Book Description
Pema Chodron is one of the West's most beloved teachers of Buddhism, making the Tibetan vajrayana tradition accessible in today's world. Now, three of her most popular teachings are available in one boxed set. The Pema Chodron Collection includes: Pure Meditation - step-by-step instruction in Tibetan Buddhism's pinnacle practice for transformation and letting go; Good Medicine - teachings in tonglen, an elegant meditation that allows us to use our troubles to befriend ourselves and widen our circle of compassion; and From Fear to Fearlessness - offers an antidote to fear in the four noble aspirations - maitri (lovingkindness), compassion, joy, and equanimity.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource for building self-esteem, fearlessness and working w emotions..........2007-06-24
This is a great collection by the warm, practical and humorous Pema Chodron. I work in the psychology field and Pema Chodron shares excellent practical advice as well as practices to cultivate unconditional self-love, universal compassion, tolerance for difficult emotions and ways of transforming negative internal states to positive ones.
There is nothing esoteric about these CDs and they can be enjoyed and implimented by anyone of any faith. The Dalai Lama has been quoted as saying his religion is "loving-kindness." This book is certainly written in this spirit. If you like Pema Chodron, you may also like Cheri Huber's work. The following books are particularly good... Making a Change for Good: A Guide to Compassionate Self-Discipline, There Is Nothing Wrong with You: Going Beyond Self-Hate, Be the Person You Want to Find: Relationship and Self-Discovery and How You Do Anything Is How You Do Everything: A Workbook.
Lastly, I want to mention that this set is a tremendous bargain. You get a lot of CDs with this and there is just enough overlap to develop concepts without hearing a lot of repitition. Highly recommended!
Pema explains so well and the techniques really work.......2007-04-22
I've been practising Tibetan Buddhist meditation and tonglen for many years. Even though these lessons are basic enough for beginners, they are useful and encouraging for more experienced practitioners, as Pema describes approaches different from ones I've learned. Its good to have options so that you can apply the most appropriate or most comfortable approach at any given time. I have not listened to the 3rd disc yet on facing your fears, but I'm looking forward to it.
a new way to deal with the world.......2007-02-13
I tend to take in the pain of others. Pema gives me a way of taking in the pain of living by breathing out compassion, a healthy way of handling that pain. I listen to the six CDs in rotation during my commute. I have ordered more of her CDs. No matter if the lessons are basically the same, just listening to her centers me.
If you are a religious person, please don't think that she is trying to convert you to Buddhism. She is just giving you a tool to get through the day. Nothing in her lessons contradicts any religion that believes in the practice of compassion.
Lovely Listening.......2007-01-28
In this wonderful collection, with warmth, humor, & kindliness, Pema gives down-to-earth ways to improve life through Buddhism: meditation (mindfulness, tranquil abiding & a bit of insight), the 4 Immeasurables (loving-kindness, compassion, joy, & equanimity) Bodhichitta, & Tonglen (sending and receiving) meditation. She explores Atisha's Slogans of (cf. her "Start Where You Are"), Lojong mind training (transforming obstacles into your practice; poisons into loving kindness & compassion). Tonglen (exchanging your joy for others' suffering) including on-the-spot Tonglen (done just when suffering appears) to subdue egocentricity & develop Bodhichitta/loving kindness. She espouses having the courage to experience discomfort, to change one's worldview, & face one's emotions squarely. Ani (honorific for a Buddhist nun) Chodron's wonderful turns of phrase include: "We look for strength in what weakens us, "We've gotten really good at making matters worse, "seeking happiness without a hangover. "the places of meeting your edge are the places of tantrum, & "emptiness is openness." She also provides valuable stories such as: the man who went into a coma, was moved elsewhere, woke up thinking he was dead, & lived the rest of is life that way.
