Overcoming circumstances.......2007-09-29
I was given this book, it was a good read, but the information wasn't anything new, nor was it very impressive. It was a smooth reader, but almost to the point of beating a dead horse. Now, I am not putting down the work of the Cross or Jesus or the Holy Spirit or even King David. It's just the same ole story with a different author. I did find some of Max's antedotes and case histories of his own family interesting and the view of the Rainbow, that was most interesting.
Would I buy the book, no. Would I recommend someone else to buy the book? Not really. There are better books for the money.
Here are some examples: They Smell Like Sheep by Dr. Lynn Anderson
True Discipleship by Kossler, The Holiest of All by Andrew Murray, Power Filled Living by R.A. Torrey. These are just a few.
I've found when we are facing the giants, if we focus on God, Center ourself on Him, in Him and then look outside the box, so-to-speak and allow the Spirit of God to lead us to someone else that is hurting more than ourselves, God will work out our problems usually by the interaction of our neighbors.

Learning from David's Triumphs and Mistakes.......2007-09-21
Max Lucado is known for his encouraging books, and this book is no exception. Here, he studies King David, both the good and the bad, to show us how to face the giants in our lives.
The ultimate lesson is simple, when your focus is on God, giants fall. Yet he uses stories from first and second Samuel, both the good and the bad, to show us how this played out in David's life.
The book works as a biography, showing us the events in David's life as they happened. While most chapters are a self contained lesson, it does allow us to see how one event often led to another.
Obviously, we see David fighting Goliath. But we also see him hiding from Saul, his friendship with Jonathan, hiding with the enemy, keeping his promises, falling into adultery and murder with Bathsheba, and watching his own children spin out of control. From this we learn the importance of friends and family, but ultimately the importance of putting our focus on God.
Max Lucado very rarely brings anything new to the table. That's certainly the case here. There is very little I haven't heard before. But he always puts such a fresh, encouraging spin on things, I always see things in a new light. And even when admonishing us, he still does it gently.
I set this book down reluctantly when I finished. My heart was encouraged, and my focus was where it needed to be, God. If you need some help remembering where your focus needs to be, this book is for you.

As a speech pathology student who was required to take an anatomy class with this being the required text - this book was horrible. In each chapter there is sooo much missing information and holes and gaps in the information that it made learning anatomy that much harder. The only good thing about this book is that it comes with a helpful anatomy cd for the cdrom... i preferred the Netter anatomy book instead.

This book helped me to get a great grade in my class. The diagrams and illustrations are very helpful. The CD-Rom is extremely helpful since it has color illustrations and quizzes in each section. I really advise all users to utilize the CD-Rom!

This book offers a broad coverage of the underlying structures and processes of speech. Beyond a primitive stage, man is unique in his ability to convey information by using his voice. And he has developed this ability from systems designed for more vital goals (eg., respiration and nutrition). In this respect, the work by Seikel, King and Drumright proves a great resource for studying the entire apparatus involved in voice production and perception, specifically the systems of respiration (energy source), phonation (voicing), articulation and resonation filtering), mastication and deglution, hearing, and neural. Furthermore, it includes several appendices for quick access to anatomical terms, morphology of terms, muscles, sensors and nerves, and a review of pathologies affecting production of voice. What I liked the most about the book is that you are systematically guided through all the germane systems, and when pertinent, the book provides references for deeper understanding of the material. Besides, after you have read sufficient content, the book shows summaries for reinforcement of the learnt concepts. Also, there are clinical notes distributed throughout the text, with germane discussions (related processes, pathologies, etc.). And every chapter has a set of questions for assessment of your understanding (do not worry, answers are included!).
If you are concretelly focused on speech production, this book is a gold mine. They review the Source-Filter theory of speech production, and you can somewhat independently approach the excitation source and the filter ("shaping" of the source signal in the supraglottal airways). There is also an interesting discussion of the Central Control Theory and the Action Theory Model for coordinated articulation. Naturally, you will be presented a detailed list of muscles, and the qualitative effects of their contraction. Additionally, the CD-ROM includes the Anatesse software, useful for additional review of the subjects, and for self evaluation too! And finally, this is not your typical, dry textbook. On the contrary, it's a completely friendly, fun and professional intellectual product. Fully recommended.

