Children find the story of Goldilocks delightful for so many reasons. There's a trespassing little girl, for starters, who barges into the bears' house uninvited and not only snoops around, but eats the bears' food! The suspense of wondering whether she'll get caught only adds to the thrill of the trespassing itself, and the repeated lines about the three bears with their three distinct voices, bowls, chairs, and beds further endear this tale to the preschool set. In Jan Brett's Goldilocks, the bears and the slightly audacious flaxen-haired heroine all sport traditional (Black Forest?) costumes with detailed embroidery, and the wooden furniture is carved with bears, birds, and flowers. (Intricate borders--carved wooden panels in this book--are Jan Brett's special signature.) Brett is the illustrator of many well-known folk tales, fairy tales, and poems, such as The Mitten and Edward Lear's The Owl and the Pussycat. Of her exquisite interpretation of this beloved story, Booklist writes, "This is perfection." (Ages 3 to 6)

4 out of 5 stars amazing detail.......2007-05-18

The great appeal to this book are the illustrations that have so much detail that a young child could really sit with this book and find something new in each retelling. I agree with some of the previous reviewers that the limitations of this book are that the illustrations do not emphasize big, medium and small. This is a real shame, as this story has always been a great start to introduce the concept of size to young children.

4 out of 5 stars Attention to Detail.......2007-03-13

This is a nice retelling of the familiar three bears story. The only thing I did not like about the wording is that she refers to the bears as "great, huge bear", "middle-sized bear", and "little, small, wee bear". I think that this would be a mouthful to read aloud, and personally I just like "momma bear", "papa bear", and "baby bear" better. However, the illustrations in this book make up for it because they are absolutely gorgeous. They are incredibly detailed, and include the borders and previews to the next pages that Jan Brett is known for. I really enjoyed looking at this book, and found something new in the artwork each time I did!

4 out of 5 stars Great Pictures, Solid Retelling, Great Message.......2006-07-15

Variations on "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" have long entranced children. Whether it is Robert Southey's version from 1837, whether Goldilocks was simply an old woman, or the many modern varieties, the themes are the same: If it isn't yours, don't touch it.

"Goldilocks and the Three Bears," as told and drawn by Jan Brett, is a thrill to read. With big pictures, ready for a parent or teacher to show to younger ones, it is in typical Jan Brett detail. Doe-eyed Goldilocks does all the things we expect, as do the two parent bears and their son, the little, small, wee bear.

Bear motifs decorate the bears' kitchenware, providing a "Where's Waldo?" type of exercising and a smile for the child as he finds another bear hidden in the pictures.

Special care looks to be taken with drawing a realistic rendition of Goldilocks.

The retelling is good, though not magnificent. It will read without a hitch as far as meter is concerned. It is prose, but told in a fairy tale mode. The repetitions of describing the bears as they discover evidence of Goldilocks will be fun to say and hear aloud.

The bears are not as intimidating as they might be in real life. When the final confrontation comes, it is far less scary. The bears, in fact, with the little one in particular, are sympathetic as they watch Goldilocks sleep. She runs not because of provocation, but from the surprise of waking with three large animals watching. I would run too!

I fully recommend "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" drawn by Jan Brett.

5 out of 5 stars Magical Ilustrations.......2006-05-26

This book has beautiful, magical, fantastical pictures with Jan Brett's typical detail and whimsy. The bear's house is extraordinary. I think it is one of her very best books and goes well with the old-fashioned text. No other version of this story compares.

4 out of 5 stars Best illustrations out there........2005-09-21

This whimsical depiction of Goldilocks and the Three Bears doesn't do anything new or innovative with the storyline, but it doesn't have to. Jan Brett's amazingly detailed and intricate pictures will capture your attenion on every page. I found myself going back over and over the pictures, finding more little details each time. Something that Mom and Dad can enjoy right along with the kids.