She points out where her master, Trungpa Rinpoche digressed from the literal meanings of some of these practices & some changes suggested by the great 14th century master, Longchenpa (Longchen Rabjam). For example, the latter suggested meditating upon equanimity to establish stability prior to radiating loving kindness etc. Embedded in the technique is to radiate each item consecutively, but building up to stronger feelings within each sending--first apply it to someone you care about, then a neutral person, then someone you mildly dislike & finally to everyone. For example, compassion is the wish that everyone be free of suffering & the cause of suffering. Trungpa Rinpoche's modifications include: joy being the appreciation of peoples' basic goodness (empathetic joy IMHO). Joyfully, this set solves my usual problem with Pema's sets: that they're too short! I'd also recommend the 6-tape "Awakening Compassion" & "Noble Heart" sets. If you haven't had the great uplifting joy of experiencing Pema's tapes, this collection is a fine start.
Big fan of Pema Chodron.......2007-01-16
I have several of Pema Chodron cd's and she is very helpful in making mediation a workable practice. She addresses everyday issues in a humorous and down to earth manner.

Confused about feeding your baby or toddler? Child of Mine, by noted nutritionist Ellyn Satter, is an essential guide for every new parent concerned with nutrition and appetite. Satter's advice is thorough and straightforward: "You can't control or dictate the quantity of food your child eats, and you shouldn't try. You also can't control or dictate the kind of body your child develops, and you shouldn't try. What you can do, and it is a great deal, is set things up for your child so she, herself, can regulate her food intake as well as possible, and so she can develop a healthy body that is constitutionally right for her."
Child of Mine provides information on all aspects of feeding, from pregnancy through the toddler years. Satter begins with historical and social perspectives on infant feeding, describing how formula was developed and discussing the social movement that lead to accepting a child's input into his or her own development. Nutrition during pregnancy, infant feeding, introducing solid foods, building positive eating relationships, and avoiding eating disorders are all discussed. The sections on breastfeeding vs. bottle feeding, and on the regulation of food intake (particularly the relationship between parental attitudes and children's eating habits) are especially recommended.
Satter provides specific nutritional information (including charts, diagrams, and nutritional breakdowns) interspersed with a no-nonsense, experienced perspective that will help you establish good eating habits that your children will benefit from long after they're out of diapers. --Ericka Lutz
Book Description
Widely considered the leading book involving nutrition and feeding infants and children, this revised edition offers practical advice that takes into account the most recent research into such topics as: emotional, cultural, and genetic aspects of eating; proper diet during pregnancy; breast-feeding versus; bottle-feeding; introducing solid food to an infant's diet; feeding the preschooler; and avoiding mealtime battles. An appendix looks at a wide range of disorders including allergies, asthma, and hyperactivity, and how to teach a child who is reluctant to eat. The author also discusses the benefits and drawbacks of giving young children vitamins.

Feeding with Love and Good Sense.......2007-09-15
This book is great for parents of infants through preschoolers. It combines information on feeding dynamics, parenting, nutrition, developmental stages of eating and children's behavior. I purchased it to gain more information on feeding as a professional (occupational therapist) and have now started buying it as part of baby gifts. I wish I had it when my kids were babies.
Its great to see clinical 'proofs' that help to build parents confidence.......2007-08-05
Feeding seems to be a very emotional topic for many and parents seem to argue a lot with one another around this topic especially if their child is overweight or underweight. In many cases when talking to other parents you hear "My child is doing just fine and I'm not following the methods in that book", or "Well you grew up fine following my techniques didn't you?" mentalities that will be mirrored in our own beliefs and your own parents.
So what I find extremely useful in this book is the clinical evidence and references to studies presented. Since children even in the same family are different its good to hear the history of the previous century and read about the studies conducted. This scientific approach is helpful in building my confidence in what approaches to use and understanding that the approaches put forward in the book are not just the latest fad but something that has been tested and held up to scrutiny. She also discusses where she has been mistaken herself and is willing to admit her mistakes; mistakes that were proven out through (yes) more clinical studies.
So my advice for those looking at this book is read it with a scientists mindset and not with a mind of 'I bet this book proves my wife is wrong'. If you do this then I'm sure you'll enjoy it and find it useful in removing some of the stress of being a parent.
One more thing; I read one review that read:
"We eat curries, stir-fries, pastas, burritos, and a zillion other things. How could a celebrated nutrition expert have so little clue that lowfat food can be wonderful varied stuff?"
I'm sure this reader is more skilled than I at creating low fat burritos and congratulations are obviously due. However, I think this demonstrates my point in that here is an example of someone reading the book wanting to prove out their own approach and then being disappointed and offended that the book wasn't on their particular line of thinking.
