And the story continues.......2007-04-22
Warning: Thar be spoilers ahead!
Remember each week those exciting words (which alerted us that we were about to get a new exciting episode of the best show on TV)? "Previously on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER . . . " The new comic series seems to be doing something along these same lines. On the inside of the outer cover are printed the following:
"This story takes place after the end of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Season Seven.
"The Slayer population of the world has gone from two to nearly two thousand. Almost five hundred are working around the world with Buffy's organization in squads--or "terrorist cells," according to the American military. Buffy, Xander, Dawn, and a passel of Slayers are currently bunked out in a Scottish castle, where the latest mission revealed a strange symbol carved into human bodies.
"Also, Dawn's a giant."
This may be a summary that is rewritten each month to reflect what has happened in the previous issues.
The first episode in Season Eight established the situation; this one begins moving the story forward. The U.S. military (or rather, a military leader who has on his chest the strange symbol referred to in the monthly summary) has authorized Amy the witch and her army of zombies to go after Buffy and her cohorts. After the story begins with three very different approaches to training the new slayers by first Giles, then Buffy, and finally Andrew (who actually couldn't be said to be training them at all) we find Xander explaining why Dawn took the form of a giant when it was possible she could have assumed other forms instead (obviously, she is trying to get her sister's attention in the most blatant manner possible). The catch is, does Xander really tell any of this to Buffy or is it all just part of what we later learn is a spell-induced sleep in which she experiences an unbroken nightmare. And in a fairy-tale twist she can only be awakened by the kiss of true love. We can, of course, imagine a line of possible candidates for that: Angel and Spike fighting to be first in line. Well, of course Buffy will be awakened, and sooner rather than later. Can't imagine her being asleep at the end of the next episode. The tricky part is how one defines "true love." That needn't mean romantic love. My gut tells me that the kiss won't come from any of the usual suspects. My money is on Dawn. Yeah, I know. No one likes Dawn. But the brute fact is that except for struggling to save her in Season Five, Buffy has been a truly awful sister. Not in a Cinderella step sisterly way, but in the completely neglectful, can't-spare-her-a-minute way. But early in Season Six, Dawn seemed to miss her more than anyone. Like I said, my money is on Dawn.
The issues ends with Buffy asleep, the castle under assault by hundreds of zombies they can't keep at bay, Amy gloating that she could handle slayers with ease, so there was no one there who could take her on. The final frame is of someone who says that they would "like to test that theory." And thus Willow makes her first appearance in the story.
I am going to say something that I don't think I can say often enough. I don't want Joss Whedon writing comics. I want him creating new television shows. I suspect he enjoys the control that a comic gives him. I am sure he is tired of battling studios and networks. I can understand that. But once the battles have been waged and the BS has been waded through, Joss Whedon has been able to create some of the most extraordinary, most timeless television that has ever been made. He needs to get back to it. That being said, I am so much happier with him doing BUFFY Season Eight than either his X-Men project or the Runaways (and mind you, I like both the X-Men and the Runaways). There are others who can tell further stories about the X-Men and the Runaways, but Joss Whedon is only one who can give us authoritative Buffy stories. So I am acquiring these with joy and my heart and impatience in my soul. But I want him back in television. We've had some great TV since BUFFY and ANGEL left the air. LOST, 24, VERONICA MARS, and especially BATTLESTAR GALACTICA have filled the huge gap BUFFY left at its departure. But LOST needs to start winding down (whether it will has to be seen), BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (the only show to completely match the brilliance that was BUFFY) has possibly only one more season left and at most two before Ron Moore brings his series to an end. 24 is definitely in decline. VERONICA MARS might be cancelled. In short, JOSS! WE NEED YOU TO COME BACK TO TELEVISION! But in the meantime, I'll wolf down every one of these issues.
Episode Two: Attack of the Rat.......2007-04-05
Buffy fans will be expecting a lot after seven stellar seasons on television and the success of the first issue of "Season Eight." So the question here is this: Does Issue #2 deliver?
