Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good coaching........2007-09-23

I passed OCA exam thanks to this book and with a little help of SelfTest software.
Very good writing. Authors definitely know the subject practically.
It is a good reading on Oracle RDBMS internals. And more entertaining than the Oracle Concepts Guide.
Again - their writing style is excellent, they do not over-complicate things and manage to explain complicated subjects simply and clearly.
I wish they wrote something on efficient oracle design :).

5 out of 5 stars Good OCP guide.......2007-05-12

This book is very good not just for clearing OCP but also reference for novice as well as experienced DBAs . The authors have covered the exam syllabus very concisely without leaving anything yet keeping the volume to a minimum .
However for the part 2 exam , one might have to read oracle manuals thoroughly especially for resource management and scheduler concepts .
The pratice test CD that comes with the book is very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for certification.......2007-05-12

As i saw, before buying this book, it's an excellent and complete reading for those interested in acomplish the certification. Don't forget to do all of the exercises!

Good reading

4 out of 5 stars Easy to follow, a lot of examples and self-tests.......2007-03-11

It is an excellent opportunity to get ready for the exam. Even if you are not familiar with the RDBMS concepts, this book will help you to get ready for your OCP. A lot of examples and exercises in a book easy to read is complemented with a set of self-test exams in the CD ROM making this the complete tool to get your OCP.

4 out of 5 stars very good, i recommend it.......2007-03-20

i consider it a good idea for studing to OCA exam test. Even if you have not experience with Oracle databae, it is recommended for beginers.

i recommend to read it more than one time, because there are so much details to know at the exam... practice a lot

the book cover all the topics presented by the Exam

4 out of 5 stars almost complete for oca+ocp .......2007-02-06

i have got my oca last year and my ocp just last month, utilizing these two books and the ocp 10g all-in-one exam guide from john & damir. these two books have a quite complete coverage of the materials in oca and ocp 10g exams, which means it sometimes covers more than needed to pass the exam. in one way it is good for our knowledge, but it sometimes could be frustating because of the long chapters (need two books to pass ocp instead of one book with john/damir book). i would suggest however to still get the john/damir book in addition to this one to pass the oca/ocp exam (like i did), for the sake of completeness and chapter organizations. these two books have rather unique chapter structures (not aligned with oracle admin I and admin II training materials), for instance there are three chapters in the admin II training that combined into one chapter of the second book. overall it is still a good reference not just for 10g oca/ocp exam, but also for your oracle 10g knowledge in general.

5 out of 5 stars 10g certification.......2007-01-10

Well written, clear and easy to read.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good for the basics.......2007-08-24

This book is excellent to know the basics of the Oracle 10g Administration, as its name says, is a complete reference about the whole database software, includes a big part of PL/SQL and complete chapters about tuning tips and security, It's a must for an Oracle DBA, but I put only 4 stars because I think Lonely tried to cover a lot of things in this book, and obvious, it only mention the keys for eache point; and if you want the complete solution for one topic, you need to consult other resureces like OTN. Whatever, is an excelent reference.

5 out of 5 stars Oracle Database 10g The Complete Reference.......2007-05-14

Price about $20 less than Borders. Like the book says "it is a complete reference". Very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2007-01-27

This is the best book about Oracle 10g I have ever used. It can be read from one end to the other getting comprehensive knowledge of Oracle features. Or you can use it as a reference looking up just in one chapter. Each chapter is independent and clearly explain about the topic in such a manner that you can easily understand it even if you have not read the rest of the book.

I would say this is a must have book if your going to use Oracle 10g. As some one else said it is not a book about configuration, it is a book about the features.

4 out of 5 stars Object-relational features coverage.......2007-01-09

I purchased this book as a reference to O-R features in Oracle. Loney covers O-R features in about 4 chapters or so. I thought the coverage provided a good introduction, but lacked the depth I expected. I found more methods and details in the Oracle online reference manual.

