Laid Off or Fired, You Need Help to Make Money.......2006-06-23
If You are Laid Off or Redundant you need ideas to Make Money. First negotiate the best package or payoff from work. Second, how to make money from home for your future. This book does not go into a lot of details on how to start a business, probably the most likely options if you are laid off over 40.
Essential information helpfully presented.......2002-09-11
The problem is that when we have a job we tend to invest in the illusion of security. We also feel disloyal to our employer if we prepare for the time of separation.
The funny thing is that when the whack comes (and to often it is as unforseen as club to the back of the head) you can bet that the company has prepared very carefully every aspect of our severance package before they apply that hit to the sweet spot on your noggin.
Very few people have the clout to get an employment contract let alone negotiate up front for a separation arrangement. For most of us we live in an "at will" world. The author points out that this "at will" isn't necessarily as once sided as our employers would have us believe.
They rely on the shock of the moment, our lack of preparation, and our shame for losing our job to streamline us into signing away rights and getting the heck out of dodge. It isn't in their interests to give you time to think and prepare, and, frankly, when you are laying off 1,000 or 10,000 people you simply can't enter into separate negotiations with every one of them. However, I can tell you that in the UK employees are routinely given employment contracts as they are hired.
This is why every employee should read this book today. Prepare and think about the ever more inevitable separation. Empoyees need to be on as equal a footing with their employer as they can; given current laws and the limitations of economics. We need to have more open eyes and be less sentimental about our jobs.
This book is a great first step or two on that path. Just as profits are made when you purchase an asset (buying at the right price) - not when you sell them, the basis for your separation (which you should accept as inevitable in some non-specified future) is laid when you are hired. We need to be smarter when we go into these situations and realize the planning and, well, practiced sincerity (masked insincerity) that employers now use during hiring, throughout the term of employment and during termination.
They aren't bad people, necessarily, it is just that they are prepared for what is happeneing and most employees are not. The message of this very helpful book is "Get Prepared!".
It isn't that they are all bad people; it is the nature of the current business and legal climate that leads to much of this nonsense.
This book will provide a great morale booster and provide some thoughts that can help even a newly terminated employee create a decent plan of counter-attack. Better to use this information and take positive action than be pushed downstream like so many cut trees.
Shipping was Delayed!.......2002-04-03
I would have rated this book, but unfortunately, I was not shipped the order as promised. Maybe in a couple of months I will be able to offer better feedback.
"Now I know what to do, and how to do it.".......2000-10-17
Before I came across Mr. Sklover's book, I didn't know where to begin, or what had to be done. It was recommended to me by a friend who used it to help her, and it did. This book starts off slowly, and proceeds step by step in leading you through the process of Going Back, Asking for More, and Getting It..In Writing. It is the book on this subject that I believe will be the book everyone will read, use and keep...for the next time.
A Great Resource Book.......2000-10-16
Written in plain English. Deals with the legal basics, emotional scars, and what's reasonable to ask for. Even has a list of 101 things to possibly ask for. I needed these things very much, and found them in this book. Provides a good insight, too, into what negotiating with your ex-boss, and Human Resources, is all about. I never realized that they wanted something from me even more than I needed the extra severance from them! This book is highly motivating, too. I recommend it for anyone.

Customer Reviews:
Know your rights!, and use them........2005-12-27
Too many people are completely ignorant of their rights in general. Employment law is no different. This book is not about how to be a good employee and not get fired, it's not about office politics, it's not there to hold your hand through that tough time. It is a book about knowing and exercising your legal rights as an employee. Learn how to protect yourself at work before you even get the job. I highly reccomend this book.
GOT RIPPED!.......2005-06-25
The book was a great read for employment law; but when you think you have a case based on what you read in this book and get to the office and are charged $250 for consultation (1/2 hour)as he takes calls while meeting you, you start to feel a bit ripped off. All the info in the book that I thought made a case meant absolutely nothing when I went to meet this lawyer at his office. Before you consult, buy and read a couple of other books and get as much free consul as you can if at all possible...
