The team behind Professional Active Server Pages 2.0 has written a definitive guide for the latest version of ASP included with Windows 2000. This lengthy text offers a comprehensive look at the technology and is geared toward seasoned professionals looking to truly master this important development platform. The team of authors touch on almost every topic a working ASP coder might be interested in, including what to do when "it all goes wrong."

This title is divided into six sections that focus on key aspects of ASP: the basics, ActiveX Data Objects (ADO), building components for ASP, integration with BackOffice, security/performance/scalability, and reference material. This organization makes the book useful for both lengthy reads and quick daily reference. The index and set of appendices are also quite comprehensive.

Code snippets of judicious size and summary boxes with key information such as errors and function calls make the reading productive without being distracting. Most of the material is presented in a structured topical tutorial; however, an excellent XML newspaper case study provides a real-world perspective on XML and ASP.

While a number of working programmers authored this guide, the group's expertise has been well-integrated to read consistently. The team provides some error-preventing programming procedures such as formatting and indenting code, being "Explicit" about declarations, converting variables to the appropriate data types, using good variable naming conventions, encapsulating script, and more. Whether you're looking for information on utilizing components, implementing certificates, or working with Active Directory, you'll find answers in this fine work. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: ASP basics and versions, Active Server Components, ADO, XML data, components, COM/COM+, ASP Script Components, C++ component issues, ADSI and Active Directory, Message Queue Server, Collaboration Data Objects, Exchange Server integration, certificates, performance optimization, site load balancing, and ASP Object Model.

Book Description

This book is about Active Server Pages 3.0, as included with Windows 2000. However, because ASP is now a core part of so many Web-oriented features within Windows, this book covers a far wider area than just how ASP works. ASP is maturing all the time to encompass more integration with other Windows services and software, and so there are many other areas that impinge directly on the use and performance of ASP.

In particular this involves the Windows operating system itself, including the new security features of Windows 2000, and the Internet server software that comes with Windows 2000 - Internet Information Server (IIS). On top of this are the other less obvious services, which also have a direct or indirect effect on the way that ASP works. These include COM+, the various Internet service administration tools, and (indirectly) the many other services and installed software packages that either provide additional functionality to ASP, or which have interfaces that are available for use in ASP.

So, as well as chapters all about the roots of ASP, the base object structure, and how it's used, you'll also see chapters that demonstrate the many different ways that ASP integrates seamlessly with other software and services in Windows. One of the most obvious of these is access to data in a relational database or other type of data store (such as Active Directory), and you'll see several chapters devoted to these topics.

We'll also explore the intimate relationship between Internet Information Server and COM and the new COM+, and see how ASP has changed the way that it hosts and executes external components to provide better performance and scalability. This also affects the way that components are designed and built, and we'll be exploring this topic in some depth as well.

3 out of 5 stars Good for reference, not for studying........2003-12-10

This book covers most of topic you may need. So, you can use it as a reference on ASP3. But it is not for beginner or for studying from a ground. It is quite hard-to-read, not explained in-depth, and it made me quite ???.

5 out of 5 stars Need to know ASP? Get this book........2003-08-01

A bit outdated now with .Net, but I still get this ol' book out once in a while.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST book for classical ASP.......2003-04-23

Obsolete??? Hardly. As I write this review, new Web page technologies are being matured: jsp, php, chm (yech). New models are being matured: Servlets, STRUTS, .NET. Classical ASP 3.0 is still quick, fast and necessary for small to medium businesses, even enterprise-level webpages. There's no better book to learn all the standards, applications, basics, and advanced capabilities of ASP than THIS book.

I love Wrox. I started with their Beginning ASP 2.0 book (how I learned). This book, a bit more advanced but in the beginning level, is still all you need to get things going from single tiered applications to multi-tiered, database driven apps. It goes into COM objects and other MS Services like Index. Really a one-stop book.

With this book and Google you have all the reference you need.

Note: ASP 3.0 is in no way, shape, or form similar to ASP.net.