5 out of 5 stars Kevin Loney's Oracle Database References.......2006-11-05

I have used Kevin Loney's texts, both the Reference and the DBA editions on Oracle database from the heady Oracle 7 days and have found them to be most acurate, complete and exceptionally easy to use and to quickly locate required materials. The examples given are very clear and they work!
The 10g texts are remarkable in their coverage and clarity. Many thanks Kevin and keep up the good work !

Book Description

You know the rudiments of the SQL query language, yet you feel you aren't taking full advantage of SQL's expressive power. You'd like to learn how to do more work with SQL inside the database before pushing data across the network to your applications. You'd like to take your SQL skills to the next level.

Let's face it, SQL is a deceptively simple language to learn, and many database developers never go far beyond the simple statement: SELECT FROM WHERE . But there is so much more you can do with the language. In the SQL Cookbook, experienced SQL developer Anthony Molinaro shares his favorite SQL techniques and features. You'll learn about:

 • Window functions, arguably the most significant enhancement to SQL in the past decade. If you're not using these, you're missing out
 • Powerful, database-specific features such as SQL Server's PIVOT and UNPIVOT operators, Oracle's MODEL clause, and PostgreSQL's very useful GENERATE_SERIES function
 • Pivoting rows into columns, reverse-pivoting columns into rows, using pivoting to facilitate inter-row calculations, and double-pivoting a result set
 • Bucketization, and why you should never use that term in Brooklyn.
 • How to create histograms, summarize data into buckets, perform aggregations over a moving range of values, generate running-totals and subtotals, and other advanced, data warehousing techniques
 • The technique of walking a string, which allows you to use SQL to parse through the characters, words, or delimited elements of a string

Written in O'Reilly's popular Problem/Solution/Discussion style, the SQL Cookbook is sure to please. Anthony's credo is: "When it comes down to it, we all go to work, we all have bills to pay, and we all want to go home at a reasonable time and enjoy what's still available of our days." The SQL Cookbook moves quickly from problem to solution, saving you time each step of the way.

5 out of 5 stars It is real cook book.......2007-08-03

I am completely satisfied with this book.
Instead of inventing all the time "bicycle" I can use this book in my everyday work and concentrate on more important things in my projects.

4 out of 5 stars MS SQL Server must be 2005.......2007-06-26

This is a great product but some of the advanced features weren't available in SQL Server 2000. I really liked the windowing and hierarchical queries in this book but those features are not available in 2000. For the most part 2000 isn't used that often anymore but if you are one of the unfortunate to have to use it there will be some compatibility problems with the examples in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Mind-expanding.......2007-05-09

It doesn't take long to learn the basics of SQL. Once you start to do multi-table joins and you get to sub-selects and outer joins you can almost convince yourself you are an expert. Trust me. You aren't. I've read at least ten books on using SQL. This is the first one to blow my horizons away and open a completely new landscape.

The "recipies" are well explained and almost entirely practical and useful. This book showed me dozens of things I did not ever think of using SQL for, even though I have the BNF for SQL pretty much in my head after more than 18 years of being a practicing programmer.

Before this book I used to recommend "generic" SQL books to students and newbies because such books apply to virtually all SQL databases and it can be harmful for one to use a specific "dialect" (such as Oracle or SQL Server) that won't port to other SQL databases. I would urge people to learn "generic" SQL. You can always add the features of you specific dialect, but it is hard to give up features you assume will be in all dialects.

This book neatly avoids that problem by providing dialect-specific sections when you can or must code differently for a particular database. Even better, they explain the differences and the pros and cons of those differences. So this book can even be an aid to selecting the "right" database for your application.

I happen to be a fan of Open Source and Free Software and I'm pleased to say that this book covers both MySQL and PostgreSQL. Naturally it provides the "big three" of Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and IBM's DB2.

This book really opened my eyes to possibilities in SQL that I really didn't know existed in spite of the fact that I have been using the language (apparently without mastering it) for almost two decades.

I still recommend using a "generic SQL" book to learn the basics, but this should literally be ordered at the same time. It is the best of the "Cookbook" series that I have seen. (And I have used the Java Cookbook, Perl Cookbook, and Python Cookbook).