A helpful book at the right time for my career..........2004-10-15
As a successful college football coordinator, I realize that my job is always under public scrutiny. Regardless of the fact that I, and the team, am highly successful and that we make our yearly trip to the Holiday Bowl, there is always the outside chance that people are not satisfied with my performance. With my ability to scheme. With my ability to adjust during a game. With my ability to develop talent. With my ability to utilize talent. But I digress.
The previous review noted that the book was only good if you are planning to sue. I don't see this as a negative. In fact, the threat of a lawsuit is certainly a reasonable way to maintain one's position. Also, I've discovered that it's very important to have photographs of one's superior in, shall we say, a "compromising position". I got that idea from the movie "The Firm", and it's allowed me to maintain a career track that is highly enviable.
I appreciate the advice in this book in response to getting fired, in particular the section dealing with "how to protect your pension". Why, just last year I gave my good friend Bull some advice on this very subject which turned out to be a huge help for him. He's now sitting out on his bass boat, fishing while collecting an amazing pension.
The part of this book that I disagree with is entitled "the right way to resign your position". There is no right way and no right time to do this. First, make them fire you. Screw them if they can't see your brilliance. Second, make sure you have those compromising photographs! These ensure that your boss complements you publicly, like "Greg is doing the best job in the country".
In all, this book was very helpful to me, and I plan to use many of these strategies to ensure proper compensation if I am fired. Oh, and I'll publish those pictures too. Which should serve as a reminder - never fall asleep in a strip club in Mexico if your friend has a camera! Ah ha ha ha ha ha!
Not my Bag, Baby.......2003-06-30
Only useful if you're planning to sue. Very depressing if you're searching for emotional support/help only. Do not recommend it overall. Too negative.
Emotional strength during a tough job crisis.......2001-07-20
During a restructuring phase at my company, i had the heavy feeling of not knowing if I was going to be next on the ax list. I stumbled across this book at a bookstore, not really looking for it. Reading the title, I said to myself that this is what I need right now. Very good solid stable advice from a seasoned pro in this field. Knowledge is power and this book gives you an extra kick of power.

Hands-on advice on how to deal with being fired.......2007-04-16
If you're in danger of losing your job, Richard C. Busse provides advice about how to turn things around and improve your relationships at work. If you do lose your job, he explains how to cope with termination, negotiate the best settlement and understand your rights. He answers many questions about U.S. employment laws and how they differ from state to state. We recommend this book to anyone who fears he or she may be "fired, laid-off or forced out" of a job, now or in the future. Managers, supervisors and human resource professionals will also find useful tips about legal issues and conducting performance evaluations properly, so they can avoid the risk of wrongful termination lawsuits.
Fired, Laid Off or Forced Out: .......2007-03-09
Everyone should have read this, just in case you run into one of those weight thowing around bosses. I hadn't read it when my inccident happened but i called in my Union President, after paying for 4 years worth of dues they better do something. It said to do this in the book, so i was right on it. But, there is alot of other stuff in it, that is just good to know
Anyone working should read this book.......2006-12-15
Regardless of your current employment status, one must read this book. It is excellent guide on what to do to protect one's best interests when it comes to salary negotiation for the new job, or severance negotiation when a job is lost. If you are in the rush and want to just skim the book read the tips at the end of the each chapter and that will have to determine if you need to read all of it or some of it. My advice however would be read the book cover to cover because you could only wish to have Richard Busse is your employment lawyer. If you are 40 or older you definitely want to read this book and better yet, keep it in your library for a refresher reads in the future.
Fired, Laid Off or Forced Out-A Complete Guide by Busse, Esq.......2005-05-12
This book is perfect for personnel planning. The author explains
how to document and claim your work product. In instances where
you may not be able to be continuously employed, Busse explains:
- how to get what is coming to you in benefits, severance etc.
- how to browse the personnel file and select important documents
- hiring a lawyer in severance situations
- reading the employment agreement
- statutory requirements for paying salary owed i.e. state by state
This work is an important acquisition for employees and managers
everywhere.