In short, yes. I have to say though--there is so much going on, so many jokes, and so much foreshadowing that I wasn't able to completely enjoy the Jossy goodness until my second read. The first read intrigued me, but the second wow-ed me.
The plot continues directly from the previous issue. Amy (the former rat) is working with the government to take out Buffy and the slayers, and she has an army of zombies to back her up. The ending sequences are amazing--I'm already itching for May 2nd to come so I can get my hands on the third issue. There was a big revelation about half-way through the comic, and clues to who the Big Bad of the season will be as well. Giant Dawn is great, Buffy is true to herself, and Xander is playing the biggest role he's played since the first season.
This issue also re-introduces two fan favorites: Giles and Andrew. So, all in all, this issue is just as good as the first. But did anybody expect anything less? I mean, come on--Joss Whedon wrote it.

Customer Reviews:
Great collection.......2007-06-21
Even though most of the Annual issues collected in the Ultimate Annuals trade paperbacks will likely appear in the trades/hardcovers of their respective titles, I still think collecting them in one book is a neat idea, especially for those who don't read the entire Ultimate Marvel line. Here's what you get in volume 1:
Ultimate Fantastic Four Annual #1 - The introduction of the Ultimate Inhumans! Fans of the Paul Jenkins/Jae Lee Inhumans limited series will no doubt rejoice to see Lee rendering these characters again. It's a great, if abrupt, introduction to the characters and it practically screams for at least an Ultimate Inhumans limited series.
Ultimate X-Men Annual #1 - Gambit and Rogue return, and so does the Juggernaut. Not everyone is walking away from this one! Tom Raney's artwork is the highlight of this issue.
Ultimate Spider-Man Annual #1 is a light-hearted tale focusing on the budding relationship between Peter Parker and the X-Men's Kitty Pryde. It's fun, but forgettable.
Ultimates Annual #1 is the best of the bunch, showing us exactly what Nick Fury has in the works in case his premiere super-team is out of the picture. It's particularly interesting in that it introduces some fairly compelling secondary characters as well as reminding us just how little we really know about the way Nick Fury's mind works. It's exactly the kind of story I'd expect from Mark Millar.
If you already collect the trades of each Ultimate Marvel title, you may want to skip this collection. If not, then it is definitely worth checking out. It would also serve as an ideal introduction to anyone unfamiliar with the Ultimate Marvel Universe, as it gives a nice preview of each title in one inexpensive volume.
Ultimate Annuals = Worth the Time and Money.......2007-06-16
There used to be a time, not so long ago, when comics released annuals once per year (hence the name "annual"). The pagecounts were bigger, the prices higher, and the stories often felt like they were outside of the continuity of the regular series that they were released with. Along with all of that, fans were usually treated to a fill-in artist and writer...ugh.
Thankfully, that's not the case with the first round of Ultimate annuals. Each of these stories, although standing on their own, are important pieces of their respective series (the Fantastic Four annual was even collected in the Ultimate FF hardcover Vol. 1). The X-Men's Kitty Pryde hooks up with Peter Parker, the Inhumans clash with the FF, the Ultimates reserves are introduced, and Rogue and Gambit's affair comes to an abrupt end.
Collects Ultimates Annual #1; Ultimate Fantastic Four Annual #1; Ultimate X-Men Annual #1; Ultimate Spider-Man Annual #1.
4 Stand Alone Stories That Are Entertaining.......2006-03-11
Since I'm a comic newbie, I don't know what the purpose of a an "Annual" is, and I would be very surprised if these issues weren't included in the trade paperbacks for their respective series (after all, they are very relevant to the plots of the different books).
In the Ultimates Annual, we get a better look at the Reserves team that is in place to serve if any of the main Ultimates fail. The book also serves as a great character study of Gen. Nick Fury. Overall, I'm not sure how much relevance this issue will have in the overall storyline of The Ultimates, but it does provide a lot of interesting side details.