I'm giving the same review to all the comics in this series. It's too bad that King's epoch is so monumental that this comic serialization represents only a miniscule slice but for an abridgement it is excellent and,in my opinion, they've chosen the best segment. The writing is good, the art work alone is worth the purchase of the series. The insightful essays following each segment were enlightening. The down side was the back-slapping, self-gratification-fest that ended each book. If I felt any need to know how talented each of the contributers felt the others in the group were I'd go on the internet and look it up. I'm paying for a book, not an awards dinner. bg
The Dark Tower Comic 2.......2007-04-24
This was such a cool idea, and the artwork is awesome, but I have one problem with it. I kind of feel slighted that these comics are telling the story of the 4th book. I know that the title is Gunslinger Born but I still really want to get more of the story. Maybe it could have discussed what happened between the events of the 4th and the 1st novel. I was hoping there would be more story to the Dark Tower world, and, as a Tower junkie, I was a little let down.
That said, however, the comic book looks awesome and I can't wait to keep reading.

"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed."
Those words opened the first book of Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series, and they open the chilling, richly-drawn "Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born." This opening comic introduces a younger, less cynical Roland, and the harrowing tale of how he became a true gunslinger.
It opens with the gunslinger and the man in black, endlessly pursuing and pursued across the desert, and introduces us to their timeless natures.
Then the comic takes us back many years, to when Roland of Gilead was a teenage boy learning how to be a warrior. He and a bunch of other boys are being tutored by Cort, a bondsman who knows all the fighting tricks, and is supposed to teach them to be gunslingers -- or be exiled forever.
But during his training, he accidentally stumbles on his mother Gabrielle, naked in the wizard Marten's bed. Enraged, Roland goes to Cort and challenges him, taking the ultimate risk so he can become a gunslinger... but it's a lethal battle that will take a terrible sacrifice to win.
"Gunslinger Born" is basically adapted from the flashbacks from Stephen King's "Wizard and Glass," so fans of the book will probably already be acquainted with the tragic story of Roland's past. But it's almost as striking in comic form as in book form.
Part of that comes from Jae Lee and Richard Isanove. A lot of adaptations fall flat ("Anita Blake", anyone?), but their detailed artwork gives vibrant life to the story -- sun-dried fields, ruined buildings, ominously darkened chambers, and faces that seem to be riddled with shadows. There are moments of beauty (the last pages) and others of pure ugliness like Roland's fight with Cort.
But artwork alone doesn't make a comic book good. Robin Furth and Peter David recrafted King's prose for this -- the dialogue is spare and understated, while the narration has an ironic, regretful quality, as if Roland himself were telling the readers of his story. It's even peppered with the language of this postapocalyptic world ("... set your watch and warrant on it.")
And we get to see Roland back when he was a brash young teenager, very different from the grizzled gunslinger at the start. He's strong, brave and honorable, but also very young and impatient. And we get to see other characters from his past -- his careworn father, the malignant Marten, his childhood friends, and his junkieish mother.
The first part of the "Gunslinger Born" comic series is a dark, ominous experience, and a haunting look at this classic anti-hero's past.

I collected comics as a teenager, and ten years later the reason I am back into it is because of this series! I read the Dark Tower books last year and LOVED it. If you haven't read the 7 novel series, do it! Now!
This comic is EXTREMELY well done. It's obvious those involved really care about this story. The artwork is beautiful. While I do appreciate the background and art sketches they give towards the end of each comic, I would definitely enjoy having more pages devoted to the actual story while keeping all the additional material. If you like the Dark Tower and comics, this is something you will love.

After living life for many years this book even makes more sense about the necessity of self being broken in order to be the obedient instrument God uses to accomplish His will. We pray "in Jesus name". If we believe this is proper, then the pecking order about all things belonging to the Father show we are only renters here which can easily be recognized from the attitudes of God's anointed that Edwards describes. A valuable plus by growing this insight can impact your own life with a deeper understanding of the acceptable approach to God. After reading this study it can make you more cognizant how to be a better follower of Christ, releasing us of perceived obligations that actually belongs to God alone. Our only job is to love God and do His will, anything else is vanity.

