Book Description
An inspiring book that will encourage you to take a stroll around life's back door and examine the everyday junk and waste that we trash every day.
Customer Reviews:
boring designs.......2007-09-04
None of the designs are unique enough to condone writing an entire book for them.
Making the most of junk.......2000-09-18
Overall, I thought this book had some pretty interesting home decorating ideas. I am a person that loves to use strange materials and well, junk as a source for home decor. That being the case, this may not be a good book for those with more conventional tastes. Included are how-to instructions for many of the projects that are featured. The projects appear to span a broad range of skill levels, from true craftspersons to novices like myself. A favorite project of mine is how to use soda cans to make a quite funky candelabra (sp?). This book was inspirational; however, I have not yet attempted any of the projects and expect that some of them may be more difficult that they are portrayed to be.

Recycled Doonesbury, subtitled Second Thoughts on a Gilded Age chronicles the end of the '80s, and as the decade winds down, there's a feeling that times are a changing from Malibu to Walden. Reagan gives way to Bush (though he attempts a comeback as the utterly unhinged Ron Headrest), Duke goes to work on Donald Trump's yacht, and Mike and J.J.'s marriage hits a rough spot. The strip itself rings the changes for a while, in a survey-filled parody of USA Today. More than 69 percent of Americans enjoyed it!
This volume also captures the moment when Mr. Butts springs from the tortured mind of Mike Doonesbury. Surely one of the most inspired characters ever to appear in a comic strip, Mr. Butts is a perfect example of the satirical energy that drives Doonesbury. This wisecracking tube of tobacco has burned his way into the collective unconscious of readers as successfully as any advertising mascot. Eat your heart out, Joe Camel. All this, and the return of Elvis! --Simon Leake

Book Description
Sarah Kelling/Max Bittersohn series
Sarah Kelling and her art detective husband, Max Bittersohn, have joined the rest of the Kelling clan to plan a charity auction for the senior citizens' recycling center. All goes smoothly until tea is served. What Cousin Theonia sees in the leaves causes her to hurl her antique cup against the wall. Theonia's forebodings prove correct. Before the big event, one of the Center's members is murdered and an examination of the will points the finger of suspicion at the Kellings. An irritating reporter appears and a seedy individual involved in an old family scandal reappears. Then, another corpse pops up in the gardening shed on the night of the ball. Once again, Max is enlisted in the task of bailing out the Kellings.

Book Description
Corrugated Castle. Fancy Foil Fish Mobile. Paper Bead Bangles. Braided Rag Coasters. Old Shoe Flower Pots. Puppy Dog Sock Puppet. With a little imagination, just about anything we think of as trash can be transformed into an art project good enough to give as a gift or to keep and treasure yourself.
In her first Storey Kids book, Nature's Art Box, master crafter Laura C. Martin showed kids how pebbles, twigs, seedpods, and shells can be turned into things of beauty. Now, in Recycled Crafts Box, she uses as her art supplies the paper, plastic, metal, and cloth we usually consign to the recycling bin or the garbage can.
The way Martin sees it, just about everything around us holds artistic possibilities. Plastic picnic plates can be cut up to make a bouquet of flowers that will never wilt (and don't need watering). Roll leftover gift wrap into tight tubes and cut it into small sections to make one of- a-kind beads. Decorate the sides of old paint cans with acrylic paint and tie sturdy rope to the handles to make a pair of stilts.
Along the way, Martin offers sidebars on the history of rubbish and profiles of artists whose medium is junk. She passes along important lessons about being a good steward of the Earth. But the lessons are light and fun--never preachy.
Fun for kids, perfect for involved and homeschooling parents, and ideal for schoolteachers who have seen their art supply budgets slashed, Recycled Crafts Box shows budding artists how to make something beautiful and save the planet at the same time.
Customer Reviews:
A delightful resource for rainy-day fun.......2004-11-06
Laura Martin's Recycled Crafts Box is a compilation of forty ecologically-friendly projects and activities that can be done cheaply from old things, from crafting sock puppets and cardboard castles to rag coasters and colorful picnic plate flowers. A delightful resource for rainy-day fun, artistic stimulation, and stimulating quality time to be shared with young ones. Also a highly recommended creative diversion, especially as an alternative to the ever-present press of television and other passive media.

Whether it is a dustpan made out of a license plate, a bowl fashioned from a bent vinyl record, a pair of sandals with soles made of Goodyear tire treads, or a tin-can lantern, folk artists all over the world are turning trash into treasure. Their found and recycled materials are reincarnated to create clothing, jewelry, toys, artworks, and useful household objects, such as a measuring scale made of two sardine cans. Focusing on the folk art practices of several cultures, this book is a celebration of the transformative genius of these artists, as well as an exploration of the diverse environments--from Ecuador and Mexico to Senegal and the U.S.--in which they live and work.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, broad approach to the subject........1999-02-13
A very informative book with a good mix of visual and written information. Great to find a book on recycling that goes beyond "101 things to do with a toilet roll"! A very good starting point if you are interested in crafts and objects made from salvaged materials with a "majority" world bias. Good for dipping into and reading right through.Of interest to a wide age group, art and craft practitioners/students or armchair travellers.

