SQL Cookbook (Cookbooks (O'Reilly))
Anthony Molinaro Manufacturer: O'Reilly Media, Inc. ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0596009763 |
Book Description
You know the rudiments of the SQL query language, yet you feel you aren't taking full advantage of SQL's expressive power. You'd like to learn how to do more work with SQL inside the database before pushing data across the network to your applications. You'd like to take your SQL skills to the next level.
Let's face it, SQL is a deceptively simple language to learn, and many database developers never go far beyond the simple statement: SELECT
Written in O'Reilly's popular Problem/Solution/Discussion style, the SQL Cookbook is sure to please. Anthony's credo is: "When it comes down to it, we all go to work, we all have bills to pay, and we all want to go home at a reasonable time and enjoy what's still available of our days." The SQL Cookbook moves quickly from problem to solution, saving you time each step of the way.

Steven Feuerstein takes care to explain, with prose and example code, the characteristics of PL/SQL elements. In explaining number conversions, for example, he explores Oracle's different ways of formatting numbers, then details the behavior of the to_number function under different conditions (with and without a specified format model, and with National Language Support information attached). It's a helpful approach that will have readers using the index to locate places in which Feuerstein mentions language elements of interest. --David Wall
Topics covered: How to use Oracle PL/SQL in all its manifestations through Oracle9i. Fundamentals of program structure (loops, cases, exceptions, etc.) and execution get attention, as do data types, transaction management, triggers, and the object-oriented aspects of the language. There's also coverage of calls to external Java and C programs.
Book Description
The fourth edition is a comprehensive update, adding significant new content and extending coverage to include the very latest Oracle version, Oracle Database 10g Release 2. It describes such new features as the PL/SQL optimizing compiler, conditional compilation, compile-time warnings, regular expressions, set operators for nested tables, nonsequential collections in FORALL, the programmer-defined quoting mechanism, the ability to backtrace an exception to a line number, a variety of new built-in packages, and support for IEEE 754 compliant floating-point numbers. The new edition adds brand-new chapters on security (including encryption, row-level security, fine-grained auditing, and application contexts), file, email, and web I/O (including the built-in packages DBMS_OUTPUT, UTL_FILE, UTL_MAIL, UTL_SMTP, and UTL_HTTP) and globalization and localization. Co-authored by the world's foremost PL/SQL authority, Steven Feuerstein, this classic reference provides language syntax, best practices, and extensive code, ranging from simple examples to complete applications--making it a must-have on your road to PL/SQL mastery. A companion web site contains many more examples and additional technical content for enhanced learning.

Book Description
This book will help you make the best use of Oracle technology. Emulating Tom's rational methodology, and demand for proof-by-example, will make you a far better technology thinker. Without question, this is one of the most importantly Oracle books you can possess. — Ken Jacobs, Vice President of Product Strategy (Server Technologies), Oracle Corporation This is a defining book on the Oracle database for any developer or DBA who works with Oracle-driven database applications. Tom has a simple philosophy: you can treat Oracle as a black box and just stick data into it or you can understand how it works and exploit it as a powerful computing environment. If you choose the latter, then you will find that there are few information management problems that you cannot solve quickly and elegantly. Expert Oracle Database Architecture is the first of a three-book series that completely explores and defines the Oracle database. It covers all of the most important Oracle architecture features, including: Each feature is taught in a proof-by-example manner, not only discussing what it is, but also how it works, how to implement software using it, and the common pitfalls associated with it. This fully revised edition covers both the 9i and 10g versions. It also comes with a CD containing a searchable PDF of the 8i version of the book. Tom has fully revised and expanded the architecture-related sections from Expert One-on-One Oracle (a searchable PDF of which is included on the CD accompanying this book), and added substantial new material. He focuses solely on 9i and 10g architecture in this book and refers to the CD for 8i-specific details. The number of changes will surprise you. In summary, this book provides a one-stop resource containing deep wisdom on the design, development and administration of Oracle applications, written by one of the world's foremost Oracle experts, Thomas Kyte.

