* Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him.
* When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists.
* Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards.
* Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

* The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores--gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden--this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius.
* Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother.
* The Dueling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Dueling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

* Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'.
* Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behavior in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children.
* The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

* Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them.
* Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it.
* Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge.
* Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

* Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming.
* Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone.
* Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager.
* Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape.
* Dumbledore's confession to Harry.

Starts out with a Bang and Becomes a Real Page-turner.......2007-10-01

I've got to admit, as the Potter series continues, it only gets better. The Half-blood Prince grabs your attention from the start and unfolds into the darkest of the series. This book contains many twists and turns, most of which leave the reader wanting to find out more. What makes this book different from the others is that there are quite a few surprises as characters reveal personalities that may not have been fully unveiled previously and this, in turn, leads to a highly fascinating read. I'm afraid that I have to admit, I was about to put the book down before calling it a night, with about 100 pages to go and simply couldn't - the story became so enthralling that I just had to go on to finish it! I don't think that there is any question (at least in my mind), that Half-blood Prince, is the best of the series so far. As with all good series, this one left with a real cliff-hanger - I'm only glad that I waited until the Rowling finished the series - that way, I don't have to wait for the next one to come out: I've already started the final book. Got to get back to my reading!

This book will be something to be read for generations. I put this series somewhere between Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings for greatest series of books of all time. This particular book is mostly an introduction to the final book in the series, "The Deathly Hallows". It is a self contained plot but leaves much to the next book to finish. I highly recommend the entire series.

The darkest and most intriguing Potter book I've read yet .......2007-09-25

As I've only just begun book seven, I'll count Half-Blood Prince as my favorite in this series thus far. I figured that I would wait until I've finished the entire series and do a review on the series as a whole, but Rowling truly outdid herself with this volume, so I thought I'd put in my two cents.

When book 7 came out a couple months back, I decided I needed to catch up, having only read up to book 3 (and I didn't want to take the easy route and just go by the movies, which are good, but not to be replacements for Rowling's fine prose.) I gobbled up book 4, which was amazing. Order of the Phoenix, while a good book, took me a bit longer to trudge through, and not just because of its sheer immensity. It seemed to be on a bit of an off-note in comparison to the other Potter books. Dolores Umbridge was a horrendously annoying character, and while she may have been essential to the story, she seemed to be in every other scene and her constant nagging of every single character really started to get on my nerves. Book 5 had plenty of action and detail into the wizarding world, but the "fun" -at least in some ways- seemed to be sucked out of it.

"Prince" gives the series the shock to the heart that it needed, bringing the fun back while managing to still get progressively darker. I found to my delight that this book has some seriously twisted stuff. There were times reading "Prince" that I began to wonder at how young kids must react to some of the goings-on here. I won't give much away, but we have elements such as Harry trying out a spell that turns out to be borderline mutilation, animated corpses that George Romero would envy, and as most have surely had spoiled for them, the death of a very major character. The latter, while I indeed had spoiled for me beforehand, still came as quite a shock and the child in me found myself in denial that it even happened. Her unpredictability in killing off essential characters makes her writing suspenseful in a way that I haven't found in fantasy since George R.R. Martin (sorry kids, he's an author for adults only. At least wait until high school for him.)

We also have a subject new to this book: Horcruxes. Bravo, Rowling; this is brilliant. Not only do Horcruxes explain a good deal about past books and prove yet again that she has her material planned well in advance, but it is a genius plot device. Harry and Dumbledore's investigations into this subject provide a very entertaining plot thread.

So, for anyone like me whose faith in the Potter series might have waned a little with book 5, Half-Blood Prince is well worth the wait. It brings back the mystery and wonder of the series that we found all the way back to the first book. While I haven't finished the series yet, I do believe that Rowling has earned herself a place next to CS Lewis and even J.R.R. Tolkien in creating a series that will be timeless for generations, that both children can love and perhaps adults can love even more.