Customer Reviews:
From "bummer" to "I'm back!".......2007-03-24
This is good guide for handling a career set back and positioning yourself to move forward with confidence. A mix of no-nonsense advice and practicle exercises, I found that Richardson's method added value to my situation. I STRONGLY recommend doing the exercises, especially in the chapter on moving forward. Some of it can seem a little odd (like writing a scathing letter to folks in your past job, then burning it as a form of release from the past) but they actually do help. Finding yourself in the job hunt, especially with little or no notice, is an unpleasant thing, and Richardson helps you look at the many facets of this situation and then develop your plan for moving forward to your next position.
Good place to start.......2006-02-15
As a career consultant, I'm on the lookout for books to recommend to my clients. Career Comeback passes the test.
One preliminary note: The cover refers to failed business ventures, but this topic does not appear to be covered. Publishers, not authors, usually write cover copy, so we can't fault Richardson. I believe you'd have to make major adaptations to these 8 steps if your business goes south.
The most valuable information comes in the first half of the book: dealing with being fired. I agree with just about everything Richardson says. He's one of the few authors to recommend sitting down with a financial planner right after you talk to your family. His advice on dealing with an employer after being fired is very sound. And many will find the exercises useful: Review what went wrong -- in and out of your control.
So mostly I like Steps 1-4 of Richardson's 8-step program.
Step 5 ("Find out what matters to you") is a good start, but I think Richardson underestimates the degree to which we identify with our professions. "You're still the same person" strikes me as one of those irritating, useless bromides. Many of us will be branded as an "ex" for a long time and will have difficulty losing that identity, no matter how hard we try. And the experience of losing a career we love can change us in deep ways.
"One role is temporarily diminished while another moves into its place..." won't help those who identify strongly with a profession. And your other roles will be affected by job loss. Friends view you differently. You may not be able to afford the activities you enjoyed with your friends and family. Some arts organizations actually encourage high-level volunteers to resign when they no longer hold jobs.
Steps 6 and 7 - "Find your next move" and "Find your next job" -- are necessarily oversimplified because they're single chapters on topics deserving a whole book. "Go back to an old job" is possible but not likely, and you'll be in a one-down position. And downshifting to a smaller company probably won't hurt your career - but it might.
I disagree most strongly with the author's sections on testing. If you're unemployed and money is tight, skip the tests. Some of my clients have paid hundreds of dollars for tests that proved useless. At mid-career, they'll almost always show you're best qualified for the job you have. And most career tests are so unreliable they shouldn't be used for guidance. Read Annie Paul's book, The Cult of Personality, before taking out your checkbook.
The section on hiring coaches and counselors needs to be expanded. Counselors typically are trained in counseling processes and tests, not careers. Many "career coaches" have little experience with careers, except their own. Some offer expertise; others have "training" in asking questions and helping you "find the answers within you." And you have to decide if you agree with value systems like "law of attraction."
The fee range quoted for coaches and counselors is low. I think you should expect to pay a minimum of $125 - $250 for a single session, which often includes follow-ups. I do know of some coaches and counselors who offer lower fees and frankly, you get what you pay for. Packages cost less and (as the author correctly says) are more helpful.
And to choose a consultant, I would not follow Richardson's suggestion to rely on credentials. Instead, I recommend reviewing websites, brochures and other writing. Invest a few bucks in an e-book before signing up. Coaching organizations do not "verify skills" or enforce any quality control. I once tried to report an "accredited" coach's blatant unethical conduct. Both the coaching school and the ICF refused to get involved, let alone take the coach's name off their "recommended" lists.
Step 8, "back on track," is quite good, especially sections on buyer's remorse and admitting you made a mistake. I would add that a return to work, following a long break or layoff, could be the perfect time to start working with a career coach. Learn from experience and make a good first start.
Finally, I don't think we ever make a "complete comeback." We simply make progress. And, as I noted earlier, we're different. And we should always keep a safety net ready.
