1 out of 5 stars Waste money.......2006-11-10

I bought this book few days ago. I finished reading in a day. This book spent most of the time telling stories about gamblers but not the method to win a jackpot. The author does not have much experience in playing jackpot machine, he merely did some interview with real gamblers and casino employee. There is no pictures, no facts or figure to illustrate. In my opinion, It can only be consider as a easy to read book on jackpot. Do not expect to win anything after reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting reading.......2006-11-03

I found this to be extremely interesting reading, as well as entertaining and informative. I don't think any of the tips and tricks in ANY slot machine book will apply at "Indian Reservation" casinos, but this book is a must read for any fan of Jersey, Vegas, Mississippi, or other non-reservation casinos.

4 out of 5 stars Best Slots Book I've Read--Needs an Update.......2006-05-11

I am not crazy about playing slots--but to get free room at the Venetian (LV) I need to put in hours each day, each visit. The Scoblete book is the most informative overall I've read so far on a subject where random chance is the rule. The chapter about which slots are loose was probably good advice--but people don't hear coins falling into the hopper any more--coins have been replaced with paper receipts. Paper payoffs also skew the advice in that excellent chapter on money management. These days most people deposit bills, not coins, into the slot machine and there is no bucket of coins to use or to reserve. Mr. Scoblete needs to revise this book. If he still gambles, I'm sure his well-thought 1994 guidelines would benefit from updating. I would be first on line to buy the new book. The organization and research of "One-Armed Bandit" are outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Slots.......2003-12-24

I have read just about every book on slots but I resisted buying this one because I thought the information would be old and stale. Now having read it I have to agree with other reviewers that just about all slot books "borrow" heavily from Scoblete's work and are nowhere near as comprehensive. The book is a masterpiece of research and it is well written and extremely fun to read. I recommend this as the first and only slot stop you'll need before you try your hand at the one-armed bandits.

5 out of 5 stars Very funny, very enlightening, very good book.......2003-12-22

I laughed so hard at certain chapters in this book that my sides hurt. I also learned a great deal about how the slots work and their history. There are some excellent strategies in this book as well. Definitely a book worth buying.

This book was one of my sons favorites. It had a surprise ending.

5 out of 5 stars A Book Review by Jenny C. .......2006-11-02

I read a book called The Bald Bandit by Ron Roy. It's about a bandit who robs the Green Lawn Savings Bank. The three detectives (Dink, Josh, Ruth Rose) solved the mystery. When a private detective named Reddy came to look for the videotape the three detectives decided to help him. Reddy said if they found the videotape they would earn a hundred bucks.

My favorite part of the book was when Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose got the videotape and they watched the tape and they noticed it was Reddy who robbed the bank. When Reddy was at Dink's house ready to get the video, Dink hid it and gave him a tape of soccer. Ruth Rose sneaks into her house and calls the police. I think the thief was pretty smart.

I think the book was a perfect fit for me because I love reading mystery books. When I read this book at home I can't stop reading it until I finish.

5 out of 5 stars The Bald Bandit.......2006-04-19

This is one of the best books in the series. I think this is the best book. I liked this book because I like mysteries. I like the whole series but this one was the best so far.
If you like mysteries you should read the series.

Yu Watase, Fushigi Yugi: Bandit (Viz, 1992)

The fourth installment of Fushigi Yugi has Miaka and crew searching for the last three Constellations of Suzaku. We get two stories here; the first takes them into a bandit camp, the second into a town stricken by plague. As the story's ramped itself up and some of the major pieces have fallen into place, there's more focus on the action in the stories, and things are getting faster-paced and building to the first of what is likely to be a number of climaxes. A fun series, well worth your time. *** ½

5 out of 5 stars Tama-home.......2003-04-27

Ok, now taking into consideration that this book is totally great, in fact so great that i can't even tell you the 1/8th of it. So i will introduce you to tama-home he is really to-die-for, and to think, manga artists get paid to draw him all day... anyway tama-home was (and occasionally still is) always looking to make some cash, not because he is greedy, but to help his family. When he meets Miaka, a girl from today, who opens a book and goes to this other land, he is brusqe, but after she goes home for a while, (3 months) then he realizes how much he loves her, which is a good thing because miaka fell for him a bit a go...
So BUY THESE BOOKS! TAMA-HOME rules!...

5 out of 5 stars Book 4 kicks...!!!.......2002-06-26

*Out of all the manga I read from this series, I like this one the best cause of Tasuki. Tasuki is my favorite character cause, he's always sarcastic and is always ready to kick... But its all good! Fushigi Yugi is serious must have for the anime otaku (otaku- japanese word for obsessed fan).

