5 out of 5 stars It works!.......2007-09-18

We bought this book for my daughter when she was 13 months old. We read it frequently to her but never knew if she really understood what the whole "new baby at our house" concept really meant. The day day her baby sister was born when she was 18 months old we read the book to her and on the page that says "someone new is at our house, do you know who it is?" she immediately pointed to her new sister. We were so excited to realize that this book had taught her the concept of being a big sister even though she was so young. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars I like it!.......2007-08-23

When my son was born, he gave this book to my toddler. It really doesn't hold her interest but I think it is a worth while book! I love the illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-08-23

Out of all the big sister books I bought for my daughter when we were expecting #2, this one I think is her favorite. Great illustrations and explanations on a child level. Great book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for "Big Sisters" !!!!.......2007-08-07

This book is so wonderful! We started reading this book to our 2 year old at about 1 month before the baby was born! She LOVED the book and after reading this book she would carry it around the house. She kept on commenting that she was going to have a baby. When baby finally came, she was so excited to tell her that she was the "big sister"!
The baby is now 15 months old and my now 3 year old still loves to read the book and actively particippates and helps Mommy with the baby because she's a "big sister"!
The book talks about something new in our house, a baby. The baby in the book seems to be gender neutral which makes it convenient if you're expecting either a new girl or new boy. There are also some helpful tips for parents on the final page of the book. We highly recommend this book which is an easy read for your toddler.

5 out of 5 stars I'm a Big Sister.......2007-04-05

Good Book. It is wonderful at introducing the concept of a new baby being in the house to a sibling. But this book also emphasizes that the sibling is still special to the parents and it is good to be an older sibling.

Book Description

What is the purpose of education? What kind of people do we want our children to grow up to be? How can we design schools so that students will acquire the skills they'll need to live fulfilled and productive lives?

These are just a few of the questions that renowned educator Dennis Littky explores in The Big Picture: Education Is Everyone's Business. The schools Littky has created and led over the past 35 years are models for reformers everywhere: small, public schools where the curriculum is rich and meaningful, expectations are high, student progress is measured against real-world standards, and families and communities are actively engaged in the educational process.

This book is for both big "E" and small "e" educators:
* For principals and district administrators who want to change the way schools are run.
* For teachers who want students to learn passionately.
* For college admissions officers who want diverse applicants with real-world learning experiences.
* For business leaders who want a motivated and talented workforce.
* For parents who want their children to be prepared for college and for life.
* For students who want to take control over their learning . . . and want a school that is interesting, safe, respectful, and fun.
* For anyone who cares about kids.

Here, you'll find a moving account of just what is possible in education, with many of the examples drawn from the Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center ("The Met") in Providence, Rhode Island--a diverse public high school with the highest rates of attendance and college acceptance in the state and a dropout rate of less than five percent. The Met exemplifies personalized learning, one student at a time.

The Big Picture is a book to re-energize educators, inspire teachers in training, and start a new conversation about kids and schools, what we want for both, and how to make it happen.

4 out of 5 stars Unique Perspective.......2007-09-12

This book provides a VERY unique perspective to education! I've been involved with high school youth leadership conferences and programs for 2.5 years incorporating brain-based learning, multiple intelligences, etc. I am blown away by the growth seen in students in just a couple days. Yet I am perplexed by the wasted opportunities in the time spent in the classroom. If students can grow so much in a couple days, imagine what could be done in years in the school system. Although an exact relica of Big Picture is not completely possible in the public school setting, many of the concepts could easily be adapted. This is a MUST READ for educators, teacher educators, parents, and even students!!!

5 out of 5 stars A challenge to American schools, a model that works.......2005-09-20

Littky's book challenges the traditional philosophy and practices of American schools. And we deserve that challenge. We are raising kids in dysfunctional schools, dysfunctional even when we believe they are working satisfactorily. At the most fundamental level the philosophy upon which the schools are based, a philosophy laid down in the Nineteenth Century designed to train people to fulfill the needs of industry, has not changed. The problem is that training is not educating. Defining the success of schools by standard tests, the method used to upgrade the dysfunctional system by No Child Left Behind only serves to make the dysfunctional system worse. America's children need a better system.