Perfect baby shower gift.......2007-07-14
This book really helped us understand about how to introduce food and feed our children. The information incules everything from nursing and bottle feeding, through feeding during the toddler years. Ellyn Satter's philosophies make sense; they were easy to adapt to our life. We learned how to avoid food battles with our two year old. We wish we would have had this book when our first child came along! We now give it as a baby gift to all our friends.
Good Advice on Bottle Feeding and Starting on Solids.......2007-07-13
As someone who adopted my son at 5 months of age, I really appreciated a book that covered bottle-feeding sensibly without making me feel like my child was actively being harmed by formula or that I was a piece of s#$@ for not being able to breastfeed him. Too many books - particularly those from the attachment parenting realm - lead those of us who are unable to breastfeed to despair for our children's future.
It was also helpful when getting my son started on solids. After about 2 weeks he decided he was not going to let me spoon feed him (batted the spoon away at every opportunity). My instinct was to NOT let him hold the spoon and instead to find creative ways to jam that spoon in his mouth. Without this book, I don't know that I would have realized that he was not rejecting the FOOD, but was just really insistent on feeding himself. With this books tips and suggestions, I was able to find ways to accommodate his desire to self-feed with his lacking motor skills.
Also, my sister is a pediatric nutritionist. She gave me this book and always recommends it to all her patients' families.
child of mine.......2007-04-01
although this book had lots of information i needed more direction and actual meal ideas to get started.

Customer Reviews:
try it!.......2007-08-28
Ive been on hard core acid suppressent drugs for years and had huge problems every time i tried to go off them. Within a week i would have to start taking them again. Anyway i started reading this book and immediately stopped taking the nexium and started using superzymes. I dont quite understand how this works exactly but it does. Im just so relieved to not have to rely on those drugs anymore! Give it a go!
I must be the only one..........2007-08-26
whose heartburn was made worse by taking more acid. I suspect that much heartburn is caused by stress, which produces TOO MUCH stomach acid. It's always suspicious when EVERY review is 5 stars.
Excellent read.......2007-05-21
This book was recommended by my Internist as a must read. He was so right as this book was all about my problems and answered all my questions. The research was a plus as I always check my facts. I in the future I too will recommend this book.
Revolutionary book!.......2007-02-19
As a medical student, I've found this book to be spectacularly insightful and important. The book is simple, yet profound in it's explanations. The conclusions are logical and strongly substantiated.
Very important book.
Proves doctors are pill pushers.......2006-12-21
Highly rated by my clinical nutritionist. If a person has taken acid blockers for an extended period of time it's a must read. The downside is the authors try to overemphasize a point and the book gets a little boring.

Unfortunately this book was published too many years ago to have many products that are still around or cover recent products. The good part of this book is that it educates you about the harmful and toxic things that are in so many of the everyday products we use.

"We are a sleep-sick society," says William C. Dement, M.D., Ph.D. According to Dr. Dement, "sleep science" has yielded a great deal of scientific knowledge about sleep--yet the general public, and even doctors, aren't aware of it. Sleep disorders are routinely misdiagnosed or ignored, sometimes resulting in medical tragedy and death, frequently leading to chronic exhaustion. In The Promise of Sleep, Dr. Dement aims to remedy that by making the latest sleep information accessible to health professionals and lay readers. He describes the sleep cycle and gives a short history of sleep research. Then he dives into clear and detailed explanations of concepts and conditions we've all heard about, but that few of us understand: sleep debt, biological clock, circadian rhythm, insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy. He discusses why we need sleep (sounds obvious, but it isn't) and the role of dreams. After 300 pages of sleep facts, Dr. Dement teaches you how to "reclaim healthy sleep" in your own life. You learn to assess your personal sleep situation by keeping a sleep diary, measuring your sleep debt, and evaluating your risk of sleep disorders; find appropriate treatment; manage sleep crises; and adopt a "sleep-smart lifestyle." A three-week "sleep camp" program at the end helps you put all the strategies together. This book will put you to sleep--and that's meant as praise! --Joan Price
Book Description
Sleep better, live longer with the groundbreaking information and step-by-step program in this revolutionary book.