1 out of 5 stars Too long; get the Sams 10 minute series.......2007-04-13

Too long at 600 pages. Sure you'll understand SQL if you go through all 600 pages and understand them well. Heck that's true for any subject, including the Qu'ran. But who'se got the time? Get the Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes, Third Edition - Ben Forta; and in about a day you'll be half way towards mastery. But if you don't value your time, perhaps you're still a student rather than a professional, then by all means read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need.......2007-01-09

The Cookbook series has always been a reference for users that had at least some knowledge of the subject.
But even if you are just starting out, you can get started right away with writing commands. And since this book covers the major SQL formats, you won't be left out. I bought this book because an application uses Oracle and I was able to do what I needed to do. The great thing about the cookbook series is that you don't have to go through alot of text to get what you want. You find your problem and apply the solution.

If you're doing database application development in the Oracle environment, you're going to have to know PL/SQL, the company's extended query and update language. If you want your programs to exploit the special capabilities of Oracle software, you'll need to know the language well. That's where the third edition of Oracle PL/SQL Programming comes into play. It's an absolutely comprehensive reference (as well as a rather extensive tutorial) on PL/SQL, ideally suited to answering your questions about how to perform some programming tasks and reminding you of the characteristics of functions, triggers, and other elements of the database programmer's toolkit. The new edition covers calls to Java methods from within PL/SQL programs, autonomous transactions, object type inheritance, and the new Timestamp and XMLType data types. There's also more information about server internals--the way PL/SQL programs are run--than before, better enabling readers to optimize their code for fast and safe execution.

Steven Feuerstein takes care to explain, with prose and example code, the characteristics of PL/SQL elements. In explaining number conversions, for example, he explores Oracle's different ways of formatting numbers, then details the behavior of the to_number function under different conditions (with and without a specified format model, and with National Language Support information attached). It's a helpful approach that will have readers using the index to locate places in which Feuerstein mentions language elements of interest. --David Wall

Topics covered: How to use Oracle PL/SQL in all its manifestations through Oracle9i. Fundamentals of program structure (loops, cases, exceptions, etc.) and execution get attention, as do data types, transaction management, triggers, and the object-oriented aspects of the language. There's also coverage of calls to external Java and C programs.

Book Description

For the past ten years, O'Reilly's Oracle PL/SQL Programming has been the bestselling book on PL/SQL, Oracle's powerful procedural language. Packed with examples and helpful recommendations, the book has helped everyone--from novices to experienced developers, and from Oracle Forms developers to database administrators--make the most of PL/SQL.

The fourth edition is a comprehensive update, adding significant new content and extending coverage to include the very latest Oracle version, Oracle Database 10g Release 2. It describes such new features as the PL/SQL optimizing compiler, conditional compilation, compile-time warnings, regular expressions, set operators for nested tables, nonsequential collections in FORALL, the programmer-defined quoting mechanism, the ability to backtrace an exception to a line number, a variety of new built-in packages, and support for IEEE 754 compliant floating-point numbers.

The new edition adds brand-new chapters on security (including encryption, row-level security, fine-grained auditing, and application contexts), file, email, and web I/O (including the built-in packages DBMS_OUTPUT, UTL_FILE, UTL_MAIL, UTL_SMTP, and UTL_HTTP) and globalization and localization.

Co-authored by the world's foremost PL/SQL authority, Steven Feuerstein, this classic reference provides language syntax, best practices, and extensive code, ranging from simple examples to complete applications--making it a must-have on your road to PL/SQL mastery. A companion web site contains many more examples and additional technical content for enhanced learning.

5 out of 5 stars If you program in PL/SQL, then you need this book........2007-10-01

It is clear, concise, and as far as I can tell, correct. The writing is friendly, and the examples useful. I learned far more about PL/SQL from this book than from the Oracle documentation. I recently heard the author speak at a conference, and his good personality is reflected in the book.

