Good for beginner....Not for advanced.......2006-05-15
This book is truely for beginners who have no clue of signal Integrity. He starts this book with stuff like Ohm's law and how capacitors and inductors work which most people learn in high school.
But his explanations are really simple and easy to understand without lots of technical jargon. Very good for beginners bot not so good for more experienced engineers.
Probably the most readable book you'll find on this.......2004-03-04
Brook's book is exceptional in the clarity of the writing, esp. in explaining key concepts that most engineers are fuzzy on. This book is great at giving engineers an intuitive feel for basic electromagnetics and how it relates to signal integrity and emi.
It's main strength (and to some it's major weakness) is that it avoids the mess of equations of better known books like Johnson's "High-Speed Digital Design". Brooks is also a good writer, and he writes very clearly. Don't get this book, if you already understand the subject, since it doesn't cover advanced material. However, this is essential reading for those who don't have a clue or for those (like me), who've memorized a lot of emi guidelines, without really understanding why they're necessary.
Given the book's title, the only area of improvement I can think of is a chapter or appendix on basic pcb manufacturing and terminology (buried vias, microvias, antipads, etc).
A chasm has been bridged..........2003-09-22
As an educator, lecturer and practicing designer I am given many books to read and make comment on. I find very few books that are able to bridge the chasm between the needs of a beginner learning about signal integrity and the needs of a professional desperate to solve design problems. This book is an excellent primer and reference for understanding the interrelationship between the board layout and the signal integrity problem. This book details design solutions to classic signal integrity problems and educates the novice in understanding the reasoning behind the solutions. There is a lot of nonsense being written about signal integrity and few people have the resources to filter out the chaff from hay. This book proves every principle presented with tested board layouts, demonstrated engineering principles, or documented laboratory results. Some people can see the world in formulas and some see the world pictorially. This book is rich in both forms of expressionism and its presentation will not exasperate the PCB designer who sees the world visually, or frustrate the engineer seeking equations for design representation. This book has been added to the required reading list for our PCB layout designers and product development engineering teams.

worst textbook ever.......2007-04-27
I took a graduate class at the University of Cincinnati and they used this book (it was round 2 for me as I had Communication Systems with his book that was co-authored by Salehi). Two classes + two Proakis books = brain hemorrhage. I will say that if you are mathematically strong doing well in these courses won't pose a problem. However, the amount of rereading needed to hammer in the concepts is overwhelming. It wouldn't have to be this way if he put in a lot of examples. Also, most of the problems are proofs or very complex and for that reason I noticed that neither of the professors that I had used problems from the book on exams. One exam was forced to become a take home as the results were so terrible and the other was a gram schmidt problem coupled with a small proof on bandpass signals. Some advice is in order. Follow these steps if you want to learn the material:
1.) Take and ace a Random Processes class. This will get you the background you need to blow through chapters 2 and 4 of Digital Communications by Proakis.
2.) Over break or during free time pick up the Communication Systems Engineering book and read through chapter 7 to hammer home chapter 5 of Digital Communications.
3.) Invest in a solution manual if you can find it. This way one can try ALL of the problems in the text and really learn the material.
As a final note, if you can master this course then there is absolutely no graduate class that will stand in your way. Any wireless or DSP class will seem like calc I after it.
Mediocre.......2007-03-28
I have an earlier version of this book and I also had Dr. Proakis as a professor in graduate school. Dr. Proakis has a nack of making something simple into something complex. His teaching style is similar. I always thought com theory was very difficult until I read books by others that discussed the same topics in a more cogent and lucid style.
3.64 lbs of Pure Spirtual Abuse .......2006-10-26
Someone with a decent grasp of com-theory giving this book five stars is beyond my comprehension. It provides instructors all the benefits of deception with virtually no risk of being deceived themselves. Even taking into account intellectual deception and cultural coercion due to a sense of professional self-preservation and survival, the use or praise of this text is beyond justification. Unless someone has the emotional intelligence of a turnip or purely enjoys seeing students in a state of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), there is no way anybody should be saying "I love it" (official Amazonian meaning of 5 stars) about this text.
Master Tool for stupidification of next generation communications engineers.......2006-07-15
Let me explain the title below with a quote:
<
< According to Professor Donaldo Macedo, director of the Applied Linguistics Graduate Program, schools do not always serve the best interests of their students. Combined with media and other social institutions, educational institutions often stifle critical thinking by creating a pretext of equality and perpetuating ignorance through what Macedo refers to as a process of "stupidification" or forced submission of the mind.>>
Proakis offers a major volume of cut and paste research results without intuition despite it is in its fourth edition. The volume of the book forces graduate students to scan the book without much thinking to learn the labels so that they can get through job interviews or decorate their resumes. As a result, the next generation engineers are bred as table look-up employees, dropping algorithm names without understanding the deep reasoning behind various approaches.