WHERE
It is real cook book.......2007-08-03
Instead of inventing all the time "bicycle" I can use this book in my everyday work and concentrate on more important things in my projects.
MS SQL Server must be 2005.......2007-06-26
Mind-expanding.......2007-05-09
The "recipies" are well explained and almost entirely practical and useful. This book showed me dozens of things I did not ever think of using SQL for, even though I have the BNF for SQL pretty much in my head after more than 18 years of being a practicing programmer.
Before this book I used to recommend "generic" SQL books to students and newbies because such books apply to virtually all SQL databases and it can be harmful for one to use a specific "dialect" (such as Oracle or SQL Server) that won't port to other SQL databases. I would urge people to learn "generic" SQL. You can always add the features of you specific dialect, but it is hard to give up features you assume will be in all dialects.
This book neatly avoids that problem by providing dialect-specific sections when you can or must code differently for a particular database. Even better, they explain the differences and the pros and cons of those differences. So this book can even be an aid to selecting the "right" database for your application.
I happen to be a fan of Open Source and Free Software and I'm pleased to say that this book covers both MySQL and PostgreSQL. Naturally it provides the "big three" of Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and IBM's DB2.
This book really opened my eyes to possibilities in SQL that I really didn't know existed in spite of the fact that I have been using the language (apparently without mastering it) for almost two decades.
I still recommend using a "generic SQL" book to learn the basics, but this should literally be ordered at the same time. It is the best of the "Cookbook" series that I have seen. (And I have used the Java Cookbook, Perl Cookbook, and Python Cookbook).
Too long; get the Sams 10 minute series.......2007-04-13
Everything you need.......2007-01-09
But even if you are just starting out, you can get started right away with writing commands. And since this book covers the major SQL formats, you won't be left out. I bought this book because an application uses Oracle and I was able to do what I needed to do. The great thing about the cookbook series is that you don't have to go through alot of text to get what you want. You find your problem and apply the solution.
Great book!!!

Forget it - RTFM.......2007-03-13
I have tried a few times to use this as a reference, but each time it takes me about 3 pages to hit a deadend because of some question or situation that the book fails to address. In each case I have had to figuring it out for myself from the standard documentation/google etc.
The authors consistently fail to deliver the two things I look for in technical books:
(1) provide the insights on "why is it so?" - the explanation, mental models, frameworks that help readers move from just learning syntax to a deeper level of understanding. I want to read and learn from authors who are sufficiently skilled in their field with the powers of introspection and communication, who have put the time and effort to deeply consider a subject before turning their learnings into a book.
(2) supplement the existing body of knowledge with new knowledge or at least a new organisation of knowledge that facilitates learning or understanding.
I have had the same reaction to other titles in the Osborne Oracle Press series; I thought I'd give this a go but now sorry I did. In future there is no place for these books in my shopping cart!

It has a simple concept, but a great variety of commands, by this way, as a solution for all the complexity inside the RMAN solution, Oracle Database 10g RMAN Backup & Recovery come as a special "friend" to help us discovering all posibilities inside Oracle RMAN software.
Makes backup & recovery ezeee.......2007-08-14
Worth it's weight in Gold!.......2007-06-30
What Robert and Matthew do is break it down piece by piece. There is a great intro and they build on that in subsequent chapters. If you want to link RMAN directly with your backup software (i.e. Veritas, EMC, Legato, etc..) then the authors show you how. I used the Veritas piece to link RMAN in and it worked flawlessly. They go over the latest features including block changing files (for faster incremental backups), merging level 1 and level 0 backups (for faster recoveries without the overhead of backing up the whole database), and even cover what the flash recovery area is and how to use it. There is so much great material packed in this book. Yeah, you can try and read Oracle's docs, but rather than just show you how to do it, the authors also teach you why to do it.
You can read this book chronologically or use it as a reference. The authors writing style make this book a great joy to read. They also include a lot of great examples in case you like to learn by seeing.
I would highly recommend this book if you are an Oracle DBA, whether you use RMAN or not. Afterall, RMAN is what you should be using :).
Must have backup/recovery book.......2007-06-19
A very good book on RMAN.......2007-05-07

Great book.......2007-09-19
Tom is an author full of humor with a versatile approach to performance. In his book he shows his approach to performance and put light on common practice like database independence and read-write consistency or like constraints enforced by triggers and autonomous transaction.
No doubt I learned a lot in this book!