5 out of 5 stars The most famous PL/SQL author.......2007-09-19

No doubt you must own this book if you start learning PL/SQL or if you want to improve your coding. Steven reveals many traps that may be in your code. It explains how to take advantage of multiple techniques like BULK COLLECT.

It may serve as a reference book too

5 out of 5 stars An excellent reference for PL/SQL -- it doesn't get better than this!.......2007-08-29

Steven's book is the best reference available for PL/SQL. No other book comes close. While he may cover Oracle user-defined types and object-relational technology, I regret that he only approaches the use of PL/SQL as a procedural language. Still, it's the best reference on the market for PL/SQL.

While I'm sure this book will be a great reference in the future, it assumed that I knew more than I did. I purchased this book because of the reviews of being good for the beginner. Rather disappointed with the reference to concepts to be reviewed in future chapters which kept me confused.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-08-24

This book can't be out of your office! It's an excelent, faster, complete reference that helps you in your every-day Oracle DBA work, It cover from the basic topics to RAC and high-availability configuration in only 708 pages. Obvious, It's a handbook reference and doesn't give you the complete solution for one problem, but if You had been working for 2 or 3 years as DBA, or if You are and OCA or OCP DBA, the book is a great reference for you.

1 out of 5 stars Forget it - RTFM.......2007-03-13

This book unfortunately does nothing to expand the body of knowledge beyond putting on paper what you can just as easily find in the standard documentation. I'm sorry I put my money down for this when I have the docs just a click away as I type.

I have tried a few times to use this as a reference, but each time it takes me about 3 pages to hit a deadend because of some question or situation that the book fails to address. In each case I have had to figuring it out for myself from the standard documentation/google etc.

The authors consistently fail to deliver the two things I look for in technical books:
(1) provide the insights on "why is it so?" - the explanation, mental models, frameworks that help readers move from just learning syntax to a deeper level of understanding. I want to read and learn from authors who are sufficiently skilled in their field with the powers of introspection and communication, who have put the time and effort to deeply consider a subject before turning their learnings into a book.

(2) supplement the existing body of knowledge with new knowledge or at least a new organisation of knowledge that facilitates learning or understanding.

I have had the same reaction to other titles in the Osborne Oracle Press series; I thought I'd give this a go but now sorry I did. In future there is no place for these books in my shopping cart!

5 out of 5 stars Reference Book!.......2007-01-04

If you are looking to learn Oracle, don't try to do it with this book alone. This book is great for reference, but to try and understand all that is Oracle requires a different book.

1 out of 5 stars Merely regurgitates Oracle's documentation........2006-12-07

This book merely regurgitates the freely available documentation from Oracle. However, this book is even worse since its space limitations means that the author is forced to be even more cryptic than the already difficult to understand product documentation. I could not find anything useful in this book - the book doesn't explain anything. Nothing at all. Aren't books like these supposed to simplify concepts for nonexperts or beginners? Forget about this book. Download the free documentation and use the money to print that out at Kinko's instead.

5 out of 5 stars It is an excellent DBA Handbook.......2005-11-20

The book is excellent in the sense that it went straight to the essential and important topics. I am surprised that they did cover a lot of topic in a few pages. The book does help if you have some experience with oracle and especially with 10g. If you are new to oracle I am pretty sure you pick up the wrong book and you will be shaken by the concepts in the book. Overall I recommend this book if you are already familiar with 10g.

5 out of 5 stars A good option to buy.......2007-09-02

RMAN is the present and the future of Oracle solution for backup.
It has a simple concept, but a great variety of commands, by this way, as a solution for all the complexity inside the RMAN solution, Oracle Database 10g RMAN Backup & Recovery come as a special "friend" to help us discovering all posibilities inside Oracle RMAN software.

5 out of 5 stars Makes backup & recovery ezeee.......2007-08-14

I had no idea about backup and recovery but after reading this book and trying out the examples, I can say with confidence I can recover a RMAN backed database. Written extremly well!!! One of the good technical boooks I have read....