Despite these quibbles, I'd recommend this book to clients and website visitors who need to go from Setback to Comeback. You could do a lot worse.
Outstanding resource for anyone seeking a new position.......2004-09-01
Perhaps you were downsized out of your last job. Maybe your previous employer went belly up. Or it could be that you were in business for yourself and your company failed due to unanticipated market changes. Whatever the reason, you find yourself in the unenviable position of seeking a new way to earn a living. You may have been living paycheck to paycheck and need to find a new gig immediately. Or you may be fortunate enough to have saved a few bucks for a rainy day so you have a little time and space to work with here.
Whatever your situation, Bradley Richardson has written a book that absolutely deserves your consideration. "Career Comeback" was really the end result of the author going through just such a crisis himself. I have read a few of these books over the years and let me assure you this is clearly the best of the bunch. This book is a cornucopia of ideas and useful advice. He points out many of the useful resources all around you (family, friends, church, agencies etc.) and encourages you to make use of them. I was particularly pleased with the dozens of websites that Richardson recommends that are sure to aid the diligent job seeker in his/her search for that elusive "ideal" situation. Whether you are looking for work in the manufacturing or retail sector or are a seasoned executive who was a victim of "downsizing" this book will prove invaluable in your job search. I will be integrating much of what I have learned here into my own job search. Highly recommended.
Absolutely on target!.......2004-01-22
Richardson's advice hits home for those impacted by the severe downturn in the economy. Not a sugar coated job search guide to writing a resume, etc., etc., but a roadmap to get on with your life and manage the emotional impact of putting your career back together successfully!
Career Comeback.......2004-01-22
How refreshing to find a book that deals with how being laid off effects your entire life and the lives of those around you. So often you are led to feel that it is your fault that you were laid off, that there was something you should have done to prevent it. This book helps you to see that even though bad things happen sometimes to good people there are ways to get back on your feet through self motivation and the support of your friends and family. I highly recommend this book if you have been laid off or know of someone who is considering a new start.

Excellent.......2003-07-21
This book is an excellent help for those in any possible career transition. It can affirm your current career choice or it can motivate you to make a change in your career when you need it. It is a wonderful tool to help you explore and imagine career options you never thought you had.
Reading it and loving it!.......2002-11-18
This book is like a breath of fresh air for those looking for a new job or considering a career change. The author's ideas are truly unique as well as motivating. I wish I would have had this book years ago.
"Laid Off & Loving It" is an inspiring career motivator.......2002-06-19
Paul David Madsen nearly makes major career changes, especially entrepreneurial moves, seem easy in "Laid Off & Loving It." The book is immensely inspiring, even to an individual such as myself who recently found a gratifying new job (I found that new position following some vital guidance from Madsen). The thought-provoking vignettes in which successful professionals need to make often abrupt career moves made me start to think of what really interests me and where my strengths lie, and how I could create my own lucrative business someday.
Not only are the stories inspiring, they also offer guidance as to how everyday people can become entrepreneurs. Useful Web sites, trade associations and helpful hints abound in the book.
Additionally, "Laid Off & Loving It" is an interesting and fun read, something most people would not expect in a career transition book. No one enjoys looking for a new job or career, but Madsen inspires the reader to consider a career change more an exciting challenge than a daunting task.
A Great Read for Job Seekers Looking for a New Beginning.......2001-10-16
What a relief to find a book that recognizes the complexity of finding the career that you REALLY want. The author's approach of telling short vignettes about people in transition makes the reading fast and informative! I especially appreciated the additional websites that Madsen provided at the end of each chapter.
Readers will definitely gain new insight into their career prospects. Madsen stresses taking what you know and thinking laterally about where your knowledge can be leveraged. Each chapter provides an example of how people like you and me succeed despite unwanted or unexpected career changes.
