Book Description
Perfect for literature classes and beginning writers of all ages!
"Tell me a story of when you were little" is something children love to ask. Now ten award-winning writers: Mary Pope Osborne, Laurence Yep, James Howe, Katherine Paterson, Walter Dean Myers, Susan Cooper, Nicholasa Mohr, Reeve Lindbergh, Avi, and Francesca Lia Block tell young readers stories drawn from their own childhood memories. The authors have also contributed notes about why they chose particular memories to write about and what in their lives led them to be writers. In this way, the extraordinary stories in WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE bear witness to the origins of a writer’s art—and honor the courage, tenderness, and fragility of children.
Customer Reviews:
A WONDERFUL BOOK , ESPECIALLY FOR PRE-TEENS !.......2000-06-20
The original tales presented in this book are actual memories of childhood penned by notable children's book authors. Although most of the stories have 8-10 year-olds as their protagnonists, they deal with emotions and predicaments more easily understood, I think, by slightly older children.
Pre-teenage can be such an awkward time; these tales can be healing/instructive to those in this time of life. The authors all have written beautiful stories which really should not be missed. And, as an extra special "gift" to the reader, each story is followed by a one-page explanation/note written by the tale's author. It's a relief to realize that each author not only survived growing up, but also flourished. And I loved being allowed to share private memories of these marvelous authors.
As a great fan of Katherine Paterson, I was especially touched by her story, which involved her older, prettier sister. Perhaps even more revealing, however, is the note she wrote to accompany this story. I am sure that the feelings here expressed were the souce of her poignantly beautiful novel "Jacob Have I Loved." (Great for girls age 12 and up.)
This book also provided an introduction (at least for me) to several authors with whom I was not familiar; I look forward to reading more by them.
I am a 40-something, well-educated mom. I bought this book for my own family, but I will be purchasing more copies to give as gifts. And I look forward to the sequel to this book, already in print!

Dragon Video Training.......2007-04-28
I have been using Dragon Naturally Speaking for about 4 years. I started out with version 7, upgraded to version 7.03 Preferred, changed to version 8 Professional, and now I am using version 9 Preferred. I thought that I was fairly competent with using Dragon Naturally Speaking. But then, I had to do several presentations on the product at local clubs. So, I thought I should get more information and I ordered the 2 video CD set from Say-I-Can. I think I can safely say that I learned about 80% more than I had on my own. I have been doing computer training and computer teaching for about 12 years. I have over 80 books that are supposed to teach you how to use computer software of various sorts. In my opinion, most of them only teach you a "Table of Contents." With this video series on Dragon Naturally Speaking, you are taught how to use the program, and not just what the program does. The training is broken down into short, 5-10 minute, or so, segments. As you view one of the segments, you can pause the video, and then practice what you have seen with Dragon in a software application that you have open. You also get to see Dan Newman, the president of Say-I-Can, talking to you as he demonstrates how the program works. I like this effect, and think that it personalizes the instruction and makes it more friendly to follow. Dragon Naturally Speaking is a full voice recognition software product. It will work in many software applications. If you want to learn more about using the product, I highly recommend these training videos.