A small, tiny complaint about this book is that it can be a bit wordy...just a tad. And the index in the back could use a bit more improvement. The info's still in there.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, A True God Send.......2003-04-19

If this book had nothing more than the asptable component in chapter 16, it would still be worth the extremely high price of all wrox press books. But the book has so many useful examples that you can build on.

My only experience has been a few intranets. And I always had bought the beginners series books because I didn't feel I was at the professional level. Well, this book showed me the reason I felt that way was because I didn't know the power of ASP.

If you have been playing around with ASP and really want to move forward, stop playing with the beginners and harness the power of ASP.

4 out of 5 stars good reference book.......2003-02-03

As you I go along developing my web app, this book answers most of my questions, fexample, how to unload/load your application when you want to unload your dll from the application and vice versa. Before finding the answer in this book, I just rebooted the server. Along the way, it always answers my question to perplexing problems that I stumble upon, i.e why isn't my web app preserved the session id.

I have to admit that this is not a book that I would read on spare time. I don't know whether it's the flow of the structure or what. But I always get lost in the "too much" information supplied. Hence I cannot give it 5 stars.

For reference, this is a book to keep if you're developing ASP for one reason; as you become more comfortable with ASP, this book provides answers to your "no-more" beginner questions.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Odysseus turned his eyes from the still-smoking ruins of Troy and thought of home. But the journey would be long to the three-island kingdom of Ithaca, and there would be many dangers to overcome--the Lotus-eaters and the cloying nectar of their deadly fruit; the hungry one-eyed giant
Polyphemus; the stormy wrath of the vengeful sea-god Poseidon; Circe, the beautiful sorceress who turned men into pigs; the terrors of the whirlpool Charybdis and the six-headed sea monster, Scylla; and the descent to the kingdom of Hades, god of the dead--until bright morning he arrived back, alone
and exhausted, to face the hundred fierce suitors of his faithful wife, Penelope.
In this retelling, Geraldine McCaughrean's lively and original style is complemented by Victor Ambrus's brilliant recreations of the ancient world and its monsters and gods. Young people will enjoy the fast-paced and contemporary text, gain an introduction to Homer's classic story, and gain a
foundation for further studies in history and literature that will serve them well into their adult lives.

5 out of 5 stars One eyed monsters- Oh My!.......2006-07-27

My daughter is 5 and will be in Kindergarten this fall. (she turns 6 this November) and she loves this tale. We read almost a full chapter, some are very long for a five year old, every night. The next day, oh yes, I am mean Cyclops, a Lotus Eater, etc. and she is brave Odysseus.(who is part super hero as she ties a towel around her neck! Since she is five and we are Christians I didn't tell her they were "gods" as it would take way more explanation than her dad and I wanted to get into. She first saw a picture of Posieden and thought he was a monster so we went with that. When she's older, we'll get into the Greek god mythology. I do change some of the wording, but not much, as it can get tedious for one so young. Highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars This isn't The Odyssey.......2006-03-22

This is a rewritten version of The Odyssey aimed at kids, not the orginal version written by Homer. Don't buy this unless you want the version written for 10 year olds.

The ASP 3.0 Programmer's Reference is a well-organized compilation of essential information about the latest version of Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP). It covers ASP development on the Windows 2000 platform and includes full coverage of the various new Microsoft technologies at the disposal of an ASP 3.0 developer.

In addition to the expected documentation of the ASP objects, the book provides overviews of a wide array of related objects and architectures that developers need to know about. These topics are peripheral to the actual ASP architecture, yet they are valuable for experienced ASP programmers.

At the heart of the book is the documentation of the ASP object model. Each object is introduced briefly, followed by coverage of each property and method it supports. Provided are code examples for nearly every method and property, but often only a couple of lines illustrating usage. There're no needlessly fluffy examples here.