I was worried this would be yet another Spanish book we would not benefit from as much as I had hoped for. GREAT news, it has the words in English and Spanish. The first part of the CD helps guide you on how to use the CD and book (e.g. go over key words that are in the story and then read the story). The people reading the book sound like native speakers so now I can read the book with out the CD and actually pronounce the words properly. My 3 year old twins LOVE the book and have started using several of the words and phrases. GREAT buy!

5 out of 5 stars I would give it ten stars, if I could!.......2007-06-30

I can't say enough about how great this book is and how important reading is in learning a language! I am a biligual mother (English/Spanish). I have finally made it a habit to speak Spanish to my 3 1/2-year-old daughter, Sabrina.

When I bought this book, and Caperucita Roja by Ana Lomba, Sabrina fell in love with them! We read them every night before bedtime and half the time before naptime. In two weeks, her understanding/speaking capabilities increased by two or three times! The language acquisition theorist Stephen Krashen explains in his book, The Power of Reading, why reading is so helpful. If you want to learn another language, or you want your child to learn another language with you, you MUST include LOTS of reading material. You will learn so much faster! It's so much fun to read together. And it's so exciting to learn another language and watch your child learn and grow in another language as well.

Buy this book, Caperucita Roja, Play & Learn Spanish and "Hop, Skip & Sing Spanish" as well. Everything by Ana is great!

P.S. Ana, if you read this, please write more fun fairy tale books!

4 out of 5 stars Liked it.......2007-06-27

We like the book and the CD. FYI... The CD and the Spanish text are not always word-for-word.

5 out of 5 stars Great book - keeps kids entertained while they learn.......2006-08-23

This is a great book to support language learning at home. It comes with a CD so you can "hear" the story in English or Spanish and review keywords in the story. My kids love the illustrations and the animated voices of the bears. The CD has been great to use in the car -- my kids quiet down as soon as I put it on. AS a parent who is also learning Spanish, I appreciate being able to hear the story and see the text in both English and Spanish. And as a professional who specializes in dual-language books, I highly recommend adding this to your collection.

Book Description

This picture book is an adaptation of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the classic folktale retold with a special-needs twist. Children will find all of the familiar characters and scenes from the original story, as well as a few surprises-Baby Bear uses a wheelchair, goes to physical therapy while his porridge cools, and ultimately makes friends with Goldilocks. This new version is especially appealing to children with physical disabilities. It's also an entertaining tale for all children, with or without special needs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Terrific.......2006-07-17

My daughter with cerebral palsy, (as well as her siblings) loved this book. Every piece of adaptive equipment she has had is represented somewhere. The therapy scenes depict cute animals with all degrees of ability. She will just sit and look through it sometimes. It may not get specific about the nature of the disability, but it is great for kids with physical limitations to see their challenges represented in a fun story!

5 out of 5 stars It's a great Book!.......2000-01-14

This a familiar story for children with a special twist. Baby bear is in a wheelchair. The story talks about his special equipment and his therapy but still tells the basic story familiar to the children. The pictures are delightful and the words are 'just right'. It is an excellent addition to our Head Start library.

5 out of 5 stars good book using familar story to teach about disability.......1999-09-12

As an RN I feel this book is useful in using an established storyline to introduce children to others who have a disability. Children who read this already know and can relate to the story, and therefore can use this information to better understand a friend or family member who may be confined to a wheelchair.

5 out of 5 stars Useful, enjoyable French language learning resource.......2007-06-27

My children--2 and 4 years old--have enjoyed listening to me read Goldilocks in French. I haven't had as much use for the CD, but it is fairly well produced (the female French voice is, in fact, BEAUTIFUL; I'm not as crazy about the male English voice, but that's a personal opinion). Those uncomfortable reading aloud in French could certainly depend upon the quality of the CD.

I think that the illustrations, though cartoonish, really elucidate the text well. I base this on the fact that I read the story to my kids in English only once, and yet they can obviously follow along with the French page by page.

I would recommend this resource for parents interested in introducing young kids to French through reading. Also highly recommended: Le Petit Chien Se Trouve Un Ami and similar books in the I Can Read French Barron's Educational Series, and the Complete Lyric Language: French CD.