5 out of 5 stars Worth it's weight in Gold!.......2007-06-30

Backup and Recovery is one of the most critical tasks that a DBA has to perform. Sadly, it is also one of the most misunderstood. RMAN should be the tool of choice for backup and recovery for Oracle databases. There is so much that can be done with RMAN.

What Robert and Matthew do is break it down piece by piece. There is a great intro and they build on that in subsequent chapters. If you want to link RMAN directly with your backup software (i.e. Veritas, EMC, Legato, etc..) then the authors show you how. I used the Veritas piece to link RMAN in and it worked flawlessly. They go over the latest features including block changing files (for faster incremental backups), merging level 1 and level 0 backups (for faster recoveries without the overhead of backing up the whole database), and even cover what the flash recovery area is and how to use it. There is so much great material packed in this book. Yeah, you can try and read Oracle's docs, but rather than just show you how to do it, the authors also teach you why to do it.

You can read this book chronologically or use it as a reference. The authors writing style make this book a great joy to read. They also include a lot of great examples in case you like to learn by seeing.

I would highly recommend this book if you are an Oracle DBA, whether you use RMAN or not. Afterall, RMAN is what you should be using :).

5 out of 5 stars Must have backup/recovery book.......2007-06-19

We had to install and configure Oracle10g 4 node RAC with ASM+FLASHBACK and implement backup/recovery procedures using RMAN and Veritas Netbackup. This book covers everything I need to know in depth.

I had bought his book on Oracle 9i RMAN Backup and Recovery...
And very much impressed with the technical details and examples given in the book... Same way, the book on 10g also excels in technical depth and details...

Book Description

This book will help you make the best use of Oracle technology. Emulating Tom's rational methodology, and demand for proof-by-example, will make you a far better technology thinker. Without question, this is one of the most importantly Oracle books you can possess.

— Ken Jacobs, Vice President of Product Strategy (Server Technologies), Oracle Corporation

This is a defining book on the Oracle database for any developer or DBA who works with Oracle-driven database applications. Tom has a simple philosophy: you can treat Oracle as a black box and just stick data into it or you can understand how it works and exploit it as a powerful computing environment. If you choose the latter, then you will find that there are few information management problems that you cannot solve quickly and elegantly.

Expert Oracle Database Architecture is the first of a three-book series that completely explores and defines the Oracle database. It covers all of the most important Oracle architecture features, including:

Each feature is taught in a proof-by-example manner, not only discussing what it is, but also how it works, how to implement software using it, and the common pitfalls associated with it.

This fully revised edition covers both the 9i and 10g versions. It also comes with a CD containing a searchable PDF of the 8i version of the book.

Tom has fully revised and expanded the architecture-related sections from Expert One-on-One Oracle (a searchable PDF of which is included on the CD accompanying this book), and added substantial new material. He focuses solely on 9i and 10g architecture in this book and refers to the CD for 8i-specific details. The number of changes will surprise you.

In summary, this book provides a one-stop resource containing deep wisdom on the design, development and administration of Oracle applications, written by one of the world's foremost Oracle experts, Thomas Kyte.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-09-19

This book is accurate and undoubtfully an excellent source to learn more about the Oracle Database.
Tom is an author full of humor with a versatile approach to performance. In his book he shows his approach to performance and put light on common practice like database independence and read-write consistency or like constraints enforced by triggers and autonomous transaction.
No doubt I learned a lot in this book!

5 out of 5 stars the right approach.......2007-07-29

I actually helps you understand, rather than just throwing information at you (as many books do)

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Oracle Architecture Reference Manual.......2007-06-11

If you work with Oracle this is a manual you need on your desk. Not just for DBA's but also for developers who will derive a good insight into how they should be developing their code.
Very technical but not to the point that brain freeze occurs.
Would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Oracle architecture explained simply.......2007-05-11

This is a very good book, and I will start with what it is and what it is not:

1. It is not a manual for an Oracle administrator. For example it does not contain anything about Oracle installation, troubleshooting, backing up or restoring a database.