I've worked with the author in his capacity as a job coach and have found his services invaluable. As a professional that took a six year break from corporate life to raise my kids, I had to quickly shift gears after my husband was laid off. Madsen was key to helping me get my head back in the game. He's helped me formulate a great resume, winning cover letters, and perhaps most importantly, navigate the uncertain waters of interviewing and negotiating for the benefits and salary that we need.
In this book, Madsen has done a great job of translating his 20+ years in the headhunting experience into a usable resource for job seekers.

Expanding Your Interests.......2006-11-21
40 Excuses to Get Together with the Girls goes beyond spending time with girlfriends and gives women a variety of ideas set within a number of very interesting themes. This book is for any woman who loves art, wants to watch more movies, enjoys capturing moments on film, wants to wander the earth or take on a new hobby.
The book branches out a little more than I thought it would to the areas of sensuality and eroticism. So there are areas of this book that expand beyond the suggested theme of the book and give women ideas for dating.
These items are included in the "Because I'm really a Bad Twin inside" and while there are a few entertaining ideas like celebrating junk food day, or not making your bed, the sexuality issues will need to be decided by your own comfort level and religious beliefs.
So, if you want to take things a little beyond scrapbooking, you may find yourself meeting a friend for a vacation overseas, reading poetry, learning to arrange flowers, volunteering for a good cause, having a "film review night" and running away to the spa for a pedicure with a pal.
Some of the fun themes include:
Because I've always wanted to write
Because I love the night sky
Because I want to try some new sports
Because I feel the need to create
Because I like to win
Nanci Tangeman has created a fun book for the adventurous woman or for any woman who wants to expand her interests to enhance her life or to create new avenues of expression.

Great Book Full of Good Ideas.......2006-11-21
I bought this book and actually participated in the group workshop with the author. Basically, the book provides you with ideas of all sorts of things you might want to do to improve your life/better yourself/have some fun/etc. The excuses are kind of like Girl Scout badges, so to "earn" your excuse, you choose a few of the activities listed and do those. You could probably do this on your own, but it's much more fun with a group.
I choose to do four excuses: #19 Because I'm Game for Dating, #21 Because I Need a Little Peace and Spirituality, #23 Because I Need a Weekend (or Two) and #27 Because I'm a Closet Gourmet. And then within each of those excuses, I had lots of activities I could choose to do to complete the excuse.
With the dating one, you can do this for romantic dates or just platonic get-togethers with friends, which is what I did. I had to pick a bunch of activities from the list that sounded like fun and then make dates with friends to do them. For the Peace and Spirituality excuse, I attended a service at a different faith's church, I had a reading with a psychic and I learned to meditate. For the Weekend excuse, I checked out art exhibitions, community festivals and etc. that were going on in my area over the next few months, and then went to a couple on the weekends with friends. And finally, I tried the Gourmet excuse because I love food but hate to cook. I sampled some gourmet food at local restaurants, tried some new ethnic cuisine I probably wouldn't have otherwise tried and I took a couple cooking lessons with a friend.
I loved the book and really enjoyed working on the excuses. It was a great way to try new things, and it was a lot of fun, since I did almost all of my activities with my husband or with friends. I would highly recommend the book to anyone looking to try some new things or revisit some old hobbies in the company of some good friends!

Book Description
In today's economy, job loss will likely affect each of us at some point in our careers. Layoffs used to happen only when times were tough, but even a bustling economy is no protection when positions are eliminated, plants are closed, and jobs are shipped overseas in search of even higher profit margins. A toolkit for survival and coping with unemployment, this book explains how to minimize your chances of being laid off, how to negotiate the best outcome during the severance process, and how to re-enter the job market from a position of strength. This book is as important for employers, human resource managers, and outplacement specialists as it is for employees. Just as employees need to be aware of their rights and options, employers need to understand the ramification of their actions. This book provides an understanding of the hiring and firing process from both perspectives. Issues include:
How to examine and negotiate your termination package
How to determine if you need an attorney--and how to select one
How to prove your dismissal was inappropriate or illegal
How to move from a bad job situation to a better one

For Job Hunters and Employers.......2004-02-09
I have found this book so useful that I have bought and given 5 copies as gifts! It is very practical and written to be of use in a variety of situations.