The 6th harry potter book in my opinion is one of the best. I have read it three times. It starts the beginning of the end and is a very good transitional book. Rowling is masterful in the way she transitions from one thing to another and writes another masterpiece with harry potter and the half-blood prince

It seems to be a never-ending battle. We start the day with the best of intentions. Today we are going to eat right, exercise, and control our stress. Then reality sets in. We wake up late (that stupid alarm didn't ring) to a chaotic mess of getting kids off to school on time (making sure that homework actually accompanies them). Our only aim at this point is to get to work before the boss notices. There's no time for a real breakfast, exercise, or a nice relaxing meditation session. Coffee and a donut will have to do as we drive through hectic traffic.

By midmorning, adrenaline and four cups of coffee have worn off and we are starting to feel drained. To make up time lost, we skip lunch or gobble down some fast food as we try to get caught up. With some food in our stomach's we finally feel back to normal. Unfortunately, this feeling is short lived and the day drags on.

We all know that we should do better. We all know that we should take the time to eat right, to exercise, and to reduce our stress. However, just getting through each day seems to take up all the energy we have.

I bought this book for my older daughter, who is overweight. Much of the symptoms of her condition were detailed in the book. But the book is too long. Anybody trying to reduce and control weight wants fast results.
A book so big is not practical. Author should review and condense it, probably to less than half.

This book taught me a lot of things about my body. I was never aware of my blood sugar levels, but now I recognize feelings I've always had - shaky, irritable - as low blood sugar. I've totally changed my diet b/c of this book, and I'm losing weight without being hungry. I'm sending my copy to a friend, and I've been telling a lot of people about it.

I really only read the first half or so. It gets a little repetitive, which is fine. That's the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. You'll hit a section that appeals to your way of thinking. The message is the same throughout. It's not breathtaking, but it's full of staistics and information that will change the way you think. e.g. most Americans only get half the recommended amount of fiber in their diets.

I feel like reducing high glycemic index foods has ton a lot for me. I had a chronic cold/sinus infection for over 6 months that is gone. I feel more clear-headed. I'm able to resist my cravings for sweets, which is a big deal to me.

Get this book! It will turn your attitude around, and change your body and your life.

In Cold Blood is incredibly well written. Unlike many of his short stories, the prose is clean and not overly adorned. Without moralizing, he simply tells the story of one of the most random and nonsensical murders of his time. In my opinion, Capote wrote one great book, and this is it.

Because I practice criminal law, I walk around in a world with stories like this one everyday. So I didn't really see the big deal until I finished reading Capote's In Cold Blood. Capote makes a nonfiction account read like fiction. That may not sound like much, but it impressed the hell out of me. Usually nonfiction has a dull feel to it. It just doesn't pop like fiction does. But Capote is able to cut right through that and make this story every bit as compelling as fiction without giving it a corny, Court-TV "true-crime" feel.

I'm disappointed- period. I truly feel as though the middle 200 pages could've been removed from this book and I would not have missed out on any importance, nor would I have noticed. I personally did not get much value out of this book. I wish I could have had a different experience.

I feel I have been forced to seek out reviews that explain some deep-seeded theme that was completely fabricated by some "scholarly" reviewer, which the author never initially intended. Maybe that would satisfy me.

Blood Rites (2004) is the sixth urban fantasy novel in the Harry Dresden series, following Death Masks. In the previous volume, John Marcone grabbed the Shroud from Nicodemus and jumped off the train into the river. Michael Carpenter attacked Nicodemus and was overwhelming him, but then Nicodemus pulled a gun and shot Michael several times through his breastplate. Harry temporarily overcame Nicodemus and got Michael off the train.

Marcone pulled Harry from the river with the Shroud. After that, Harry didn't remember anything until he woke up in Charity's guest room. Marcone still had the Shroud. By following the gang boss around the city, Harry finally learned why Marcone had commissioned the theft of the Shroud.

In this novel, Harry is running hard down the abandoned school hallway with a box of puppies in his arms. The old school is on fire, but not because of him. Three monkey demons are chasing him, throwing gobs of flaming monkey poop at him and starting fires all along the corridors. One puppy keeps climbing up and barking at the monkey demons.

Once Harry drops the box and the puppies fall out. Harry scoops them up and starts running again, but the little notched-ear pup has been left behind. As he stands growling at the monkeys, Harry turns back, gathers him up and starts running again. Finally he gets outside the building and runs toward the Blue Beetle.