Littky, after thirty or more years of work in public schools as a principal has turned the old philosophy out the door. His objective is to lead children to love learning and that leads to radically different kinds of schools. In his schools parents are closely involved with the work in every way. Students and teachers work in small groups focusing on projects that cultivate the interests and the skills of the students. School bells do not ring interrupting the process of learning. Students open themselves to the learning process, develop confidence and the needed basic skills of writing and mathematics in the process of doing the projects that fascinate them. Learning becomes joyful. Teachers then become not loaders of information but leaders, fellow learners, who help the child develop the information necessary to the learning process. And, yes, to do this schools must be smaller than we have come to make them in the last fifty years. Huge consolidated, impersonal schools have failed. Littky demonstrates how much more effective small schools are at every level.

The results speak for themselves. Over ninety percent of the children who leave Littky's schools go on to higher education and most of those students when they come into his schools are children who have failed to flourish in traditional schools. For this and a dozen other reasons, Littky's challenge to American education is a powerful book that must not be ignored. Besides, it's a good read. The man speaks to us and we hear his passion for learning. He is his own model for the philosophy and the practice he would inculcate in his students, their parents, his teachers, and us.

American education needs a model that works. Littky offers us that model

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

My children, Josh and Amy, loved this book. Congratulations on finding this.

5 out of 5 stars Must have! .......2006-03-21

My mother used to read it to me and now I am reading it to my daugther (she's 2 1/2). It is a family favorite. The story is beautiful, touching, sweet, etc. I love the language/word choice used by the author. I could read it to my daughter every day and not get tired of it. And, the illustrations are exquisite. They are so detailed and beautiful. If you do not own this book, go and buy it. It's worth every penny. You will not be disappointed. They don't make them like this anymore! This is a classic.

4 out of 5 stars My son loves it as much as I did.......2006-02-22

This was one of my favorite books growing up. We got it for my 3 year-old son, and he loves it as much as I do. The question of, "What is inside the egg?" is exciting, even though he now knows the answer. We have fun coming up with new possibilities, though.

Bottom line: this is a great, fun book for a toddler. I highly recommend it. It also is useful for parents trying to encourage a child's imagination.

5 out of 5 stars A true picturebook classic.......2004-07-09

Charmingly written by Margaret Wise Brown and superbly illustrated by Leonard Weisgard, The Gold Egg Book is a true picturebook classic telling the story of the rambling imagination of one little bunny as he tries to figure out just what is inside a beautiful blue egg. A whole new generation of children ages 2 to 5 will delight in this lively story as the bunny tries to shake, push, and even jump on the egg in his attempts to break it. But the egg won't hatch until it is ready! The Golden Egg Book will prove to be an enthusiastically popular addition to family, preschool, and community library collections.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-09-16

This book is such a sweet, cute book. I am 24 years old and still read it to my nieces every once in a while. I have grown up making my parents read me this book over and over again every night and day. My copy is worn out but it also shows how much I enjoyed it. I hope you decide to buy it and read it to your children they will love it!

5 out of 5 stars What a great, sweet book!.......2006-09-09

This is such a sweet little book! Probably not much past age 5, but the story has a bunny looking for a place to stay or a home of his own. He proceeds to ask everyone he meets if he can live with them and they all say no. However, when he meets a little white bunny, the bunny takes him in and they then live together. The last picture is just so sweet with the two bunnies snuggling together. The illustrations make you touch the page because the bunny looks so fuzzy! It is very much loved in our house and we highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars home for a bunny review.......2006-03-30

I read this book 20+ years ago to my two children and it was their favorite and most requested Little Golden book. It is such a sweet and well illustrated book. My only regret is that I didn't keep it over the years because I now had to go on a search for another copy for my brand new grandchild. My new copy of "Home for a Bunny" will be extremely well used, I'm sure!

5 out of 5 stars Touching & Memorable.......2005-05-22

My mother used to read this book to me when I was very small, and even twenty years later, I remember the story of the little bunny trying to find a home so vividly! This is such a sweet story, it ends happily, and it has beautiful illustrations as well. A wonderful exploration of the concept of "home." I'm looking forward to reading it to my own children one day.

5 out of 5 stars Life-long favorite.......2005-04-19

My papa used to read this to me when I was a child, and then I apparently grew out of it for a while. I remember coming home from high school during finals week, exhausted. Dad saw me sigh and said, "Well, you're home for a bunny. You can relax now." Memories flooded me and we scrambled to find the book. Now, I've made it a tradition that when a family member or friend is expecting their first child, I give them a copy of this book. It's all about a little bunny(baby)coming home, isn't it? And when I was looking to buy my own first home...well, that's another story.