2. It is not a SQL or PL/SQL reference, neither it is a introduction to databases. You have to know a significant deal about databases already for the book to make effect.

3. It is not an optimization guide. You will not find execution plans and configuration parameters here.

What is it then ?

It is an extensive coverage of Oracle internals - its files, memory structures, processes, undo/redo, tables, indexes and data types. Plus it explains Oracle's approach to transactions, locking and concurrency. On top of it, a couple of chapters offer you a view to partitioning and parallel execution being another very specific tools.

The book introduces you the Oracle ultimate goal of building highly concurrent database applications and then walks you through its internal details to show how to achieve it in the applications you build.

The book strikes the right balance so as not to go deep into unnecessary bit flags and names of undocumented variables, but clearly explain the architecture of the engine. The architecture (also mentioned in the title) is the "whiteboard" kind of architecture - the one you can sketch on a whiteboard with a couple of boxes and a few arrows, which is just right in this case.
The target audience for this book is anyone who develops applications with Oracle as the database back end. It is a book for professional Oracle developers who need to know how to get things done in the database. The practical nature of the book means that many sections should also be very interesting to the DBA.
The author is undoubtedly an expert, who has been working for Oracle for 15 years, with Oracle for even longer and has been consulting for God knows how many years. He also sticks to an honest, pragmatical and straightforward approach - there is not a single "enter Oracle, hold your breath" word.
The inspiration for the material contained in this book comes from my experiences developing Oracle software, and from working with fellow Oracle developers and helping them build reliable and robust applications based on the Oracle database. The book is basically a reflection of what I do every day and of the issues I see people encountering each and every day.
Like the other good books out there, it just gives you something to think about. Avoiding rules of thumb,
This is one of the main reasons why rules of thumb do not work on real-world systems: what works for you might not work for others in similar but different conditions.
it gives you the invaluable knowledge you could apply to your work. It is up to you to apply it afterwards.

Written very clearly, very easy to understand, nice trimmed examples, no screenshots. Highly recommended reading.

5 out of 5 stars Such a practially useful book!.......2007-05-07

My company was doing a 15 million dollar national project using Oracle. There were some very complicated and intense database algorithms. We hired a famous Oracle consultancy firm. The DBA who assisted me with all the design and performance benchmarking recommended this book to me. After I had a look, I realized that most of the techniques he used came from this book! Such a practically useful book!!

It does not talk about the theories and principles of Oracle, like all other thousands of "ordinary" books do. By reading those books you know "WHAT" Oracle is, but you don't easily relate it to your own business - when you face a certain problem, what you should do? What you should avoid? While this book addresses this domain.

I found reading each page and chapter virtually fun! I am not a computer nut who have no friends and family and work before his computer 18 hours a day. Yet I have fun and smiles every now and then when reading this Oracle book! Amazing!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-06-28

It's hard to find god information on RAC, many of the books simply aren't very good. This one is a must have if you are implementing a RAC enviroment, though of course metalink is crucial as well.

4 out of 5 stars Treats the core 20% like rest of the 80%.......2007-06-07

This is a good reference for Oracle RAC. The author makes a mistake, however, of treating the core 20% of RAC like rest of the 80%. For example, the book's details on Oracle RAC installation was about the same as its explanation of OCFS 1.0.

I think 3 things about ORACLE RAC are essential and perhaps the most important part of RAC knowledge. They are the architecture, the installation (not that simple), and the administration. Approximately 20% of the book is dedicated to the 3 core topics.

To his credit, the author does provide some fine examples and detailed knowledge on many esotoric aspects of RAC. For example, I have found his insights into DBMS and DGMRL packages related to RAC very helpful.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the price.......2007-05-17

The grammar is terrible, it's filled with bad analogies and information that should have been assumed (e.g., RAID - how long has this technology been around?). There's a couple good nuggets but overall, it's like bad reality TV, %5 content surrounded by 95% filler.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for 10g RAC.......2007-04-10

This book has proven to be an excellent guide for graduating my team on to 10g RAC. It has become a must-read for all our existing DBAs/new hires. The details that Murali lends to any topic allow us to understand the topic best. His narration is matched with his technicalese.
We are eagerly looking foward to his and Nitin's next book on ASM.