5 out of 5 stars Yu Watase does it again.......2002-06-06

Having previously read the first three novels, I had no doubt the fourth novel would be just as good. It exceeded my expectations. The manga seems to get better and better with each volume. Personally, this is my favorite volume since the bandit Tasuki is introduced (my favorite character). Miaka continues her quest to find the remaining Suzaku Senshi and runs into all sort of trouble. I highly recommend this volume as well as the rest of the series. Money well-spent.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Graphic Novels I've Ever Read..........2002-05-25

Fushigi Yugi is about a bouncy eighth grade girl named Miaka. She's just a regular junior high school girl trying to get through exams, but one day she goes inside a restricted library and opens up a book called The Universe of the Four Gods. She gets transported inside the book and finds herself in Ancient China. She had to get out of the book, so she has to find the seven oracles. On her mission she falls in love with a handsome seventeen year old guy named Tamahome. He's caring and does the best for his family by earning as much money as possible - but at first when Miaka tells her feelings for him, he rejects her and says doesn't feel the same way.

Eventually Miaka discoveres that the beatiful emperor of Hong-Nan, Hotohori, is in love with her. By then Tamahome also discovers he had fallen in love with Miaka, so it form a love triangle. When this is all happening, Miaka is able to get in her own world...but then her best friend, Yui, who is the one who saved her gets stuck in Ancient China. A day passes by, then Miaka goes back to the restricted library to seek for Yui. She transports back into Ancient China, and she finds out a lot of bad things had happened to Yui during that time. Even though it was only a day in the present time, it was months in the other world. Yui sides with another country, and this forces them to become rivals.

This is a good book that has a mixture of romance, friendship, comedy, horror, action and adventure all in one great series. A must-read!

Book Description

In August 1942, Hitler directed all German state institutions to assist Heinrich Himmler, the chief of the SS and the German police, in eradicating armed resistance in the newly occupied territories of Eastern Europe and Russia. The directive for “combating banditry” (Bandenbekämpfung), became the third component of the Nazi regime’s three-part strategy for German national security, with genocide (Endlösung der Judenfrage, or “the Final Solution of the Jewish Question”) and slave labor (Erfassung, or “Registration of Persons to Hard Labor”) being the better-known others.

An original and thought-provoking work grounded in extensive research in German archives, Hitler’s Bandit Hunters focuses on this counterinsurgency campaign, the anvil of Hitler’s crusade for empire. Bandenbekämpfung portrayed insurgents as political and racial bandits, criminalized to a greater degree than enemies of the state; moreover, violence against them was not constrained by the prevailing laws of warfare.

Philip Blood explains how German forces embraced the Bandenbekämpfung doctrine, demonstrating the equal culpability of both the SS police forces and the “heroic” Waffen-SS combat arm and shattering the contrived postwar distinctions between them. He challenges the traditional view of Himmler as an armchair general and bureaucrat, exposing him as the driving force behind one of the most successful security campaigns in history, and delves into the contentious issue of the complicity of ordinary German police, soldiers, and citizens, as well as the citizens of occupied territories, in these state-sponsored manhunts. This book provokes new debates on the Nazi terrorization of Europe, the blind acquiescence of many, and the courageous resistance of the few.

3 out of 5 stars Dry Reading.......2007-08-22

This is a well researched book. If you desire information on the connection between ideologue and practice within the demented regime of Hitler's Third Reich, this work certainly fills the bill. It is rather dry reading. By that I mean, the flow of the information is sometimes overwhelming in detail and difficult to comprehend especially since the book lacks maps to show where the actions are taking place. The author includes a nice reference list of terms used and personalities involved. I found myself constantly checking these reference to ensure understanding. It is a labor to read and it took me well beyond the normal time I spend on a book to complete. It remains, however, the best book available on the brutality of Hitler and his followers. I left with a better appreciation of the planning and control the Germans employed to rid the conquered areas of those they considered hinderances to their dream of a new Germania. The cold blooded manner in which people and their possessions are handled brings a chill to your spine. How can human beings be so insensitive? Read the book to appreciate how man can inflict untold suffering on his fellow man without so much as a sigh of regret.

5 out of 5 stars Analyzing German anti-guerilla campaigns in Poland/Russia.......2006-12-19

One of the longstanding beliefs of World War II has been the separation between the Waffen-SS, an elite combat arm, and the SS Police Forces who are blamed for deliberate killings, concentration camps, etc. In this book the author examines the actions of the two SS groups in fighting the guerilla forces left behind as the Soviet armies retreated into the Soviet Union.