The writing is sweet and the illustrations charming. Highly recommended. It's a keeper, for sure.

Book Description

No child is too young to begin learning about the greatest love story of all—God’s love for his people, as portrayed in the Bible. David R. Helm and Gail Schoonmaker collaborate to create a beautifully illustrated book of Bible stories especially for children, written with simplicity. Rather than simply retelling the most familiar short scenes from the Bible, this book presents the “big picture”—the unified story running through the Old and New Testaments. This delightful book will help children learn the Bible’s whole story and begin to appreciate the fulfillment of God’s promise to his people.

The Big Picture Bible Story Book is perfect for parents to read to their children, and eventually, for children to read on their own. It is an excellent way to introduce them to a book that will guide them through all of life.

4 out of 5 stars Very good pruchase.......2007-09-28

I am very pleased with this bible story book. The artwork is bright and engaging, my two 4 yr. olds love it. They want to hear the stories again and again. My ONLY qualifier for this book, the reason I didn't give it 5 stars, is that I wasn't aware it was a "story" that had to be read from start to finish. For example, we tried to find Jonah b/c they had heard the story recently. We couldn't find him in there. This book is designed to read like a chapter book, each story is tied to the others. So you can't dive in anywhere with your child's favorite bible story. There is a purpose to this methodology, which is to show the big picture of God's promise and love throughout the bible. So I'm very glad I have it, but was surprised when we started going through it.

5 out of 5 stars A God-Centered Children's Bible!.......2007-08-27

My husband and I have gone through a LOT of children's Bible's with our son and this one (along with Sally Lloyd Jones' THE JESUS STORYBOOK BIBLE: EVERY STORY WHISPERS HIS NAME) are the best ones we have found thus far. The illustrations are large and beautiful and the stories are God-centered. It's a must-have for every family.

5 out of 5 stars helpful to all new readers of the Bible.......2007-08-24

Children, as well as adults new to the Bible, truly get the Big Picture of God's hand in dealing with his people. This is not a series of unrelated Bible stories but one story with many chapters. My grandkids, ages 3 to 7, are on their 3rd reading of this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Story of God's People in God's Place under God's Rule.......2007-08-18

What's the big picture of the Bible's plot line? Ask many adults who've attended church their entire lives and they can't tell you. Thanks to David Helm, parents and children can read this accessible, fast-paced overview of the major movements in the Bible's plot line. Deeply influenced by scholar Graeme Goldsworthy, Helm picks up the themes of God's people in God's place under God's rule, showing how they form the structure of the Bible story from Genesis to Revelation. Coupled together with the narrative are the outstanding illustrations by Gail Schoonmaker, whose big pictures also tell the story (and its emotion).

This is an outstanding resource for parents and grandparents to read to their children and grandchildren, giving a simple yet straight-forward overview of the Bible's plot line to all who read it. Buy it and help foster biblical literacy! Give one to new parents. And after you've read it, follow it up with The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones.

5 out of 5 stars Best First Bible.......2007-07-12

This is the best introductory children's bible available. Give it as a gift, and use it at home. Even very young ages will be able to enjoy the short stories and wonderful illustrations.

The writer maintains integrity of scripture, but it is definitely written to a young audience. Rather than a collection of stand-alone stories, it walks through the bible from a perspective of God's love, people's need, and God's redemption. Each story looks forward to a "Forever King" (Christ) and keeps the characters of the stories from becoming idols.

It is a perfect way to introduce children to God.

Book Description

Many, many adults name this book as their favorite Little Golden Book. Generations of kids have interacted with lovable, furry old Grover as he begs the reader not to turn the page—for fear of a monster at the end of the book. “Oh, I am so embarrassed,” he says on the last page . . . for, of course, the monster is Grover himself! This all-time favorite is now available as a Big Little Golden Book—perfect for lap-time reading.

5 out of 5 stars Great to read to kids, fun for adults too.......2005-05-08

After I heard about this book on NPR, I had to get it. It was just as good as promised. The story is heartwarming and humorous, taking the reader on a journey with two cowboys who lost their favorite cow. It is also wonderfully paced so that after a few readings, children can chime in to say the cowboys' favorite meal ("Guess what?" "Beans!"). There is just enough text on each page so that children with short attention spans don't lose interest, and for children with longer attention spans, the beautiful and kid-friendly illustrations contain many fun details to discuss as you are reading. It's also typeset in big block letters that are easier to recognize for kids who are still learning the alphabet.