If you are looking for a job you will find this book full of excellent tips, techniques, and tools for finding a job. Plus, you will get great advice for how to make certain an acceptance offer gives you the best protection from the possibility of future job loss.
If you are well along in your career and are looking for thoughts on how to protect yourself from future job loss, this book is also for you. The chapter on how to bulletproof your career is a gem.
And, if you are an employer, this book also gives advice on how to effectively, and humanely, deal with a job cutting situation (remember, you have to be concerned about the reactions of the people who will not be losing jobs too).
My advice, buy one for yourself and a few more for your friends and relatives who can benefit from it.
Fired and Prepared to Succeed.......2004-02-09
"Fired, Laid Off, Out of a Job" offers an insightful view of employment in today's corporate environment. It concisely defines the employee and employer relationship and offers a detailed plan that any individual can utilize to improve their opportunity for continued job success. Most importantly, it provides a Do-It-Yourself guide for dealing with unemployment and ultimately maximizing your success in your future career search. This book is an excellent resource whether you are an employer, employee, or currently - out of a job.
Angry, Depressed, Confused? This book is for you!.......2004-01-08
An excellent resource to read cover-to-cover OR to scan through as you transition through your personal situation. This book is loaded with practical, legally sound and well-thought-out advice. Leaders and managers would be smart to learn a lot from this book as it provides both employer and employee perspectives. As a transitioning employee I found that copying some of the forms in the book provided a quick access to practical tools which I needed quickly to make important decisions. I just attended orientation at my new work place and I have no doubt that I jsut made a fantastic move! I intend to get copies of this book into the library of my new employer. Thank you Byron and Michael. Excellent work!
A great "toolkit" for career survival.......2003-12-20
As a recently laid off executive I found this book to be full of valuable information to help me cope with the job loss, organize an effective job search plan and be better prepared for the next job. A short review like this cannot do justice to the amount of helpful and practical information contained in the book. I highly recommend the book to any executive who has been laid off or feels at risk.
Customer Reviews:
Informs you what rights you have when you get canned.......2002-04-24
I read this book in 1999 (previous edition) and while I've not read the latest edition, this book provides as much information as possible - an attempt in bridging the gap between what you should know and "employment law". This book is no guarantee that in fighting back you will win - but it does tell you what you should know when getting canned. Far too few people truly understand their rights under employment law and big business knows it and the workforce populus in general is frequently taken advantage of because of it. If you live in an "at will" state - as an employee you have very few ways to fight back.
Read, know your rights, act and react appropriately, and stand your ground. But remember, losing your job may simply be a matter of economics or politics - good companies will treat you with dignity, bad companies will trash you - and they don't care! Remember these few maxims: 1. Sometimes HR is a four-letter word! 2. Company loyalty does not exist. 3. Plan for your retirement yourself because no one else is going to do it for you. 4. Anyone who is not management doesn't share in the profits but pays for the loss in profits. 5. Management and executives will "always win" - its a sad fact of business life.
The average employee will never see a golden parachute in their lifetime - - again.
Fired! Now What?.......2001-12-23
This was a great book to see the signs of trouble at work and whether you should fight once fired. Especially in present times, when company loyalty is gone people need this.
A surprising and terrific find.......1999-07-24
I found this book by accident while browsing at Borders. At first I thought it was only for people who had been fired. In fact, it is an invaluable set of tools for figuring out if your job is at risk and for handling any termination process so that you "win" even if losing your job. This author, whoever he is, really understands the physics of the workplace and the psychology of those on both sides of the tabel. It is a book I will re-read several times.
Buy this book very very fast........1996-05-18
In this day and age, anyone can be fired. The title of this book is a bit misleading in that it suggests that it is focused on getting back at your ex-employer. In fact, though it does a very good job on that subject, it is absolutely essential to read before anything bad happens. Great sections on how to handle the termination interview and how to negotiate severance