Healthful sleep has been empirically proven to be the single most important factor in predicting longevity, more influential than diet, exercise, or heredity. And yet we are a sleep-sick society, ignorant of the facts of sleep--and the price of sleep deprivation. In this groundbreaking book, based on decades of study on the frontiers of sleep science, Dr. William Dement, founder and director of the Stanford University Sleep Research Center, explains what happens when we sleep, when we don't, and how we can reclaim the most powerful--and underrated--health miracle of all.
Taking us on a fascinating tour of our sleeping body and mind, Dr. Dement reveals the price we have paid for ignoring sleep--an epidemic of heart disease, 33 percent of traffic-fatigue-related accidents, and immeasurable mental and psychological disadvantages. And he offers a hands-on prescription for vibrant good health and longevity, including...self-tests to determine how much sleep you really need...the role of prescription and over-the-counter sleeping aids...the latest research on how sleep affects the immune system...how to combat insomnia, snoring, and jet lag...plus information on sleep disorder clinics nationwide, Web sites, and more.
Taking readers on a fascinating tour of our sleeping body and mind,
Dr. William C. Dement reveals the price paid for ignoring sleep--an epidemic of heart disease, traffic-fatigue-related accidents (responsible for a full third of all traffic accidents), and immeasurable mental and psychological disadvantages. Offering a hands-on prescription for vibrant good health and longevity, THE PROMISE OF SLEEP includes self-tests to determine how much sleep you really need, full information on the role of prescription and over-the-counter sleeping aids, the latest research on how sleep affects the immune system, helpful methods for combating insomnia, snoring, and jet lag, plus information on sleep disorder clinics nationwide, sleep disorder Web sites, and more. -->
Customer Reviews:
Invaluable health info.......2007-07-22
The author is one of the pioneers of sleep research, totally in command of his subject and it's surprising exactly how important sleep is in a healthy lifestyle. My only complaint: I would have preferred more sleep research results and less sleep research.
Wonderful work.......2007-01-19
"After all the research I've done on sleep problems over the past four decades, my most significant finding is that ignorance is the worst sleep disorder of them all."
A half century of work combined to create a unique perspective. The first chapters deal with the basics: what sleep is and what we know about it. The next chapters deal with biology and sleep debt; causes: such as insomnia, apnea, narcolepsy, and fatigue; the effects: on the immune system and mood; dreams; personal needs; children; lifestyle. The appendix contains a list of sleep centers in each state.
"People need to change the way they sleep and live."
My sleep problems were brought on by personal troubles and trying to run a business 24/7; simplification was the answer. Excellent book; highly recommended, even for those just interested in the subject.
"Healthy sleep has been empirically proven to be the single most important determination in predicting longevity."
Wish you well
Scott
Important reference, too long, a bit dated.......2007-01-09
If you have just become interested in sleep disorders and want to know the foundations, this book is likely a must read by a pioneer in the field. The author makes a strong case that the medical issues of humans during the night is much undervalued in current practice. However, the book is too long, and is written in an inefficient and chatty style that doesn't have an obvious organizational structure to it. This makes it hard to use as a reference for the serious reader and a bit too ponderous for the casual lay reader. Furthermore, after reading other references and recent sleep and medical literature, it is likely that the author's rigid theory of a sleep deficit, and other major conclusions, are matters of current debate. The book, therefore, is a bit dated.
The Best! My insomnia has been gone for years now.......2006-11-21
I had a bad case of insomnia which after reading this book and following its principles has never returned
Thoroghly and well written by The Man of Sleep himself........2006-11-03
Dement tells us himself how the study of sleep got started and took off, but then how scientists now are not giving sleep the attention it deserves. Sleep deprivation leads to depression, listlessness, lack of motivation, decreased alertness, and possible involuntary sleep episodes (falling asleep at the wheel, sleep apnea, etc.). Missed sleep is not made up by sleeping more the next day/night but rather accumulates over days and months until one has a vast accumulation of "sleep debt". This is proven through scientific studies as Dement iterates in his text. Helpful and informative, this is the book for anyone suffering from lack of sleep and is the foremost book on the subject of sleep for psychological courses focused on sleep & sleep disorders. Also includes Freud's and Jung's explanations of why we dream.