2nd Quater Book Project.......2007-01-16
The Princess Tales Volume One By Gail Carson Levine
Rosella is a princess that was granted with a spell that made jewels come out of her mouth when she talked. No one really appreciated her but they appreciated her jewels.
Lorelei was a girl that lived with her nanny that didnt like her very much at all. Lorelei ends up pretending that she was a princess and it turned out she did eveything a real princess should be able to do.
Sonaro was a princess that was granted with a spell that if she was pricked with needle she would fall asleep for a hundred years and a prince would wake her up with a kiss. Sonaro gets pricked by a needle and she falls asleep for a hundrd years and she wakes up with a prince that was perfect for her.
Three princesses are each fighting hard times with spells and people.
Hundreds of years ago on Snettering-On-Snoakes these three tales take place.
Beauty, bravery, fear, hope, and love all take place in the story making it very detailed and addicting to read.
I liked this story. These tales really made me want to keep reading to find out how these princesses would go on living and why.
Warning- check your edition.......2006-03-22
This book actually deserves 4 or 5 stars EXCEPT that the one that we got when we ordered it (a few weeks ago) has a major printing error- after page 138 pages 59-90 are repeated, before picking the story back up at page 171. That means that you miss the end of the second story and the beginning of the third, which caused great distress when it was discovered halfway through a long plane flight! We have the first Harper Trophy paperback edition (2003). Get the book- but make sure you get a different edition!
Great!.......2005-08-21
I just love retellings of fairy tales, and Levine does some of the best work I've seen. They have just the right twist of humor to them, to show that she doesn't take herself too seriously, and the characters are so much fun! And it always has a happy ending, but not too sappy of an ending. I highly recommend this book for fantasy lovers of any age.
Each Story, Has Its Own Romance........2004-07-06
I love the way Gail Carson Levine has all of her chapters written in each different Princess story. The Fairy's Mistake, The Princess Test, and Princess Sonora and The Long Sleep are three different retellings of Cinderella/or Ella Enchanted, The Princess and The Pea and of course...Sleeping Beauty.
Maybe someday, another one of Gail Carson Levine's books besides Ella Enchanted, will become live action movies, too.
Very amusing, even for a young child!.......2004-06-17
I am reading these stories (both volume 1 & 2) to my 5 yr old who is completely enamored with princesses - mostly Disney. So I am exposing her to all sorts of princess stories - old and new. They have short chapters and lots of humor, making these books great read alouds. I am enjoying them just as much (if not more than) my daughter. The mixed up fairy tales, have the usual humble and pitiful beginnings and the famous happily everafter endings, but getting there is more than half the fun. Great stories for young and old alike.
Book Description
A young woman's unlikely love saves the soul of an evil vampyre in Meredith Ann Pierce's classic fantasy. "Easily the year's best fantasy."--The New York Times "Seductive . . . bewitching . . . unique. A brilliant fantasy."--Boston Globe
Customer Reviews:
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
One of those hybrid sort of books. Throw in fantasy, horror, and a bit of SF, and see what you get. Something like a little of the later Tepper, perhaps. Slightly phantasmagorical, or something like that.
Anyway, I didn't find it too compelling, and struggled through the maid's quest for her boss who has been taken by the Darkangel vampire guy.
Different, wonderful.......2007-08-14
I am so glad to see this series in print again. Pierce manages to blend fantasy and science fiction in a dark, stylish and completely original manner. Like nothing I've read before or since.
A great trilogy.......2007-07-30
I loved this trilogy! Not just for young adults.
The first one was the best, in my opinion.
The books that got me hooked on Fantasy.......2007-07-20
I read this trilogy when I was 13 in the mid eighties and I loved it. Just loved it. I could easily picture the desert, the dark castle, the dead virgins and Irrylath - oh, Irrylath - the vampire. I was completely in love with this character. So perhaps one has to be a teenager to fully appreciate this trilogy.
This series will for ever hold a special place in my heart and though I don't appreciate the ending (hence only 4 stars) it is most definitely worth a read.
If Meredith Ann Pierce ever comes to her senses and writes a sequel I will be the first one to buy it!!
A wonderful trilogy........2007-05-02
I read this trilogy in high school, and after 5 years, I discovered it again amongst the long list of books I've read over the years. It's rare when a book series actually sends a stab of nostalgia and the overwhelming desire to read it again through me, but this is one of few series that does so.
This series is well written and completely absorbing, which is as expected from Ms Pierce. I read this series and I will be completely oblivious to the world for hours.
The creativity of her environments, the fantastic creatures, the societies and peoples, the memories and backstories of her characters are all so in depth that when one reads the story they feel as though they are an invisible character that is never mentioned, but always there- you feel as though you are there- in fact, I often was quite startled when Iw as interrupted in my reading of them- I was so entranced and absorbed by the books I forgot I was in my room.
If you're looking for a series to tide you over until the Last Harry potter book comes out, this is definitely the one to get- you will NOT be disappointed.

My daughter is 10 and loves this series, she still enjoys picture books, but it is hard to find a picture book that also reflects her increased level of reading. The W.I.T.C.H. Graphic Novels are done in cartoon form, but with alot of detail. The graphics are well done and my daughter loves to read them.

This one is about the five w.i.t.c.h. girls being sucked into a painting where their magic doesnt work! And the next comic is about Will's new swim coach "Vera." I wont tell u anymore so i wont spoil it. But this was a book with great pictures so make sure u buy it!

Book Description
Most of our U·X·L advisors list mathematics reference as the number one priority for their school curriculum -- and sadly there are very few sources that address this subject at the middle school level. To fill this need for in-depth definitions and essays on mathematical concepts and scientists for younger audiences, U·X·L developed Math and Mathematicians.
This two-volume set contains facts and features that make learning about mathematics enjoyable. Students will find everything from biographies, encyclopedic articles and chronologies to word definitions and fascinating trivia.
Middle school and high school students working on cross-curriculum assignments in math class or science projects will find 50 contemporary and historical biographies ranging from three-to-five pages covering the early life, influences and career of mathematicians from around the world. They'll also discover approximately 35 concept and principle articles -- ranging from two to four pages -- describing the time period, culture and circumstances in which the breakthrough was discovered and a non-technical explanation of the principles involved. Some of the math concepts covered include currency, logarithms, prime numbers, quadrilaterals, time, weight and more.
Chronological arrangements introduce the life and achievements of the individuals profiled and contain quotes by or about the biographee, further reading lists and other anecdotal information to keep each entry interesting. Among the many mathematicians featured in this student-friendly reference include:
- Niels Abel, Norwegian algebraist
- Maria Agnesi, Italian mathematician
- George Boole, English mathematician and logician
- Euclid of Alexandria, Greek geometer
- Galileo, Italian physicist and astronomer
- Al-Khwarizmi, Arab algebraist and astronomer
- Isaac Newton, English mathematician and physicist
- Emmy Noether, German mathematician
- Pythagoras of Samos, Greek geometer and philosopher
- Srinivasa Ramanujan, East Indian number theorist
"Words to Know" sidebars are included to provide definitions for difficult mathematical and common terms, with a cumulative "Words to Know" section located in each volume's front matter. Readers will also find photographs, diagrams, charts, numerous fact boxes and other graphics to help them understand the everyday applications of these greatest mathematical discoveries.

Amber Brown is funny- actually, absolutely hilarious!.......1999-02-08
The Amber Brown series is good for everyone. I own the entire set, (all six books!) and think a lot about Justin moving away... I've already had a few best friends move away also. Although there are some sad parts, like when Justin threw away the bubble gum ball, it is a hilarious series.
All of these books are great! I share them with my class!.......1997-10-08
I checked out Amber Brown Is Not A Crayron and read it too my class. They loved all her adventures and some of my students could really relate to Amber Brown. Once I finished the book we discovered she had written more books. I read them each year to my class! I hope Amber Brown continues her adventures.