A larger version of the monkey demons bursts out of the doors. The other three monkeys ram the large demon and are absorbed, making the large demon become still larger. This entity spreads his wings and takes off, buzzing the Blue Beetle. Harry yells at Thomas to start the car, then dives in the passenger side and stuffs the box of puppies into the back.

The flying monkey throws incendiaries at the Volkswagen. Thomas hangs onto Harry's leg as he hangs out the door and blasts the monkey. Then Harry has Thomas stop the car and blasts the demon right between the eyes. Scratch one demon, at least for a little while!

Harry passes the box of puppies on to his client, but fails to notice the notch-eared pup under the seat. When he finds the pup, his client has already left for Tibet and is unavailable. Harry decides to keep the pup for a while until he can make some other arrangements.

In this story, Thomas asks Harry to talk to an erotic film producer who seems to be suffering from a curse. Arturo is Greek and has three ex-wives. His female associates are dying in strange ways. Harry wonders if the man has been cursed with an entropy spell, but also considers an Evil Eye curse. He finally agrees to talk with Arturo.

Harry reports to work the next day at the makeshift studio. As a production assistant, he is basically a gofer. At least he will be able to observe the crew and sense the curse first hand. That morning, Harry senses an evil magic rising near him and tracks it to a staff restroom. Another woman has been badly hurt and only saved from death by Harry's timely intervention.

Later, Harry finds out that Lara -- one of the actresses -- is the older sister of Thomas. She is a vamp in more than one sense of the word. She exudes sexuality, but what would you expect from a White Court vampire?

This story involves ancient Greek witchcraft and modern contract law. Harry begins to understand the motivation for the murders, but not the means. He suspects that an experienced and talented sorcerer is behind the curse, but is otherwise clueless. He starts checking out Arturo's financial circumstances.

Highly recommended for Butcher fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of exotic magic, strange deaths, and a stubborn wizard.

I can't say it any clearer than this: you should read every book in this series. Start at the beginning and work your way through to the latest book. If you like fantasy, mystery, suspense...these books will not disappoint. Harry Dresden is an engaging and sympathetic character: funny, determined, intelligent, with just the right amount of angst in his history. And the secondary characters are each equally as interesting. If you've seen the TV series on SciFi channel, you'll love these books. And if you haven't - you should still read these books.

Significant Character Development.......2007-06-05

While the plot of "Blood Rites" seems rather more light and frothy than the previous book "Death Masks", "Blood Rites" also manages to become significant in the journey of its protagonist Harry Dresden.

It's difficult to take psychic (even perhaps sex?) vampires making porn too seriously, but as part of Harry's emotional journey, the events of "Blood Rites" seem to have some great signficance and appear to have consequences which will linger.

A fun read. Essential to the series with some surprisingly serious consequences to what is a more or less relatively light plot (probably because it deals with Thomas, the amusing vampire introduced to the series in "Grave Peril". In fact, several elements of "Grave Peril" reappear in this book, not as a retread but as a step-forward of the series.)

Any time I describe the concept behind this series to someone(ex-cop with night blindness teams up with a vampire to help her with night work), they laugh and then go get a pencil and paper so they can write it down. I ate this first volume up in a couple of days and ran out to get the next two. These are interesting and engaging, and don't take themselves too seriously. If you like Laurell K. Hamilton and Karen Armstrong, you'll probably like Tanya Huff, too.

These books are good if you like vampire books. These are the books that Lifetime TV are basing their new show Blood Ties on. I liked the show so I ordered the books to read.

I wish I'd found this series earlier..........2007-06-20

Like several other people, I bought this book because of the TV show "Blood Ties", which I enjoyed, but found cheesy upon occassion. I expected the books to be similar, but was pleasantly surprised.

These novel focus on the actual mystery/action/conflict. There is some sexual tension and little bit of sex, but it more alluded to than shoved in your face (no detailed sex scenes, YAY!!!). The characters of Vicki, Celluci, and Henry are 3-D and well thought out. There are snippits from Henry's past, which I love. It makes him more of a character than on the TV show where he just shows up, does the vampy thing, and goes on. Vicki is an amazing strong heroine who takes no crap from anyone.

As someone else stated, the first novel follows the TV Pilot exactly. I already knew what was going to happen, so it was a little dull. Not because of the writing though. The second novel was very good, with a family of werewolves who are being killed systematically by silver bullets.