In the Ultimate Spider-Man annual, Peter Parker begins dating Kitty Pryde of the Ultimate X-Men. Each has just ended their own respective relationships (Spidey with Mary Jane Watson and Kitty with Bobby Drake/Iceman), and each of them are going through similar emotional arcs. While the book doesn't have too much action, the drama is good, the dialogue is hilarious, and it sets up the relationship that is currently on-going in Ultimate Spider-Man.
In the Ultimate X-Men annual, we get a glimpse at what Gambit and Rogue are up to. While in Vegas, the two are pulling heists, but things get complicated when Juggernaut shows up to try to reclaim Rogue as his own. This book pleasantly surprised me, because the only other Ultimate X-Men stuff I've read is Ultimate War, which I found very disappointing (but apparently, the Ultimate X-Men is a pretty good book, especially the Millar issues).
I didn't get very far into the Ultimate Fantastic Four annual, because I know very little about that team, whether it is the Ultimate or 616 version, and I had a hard time following the story.
Overall, this is a good addition to your collection IF you are a fan of one of the four books contained within or just a fan of the Ultimate universe in general (while I prefer the 616 universe, I'm finding that the Ultimate universe does have its strengths, especially The Ultimates).
Okay, but not great comicbook fare.......2006-01-30
This book collects four annual editions of Marvel's popular "Ultimate" series, the Fantastic Four annual, one of the X-Men, Spider-Man and an Ultimates adventure centered around the revamped Nick Fury. Mostly these stories are disappointing, particularly considering the high quality that the "Ultimates" books have maintained thus far. These seemed like standard annual-quality fare -- slightly longer stories that mostly stand separate from the regular series, and seems a little disconnected. The FF story has stylish art, but a kind of choppy story, wherein the FF meet the Inhumans. (This story is also reprinted in a new UFF paperback, so you may wind up paying for it twice...) Both the Ultimates and Xmen stories were mediocre -- although the X-story has the redeeming feature that Gambit gets killed... (Yay! Finally!!) The highlight of this collection is the Spidey annual in which Brian Bendis' teenage, hormonal Peter Parker has a sweet, shy date with Kitty Pryde, of the Xmen... The awkwardness between the two teens is well portrayed and kind of sweet... plus it's fun to see two of Marvel's most interesting teen-brainiacs hook up. Overall, this collection is okay, but there's better stuff out there.
I'd give it a 3.5, if I could.

It's Readable, but not much else.......1998-11-26
Well Onslaught will perhaps forever be Marvel's most controversial storyline. I only gave this chapter three stars because it focuses on the Hulk's side of the war with the mad mutant. Peter David tried as much as he could, to make the Hulk chapter of the Onslaught war, interesting and he mostly succeeds. The Hulk takes part in the battle, but he somewhat regards this whole affair as a waste of his time. I wonder if that's how Peter thought of it too?

Customer Reviews:
Probably the worst .......2006-09-17
I have read everything in the Ultimate line so far, including the dreadful Hawk Owl and Woody. This collection is a low point for the Ultimate line. The story isn't great, the art is sub par, and it is basically just 2 issues collected with the Ultimate Handbook thrown in to fatten it up enough to make a trade paperback. I did like the informative handbook of all the characters that have appeared so far in the Ultimate universe. The 2 comic issues were just way below what you would expect. I collect the Ultimate line because they use top writers and artists. More dreck like this and I will start looking elsewhere for a good story.
Bleh.......2006-09-11
This was a low point for the Ultimate line. The characters don't mesh well, and the selection of X-Men to pair against the FF seems alomost arbitrary (let's see, we definately need Wolveriene, let's just tack on Ice-man so we'll have that fire/ice angle with the human torch, and toss in Kitty, because phasing and invisibility complement each other so well, she'll attomaticly get along with Susan Storm).