I bought this for my favorite nephew, but before giving it to him I ended up reading it through many times just to enjoy the story and pictures. I only managed to read it to him once, but in the thank you letter my sister wrote, "No one here reads the story quite like you do," and that makes me think he might have asked to have it read to him again.

5 out of 5 stars our favorite book of all time.......2005-03-08

this story is wonderful and so are remy charlip's warm illustrations. it's nice to read a book about cowboys where the cowboys are really nice guys and good friends and cry when they lose their beloved cow, grace. so sweet, especially the very last page where charlip has re-worded the song amazing grace to sing about grace the cow.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Don't Mess With FATE or Freewill.........2006-12-17

Tonight my daughter and I were out looking for a perfect gift for a party tomorrow (gift for child required) and found this book and a doll to match sitting front and center and maybe a bit sideways at the local booksellers shop.

So we opened it up to see what adventure Miss Lilly was finding herself in this time. I'm a 1st grade teacher and Lilly and her purple purse have been very important parts of my shared readings for ...ummm...more years than I think Lilly has. My daughter Syl even had a purple purse just to act out her precious purple purse story and now with her at 17 we look at these books with longing...

Lilly's a mouse for me, living life with everything she's got, not afraid of feeling and more than a little mystified by other's inability to walk in her shoes...

Henkes always takes a good look at children with their very real life...and spins a story that just has it all. And...it has everything I don't have presently in my NCLB afflicted life in an Under performing school forced into proscribed scripted curriculum teaching so presently devoid of story...I'm Sarah "one note" on this but when you read a book like this one you realize how much a book can bring to a classroom and children.

Lilly is so charming and here she is completely with her whole soul determined to be the flower girl at her teacher's wedding, but relegated by her very favorite teacher, to watch another get the honors. Just looking at the note she writes alone to convince her teacher of her worthiness is so wonderful,it's an appeal that just should have done the trick. Henkes must someday come to my Room 10 and meet my student Gabby la la . They are somehow related, Lilly and Gab. I, too, got a note mine on Friday, "Why I am the best person to be the Class Pezidents" a new position she decided to open.

There are from time to time children who are just so invigorated, alive, so vestily in this life, so carpe diem you gotta just stand away and say..."May I assist you Madame Pezident?". Such is Lilly who doesn't immediately get the flower girl position but does through the storyline save the day....and in the end doesn't it always fall to the Lilly's of the world to sweep in graciously(even when doing so after having been second placed right in front of everyone when they knew who was supposed to be in the position of flower girl) and put it all to rights and give life a kind of warmth and zest that makes us realize that sometimes you have to live and love, they come into your life and turn it all upsideover as my Gabby La La says.

My student listens with great quiet to Lilly stories and always dramatically raises her arms and says at the end, "Oh...it's so cuuttee..that's a good story teacher." Dramatic falling to the floor in giggling ball. If read with charm this story of the wedding of Lilly's teacher is guaranteed to be a hit with all children.
The book did not need another endorsement here but after reading it and picking it up tonight for our children's gift exchange I have to say it'll be read on my apple carpet in the classroom Monday with lots of fun because I'm taking in a basket of flower petals left over from a bouquet of roses from my anniversary which is rapidly fading and I saved , perfect for reenactment purposes. Enjoy a really wonderful read and you must, must get it with the Lilly doll." Too cutes" from Gab..And may I say...you only live once, so with Lilly, its wonderful to feel with every cell you have heads to toes...throw a few petals all over and practice the day you'll be called forth to walk down your aisle.

5 out of 5 stars Slinger Shotguns Shotwell.......2006-12-14

An instant classic!

Henke does it again, great book. Henke creates very real characters who grapple with emotions about as intense as I've seen for this format. In Lilly's perfect day, her teacher, Mr. Slinger, in an act of naked nepotism, elevates his own niece to the role of flower girl. This despite the inordinate amount of energy Lilly has put towards practicing for the event, the proficiency with which she has rehearsed every precocious countenance, the inestimable classroom bragging rights with which she fixates her anticipation. This mouse is due her fate, and only the venal world of adult institutions could deny her.