Although its title implies a narrow focus, this book provides much more than a simple language reference. ASP developers will find it useful time and again as they explore the new features of the vast Microsoft development architecture. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered:

Book Description

ASP 3.0 Programmer's Reference relates to ASP 3.0 as included with Windows 2000. However, because ASP is now a core part of so many Web-oriented features within Windows, this book covers a far wider area than just the ASP syntax, properties, methods and events. Windows 2000 is a big operating system, in other words, it is functionally rich and bundled with numerous applications and services that enable you and your applications to do lots of different things with very little effort. For example, with Windows 2000 you can use IIS5 as your web server, you can use Active Directory to share enterprise-wide information, you can Message Queue Services to create applications that can work in a disconnected or a connected mode etc. Therefore, a properly equipped ASP programmer needs to have more than just ASP reference material close at hand to function effectively in this environment. ASP 3.0 Programmer's Reference also covers Components, Active Directory, XML, ADO, Messaging and Collaboration Services, VBScript, JScript and much more making it the complete ASP programmer's desktop companion.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2003-02-04

Not only is it below average in cost, it is by far the best ASP book I have ever seen. Every topic has a VBScript and JScript example. It is much more than a reference manual. This is the way EVERY computer language book should be written.

4 out of 5 stars great reference if you already know basic ASP.......2002-10-04

I use this book all the time. In fact, so much that I hardly ever put it back on my bookshelf. It is a great reference for anyone who basically knows ASP but needs to occasionally look up how some part of how ASP works. I was self-taught ASP, and just learned how to do different things as I needed them. This book's biggest strength is that it shows you ASP in the big picture of the object model, which I never really grasped until I got this book.

This book is NOT a book on VBScript and is NOT an introduction to programming ASP. If you have even a little ASP experience, this book will serve as a valuable reference to looking up how to do specific tasks, but it won't help you until you at least know basically what you are looking for.

This book, and the MSDN VBScript library online, are virtually the only references to ASP that I use.

5 out of 5 stars Much More Than Just an ASP Reference.......2002-07-09

Wrox is selling itself short on this one. Not only is it a great reference for ASP (lots of good examples and explanations), there are also several equally good chapters on ADO, CDO, XML, XLST, ADSI, MSMQ and Transactions. I've used it as a reference for these other topics as much or more than I've used it as an ASP reference.

5 out of 5 stars Extravagant Reference.......2001-11-02

If you are intermediate to advance ASP Programmer, don't buy others book. Enough to have this book. Excellent reference.

5 out of 5 stars Must have ASP reference.......2001-07-19

Let's face it, no ASP programmer can remember it all, so having a handy-dandy reference book that cuts to the chase is a must. This book does just that, and then some. I turn to it all the time(mostly because I can't stand the MS online doc). A great companion to this book is Proffesional Active Server Pages 3.0, goes into more depth and more examples. Also, Beginning ASP Databases and SQL in 10 minutes was very helpful. Using mostly these four books, I've been able to develop several full blown, database driven ASP web sites.

3 out of 5 stars Would have been much better if written in 2007.......2007-08-26

Let me preface this review by noting that I came to Pharr's text after I had acquired a good, working knowledge of Biblical Greek. Homeric Greek and Biblical Greek are vastly different in their vocabulary but fairly similar in their grammar and syntax and I anticipated that working through Pharr would have been easy.

However, I found it slow and difficult going and Pharr's text presupposes that a teacher will be working with the student. The text is old--from about 1920--and the additions by John Wright are few. The text reflects teaching methods that are nearly a century old. Since then, several new and better methods of teaching Greek and of vocabulary acquisition have been developed. I have found the teaching methods developed by William Mounce and Daniel Wallace and the organization of their textbooks to be superb for learning Biblical Greek. Pharr's approach is decidedly outdated and inefficient by comparison.