His conclusion is that the two forces were not nearly so separate as the post war stories would have you believe. He points out that 'across all the years of research, no examples were found of SS officers refusing to participate in crimes, or to refuse medals for having so participated.

As an secondary point, this book discusses the techniques used in fighting irregular forces. As the US is now involved in such a campaign in Iraq, there is perhaps a lesson to be learned. On the other hand, it is not clear that the American forces could act in the way of the SS. This leaves the question open as to what to do in Iraq.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT READING.......2005-08-18

Awesome read! I'm female and loved this book so guys would love it more. Read about would it takes to became a Naval Aviator!!
LOVED IT!

5 out of 5 stars Really great book - exciting and action-packed!.......2004-05-02

I loved this book and recommend it as the best in its category of books about Navy pilots. A lot happens to each of the pilots-in-training that are covered. I learned a lot about how pilots are trained and what their day-to-day life is like (very busy!). A lot of the parts were very interesting, such as when the author talks about pilots who quit the Navy after all the expensive and difficult training has been given to them, and about going in front of review boards in danger of losing your wings after a particularly scary performance in the air, or even giving up your wings voluntarily if you grow to fear the "smoking hole in the ground" too much (what you'll end up as if you crash your jet and can't eject safely.) Could easily be made into a great movie.

5 out of 5 stars Shift your career into high gear.......2003-04-28

Bogeys and Bandits gives the real life accounts of the training of F/A-18 Navy fighter pilots. The book jumps around each of the characters as they progress through their training -- from accomplishing difficult missions to getting medically disqualified. To anyone that wants to be or dreams to be a pilot or astronaut, this is a must-read. Perhaps the only downfall is that the story begins with all the characters already set for jet training. Personally, I would have liked to know how the characters also got into the training program for jets. Overall, the book is very fast paced and will surely enthrall you with the unbelievably exciting training and manuevers that these men and women have to go through to become FIGHTER PILOTS.

5 out of 5 stars very very good writing, on one of my favorite subjects.......2002-11-03

Really an enjoyable book! I have to confess I was actually in a squadron with two of the characters, though in one case the name was changed to protect the guilty party :) 'Nuff said, but I would like to thank the writer profusely for "rubbing it in" to her poor thin skin. She had it coming........ :) Actually Jugs (her REAL callsign) was kinda a nice gal in some ways, but the Gender Thang is something that is going to haunt the US Navy for a while to come. I don't know what the answer is, and I say that as a former WAVE. Hello to any of my shipmates reading, who shared those "best of times, worst of times" and "Have a Bandit Day".........

5 out of 5 stars The Roar of the Hornet.......2002-09-26

It's got to be every kid's dream - to be one of those gods who fly the fast metal, the hot jets, the fighter planes that command the skies.

And then to go that Top Gun step beyond and be one of the two thousand pilots in the entire world who are qualified to land a jet on an aircraft carrier.

This book tells how it's done, and it's a collection of yarns and descriptions and portraits and moments, some poignant, some routine, some heart-stopping, some heart-pounding that puts the reader through the process.

The author is an old aviator and knows his stuff. He's not fooled. You or I would get a lot of tall stories if we tagged along with a notebook, but Robert Gandt knows what's going on, and he gives us the good guff as he follows a class of "nuggets" learning how to fly, fight, strike, and carrier qualify with the F/A-18 Hornet.

Along the way he looks at some if the issues facing the US Navy. Race, education, sex, safety. And warfighting. This is deadly serious stuff, and these people are the cream of America's crop just to have got to the stage where they are even considered for fighter training.

It's a hell of a lot of fun, to live that little boy dream, but also a hell of a lot of work, and I take my hat off to the aviators Gandt describes. I also took my shoes off and put my feet up for a day while I read the book, and though the world outside was calm and sunny, inside my head the windows were rattling and the floor shaking with the roar of these high performance aircraft flying off the pages of this most excellent book. Strap yourself in before you read it!

I liked this book because it was very exciting. Julie Eric and Neal see a two headed beast named Kem and he died 400 years ago and if he came back so would Tarkoom city of bandits. and when they are in a pit they meet young galen.

5 out of 5 stars Secrets of Droon review.......2001-01-18

This book was great . It would be scary for little kids though. There were lots of hawk bandits and an old city that was destroyed 400 years ago came back. I liked it because it kept me in suspense because you want to see if it is a happy ending. The main characters in this book are Julie a girl from the Upper World, Eric a boy from the Upper World, Neal another boy from the Upper World, and Keeah a princess and junior wizard from Droon. There where also otter-like creatures called mooples. In a picture they were so , so cute. Also there were 2 Galens, one from Tarkoom's time , the other his older form. I would recommend this book for children ages 6-12.