Rare find .......2007-09-06
I will certainly keep this book handy and use it frequently treating myself and my family. It's a book I've been waiting for a long time to read. Priceless information. Simple. Easy to follow. And the best thing of all, it costs you almost nothing! As one of the readers noted, this book can possibly make dieting industry die out, and many pharmaceutical companies with raised by them doctors would be out of business, if only people allowed themselves be wise enough to use very simple advice from this book. My mother, who is RN, almost never turned to prescription medications to treat my illnesses, on the contrary, many of her treatments were from holistic medicine, and some of them I find in this book. Wonderful book, amazing, wise! Yes, I can't agree with part on reading character by eye colour and horoscope, but let it be a fun reading and not a scientific statement. Beside that, this book is extremely valuable.
Logic,...Logic,....Logic.......2007-09-01
If you are proactive in maintaining your health this book is absolutley for you along with Cure the Incurable. If you are not proactive I would not suggest this book for you
Who wants to live 150 years???....not me, but, that is not the point. The point is to show us how our body functions and the common sense principles to our health...its call biology, plain and simple
Skeptics are usually the ones that need it most...............don't knock it til you try it
Simple, Sensible and Extremely Effective.......2007-06-02
This is the ultimate holistic living guide. From correct breathing, through taking care of your back, to proper food combination, the author provides natural recipes for everyday living. The words are direct, awakening and motivating, causing you to start taking care of yourself.
Very important for me was chapter six - Complete Body Cleansing. The liver cleansing is really very rejuvenating. You have to prepare for the procedure a few days earlier by appropriately changing your diet. The liver cleansing itself takes two full days of total concentration on your own body. It is not pleasant but it is very rewarding. After it was over I felt like a newborn. Somehow it also pushed me to improve my eating habits.
Also very good is the chapter about obesity. Without complicating the matter, like many other authors tend to do, the author very effectively deals with the subject in one short chapter. He explains the reasons behind ineffectiveness of most popular dieting programs and suggests simple ways for dealing with the most common habits that lead us to gaining weight. PAINLESS AND EFFECTIVE!
Very helpful is also the chart on proper food combination. Applying the simple rules from the chart after my liver cleansing keeps me feel youthful and energetic, and I keep losing weight week after week.
No one before has motivated me so well. Just follow the simple advice for a month or two and you will see the difference. You will feel better and you will look better. What else do you need?
Another great book that I highly recommend for all those wanting to live healthy life and stay away from prescription drugs is Prescription for Nutritional Healing.
Sometimes you just have to laugh.......2007-04-08
How the author manages to delete all the negative reviews so quickly month after month is quite impressive. I remember writing a negative review a couple of years ago. Actually I wrote two and both disappeared. Now I return and the same battle is waging. For info on this guy check out the discussion section below.
Your health and wellbeing are in your own hands.......2007-02-10
I am usually very skeptical about various claims that can be found in the books written by many "self-healers" and other gurus. The author however, does not over-promise in any chapter of his book, in spite of its catchy title.
It is a good compilation of safe-and-sound recommendations for longevity and healthy living. I did smile at some of them (walking bare footed, etc.) but even if I do not believe in their direct benefits, they might still bring about good results for those who do believe (placebo effect). In any case, none of the recommendations can in any way be harmful as most of the remedies contain products used by many of us on a daily basis.
Other advice, like proper food combination, periodic fasting, taking hot and cold baths, using sauna, drinking pure mineral water, taking daily walks, etc, are just common sense and indeed very beneficial for our mental and physical conditions. By the way, the author clearly states that he is not a medical doctor himself but that he just compiled the wisdom of many nations - from Europe, via Tibet, to old China. As a result, some of the ingredients suggested in certain remedies can be difficult to obtain in North America. For example kefir. It is a dairy product, with well known health benefits, that is very popular in Europe but hardly ever obtainable in the US, except for specialty organic food shops. [...]
There are a few Apendices at the end of the book. Some of them are too much on the side of "New Age" and does not really fit my analitical mind. However it might be of some interest for those who like to believe in astrology, Horoscope etc. I think it is fine to read it as an interesting trivia, especially since this is presented in the Apendices -- clearly outside of the main body of the book.