They didn't think to use nightcrawler, who would have gotten along well with the thing because of the hideous appearence problem, and a little guy teleporting the Thing around would have been cool.
The villain is defeated in a way that made me feel cheated, as there was no real fight, just an I gotcha moment on the part of Reed Richards, who has no X-man counter part in this story (I can only assume that if Beast was still alive he would have been it, but oh well).
Even the super fight between the two teams is just pitiful, as the X-men are just pounded as they walk headlong right into a more powerful and more numerous group (with their biggest gun Wolveriene still shaken from his last fight).
At parts this is just idiotic, and it always seems rushed. Bad book.
Ultimate Handbook plus Ultimate Waste of a Half Hour of Your Life.......2006-09-02
This book really only has one part to warrant it's purchase, the handbooks in the back offer story's and statistics to every major character to grace the ultimate universe. Its basically like the marvel encyclopedia but for the ultimate universe and offers great art and backgrounds that any Ultimate fan would be interested in reading about.
The story of the book however is very lacking. I'm not entirely sure it should be called Ultimate X-Men and Fantastic Four since it only involves a fraction of the X-Men's team. The writing is nowhere near on par with that of either series and the art is at time terrible and others...acceptable. The only real reason to check out the story is so you can check out the new characters introduced to the marvel universe, but I must admit its a shame that Caliban was changed into some sort of machine with no emotions as emotion had such a large part in his original character.
Simply put if you like the Marvel handbooks your going to want to pick this up but if your looking for a good story with the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, keep looking.
Surprisingly good.......2006-07-03
I wasnt expecting anything worthy when i picked up this trade paperback. the concept sounded pretty lame for a teaming up, and it was only about 2 individual comic books long. however the plot was actually much better than i had thought it would be, and the characters were more true to their original marvel universe personalities. wolverine has no problem gutting the thinker's creature as well as rigging her escape vehicle to explode in midair. as for the thinker, she was drawn much more humane than her first appearance in UltimateFFvol.4, which was a terrible volume. the best thing about this tpb however is the official ultimate marvel handbook in the back. while it lacks a few characters who have not made many appearances yet, it's essentail in refreshing the memory with some material which may have long been forgotten. due to it's small amount of actual comic book reading, it gets a 3. however it's a necessary and interesting read from the ultimate universe, and the price isnt bad either.

FINISHES Bishop's Plot!!! This was why Bishop went back in time!!!
This was very bad writing.......1999-07-02
It really was. The whole idea of Professor X going mad clearly came from Bob Harras, not Lobdell, and if you're editor in cheif at the company you can do anything you want, even if it only succeeds in angering more readers then it actually attracts. Another story like this one, and there won't be a Marvel Universe anymore.
Keepin' Up the pace..........1999-02-26
I've just a few things to say of this book. Superb. It keeps the pace, but, nevertheless, it asounds me how much suspense you can go through with all that going on. 'WillNate & franklin get out?' or, simply 'How's it all going to end out?' or even 'Won't hate for mutants rise again?'. I consider this to be the best chapter of the 6, although, all are worth reading. In closing, I have to say, The watcher's presence add's a touch of finesse, and Apocolypse's statement brings me to believe that he'll have something up his sleeve, and could pop up anytime (but I have a feeling it will be in Cable between '99-2000).
Spider-Man enters the Onslaught war.......1998-12-11
Well this chapter of the Onslaught war sees Spider-Man, the Punisher, and the good Green Goblin trying to save New York city from a fleet of Sentinels which Onslaught has send to control the city. But the heroes are badly choosen for the task here. Spidey can only do so much aganist the Sentinels, the Green Goblin is knocked out of action, and the Punisher has to rescue Shield agents from a downed heli-carrier. It would have been more intresting if Nick Fury and Dr. Strange had led the charge against the sentinels on the Front Line, but they were never used for this story and it's a shame.