5 out of 5 stars Of dogs and men.......2007-01-22

This isn't a book about dog training, although it talks about that quite a bit. It's not even a book about dogs really, although it talks about dogs all the time. It's really about our relationships with dogs, how they fit into our lives and our society and our mythology. Hearne taught poetry at Yale, but her real calling seems to be dog training. Her writing is funny and dry and full of information, and sooner or later she'll say something that annoys you. But if you can't take a little annoyance you should have a dog. And she's probably only annoying you because you are carrying around some misconception about dogs.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book very true to the issue.......2005-12-27

I have owned and trained multiple breed of dogs and Ms Hearne is very right about the issue. This book should be mandatory to be read by anyone and everyone of the dumb politicians that come up with those stupid bans. This book is very true and is a must read, whether you are a dog owner (of any breed) or not.

1 out of 5 stars The S&M Trainer.......2005-10-05

The late Vicky Hearne was never considered a great trainer across the board. Those that believe in Positive Reinforcement training consider her techniques and ideology to be cruel and unnecessary. For instance: holding a dogs head in a hole filled with water to stop the dog from digging. There are other methods that can stop the behavior without using such barbaric methods. Her techniques should not be used, and notice, the aggressive dogs she deals with are never rehabilitated into mainstream doggy life as it were. They are never trained to the point of being trusted. So much for her methods.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books.......2005-07-27

Some people object to Vicki Hearne's writing style (smart girls can be annoying). Others feel her training methods were too harsh. But Vicki Hearne knew a great dog, and how to write about one. Be warned: This book is politically incorrect and may make you do something really stupid, like adopt a pit bull. Vicki Hearne is, after all, the one who said, "It is true that Pit Bulls grab and hold on. But what they most often grab and refuse to let go of is your heart, not your arm."

4 out of 5 stars Great Dog, Difficult Book to Process.......2002-10-11

I respect Vicki Hearne, I like this book. Bandit, and his case that Vicki fought for so well was a very important watermark in exposing the myths and half truths that cause so many local authorities accross the country to blindly deem certain breeds of dogs as dangerous. I want to love this book because of this, however, for me the book was to difficult to read. Vicki uses extremely complicated sentence structure and seems to enjoy putting the reader through the wringer before she makes her point. I had to come back to this book a few times to finish it. I believe this is a story we all should be aware of, unfortunately the style of writing alienates it from a good deal of it's prospective audience. If you're well read, go for it, if not just expect to go through a mental obstacle course before the book is finished!

    Book Description

She was born in India to the lowest caste, a group with few rights and even fewer prospects. Enduring cruel poverty, Phoolan Devi survived the humiliation of an abusive marriage, the savage killing of her bandit-lover and horrifying gang rape to claim retribution for herself and all low-caste women of the Indian plains. In a three-year campaign that rocked the government, she delivered justice to rape victims and stole from the rich to give to the poor, before negotiating surrender on her own terms. Throughout her years of imprisonment without trial, Phoolan Devi remained a beacon of hope for the poor and the downtrodden. In 1996, amidst both popular support and media controversy, she was elected to the Parliament.

On July 25th, 2001, Phoolan Devi was shot dead in Delhi. The identity of her killers is unknown, but it is thought that they may include relatives of villagers killed by her gang nearly twenty years ago. For over a decade millions have found the power and scope of Phoolan Devi's myth irresistible. Now she finally tells the story of her life through her eyes and in her own voice.

5 out of 5 stars I would have liked to have known her..........2007-05-13

This book is about Phoolan Devi, aka the Bandit Queen. The book takes you through her early years, which were full of violence, racism/castism/and sexism, to her rise in India's parliament. It is a compelling read, if not a violent one, and at times I had to put it down to contemplate this woman and what she had to overcome in this life.

    5 out of 5 stars A moving Autobiography.......2007-02-04

Phoolan Devi is an amazing individual no doubt who overcame obstacles bigger than most of us face. Here's what I like about the book: It was a tale told from the eyes of someone who was in poverty of what it's REALLY like... generally we hear about the situations of such people through the eyes of an empathetic outsider and here is a vivid inside perspective. Most impoverished people never get to tell their tales and I think the two authors who wrote what Phoolan dictated (she could not read/write) did the world a favor. This book has raised my awareness.