This book is an excellent book for any one that has ever been hurt through a church experience. If you have been involved in a church break up, youth pastor or asst pastor leaving, or have set under a "spear throwing " Pastor ( if you read the book you will understand). Get this book. If you work closely, to the Pastor get the book. if you will ever become a Pastor get the book. I read the entire book in one day. It is a real easy read.

This book is a revelation: very insightful and challenging, but incredibly easy to read. You'll be amazed at how easily Edwards can rock your world. I particularly recommend it to anyone who aspires to Christian leadership and, even more so, to anyone who has been burned by Christian leaders before. I first read this book coming out of a difficult situation on the mission field and this book really helped me to understand God's perspective on spiritual authority, service, humility and his own will. Actually, I wish every Christian would read it. It'll take you a few hours at most I'd guess.

I have absolutely loved this book! The book is beautiful in appearance, with David on the front, a convenient burgundy satin ribbon bookmark built in, and parchment pages, perfectly suit the wonderful content of this Bible study. It has been a great tool to use in my quiet time each morning. Each day's study is not too long, but just enough to ponder God's thoughts to me from His word and the life of David. There is also a scripture to pray each day, and room to journal. A great gift book too!

For those who already know Beth Moore, I don't need to push this book. For those of you who don't, well, you should buy this book. I made the decision to study God's Word daily, but some mornings I can't sit for 45 minutes. I am able to complete a lesson is about 20 minutes and I love them all. I come away with a better understanding of the Word and a deeper relationship with my God.

I did the Beth bible study on this same subject a few years back, and I am not going through this devotional. It is a great reflective study, even the second time around. The daily devotions are in good bite size pieces making you hungry for more.
I recommend it for those also, who may struggle with completing all the homework in her full indepth Bible studies.

I used this book for a CTUonline.edu class and have found it to be very well written. I am already familiar with how the e-commerce world works, but for those that are not, it does a great job of explaining just about everything. This is a dorky book but fun. Ignatius is such a wimp, sniveling along, brown-nosing our intelligence with less than an elementary school belief system with his white knight profiling and self-feigned cluelessness. He comes up with some sweet words once in a while which chuckle up just fine. Ignatius is a zen storyteller, performing one of those acts of `chop wood, become enlightened, chop wood. This book reads fun, yes I had to repeat myself. One has a good time enjoying the story and hoping to all ends of realty that Ignatius doesn't believe half the stuff he's writing.

David Ignatius is a man of wit, sensitivity, and excellent fancy. He did a great job of creating an update of a Great-Gatsby like novel, with some well drawn wit and sarcasm to boot. But the book stands on it's own as a fantastic and sensitive tale of romance and power. What a tremendous love story!
And yes, I did have considerable sympathy for Carl Sandburg Galvin, his Gatsby character. Candace Ridgway is cold ambition in the flesh, a Randian heroine carried to her logical conclusion. A (more) pathetic Hedda Gabbler. Facts are her pistols, and her aim is deadly and true.
This is one to cry over, ladies (and gentlemen.)

FINISHED THIS BOOK IN ONE DAY. SUCH A CHANGE FROM HIS OTHER NOVELS, WHICH I FOUND TO BE MUNDANE AND IMMATURE. ALSO WATCHED HIS VIDEO ON INTERNET REGARDING THIS NOVEL AND SENT AN E-MAIL TO HIM APPLAUDING THIS BOOK. I AM PLEASED THAT HE HAS MOVED AWAY FROM THE SPY STUFF, EVEN IF IT IS JUST THIS ONE BOOK.
Gatsby Redux for the 1990s.......2000-02-07
Since I've always admired Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby," I found "The Sun King" a startling, inventive recreation of Fitzgerald's romantic tale, updated for the 1990s. At first, I was wary--so many scenes and so much of the language seemed to come right out of "Gatsby"! Then I was intrigued by the changes in circumstances necessary to update the novel from the 1920s to the 1990s. What were the circumstances under which the two lovers met and parted? What kept them apart? How would the vastly different roles of men and women in the 1990s change their romance? What was the source of Sandy Galvin's corruption? All these questions (and many others) found more than satisfactory answers in Ignatius's novel. A new Gatsby? You bet! And it is a fascinating look at life inside the Beltway in the 1990s!