Instead of learning the vocabulary by the frequency the words appear in the Iliad, the student must learn all of the words as they come up, line by line, in the text, no matter how infrequently they occur throughout the Homeric corpus as a whole. I found that I had to supplement Pharr's vocabulary lessons with Owen and Goodspeed's "Homeric Vocabularies," which are arranged by frequency of occurrence. In addition, the text is based on a line by line presentation of the Iliad, and the student is forced to deal with the various noun cases and verb tenses and moods before they are formally taught in the text. Fortunately, I had a good working knowledge of at least one dialect of Ancient Greek before going in; had I been an absolute neophyte to the Greek language it would have been very difficult to do without an instructor. The rules of grammar and syntax are poorly explained and presuppose a knowledge of both English and Latin grammar. Intense memorization is required, reflecting the "drill method" of teaching of a century ago. Compared to Mounce's approach, which is like a guided set of swimming lessons by lifeguards at the YMCA, Pharr's approach is to take the student and throw her/him out in the middle of the lake. This book will present a great challenge to the autodidact. I am quite certain that had I not already known Koine Greek, I would never have been able to learn Homeric Greek with Pharr alone and I am good with languages.

What the student of Homeric Greek really needs is for someone to make a William Mounce-style learning package: a textbook of Homeric Greek, organized logically by Mounce's system, a workbook with exercises in translation, vocabulary cards, audio CD's and interactive CD-ROMs. Only then will Homeric Greek be accessible to the devoted autodidact. Until then, we'll have to make do with Pharr.

If you have never previously studied a foreign language don't even bother with Pharr.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-23

Pharr's Homeric Greek has much going for it. It is an old-style grammar, however, and one must be prepared for a different version of user-friendliness. No, there are no cute comicbook characters or a made-up story about a family caught up in the conflict, a la Athenaze or, on the Latin side, Ecce Romani. On the other hand, the book conserves space by placing all paradigms in the back of the book. This feature forces students to review more thoroughly than grammars that present paradigms piecemeal throughout the body of the text. The introduction contains an interesting argument for teaching Homeric Greek in a child's first year of Greek study, rather than the more traditional Attic Greek. The book is reasonably sturdy, for a paperback. John Wright revised the book lightly, mainly taking out material a modern student would not use or need.

What do I like about it? Each lesson presents a manageable amount of vocabulary and focuses on a single point of grammar. Once the student starts reading real Homer, the passages of poetry are preceded by prose sentences for review of new vocabulary and grammar. A teacher might assign these as homework, after a sufficient amount of in-class review, and have students read the Homeric passage at sight the following day. I also like the suggestion that students memorize the first 21 lines of the poem. Few things enliven a dead party like the ability to recite long passages of poetry in a dead language. Doing so drunk merely adds to the charm!

Finally, the book does not confuse students about its aim: the goal is the ability to read Homer's Greek. This straightforwardness arises from a confidence that most modern texts lack: modern editors seem to feel students won't bother with the language unless the cup is sweetened with loosely written and shallow 'essays' on Greek culture.

A very useful ancillary text is Homeric Vocabularies: Greek and English Word List for the Study of Homer.

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginners...immediate access to the Iliad.......2005-02-27

This book has helped me realize a lifelong dream-- to read Homer in the original Greek. This book is a reprint, with some revision, of a text used in the early part of the 20th century. It is not, as far as I can tell "watered down" and the vocabulary started with words that allow the learner to begin reading the Iliad almost immediately. The practice lessons are sentences that relate to the first lines of the Iliad. Both Greek->English and English-> Greek are provided. The first half of the book are the lessons and explanation, the last half is a grammar and usage. The lessons take the learner through the first book of the Iliad. You begin actually reading and translating the first five lines in Lesson XIII. The author also spends times explaining the scansion of the Iliad so that the learner can begin to "hear" the Iliad as well as read it. Although Attic Greek is different from Homeric Greek, I found Teach Yourself Ancient Greek: a Complete Course helpful in clarifying some of the explanations of the grammar and syntax. This book is also available from Amazon. In fact, I don't suppose I would be reading Greek now if I hadn't discovered Amazon (pardon the plug, but I'm hooked!). Finding the complete Iliad can be a challenge. I finally located it at Harvard University Press: Greek and English on facing pages. Join the new Renaissance made possible by the Internet and read the real Homer. It is, to use a common expression, awesome!