4 out of 5 stars Book is great. Audio track needs work.......2007-04-28

My kids and I love the book. Illustrations are great the translations are great. Unfortunately, the audio is poor quality. It sounds like the reader is inside a vault. Very hollow and tinny sounding. Still worth the price and it does help with pronunciations, but probably not something you'll listen to a lot.

I purchased this book for a [...]. Product details in the description state reading level 4-9, however, I didn't see that back cover intends this book for[..]children. I am a bit disapponted with this discrepancy from Amazon, as I wanted a book that would be appropriately challenging.

5 out of 5 stars C'est magnifique!.......2007-01-09

The books in this series have a quality binding and are very sturdy and will hold up to repeated use. The text is very easy to read and the accompanying CD is invaluable for training the ear to hear the French pronunciations. What a sweet child, says a newcomer in town about Goldilocks. That's what you think, a neighbor replies. For Goldilocks is one of those naughty little girls who does exactly as she pleases--even if that means sampling the three bears' porridge, breaking Baby Bear's chair, and sleeping in his bed. James Marshall's offbeat and inventive telling of this familiar tale will enchant readers, young and old. A delightfully irreverent retelling of an old favorite is illustrated with delicious humor and contemporary touches. -- Booklist, starred review

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Great James Marshall Has it Just RIght.......2006-04-27

The only qualities shared by James Marshall's Goldilocks and that other famous eating-stting-and-sleeping girl are their hair color and a very low tolerance for porridges, chairs, and beds that aren't just right. This Goldilocks is...well...a brat, "one of those naughty little girls who do exactly what they please.
Ignoring her mother's directive, as well as several "Roadrunner"-like signs ("Turn Back," "Go The Other Way," "Not a Good Idea), she takes the forbidden shortcut and happens upon the house of Papa, Mama, and Baby Bear.

Marshall's revives this old chestnut with his prank-loving, slightly mean-spirited heroine. Aside from disobeying her mother, she seems gluttonous, spoiled, and not overly bright. ALthough pictures of bears hang all over the walls, and she notices "a lot of coarse brown fur," all she can think is "They must have kitties." She devours baby Bear's porridge, breaks the chair, and has the nerve to crawl into Papa's bed after finding the other two unsuitable. Her rationale is the repeated "I don't mind if I do."

The animals' language accounts for much of the humor. The chair is not just broken--it's broken to "smithereens!" Papa Bear cries "Patooie!" after scalding his tongue, and when Baby Bear gets similarly dramatic, Mama Bear, who represents the happy medium both in size and disposition, admonishes them "Now really, that's quite enough." While the Bears are pleasant and dressed in Easter-best clothes, Papa Bear is clearly "not amused" when he sees his rumpled bed. And what does Papa Bear do when he catches Goldilocks in bed, her teetch clutching a blue blanket? Marshall combines a mild message--like that uttered by some proper English landowner--with an animal delivery: "Now see here!" roared Papa Bear."

The bright ink and watercolor illustrations lend humor and flesh out the story. Emotions are exaggerated as in a silent movie: GOldilocks sticks out her tongue, fkashes us a sneaky look, and, for contrast, pauses thoughtfully with her thin straight mouth as she considers her choices. THe book won a Caldecott honor. Although we can be fairly certain that Goldilocks won't be "visiting" the bears again, you and your young audience will return to Marshall's "Goldilocks" whenever a slightly subversive and slyly humour tale would be just right.

5 out of 5 stars Once there was a nice little girl nam--Oh wait a minute!.......2005-03-29

Whoever knew a day would come when Goldilocks', sweet little Goldilocks' squeaky clean image would be finally tarnished. I mean this chick stole and tresspassed and no one ever said a word. But in this James Marshall retelling, Goldilocks is potrayed as, well-a brat. When a new lady moves into town, she comments to a man about how sweet the little girl looks. He replies with, "That's what YOU think."