5 out of 5 stars Best RAC book.......2007-01-06

As compared to the 370 pages provided by Oracle as docu for RAC, this book with its nearly 700 pages and lots of info and examples is brilliant.
I have two years Oracle 10g RAC experience, but I have found in this book very valuable information about how RAC works, what is behind all components and all kind of "inside information" one could not find in Oracle documentation.
Except some typos (understandable, given the rush to print a good book about RAC) this book is clearly a BUY.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is THE PL/SQL BOOK.......2007-08-24

This is the best pl/sql book ever!! It's a complete reference for PL/SQL programation lenguaje, that covers from the basics topics like data types to advanced fueatures like inter-session comunication. Its includes hundreds of examples, online code and a complete reference for Oracle 10g packages and utilitys. This is the ultimate PL/SQL book.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but could be much better.......2007-07-07

This is book did help me learn PL/SQL; however, it did it in a very painful manner. The book could have easily been condensed to half the size and still convey the same information, only clearly and to the point. Many of the chapters have long coding examples that are followed by a line-by-obvious-line description about what is going on. It's tempting to skip the code explanations; however, there is the occasional hidden piece of useful information in them that forces you to sift through the junk. To make matters worse, much of the code is needlessly commented. You know what type of comments I'm talking about; there will be a comment that reads '-- declare a variable of type varchar' and then a declaration immediately afterward. Wow, thanks for doubling the code size and killing some more trees. Topping that off, in some of the examples, the comments don't actually match what the code is doing. Grrr.

I invested a lot of time in reading this book and after it was all said and done my feeling on it was, meh, I guess I learned something. The book is pretty good, it's just needlessly big, too big and time consuming for the value that it brings to your skill set.

3 out of 5 stars Poorly Written for a Book on Programming.......2007-06-25

The book is a large survey of the PL/SQL language and introduces many new things that have changed with 10g. But there is a major problem with the book, which runs throughout almost all Oracle Documentation.

The book is written more as a corporate training manual than that of a programming text book. As probably everyone who ever took a training class from their company knows, training is often done by people who not only are not educators, but may not actually understand or have even used the subject of the training. It is intentional that such people do not state the concepts abstractly - they only know concrete examples and maybe only the example in their pre-written material.

This book fits this description to a T. It does not specify the correct syntax except in examples. It does not specify the qualifications and conditions governing the language elements or the examples. As such, unless you are essentially copying an example almost verbatim, you have no real knowledge of whether your code will compile, let alone work as intended. As an example consider their discussion of SELECT statements. They speak about the Select clause, the INTO clause, etc. Nowhere do they state that the list of items in the INTO clause should separated by commas. Although most people could correctly guess that the comma is the separator, you need to find an example to show you that. The book is rampant with omissions like this. Two pages later, they use an OPEN - FOR construct in an example without introducing it. That it can be used dynamically, i.e. with the query in a character string constructed at run time, is not only not mentioned in this section, but is not even mentioned in the chapter on Dynamic SQL.

This should be looked upon as a book of (simple) examples. It should be no one's text or reference.

5 out of 5 stars Its more than my expectation.......2007-01-29

Book incorporated more detailed features and explanations with up to date technology examples (covering 9i and 10g in depth). I think I should not only use this book for my certification but also keep it with me as a reference guide too.

So far what I felt in most of the chapters, it really require previous background on the topics Or it takes little more time to cover some areas (new features).

3 out of 5 stars Not for a beginner.......2006-11-12

If you can download the entire 10g distribution, set it up, find
the author/book sample database, oracle text (?) and .....
then the book is great. One day later ... aaaaa.
I was learning sql on 10g
Express fine before this. These guys really need a
supplimental read.me. There wasn't much in their samples download,
which by the way, isn't with all the other oracle pubs,
you have to go to 'lastest' publications.