3 out of 5 stars Not Ideal for the Solo Learner.......2004-12-26

The best thing about this book is the introductory article explaining why Homeric Greek should be the first type of ancient Greek that a student should be exposed to. Of course the incredible quality of certain New Testament Greek introductory grammars provide, in my opinion, a more practical introductory source. They claim that classical Attic is usually a student's first dialect and that Xenophon's Anabasis is normally a student's first text, and that this is a bad choice because Homer is more interesting to prospective classics students and more relevant in terms of its effect on classical culture and world literature. They also make the point that Homeric Greek is easier than Attic and a more appropriate stepping stone. Against this argument one can say that there is no text more culturally relevant than the New Testament, and that New Testament Koine is both easier than Attic and more similar to it than the Homeric form.

As a grammar, this book is inferior to, say, Bill Mounce's Basics of Biblical Greek. The print is small and often unclear, and the lessons are peculiar in their organization. The beginning of the book consists of graduated lessons that contain little instruction, but merely references to other paragraphs in the later part of the book where grammatical information is presented. This makes the book very flexible for a Greek teacher, who can choose to edit the content of each lesson. The text can also serve as a useful reference tool, as the informative section of the book is organized like a reference grammar.

I really can't knock the book, as Homer is a good medium for introductory Greek, and this work makes an innovative attempt to provide both a classroom textbook and a reference grammar. My chief complaint is that I have always been self-taught. The book really requires a teacher to relate its rather unfriendly declension and conjugation tables and tie together the rather odd organization. It just isn't working for me like Bill Mounce's Basics of Biblical Greek, or even David Mastonarde's Intruduction to Attic Greek in terms of organization and clarity.

If you have a good teacher and a good classroom environment to work with, Homer makes a great study of basic Greek. For the self-learner, stick with the Koine Greek of the New Testament. It is an easier form of Greek and the text is interesting and relevant for all types of readers. The variety of New Testament writers makes for a more diverse sample of Greek forms. Finally, there are a larger number of higher quality learning materials available, and there is a greater access to distance education courses.

Apart from all this, though, I have to say that I haven't found any introductory grammar devoted exclusively to Homer other than this one. If you want to read Homer in the original, you are going to want this book. It does a decent job of showing the idiosyncrasies of the Homeric dialect.

I would give this book four stars in terms of use in a classroom. It is a little tough for self-teaching, though, so I only gave it three.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully retold story of Odysseus.......2007-05-10

I read this book to my 7 year old, homeschooled daughter. Her children's choir is singing the story of Odysseus and this book brought the songs to life for her. She never wanted me to put it down. The language is sophisticated but she could follow the story and was entranced by it.

2 out of 5 stars Homer for Children Today!.......2007-03-27

Ho hum--I will never get my 5th grader to read this tome--however moving the story line and imagery. It is too thick to easily add to a history block of Ancient Civilizations around the world. The language is too dated. The narrations dwarfs the action. The standard, for good youth literature today, requires writers to SHOW the meaning and NOT TELL IT.
Thankfully, author Geraldine McCaughrean wrote a wonderfully telling of GILGAMESH, so I turned around and ordered her retelling of Homer's THE ILLIAD and THE ODYSSEY which is titled, ODYSSEUS.

Does anyone want my copy of Padric's version. The cover art is great.

4 out of 5 stars The Children's Homer.......2007-03-22

As a homeschooled child, I read this book when I was eight and thoroughly enjoyed it; now, at fifteen, I have just finished reading the original Iliad and Odyssey for the second time. Reading them made me realize how much The Children's Homer helped me, both in exposing me to the epics and giving me a basic overview of the story. My only complaint was that it lacked the strength and beauty of the original, but that is understandable.
I would also recommend The Greek Way (Edith Hamilton) as an excellent look into ancient Greek philosophy and philosophers. I read this in the same course as The Children's Homer and it has become my favorite history book-children will enjoy it, but parents had best let them read it to themselves; it is unfair for parents to monopolize children's books.