Proakis makes a decent acronym look-up dictionary, however undue trust on the quality and coverage of this book results in arrested mental development. This poses a significant challenge to hiring managers for research positions.
Two stars are given for the copy and paste effort since it takes two keys to do so (CTRL-C/CTRL-V). Buy for communicating with the lost generation, buy Wozencraft&Jacobs/VanTrees/Gallager and read tutorial papers to get a deep understanding if you care to learn the fundamentals of your profession.
If you dont care to learn your engineering profession fundamentals, then why dont you do an MBA?
Good coverage but poor organization ..........2003-10-20
I both love and hate this book at the same time! Its great for its wide coverage and unified presentation of material but the organization is rather poor indeed. There is little motivation and the material is presented as a matter of fact collection of topics. The presentation also seems to be out of sequence at times.
Other gripes: The errata is quite large and still not complete. Upon closer inspection, I found that several of the problems require assumptions that are not clearly described in the problem statement. This leads to a frustrating experience at times.
I can think of ways in which the material could be re-organized to make the "flow" much better. Doing this and adding little motivation and connecting material would make this a truly great book. I don't think that much additional effort is required for the re-organization - too bad this hasn't happened in the first 4 editions.
A major plus of the book remains - nothing else comes close in coverage. So it is still a pretty decent book if you can get the intuition and organization from elsewhere.
Book Description
"This book is a great demonstration of this powerful approach and how it can make a meaningful difference in any type of business. It takes a dedicated engineering approach to implement, but the payback in customer satisfaction and growth is dramatic."

Three words Excellent Excellent and Excellent.......2007-07-12
Really Good book. Book is written very consciously keeping all aspect of most promising but controversial topic.
AWESOME BOOK!!! SIMPLY GREAT!.......2005-10-18
well, if you are like me, always busy, and trying to find new answers to unknown problems using taguchi or other quality engineering problems, THIS IS YOUR BOOK!! this book has great cases, applicable to MANY INDUSTRIES!! it is like my Bible, i tried to sell it once, and simply BROKE MY HEART and I COULD NOT!!
This book, is an excellent job, I WISHED ONLY I WISHED!!! that my tractor or my previous car (CHEVY) was designed using REAL ROBUST DESIGN METHODS BY TAGUCHI, in that way, I would not need to go to the repair shop every now and then... :=), enjoy guys, it is simply a MASTER PIECE! considering that I worked for a japanese company as well, this book is great!!! BUY IT you won't regret it... if you love this stuff as much as I DO!! Regards Marco Sisfontes, Phd, NYC.
The Qiuality Engineering Manual.......2005-01-24
The handbook gives the true foundation for the supply of quality products or services. It focuses on the design of the product and it's need to perform correctly in the customer's use environment.
The thing I really like is the inclusion of case studies. The addition of actual applications enhances the understanding of the theory presented in the first part of the book. The case studies are also good thought starters for your applications.

Customer Reviews:
The Book on Advanced Detection Theory.......2003-09-24
As far as I am concerned this is simply the best book for advanced detection theory. Notice the word "advanced", this book is not for the beginner. It is an updated version of Whalen's first edition, which I have kept close at hand for most of my career. Whereas most texts available are weak on the statistical analysis of signals, this book is strong. I would be surprised if anyone who considered himself an expert on detection theory did not have a copy. If it has a weakness it is in showing the direct connections to applications.
An Advanced Book on Detection Theory.......2003-03-26
This is perhaps the best book available for advanced detection theory. The probabalistic underpinnings are discussed at length. A lot of the other reviews complain about the mathematical difficulty of this text; however, it is an advanced text. Not all texts are required to be accessible to beginners in the subject. If you want to become an expert in detection theory, this is the next step after your introductory course(s). To really get there, you need to have experience in the applications as well.
If you don't have some background in detection theory or at least hypothesis testing, then in my estimation this is probably not the book for you. On the other hand if the myriad texts available are beginning to appear to be a little bit weak on the probability/statistics analysis of signals, then this is the book for you.
Worst textbook I ever had.......2002-01-03
This book manages to describe even straight-forward concepts in a way that is simply incomprehensible. If you are learning the material, you often have to read a paragraph many times to make any sense out of it. And let's not blame it on the concepts, what it comes down to is confusing presentation and terrible use of English language.