Very Good Oracle Architecture Reference Manual.......2007-06-11
Very technical but not to the point that brain freeze occurs.
Would highly recommend it.
Oracle architecture explained simply.......2007-05-11
1. It is not a manual for an Oracle administrator. For example it does not contain anything about Oracle installation, troubleshooting, backing up or restoring a database.
2. It is not a SQL or PL/SQL reference, neither it is a introduction to databases. You have to know a significant deal about databases already for the book to make effect.
3. It is not an optimization guide. You will not find execution plans and configuration parameters here.
What is it then ?
It is an extensive coverage of Oracle internals - its files, memory structures, processes, undo/redo, tables, indexes and data types. Plus it explains Oracle's approach to transactions, locking and concurrency. On top of it, a couple of chapters offer you a view to partitioning and parallel execution being another very specific tools.
The book introduces you the Oracle ultimate goal of building highly concurrent database applications and then walks you through its internal details to show how to achieve it in the applications you build.
The book strikes the right balance so as not to go deep into unnecessary bit flags and names of undocumented variables, but clearly explain the architecture of the engine. The architecture (also mentioned in the title) is the "whiteboard" kind of architecture - the one you can sketch on a whiteboard with a couple of boxes and a few arrows, which is just right in this case.
The target audience for this book is anyone who develops applications with Oracle as the database back end. It is a book for professional Oracle developers who need to know how to get things done in the database. The practical nature of the book means that many sections should also be very interesting to the DBA.
The author is undoubtedly an expert, who has been working for Oracle for 15 years, with Oracle for even longer and has been consulting for God knows how many years. He also sticks to an honest, pragmatical and straightforward approach - there is not a single "enter Oracle, hold your breath" word.
The inspiration for the material contained in this book comes from my experiences developing Oracle software, and from working with fellow Oracle developers and helping them build reliable and robust applications based on the Oracle database. The book is basically a reflection of what I do every day and of the issues I see people encountering each and every day.
Like the other good books out there, it just gives you something to think about. Avoiding rules of thumb,
This is one of the main reasons why rules of thumb do not work on real-world systems: what works for you might not work for others in similar but different conditions.
it gives you the invaluable knowledge you could apply to your work. It is up to you to apply it afterwards.
Written very clearly, very easy to understand, nice trimmed examples, no screenshots. Highly recommended reading.
Such a practially useful book!.......2007-05-07
It does not talk about the theories and principles of Oracle, like all other thousands of "ordinary" books do. By reading those books you know "WHAT" Oracle is, but you don't easily relate it to your own business - when you face a certain problem, what you should do? What you should avoid? While this book addresses this domain.
I found reading each page and chapter virtually fun! I am not a computer nut who have no friends and family and work before his computer 18 hours a day. Yet I have fun and smiles every now and then when reading this Oracle book! Amazing!

Great Book.......2007-06-28
Treats the core 20% like rest of the 80%.......2007-06-07
I think 3 things about ORACLE RAC are essential and perhaps the most important part of RAC knowledge. They are the architecture, the installation (not that simple), and the administration. Approximately 20% of the book is dedicated to the 3 core topics.
To his credit, the author does provide some fine examples and detailed knowledge on many esotoric aspects of RAC. For example, I have found his insights into DBMS and DGMRL packages related to RAC very helpful.

Best RAC book.......2007-01-06
I have two years Oracle 10g RAC experience, but I have found in this book very valuable information about how RAC works, what is behind all components and all kind of "inside information" one could not find in Oracle documentation.
Except some typos (understandable, given the rush to print a good book about RAC) this book is clearly a BUY.

This is THE PL/SQL BOOK.......2007-08-24
Good, but could be much better.......2007-07-07
I invested a lot of time in reading this book and after it was all said and done my feeling on it was, meh, I guess I learned something. The book is pretty good, it's just needlessly big, too big and time consuming for the value that it brings to your skill set.
Poorly Written for a Book on Programming.......2007-06-25
The book is written more as a corporate training manual than that of a programming text book. As probably everyone who ever took a training class from their company knows, training is often done by people who not only are not educators, but may not actually understand or have even used the subject of the training. It is intentional that such people do not state the concepts abstractly - they only know concrete examples and maybe only the example in their pre-written material.
This book fits this description to a T. It does not specify the correct syntax except in examples. It does not specify the qualifications and conditions governing the language elements or the examples. As such, unless you are essentially copying an example almost verbatim, you have no real knowledge of whether your code will compile, let alone work as intended. As an example consider their discussion of SELECT statements. They speak about the Select clause, the INTO clause, etc. Nowhere do they state that the list of items in the INTO clause should separated by commas. Although most people could correctly guess that the comma is the separator, you need to find an example to show you that. The book is rampant with omissions like this. Two pages later, they use an OPEN - FOR construct in an example without introducing it. That it can be used dynamically, i.e. with the query in a character string constructed at run time, is not only not mentioned in this section, but is not even mentioned in the chapter on Dynamic SQL.
This should be looked upon as a book of (simple) examples. It should be no one's text or reference.
Its more than my expectation.......2007-01-29
So far what I felt in most of the chapters, it really require previous background on the topics Or it takes little more time to cover some areas (new features).
Not for a beginner.......2006-11-12