4 out of 5 stars A classic brought to life even for children.......2007-02-27

Three cheers: for Padraic Colum, who was a natural storyteller and interpreter of the ancient myths; for Dover Publications, who offers this reprint and other classics dirt cheap (Dover editions are generally five bucks or less); and for the parent who loves these stories and can read them intelligently to young children.

Parents: there are many, many things in these kinds of stories that will not be self-evident to children if they are not explained: language, relationships, cause and effect, the Greek pantheon, etc. You must, as appropriate, stop and talk things over with your child. It will be a better reading experience for the both of you, and it will do wonders for your child.

My son, knowing that Odysseus was finally going to confront the wooers of this wife Penelope, was besides himself with excitement as the tension mounted. He did not mind at all the side diversions into other stories--by this time he understands that the ancient Greeks told stories within stories within stories (they didn't have TV! or the Internet!). His patience paid off, and Colum's description of the final scene was most satisfying. This, together with Colum's telling of the legend of the Golden Fleece, Jason, and the Argonauts (available in another Dover edition--see my Amazon review), are highly recommended as a superb introduction to these classic tales.

5 out of 5 stars Most influential book of my childhood.......2007-01-29

As a kid, I loved this book.

As a young adult, I've gone to college and become a Classics major. Now I'm reading the Aeneid in Latin, and I've really begun to appreciate what a wonderful book this is!

I have no way of judging this book's suitability for "kids in general." For me, though, this book instilled a love of mythology and history that has stayed with me through my life so far. I strongly suggest it!

4 out of 5 stars Tom Sawyer redux.......2007-06-12

When one is expecting their first child, one often reminisces about their own childhood. In my case, this means going over the books I have read, to see which ones I want to buy for my first child. This is one of the few books I remember reading in elementary school. Now as an adult revisiting this book, I am struck by how similar it is to another classic children's tale; The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Whereas the latter was based in the deep South, this one occurs in a small village in the Midwest at the turn of the 20th century. The stories are more outlandish, but the text is simpler and accessible to younger kids than Tom Sawyer. All told, great entertainment and certainly better than watching TV.

    4 out of 5 stars A Hilarious Book.......2007-06-04

The book I read was Homer Price by Robert McClousky. This book is about a boy named Homer in the 1940's to the 1950's. Homer is an average twelve-year-old boy with a mind of curiosity. Homer Price is a book where you can close your eyes and it makes it feel like everything is real. Homer Price is a book that makes you feel like you are there when it happens.
In the beginning of the book Homer is on the verge of catching robbers. As you read the book you meet new people and places around their town. This book has no set plot, but is very interesting at times. The author makes the book so there are books inside of just one book. This book really doesn't have a theme. This book is a comedy/comic book. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a good laugh.

I bought this for my eight year son and he adored it. I remember loving it when I was a child and I was hoping it wasn't "out dated". Part of the beauty of the book is that you get a glimpse of earlier times and the humor and spark are timeless. It is a joy to be able to share a book that you enjoyed and explore all over again with a child. The stories are fantastic, a true treasured classic.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly thorough.......2007-09-24

The important details of every Book are explained and analyzed, not very much in-depth but deeply enough to give a basic understanding of what's going on, why, and how it might be interpreted. I had read the Odyssey twice in the past (and remembered almost nothing), so this was a great way to refresh my memory without having to read the epic for the third time for a course.

It is not intended to replace reading the actual epic, but it does help make it more accessible to all. Good work.

5 out of 5 stars TURNED "ROCKET SCIENCE" to Reading Ease.......2001-04-08

Homer's The Odyessey is a drudgery to read not to mention understand. This book took the pain and bordom of that and shortned it to a 1 hour (45 if your a fast reader) book that keeps all the details (for your reading pleasure) and explains the importance of each section in relations to High School which actually helps a ton. (pulled my grade on this from the usual B to A thanks to this book).

This is a great way to help you better understand the book. While it does not take the place of the book it is a really good learning tool,