I can't believe it has second edition.
Good for reference, not for learning.......2000-10-13
This book is adequate for reference, but if you plan on learning anything, this is not the book for you. Typos and the overuse of the same symbols to mean everything create an unfriendly environment for the reader. The book goes into unnecessary derivations and presents the material in a backward order that confuses the reader. In summary: Let H0 be the author's intended message to the reader. Let N be the organization and writing style of the book. Let D0 be the reader's proper interpretation of the author's message. The reader's interpretation is then I = H0+N. Then P(D0|I)
<0.25
I would give it zero stars if that was an option.......2000-09-13
This book is written with so much hand-waving that a reader attempting to learn the subject must spend all of their time trying to figure out what the mathematics are that lead to the GOD given answers that Robby N. McDontKnow supplies us with. That last statement may have been a little harsh, but the missing mathematics combined with the frequent typos of the text provide for unequal frustration for any student attempting to learn this topic.
Book Description
Sections on important areas such as spread spectrum, cellular communications, and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing are provided.
* Computational examples are included, illustrating how to use the computer as a simulation tool, thereby allowing waveforms, spectra, and performance curves to be generated.
* Overviews of the necessary background in signal, system, probability, and random process theory required for the analog and digital communications topics covered in the book.
Customer Reviews:
Difficult, rewarding journey.......2007-03-29
I recently finished a course on EE math (a prerequisite to a graduate EE program). Although the book is dense and somewhat cryptic--it provides a solid bridge from an undergraduate to a graduate program (at least that's what my professor claims). Leafing through Professor Ziemer's book, I can imagine how many times I'll be referring back to this text. Principles of Communication... should be on your shelf next to Horowitz and Kraus.
Book Description
In this updated edition the main thrust is on applied Kalman filtering. Chapters 1-3 provide a minimal background in random process theory and the response of linear systems to random inputs. The following chapter is devoted to Wiener filtering and the remainder of the text deals with various facets of Kalman filtering with emphasis on applications. Starred problems at the end of each chapter are computer exercises. The authors believe that programming the equations and analyzing the results of specific examples is the best way to obtain the insight that is essential in engineering work.

Lacking explanations as a textbook.......2004-02-11
I am trying to learn the subject by reading this and Gelb. Even though this book covers a lot of introductory concepts, it is lacking proper derivation of equations that I usually see in most math and physics textbooks. I find this book very disappointing for its price.
what you need to get started.......2003-07-05
I have read over simplified and over complicated descriptions
of the Kalman filter for years. The theoretical discussion is
well matched to the examples. THe authors have obviously had
extensive experiance TEACHING to a wide range of students and
the book benefits from their experiance.
I was able to program filters for three of the examples that
most closely match my own applications and exploit what I
learned in a matter of hours. The MATLAB code was useful, but
not critical.

Best Kalman filter book.......2003-03-12
I use this book on a daily basis. It is worth its weight in gold.
Kalman filters, Brown & Hwang vs. Gelb.......2003-02-07
This is not my favorite text on Kalman filters. I find there is too much emphasis on elementary, preliminary material, and not enough on application.
I teach the subject out of my own notes (draft book) where the development follows that of Gelb, Applied Optimal Estimation, and all of the computations are done in Matlab. I first read Kalman's original papers in great detail, and rederived his work before the Gelb book (MIT Press, 1974) was published. Since the advdent of Matlab (1984) I have continued to used Gelb's derivations, and augmented that work with extensive Matlab examples.
I still find Gelb more usable as a text than other, newer books, and will continue to use it along with my Matlab supplements.

Intuitive Probability and Random Processes using MATLAB
ASIN: 0849375541 |
Book Description
Understanding the nature of random signals and noise is critically important for detecting signals and for reducing and minimizing the effects of noise in applications such as communications and control systems. Outlining a variety of techniques and explaining when and how to use them, Random Signals and Noise: A Mathematical Introduction focuses on applications and practical problem solving rather than probability theory. A Firm Foundation Before launching into the particulars of random signals and noise, the author outlines the elements of probability that are used throughout the book and includes an appendix on the relevant aspects of linear algebra. He offers a careful treatment of Lagrange multipliers and the Fourier transform, as well as the basics of stochastic processes, estimation, matched filtering, the Wiener-Khinchin theorem and its applications, the Schottky and Nyquist formulas, and physical sources of noise. Practical Tools for Modern Problems Along with these traditional topics, the book includes a chapter devoted to spread spectrum techniques. It also demonstrates the use of MATLAB® for solving complicated problems in a short amount of time while still building a sound knowledge of the underlying principles. A self-contained primer for solving real problems, Random Signals and Noise presents a complete set of tools and offers guidance on their effective application.