Flea Market Finds: Before and After (Leisure Arts #15916)
ASIN: 0821228617 |
Book Description
An attractive step-by-step guide to turning old flea-market finds and other inexpensive diamonds in the rough into stylish furnishings for the porch, deck, or garden. Flea markets, garage sales, thrift stores, and even big discount operations can be treasure troves for the eclectic home decorator. With a little creativity, inexpensive castoffs and bargain furniture can be turned into charming and stylish furnishings for your favorite outdoor living spaces. Crafting expert BJ Berti identifies such diamonds-in-the-rough and gives them new life. FLEA MARKET MAKEOVERS FOR THE OUTDOORS features complete step-by-step instructions and photos for 25 projects, from the simple task of embellishing a plain tablecloth or making planters from old galvanized buckets, to more complex projects like applying floral dcoupage to an old table or creating gorgeous and inexpensive outdoor lighting by recycling a chandelier into a decorative candelabra.
Customer Reviews:
ho hum. just was not for me........2007-02-17
Nothing out of the ordinary...sorry! Might be OK for someone with very little imagination, but for the artistic, or creative at heart, nope.
Pretty, Feminine Projects for Flea Market Finds--Too "Pretty" For Me.......2006-06-13
Each of the pages of this book contains detailed instructions for creating something new and fresh-looking from a flea market or yard sale find. With few exceptions, I found the finished look of the projects to be very feminine--polka-dot painted glasses and trays, pastel painted wood and metal furniture, floral decoupage, gilded metal, tile mosaics, fleur-de-lis stenciled screens, etc. Gone was the chippy paint, rust and old wood that I cherish. The thrift-store metal tray project which gave directions for applying spray paint over beautiful, aged silver-plated trays broke my heart! The end result was summer-colored polka dots that you would find in most dollar stores. The best thing about the book is the detail of the instructions for cleaning, restoring and refinishing. One could easily follow these instructions using the materials of their choice. I would have preferred to see the metal-and-mosaic table made from broken bits of old china vs. new tiles or the porch swing distressed in a soft white instead of being painted with sea blue and green stripes. I did really like the antique wooden trellis (probably because the wood was left in it's aged state) and the rustic hanging planter made from a corn-seed planter (again, left in it's state of demise). I think this book is worth adding to your home library if you can find it at a bargain price as I did. I would check it out of the library before I paid full price.
Flea Market Makeovers for the Outdoors.......2005-10-04
The condition of the book exceeded my expectations and I received it promptly as indicated. I will most definitely look to order from you again. Thanks
Great Project Ideas.......2005-08-12
This book is wonderful. I have used several ideas and have others in the works. The directions are easy to follow. The items shown are not difficulty to come across in small town tag sales or flea markets.
A Beautiful and Practical Book.......2004-06-30
So often, magazine articles on this subject assume that you have found an amazing work of art at the flea market. Probably all of us could figure out how to make good use of a charming Roseville vase without much guidance. Berti's book tells you how wo make good use of things like old wool sweaters, metal trays, and rusty lawn furniture -- things you might easily find or have around the house (garage?) already.
Articles on this subject also frequently give you directions like "refinish an old X" or "reupholster a discarded Y". Berti's book gives step-by-step directions with large, clear color photographs. There are materials lists at the beginning of each project and suggestions for using different kinds of items.
Projects range from the very simple (using old glassware for candles) to the very complex (building a wooden cabinet). Skills involved include needlework, woodworking, mosaic, gardening, and more. No expertise is assumed, and there are basic instructions and techniques for all the projects.
The finished pieces are attractive and the photographs are very appealing, but the book is clearly designed to allow readers to use their own tastes -- and their own flea market finds -- to make their own one-of-a-kind pieces. Whether you want to refurbish and repair older outdoor furniture, create elegant handmade pieces, or follow the shabby-chic style, this book will help you do it.

Book Description
Recycle The Essential Guide is the indispensable handbook to recycling today. With vibrant visuals and a clear, accessible layout, the book is an invaluable resource that tackles everything from the urgency of resource depletion on a global scale to what the individual reader can do to reduce waste in their own home. Beginning with a witty, thought provoking introduction by renowned journalist, Lucy Siegle, Recycle includes detailed sections on recyclable materials and what the individual reader can do to facilitate the recycling process. Case studies from all over the world pay tribute to exceptionally successful or innovative approaches to recycling and a consumer directory of eco designers proves that ethical living and trendiness don't necessarily contradict each other. Recycle also includes a comprehensive international directory, that points readers in the direction of organisations and charities that can help them to take further steps towards waste reduction.

Great Book for Recycled Crafts!.......2007-09-02
I LOVE the Creative Juice show so I picked up this book and I really liked it. I am working on the bottlecap jewelry! :)
Creative Juice Offers Great Ideas for the Beginner and Veteran Crafter .......2007-06-19
I am truly a fan of the Creative Juice TV Show and am just wowed over by the book. The pictures are fantastic and the instructions are clear enough for the beginner. The way Cathie and Steve take objects and recraft them into pieces of art, play, etc. amazes me, a veteran crafter. I love the chapters with kids ideas and easy to make jewelery. I will put them to use very soon as my grand daughters are coming to spend some of the summer with me. I have downloaded directions to many of the Creative Juice projects and now it is so great to have great color photos of the how-to's. Anyone who likes to craft or wants to begin to craft needs to buy this book!!!!!!