No one can quite bring themselves to be direct her Lilly. "Do you understand what we are trying to tell you?" they ask. How can a child honestly answer that question? How can a parent honestly interpret a child's answer to that question. My stomach was in a knot for Lilly. I knew this was a Henke book, I knew it had to have a happy ending. But how could Lilly's youthful, brittle narcissism possibly absorb the onslaught of such a sleight? I wouldn't dream of ruining the ending here, but I will provide a little hint by saying that a baby mouse dose of propanolol would have gone a long way. But even the villainous niece's feelings are spared, as Henke ties up all the strands as only he can. Thumbs up for Henkes! And go Bears!

4 out of 5 stars What a delight!.......2006-11-04

Our little granddaughter was preparing to be a "flower girl" at the age of 2!
So reading this to her for a couple of weeks ahead of time was such
a good idea -- and so helpful.
We substituted the names of our own family members where we could,
and ad-libbed into the book as needed.
She loved it!
AND she marched down that aisle with her little basket of flowers
with such purpose! It was a very exciting time -- the book was enormously
helpful.

Book Description

Dr. Ben Carson shares how to get perspective on what's really important in life. He shares the spiritual and philosophical foundations that shaped his life.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A truly educational piece of literature!.......2004-03-14

This is my first Ben Carson book, and I can hardly finish without constantly stopping to tell someone about this amazing book! I had the brief opportunity to meet this author in February of this year, and I was amamzed then, but after starting the book I hardly know what to say. Dr. Carson has angel's wings! He is a special anointed vessel sent by God! He demonstrates through The Big Picture the ability to relate to all levels of society. He understands the pangs of the least and the priviledge of the greatest. He graciously becomes transparent and reveals of himself for the benefit of the reader. His pearls of wisdom and sound advise yield a real education when reading his book. Everyone needs to read The Big Picture and to apply its principles. I appreciate him sharing in such a meaningful way!

5 out of 5 stars Compelling read.......2003-12-21

This book should be a MUST READ for every parent and teacher as Dr Carson shares from his own experiences how he was motivated as a poor student to become a well known and respected pediatric neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital. With fascinating stories from his personal and professional life, Dr Carson weaves his wisdom with great suggestions for the racial, education and health care ills that plague our society today. It is a book you can't put down once you start reading it.

3 out of 5 stars Some Good, Some Not-So-Good.......2001-07-30

The first two parts of this book were inspiring. Dr. Carson started out by illustrating the "Big Picture" with stories from his work. In the second part he went on to talk about the importance of things like parenting, setting goals, etc. I found the last part not at all interesting. In it Dr. Carson talked about his ideas on how to overcome different social issues. This portion was atypical of his normal writing style and I found it neither captivating nor especially thought provoking.

5 out of 5 stars Superb, thought-provoking work.......2001-06-25

Dr. Ben Carson is not just a gifted surgeon. He is a healer who thinks about the spiritual dimensions of human life as well as the physical ones. In this book, he distills his experiences into a compendium of anecdotes, thoughts, and guidelines which spell out "The Big Picture" of human existence. Carson is not afraid to take controversial positions based on his deep Christian beliefs. Even readers who disagree with him, though, will find themsleves pondering Carson's thoughts. Simply put, this is a book that will touch every reader.

5 out of 5 stars Learning From the Simple Things of Life.......2000-03-08

The Big Picture gives one the message, do not overlook the simple things of life, the example of the railway track and the stone, shows that, any action done well, and well explored, can lead to greater things and opportunities of life. Dr. Carson does go into great details of his life's experiences. By the details, I can see similarities between his and mine. In fact, by practicing those household principles his mother taught him, I have been successful in raising two boys to be responsible men. He shows that anyone can live life to its fullest. As Jesus said "He came to give the abundant life." When one lives by Godly principles, success is available to all. Dr Carson gives honor and glory to the best in his life, i.e. honor to his mother, and he gives glory to God. The Big Picture demonstrates that if one man could touch the world with his God given talents, we could all strive to empower others with the same enthusiasm. Everyone can be the victor, and not a victim regardless of one's beginnings. Ben. Carson demonstrates that though we have no choice in our birth condition, and challenges, whether a challenge is of physical, economic, educational or racial origin, we can all contribute to improving our lot in life, and the lot of others globally, by using our brain to educate ourselves, and others, such as our children. The choices we make will in some way impact the world. As consumers of health care, we as individuals have the last say as to whom we wish to provide care,we need to walk the extra mile , and be proactive in achieving compassionate action, for our families and for our community.