Book Description
* Covers the three major areas: signal and system analysis, analog communication, and digital communication
* Emphasis on HDTV, LANs, WANs, satellite (iridium) telephone systems to address changes in professional arena
* Features examples and exercises within each chapter, helping to master new concepts as they are introduced
Customer Reviews:
Interesting topics, but poorly written and lacks insight.......2007-03-19
My Background:
I am a junior engineering-physics major, with an interest in microelectronics and circuit design, currently using this book as a textbook for a course on communications systems.
Comments on Previous Reviews:
I am slightly puzzled by those who think that the book is too mathematically intense, there's really nothing much beyond fourier analysis and basic probability, and most of the text relies only on simple trigonometry. I actually thought the the mathematics in the book were simplistic and inelegant, and detracted from the presentation. Also, as to the complaint of typos, if you are actually following the derivations, such typos are a minor inconvenience and can be easily identified, and while annoying, by no means invalidate the book as a text.
Finally, to the author of the previous review: you should keep comments about your opinions of other people's intelligence or capacity to be engineers out of your review. Such remarks are useless to potential buyers, and serve only to demonstrate ignorance and short-citedness.
Critique of the Book:
My main criticism of the book is that it does not give much insight into the topics, and is extremely poorly written. This makes for a boring read, and I feel like the text did not contribute significantly to my understanding of the subject, but rather I relied on previous mathematical and engineering experience and my professor's explanations.
Furthermore, although it sounds somewhat inane, I was also really bothered by the layout of the book. For some reason, new publishers decide that it's helpful to stick boxes and charts and change font sizes etc... almost at random, in order to be more dynamic. This in itself, wouldn't be disasterous, but it seems to contribute to the disjointedness of the presentation.
Anyway, long story short, the concepts are explained poorly, inelegantly, the wording is unecessarily confusing and circuitous, the problems are nothing more than excercises that merely develop facility with manipulating equations rather than providing solid design skills or fundamental insight, and the presentation is fragmented, poorly motivated and arranged. You can probably learn the material from this book if your background is sufficiently strong, but I would look elsewhere.
exceptional but difficult.......2006-11-23
I used an earlier version of this text in an undergraduate "introduction to analog communication systems" class. I enjoyed it because our curriculum was extremely mathematically rigorous and this book was fully consonant with Professor Sandler's mindset that the only way to fully understand communication systems is to track the signal spectra (or power spectra, as the case may be) through the various nodes in the system. Those who complain that the text is difficult are mathematical milksops who do not deserve EE degrees from the fine institutions that still cling to this arguably obsolescent work, while those who moan about variables not being redefined remind me of the clowns I met in "graduate" school at CWRU who were thrown for a loop because one text used G(j omega) for a transfer function while another used H(j2pi f)--as if the difference amounted to a half-hill of beans. (I admit to arguable obsolescence because Carlson focuses his attention on strict mathematical underpinnings, never mind the real-world systems that have taken command since 1970, when he authored the version of the text that I read.) I withhold my fifth star because, as others have pointed out, there are generous typographical errors here and there, and the book can be considered quite mathematically strenuous for a first course delivered to mathematically challenged "students." I suggest Haykin instead, which adopts a softer tone.
Good sleeping pill.......2006-04-06
The text is unnecessarily lengthy and should not be even used as reference for an introductory course.
Horrible book for communication, great way to fall in sleep.......2004-01-31
I had the (bad) luck of having Dr. Roberts as my professor for Communication Systems.Frankly, his book sucks more than his teaching style. This book is very hard to follow, and its the most boring book ever. Not many useful examples, no detailed explanation of how to solve problems, this book is useless.
Very poorly written text........2003-11-01
I currently use this text in an introductory course to communication systems. I find the text very porrly written with large numbers of errors. The errors are sometimes easy to spot and sometimes rather difficult to find. My professor many times stumbles over the errors. Sometimes it's a battle to understand the examples worked out in the text. A good example of the extent of the errors can be found on page 109 where the authors claim that 35 + 55 - 199.1 + 20 equals -144.1. I thought that such addition was taught in 1st and 2nd grade. A second example is much harder to find such as the + sign instead of a - sign in example 3.5-1 on page 122. I could go on and on with several more examples of egregious errors, but there's not enough room to fit them all. I have written letters to my dean, the editors, and the publisher stating that this book is riddled with many many errors and should be immediately pulled from course materials and publications. If anyone writes a positive review of this book they are either lying, incompetent themselves or had a very good professor who could help them past the errors in the book or avoided using the text as much as possible. If you have a professor who is using this book I recommend you either drop the course or see if the professor is willing to change the text material.