Another thing I like about these novels were the "villians". Instead of just pure evil people, like in so many other novels, these villians are fairly normal people who slowly are tempted into evil. Nice touch and more believable.

An entertaining and rewarding read........2007-10-03

I came upon this book in searching for an understanding of the historical period in which Cormac McCarthy's masterpiece Blood Meridian is set - the SW of North America in the early to mid-19th century. The book's central theme is the life and times of Kit Carson coupled with the demise of the Navajos in the face of the onslaught of American expansion. Nonetheless, in setting these themes in context, the book addresses all the forces that bore upon them - from the relationship of the early trappers with indigenous society to the seizure of New Mexico and California - in fascinating and enlightening detail. The book is scholarly and authoritative - although there was a complete absence of reference numbers in the text itself to tie in with notes at the back of the book. Even had these been inserted, more detailed references would have better exploited the enormous amount of original research clearly conducted by the author.

The style is informal with a turn of phrase that occasionally touches on the cliche. Still, for all this it is a highly readable, entertaining and vivid account. Perhaps a little hagiographic at times, but then Carson was an extraordinarily self-contained and capable man of principle and character.

In all, this is a highly rewarding book that vividly portrays the broad vistas, horrors, tragedies, heroics and sheer physical hardships that marked the clash of civilisation in America's South West. A great read.

Bury My Soul With the Navajo.......2007-09-26

If you want to dare look into a horror that can haunt you, read this heart stabbing book. It sheds light on the history of the American west and the US government's heartless to destory a people. The details of Kit Carson are as perplexing as mankind is troubling. I also recommend two other books along the same lines: On the Trail of the Pony Express and especially Walking the Trail, One Man's Journey Along the Cherokee Trail of Tears, both by Cherokee author Jerry Ellis. Ellis was the first person in modern history to walk the 900 mile route of the Trail of Tears and the book is a Native American classic, nominated for a Pulitzer and National Book Award.

Sometimes One-Sided and Misleading.......2007-09-10

As I read through this book, I was amazed that very detailed research had been done and that both sides of the many stories/events had been told. I was severely disappointed when I read chapter 40 - The Children of the Mist when the description and events leading to, during, and after the Mountain Meadows Massacre. The author would like the casual reader to think that the whole event was endorsed by the then President of the LDS Church, Brigham Young. In my personal research, this is far from the case - the presidency of the church at that time would have never approved an act such as that. I would like to note that Mr. Sides did not give any references for quotes by Brigham Young or notes to what happened to the actual ringleaders of the massacre. This was a horrible event and the story needs to be told in the right context. These missing references make me question the quality of the real research that went into the book on a whole.

This is a sobering history of how the west was tamed and the significant role Kit Carson played in it. Kit Carson played a key role in saving various American Indian Tribes from extinction. An excellant history of New Mexico. A must read for any New Mexican.

I found this book to be a very easy read. It gives very simple straight forward explanations and rationale for the diet and it's theories. It further reads like an instruction manual and very clearly explains what foods are beneficial, neutral, or an avoid. Pretty straight forward, if it's beneficial eat it, if it's an avoid, avoid it. And if it's a neutral it has little significance either way, so you can eat it but don't make it a diet staple.

Great Way to Lose Weight -- Best for Type O.......2007-08-24

I have followed the guidelines in this book loosely for 2 weeks and have lost over 8 pounds. Which is a 20% of the weight I want to lose by December. I am type O which is the best type to be on this diet because it allows for a larger range of foods. Type O's should definately try this diet, and its not hard to follow. The Other blood types should try this as well, but food options are more restricted. So if you have a hard time avoiding certain foods this may not be for you.

In John Robbins new book, "Healthy At 100", he studies the Abkhasians of the Caucasus Mountains, the Vilcabambans of Ecuador and the Hunzans of Pakistan. These are probably the three healthiest populations in the world. None of them prepare special foods for different people of different blood types. Yet they are almost universally healthy and happy.

Weston Price traveled the world back in the 1930s and examined the healthiest tribes of people to be found. None of them prepared different foods for people of different blood types.

To the best of my knowledge, there has never been a single scientific study demonstrating that people of different blood types have different nutritional needs.