One morning our antagonist is asked by her mother to go buy some muffins in the next village, making Goldilocks promise not to take a shortcut, due to bears. But since the story is called "and the Three Bears," we know Goldilocks takes the shortcut. Meanwhile, the three bears are sitting down for breakfast-porridge, of course. But the porridge is too hot, so they go off on their three-seat bicycle. Minutes later Goldilocks finds herself at the bear's house, and the famed porridge tasting/bed sampling episode begins. I'm sure you know what happens afterwards(The bears come home, and so on...)

James Marshall(of the George and Martha books) has crafted a fresh new take on a famous fairy tale and succeded, with a Caldecott Honor Medal to boot.

As always, R, your friendly neighborhood reviewer.

1 out of 5 stars Goldilocks..........2004-04-27

THe story of glodilocks is more than just story that will put your child to sleep. If one reads deeper into the story they can find morals instilled. These fairytales are a great way to teach young children many lessons. Depending on the version read one may be able to extract many different views. Not only does it depnd on the authors views but also the background of the reader(you)

5 out of 5 stars Goldilocks Revised.......2004-03-24

After reading "Goldilocks and The Three Bears" by James Marshall many children may start listening to their mothers about taking shortcuts. Goldilocks is portrayed as a naughty neighbor when she takes a shortcut through the woods and rummages through a house eating porridge, breaking chairs, and falling asleep on a perfectly sized bed. What she did not realize was that three bears lived there. This would prove to be a rude awakening for her to possibly start listening to her mother. The brightly colored watercolor and ink illustrations are complimented by vivid lines, varied textures, and abstract shapes to portray the adventurous movement of the text. The balance of design shows a humorous side to a well known story through the text and variety of full page and bordered illustrations which received a Caldecott Honor in 1989. This book showcases the many emotions a child may have on an unsafe journey through the woods which Marshall paints vividly on both Goldilocks and the three bear's facial expressions. Marshall's modern tone throughout the book makes this version of the classic folktale seem socially relevant and up to date keeping the interest of the reader. This is a must have for every child and their classroom's book collection.

5 out of 5 stars Discovery.......2003-11-04

I have recently been studing the condition Autism and when it came to reading appropriate stories to suit the needs of children with this condition, I had a brainwave and I think that Goldilocks was an autistic child, due to her unsuitable social graces by our standards. It may have been thought to protray Goldilocks as "naughty" for being out on her own and going into the bears house. I think that Goldilocks didn't know she was doing anything out of the way, as children do not tend to go to sleep in strange houses. This would typify the behaviour of some of the children with the condition Autism from my research. I would like to know more about the aurthor of this story and I wonder what his view would have been on my thinking. 3/11/2003 by Eilish O'Hanlon I would like to have this thought registered to the above date and see if any similar thoughts have been recorded on this subject.

5 out of 5 stars My 2nd grade loved this book!.......2000-09-14

My second grade students loved this book. Children get tired of hearing the same old boring stories told over and over again. So, when I said that I had found a different version of the story, they were all ears. They laughed, but i still think that they liked the original better....

Book Description

Some stories become favored childhood classics with good reason, such as the tale of Goldilocks. Here, in an abundantly funny retelling, the timehonored drama unfolds. This outrageously frilly, jump-roping Goldilocks skips through the bears' house, reciting saucy rhymes as she goes. Her wide-eyed glee makes a hilarious contrast with the genteel bear family, and children will love poring over the wonderful visual details, such as the bear-related knickknacks slyly scattered throughout the cottage.

Another outstanding collaboration from Caralyn and Mark Buehner, Goldilocks and the Three Bears is perfect for sharing with children, adults, and fairy-tale collectors alike.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable! But fell short for us..........2007-09-30

I had looked forward to getting this version as I saw that it had hidden surprises in the pages...however, even upon several reads, these appear to be extremely elusive and actually confusing. Thought this would give the book more appeal to my children, but found it disappointing. The story and pictures otherwise are pleasant, but the first version I had of G & the 3 B's would have sufficed. This hasn't added anything special for us.

4 out of 5 stars Cute.......2007-06-19

Cute book, slightly different than the traditional story but pretty close. My [...] constantly remarks on the fact that the "baby bear" in the story she is used to is called "Little Wee Bear" in this book but she still loves it.