From a story perspective, it is more incredible than most fictional novels.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Robin Hood.......2006-10-31

Reviewed by Mary Greenwood for Reader Views (08//06)

"The Bandit Queen of India" is a true story of Phoolan Devi, as told to French journalists Marie-Therese Cuny and Paul Rambali who transcribed the story for her since she was unable to read or write. Phoolan Devi was born into a family of boatmen called Mullahs, who were the lowest caste, in a small village in Ottar Pradesh, India. "The Bandit Queen of India" is unrelenting in showing the grueling life of low-caste girls in India. If written as fiction, one could not believe that all this tragedy, cruelty and degradation could come to one person. Phoolan and her sisters are beaten by their parents, mostly by their mother. Times are so bad that her mother was thankful when twin daughters died after birth. Later, when, yet another girl was born, her mother refused to nurse her and made the rest of the family find food for her. Mothers pray to have boy babies. There never was enough to eat. Their caste was expected to do the worst jobs such as picking lice from others' scalps and not ask for anything in return. Her father told her it was her duty to do these things. Once when doing a menial chore, she saw mangoes and asked for a little piece. The upper-caste man slapped her very hard and said: `How dare you ask me for a mango! Today you want a mango. Tomorrow it will be something else!"

Devi was married at the age of 11 for a dowry of a cow and bicycle to a man in his 30's she had met once. Her father asked his future son-in-law to wait to take the girl until she was older. Instead the husband takes her and beats and rapes her. Ever her new father-in-law, who pretends to help her, betrays her. Later she is able to escape and goes back to her village where she is ostracized because she did not stay with her husband even though she is only 11. Her parents could only protect her for a few years and finally the husband came back and claimed his wife and brandished his fury on her for escaping earlier. If that was not enough, she was also brutally gang-raped by bandits. Later one of the bandits, Vikram, saved her from sure death and fell in love with her. She became the Bandit Queen and Vikram was the Bandit King. They lived like Robin Hood taking from the rich and giving to the poor, sometimes even returning to the poor the same jewelry that had been stolen.

When Vikram was murdered by one of their gang members, Phoolan was able to escape and formed her own gang. She went back to her village and murdered 22 upper-caste men, some of whom were involved in torturing and raping her. There was a great hunt for her, but she was able to evade capture. Later she was able to negotiate a deal with Indira Gandhi who agreed that she would not receive the death penalty. She then turned herself in and spent 11 years in jail. She was released and her case never went to trial. She was well-known and was elected to the Indian Parliament. Her life has come full circle. However, in 2001, on the way to her home from Parliament, she was assassinated, supposedly for retaliation for the murders of the 22 men.

In the Epilogue of "The Bandit Queen of India," Phoolan explains why she wants her story told: "So many times I reached out my hands and nobody helped me. They called me a pest and a criminal. I never consider myself to be someone good, but I wasn't a criminal, either. All I did was make men suffer what they made me suffer. "Now for the first time, a woman from my community has been able to tell the truth about her life and testify in public to the injustice we all had to suffer. It was my hope that my testimonial would give help to others; other women, my sisters who have been humiliated, and my brothers who are being exploited."

"The Bandit Queen of India" focuses on her early life and as she is subjected to more and more indignities, humiliations and degradations, it is not hard to see why she would want to get revenge when she had a chance. The reader does not have to condone the violence and murder in order to understand it. It is a harsh life and it is not hard to see why the legend of the Bandit Queen has endured. It is a true "rags to riches" story except that the riches are the power to effect political change. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about the plight of women in India, the cruelties of the caste system and the story of a woman who had nothing and never gave up but was able to fight back. She is truly a modern Robin Hood and as such her legend lives on.

    5 out of 5 stars excelent .......2005-12-01

for an illiterate and uneducated person of a low cast this true story makes me see india in a new light. Now i am inspired to read more about indian mythology, religon and culture. Her death and suffering where not in vain...

1 out of 5 stars Read it as a fiction.......2005-03-27

This book should be in the fiction section. This book was written when Phoolan Devi had some serious political aspirations. The whole book is an exercise to project her as a female robinhood, a great protector of the lower castes of India. So we find the caste angle played out page after page.

Take this example from the introduction " The following year, 1996, Phoolan would be elected MP for Mirzapur, in Uttar Pradesh, and with the parliamentary seat would come immunity from prosecution. But at that point, it was as though the powerful Thakurs could still drown out the lone voice of a mere girl crying for retribution"
First some factual mistakes, MP are only immune from jail while the parliament is in session, not from prosecution.
She got only 11 years of jail for her connection to 23 murders, and the 'powerful' Thakurs couldnt do anything about that. How were they going to silence this MP now.
