. Basically, Cephiro is in shambles. Now it's up to the legendary Magic Knights to save Cephiro! The story itself is kind of like an RPG with magical girls.

    **THE ARTWORK**
The artwork is unflipped and the quality is just as good. In the previous volumes of Magic Knight Rayearth, the artwork was flipped and now it's done the "right way". CLAMP's artwork has always been known to be very detailed and sport a neo-baroque style just like X/1999. These women are very talented and their stories are always great.

    **THE BOXSET**
This boxset includes a special memorial book which is a nicely added bonus. It has some info on the characters along with the weapons used. This book also includes some info on the geography of Cephiro. The first half of book is colored and has a mini "bonus section" with the 3 girls in it. Anyway, the second boxset is rumored to be released March/April 2003 so I'll glady get that when it comes out.

    **COMPLAINTS**
The only complaint I have with the boxset is that, the box itself is flimsy. It bends easily so when I ordered mine from Amazon.com, it was kind of squished.