5 out of 5 stars Winner!.......2007-05-21

I gave this book to my grandaughter at her [...]birthday party and it stopped the show. She and her cousins, [..] had been opening toys and clothes one after the other, hardly glancing at any of them. When she opened this book and they started looking at the beautiful pages, they had to go through the entire book and look at each one! Here's a photo of the opening: [...]

5 out of 5 stars Another Mark Buehner classic.......2007-03-31

The beauty of this rendition of Goldilocks & the 3 Bears is Mark Buehner's illustrations. Always gorgeous, with an I Spy type of hidden animals in each painting, Mark Buehner allows my children to explore the pictures and the text at the same time. While the book is excellent, Mark and Caralyn Buehner have set a high mark. Not as innovative as Superdog and Snowman at Night, but fascinating all the same. I can't wait for the next Mark Buehner book to explore. The text by Caralyn Buehner is serviceable, but lacks the complexities of Fanny's Dream or the rhyming sequences of the Snowmen books.

5 out of 5 stars Same story, but retold so much better!.......2007-03-08

Everyone knows the story of little Goldilocks and the Three bears and this is basically the same story but with a lot more added to it! It shows where the bear family have gone while waiting for the hot morning breakfast to cool. Our curious and make yourself at home Goldilocks is skipping rope and looking for a friend to skip with. Up to the door she hops, knocks and no one answers. She's not giving up without 1 more knock and the door opens... and in she hops and so begins our story.

What I like about this book is that the basic story we all grew up with an knew is still there but the author added more elements to this story. For example... when it comes to the beds... Papa's isn't hard... it's rock hard, and mama bear's bed is silky soft and Goldilocks slides off the bed and of course Wee bear bed is the best of all. And without ruining any more of the book I'll end my review here. This is just an enjoyable book with great illustrations!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!! Better than the traditional version!.......2007-07-28

This may be my favorite JATS fairy tale. The ending is a nice twist where Goldilocks learns an appropriate lesson without any scary consequences for breaking & entering the bears' cottage.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-06-06

I really liked this book for my children! The drawings are beautiful and I loved that the bears made Goldilocks clean up her mess and then they walked her home. I highly recommend this and am buying a second copy for my son's class.

4 out of 5 stars Adorable adaptation.......2007-03-19

The drawings in this re-telling of the Goldilocks story are so cute! My 2-year-old daughter has really enjoyed the Jump At the Sun versions of fairy tales, and I'm grateful for stories with characters that look like her.

5 out of 5 stars Jump at the Sun: Goldilocks and the Three Bears.......2007-03-15

This is a lovely book for a preschool aged child. It was very clever how the writer made the name Goldilocks applicable to a child of color. It has an underlying message that a child should obey their parents and be willing to do their chores.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2004-10-31

This is a great book for all children especially children of color. My 4 year and 7 year old enjoy the story. It's a classic book modified to show respect and responsibilty.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Goldilocks.......2003-03-21

My toddler loves reading "Ricitos de Oro," and now "reads" it to herself using the different voices of the bears. The translation isn't perfect, but it is a nice simple story. As she is getting older, she is curious to hear the story in English and Spanish, so it is nice to have both versions on the same page.

3 out of 5 stars Reply to incorrect translation.......2001-12-12

I just read a review of this book saying that "high" was incorrectly translated to "dura" and "low" to "blanda". I have this book and noticed that the author does not use high and low to describe the chairs in English but uses "hard" and "soft", which are translated correctly to Spanish using the adjectives "dura" and "blanda".

This book retells the classic story with few differences from the classic story many of us grew up with. The illustrations are a little boring and don't stand out.

4 out of 5 stars My 3 year old calls it E-Locks.......1999-11-24

My 3 year old asks me to read this over and over again. He loves to here the voices of the respective bears Mama, Papa or Baby bear. It is concisely written and easy for someone with a moderate understanding of Spanish to read. My only criticism is that part of the translation is incorrect. "High" is translated as "dura". and "low" is translated as "blanda". These translations are both incorrect.