Disapointing.......1998-11-10
Here it is the final battle against Onslaught. A lot of Marvel heroes gather to destroy the villian and the result is the most boring climax ever put in a comic book story. Marvel's "Secret Wars" saga was better then this. I hope we never see a return of Onslaught.

Great Mr. Sinister Writing!.......2006-03-13
Mr Sinister is Evil, I admit, BUT here he is at least shown more 3-D. Great Work Marvel!
No Character Development.......1998-12-12
Well here we are in the next round of the Onslaught war with the mutant monster taking on X-Man and X-Force, with Mr. Sinister waiting to pick up the pieces of who survives. Nothing much interesting happens in this story. At the end, Onslaught is growing more powerful and neither X-Man or X-Force have the power to stop him. Now if they had Godzilla appear in this book and he battled Onslaught, he could have destroyed Onslaught right there and we would have been spared the rest of this awful tale.

Unbelievably bad, avoid.......2005-10-04
It's a wonder why Marvel keeps giving Akira Yoshida work. Besides his travesty "re-working" of the classic X-Men Age of Apocalypse storyline, Yoshida scripted this team up of the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. Apparently, there's trouble in space with the Brood, and the FF need the X-Men's help to deal with it, resulting in a space trip with the Thing, Invisible Woman, Wolverine, Emma Frost, Nightcrawler, and Gambit in tow. Upon re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, the four X-Men are transformed with new powers similar to that of the FF, and they all begin to go insane. The plot is non-existant enough, but Yoshida's dialogue is atrocious. Beloved characters like Nightcrawler and Gambit either become annoying or don't say much at all, while the art by Pat Lee and the bankrupt Dreamwave Studios (that's another story) is overrated to say the least. The characters look clunky and sloppyily designed, but I've never been much of a fan of Lee's, so others may dig it. All in all, X-Men/Fantastic Four isn't even worth checking out for fans of either team book, and this is much better left on the shelf.
Great book, too bad it's come at such a bad time..........2005-08-06
Well, this is a great book like my title says but, it's come at a really bad time when Pat Lee is the hot topic amid accusations of scandal and the bankruptcy of his once prominent company Dreamwave. As many people already know, there's quite a bit of problems going on between Pat Lee and his former Dreamwave staff members and freelancers and it's a shame that this book has come out at such a time, possibly hurting the integrity of this book. The storyline is typical action fare and makes for a great vehicle for Pat Lee's artwork, showing off both the FF and the X-Men in a very cool anime inspired style. The storyline, although pretty short and to the point, has some pretty cool twists. The FF and the X-Men choose six members out of the group to investigate the explosion at the Simulacra space station which has rendered communication inert and left the fate of the crew of the station and the Mars lander in question. White Queen, Nightcrawler, Gambit, the Thing, the Invisible Woman and Wolverine travel to the space station where they are attacked by the alien Brood. The Brood attempt to invade Earth and take over all life. But, Reed Richards makes what could be a fatal error in sending the crew to the space station when a cosmic storm of the same nature that gave the Fantastic Four their powers to begin with, ends up wreaking havoc in the vicinity of the space station. During the group's attempted escape of the station in a Shi-Ar enhanced Blackbird X-Jet, the four members of the X-Men are given the powers of the Fantastic Four on top of their original powers and driven temporarily mad, leaving the remaining members Cyclops, Storm, Human Torch, Invisible Woman, Thing, Mr. Fantastic and Beast to fight off Wolverine (given the powers of Mr. Fantastic), Nightcrawler (given the powers of the Invisible Woman), Gambit (given the powers of the Human Torch) and White Queen (given the powers of the Thing) all the while fighting off the Brood invasion. All in all, a cool book with some nice (if a bit sloppy) artwork and a fun action story that involves some of the coolest marvel characters around.
BOYCOT THIS BOOK!`.......2005-07-30
Pat Lee should be boycotted for what he did to the men and women who worked for him under Dreamwave. As a fan of the writers and artists who worked hard for that company, I am disgusted that he would leave so many of them unpaid for months on end.