Book Description
Active noise control (ANC) is rapidly becoming the most effective way to reduce noises that can otherwise be very difficult and expensive to control. ANC is achieved by introducing a canceling "anti-noise" wave through an appropriate array of secondary sources. When applied accurately, ANC can provide effective solutions to noise-related problems in a broad range of areas, including manufacturing and industrial operations as well as consumer products. Consequently, ANC research and development has become an important focus of both industrial applications and engineering research.
Active Noise Control Systems: Algorithms and DSP Implementations introduces the basic concepts of ANC with an emphasis on digital signal processing (DSP) hardware and adaptive signal processing algorithms, both of which have come into prominence within the last decade. The authors emphasize the practical aspects of ANC systems by combining the principles of adaptive signal processing with both experimental results and practical implementation. Applications are cited in many fields and encompass all types of noise media, including air-acoustic, hydroacoustic, vibrations, and others. The specific implementation stressed is based on the TMS320 family of signal processors from Texas Instruments, which are the most widely used worldwide.
Coverage of theory includes concise derivations and analyses of commonly used adaptive structures and algorithms for active noise control applications, which are enhanced by the inclusion of a floppy disk featuring C and assembly programs for implementing many ANC systems. Mathematical representations are employed and the source code included on the disk is in a form that is easily accessible to anyone using the book.
For practicing engineers, researchers, and advanced students in signal processing, Active Noise Control Systems: Algorithms and DSP Implementations will serve as a comprehensive, state-of-the-art text/reference on this important and rapidly developing field.
The recent development of digital signal processing (DSP) hardware and adaptive signal processing algorithms has resulted in a dynamic new way of achieving active noise control (ANC). To meet the need for a definitive text on both the basic theory and practical applications of these new ANC techniques, Sen M. Kuo and Dennis R. Morgan have written an invaluable, highly accessible book for researchers, engineers, and advanced students in signal processing.

Review from signal processing View.......2002-12-12
This is an excellent book for persons with signal processing background. The book provides only minimum information about acoustics for a signal processing person and does not confuse with too much of details. In this way, the book makes to reader comfortable. Also many aspects of signal processing which can improve the performance of an active noise control (ANC)system are explained and hence the reader feels more confident that he too can work in this field. This is very much essential as the adaptive algorithms play a crucial role in the ANC implementation. The FXLMS algorithm and its problems are well described. To start with I did not know any thing about ANC, but this book has helped me to get good understanding about it. Presnently, I am able to do research contributions to international journal and to conferences. Further, I have taken up projects at national level in ANC. I feel this book has presented the subject in a simple way retaining all the intricate details. This background enables a reseacher even to follow new developments taking place in this filed. This is a very very useful and excellent book.
review from signal processing view.......2002-12-12
This is an excellent book for the signal processing community as the stress is mainly on algorithms and implementation. A reseacher who wants to work in this field without much background in acoustics, finds this book very useful and it enables him to get to know how he can apply his adaptive signal processing skills to active noise control. This book provides in a simple way the active noise control field and its associated problems. As the book provides only required amount of acoustical details and explains the filtered LMS algorithm very clearly unlike other books, for a beginer it is a very good book. I didn't know any thing aboout ANC when I started, but to day I am able to contribute even to international journals and conferences. Further I have under taken projects at national level from government agencies to develop ANC systems. I feel this book is really well written and it makes the reader keen to know about the subject and provides him high level of confidence. I sincerely recommend this book for any person who is new to this field and has signal processing background. It is a very very very excellent book.
The best reference for ANC algorithms.......1999-08-20
This excellent text is written for advanced study and practicing engineers who need to design controllers for active noise control systems. The emphasis is on the algorithms that are usually implemented in a Digital Signal Processor. The book's treatment of acoustics, sensors, and actuators is not as in-depth as texts by Fuller or Nelson. Included in the book is C and assembly code for the most popular adaptive control techniques, but beware of bugs and patent issues. One of the algorithms covered in detail is the Filtered-X Least Mean Squares technique that one of the Authors (Morgan) help to make popular in the community.
excellent collection of information.......1999-01-02
serves as a valuable tool regarding my project on AN