The author was educated as a biologist and chemist, but he devoted his life to studying human body and he is a well known authority on healthy living documented by the fact the he was the head of Center of Health Sciences in Moscow. I do believe that this book will be very beneficial for many people, especially for those jumping from one fad diet to another. As the author rightly pointed out - your health and wellbeing are in your own hands.
Many methods and remedies suggested by the author are indeed valuable and effective. They are presented for the reader to explore. Please use them wisely! On the scale of 0 to 10 I give the book 9 points. Highly recommended reading!

Book Description
Did you know that Carbohydrates supply most of the energy your body uses? You should drink at least 5 glasses of water every day? The mineral iron is found in foods cooked in iron pans? 3 slices of bread contain 200 calories?
Jam-packed with fascinating facts such as the ones above, Good Enough to Eat is uniquely designed to satisfy kids' love of food, and their curiosity about how their bodies work.
This book offers all of the basics found in an adult nutrition guide in a format designed specifically for kids. Lizzy Rockwell has filled Good Enough to Eat with funny speech bubbles, detailed illustrations, and an engaging cast of children who munch their way across the pages while explaining everything from why your body needs protein to the food pyramid and how to use it. You'll even find hands-on experiments that test food for fat and reveal the differences between starch and sweet carbohydrates, and recipes using the nutritious foods that children need in their daily diet.

Just What We Needed.......2006-11-10
Our 9 year old grandson had been putting on some weight and I had ordered Good Enough to Eat:A Kid's Guide to Food and Nutrition by Lizzy Rockwell to help us deal with this problem that is confronting so many American children today.
Our grandson read it out loud with interest. We (his Dad and grandparents) all sat around together to listen, appreciate and comment. He took the book home with him and has continued to read and learn about nutrition, and healthy eating habits.
He and his Dad talk about the book together as they inaugurate a new way of meal planning and snacking that will help take off pounds and teach our grandson how to make "informed" choices while still enjoying that delicious experience we all share, eating!
We highly recommend this informative book with its delightful illustrations. It is a great motivator, along with the support of parents and family. It gives a child as sense of being "in charge" rather than being the "victim" of calories. It can be a real help to parents who want to educate their children about the value and pleasure of eating well and wisely.
Not helpful for a ten year old!.......2006-09-18
I didn't find this book helpful, and here's why: My 10 year old daughter tends to over eat and crave unhealthy foods, so I'm working on educating her on nutrition and keeping her active. I thought this book looked like a good resources, but the problem is that it looks like a young child's book, even though it contains good information in the second half, appropriate to an older child. So, my 10 year old took one look at it, declared it a 'baby's book' (because the cover and art and first pages look like it's designed for a very young child), and I couldn't get her further in it, because she prides herself on now being able to read 'big kid' (chapter type) books. The packaging/art approach just don't match the level of the content!
Learn food in color.......2006-08-01
Very easy to read. Lot of color. Food pyramid is out of date but the book is still very well done for kids.
recommended.......2006-07-30
This is very easy to understand for kids and helpful if you want them to understand why you want them to eat certain foods, it explains food groups, carbs, protein, etc on a level they can understand. I got very into nutrition and wanted a way for my 6 year old to understand it too.
Good but darn that old food pyramid.......2006-06-19
I ordered the book online. It is colorful and does contain some really good information given in a way that kids are willing to read and discuss it. I am pleased it is detailed, discussing protein, vitamins and such. However, I was quite disappointed to see the old food pyramid. I thought by now that it wouldn't still be going into books about nutrition. If I could easily rip that page out I would. Frustrating

orthopedic swiss ball applications.......2001-07-11
This book is excellent! It shows illustrated step by step instructions to complete each exercise. Great for rehab purposes or just toning up. There are about 190 pages of instruction. The instruction not only includes the swiss ball but also the swiss ball with dumbells and resistance band. This exercise book strengthens your mid-section (abs, truck area. Once again, this is an excellent book!!
Using the ball, tubing--if so, this book is good to have!.......2000-12-26
This book illustrates cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility exercises using the Swiss ball, rubberized tubing, and dumbbells. The text also illustrates correct techniques as well as different levels of difficulty for each exercise. Good book to own!