Blood type diets are nothing more than silly mumbo-jumbo. Why do people embrace this kind of dietary cult? I'm not sure. Maybe because people feel a need to be segmented and divided in some way. This is MY special blood type diet! I eat this and you shouldn't. Maybe people embrace this stuff because it helps rationalize decisions that they have already made.

Thrilling Sequel to Moon Called.......2007-08-29

At the end of Moon Called (first book in the series), Mercy Thompson the shapeshifting mechanic, owed the local vampires a favour, and in Blood Bound they want paying back. A visiting vampire is causing problems and Stefan, (Mercy's vampire friend) wants her help whilst he tries to sort it out.

In my opinion Blood Bound is a much more tightly written story than Moon Called. We already know about the relationships, pack-conflicts and back story, so here we are able to get stuck in to the meat of the story straight away. Although I do think it's possible to read Blood Bound as a standalone, it would be much better to read Moon Called first so you've got all this rich background information in your head.

The relationships within the werewolf pack continue to evolve and I think this is far and away my favourite part of the story. Each werewolf is such an individual character and to see how they are located within the hierarchy and how they struggle or accept that, gives the story a depth it might not otherwise have had. In Blood Bound this pack structure is held in direct comparison with the more clinical vampire society, which makes for fascinating reading.

If I had a concern at all, it would be as mentioned in another review. Mercy picks up another admirer and I think this has the potential to take away from the tension in her relationship with the two werewolves already vying for her attention.

Blood Bound is resolved very nicely, but there are enough plot threads left dangling to leave me desperately looking forward to the next book in the series - especially the new werewolf who only appears off-page here.

There will be a short story set in Mercy's world in the On the Prowl anthology released in August 2007.

Mercy Thompson, VW mechanic, is always finding herself the center of turmoil. Whether it's the werewolves (who raised her), the vampires ( who respect her talents and still want to kill her as soon as she's done being useful) or the other non-human residents of this version of Washington's Tri-Cities (who don't understand her, and hope she doesn't get them killed), someone is always in need of Mercy's particular talents.

Mercy is a skin-walker who can shift into a coyote. She also sees ghosts who frequently communicate with her. She is part of the non-human community, but as the only "walker", she's often on her own.

I loved this second book in Patricia Briggs' new series. I can't wait for the next.

Great book! .......2007-06-21

Mercy Thompson, mechanic and shapeshifter (coyote). I like Mercy because she's not the strongest or the badest woman in this book/series. Nor is she trying to be. She has many friends in low places (mostly male - a girl after my own heart) and of all persuasions; vampires, werewolves, a witch, a ghost, and many more. Mercy is clever not relying on shear brute strength or strength of power to get her out of jams. I'm thoroughly enjoying Patricia Briggs books and am anxiously awaiting the next book(s).

Okay, now to my only criticism of the book/series. She seems to have almost all males in the story sniffing around her. Maybe this is like the saying that men can't "just be friends". Or that they are pretending to be friends till the time is right. It could just be me, but I would like to see more story than love triangles between numerous suitors. (I get that in heaping doses from another author I read.)

I was really disappointed when I read the Blood books. Based on other reviews, I was expecting something better, something more like the Harry Dresden books which are so much fun to read. This book plans out your diet very easily and makes everything very blunt and easy to follow. I personally didn't stick to the diet because I began having bad stomach cramps, probably from such a drastic change, but if you're willing to try it, go for it. I know someone who saw fabulous results from it. So it's worth looking into.

I just find it very confusing. I've been eating, what I thought, was very healthy for about the past 14 months and the book really contradicts most of what I've been told I was doing right!! Very confusing!

I did not have a profound experience utilizing this booklet and gave the booklet away after reading it. It's a skinny little booklet with a little information. In hindsight, I do not recommend this booklet. My recommendation is for the Atkin's book, New Diet Revolution, a great resource for eating healthy and is loaded with good practical information.

Great to take on trips or just out to eat. It is also useful for those days your not feeling yourself and you need some remedies.

This small in size large in content book is good to take along with you when you go food shopping. A lot of the foods I like, don't like me according to this book and I agree with 93% of this point of view. The book is a fast read and another good reference for you to consider while building your life time diet plan.
